Smithsonian Secretary David J. Skorton has announced initiatives to celebrate women’s history.

Noting that the achievements of women have been “underrated, undervalued and sometimes completely unrecognized,” Skorton pledged that the Smithsonian would hire curators and create programs to elevate the profile of women and their contributions. Congress included $2 million in its spending plan to support the program, which Skorton says will accomplish the goals of a

museum. Advocates, however, view it as a crucial first step in establishing a new facility. “The Smithsonian’s American Women’s History Initiative is integral in laying the groundwork for a future Smithsonian museum dedicated to American women’s history,” Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, D-N.Y., said. She is the author of the House bill that would establish the museum. Maloney expressed frustration at the Smithsonian’s lack of support for the project. “We are half of America. Don’t we deserve a museum?” Maloney asked, adding that her bill to establish the museum “has more than 250 bipartisan co-sponsors.” She said Smithsonian officials “should put in writing their support for a women’s museum so that we can proceed.” The Smithsonian plans to announce details about the women’s initiative — including specific exhibitions and a plan to hire curators across institutions to focus on women’s history — by the end of the year. MUSEUMS A new Washington museum focused on women’s history has many passionate fans — but Smithsonian Secretary David J. Skorton isn’t one of them. The head of the world’s largest museum complex announced this month that the Smithsonian Institution will launch a Women’s History Initiative to highlight women’s achievements. But Skorton doesn’t support a stand-alone museum. “We’re not in a position to initiate any new museums in the near future,” he said. Skorton announced the new initiative at the National Museum of American History, where House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., formally donated several artifacts to the collection, including the suit she wore at her historic swearing-in as the first female speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

increasing ridership. He commissioned a glossy video, part of a $400,000 advertising campaign, to extol the ways in which Metro was getting “back to good.” The campaign backfired, with many riders and elected officials criticizing the agency for spending money to improve its public image instead of focusing on improving service. The Metro board has pushed the transit agency to pursue the idea of selling station naming rights — allowing companies or institutions to attach their brand to the official name of a Metro station, for a price. And yet, when Metro sought out potential station sponsors, there were no serious offers. And that’s how an innocuous thing like a gift shop with trainthemed souvenirs became a lightning rod. Of course, there are fans. On opening day, there was a line out the shop door. But the endeavor still rubbed some people the wrong way, a symbolic victory lap for a system that has not yet completed its turnaround. Nick Zaiac, a fellow in commercial freedom at the American Institute for Economic Research, said he wasn’t surprised to see

Riders: Forget the marketing ploys and just focus on fixing the system TRANSPORTATION When Metro opened its retail store at Metro Center last month, transit agency officials were met with a reaction they didn’t expect: disdain, criticism and swift condemnation. The message from customers: Quit with the self-congratulatory T-shirts. Just focus on getting the trains to run on time. The backlash was a small example of a larger problem the transit agency is only beginning to grapple with after years of lapses in reliability and safety. Metro has a branding problem. “Twitter’s interesting,” Metro board chairman Jack Evans said of the ridicule. “They’re always pretty negative on everything we do. I think this is a very positive thing. Metro has, for so long, not done things to promote itself.” Metro is looking for opportunities like the retail shop, station renaming and corporate sponsorships as ways to increase revenue. But it is finding that the mixed feelings associated with the Metro brand have diminished those opportunities. Self-promotion has become a big part of General Manager Paul Wiedefeld’s plan for reviving the system’s popularity and

Two Democratic gubernatorial candidates are clashing over the implications of the verb “to prance.” State Sen. Richard S. Madaleno Jr. has accused entrepreneur Alec Ross of engaging in dog-whistle politics by implying he “prances around Annapolis talking” instead of getting things done. so much ire raised by a gift shop. “When people see any effort that is not put toward running more trains, they’re not looking at it from the perspective of, ‘We can do that, and we can do this, too,’ ” Zaiac said. Still, Zaiac said he’s a fan of Metro’s efforts to experiment with ways to increase revenue. “It’s a low-cost way of adding to the quality of the Metro experience,” Zaiac said. He wants to see Metro pursue other ideas for generating revenue, such as repurposing Metro parking lots on weekends to serve as a venue for open-air markets and community events, or to more aggressively pursue outside retailers interested in setting up shop inside stations. “A little retail on station mezzanines could go a long way,” Zaiac said. “There are a lot of

underused nooks and crannies.” Zaiac said the agency has an uphill battle to counter the negative images that come to mind when people think of Metro — singletracking and extended delays, fires, derailments and deaths. “But just as much as the negative stuff, there is a positive brand, too,” Zaiac said. Evans dismisses the naysayers. Metro was once considered cutting-edge and cool. It can be those things again, he said. “As Metro gets better and people come back to using it, there is and will be a greater market for Metro memorabilia,” Evans said. “And who knows? Maybe it’ll catch on someday. You’ll have a big M on your shirt, it will be the fashion worldwide, and people will be trying to get ahold of it and we’ll make a fortune.” MARTINE POWERS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

local Students demand that president resigns after financial aid scandal THE DISTRICT Student protesters at Howard University met for several hours with representatives from the school’s board of trustees Saturday for what both sides described as productive negotiations. But the student-led takeover of the university’s administration building continued into Sunday with no immediate end in sight. “There has been a great deal of respect going on both sides, and it appears that the antagonistic force that was there before is

starting to dwindle and wither away,” Juan Demetrixx, one of the student leaders, said at a Saturday news conference across from the administration building in Northwest. “So we’re hoping that in the next coming days we are able to get these demands met.” Additional negotiations were slated for Sunday evening, after Express’ deadline. More than 300 Howard students have occupied the building since Thursday, sleeping on the floor on donated pillows and mats. Protesters have issued nine demands to the university, including that Howard President Wayne A.I. Frederick resign. “We’re not budging on that at

Israel declines inquiry into Gaza border deaths U.N., European Union call for investigation after 15 people killed ISRAEL Israel’s defense minister on Sunday rejected international calls for an investigation into deadly violence along Gaza’s border with Israel, saying troops acted appropriately and fired only at Palestinian protesters who posed a threat. Fifteen Palestinians were killed and over 700 wounded in Friday’s violence near the Israeli border, according to Palestinian health officials. Both the U.N. secretary-general and the European Union’s foreign policy chief have urged an investigation. In an interview, Defense

Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Israel would not cooperate with a U.N. inquiry if there were one. Friday’s mass marches were largely led by Gaza’s ruling Hamas, an Islamic militant group sworn to Israel’s destruction, and touted as the launch of a six-weeklong protest campaign against a stifling decade-old blockade of the territory. In Friday’s confrontations, large crowds gathered near the fence, with smaller groups of protesters rushing forward, throwing stones and burning tires. Israeli troops responded with live fire and rubber-coated steel pellets, while drones dropped tear gas from above. Soldiers with rifles were perched on high earthen embankments. Protests have continued since Friday but at a far smaller scale.

