Republicans Rally Behind Romney President Obama will host Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mexican President Felipe Calderón for the North American Leaders Summit on Monday at the White House.
Fh[l[dj_d] L_eb[dY[ Mayors, police chiefs, school officials and youth will report on their efforts to prevent youth violence Monday and Tuesday at the Summit on Preventing Youth Violence in Washington.
Fh[i_Z[dj_Wb Fh_cWh_[i With a total of 92 delegates up for grabs, D.C., Maryland and Wisconsin will hold Republican presidential primaries on Tuesday. Mitt Romney is favored to win all three contests.
Ceh[ ;dZehi[c[dji Mitt Romney picked up another endorsement Sunday from first-term Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, who said Romney is the right candidate to carry the GOP’s fight against President Obama. Johnson told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that Romney is “ready, willing and able to lead this nation,’ adding that Romney is the only candidate with a realistic chance of getting the necessary number of delegates to win the nomination. On Friday, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee, endorsed Romney. (AP)
C_bmWka[[ A fresh set of prominent Republicans rallied behind Mitt Romney as the odds-on nominee, further signs the general election is overtaking the primary season as President Obama’s administration launched a multipronged assault on the GOP frontrunner’s values and foreign policy credentials Sunday. A defiant Rick Santorum outlined plans to leave Wisconsin the day before the state’s contest Tuesday, an indication that the conservative favorite may be in retreat, his chances to stop Romney rapidly dwindling. “I think the chances are overwhelming that [Romney] will be our nominee,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “It seems to me we’re in the final phases of wrapping up this nomination.” Both Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden went after Romney on Sunday, underscoring the belief inside Obama’s Chicago re-election headquarters that Romney will — sooner than later — secure the right to face Obama this fall.

<eh IWdjehkc" ?jÊi Dej El[h O[j Rick Santorum said Sunday that his presidential campaign will continue even if he loses the Wisconsin primary Tuesday. The presidential candidate said walking away now would be like the Kansas basketball team giving up in the first half, when it trailed by more than 10 points Saturday night against Ohio State, before rallying to win and advance to the NCAA title game. “Look, this race isn’t even at halftime yet,” Santorum told “Fox News Sunday.” (AP)
“I think Gov. Romney’s a little out of touch,” Biden told CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday. “I can’t remember a presidential candidate in the recent past who seems not to understand, by what he says, what ordinary middle-class people are thinking about and are concerned about.” Clinton seized on Romney’s comment that Russia is America’s “No. 1 geopolitical foe,” calling the statement “dated” and suggesting there were more pressing matters of concern in global affairs. “I think it’s somewhat dated to be looking backwards instead of being realistic about where we agree, where we don’t agree,” Clinton told CNN Sunday. Racial Disparity Discovered in HPV Study: Blacks have trouble clearing the cervical cancer virus
?d\[Yj_edi
Ed j^[ :[Yb_d[ Cervical cancer has declined dramatically in the U.S. because of Pap tests, which are recommended every three years for women 21 to 65. Starting at age 30, women can also have an HPV test every five years; they’re not recommended before then because brief infections are so common, they would give too many false alarms. About 12,000 new cases and 4,200 deaths from cervical cancer occur each year in the U.S. (AP)
9^_YW]e Provocative new research might help explain why black women are so much more likely than whites to develop and die from cervical cancer: They seem to have more trouble clearing HPV, the virus that causes the disease. Doctors have long thought that less access to screening and follow-up health care were the reasons black women are 40 percent more likely to develop cervical cancer and twice as likely to die from it. The new study involving collegeage women suggests there might be a biological explanation for the racial disparity, too. If further study confirms this novel finding, it would make the HPV vaccine even more important for black women, said Worta McCaskill-Stevens, a prevention specialist at the National Cancer Institute.
Earn your bachelor’s degree here.
The study was presented Sunday at an American Association for Cancer Research conference. Certain strains of HPV, the human papillomavirus, cause cervical cancer, but brief infections are very common in young women. They usually go away and only pose a cancer risk when they last longterm. Is Her Beautiful Smile Good Genes, Or Does She Have A Secret? A smile so natural, only her dentist knows for sure. Empowered Eating her favorite foods, free to travel and live the life she wants. Not afraid to laugh or get close to the ones she loves. Many peers have missing or failing teeth, some even have dentures. How does she do it?
Consider this: MYTH: Tooth loss affects a relatively small group of people. FACT:
By the age of 50, the average Americans is missing 4 or more teeth.
MYTH: Tooth loss is almost always a result of poor oral hygiene.
Odds Against Us Virtually every adult will lose a tooth in their lifetime. For many, the suffering doesn’t stop there. As we age, factors ranging from poor oral health to heredity often bring about accelerated tooth loss – so much so that the average American will lose 4 or more teeth by the time they reach 50 years of age.
Traditional Remedies Historically, alternatives to failing teeth often involved a lifetime of glues, creams and adhesives and often were accompanied by discomfort and changes in appearance – meaning the options for treating missing or failing teeth could do little to alleviate the physical and emotional discomfort of tooth loss.
FACT:
Oral hygiene is important, but genetics and age are significant drivers of tooth loss.
MYTH: Dental problems caused by gum disease and tooth loss resolve themselves quickly. FACT:
Most dental problems do not
“self-resolve”
and usually become worse with time. MYTH: Dentures are the only option for those dealing with tooth loss. FACT:
Dental implants look and feel like your natural teeth and are a modern alternative to dentures.
Dental Implants Dental Implants are now considered a “Standard of Care” when replacing missing teeth and are often a better treatment option than conventional dental crowns, bridges, partial and full dentures. Dental Implants have been proven to be a more successful long term option when compared to these more traditional approaches. The appeal of dental implants is very simple: implants look and perform like natural teeth and fit precisely without the need for adhesives. They are permanent and cared for just like natural teeth and restore one’s natural smile.

