Isn’t every pizza deliverer saving lives, really, if you think about it?
‘Ha ha. That’s funny, Dad. ... Dad. Please step away from my fiance.’
‘We know why you came to Sonic; we’d just like a little bit of respect’
A pizza deliveryman in Kentucky saved two lives when he spotted a house fire and acted quickly. Donatos Pizza driver Ralph Letner told WDRB-TV that he was delivering a pizza in Somerset when he saw a house in flames. Letner jumped out of his car and raced into the home, where he shut off the breaker and helped two people inside escape. The home’s owner, Jesse Decker, said Letner is a hero who saved his home and his life. (AP)
A Nevada woman got a bonus surprise with her fiance’s proposal — her dad holding up a sign that read, “SAY NO, Inside Edition reported Wednesday. Allison Barron of Winnemucca was driving with her fiance, Levi Bliss, who had asked Barron’s family to set up letters reading “Marry Me? on a nearby hill. As soon as Barron spotted the sign, her dad, Jake, popped out of the bushes with his counter-sign. Barron said yes anyway. (EXPRESS)
A Sonic fast-food restaurant in Gulfport, Miss., had to resort to posting a sign to ask stoners to stop lighting up in the drive-thru, the Sun-Herald reported last week. Store manager Yasman Freeman said the sign went up a few weeks ago after a customer blew smoke in the face of an underage employee. Sadly, media scrutiny grew too great, and the sign was removed by this Thursday, the Sun-Herald wrote. (EXPRESS)

THE DISTRICT A former NASA chief scientist and a leader in the effort to send humans to Mars will make history as the first woman to lead the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. Ellen Stofan will become the John and Adrienne Mars Director of NASM starting April 30, the museum announced Thursday. She succeeds Gen. J.R. “Jack” Dailey, who retired in January after 18 years at the helm of one of the world’s most popular museums. After 25 years working in space-related organizations, Stofan said she is eager to shape the way the museum educates and engages the public about aviation and space. “One of my biggest passions is outreach and communication about science and technology,” Stofan, 57, said. “What better place than the Air and Space Museum to engage everyone in the excitement of aviation and exploration?” Being the first woman in the post is an added honor because the science and tech fields are lacking in women and people of color, she said. “It’s important to have women

in leadership positions not just for their different perspectives and skill sets, but for the inspiration. I’m looking at the 8-yearold girl who may see herself [in me],” she said. “So many jobs of the future are tied to technology. It’s not just important, it’s a necessity” to attract women to the field, she added. Stofan caught the science bug at an early age. Her father was a NASA scientist and her mother taught elementary school science. She witnessed her first
rocket launch at Cape Canaveral at the age of 4 and was a regular at the Air and Space Museum in the late 1970s, just after it opened. While an undergraduate at the College of William & Mary, she spent a summer at the museum as an intern, she said. Stofan earned master’s and doctoral degrees in geological sciences from Brown University. She worked at the Jet Propulsion Lab and later was vice president at Proxemy Research. Voting mailers prompt confusion for 140,000 VIRGINIA A Democratic-leaning group working to get more unmarried women, people of color and millennials to the polls in November has sewn confusion in Virginia through mailers to voters that imply they’re not registered, election officials said Thursday. The Washington-based Voter Participation Center, a nonprofit that operates in 23 states, mailed 140,000 voter registration forms in Virginia with a message telling recipients they “do not appear to be currently registered to vote.”
The same group sent the same kind of confusing mailers in Virginia in the weeks before the 2016 presidential election. The mailers were part of a national push to get what the group sees as “the rising American electorate” to cast ballots in the midterm elections. Mailers were sent to about 2.3 million homes, the group said. In Virginia, the mailers prompted confused voters to contact state and local election officials with worries that either they’d been knocked off voter

