Police in Bettendorf, Iowa, are asking for help finding two hardened criminals who made off with a 3-foot statue of a bear, UPI reported Wednesday.

The couple was leaving a local restaurant when the man grabbed a carved wooden bear that greets diners with a sign reading, “Welcome.” Bettendorf police posted photos on Facebook of the crooks fleeing in a Nissan Armada and asked people to contact them with any tips. (EXPRESS)

A voter in Winneconne, Wis., wants to bring ducks to the polling station with a sign that reads: “If you don’t vote, you can’t squawk.” Town clerk Yvonne Zobel says the voter asked officials Tuesday if she could bring three caged ducks and the sign to the town hall for November’s election. Whimsical, not practical PERSPECTIVE The whimsy of the idea appeals to me: a city dotted with scooters, beckoning to anyone who fancies a ride to work with a side of childhood nostalgia.

But in reality, I’m not sure when I would ever want to use a dockless scooter, the latest entry in the District’s growing menu of transportation options.

Let’s start with the scooters themselves, 50 of which LimeBike parked last month in the District. They’re quite sturdy.

On the sidewalk, they stand on their own, thanks to a small kickstand. On the move, it’s easy to stand with both feet on the elevated platform. Balancing is no problem, but the platform feels higher off the ground than the childhood scooter I remember.

The LimeBike scooter aims to elevate the childhood Razor to valid adult transportation with one very significant addition: a motor.

On the one hand, this is a dream. With just the pressure of a thumb, you can chug along

with ease, blazing downhill and moving fairly steadily uphill without ever needing to propel yourself by foot unless you want the extra momentum.

On the other hand, it’s not perfect. The motor protests, in a whine, throughout uphill legs. The brakes screech, too, and don’t allow a rider to apply much variable pressure. There’s no gradual slowing down on this scooter; either you’re riding, or you’re suddenly braking.

Flying down the road on a bike can make you feel just as much like a kid.

The scooters, which for some reason include a tiny electronic screen telling you how fast you’re going, say they can get up to almost 15 miles per hour. But the lack of control over speed

strongly suggests to me that you should never consider riding one of these in a crowded bike lane.

The bike lanes are already frustrating enough for cyclists, with cars and pedestrians frequently using them in ways they’re not meant to be used.

Riding one of these in the street with cars also seems incredibly foolhardy. So that leaves the sidewalk — which basically rules the scooters out for most trips downtown, even though LimeBike has been leaving plenty of them on street corners there.

After a ride, I wouldn’t be inclined to do it again, largely because of the price. Capital Bikeshare and Jump generally cost $2 per half-hour; the other bikeshare companies, including LimeBike, generally charge $1 per half-hour. The scooters charge by the minute.

My 28-minute trip came to $5.20.

That’s a fine price for a fun spree, and perhaps these scooters will become mostly joyriding vehicles for tourists. But it’s far too high above the cost of a bike or a bus if LimeBike expects Washingtonians to choose scooters for our daily commutes.

THE DISTRICT On the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s murder, one of the activist pastors who has tried to follow in his footsteps spoke of the task at hand after half a century.

“We cannot be those who merely love the tombs of the prophets,” said the Rev. William Barber II. “We do not celebrate assassinations and killings of our prophets. We find the place they fell; we reach down in the blood; we pick up the baton and carry it forward. And we must.”

Religious activists from a wide range of faiths commemorated King’s death in that spirit Wednesday: with pledges to carry on his work of tackling systemic racism. They gathered at memorial events in Washington, Memphis, Atlanta and other cities.

As dawn broke at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in D.C., the Rev. Dawn Sanders shouted one of the first prayers of the day.

“King’s blood calls out to us.

And what are we prepared to do?

We thank you, God, for all that will be said and done. But we will not leave here without You pricking our consciousness,” she said.

Angry faculty hold walkout at D.C. school Frustration at Anacostia High School boiled over Wednesday, with the entire teaching staff walking out of class to protest building conditions. Teachers said the cafeteria had flooded and no toilets were working when educators arrived at the Southeast school.

The school system said repairs to toilets were complete by 10:15 a.m. The demonstration, teachers said, reflects mounting vexation over unreasonable expectations placed on teachers and disparities between schools in D.C.’s wealthiest and poorest neighborhoods. Hackers attempted to change grades at a Vienna high school, using an attack that ironically began with an email from a school club charged with upholding honor and integrity, according to a search warrant.

Airbnb starts collecting tax from some renters Airbnb is now collecting “hotel” taxes from some short-term renters of private residences on behalf of Alexandria. WTOP-FM reported Tuesday that Alexandria assistant director of finance Kevin Greenlief said the tax is being collected on the front end by the platform, so it simplifies the process for homeowners.

However, short-term rental hosts using other platforms need to collect the tax themselves and submit the revenue to the city.