‘The People’s Victory’
CWo '//& The junta calls general elections. Suu Kyi’s party wins a landslide victory, but the military refuses to hand over power.
Myanmar cheers as Suu Kyi’s party appears to sweep a democratic vote
EYj$ '//' Suu Kyi is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her peaceful struggle.
She struggled for a free Myanmar for a quarter-century, much of it spent locked away under house arrest. Now, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate whose nonviolent campaign for democracy at home transformed her into a global icon is on the verge of ascending to public office for the first time. Aung San Suu Kyi, 66, was elected to parliament Sunday in a historic victory buffeted by the jubilant cheers of supporters who hope her triumph will mark a major turning point in a nation emerging from a ruthless era of military rule. If confirmed, the election win will mark an astonishing reversal of fortune for a woman who became one of the world’s most prominent prisoners of conscience. When she was released in 2010, few could have imagined she would make the leap from democracy advocate to elected official in less than 17 months, with a potential presidential run in 2015. But Myanmar has changed. The junta ceded power last year, and though many of its leaders merely swapped military uniforms for civilian suits, they went on to stun even their staunchest critics by releasing political prisoners, signing cease-fires with rebels, relaxing press censorship and opening a dialogue with Suu Kyi. The top-down revolution has left Myanmar wondering how it happened — or at least, why now? One theory says the regime had long been desperate for legitimacy and a lifting of Western sanctions, and its leadership had recognized that their impoverished country, formerly known as Burma, had fall-

