‘ESPECIALLY AFTER DRINKING ALCOHOL’
When an entitled rich person battles fun-hating officials, does anyone win?
‘Put a chainsaw in your pants,’ they said. ‘What could ever go wrong,’ they said.
Seriously, though, how drunk would you need to be to emulate ‘Borat’ in 2019?
A battle between government rules and property rights is playing out in a San Francisco suburb, where a publishing mogul has installed an homage to “The Flintstones.” The bold, bulbous house is surrounded by sculptures inspired by the cartoon, among other oddities. The town of Hillsborough says Florence Fang’s property is a public nuisance. Officials filed a lawsuit last month to make her remove the installations. Fang’s attorney says snobby officials want to squelch her right to enjoy her yard, and promises a vigorous fight. (AP)
A California business owner says store surveillance video recorded a man stealing a small chainsaw by stuffing it down his pants. Jeff Bennett of RG Equipment tells The Fresno Bee his security camera caught the theft Wednesday afternoon. The video shows the man take the chainsaw from a display, stuff the blade down his pants and cover the engine assembly with his jacket. Bennett says the man drove off in a pickup truck. He believes an accomplice was watching the store last week. (AP)
Police in Poland say they’re investigating four tourists spotted last week in Krakow wearing only mankinis. The men were caught on CCTV and by an AP photographer Friday as they walked in the Renaissance Market Square and got into a horse cab. They wore ‘Borat’-esque lime-green mankinis. Police spokesman Sebastian Glen said Thursday police are investigating the “indecent antics.” Glen said foreign tourists, especially British ones, who come for stag parties sometimes cause disturbances, especially after drinking alcohol. Tides turn toward change Officials solicit ideas for a major makeover of the ailing Tidal Basin
Former Virginia lawmaker Joe Morrissey launched a bid for a Richmond-area state Senate seat Wednesday. Morrissey was jailed four years ago after a sex scandal involving a teenager, whom he later married. The couple now have three children. In 2016, he lost a campaign to be Richmond’s mayor. He now faces incumbent Sen. Rosalyn Dance in the Democratic primary. (AP)
Parts of the Tidal Basin and Jefferson Memorial flood twice daily at high tide.
J. LAWLER DUGGAN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
THE DISTRICT With the sun out and Washington’s cherry blossoms at peak bloom, visitors this week thronged the Tidal Basin, eating picnic lunches and taking selfies beneath some of the Mall’s 3,800 cherry trees. A few yards from the Jefferson Memorial, a pathway that rings the basin was under nearly a foot of water and parts of its concrete wall were crumbling — a reminder that the landmark is falling prey to increased foot traffic, the growth of the D.C. region and a changing climate. “In 2019, it’s not functioning the way we need it to,” said Teresa Durkin, the senior project director for the nonprofit Trust for the National Mall. “There is a certain amount of urgency.” Officials from the trust as well as the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Park Service launched an effort dubbed “Save the Tidal Basin” in a partnership that aims to bring nonprofit organizations and the federal government together to reimagine the area and develop improvement plans that they say could cost up to $500 million. Anyone not distracted by the blossoms could see possible targets for a makeover. Advocates say walkways around the 107-acre basin are too narrow for the 36 million annual visitors, forcing