Dennis Diggs was cleared by a jury Tuesday in the 2016 death of Jamie Christian. Diggs was found not guilty in January for the 2015 slaying of Jarrell Hicks, 29. Days earlier, prosecutors dropped all charges against Diggs in the slaying of Jackson Bleier, 22. Defense attorney Donald C. The acknowledgment was part of a broader disclosure by Facebook on Wednesday about the ways in which various levels of user data have been taken by everyone from malicious actors to ordinary app developers.

“We’re an idealistic and optimistic company, and for the first decade, we were really focused on all the good that connecting people brings,” Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said on a call with reporters Wednesday. “But it’s clear now that we didn’t focus enough on preventing abuse and thinking about how people could use these tools for harm as well.”

National Guard set to deploy to Mexican border IMMIGRATION President Trump and borderstate governors are working to “immediately” deploy the National Guard to the U.S.Mexico border to fight illegal immigration, with some troops potentially arriving Wednesday night, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said.

The National Guard will be sent to assist Border Patrol agents until legislation is passed to close “loopholes” that the Trump administration says allow certain undocumented immigrants to stay in the country and the “catch-and-release” policy is ended, according to a person familiar with the expected White House proposal.

Catch and release is a practice of releasing undocumented immigrants from custody while they await their hearings.

The troops will be in a support role, doing tasks such as road development and intelligence gathering, according to the person familiar with the plan.

Nielsen said Trump was expected to sign a proclamation Wednesday that would direct her department and the Pentagon to deploy the National Guard.

A day before a woman opened fire at YouTube headquarters, her father said he warned police that his daughter was upset with the company’s handling of her videos and might be planning to go to its offices, but authorities say her relatives gave no indication she might turn violent.

Police also said Nasim Aghdam, who wounded three people before killing herself, had visited a gun range before Tuesday’s attack. She entered a courtyard at YouTube’s main offices south of San Francisco, pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds.

She told relatives that she believed the company was suppressing her videos, which included segments about veganism, animal cruelty and exercise.

SYRIA The White House said Wednesday that the U.S. military mission in Syria was coming to “a rapid end” but offered no timeline for a withdrawal, even as President Trump has insisted it’s time for American troops to return home.

With allies anxious about a hasty U.S. withdrawal, the Trump administration said it would stay in war-torn Syria to defeat the Islamic State’s “small” presence that “our forces have not already eradicated.”

But White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders suggested that would not be a long-term endeavor, describing the extremist group that once controlled vast swaths of Syria and Iraq as “almost completely destroyed.”

There were clear signs the U.S. was narrowing its mission in Syria, still in a civil war, and would focus only on defeating ISIS and not the broader task of stabilizing the country and ensuring the extremists cannot re-emerge.

“We will continue to consult with our allies and friends regarding future plans,” Sanders said in a written statement. “We expect countries in the region and beyond, plus the United Nations, to work toward peace and ensure” that ISIS never returns.

Trump met with top aides Tuesday before telling reporters that he wanted to “get out” and “bring our troops back home.” CIA Director Mike Pompeo and other advisers strongly advised Trump against too quick a withdrawal, according to U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

ECONOMY The world’s two biggest economies stand at the edge of the most perilous trade conflict since World War II. Yet there’s still time to pull back from the brink.

Financial markets bounced up and down Wednesday over the brewing U.S.-China trade war after Beijing and Washington proposed tariffs on $50 billion worth of each other’s products.

“The risks of escalation are clear,” Adam Slater, global economist at Oxford Economics, wrote in a research note.

“Threats to the U.S.-China relationship are the most dangerous for global growth.”

There’s time for the two countries to resolve the dispute through negotiations in the coming weeks. The U.S. will not tax 1,300 Chinese imports — from hearing aids to flamethrowers — until it has spent weeks collecting public comments. It’s likely to get an earful from American farmers and businesses that want to avoid a trade war at all costs.

Also, China did not say when it would impose tariffs on 106 U.S. products, including soybeans and small aircraft, and it announced it is challenging America’s import duties at the World Trade Organization.

Nearly two months after Anthony Borges was shot numerous times while shielding classmates from gunfire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the 15-yearold has been released from the hospital, his attorney said. The boy had barricaded a door to try to protect fellow students during the school shooting Feb. 14 in Parkland, Fla., according to CNN. Anthony’s attorney, Alex Arreaza, said Wednesday that the teen — the last survivor to leave the hospital — was released over the weekend and that it’s unclear so far whether he will return to the school.