Supporters cheer in Yangon, Myanmar, celebrating the election successes seen Sunday for Aung San Suu Kyi’s pro-democracy opposition party.
H[ikbji F[dZ_d] ?d CoWdcWh Sunday’s vote was called to fill 45 vacant seats in Myanmar’s 664-member assembly. As results came in from the poll watchers of Suu Kyi’s party, spokesman and campaign manager Nyan Win projected the opposition would secure 40 of 45 parliamentary seats at stake. The opposition had contested 44 seats. Other opposition party members said they achieved a clean sweep. The results must be confirmed by the government’s electoral commission, however, which may not make an official declaration for days. (AP)

en far behind the rest of Asia. On the street in Yangon where Suu Kyi’s opposition National League for Democracy is based, none of that seemed to matter Sunday. The party’s foray into electoral politics was its first since 1990, when it won a landslide that was promptly annulled by the army. “It’s the people’s victory! We’ve taught them a lesson!” said a shopkeeper who goes by Thien, among a crowd of thousands that swelled as night fell. One official party message even told them not to gloat. Despite fears that Suu Kyi risks legitimizing a regime she has opposed for decades, her backers see the poll as a chance to take advantage of a government-orchestrated opening that could eventually spawn real democracy.
Suu Kyi herself said Friday that campaigning had been marred by so many irregularities that it could not be considered fair — allegations her party reiterated Sunday. Malgorzata Wasilewska, head of the EU observer team, called the vote “convincing enough” but stopped short of declaring it credible yet. Beginning Monday, riders of MARC’s Camden line are going to have to master new sets of train arrival and departure times. The Camden Line will have a new schedule going into effect, which will tweak some times:
8WYa ed JhWYa Since January, MARC’s on-time performance is 96 percent on the Penn Line, 97 percent on the Camden Line and 92 percent on the Brunswick Line. In 2011, the on-time figures were 93 percent for the Penn Line, 90 percent for the Camden Line and 84 percent for the Brunswick Line. In 2010, all three lines hovered in the range of 82 to 89 percent for on-time performance, according to MARC figures.

JhWdifehjWj_ed Maryland’s commuter trains are on schedule for about nine out of every 10 trips, a marked improvement from two years ago, when some trains ran late a third of the time and a string of high-profile delays culminated in a notorious breakdown that stranded 1,200 passengers in sweltering heat for two hours without air conditioning. Passengers say Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) trains

now stall less often, and when they do, conductors give more information and backup trains and buses arrive more quickly. MARC runs a total of 35,200 trips daily. Krystal Quille, a Penn Line passenger, said she grew so fed up with MARC’s delays a couple of years ago that she moved to D.C. to avoid them.
The new schedule will have the first train leaving Union Station at 6:32 a.m. and arriving at Baltimore at 7:46 a.m., while the last train heading that way leaves at 7:45 p.m. and arrives at 9 p.m. For riders heading in the opposite direction, the first train leaves Baltimore at 5 a.m. and arrives at Union Station at 6:08 a.m. The last train leaves Baltimore at 6:15 p.m. and gets to Union Station at 7:28 p.m.
Since moving back to Owings Mills, Md., three months ago, she said, she has been pleasantly surprised. “So far, it’s been the best service I’ve had,” said Quille. “Compared to 1 ½ years ago, it’s night and day,” said Rafi Guroian, chairman of MARC’s Riders Advisory Council. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Inside the red gateway arch flanked by stone lions, the parking lot just off Wilson Boulevard is jam-packed on a recent Saturday. The merchants and most of the patrons speak Vietnamese at Eden Center. The Falls Church shopping plaza is a community gathering spot for many of the nearly 80,000 Vietnamese Americans in the region. People drive for miles to visit the refuge of rice noodles, tropical fruits and Asian spices. But merchants and community leaders worry that outside their circle, their home away from home is increasingly viewed as a place for gambling and gang activity, a perception that some business leaders say hurts business and threatens the vibrant social hub. That impression was reinforced last year when police raided the plaza, said Liem D. Bui, a Springfield resident who visits Eden Center regularly. The Aug. 11 bust at 13 businesses resulted in 19 arrests on