The quiet cacophony began just after 10 a.m. Thursday. Phones, possibly millions of them across 20 D.C.-area jurisdictions, beeped and buzzed in response to an emergency alert test issued by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. The test was the first of its kind in the D.C. area. As it happens, there were hiccups. Some people reported receiving multiple alerts multiple times, while others said their phones didn’t make a peep. Every jurisdiction was supposed to “push the button” at 10 a.m., said Sulayman Brown, Fairfax County’s assistant coordinator of the Office of Emergency Management and project manager for the exercise, but some experienced a “technical issue” and did not get their alert out until nearly a half-hour later. Pat Regan, a lawyer for Brekelmans’ family, said the windows in the units were painted shut and the two couldn’t escape. He called the third floor “a death trap.” (TWP)

Alwin Chen, 18, an honor student at Clarksburg High School, told police he wanted to be able to guard against a mass shooter. The agreement is not final until approved by a judge, who has set a hearing April 24. If convicted under the agreement, he would face a maximum of three years in prison. (TWP) VIRGINIA
New Chinese tariffs could trouble state’s farmers Virginia’s farmers would be significantly affected if China follows through on new tariffs for U.S. imports. Elaine Lidholm, a spokeswoman for Virginia’s agriculture department, said Wednesday that China is the state’s largest export market for agricultural goods. Lidholm said new tariffs could particularly jeopardize export businesses for Virginia soybeans, pork, apples and wine. China on Wednesday announced new tariffs on more than 100 goods in response to President Trump’s plans for new tariffs on Chinese goods. (AP)

Md. Dems overturn two Hogan vetoes Legislation dealt with school construction, teacher punishment MARYLAND The Maryland General Assembly voted Thursday to override two vetoes from Republican Gov. Larry Hogan, restoring two measures that will decide when and how schools are built and how educators are disciplined. One bill would strip the threemember Board of Public Works of its authority to approve school construction projects and replace it with an appointed board. The bill’s proponents say it is an effort to remove politics from the process of awarding funds for school construction, while its critics say it is a political attack on state Comptroller Peter Franchot, D, a Hogan ally who has clashed with leaders in both chambers. Hogan had vetoed the bill on Wednesday, calling it one of the General Assembly’s “most outrageous and irresponsible actions.” But lawmakers said Thursday that Franchot and Hogan bear responsibility for politicizing the process. “My green vote to override this veto is to reorient our conversation away from theater and back to the schools, to make sure our decisions are made on the merits of our projects, and the needs of

our school systems,” Maryland House Majority Leader C. William Frick, D-Montgomery, said on the floor. Lawmakers also overturned a veto of a bill that would change the procedure for suspending or dismissing educators by giving an arbitrator the final say, instead of the local school board. Sen. Paul Pinsky, D-Prince George’s, who supports the bill, said the legislation ensures due process. But Sen. Robert Cassilly, R-Harford, said the measure “undermines the quality of education.” Hogan called the bill a “radical attempt to strip away the duly authorized powers of local school boards.” OVETTA WIGGINS AND RACHEL CHASON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Female medics ordered out of sumo ring
Trump goes off script on trip to West Virginia President Trump was in West Virginia on Thursday to promote Republican tax cuts, but he didn’t stick to his script — at one point even tossing his “boring” prepared remarks into the air. Here’s what he said during the roundtable discussion and after the event on Air Force One. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)
Stormy Daniels
Trump said he didn’t know about the $130,000 payment his personal attorney made to adultfilm actress Stormy Daniels, who alleges she and the president had an affair. Asked by reporters whether he knew about the payment, Trump responded, “No.” Trump also said he didn’t know why his longtime lawyer, Michael Cohen, had made the payment or where he got the money. “You’ll have to ask Michael Cohen,” he said.
Border security
Trump said that he wants to send 2,000 and 4,000 National Guard members to the U.S.-Mexico border to help federal officials fight illegal immigration and drug trafficking. The comments were his first estimate on guard levels he believes are needed for border protection. Trump also said his administration is looking into the cost of sending the troops to the border and added “we’ll probably keep them or a large portion of them until the wall is built.”
A rape epidemic?
Trump accused migrants he says are headed to the U.S. in a so-called migrant “caravan” of epidemic rape. “They’re not putting their good ones,” Trump said. “And yesterday it came out where, this journey coming up, women are raped at levels that nobody has ever seen before.” It’s not clear what Trump means by “yesterday it came out.” There don’t appear to be any mainstream news reports of a rape epidemic taking place in the caravan.
The head of Japan’s sumo association has apologized over an incident in which female first responders were asked to leave the ring as they attempted to revive an official. In sumo’s tradition, the ring is considered sacred and women are prohibited from entering. That posed a problem Wednesday, when Maizuru city mayor Ryozo Tatami collapsed during a ring-top speech. When two female medical experts rushed in to do first aid, a referee urged them to leave. “It was an inappropriate response in a life-threatening situation,” Sumo chief Nobuyoshi Hakkaku later said. (AP)
Voter fraud
Trump repeated his unsubstantiated claim that there had been widespread voter fraud in the 2016 election. “In many places, like California, the same person votes many times,” Trump said. “They always like to say, ‘Oh, that’s a conspiracy theory.’ Not a conspiracy theory, folks. Millions and millions of people.” Trump initially claimed last year that voting fraud had occurred in what appeared to be a means of explaining his popular-vote defeat.
ANTARCTIC AGRICULTURE