them off the paths to tread on the roots of the trees whose beauty they come to celebrate. The trees are also being harmed by brackish water during floods. “We are in a continual cherry tree replacement mode around here,” said Sean Kennealy, the chief of the professional services division for the Park Service’s National Mall and Memorial Parks. Meanwhile, the entire basin, built on landfill in the Potomac River in the 19th century, is slowly sinking. Parts of the site are flooded twice daily at high tide, and water gets even closer to Thomas Jefferson after heavy storms — indications that the man-made reservoir cannot handle increased storm water
runoff from a rapidly urbanizing region and increases in sea level. “Climate change will be catastrophic,” Durkin said. “This whole area will be underwater.” To find solutions, officials started with a $750,000, threeyear brainstorming period sponsored by the American Express Foundation, a philanthropic arm of the financial company. This “ideas lab,” as officials have named it, calls for design firms to rethink the Tidal Basin and then present options to federal officials and the public. “There’s a price on simpler repairs, but we don’t want to do that,” said Catherine Townsend, the president and chief executive of the Trust for the National Mall. “We want the focus to be on
reimagining the space.” If the Tidal Basin is reinvented, it won’t be the first time. In the early 1900s, the area was home to floating baths and, eventually, a whites-only bathing beach. That beach was closed in 1925. The Jefferson memorial was then completed in 1943 for $3 million. Officials say it is too early to know what large sum is needed to protect the Tidal Basin and its cherry trees from rising waters and an onslaught of tourists, or who will pay it. But officials said the time for action — or, at least, thinking about action — is now. “We can’t wait 100 years,” Durkin said. “We want this place to be here in 100 years.” JUSTIN WM. A ‘degrading’ clash on Metro Gay man says he confronted a group of teens using homophobic slurs — and they retaliated METRO Ryan Kendall spends his days working to defend the civil rights of people behind bars. One day last month, he got on a train at McPherson Square during the afternoon rush hour, having spent the day reading the medical records of people in a Virgin Islands prison to see if they were getting proper health care. He was tired and just wanted to get home. But before the train had gone even three stops, he had his own civil rights violated, he says: He was threatened with violence and spat on because he’s gay.
“It was one of the most degrading experiences of my life,” Kendall said. He says he was standing on the train when he heard a group of teenagers repeatedly use homophobic slurs among themselves. Kendall says he doesn’t believe in letting slurs he hears pass. He told the group he was gay, and that what they were saying was harmful, and they should knock it off. He says the teenagers then threatened to beat him up and told him to get off the train, which was approaching his stop at Smithsonian anyway. As he

the left side of his face. A few days later, he was recounting the incident in a conference room at the American Civil Liberties Union, where he is a litigation fellow at the group’s National Prison Project. “It really shows what they thought of my worth as a person, as a gay person,” he said. “That I’m nothing and they could just treat me like dirt.” He was thinking about how the other passengers on the packed train did nothing. “I thought that at some point someone else would say something,” Kendall said. “But no one did. Everybody sat in their seats.” Kendall says he’s also been thinking about what he’d tell the teenagers who spat on him if he could talk to them. “I’d want to tell them my story, get them to see me as a human being and explain to them why it’s not OK what they were saying,” he said. Kendall grew up in a conservative community in Colorado. When he realized he was gay, he says, his parents sent him to what’s known as conversion therapy, a largely discredited practice to try to turn
gay people straight. “I went off the deep end,” he recalled. “I did a bunch of drugs, attempted to commit suicide, dropped out of high school. My life was basically a disaster.” He didn’t want to discuss in this interview what happened during those conversion therapy sessions, but he spoke to Vice News in 2014 about tactics the counselors used. “Most of it was fear and intimidation: Your family is going to reject you, this isn’t normal, you’re going to get AIDS and die before you’re 30,” he told Vice. “I’d been told I was going to die, was going to go to hell.” Kendall says he survived that attempt to change who he is — only to be spat on for being who he is. Despite urging on social media, Kendall didn’t file a police report against the teenager who spat on him. He says he knows how an arrest can send a young person’s life spiraling “into a slow-motion tragedy.” But he does have a wish: “I really hope as they get older that they’ll reflect on their behavior and one day are horrified by this.” KERY MURAKAMI (EXPRESS)

Faulty sensor data led to jet crash, report says Ethiopian government’s findings link the two Boeing Max 8 disasters
Study finds cats respond to their names
Rescuers work at the scene of an Ethiopian Airlines jet crash last month near Bishoftu, Ethiopia.
MULUGETA AYENE (AP)
TRANSPORTATION A doomed Ethiopian Airlines jet suffered from faulty readings by a key sensor, and pilots followed Boeing’s recommended procedures when the plane started to nose dive but could not avoid crashing, according to a preliminary report released Thursday by the Ethiopian government. The findings drew the strongest link yet between the March 10 crash in Ethiopia and an October crash off the coast of Indonesia, which both involved Boeing 737 Max 8 jetliners. All 346 people on the two planes were killed. Both planes had an automated system that pushed the nose down when sensors detected the danger of an aerodynamic stall, but it now appears that sensors malfunctioned on both planes. Thursday’s report, based on flight data and cockpit voice recorders on the Ethiopian Airlines jetliner, showed that a faulty sensor on the plane touched off a series of events that caused the pilots to lose control of the plane. The report from Ethiopia’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau said the sensor problems began about a minute after the plane was cleared for takeoff. It said air speed and altitude values on the left side of the 737 Max conflicted with data from