In one video that spread on social media, a young man was fatally shot from behind while running away from the border area carrying a tire. The Israeli military accused Hamas of releasing videos that were either incomplete, edited or “completely fabricated.” In the case of the man with the tire, the army said the video told only part of the story, and said he was a Hamas militant who had been involved in violence just moments before he was shot. It gave no evidence to support the claims. Inside Israel, most of the country has lined up solidly behind the army. Still, on Sunday, dozens of Israelis demonstrated in Tel Aviv against the violence, criticizing Israel for its response.

The new Giacomo Casanova Museum and Experience, opening today in Venice, Italy, hopes to educate visitors about the 18th-century adventurer, bon vivant, writer and scholar — beyond just his notorious womanizing. Using virtual reality technology, visitors can read, hear and watch digital presentations on Casanova’s youth and subsequent serial seductions. The museum also features exhibits on his European travels, arrests and escapes, personality, scholarly achievements and portrayals in film over the years. “We want this character, this person, to be known in his entirety,” said museum director Andrea Cosentino. SACRAMENTO, CALIF. A 61-year-old woman was struck by a police vehicle Saturday as it peeled away from protesters demonstrating against the police killing of Stephon Clark, in what was described by the victim and protesters as a hit-and-run. Wanda Cleveland, a local activist, was hit in her right leg and taken to a hospital, where she was treated for injuries to her arm and head and released. Marchers had taken to the street Saturday, as protests have continued for days in the wake of the killing of Clark, 22, an unarmed black man shot by police March 18 in Sacramento, Calif. Demonstrations have been tense since Thursday, when an autopsy report concluded that Clark was struck eight times, mostly in the back. The incident was recorded on police body cameras. In a video published by ABC10, protesters can be seen surrounding a Sacramento County sheriff police cruiser. Another cruiser pulls up behind it. “Back away from my vehicle,” a deputy says four times. After a few moments, the first

BUSINESS A data breach at department store chains Saks Fifth Avenue, Saks Off Fifth and Lord & Taylor has compromised the personal information of customers who shopped at the stores, the chains’ parent company, Canada-based Hudson’s Bay Co., announced Sunday. The disclosure came after New York-based security firm Gemini Advisory LLC revealed on Sunday that a hacking group known as JokerStash or Fin7 began trying to sell a stash of up to 5 million stolen credit and debit cards on dark websites last week. The security firm confirmed with several banks that many of the compromised records came from Saks and Lord & Taylor customers. There is evidence that the breach began about a year ago, said Dmitry Chorine, Gemini Advisory’s co-founder and chief technology officer. He said the prolific hacking group has previously targeted major hotel and restaurant chains. Chorine said the hackers’ method is to send cleverly crafted phishing emails to company employees, especially managers, supervisors and other key decision-makers. Once an employee clicks on an attachment, which is often made to look like an invoice, the system gets infected. “For an entire year, criminals were able to sit on the network of Lord & Taylor and Saks and steal data,” he said. ‘No more DACA deal’ In anti-immigration rant, Trump says U.S.-Mexico border is ‘getting more dangerous’

Shulkin insists he was fired, never resigned

P H I L I P R U C K E R A N D D AV I D W E I G E L

POLITICS Former Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin is making it clear he was fired, amid conflicting claims from the White House. White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters on Sunday told The Associated Press that Shulkin had “resigned” from his job when President Trump abruptly announced via Twitter last Wednesday that he was nominating White House doctor Ronny Jackson to replace him. But in TV interviews, Shulkin said he had not submitted a resignation letter, or planned to, and was only told of Trump’s decision shortly before the Twitter announcement. The semantics could be relevant to Trump’s ability to name an acting VA secretary to temporarily fill Shulkin’s place. Last week, Trump named Defense Department official Robert Wilkie to the acting position, bypassing Shulkin’s deputy secretary, Tom Bowman. Bowman has come under criticism for being too moderate to push Trump’s agenda. Under federal law, a president has wide authority to temporarily fill a federal agency job if someone “dies, resigns, or is otherwise unable to perform the functions and duties of the office.” There is no mention of a president having that authority if the person is fired. Still, it’s unclear if courts would seek to draw a legal distinction between a firing and a forced resignation.

POLITICS President Trump spent his Easter morning in Florida on an anti-immigrant tirade, declaring Sunday that there would be no deal to legalize the status of undocumented immigrants known as “Dreamers,” and threatening to exit the North American Free Trade Agreement unless Mexico increases border security. Trump thrust the future of millions of immigrants who were brought illegally to the United States as children into peril by promising “NO MORE DACA DEAL,” and he directed congressional Republicans to pass tough anti-immigration legislation. An hour after he wished Americans a “HAPPY EASTER,” and minutes before he attended a church service, Trump fired off three tweets in which he vented, sometimes in all caps, about immigration laws he derided as “ridiculous” and “dumb” and about border enforcement he deemed dangerously lax. In his first of three immigration-related tweets, Trump wrote, “Border Patrol Agents are not allowed to properly do their job at the Border because of ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like Catch & Release. Getting more dangerous. ‘Caravans’ coming. Republicans must go to Nuclear Option to pass tough laws NOW. NO MORE DACA DEAL!” The DACA program was begun during the Obama administration to provide temporary protection to Dreamers. Trump canceled DACA in the fall but said he would like to reach a deal with Congress to protect the Dreamers from deportation in exchange for funding to build his long-promised wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

President Trump fired off several tweets about immigrants Sunday while at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Fla.