Freshman Anthony Davis lived up to his billing as national player of the year with 18 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks in the win over Louisville. He was 7 of 8 from the field and added to his personal highlight reel with a onehanded dunk off an alley-oop pass and a flying leap off the court and over a row of media. One real positive was the way he called for the ball in the post in the second half as the Wildcats struggled from the perimeter. (AP)
Thomas Robinson took over the national semifinal in the second half, finishing with 19 points and eight rebounds. It was his presence inside that allowed the Jayhawks to finish with a 42-30 rebound advantage and stymied Ohio State’s frontcourt of Jared Sullinger and Deshaun Thomas, who were a combined 8 for 33 from the field. This matchup pits him against Anthony Davis, his competition for national player of the year. (AP)

This is the one-and-dones at Kentucky vs. juniors and seniors at Kansas; Anthony Davis vs. Thomas Robinson in a front-court battle of AllAmericans; a title-game coaching rematch between John Calipari and Bill Self; a high-stakes meeting

Kentucky (37-2), in search of its eighth national title but its first since 1998, has five, maybe six, players who will be playing in the NBA soon. Most are freshmen and sophomores. As he has all year and all tournament, Calipari has not so much defended as explained his coaching philosophy, which is to go after the very best players and not demand they graduate, but only that they play team basketball for whatever amount of time they spend in the Commonwealth. “I don’t like the rules,” Calipari said. “There’s only two solutions to it. Either I can recruit players who are not as good as the players I’m recruiting or I can try to convince guys who should leave to stay for me.” While the teams met in November, this is the matchup that has drawn the historic story lines. Basketball was invented by James Naismith, who later went on to establish the KU basketball program in 1898. Adolph Rupp grew up in Kansas and learned the game under Naismith and the next KU coach, Phog Allen, then moved to Kentucky. Over four decades, “the man in the brown suit” won 876 games and four NCAA championships. So many iconic names have followed at both places: Wilt Chamberlain, Larry Brown, Danny Manning at KU; Dan Issel, Wes Unseld, Rick Pitino at Kentucky. But now that Tomas Vokoun is out with a groin muscle strain and there is no indication whether he’ll be available again this season, the Capitals have come full circle from that day in July. With three games remaining in the regular season and the playoffs looming, Washington has no choice but to rely on Michal Neuvirth, 24, and Braden Holtby, 22, to shoulder the burden in goal. Throughout the season, coach Dale Hunter’s tendency has been to ride a hot goaltender in consecutive games. He typically makes a switch only after a loss. That strategy, combined with the Capitals’ overall inconsistencies, has resulted in a revolving door in net. During a four-game span in the past week, all three goaltenders started at least once. Holtby, who has 19 games of NHL experience, shut out Minnesota on March 25

8WYaijhec ?i 8WYa The highlight of the Caps’ win Saturday night was Nicklas Backstrom’s highly anticipated return to the Washington lineup after missing 40 games with a concussion. Backstrom finished with 19 minutes 40 seconds of ice time along with two shots on goal, skating as a member of the first line. He also won 12 of 18 faceoffs and finished with a minus-1 rating. Although he looked at ease in the first period, Backstrom admitted that he began to tire as the contest progressed. But all in all, it was a successful first game back for the center. (T WP)
to earn the nod in the biggest game of his young career against Buffalo on March 27. He was pulled after allowing three goals on 18 shots to the Sabres. On March 29
in Boston, Hunter went with Vokoun after the veteran said he was healthy after straining his groin. But Vokoun removed himself late in the first period after aggravat-
ing the groin injury, which put Neuvirth back in the spotlight. Since he entered that game, Neuvirth has stopped 79 of 83 shots and helped the Capitals claim a pair of shootout victories over Boston and Montreal. It’s likely he will receive another chance to start Monday in Tampa Bay. “Obviously, I feel bad for Vokey but it is what it is. I proved last year that I can be the man and I’m excited,” said Neuvirth, who started all nine playoff games for the Capitals last year but was relegated to a backup role with an inconsistent workload behind Vokoun for much of this season. For over four decades, Dr. John has served as ambassador of New Orleans music, introducing outsiders to Basin Street blues, second-line rhythms and Mardi Gras anthems. His two-dozenplus albums often resemble a musical museum, taking music born in dangerous places and making it safe for polite society.