those reported on the Indonesian Lion Air flight that crashed last October. Investigators found that software on that plane took readings from the sensor and pointed the nose down. Thursday’s revelations raise questions about assertions by Boeing and U.S. regulators that pilots could regain control in some emergencies by following steps that include turning off an anti-stall system designed specifically for the Max, known by its acronym, MCAS. Investigators are looking into the role of MCAS, which under some circumstances can automatically lower the plane’s nose to prevent an aerodynamic stall. The Max has been grounded worldwide. Japanese scientists said they’ve provided the first experimental evidence that cats can distinguish their names from other words. In four studies with 16 to 34 cats, each feline heard a recording that recited a list of four nouns, followed by the cat’s name. According to results published Thursday in the journal Scientific Reports, most cats moved their heads, ears or tails when they heard their names. Kristyn Vitale, who studies cat behavior at Oregon State University but didn’t participate in the study, said results don’t mean cats assign a sense of self to their names. It’s more like being trained to recognize a sound, she said. (AP)

Police: Man isn’t boy who went missing in 2011 CINCINNATI Federal law enforcement authorities said that the person who was found on a street corner in Newport, Ky., this week is not Timmothy Pitzen, the child, missing since 2011, whom the person claimed to be. “DNA results have been returned indicating the person in question is not Timmothy Pitzen,” Timothy Beam, a special agent with the FBI in Louisville said in a statement. Police in Newport said the man was Brian Michael Rini, from Medina, Ohio. He is 23 years old, not 14, as Pitzen would be, Chief Thomas Collins told The Washington Post. Collins said Rini was in police custody as prosecutors weighed charges. Rini appears to have a criminal record. He was recently released from prison in Ohio after more than a year’s sentence stemming from convictions for burglary and vandalism, prison records show. The disclosures marked a stunning turn of events in a case that has drawn headlines across the country. The man told authorities his name was Timmothy Pitzen after being found by a stranger on the street early Wednesday morning. In May 2011, 6-year-old Timmothy was last seen leaving his school in Aurora, Ill., with his mother, Amy Fry-Pitzen. Three days later, she was found dead in a motel room from an apparent suicide. She left a note that said he was with others who would love and care for him. (TWP/AP)

Trump won’t immediately close border
Mormons allow baptisms of kids of LGBT parents
NATIONAL SECURITY President Trump on Thursday backed down from his threat to close the southern border immediately, telling reporters at the White House that he is giving Mexico a “one-year warning” before taking action. Trump had said he would close the border, or at least large sections of it, this week if Mexico does not halt illegal immigration into the United States. But in Thursday’s exchange with reporters, Trump shifted gears, saying that if Mexico does not make progress on stemming the flow of drugs and migrants into the U.S. within the next year, he will impose tariffs on cars and close the border. “We’re going to give them a one-year warning, and if the drugs don’t stop or largely stop, we’re going to put tariffs on
Mexico and products, particularly cars. … And if that doesn’t stop the drugs, we close the border,” Trump said. Trump’s remarks were a marked change from his message Wednesday, when he threatened to close the border unless Congress “immediately” addressed “loopholes” in U.S. immigration law. The apparent turnaround comes amid mounting warnings from advisers and business leaders that closing the 2,000-mile border with Mexico, the United States’ third-largest trading partner, could be economically devastating to both countries. Members of Trump’s own party had cautioned him as well. “Closing down the border would have a potentially catastrophic economic impact on our country, and I would hope

we would not be doing that,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Tuesday. Trump is scheduled to visit the U.S.-Mexico border on Friday. In an interview on “Fox & Friends” Thursday morning, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Trump was making the trip so that Americans will “get a chance to see some of the things
that are going on, on the ground and hear from the people dealing with this crisis day in and day out. “The president wants to show the progress that we’ve made on the border wall,” Sanders said. “But also, he wants to show a lot of people firsthand exactly what is taking place at the border.” FELICIA SONMEZ (THE WASHINGTON POST)