Trump, however, went on to reject immigration proposals from congressional Democrats. Trump’s Sunday tweets may have been in response to commentary on Fox News Channel, which aired a segment earlier in the morning with the headline: “CARAVAN OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS HEADED TO U.S.” In a second tweet, Trump lashed out at Mexico and threatened to “stop” NAFTA, saying Mexican authorities are not doing enough to secure the border with the United States. Trump wrote: “Mexico is doing very little, if not NOTHING, at stopping people from flowing into Mexico through their Southern Border, and then into the U.S. They laugh at our dumb immigration laws. They must stop the big drug and people flows, or I will stop their cash cow, NAFTA. NEED WALL!” In a third tweet, the president wrote, “These big flows of people are all trying to take advantage of

NAFTA tension President Trump’s tweets come amid tense negotiations over NAFTA between his administration and that of Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. A call between the two men in February became testy after Trump refused to publicly affirm Pena Nieto’s position that Mexico will not pay for the wall’s construction, leading the Mexican leader to cancel a planned visit to Washington. (TWP)

DACA. They want in on the act!” Trump appeared to be confused about the rules of the DACA program. To qualify, immigrants must have lived in the United States since 2007, have arrived in the country before age 16 and have been younger than 31 on June 15, 2012. No one arriving in the country after that date is eligible. Trump sent his tweets while on vacation in Palm Beach,

Fla., where he was staying at his private Mar-a-Lago club. White House chief of staff John Kelly did not travel with him, but senior policy adviser Stephen Miller, a proponent of hard-line immigration policies, was spending the Easter weekend with Trump. The president was also spotted spending time with Fox host Sean Hannity. Trump’s tweets baffled some Democrats, who had seen the president distinguish between DACA recipients and other immigrants who are in the country illegally. Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., said on Twitter that Trump had once again revealed a racial animus behind his immigration policy. “The mask of deceptions and lies with which Trump has tried to gaslight the country for months just fell away: ‘no more DACA deal,’ ” Beyer tweeted. “His true position was always anti-immigrant.”

usy professionals who want to earn a graduate degree or EertiƂEate to advance in their careers have a variety of options to fulƂll their dreams and professional goals. Choices include part-time and full-time enrollment as well as classes offered on weekends, weeknights, online, with short residencies and a combination of approaches.

Students can earn a new degree on an accelerated plan in a year or 15 months or stretch out the time to several years if needed to Ƃ t into their schedules, said Dr. John Straub, Executive Director of the University of Maryland’s Professional Master’s Degree program. For example, “Most of the University of Maryland’s

professional master’s degree programs are offered on accelerated schedules that permit students to complete full 10-course programs in 15 months,” Dr. Straub said. “Mostly this is accomplished by eliminating the long winter and summer breaks. The courses operate on an accelerated 12-week schedule, which means about 15 percent

More broadly: as interest grows in world affairs, there is a growing emphasis on global and international studies across a number of Ƃelds including education. Some students choose interdisciplinary degrees to gain experience and knowledge across several Ƃelds. “Challenging problems in medicine, public safety and resource management often

Ortega, president of the Council of Graduate Schools. “It is critical for master’s and doctoral students to have opportunities to tackle problems using new interdisciplinary approaches.” On the other hand, there are a growing number of niche and specialized degrees aimed at a more narrow group of professionals. In some cases, students opt to seek a graduate certiƂcate instead of another degree. r

Demand for IT Experts Continues to Grow

s big data gets bigger, and as organizations across all sectors focus on c[bersecurit[, tJe Ƃeld of information technology continues to grow. “Every sector needs more information technology management,” said Dr. Stefano Grazioli, director of the University of Virginia’s Master of Science degree in the Management of Information Technology. “Delivering business value through information technology: that’s what motivates our program. There is a fair amount of money being wasted on ineffective IT investment. We foster competencies and skills that allow our managers to make better use of IT assets. Having competent IT managers will foster more productive, more innovative organizations.” The University of Virginia’s M.S. in MIT program covers four broad topic areas:

innovation and big data analytics, digital platforms and security, product management, and business strategy, Dr. Grazioli said. “We foster an ability to cut through the hype and marketing material and learn

“We provide them with the ability to fully speak the language of IT, to clearly be able to ask for the resources they need, to specify the systems they want and need to be able to serve their customers better. about the true business possibilities from technology innovation,” he said. “Our students lead efforts to improve their companies. Many of our candidates have a strong business background but not necessarily a technical

background; others have a strong technology background. They all learn from each other’s practical experiences.” Classes include people from dozens of organizations, including Bank of America, Capital One, Navy Federal

Credit Union, Booz Allen Hamilton, Microsoft, Deloitte, the State Department, the National Security Council, the Department of Justice, the Army Reserves and the Joint Warfare Analysis Center, he said. One key step is learning the language of IT. When students enter the program they often, “don’t know the IT language spoken in meetings,” he said. “They don’t know the IT jargon. They don’t fully understand the answers to their questions. We provide them with the ability to fully speak the language of IT, to clearly be able to ask for the resources they need, to specify the systems they want and need to be able to serve their customers better. Being able to speak the language also builds conƂdence.” The University of Virginia offers the degree in both Charlottesville and Tyson’s Corner. Students at the Northern Virginia campus meet every other Saturday. Students at the Charlottesville campus meet once a month for two days, he said. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 12 percent increase in long-term demand for IT managers with 400,000 jobs available in the United States, Dr. Grazioli said. In Northern Virginia the average annual pay is around 1 ,000, he said. r RETURN ON INVESTMENT: “Our students aspire to reach positions of higher responsibilities,” he said. “Ideally, they are shooting for C-level positions. We have dozens of C-level executives that have attended our program.” Many students recoup the cost of their degree in two to four years,” Dr. Grazioli said. “In a few exceptional cases, students were able to pay for their school costs before they even completed the program.”