Special counsel Robert Mueller informed President Trump’s attorneys last month that he is continuing to investigate the president but does not consider him a criminal target at this point, according to people familiar with the discussions. In private negotiations in early March about a possible presidential interview, Mueller described Trump as a subject of his investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. A subject is a person who has engaged in conduct that is under investigation but against whom there is not sufficient evidence to bring charges. (TWP)

Wisconsin Democrats declared victory on Tuesday night after Milwaukee Judge Rebecca Dallet won a bitter race for a seat on the state’s Supreme Court. Dallet’s win over Judge Michael Screnock shrank the conservative majority on the court to one vote. Both candidates and their supporters turned the race, which is technically nonpartisan, into a political referendum. Dallet ran early ads that accused President Trump of attacking civil rights, while Screnock portrayed himself as a “rule of law” conservative. With four homers in six games, Harper is showing early signs that he’s ‘getting even better’ MLB Bryce Harper was hanging around a fairly quiet clubhouse Tuesday, which was just like any other day — except for the fact that Harper had hit three home runs and walked five times in his previous two games. The lineup posted on the wall listed Harper hitting second, which is something he had not done yet this season. Assistant hitting coach Joe Dillon walked into the nearempty room and stopped Harper.

“The skipper wants to see you,” Dillon told him.

“Uh-oh,” Harper said, grabbing his bat and taking a few steps toward the door. “I heard Syracuse starts today so …”

Dave Martinez did not summon Harper to send him down to Class AAA. He needed to tell him the lineup card had a typo, that he would be hitting third

Tuesday as usual, not second like that lineup card said. Martinez had considered moving Harper up in the order against Julio Teheran, who had given up seven homers to Harper in his career. Harper would hit the eighth that night.

Before a loss to Atlanta on Wednesday, Harper was hitting .400 on the season, with four home runs and seven walks in his first five games. In his sixth game, he went 0-for-3 with his first two strikeouts of the year, dropping his average to .333 but drawing two more walks.

What stands out to those who have seen him regularly during the last few years are the direction of his home runs and the outs he has made in between. Most of Harper’s homers have come to the middle of the field. He is not hooking them down the line.

Braves capture series Mike Foltynewicz outpitched Max Scherzer, Preston Tucker hit a three-run homer in the first inning and the Braves beat the Nationals 7-1 on Wednesday to claim two out of three in Atlanta. Harper grounded out in the first inning of Tuesday’s game, and that brought home a run. In one game in Cincinnati, Harper hit two soft sacrifice flies. He has half as many walks (9) as

at-bats (18).

“Bryce is a great hitter. He’s getting even better. It seems like the plate discipline [is coming] even more,” Howie Kendrick said.

Harper’s discipline has always maintained an inverse relationship to his movement at the plate. When his head is still, he doesn’t chase pitches out of the zone, and he hits those balls in the zone that brave pitchers throw him. So far, Harper is doing just that, coiling and unleashing, but not wasting any movement in the process.

Beginning next year, the home of the Masters in Georgia will host a 54-hole event for top female amateurs who will become the first women to play a tournament there. A hype unlike any other After flashing vintage form, Woods leads a deep cast of contenders at the Masters

GOLF Blame it on a generation that thinks nothing was ever as great as what just happened.

Or maybe it was a tough winter, and nothing melts frigid memories like the sight of azaleas, dogwoods and Rae’s Creek.

It sure didn’t hurt that all the best players, as young Jon Rahm, 23, and as ancient as Phil Mickelson, 47, are winning tournaments and hitting their stride.

“This is my 42nd Masters,” Augusta National club chairman Fred Ridley said Wednesday. “I have never been a part of this week where there’s been any more excitement.”

But the real reason for all the talk that this Masters might be the best ever still comes down to one guy: Tiger Woods.

In San Diego, Los Angeles, Tampa and Orlando, fans flocked by the thousands when Woods returned to competition after a fourth back surgery and suddenly looked very much like a 14-time major champion capable of resuming his pursuit of the 18

majors won by Jack Nicklaus.

Woods, 42, was back to producing Sunday-sounding roars at the Masters by making eagles on the back nine. And those were just practice rounds.

“I have four rounds to play,” he said. “So let’s just kind of slow down.”

No one knows hype like Woods, especially in Augusta, Ga. A generation ago, he had a chance to become the first player to hold all four professional majors, and he heard all about it for more than seven months leading into the Masters. He beat two of his biggest rivals of 2001, Mickelson and David Duval.

“It’s the same thing,” Woods said. “I’ve got to go play and then let the chips fall where they may.

And hopefully, I end up on top.

But I’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Woods has played nine-hole practice rounds for three days leading into the first round today.

Fred Couples has been at his side for all of them, and he didn’t see much different from 10 years ago.

Expected to challenge Phil Mickelson: At 47, the threetime Masters champion would be the oldest man to win at Augusta.

He ended a nearly five-year drought with a win last month at the WGC-Mexico.

Dustin Johnson: He could become the first No. 1-ranked player in the world to win the Masters since Woods did it in 2002. Johnson missed last year’s Masters after falling down a flight of stairs.

Jordan Spieth: The 2015 Masters champ has three major titles, and he’s only 24. He hasn’t won an event this year but is coming off his first top-five finish, tying for third Sunday in Houston.