RELIGION The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Thursday repealed rules banning baptisms for children of gay parents and making gay marriage a sin eligible for expulsion — marking a reversal of policies condemned as jarring detours from a push by the faith to be more compassionate about LGBTQ issues. The 2015 rules that were approved by global church leaders had prohibited baptisms for children living with gay parents until the children turned 18 and disavowed same-sex relationships. With the change, children of gay parents can now be baptized as long as their parents approve the baptisms and acknowledge that the children will be taught church doctrine, the church said in a statement from its highest leadership group. The faith widely known as the Mormon church said in a statement that it is not changing its doctrinal opposition to gay marriage and still considers same-sex relationships to be a “serious transgression.” But people in same-sex relationships will no longer be considered “apostates” who can be kicked out of the religion, the statement said. That label given to same-sex couples in the 2015 policy was widely condemned by LGBQT members and allies as being demeaning and hurtful to people who already struggle to find acceptance in the faith. nation+world President likely to veto measure to withdraw U.S. support for Saudis FOREIGN POLICY Rejecting a plank of President Trump’s foreign policy, the House on Thursday invoked never-before-used powers to demand that his administration withdraw support from the Saudiled war in Yemen. The Senate passed the same resolution in March with bipartisan support. Trump is expected to issue a veto, his second as president, and Congress does not have the votes to override him. But the action was nonetheless a milestone for lawmakers, who have shown a renewed willingness to
assert their war-making powers after letting them atrophy for decades under presidents from both parties. Yemen was plunged into a civil war in September 2014, when rebels known as Houthis swept into the capital and overthrew the country’s internationally recognized government. The Saudi-led coalition began fighting the rebels months later in a campaign that Saudi Arabia said was aimed at curbing Iranian influence. At the time, the Houthis were allied with forces backed by Iran; in the years that followed, Iran’s role in the conflict has grown. The conflict has been a bloody stalemate for years. POLITICS Members of special counsel Robert Mueller’s team have told associates they are frustrated with the limited information Attorney General William Barr has provided about their investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether President Trump sought to obstruct justice, according to people familiar with the matter. The displeasure among some who worked on the closely held inquiry has quietly begun to surface since Barr released a four-page letter to Congress on March 24 describing what he said were the conclusions of Mueller’s still-confidential 400page report. Trump has said that the report exonerated him. Members of Mueller’s team have told close associates that the evidence they gathered on obstruction was alarming and significant. The New York Times first reported that some special counsel investigators feel that Barr did not adequately portray their findings. Mueller’s team assumed the report was going to be made available to the public, said one official briefed on the matter, “and so they prepared their summaries to be shared in their own words — and not in the attorney general’s summary of their work, as turned out to be the case.” ELLEN NAKASHIMA, CAROL D. The Purdue game, he came up really big for us with that clutch basket.” Key was referring to a layup in overtime that put Virginia ahead of the Boilermakers for good, 76-75, with 29 seconds left. That play had Bennett praising his most versatile player, especially considering the gaffe by Hunter one possession earlier. With a minute to play, Hunter drove to the rim only to have the ball bounce off his leg and out of bounds. Carsen Edwards then gave Purdue a one-point lead on a floater. That Hunter was able to put that miscue behind him to produce a decisive basket spoke volumes, Bennett said. “He made some difficult plays at difficult times,” Bennett said. “He’s guarded hard when his shot

He’s shooting 37.5 percent in that time, including going 4-for-10 in the South Region final during an 80-75 overtime win against No. 3 seed Purdue. Hunter also is shooting 27.8 percent on 3-pointers in the NCA A Tournament, down from 42.4 percent in the regular season. “I feel like I haven’t been playing that well,” Hunter said, “but it’s fine. He’s just been so versatile for us on offense and defense.” Hunter did not play in the NCAA Tournament last season because of a broken wrist. That, and the sting of Virginia’s firstround loss to Maryland Baltimore County, helped compel him to delay his NBA career for a shot at redemption. That opportunity continues Saturday night in Minneapolis. GENE WANG (THE WASHINGTON POST)
VETERANS RULE AT FINAL FOUR
One-and-dones are already done
Duke’s Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett are not at the Final Four. Neither is North Carolina’s Coby White or LSU’s Tremont Waters or the Kentucky kids. None of college basketball’s fantastic freshmen made it to the last weekend. “Everybody would like to have what Duke and Kentucky have as far as personnel,” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo, left said Thursday. “ ... If you don’t have the best talent, you’d better be very old and very experienced.” (AP) Washington Post report: UNC women’s players say basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell made racially offensive remarks, ignored injuries
This will come down to how the backcourts — Virginia’s Ty Jerome and Kyle Guy and Auburn’s Jared Harper, above, and Bryce Brown — control the tempo and take care of the ball. The Cavaliers averaged the second fewest turnovers (9.1 per game) in the country this season, while the Tigers forced the sixth most (17.5). Virginia wears down its opponents; Auburn wants to run.
(2) Michigan State vs. (3) Texas Tech 8:49 p.m. Saturday, CBS
This game will be won and lost in the paint. Both teams rank in the top three nationally in field-goal percentage defense and in the top 15 in blocked shots per game. Neither team relies heavily on making 3s, so rim-protectors Xavier Tillman of Michigan State and Tariq Owens, above, of Texas Tech will be tested throughout the evening. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