MBA Continues As Gold Standard for Good Leadership and Advancement

A

n MBA continues to offer the best path for people working in business to broaden and deepen their knowledge, advance in their careers and make lasting key contacts. “An MBA remains the gold standard for good leadership, for managing projects, for managing various divisions of organizations,” said Dr. Parviz Ghandforoush, Professor and Associate Dean of the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech. “The MBA is a broad degree, and that’s what companies are looking for,” said Dr. Jeanne Simmons, associate dean of Marquette’s Graduate School of Management. “Companies want people that can see through silos and understand how individual departments need to work together to create value and proƂt.” MBA students not only learn how to solve organizational problems but also how to identify scenarios that make

combination in any Ƃeld other than an MBA. Graduates are going to be much more wellrounded than someone who has only an engineering or computer science background. That’s why corporations prefer MBAs because they understand business and how to manage.” Students typically work on real-world case studies, including the siting of Amazon’s new headquarters, Dr. Ghandforoush said. “The Washington, D.C. area has become a very strong technology base for the whole country,” he said. “Anything we do in the IT area, anything we do in business intelligence and global intelligence will have strong value in our community.” Many MBA schools earn reputations for certain specialties within their programs. Virginia Tech’s program is well-known for information technology, business analytics, leadership,

an organization a challenging environment, Dr. Ghandforoush said. With that analysis, professionals can take action to create a healthy organization. “Units within companies, and divisions within organizations, are fairly challenging to lead, organize and manage,” he said. “You need to have foundational knowledge of business management, marketing, accounting and leadership. You can’t get that

global business and Ƃnance, Dr. Ghandforoush said. The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business focuses on functional areas in Ƃnance, marketing, consulting and supply chain/ operations, said Dr. Michael Faulkender, Associate Dean of Masters Programs and Professor of Finance. “We also look at data-driven decision making,” Dr. Faulkender said. “We’re looking at being able to

prospective student will Ƃt and beneƂt best, said Shelbi N. Brookshire, MBA, Senior Director, EMBA Recruiting and Alumni Engagement. One incoming student, “Amy,” was considering completing a parttime MBA. Amy’s total work experience was close to those in the part-time program, but

harness this increasing amount of information available to build new business models, build new products and better serve customers with existing products. People who understand how to work with all this data and build better organizations are going to be better business people.” Marquette University offers a specialization in international business built into its Executive MBA program, Dr. Simmons said. Professionals early in their career may specialize in an area such as marketing or Ƃnance within the program while midcareer students seeking to move to the C suite often choose an Executive MBA (EMBA) for broader knowledge and skill sets. “They’ve shown some career progression but may not yet be in a management role,” Dr. Faulkender said. “They’re seeking to get skill sets that allow them to go into

a management role within a functional area. Some are career transitioners who have an engineering or technology background but haven’t worked on the business side. Now they want to get into understanding strategy and move into supervisory roles.” Professionals already in supervisory roles often seek an EMBA to move into positions as directors, vice presidents or within the C suite, Dr. Faulkender said. “They’re ready to be promoted or they recently became a director and they are looking to continue to rise in the organization,” he said. “The motivation to earn an executive MBA often arises from an individual wanting to move up the corporate ladder,” Dr. Ghandforoush said. “When you look up and see the CIO, the CFO, the CEO – they all have MBAs. You know you’re talented but you need that ammunition. The executive

MBA provides the ammunition.” The cohort and team-based EMBA programs closely replicate the work environment where professionals don’t have a choice of members of their team, Dr. Simmons said. “In your career, you are given a task and a team and you need to work to solve it,” she said. “That’s what we do in the EMBA program for 17 months.” Within these cohort-based programs, students bond and make lasting connections. “As an example of how our students bond: we allow prospects to sit in a class or two to test-drive the program,” Dr. Simmons said. “We no longer allow them to sit in on the ethics class because we found that our students tended to be a bit more quiet when others were in the class.” Part of the admissions process at the University of Maryland School of Business is determining where a

her management experience aligned her more closely with those in the EMBA program. She switched to the EMBA program and will graduate in July. Virginia Tech offers three part-time programs for working professionals to earn an MBA: a self-paced evening program offered in Falls Church, typically completed in three to threeand-a-half years, a professional hybrid online and in-class program with one weekend a month in class alternating between Richmond and Roanoke, for two years, and an EMBA program offered cohort

style in Arlington every other weekend for 18 months. The University of Maryland offers an online MBA, a parttime MBA that meets two nights a week and takes 24-33 months, a traditional full-time MBA that takes two years, and an EMBA that meets every other Friday and Saturday for 19 months, Dr. Faulkender said. r RETURN ON INVESTMENT: While she was still a year away from completing the program, Amy from the University of Maryland received three jobs offers, chose one, and secured a 32 percent salary increase, Brookshire said. Another EMBA graduate was promoted and during a recent merger, given a large team to navigate the transition and retain customers, she said. Marquette students report getting promotions and increased job responsibilities while still completing the program, Dr. Simmons said. Students from Virginia Tech’s MBA program have reported raises of 30 percent to 50 percent, sometimes accompanied by generous bonuses, Dr. Ghandforoush said. “I’m not aware of any other field where an individual will embark on pursuing a master’s degree, finish it and then immediately be given an increase in salary of 50 percent,” Dr. Ghandforoush said.

Journalists Gain International Expertise and Move Up

I Economist/Professor is Passionate About Alleviating Poverty Dr. Misty Heggeness, Chief of the Longitudinal Research, Evaluation and Outreach Branch at the U.S. Census Bureau Dr. Misty Heggeness has always been passionate about poverty alleviation, first as a social worker and now as an economist in the federal government. “Economists provide policy makers with data-driven research so they can make informed decisions about which programs and policies to support,” Heggeness said. Dr. Heggeness, Chief of the Longitudinal Research, Evaluation, and Outreach Branch at the U.S. Census Bureau, teaches a masters-level course called Program Analysis and Evaluation in the University of Maryland Department of Economics. Students learn about the importance of different evaluation tools, such as randomized trials, available to them as economists. For example, selecting program participants randomly for a training program enables evaluators to accurately determine the program impact by comparing participants to similar others who were not selected. Dr. Heggeness also is passionate about the potential from big data. “We’re experiencing a revolution in how economists need to think about data,” she said. “Today more than ever, we need computer science and big data skills to learn efficient ways to use all this data to inform public policy.”