Bubba Watson: After two years without a win and tumbling to 98th in the world, the two-time Masters champ is No. 19 after wins at the Genesis Open and WGC-Match Play.

Rory McIlroy: He’s won every major but this one and closed strong to win at Bay Hill this year.

It was one of the lower moments in his life. And now, Masters champion? Really?

That’s four long days away, assuming he makes it that far — Woods has missed the cut in every major but the Masters — and there are plenty of obstacles along the way. Woods said it’s been nearly three years since he putted on bent grass like Augusta’s.

By contending on the back nine at his past two tournaments, Woods has fans believing again.

Maybe all the attention on Woods will help his competitors. Or maybe it doesn’t matter.

In ‘Paper Dolls,’ elderly Jewish men and their gay caretakers connect STAGE “It’s about a group of outsiders,” director Mark Brokaw says of Mosaic Theater Company’s musical “Paper Dolls,” which premiered last week at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. “And we’re always afraid of outsiders.”

The show was inspired by a 2006 documentary about five gay Filipino men who, in the early

2000s, worked in Tel Aviv as caretakers for elderly Orthodox and Hasidic men, and headlined a drag show on their day off.

“Paper Dolls” has evolved in the transition from movie to musical, but it hasn’t changed as much as the world outside the theater.

“Gender, which is all over the place now, is very much part of the story, as is immigration,” Brokaw says. “The play speaks to all of that in a way that has made it more interesting and have more heat for me, just because it has paralleled what we

“They all share a resilience, they all share a positive outlook,” Brokaw says. “They just refuse to give up even when things are bad.”

That shift in perspective is something Brokaw hopes happens to the audience as well.

“We are going through the same experience of the people in the play, just being open more fully to other people, other worlds, other cultures, other sexualities,” he says. “How they view themselves in the world and live their lives and how we need to live our lives with them.”

But they’re nothing compared to their 13-year-old daughter, Mahogany. “She eats books!” Ramunda says. “She reads when she wakes up, she reads when she goes to bed, she reads as I’m driving her to the bus, reads while she’s waiting for her braces to get fixed.” Mahogany was the inspiration for the Youngs’ online shop, MahoganyBooks (1231 Good Hope Road SE), which specializes in books by, for and about African-Americans. In November, Derrick and Ramunda opened a physical shop in the Anacostia Arts Center, expanding their business to include events featuring local authors. On a day off, Ramunda, Derrick and Mahogany are setting out from their Northern Virginia home on bikes — with books packed, of course.

Derrick: Our bike ride usually ends up at one of my favorite spaces, BTS: Burger Tap & Shake over by George Washington University. Everybody’s getting the burger of their choice and a shake. I know my wife’s favorite is the B.T.S. shake.

Ramunda: It’s Butterfinger, Twix and Snickers — B.T.S. It’s so good!

Derrick: And I get the Oreo shake. My daughter, she switches it up sometimes. When I go biking by myself, what I like to do is get lost and find different stuff, then take my wife and daughter. That’s how I found BTS — that became one of our favorite spots in the city.

Derrick: We might do a movie if everyone’s ready to stay up.

One of my new favorite places is the Imax at the Air and Space Museum. I got to see “Black Panther” there; that was fantastic. They haven’t been yet, so I’m really excited to take them to that theater. “Avengers: Infinity War” is coming out — that’s one we’re looking to see. And then “Acrimony” will be a date night — we won’t take Mahogany to that one.

You tweeted that your story about deciding to freeze your eggs is the most personal essay you’ve written. Why does it feel especially intimate to you?

There’s both an emotion and an urgency to that essay, because this is exactly what is truly going on in my life right now.

There’s a dead bird on the cover of humorist Sloane Crosley’s newest collection of essays, “Look Alive Out There.” Or maybe the bird’s alive. It’s hard to tell, and that’s the point, the 39-yearold author says: “Pardon the pun, but it dovetails nicely with the title.” The image also points to a problem all writers face: The process of putting an experience into words robs it of some of its vitality. But comedy is often only apparent in retrospect, once a stressful or even perilous experience is safely in the rearview mirror. Crosley, who has written two other essay collections and a novel (and will discuss her new book at Sixth & I on Tuesday), brings her comic perspective to a variety of predicaments in “Look Alive Out There” — including the mundane (having a cab stolen from her by a handicapped woman) and the mortal (nearly dying on a mountain). SADIE DINGFELDER (EXPRESS) As a personal essayist, do you take a lot of notes during your day-to-day life?

No, I think that would make me relatively insufferable to be around. I’m already in a danger zone with my friends. If we’re going to the movies and my friend is late and I’m like, “You’re late,” I’ll get a “Well, why don’t you write an essay about it?” Having said that, I think there’s a

way — as both a human being a nd a writer — that I move through the world, which is with one eye open and one eye kinda cocked. I’m totally willing, if I’m in a foreign city, to go down that dark alley with you, but

I will also be complaining the entire time.