But there was a time, back when Mac Rebennack dubbed himself “Dr. John, the Night Tripper,” when his music was anything but safe and clean. The Dr. John experience was, well, unsanitary. “Lewd and lascivious,” in the words of the St. Louis prosecutors who arrested his nude backup dancer and live-chicken-biting sideman. The few LPs he cut during this period ooze mysterious energies. Their voodoo funk is treasured by many fans who have no time for his post-’70s output. On his new album, “Locked Down” (out Tuesday), that old Dr. John resurfaces, courtesy of Black Keys guitarist Dan Auerbach, who produced the set.

‘Props to Pops’ Dr. John is taking over the Brooklyn Academy of Music this spring with “Insides Out,” a nine-night, guest-laden gig broken into three themed shows: one featuring the “Locked Down” band, one heavy on New Orleans R&B stars and one dedicated to Louis Armstrong. “I’m trying to give props to Pops,” he says of Armstrong. “I think we’re all supposed to give props to our elders.” J.D.

improvising. Only later would lyrics and melody be added. Auerbach “knew I had this little bag of poetry stuff that I write all the time,” Rebennack says, and he helped shape that material into a thematic sequence that follows the singer from outlaw posturing through to more spiritual and paternal concerns. The process was unusual but not uncomfortable. “I don’t have no one way to write songs,” Rebennack says. “I’ve writ songs with so many people, over a lot of years.” Rebennack’s syntax is richly off-kilter. His patois is littered with nonexistent words, effortless bits of color that occasionally have a purpose beyond decoration. Appearing as himself on HBO’s “Treme,” he alluded to the hazards of recording traditional Mardi Gras Indian chants; on “Locked Down’s” “Eleggua,” he couldn’t bring himself to use the exact language of ceremonies he’s known since his youth. “I did some mispronounciations of stuff here and there,” he says, tweaking the word “mispronunciation” itself. Rebennack, a longtime voodoo practitioner, says he doesn’t “think it would be correct” to put the real thing in a song. “But I did more of the real maneuvers than I ever have in the past.” JOHN DEFORE (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Besides serving as a ballot box and a bridge between viewers, the “Voice” app will lead users to new content, including performance videos and blogs, NBC says. (AP)

Wild at Heart Ex-Sleater-Kinney guitarist Carrie Brownstein is keeping the dream of the ’90s alive on “Portlandia.” But Wild Flag — her project with S-K drummer Janet Weiss, D.C. guitar legend Mary Timony and Rebecca Cole from the Minders — is far from being a riotgrrrl rehash. Wild Flag is one of the best live bands out there these days — heavy, polished, fun and with plenty of Who-level high kicks. 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW; Mon., 7 p.m., sold out; 202-265-0930, 930.com. Grub for Good It’s always easier to open your wallet when good food is involved. Tonight at the National Building Museum, Taste of the Nation DC aims to raise awareness of childhood hunger. Culinarily-minded committee members include Scott Drewno of The Source, Nicholas Stefanelli of Bibiana, and “Top Chef” alumni Mike Isabella and Bryan Voltaggio. National Building Museum, 401 F St. NW; Mon., 7 p.m., $95-$150, 202-272-2448; Strength.org. (Judiciary Square)
Woman of Words Acclaimed author Joyce Carol Oates has written about 50 bazillion words over her career, and shows no signs of slowing down. She appears tonight at Politics and Prose to read from her latest book, “Mudwoman,” about the president of an Ivy League university who finds an abandoned girl who forces her to face her own past. Politics and Prose, 5015 Connecticut Ave. NW; Mon., 7 p.m.; free; 202-364-1919, Politics-prose. com. (Van Ness)