ncreasingly, journalists are seeking a broader understanding of global issues to become better reporters, to move beyond domestic reporting or to leverage their already-honed communications skills into excellent jobs outside of journalism. A master’s degree in international relations can help pave the way. “The country and the world are going through a very interesting time right now,” said Martina Leinz, director of executive education recruitment and outreach at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). “It is critical that we have well-informed journalists that can probe deeper and push back against fabricated news. The intersection of the role of journalism and international affairs has arguably never been more vital.” In addition to the traditional two-year Master of Arts program, Johns Hopkins SAIS offers a Master of Arts in Global Policy intended for working professionals that is taught every other Friday and Saturday over 16 months. The program includes four residencies: three domestic and one international in which teams from each cohort are paired with clients

to complete a project for the client organization. Students have a variety of ways to see return on their investment. For some professionals, the degree is a way to pivot into another career. “We have people who have not worked in the journalism Ƃeld but would like to get into it,” Leinz

said. “They Ƃnd success at organizations such as Reuters and The Washington Post— organizations that value their expertise in international economics and international relations. They become very desirable candidates.” Some experienced international journalists are ready to make midcareer changes to government

work, to political risk consulting groups and think tanks, Leinz said. “They already know the right questions to ask,” she said. “They’re already excellent writers. Everybody needs people who are strong writers. The combination of their journalism skills and international relations expertise makes them excellent candidates for those organizations.” Some U.S.-based journalists move into jobs overseas. “We had a journalist from Bloomberg who had worked only domestically,” Leinz said. “After completing the degree, she is now in the Singapore ofƂce.” 1ther students earn promotions while still in the program. “I hear all the time from students who are being recognized with promotions and raises even before they graduate,” Leinz said. “Their employers see they are able to contribute immediately.” r

Graduate Certificates Offer Another Way to Advance

S

ometimes professionals don’t need a graduate degree—earning a graduate leXel EertiƂEate instead can provide added insight and employability at a fraction of the cost. “When you’re inside your discipline, such as engineering or healthcare, you focus on that discipline,” said Dr. Marcella Benson-Quaziena, Director of Organization Development and Leadership program at Fielding Graduate University’s School of Leadership Studies based in Santa Barbara, California. “When you get promoted into a management or leadership position, you have to deal with broader organizational issues.” Students in the program want to develop their leadership skills, she said. “One of the big things they take away from the program is the ability to combine theory with practice,”

Dr. Benson-Quaziena said. “They see things in a different way. They understand what makes sense from an organizational context.” Students earning a graduate certiƂcate in Organizational Development and Leadership often already have a master’s degree, Dr. Benson-Quaziena said. The certiƂcate reSuires credit hours, which are offered online. If students later decide to earn a master’s degree in Organizational Development and Leadership, the certiƂcate courses will count toward that degree. Learning the organizational language is a key beneƂt also. “Once they shift their concepts and start expressing their new understanding using organizational language, people look at them differently inside the company,” she said. “Management says, ‘We can put you on that promotion track.’”

Students from all over the country bring a variety of experiences to the classroom. Students also report they learn about themselves. “They say they gain a lot of personal learning about who they are as leaders and how they use themselves as agents of change to make improvements inside the system,” Dr. Benson-Quaziena said. r

RETURN ON INVESTMENT: “Our students tell us they are asked to be on strategic committees because of the information they have learned,” she said. “They begin to engage with strategies going on inside the organization in a different way. They get promoted within the system.”

s more students cross international borders to seek an education and more universities establish international branch campuses, there is a growing need for college administrators to gain global insight. This fall, Georgetown is offering a new Executive Master of Professional Studies in Global Higher Education. The hybrid online and inperson program will include four residencies: two in the 7.S. and two overseas. The Ƃrst international residency will be in Doha, Qatar, in 2019. “You can’t understand today’s higher education without a solid understanding of the global forces that shape it,” said Dr. Stephanie K. Kim, Faculty Director for the master’s programs in higher education at Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies. “Universities have been and will continue to establish international branch campuses. For instance, Georgetown has an overseas campus in Qatar. Even someone who has no intention of working overseas but, say, wants to

work in student affairs, has to understand how student demographics are changing as more international students arrive on campus.” Themes will focus on how international branch campuses operate, including overseas institutional and governance

issues and intercultural questions faced by various university stakeholders. “One interesting issue we’ll be looking at is how Georgetown, a Jesuit university, operates in a predominantly Muslim country,” Dr. Kim said. “How does that look on the ground? What

issues do faculty and students face? How do administrators establish policies and procedures in this context?” Another area the curriculum examines is how to work with international students attending universities in the United States. “International students have to get used to norms in U.S. classrooms that can be different than what they previously experienced, like what is acceptable what is not, and what is expected in submitted work,” Dr. Kim said. “On the administrative side, how do those who work with international student populations establish protocols to ensure students’ academic success?” Additionally, students will delve into the challenges of exporting a U.S.-style liberal arts education to a country with a different, and perhaps more closed, political environment. Many applicants have a background in higher education and either want to transition into a role with a global component or see their current role expanding in that direction. “They see themselves as diplomats of U.S. higher education,” Dr. Kim said. r

ome professionals will DeneƂV from IaininI a soliF understanding of the law and legal issues, without the need to earn a law degree and take the bar exam. A Master of Law degree provides that valuable insight at a lower cost and in about one-third of the time. But this isn’t “Law School Lite.” “A Master of Law degree is for those individuals who have reached a point in their career where they need the knowledge of law, policy and regulation to go further in their professional career path or they have decided that for their own self-growth they want to gain this knowledge,” said Dean José Bahamonde-González, Associate Dean for Professional Education at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. The University of Maryland Law School’s Master of Science in Law (MSL) degree requires 30 credits earned in four semesters and on a part-time basis, seven or eight credits per semester. At the University of Maryland, the law school offers Ƃve specialties healthcare, cybersecurity, environmental, homeland security/ crisis management and patent law. Not surprisingly, healthcare law has become the most popular, Bahamonde-González said. Cybersecurity and homeland security/crisis management, which are now offered online, have also become very popular. Classes for the other three MSL specialties are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Ƃve Saturdays per semester at the University of Maryland College Park campus. The law school’s second MSL class is set to graduate this spring. The Master of Studies in Law (MSL) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, which also requires 30 credit hours, offers 19 specialties, said Alan Meisel, Professor of Law and Director of the MSL Program, one of the early MSL programs in the United States.