But you’re not risk-averse.

You went mountain climbing in Ecuador without proper preparation or equipment and nearly died! Were your parents horrified to read that story?

If I had called them when I was on my way and said, “So, I’m going to go up this active volcano

with a guide that doesn’t speak English in a foreign country,” I think they would have been concerned. But once it’s in the past and you’re writing about it, you’re clearly in front of a laptop with all your fingers intact, suddenly everything becomes amusing or funny. In a weird way, humor essays share a little bit of DNA with survival tales or addiction memoirs.

I think a lot of people read your nonfiction to escape, too. [“Look Alive Out There”] isn’t so much escapism as it is reminding you of your other problems, having the freedom to be annoyed by things that aren’t nuclear fallout and Donald Trump. You are also allowed to be annoyed when a woman in a wheelchair and her husband steal your cab.

What are you going to write next?

I’m working on a novel now. I absolutely love writing essays, but there’s also something incredibly gratifying about having to make everything up, and having this entire world that you’re crafting that, even as the writer, you can escape into. That’s something you only get with fiction.

The maestro: A conductor both passionate and precise, Miguel HarthBedoya has brought the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra to new artistic heights over his 18-year tenure. He’s also chatty, often giving the audience listening tips before a concert.

The maestro: By championing — and recording — new works by American composers, conductor David Alan Miller has garnered the Albany Symphony plenty of accolades and awards through his more than 25 years in charge, including a Grammy.

The music: The program features relatively new music, including two pieces with literary influences. One work, “Bel Canto” by Peruvian composer Jimmy Lopez, was inspired by Ann Patchett’s 2001 novel of the same name.

Another piece, Leonard Bernstein’s “Serenade,” takes inspiration from Plato’s “Symposium,” a series of speeches in praise of love.

The music: Waterways thread through the program. There’s “The Mighty Erie Canal,” a piece for children’s chorus and orchestra by Dorothy Chang that is written from the perspective of a boat-pulling mule. Also on offer: “The Manhattan Bridges,” a jazzy, joyful piano concerto by Michael Torke.

Perfect for: Tuba aficionados. The orchestra will be performing a rare concerto starring the instrument, Michael Daugherty’s “Reflections on the Mississippi.”

Perfect for: People who need more visual stimulation than violin bows. Six dancers will take the stage for “RIFT,” a ballet by British composer Anna Clyne.

The maestro: A lot of conductors are called “rock stars,” but with Krzysztof Urbanski, the label fits. The Polish superstar is young (35), has great hair and brings drama and intensity to everything he conducts.

The maestro: Gianandrea Noseda began his tenure as music director at the NSO last year, and the conductor is already infusing the group with newfound excitement and flair.

The music: Urbanski is showcasing music composed by his fellow countrymen, including Witold Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, which Urbanski has called the “best concerto of all concertos ever written.”

The music: Italian composers are known for being lyrical and light, while Russians are fierce and stormy. What happens when you bring these two together? Find out at this program, which includes two Russian piano pieces reimagined for orchestra by Italian composers, including Alfredo Casella’s early-1900s arrangement of Mily Balakirev’s “Islamey.”

Perfect for: Open-minded listeners. The concerto, to be performed with superstar cellist Alisa Weilerstein, is less of a conversation between the soloist and orchestra, and more of an argument — with the ensemble interrupting and seemingly bullying the cello.

Here’s some fun — to the 100th power USA Science & Engineering Festival aims to rock the world of kids who think STEM isn’t for them FESTIVALS Remember your science fair?

All those tri-fold poster boards and your lame experiment that had little to do with actual science and more to do with driving your parents crazy because you waited until the last minute?

The USA Science & Engineering Festival isn’t that.

“The Air Force is bringing an F-16 and parking that in the middle of the event,” says Marc Schulman, executive director of the festival. “The Coast Guard is pulling out one of their patrol boats from the Potomac and bringing it. The Secret Service is bringing an actual limo.”

All of this is to get kids in grades K-12 to shake off the “mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell” lessons that put them to sleep, especially those who believe that STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — isn’t for them.

“If you are somebody who struggles in math or struggles in science, there is going to be stuff at the festival that you are going to enjoy,” Schulman says.

“It’s almost going to trick you into liking math and science.”

The annual festival — the largest of its kind in the country — prides itself on broadening people’s understanding about where they can find STEM. It’s not all test tubes and petri dishes.

“We have about 120 government agencies, stuff like DoD, NASA, NIH, NSA,” Schulman says. “If they have three letters, if they have science in their world, they’re there.”

“If you are somebody who struggles in math or struggles in science, there is going to be stuff at the festival that you are going to enjoy.”

Still, the festival is not about tempting kids into higher STEM education.

“We have the American Welding Society [with] welding simulators, because skilled trades use just as much STEM as a scientist.