Strasburg, bullpen roll
BRANCHING OUT
Curry shoots for TV success with mini-golf
NATIONALS 4, METS 0 Stephen Strasburg outpitched Noah Syndergaard, rookie center fielder Victor Robles homered for Washington’s only hit until the ninth inning and the Nationals beat the Mets 4-0 to spoil New York’s home opener Thursday. Wilmer Difo, substituting for injured shortstop Trea Turner, drove in two runs, and Washington’s struggling bullpen shined after Strasburg (1-0) fanned nine in six-plus innings. Matched against Syndergaard for the second time in six days, Strasburg took a one-hitter into the seventh before giving up consecutive singles with two outs. Matt Grace, Justin Miller, Tony Sipp and Sean Doolittle completed the four-hitter, making Strasburg 8-1 with a 2.14 ERA in 11 starts at Citi Field. Before Thursday’s game, Washington relievers were last in the majors with an 11.02 ERA, and opponents were batting .377 against them. The only hit Syndergaard (0-1) allowed in six innings was Robles’ leadoff homer in the sixth. Syndergaard struck out six and walked two. The Mets were operating on limited sleep. Following a 5-1

trip to start the season, they got back to New York after 2 a.m. Friday in the wake of a 6-4 victory in Miami. The Nationals improved to 3-3. Before the game, they activated utility player Howie Kendrick, who had been on the injured list because of a strained left hamstring. Kendrick, 35, had been sidelined since rupturing his right Achilles tendon May 19 last year. The Nationals also had reserve first baseman Matt Adams
available; he pinch-hit in the ninth and grounded into a fielder’s choice. Adams left Tuesday’s game after taking a nasty fall over a railing while trying to catch a foul pop and wound up with back spasms. The Nationals are off today and return to action at 1:10 p.m. Saturday at Citi Field. Lefthander Patrick Corbin will make his second start. He allowed two runs over six innings in a no-decision Sunday against the Mets. (AP)
NBA star and avid golfer Stephen Curry is ready to fill a void in the TV schedule: His production company is bringing competitive mini-golf to ABC with a show called “Holey Moley.” As described by Variety, 12 contestants in each episode will compete on “supersized” putt-putt holes. Finalists will take on something called “Mt. Holey Moley,” with each episode’s winner collecting $25,000. Joe Tessitore of ESPN and comedian Rob Riggle will be the announcers. (TWP)
NBA Wizards owner Ted Leonsis
Possible candidates to be the Wizards’ next GM Wizards owner Ted Leonsis is expected to be deliberate in replacing longtime general manager Ernie Grunfeld. These executives are likely to be among those considered. (THE WASHINGTON POST) Tommy Sheppard
Tim Connelly
Danny Ferry
The interim GM and former top aide to Grunfeld is the only candidate Leonsis has mentioned publicly. Sheppard is respected for basketball savvy and building relationships at all levels of the organization and NBA, but his long association with Grunfeld could hurt his chances to lead a team seeking a fresh start.
The Nuggets’ president is a native of Baltimore whose family lives in the D.C. area. After building Denver toward its first playoff berth in six seasons, his stock as an executive is at an all-time high. He is seen as open-minded and ego-free. Denver ownership likes him and might let him go to lead his hometown team.
A DeMatha grad and longtime NBA pro, he transitioned to a front-office role with Cleveland in 2005 and then was instrumental in constructing a run of success for Atlanta. But his Hawks tenure ended in scandal when his racial comments about Luol Deng leaked to the media. Ferry now is the Pelicans’ interim GM.
UConn eager for revenge against Irish WOMEN’S FINAL FOUR UConn guard Megan Walker got a little excited Thursday when she was asked about the intensity of the rivalry with Notre Dame. “We never want to go down against Notre Dame,” she said, “and it’s because of what has come before us, the players, their battles, the chemistry between the two teams.” Some of those players Walker, above, referred to include UConn’s Sue Bird, who heaved a famous buzzer-beater in the 2001 Big East Tournament; and Skylar Diggins, who helped lift Notre Dame to a Final Four win in 2011 that ended Maya Moore’s collegiate career. There is rich history in the 50th iteration of Connecticut vs. Notre Dame, which will take place at 9 p.m. Friday in Tampa, Fla., after No. 1 seed Baylor and No. 2 seed Oregon play the first national semifinal at 7. Notre Dame beat Connecticut in overtime in last year’s national semifinals on a buzzer-beater by Arike Ogunbowale. It was the second year in a row the Huskies’ season ended with an overtime loss in the Final Four. “It’s like the worst situation that you can have,” Connecticut’s Napheesa Collier said. “Overtime, a last shot like that.” Said Katie Lou Samuelson, Collier’s fellow senior leader: “It makes us, probably more than anyone, understand that there’s only one thing guaranteed at a time.” AVA WALLACE (TWP)
Women’s basketball honors by AP: Iowa center Megan Gustafson (nation-leading 27.9 ppg) is player of the year; Kim Mulkey of Baylor (35-1 entering Final Four) is coach of the year