“Before they earn the degree, they have trouble making sense of the issues and seeing the big picture. All they know is the small piece they have to deal with. The MSL degree gives them a greater understanding of their field.” Alan Meisel, Professor of Law and Director of the MSL Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law “Our students can take almost all the courses the JD students take,” Meisel said. Like at the University of Maryland, the health law specialty is the most popular, he said. “Many use the degree to do their current jobs better. They’re usually in a career that is highly regulated by the legal system. Before they earn the degree, they have trouble making sense of the issues and seeing the big picture. All they know is the small piece they have to deal with. The MSL degree gives them a greater understanding of their Ƃeld.” In the classrooms, these working professionals learn from each other. Class discussions might include a physician or nurse who has worked in an emergency room for 20 years alongside a military veteran who was stationed in Afghanistan and now works at the Pentagon, he said. “Students are prepared,” Dr. BahamondeGonzález said. “They’re focused.” Some graduates pursue different roles with their current employers while others move to new organizations, he said. “We have had nurses pursue administrative careers inside nursing,” he said. “Some have

moved to the insurance side of the house. We have one person who was very successful in their job search and ended up securing a new job at FDA. During the interview process, the MSL graduate was speciƂcally asked about the FDA course the graduate took as part of their Health Care Law specialty. Another student had a tremendous career as a health care provider and is now interested in developing a consultant practice in the area of malpractice and other Torts issues.” r RETURN ON INVESTMENT: “Some MSL graduates have voluntarily shared with me their promotions and/or new jobs,” he said. “The Ƃnancial investment appears to be quite reasonable compared to the return you may receive from earning the degree. However, I would be happy to discuss the program’s return on investment for graduates and answer any questions in an individual counseling appointment with interested prospective students.”

Specialized Degree in Cultural Heritage Management Helps in Protection of Key Sites

Take your career to the next level. The University of Maryland’s Master’s in Applied Economics Program gives you a professional advantage: a solid background in quantitative analysis for evidence-based policy decisions. Designed for working professionals, our 10-course, 30-credit program can be completed in as little as 15 months. Evening classes offered on campus in College Park or in DC near DuPont Circle.

or most people, the Grand Canyon, the Statue of Liberty, Monticello and similar locations are bucketlist vacation destinations. But someone has to manage and help protect these World Heritage sites. People in these roles typically have backgrounds in historic preservation, archeology, history, folk life and other related Ƃelds. A new Master of Arts in Cultural Heritage Management, offered by Johns Hopkins University Advanced Academic Programs, is part of an emerging trend in niche degrees to enable students to gain skills, knowledge and insight tailored to their speciƂc Ƃeld. Students in the classes learn about how site management relates to cultural heritage law, new technology, as well as challenges such as increased tourism, and sustainability, all within a global perspective said Dr. Sarah J. Chicone, Associate Director of the graduate programs in Cultural Heritage Management and Museum Studies at Johns Hopkins University. “In the United States, we tend to be pretty siloed in our approach to heritage with people focusing on Ƃelds such as archeology, folk life and historic preservation,” Dr. Chicone said. “We have a trans-disciplinary approach that reaches beyond those divides and focuses on the on-theground impact. We look not just at monuments but also at landscapes. We consider the environment and intangible aspects such as food, dance and crafts. We look at law, policy and advocacy as things are changing on the ground.” Students in the online program have been able to immediately discuss and apply what they are learning, particularly in cases such as the reductions late last year in national monument sites at Bears Ears

and Grand Staircase-Escalante in Utah, Dr. Chicone said. The massive reduction is a Ƃrst in the heritage community, and students can follow in real time the lawsuits and impact on the sites, she said. “We’re also seeing proposed fee increases, backlogs of maintenance, increased tourism,” she said. “With increased tourism comes increased impact. The key is to ensure equitable access, despite the challenges sites face.” Students take nine online courses and one on-ground intensive two-week seminar. During the intensive seminar, students will undertake a two-week on-site project where they will partner with a heritage organization, engage in research and network with other heritage management professionals, Dr. Chicone said. Professional opportunities for new jobs or advancement are varied and include museums,

historic sites, heritage preservation management, cultural management Ƃrms, regional governments, tourism departments at local and state levels, national parks, nongovernment organizations, community organizations and the National Park Service, she said. “Our curriculum is intended to help people already in the Ƃeld and to respond nimbly to emerging needs,” Dr. Chicone said. r

Specialized Degree in Biodefense Prepares Professionals For Global Threats

U

nderstanding, analyzing, preparing for and preventing biological threats and weapons of mass destruction is more important in today’s world than ever before. 6o eZcel in this Ć‚eld, people with a policy background need to broaden their science knowledge while those with a science background seek to broaden their understanding of public policy. “We have a diversity of perspectives. We have students who are coming in with degrees in one of the hard sciences such as biology and chemistry,â€? said Dr. Gregory Koblentz, director

of the biodefense graduate programs at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government. “We also have mid-career professionals already working in public health, national security and emergency management who want to get more specialized knowledge and skills to apply to biodefense. We have people who have served as chemical ofĆ‚cers in the military. We have FBI veterans sitting next to fresh-faced biology maLors. 6hey all Ć‚nd they have perspectives and insights they can share that really illuminate the threats and policies.â€?

All courses in the Master of Science in Biodefense are offered both in-person and online, opening the door for students as far away as South America and Germany, Dr. Koblentz said. Courses are designed for those with both science and non-science backgrounds. “The goal is to have students bridge the gap between the science and policy communities,â€? he said. “Our graduates are Ćƒuent in both scientiĆ‚c Largon and bureaucratic acronyms. They serve as translators. Our degree is where science meets security.â€? r

Dr. Gregory Koblentz, director of the biodefense graduate programs at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government RETURN ON INVESTMENT: This specialized degree enables graduates to succeed in a variety of jobs. In fact, students often move into desirable jobs while still working on their degree, Dr. Koblentz said. Another indicator of the success of the program is that for the last several years, students have been chosen to participate in fellowships for rising stars in the biosecurity world offered by the respected think tank, The Center for Health Security at Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health. “We’ve had students get jobs in all the major federal agencies that work on biodefense and weapons of mass destruction issues, he said. “I’ve seen many of my students have to cut back on classes because they get promoted while they’re in the program.

Freshman big man Omari Spellman allows the Wildcats to put five shooters on the floor.