Carpenters and plumbers use more STEM on a daily basis than you or I do,” Schulman says. (This reporter can confirm.) “We’re not necessarily proponents of the idea you have to wear a white coat and get a master’s degree.”

Above all, the festival wants to get kids involved, with interactive exhibits and events like “Meet the Scientist & Engineer” in the Career Pavilion. “All of the different exhibits, you have to touch,” Schulman says. “We pride ourselves on the fact that kids leave with their hands dirty.”

The Winner tells the story of a punk kid who tries boxing as a lark, gets the tar punched out of him, and starts training for real. Combining action and musical interludes, it established a template for dozens of Nikkatsu films. (Dir.: Umetsugu Inoue, Japan, 1957, 98 min., DCP, Japanese with English subtitles)

The first feature-length theatrical film shot in Konicolor, The Green Music Box typifies Umetsugu Inoue’s creative use of color. It also marked the debut of fourteen-year-old Ruriko Asaoka, whose character becomes entangled with a spy trying to steal her father’s secrets.

Hong Kong’s mighty Shaw Brothers studio lent a new sheen to the territory’s musicals when it brought in Umetsugu Inoue from Japan. A standout among Inoue’s seventeen productions for Shaw is Hong Kong Nocturne, a lavish song, dance, and drama confection. A passport to Korean food You could (and should) spend an entire day sampling the cuisine without ever leaving Annandale

Daniel Kramer, a co-founder of Duke’s Grocery, made headlines last week with news that he’ll open D.C.’s first traditional Korean barbecue restaurant — with open-air grills embedded at each table — in Shaw next year. But you don’t have to wait till then to eat great Korean food.

All you have to do is cross the Virginia border and head to Annandale. The city has become a dining destination for Fairfax County and its dense Korean population as well as for patrons throughout the area. In fact, there are so many compelling places to try that you could spend an entire day bouncing among them. Here’s how. Your Korean dining extravaganza begins with pastries, coffee and tea at this inviting two-level cafe (complete with outdoor dining upstairs). Wire baskets are provided for shoppers to load up on all sorts of baked goods — sweet pumpkin cake rolls, chestnut bread loaves, mocha buns. The cafe menu is wide-ranging: You can get a nitro coffee — and a bulgogi quesadilla with marinated beef and mozzarella.

Don’t miss the juk, a comforting rice porridge, at Siroo. One of its biggest fans is chef Danny Lee, who co-owns Mandu in D.C. He is amazed by the varieties of juk offered, including ginseng chicken, spicy kimchi — a side dish and staple of Korean cuisine — and abalone.

“They have 20 different versions that are all cooked in different broths, and all have different proteins and different produce in them,” Lee says.

Bone-broth fans need to try the soups and stews at Gom Ba Woo, says Rob Rubba, the chef at Hazel in D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood. Rubba, whose wife is Korean, often cooks Korean food at home and at Hazel, but when he’s looking for a warming soup such as sulrung tang (a beefbone broth with rice and noodles), he heads to Gom Ba Woo. “The way they do [the bone broth] so slow with the marrow bone, it just looks like you’re eating a bowl of warm milk,” he says. “It’s just the best beef broth you’ve ever had.” Stir in scallions and chili paste to spice things up.

This popular French-Asian bakery chain features wooden display cases stocked with such Parisian desserts as croissants stuffed with strawberries, along with other specialties: kimchi croquettes, soft milk bread buns and chewy, orblike doughnuts stuffed with a spoonful of sweet pumpkin filling.

Grab a lavender milk tea latte with a pastry, or cool down with a bingsoo, a Korean dessert stacked with toppings — ice cream, red beans and fresh fruit — on a mound of fluffy shaved ice.

It can be tough to get a table at this tiny restaurant, which excels in seafood stews such as daegu maeun tang, a spicy codfish soup, and bo ssam, a build-it-yourself, seasonedpork-belly dish with cabbage leaves, kimchi and seasoned radish. Also of note: budae jjigae, or “army base stew,” a hearty red hot pot inspired by the surplus food from American military bases eaten during the Korean War. The dish — bubbling with hot dogs, kimchi and dried instant ramen — could easily feed four.

David Chang may be one of the most famous chefs in America, but his dad still makes the decisions when they’re eating out in Annandale.

“He calls in the orders” in advance, Chang says. Their destination is often Choong Hwa Won, where they go for the jjajangmyun. An order of the Chinese-Korean dish brings a giant helping of fresh, chewy, wheat-based noodles with pork, vegetables and black bean curd sauce, which servers can cut with scissors for easier slurping.

The stainless steel table will also be packed with banchan (an array of gratis side dishes — including kimchi, seasoned soybean sprouts or cucumber salad — that traditionally arrives with each meal), rice, a steamed egg dish and soup.

The highlights at this 24-hour spot include dakdori tang (a spicy stew with potatoes, carrots and chicken) and handmade, knife-cut noodles served in the broth of your choice.