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST
14 going on 30: ‘Shazam!’ gets the duality of teens You’d think the last person you’d want to give superpowers to would be a teenager. Sure, it worked out OK for Peter Parker, but it wasn’t like the spider knew Parker was venomworthy. But DC’s “Shazam!” is about a 14-year-old kid who gets CHOSEN to have powers — which, to anyone who’s ever known a 14-year-old boy, is clearly a mistake. Yet to anyone who’s ever known a 14-year-oldboy, it also makes perfect sense. They’re basically wearing disguises all the time anyway. In the Philly-set “Shazam!,” 14-year-old Billy Batson (Asher Angel) continually runs from foster homes in a so-far unsuccessful attempt to locate his mom. After his latest escape,
he ends up in a home with an extended foster family and rooming with the superheroobsessed Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer). At school the next day, Freddy is on the receiving end of some bullying. Billy reluctantly comes to his aid, beats up the bullies and heads for the subway. Suddenly, the car hurtles out of control and arrives in an underground lair inhabited by a wizard (Djimon Hounsou) looking for someone “pure of heart and strong of spirit” to take on his mantle. Billy somewhat confusedly accepts, and now can turn into a fully grown, spandex-clad superhero simply by saying “Shazam.” As the adult Billy (aka Shazam), Zachary Levi is goofily endearing in a Tom Hanks-in-“Big” kind of way, especially when he dons his
Andre Holland to star in Damien Chazelle’s Netflix series “The Eddy”
“I’m a 14-year-old boy and this is what I think a superhero’s face looks like” face. He and Freddy gambol about town doing what 14-year-old boys would do if one of them suddenly looked like Zachary Levi on a low-carb, lift-heavy diet and exercise plan — they buy beer, blow stuff up and have a training montage that’s the best cinematic use of a Queen song since “Wayne’s World.” [Sideeyes “Bohemian Rhapsody.”] Then a bad guy shows up and Billy’s foray into the fun world of YouTube stardom takes a pretty hard turn into the world of grown-up responsibility. That’s what happens with teenagers; they get tools of massive power — phones, Instagram, super-speed, whatever — often before they have the emotional capacity to wield them. “Shazam!” isn’t about two
‘Shazam!’ (PG-13, 132 min.) DIRECTOR: David F. Sandberg STARS: Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer IN A NUTSHELL: A foster kid is given the power to transform into an adult superhero. It’s all fun and games until the evil supervillain shows up.
characters, Billy and Shazam. It’s about one: a person who sometimes looks like a man but always feels like a teenager. People who see Billy only as an eye-rolling teen or a lonely foster kid miss out on his strength; people who see Shazam only as a proteinpacked punch machine miss out on his vulnerability. I love teenagers for their Shazam-ness; they can appear so scary, and then turn out to be so sweet. The best way to look at a teenager is to see them as they are: an adolescent in a superhero costume they aren’t quite sure how they obtained. After Billy becomes Shazam, he has a host of new gifts he can give that go far beyond buying beer. But he also has a host of new needs. He needs teaching and encouragement; he also needs to be told to pull his head out of his leotard once in a while. He seems powerful — and he is — but to ignore the goofy but frightened, funny but hurting kid underneath the cape is to see only half of the story. Francis Ford Coppola set to direct film “Megalopolis”
“The Public,” starring Alec Baldwin, Christian Slater, Jena Malone, Jeffrey Wright and writer-director Emilio Estevez, is about the takeover of a Cincinnati public library by a group of street people, on the coldest night of the year. It’s a story stuffed with too many issues for a single movie, including addiction, poverty, race, the environment, the death of literacy and the political machine. ‘Diane’ Unrated, 96 min.
Respected documentary filmmaker Kent Jones makes a promising feature debut with “Diane,” which follows a widow and mother who is in near-constant motion helping others. Shot with stealth and delicacy, the film is a portrait of service and self-sacrifice by way of a quietly astonishing title performance by the downto-earth Mary Kay Place. ANN HORNADAY (TWP)