THREE POINTERS

Michigan’s keys to win

ERIC GAY (AP)

Although Michigan has been to the Final Four seven times, it only has one title (1989) to show for it. Here’s what the Wolverines must do to upset Villanova for the championship tonight (9:20, TBS). (EXPRESS)

JERRY BREWER | THE WASHINGTON POST

Behemoth arrives: Versatile Villanova looks unstoppable The frightening thing about Villanova isn’t that the Wildcats can make 18 3-pointers on the biggest stage and leave proud ol’ Kansas in awe after a Final Four blowout. Here’s what really makes blood curl: That trick, nearly impossible to replicate, is a superfluous exhibition that gets the attention of the casual observer. The Wildcats don’t need to stay this hot to beat Michigan for the national title tonight. They have the most diverse and enviable repertoire in men’s college basketball. They can win with shooting. They can win with defense, rebounding and toughness. They can win by turning to the nation’s best player, point guard Jalen Brunson; or by allowing humble

future NBA lottery pick Mikal Bridges to shine; or by spreading the ball to six players that can all score 25 on any night. It took until the final weeks of the season, but the dominant team the sport lacked this year has emerged. The Wolverines must play their best and receive some luck to prevent Villanova from winning its second championship in three years. Coach Jay Wright’s team has the healthiest culture in a sport full of program’s with identity issues. The Wildcats are far from invincible; they have four losses this season. But they’re playing their best and shrugging while everyone else showers them with admiration. “That’s as good a team as we’ve played against that I can remember,” Kansas coach Bill Self said after his team’s 95-79 loss on Saturday night.

Said Kansas center Udoka Azubuike: “It was unreal. I had never seen that before.” It wasn’t just that Villanova tied the previous Final Four record by making 13 shots from 3-point range by halftime. Its defense forced Kansas to play at an uncomfortably fast pace. On both ends, they dictated everything that happened. Unlike previous Villanova squads, this one can play with five shooters on the floor and still have good size, with a starting frontcourt that goes 6-7, 6-9 and 6-9. It used to be that the Wildcats would have to play four smallish guards and a center. Now, they’re a matchup nightmare. You won’t find another perimeter-oriented team

HEAVY FAVORITES

6.5

The number of points by which Villanova was favored over Michigan in the opening spread for the NCAA championship tonight. That made the Wildcats the largest title game favorite since Duke was favored by 7 points over Butler in 2010. J.B.

Women’s basketball title game between Notre Dame and Mississippi St. ended after Express’ deadline

that can match their physical style, either. It’s a system, a discipline and a mentality that Wright has perfected since turning to it exclusively about 12 years ago. “It’s our best offensive team,” Wright said. “ … Our challenge has been that we were so good offensively earlier in the year that we got lazy defensively. So it was hard to get to this point where we are.” Villanova’s run has shown off varying styles of play. It shot just 33.3 percent and made 4-of-24 3-pointers against Texas Tech in the Elite Eight, but still won a gritty defensive affair, 71-59. It labored against West Virginia’s pressure defense, but made 13 3-pointers in a Sweet 16 win. There is no easy-to-decipher template to beat the Wildcats, not now that they have Omari Spellman owning the boards and making long jumpers as a center. Villanova has grown from being a great offensive team that coasts at times to a lockedin, multifaceted machine intent on winning it all again. Michigan could play a great game and still lose.

3 Defend the 3 Keeping the Wildcats from hitting 3s is a must. They shot under 35 percent from 3-point range in their four losses, including a seasonlow 15 percent at Providence.

2 Pick up the pace Villanova ranked 13th in field goal attempts in the regular season. Michigan (54th) must keep up, so Charles Matthews (team-high 405 attempts) should let it fly.

1 Use the size advantage No one on Villanova is taller than 6-9, and the Wildcats could struggle against 6-11 forward Moritz Wagner, who had 24 points and 15 boards in the win over Loyola-Chicago.

Bulls outwork Wizards

ESPN enters morning slot with ‘Get Up!’

Washington allows season-high 18 3-pointers with Wall on the bench From left, Bradley Beal and the Wizards were stifled by Robin Lopez, Lauri Markkanen and the Bulls.

NAM Y. HUH (AP)

BULLS 113, WIZARDS 94 Many times this season, the Wizards have shown a lack of interest, inevitably leading them to lose. On Sunday in Chicago, Washington’s detachment proved to be even greater than the power of a tanking opponent. The Bulls sent out a rotation that only made sense for a team in search of a high lottery pick and still won 113-94. Sunday marked the second straight afternoon start for the Wizards (42-35), who did not play point guard John Wall in the second half of the backto-back set. On Saturday, Wall played in his first game since a two-month recovery from knee surgery, scoring 15 points with 14 assists as the Wizards clinched a playoff berth with a 107-93 win over Charlotte. The effort and performance without Wall reflected Washington’s problems in a defeat to a Bulls team that features no stars. Chicago did not play starters Robin Lopez and Justin Holiday in the second half and instead gave significant minutes to bench players Ryan Arcidiacono and Cristiano Felicio, and yet these Bulls — with 51 losses and only 26 wins — still overpowered

Washington for much of the game. The Wizards lost their grip in the first quarter and could not recover. With 3:12 remaining in the opening period, center Marcin Gortat found a cutting Markieff Morris for a dunk. The easy bucket had pulled Washington to within 22-21 and forced the Bulls to call time out. After the huddle, however, the Wizards turned to three reserves, and the Bulls drilled four consecutive 3-pointers during a 14-0 run. Chicago made 18 3-pointers

overall, the most the Wizards have allowed this season. Bulls rookie Lauri Markkanen led all scorers with 23 points and made 5-of-8 looks from beyond the arc, but even he sat down through the entire fourth quarter. Chicago shot 52.4 percent from the field, 52.9 percent from 3-point range. Otto Porter Jr. led Washington with 17 points. Bradley Beal scored 15 but missed all six of his 3-point shots. CANDACE BUCKER

In its four decades on the air, ESPN has mostly avoided producing morning shows. Beset by cord-cutting and forays into a divided political climate, the network is trying something different. At 7 a.m. today, ESPN launches “Get Up!” — a live three-hour daily talk show featuring Michelle Beadle, Jalen Rose and Mike Greenberg, below. Hiring executive producer Bill Wolff, the architect of “The Rachel Maddow Show,” and utilizing a Manhattan waterfront set suggest that this is an expensive gamble for the network. (TWP)

Gio Gonzalez struck out seven and allowed one run on five hits and a walk over six innings. Philly wins 10th straight despite missing Embiid By beating the Hornets 119-102 on Sunday in Charlotte, the 76ers posted their 10th straight victory for their longest winning streak since 2003. Ben Simmons led the way with 20 points and 15 assists, and Marco Belinelli had 22 points on 9-for-10 shooting. Joel Embiid sat out after undergoing surgery Saturday for an orbital bone fracture. His projected return is as soon as two weeks. (AP)