But To Soc Chon is best known for one dish, and it’s a big reason the restaurant is open all hours.

“They make sundae guk, which is like a stew or soup where the base is Korean blood sausage,” says Mandu’s Danny Lee. “It’s pretty much known as hangover soup.”

National Symphony Orchestra Gianandrea Noseda, conductor This program filled with Russian and Italian inspirations reflects new NSO Music Director Gianandrea Noseda’s Italian heritage as well as his experience at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, where he held his first important conducting post. The concert is also dedicated to the memory of Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, who had originally been scheduled to appear as a soloist before his death last November. Stravinsky’s Pulcinella is a reaction to Italian composer Pergolesi, whose original music was for a commedia dell’arte libretto. Vocal soloists will be announced at a later date. At 409, Albany is one of America’s oldest cities. Nestled within a web of natural waterways, the Capital District offers year-round outdoor adventures from kayaking to boat tours to fat tire biking. Farmers markets and restaurants feature local produce and craft beverages. Not far from the riverfront stands an architectural jewel, the 1930s Palace Theatre, so elegant and so old-world in its features, one might expect it to house an old-world orchestra. It doesn’t.

The Albany Symphony is a hotbed for contemporary American music.

A one-time stop along the Chisholm Trail, Fort Worth, Texas, wears its Cowtown history with pride. “Cowboys & Culture” is the city’s tagline, which works in tandem with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra’s: “Life is Better with Music.”

Home to excellent museums, a prominent university, environmental activism, a diverse community, and a lively restaurant scene, Fort Worth is a bustling metropolis. And the FWSO is an essential part of the city’s cultural life.

“We’re always trawling for the best and most interesting new composers,” says Music Director David Alan Miller. Even local schools get a piece of this American dream: the Symphony pairs them with composer-educators who engage students in all sorts of composition activities, including the creation of works to be performed at the orchestra’s annual summertime fest, the American Music Festival. On deck for the 2018 Festival are 25 contemporary works, 18 by Americans.

Music of the Americas is a passion of Music Director Miguel Harth-Bedoya, as are creative collaborations with composers through residencies, commissions, and recording projects; and even a celebrity grilling competition known as Steak of the Arts. Dynamism is the key for this forward-thinking ensemble; classical masterpieces are mainstays—but they share space on the music stands with contemporary music, as well as popular favorites at the orchestra’s summer music festival, Concerts in the Garden at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden.

Indianapolis may be the first name in auto racing, but more recently this vibrant city has thrown its weight behind an entirely different mode of transportation: cycling. The Indianapolis Cultural Trail connects many of the city’s assets, from the zoo to museums, theaters, historic neighborhoods, nightlife, professional sports, and parks. Given the city’s love for cultural connectivity, it’s no surprise to see that same spirit flowing through its orchestra.

Washington may be trimmed with red, white, and blue, but it boasts a higher percentage of green space than nearly any other major U.S. city. With a terrific public transportation system, miles of shops, chic restaurants, worldfamous museums, and historic buildings dating back to the 18th century, D.C. is a fun town. And it’s got the orchestra to prove it. The NSO occupies a unique place in the American tapestry, at the intersection of music, diversity, and national pride.

Music Director Krzysztof Urban´ski is distinguishing this ensemble with a wondrous exploration of works from his native Poland. At the neighborhood level, the ISO is leveraging its talents to identify and address community goals, responding with programs for early childhood, seniors, and young musicians—including an intergenerational orchestra for at-risk youth and their families. On the lighter side, the ISO offers yoga classes with live music in its performance hall, and good times with cafe-style performances by the “classically trained garage band” Time for Three.

Based at the Kennedy Center, the NSO works with the world’s most accomplished artists in a variety of classical and genre-bending, not-soclassical concerts. With the NSO, blockbuster films such as Selma become live music events. A recent Great Performances broadcast brought the orchestra together with Hip Hop legend Nas. And that spirit enlivens all of its activities. “In a classical performance, we have to put across the same energy as rock stars,” says Music Director Gianandrea Noseda.

She’s just living in the movement STAGE Moments before actress Gabrielle Ruiz took the stage to perform songs from TV’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” live for the first time, she was hanging out backstage at SF Sketchfest with series co-stars Rachel Bloom and Vincent Rodriguez III. The January event — a live showcase for the subversive musical comedy’s co-creator Bloom — was running late as the line to get in wrapped around the Castro Theatre twice.

So, they went live on Instagram and started riffing and singing for fans who were already in the theater, still waiting in line or just hanging out at home. This led to an impromptu a cappella rendition of Ruiz’s character Valencia Perez’s Season 1 song “I’m So Good at Yoga” that went over so well, they ended up reprising it onstage that night. In some ways, that show was a test run for a full-fledged “Crazy ExGirlfriend” tour, which kicked off last week in Los Angeles.