beeaekj kd_edi FIRST DATE: Officially, Busboys & Poets and a walk around U Street. HOW SHE PROPOSED: At their spring concert, Suz grabbed the mic and called Lauren to the front, where she knelt and proposed. STUPIDEST FIGHT: When Suz thought Lauren moved her shoes, “which I always do since I’m a neat freak,” Lauren says. “I swore I hadn’t moved them but she didn’t believe me. They were right where she left them ... she had just put something on top of them!” THEIR SONG: Joshua Radin’s “Today.” They saw the song live at the 9:30 Club. “At the end of the song, we were both crying because the words described what we were feeling perfectly,” says Lauren.
IkpWdd[ 9ecXi" BWkh[d C[pp_de Suz, 28, left, is a George Washington University master patrol officer. Lauren, 29, is a teacher. They live in D.C. THE MAIN EVENT: They’re getting married at the Jefferson Memorial on April 7, with a reception on a boat on the Potomac and an afterparty at a Georgetown club. HOW THEY MET: At band camp for D.C.’s Different Drummers, a GLBT symphonic/marching band. Friends asked who in the group was single. Suz says: “We both raised our hands. We went on a long walk under the stars and immediately connected.”
Eliza, 27, works for the EPA. Arthur, 28, is a business development associate. They live in Alexandria. THE MAIN EVENT: April 21 at the restaurant at Mount Vernon. On the formality scale, Eliza jokes, “it’s 8.7 kilobrunches.” HOW THEY MET: “I joined the same
club for huge nerds that he was in” during college, Eliza says. Arthur: “She got elected president against my wishes since I thought she was a pushy interloper.” FIRST IMPRESSIONS: “Most of us had a crush on her while at the same time being kind of scared of her.” FIRST DATE: A sci-fi convention. “It wasn’t officially a date, but when you spend a whole convention together and then cuddle for an hour at the train station afterwards, it’s hard to

call it anything else,” Arthur says. HOW HE PROPOSED: With a scavenger hunt at the Music and Gaming Festival, with her friends and convention staff as accomplices. “I had to beat the final boss of ‘Sonic 3 and Knuckles’ to trigger a custom video. At the end, I turned around and there he was.” OUR SONG: “Makin’ Out” by Mark Owen. “I like that song, and Arthur loves it, and I’d’ve never learned about it without him.”

JhWl_i >_j[" 9Wj^[h_d[ Jheeij Travis, 30, works for Booz Allen. Catherine, 23, is a nursing student. They’ll live in D.C. after the wedding. THE MAIN EVENT: A June 2 affair at a Catholic church in Georgetown. All the flowers will come from Catherine’s mother’s garden. HOW THEY MET: On the Hill, where Travis was a staffer and Catherine was interning. FIRST DATE: “On the last day of Catherine’s internship, I invited her to a party at my house, but I hadn’t actually planned a party. After she agreed to come, I called all my friends and forced them to come.” HOW HE PROPOSED: After a weekend in a rented cabin outside Charlottesville, Va. WHEN SHE KNEW: The first date. “It’s hard to resist a nice guy with Southern charm.” FAMILY TRADITIONS: She’ll wear her mom’s cameo ring, a gift from her aunt on Mom’s wedding day.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may have to sacrifice a pet project or two today in favor of one that is more important to a greater number of people. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Someone is waiting for you to come through, and you are nearing the finish line ahead of schedule. Today you may have cause to celebrate. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You can illuminate certain key issues by exploring them in new and creative ways. You don’t have to embrace traditional methods. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You may have to step aside temporarily today as someone else steps forward and tries to put your methods into practice himself.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Now is not the time to be telling others what to do. Rather, you can learn a great deal by watching them do things their own way. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may be facing one or two of your own demons before the day is out. What someone says to you early in the morning spawns dark thoughts. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You don’t want things to devolve into a confusing free-for-all today; keep the reins in your hand, and exert a steady influence. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’ll seem to know just what is required by a certain tricky situation today, and others will come to you requesting that you get involved.