‘Queer Eye,’ ‘This Is Us’ are changing how we view male tears on TV TELEVISION We’re having a moment for male tears — no, not the kind that the popular feminist mug metaphorically collects in pursuit of bringing down the patriarchy. We’re talking literal tears that men shed in moments of televised vulnerability. Take the Netflix reboot of “Queer Eye.” Yes, it’s a makeover show with bubbly gay men instructing schleppy men on the wonders of slim-cut jeans, fiveminute grooming routines, Ikea and avocados. But it’s also a show about men who are stuck and held in place by fear, insecurity, past trauma or rigid norms of what it means to be a man. In the process, “Queer Eye” subtly dings toxic masculinity. Giving these strangers haircuts and time to spend a few minutes taking care of themselves also gives them a chance — or a push — to open up a bit about what’s bubbling below the surface. Sometimes these guys cry, surprising even themselves. After a Fab Five member puts his hand on that of Tom Jackson, a bearded 57-year-old Georgia man who lives in a basement apartment and drinks “redneck margaritas,” the emotions build

to a breaking point. “You guys are making me cry,” Tom says through sobs. “I’m sorry. … I’m going to miss all of you guys.” America saw a pretty rare sight: an older guy crying because other men showed him he was worthy of attention and love. Late-night comic Jimmy Kimmel has cried repeatedly during his show’s monologue — a time typically reserved for topical jokes — about his newborn son’s heart surgery, mass shootings and a dentist killing a lion. For Kimmel’s part, he hates that he cries on TV: “When I see a screen grab of me that night, I was talking about my son, or I was talking about Las Vegas, and my face is all red and I have tears in my eyes, I can’t browse away from it quickly enough,” he says. But the impact of Kimmel’s raw emotions have influenced policy debates and changed how viewers see him. On NBC’s weepy drama “This Is Us,” a lot of the crying on camera is done by men. There was the time that Justin Hartley’s Kevin broke down on a lawn, weeping over his addiction and openly declaring, “I’m in pain out here! Can’t you see I’m in pain? I just need somebody to help me.” Sterling K. Brown’s Randall cries all over the place: when he says goodbye to his foster daughter; when he gets parenting advice from the hardware store

Give men something to cry about

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

“Queer Eye”

Driven to tears TV and movies have shown us men crying on camera before. Some have shed manly tears when dealing with grave situations, like families dying, or war (“Rambo”). Then there are the stoic ones who get choked up but keep the tears back, like Clint Eastwood (“In the Line of Fire”). But crying guys have often been punchlines to jokes, either as blubbering messes (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) or embarrassed dudes with “something in my eye.” E.I.

Tracy Morgan returns to TV in this comedy — co-created by “Get Out” director Jordan Peele — as an ex-con adjusting to life after 15 years in prison. Tiffany Haddish and Cedric the Entertainer also star. (EXPRESS)

employee; when he has a nervous breakdown in his office. At a time when pop culture is grappling with sexism behind the scenes and how women are represented on screen, depictions of masculinity are slowly being rewritten, too. It’s surprisingly refreshing to see men cry and be vulnerable in these ways. For men watching, these scenes give them permission to do the same — without explaining it away as just something in their eye. ELAHE IZADI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Japan’s “Terrace House” lacks the drama of U.S. reality shows — for the better.

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

Home, serene home: ‘Terrace House’ is my favorite boring show Do you like those Japanese watercolors that are melancholy and delicately wrought and that magically make the stress of modern life disappear when you look at them? Then “Terrace House” might be the reality show for you. The Japanese series puts six young people in an airy, modern house, all tranquil beiges and grays, with a shimmering pool outside. And instead of the battles and backstabbing that dominate American reality shows, there are low-key human interactions. Three cycles of the Japanese show are streaming on Netflix, each with its own sextet of

youths. In the “Boys & Girls in the City” cycle, set in Tokyo, aspiring firefighter Arman is smitten with hat designer Arisa. They go look at Christmas lights and hold hands. He politely asks her to be his girlfriend. Sadly, she says she thinks of him as a “brother.” The Terrace Housemates discuss what happened, how cruel her rejection was, how she led him on by holding hands. What is utterly amazing is how civil they are in their conversation. Even though the show can be sad at times, its aura of calm mellows me. I especially love how there’s so much unspoken stuff, just like in real life. What is Arman really thinking? Why is Arisa so obsessed

with making hats? Beats me! I also like the fact that mundane matters are part of the mix. The housemates vacuum and wash dishes, for example, which leads to numbing yet somehow comforting dialogue like this: He: “Shall we continue cleaning?” She: “Let’s clean.” The Terrace House dwellers are not all average folks — there are more than a few aspiring actor/models. Then again, Arman has a gig on a landscaping crew where his job includes to “help fill the garden with dirt.” The only jarring note is the inclusion of scenes of commentary by Japanese celebs. They yammer in loud tones while an audience (or laugh track) howls. Their raucous behavior made me long for the quiet inside “Terrace House.” And there’s lots of quiet to be had: In March, Netflix added a set of episodes called “Opening New Doors.” Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse

Bite-gate, case closed? Page Six claims actress Sanaa Lathan bit Beyonce at the party made infamous by Tiffany Haddish last week. The outlet cites “numerous sources” who say Lathan was talking to JAY-Z after a concert in Los Angeles in December, “but when Bey stepped in, Lathan playfully bit her on the chin.” A source told Page Six that “everyone [at the party] was talking about how anyone would dare to do that.” Lathan has denied that she bit Beyonce. Taylor Swift returned to her country roots Saturday during a surprise appearance at Nashville’s famed Bluebird Cafe, joining songwriter Craig Wiseman. The 28-year-old Swift received a standing ovation from the roughly 40 patrons. Swift grabbed an acoustic guitar and played her pop hit “Shake It Off” before performing “Love Story” and “Better Man,” which won a Grammy Award for the best country duo or group performance for Little Big Town. Swift reminded Wiseman that he had passed on the opportunity to write “Love Story” with her. The performance was filmed as part of a documentary honoring the cafe’s 35th anniversary. (AP)