“Whoever is coming to the show gets to watch us mess around and see what we do behind the scenes off camera,” Ruiz says. “The fact that the fans want to see us perform [these songs] is just so lovely. It’s an honor to do that.”

It’s not normal for a TV show to go on tour, but “Crazy ExGirlfriend” isn’t a normal TV show. The CW series, which was just renewed for a fourth and final season, has created more than 100 original songs — some parodies, some homage, all funny

— since its debut in 2015. (Bloom works out the show’s music with co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna, songwriter Jack Dolgen and Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne fame.)

For Ruiz, who plays the archnemesis-turned-BFF of Bloom’s Rebecca Bunch, the tour allows the actress to flex her Broadway bona fides, while also charting her character’s major changes over three seasons.

“I am very excited to sing ‘The Evolution of Valencia,’ as I’ve been calling it: from ‘Women Gotta Stick Together’ in Season 1 to ‘This Is My Movement’ in Season 3,” Ruiz says. “I love how different she is in both songs — that her passion and her drive are all the same; she just learned how to filter it correctly, for the better.”

Like Rebecca — who began the series by moving on a whim to West Covina, Calif., to try to reunite with a former boyfriend from summer camp (Rodriguez’s Josh Chan), then recognized that she was struggling with mental illness — Valencia has grown over the show’s run. First, she was Josh’s girlfriend (before Rebecca broke them up), then she and Rebecca became friends, and now she’s running her own party-planning business and dating a woman, a revelation that was made very matter-of-factly during a Season 3 montage.

“Valencia’s coming out was just another day,” Ruiz says.

“I feel very lucky that I could breathe life into this character that is so fascinating and has so many canyons of emotions.”

Because the cast changes with each tour date, the setlist and

the structure of the show also change.

“There will be a version of stand-up and improv occurring,” Ruiz says. “Not only will we do that onstage, we just did that in Rachel’s living room yesterday

rehearsing. We just can’t help ourselves.”

With her musical theater background, it was hard at first for Ruiz to accept that the show wouldn’t be as regimented as a Broadway production, but now she embraces the flexibility.

When asked which of the show’s three different theme songs they’ll be doing live, inspiration suddenly strikes.

“I don’t think that has been determined yet — still up for debate,” she says, before pausing: “Oh, my gosh, you just gave me a great idea. I’m gonna call Rachel right after this. See, I’m telling you — it’s changing, it changes every hour on the hour.”

The documentary “Lives Well Lived” features interviews with 40 people ranging in age from 75 to over 100 who have lived through basically every crappy thing the 20th century had to throw at them (the Great Depression, World War II, the internment of JapaneseAmericans, segregation) and still came out thinking the world is a pretty OK place. Damaged City 2018

Petalpalooza

It’s the sixth time around for Damaged City, D.C.’s annual festival devoted to hardcore punk.

This year’s lineup includes D.C.’s Guilt Parade, New York’s Warthog and bands from France and the U.K. Thursday’s “pre-show” festival kickoff serves as a record release party for Baltimore’s bombastic and increasingly popular Turnstile, recently featured on NPR and in The New York Times. Festival shows are held at venues across the city, including All Souls Church Unitarian, the Black Cat and Northeast art space Hole in the Sky.

One of the National Cherry Blossom Festival’s signature events has a new name — Petalpalooza, instead of the Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival — and location (The Wharf development), but it’s packed with just as many activities as it ever was. Kristen Bell loves ‘Pandas’ FILM Anyone who has seen Kristen Bell break down in (happy) hysterics over a sloth knows the actress’s affinity for animals, especially those of the cute and cuddly variety. So when the team behind the new Imax original film “Pandas” asked “The Good Place” star if she would consider narrating the documentary, it was a no-brainer.

“I take my kids to the science center every time there’s a new Imax movie,” Bell says. “I just think the patience with which they produce particularly their animal documentaries is kind of astounding.”

“Pandas” takes audiences to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China.

There, scientists are working toward a goal of releasing captiveborn pandas into the wild, where only about 2,000 pandas live.

The actress narrates a new Imax movie about the cuddly bears

“Pandas” follows Qian Qian from the time she’s a cub to her supervised release in the wild.

The film, opening locally Friday at the National Air and Space Museum, focuses on one panda, Bell Qian Qian (pronounced Chen Chen), from cub stage to her supervised release in the wild, and the humans trying to make that happen. They include Hou Rong, director of research at Panda Base since 1994, who has raised over 200 baby pandas during her tenure and hopes that one day their work will help pandas

thrive outside of captivity.

Bell, an avid watcher of nature documentaries, says that she and her young daughters Lincoln and Delta particularly love David Attenborough and the “Planet Earth” series. The girls saw an early cut of “Pandas” and “loved it,” Bell says.

“It makes you feel good,” she adds. “It’s inspiring, it’s beautiful, it’s adorable, it’s educational and personally, I think currently the world could use more things that feel good, you know?”