Reaching an understanding FILM In 2016’s “Hidden Figures,” Taraji P. Henson played NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson — a real woman whose story had gone untold a little too long. In “The Best of Enemies,” she plays Ann Atwater, an anti-racism activist who died in 2016. Henson wasn’t necessarily looking for another real-life figure to play, and she wouldn’t do it without a certain kind of permission. Luckily, for both “Hidden Figures” and “The Best of Enemies,” she got it from the women themselves. “They came to me. They wanted me to play them,” Henson says. “I feel the pressure of getting it right, but when [the women] or the families say, ‘I want you to do it,’ that relieves some of the pressure.” “The Best of Enemies” takes place in 1971 in Durham, N.C. While the schools are legally integrated, there’s a de facto segregation that keeps the white students in well-funded schools while the black students attend class in crumbling buildings and use castoff textbooks. Atwater is leading the charge to integrate the schools. Opposing her is the bulk of white society, most visibly led by C.P. Ellis (Sam Rockwell), a leader in the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. Rather than take the question of integration to court, the community agrees to a procedure

Taraji P. Henson and Robin Bissell seek truth with ‘Best of Enemies’

called a charrette, which is basically a summit in which all sides talk and (ideally) come to a compromise. Bissell A nna and C.P. work closely together, whether they like it or not, whether they like each other or not, and whether they’re likable or not. Of course, it’s easy to see why C.P. wouldn’t be likable, being a member of the Klan and all. Ann, though, isn’t perfect — she has a flashing temper, a bulldozer-like obstinacy and terrible table manners. But Henson says she was never tempted to tone down Ann. “I couldn’t, because she has a
‘The Best of Enemies’ (PG-13, 133 min.) DIRECTOR: Robin Bissell STARS: Taraji P. Henson, Sam Rockwell, Wes Bentley, Anne Heche IN A NUTSHELL: In 1971 North Carolina, an anti-racism activist and a Ku Klux Klan leader sit down to negotiate terms of desegregation.
family that loves and respects her and knew this woman, so I had to play her truth,” she says. “I would not have been servicing the audience that so loved her, or the audience that didn’t know her yet.” “What I love about Ann is that
was she was flawed,” says Robin Bissell, the film’s writer-director. “If you make somebody too perfect, there’s nowhere to go.” After “Green Book” took home the best picture Oscar earlier this year, there was discussion about whether white men should have written and directed a film based on a relatively fraught true story about a white person and a black person finding common ground in a deeply racist setting. Though Bissell, who is white, had optioned the rights to the story all the way back in 2008, “The Best of Enemies” is a relatively fraught true story about a white person and a black person finding common ground in a deeply racist setting. Was this a story he should be telling? “It didn’t make me nervous, because I work with white directors all the time,” deadpans Henson. Bissell didn’t think his race mattered early on. That changed. “When I dived into the story, I said, ‘Oh, yeah, I have to have a much greater understanding of this, because I don’t understand,’ ” Bissell says. For Henson, that shift in understanding made Bissell stand out from other directors. “[Bissell] always said, ‘I’m a white man. I don’t know what it is to be black, to know the struggles.’ But he took it within his heart to try and understand,” she says. “This is a man who’s privileged, and he’s using his privilege to help tell a story of the underprivileged. I don’t care what color the messenger is just as long as I get the message.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

John Cho saddles up for ‘Cowboy Bebop’
John Cho will star in Netflix’s live-action series take on the anime hit “Cowboy Bebop,” the streamer announced Thursday. The “Star Trek” actor will be joined by Mustafa Shakir (“Luke Cage”), Daniella Pineda (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Alex Hassell (“Suburbicon”). The genre-bending show follows a “ragtag crew of bounty hunters [who] hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals,” Netflix said. ‘Pet Sematary’ dogged by its reanimated plot FILM REVIEW Hollywood, in its infinite irony, has resurrected a tale about the unholy perils of resurrection. The mean roads and mangy cats of “Pet Sematary” are back from the dead in Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer’s vividly acted, blandly condensed remake of the 1989 movie, adapted from Sephen King’s 1983 novel. Working from a script by Jeff Buhler, the directors make quick work of the first act. Within minutes, the Creed family — father Louis (Jason Clarke), mother Rachel (Amy Seimetz), 8-year-old Ellie (Jete Laurence) and toddler Gage — is driving up to its new colonial home in Ludlow, Maine. After the family’s pet cat, Church, is found dead roadside, their neighbor Jud Crandall (John Lithgow) leads Louis deep into the woods to an ancient burial place. The next day, to Louis’ surprise, Church is back — but the feline has picked up a slightly different demeanor. It’s not deviations from King’s novel that hamper “Pet Sematary.” It’s that, from early on, Kolsch and Widmyer, rely less on the detailed accumulation of atmosphere that King built his tale on than jump cuts and music cues to build suspense. It puts King’s story on a more familiar genre track. By the film’s final scenes, “Pet Sematary” has been reduced, subtly but substantially, into a more standard-issue zombie movie. JAKE COYLE (AP)

‘The Dead Don’t Die’
EXPECTED RELEASE: Oct. 4
EXPECTED RELEASE: June 14
SUMMARY: We certainly don’t NEED another movie about the Joker (this time Joaquin Phoenix plays the Clown Prince of Crime), but this one looks pretty good. Possibly really good. Good enough to the point that it’s almost as unnerving as the creepy way Phoenix’s grin gets wider and more menacing as the trailer goes on. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)
SUMMARY: Trust indie darling Jim Jarmusch to manage to put together a zombie movie cast that includes no fewer than six Oscar nominees and one winner. That one winner is Tilda Swinton, who here plays a Scottish mortuary makeup artist who wields a samurai sword. Please let this character get her own spinoff. Please. K.P.K.

@CRISSLES, speculating about the singer’s possible actions after an
unknown person leaked a framed photo of her and JAY-Z’s three children. Both Hollywood Unlocked and Freeish Media posted the photo to Instagram, but took it down at the request of Beyonce’s management. Her fans are up in arms over the pic for two reasons: First, the star is notoriously private, rarely showing photos of her kids. Second, the photo’s origin is still unclear, though the frame has fans thinking it was taken in someone’s home.

Black Car and Silver Car, a parking debacle captured by Twitter user @Mrhflrs. The tension started when Black Car was stopped from backing into a parallel spot by Silver Car in L.A.’s Koreatown neighborhood. @Mrhflrs filmed the ensuing standoff, in which both cars refused to move. It ended 90 minutes later, when the car in front of Black Car left, allowing both cars to park.

@MRAHSSIAH, reacting to the announcement that the movie adaptation of the musical would render its stars — including, from left, Jennifer Hudson, Idris Elba and Taylor Swift — in motion capture as digital felines the size of real cats. Fans expected the stars to be in animal-print leotards and cat makeup, as became the norm in the musical’s Broadway performances. “Cats” will be released Dec. 20.
“$500 for ONE ticket to ’Endgame???!’” @JROSESSS, tweeting about people
trying to sell tickets to the release of the highly anticipated fourth “Avengers” movie for hundreds or even thousands of dollars on eBay. The bids come just a few days after presales for the tickets crashed cinema websites around the world. The current highest asking price appears to be $25,000 for two tickets in Reno, Nev.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