Scientists in Antarctica have harvested their first crop of vegetables grown without earth, daylight or pesticides as part of a project to help astronauts cultivate food on other planets. Researchers at Germany’s Neumayer Station III say they’ve picked 8 pounds of salad greens, 18 cucumbers and 70 radishes grown inside a greenhouse as temperatures outside dropped below -4° Fahrenheit. By May, scientists hope to harvest 9 to 11 pounds of fruit and vegetables a week. (AP)

Trump backs EPA’s Pruitt amid questions POLITICS White House officials sounded increasingly doubtful Thursday about the future of embattled Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt, even as President Trump appeared to throw him a public lifeline. Speaking Thursday to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump used a series of superlatives to describe Pruitt. “I think he’s done a fantastic job,” the president said. “I think he’s done an incredible job. ...It hasn’t been easy, but I think he’s done a fantastic job.” That contrasted with more tepid remarks earlier from White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley. “They say we all serve at the pleasure of the president,” Gidley told reporters. “The president himself said he had confidence [in Pruitt], and so that’s where we stand today.” Pruitt has been under fire for days amid numerous ethics questions, including about his rental of a bargain-priced Capitol Hill condo with ties to a fossil fuels lobbyist. If Trump were to fire him, he would be the fourth agency head ousted in the Trump administration’s first 15 months. A review of Pruitt’s ethical conduct by White House officials is underway, adding to other probes already being conducted by congressional oversight committees and EPA’s inspector general into outsized spending on luxury air travel and unusual security precautions. nation+world Surgeon general: More people should carry the overdose antidote HEALTH The nation’s chief doctor wants more Americans to start carrying the overdose antidote naloxone to help combat the nation’s opioid crisis and save lives. At the National Rx Drug Abuse & Heroin Summit in Atlanta on Thursday morning, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams gave his office’s first national public health advisory in 13 years. Adams said he hopes those who are at risk — as well as their friends and family — will keep the antidote on hand and learn how to use it.

“You don’t have to be a policeman or a firefighter or a paramedic to save a life,” Adams said. According to federal data, more than 42,000 Americans suffered fatal opioid overdoses in 2016, more than double the number who died in 2010. Naloxone can restore a person’s breathing after it is injected or sprayed in the nostrils. The drug, often referred to by the brand name Narcan, is available without a prescription in most states and is regularly used by first responders across the country. Adams said 95 percent of all insured Americans are covered to purchase naloxone. For the uninsured, Narcan can cost around $80 per dose, but the antidote

Proponents argue that greater access to naloxone doesn’t draw people to illegal drug use or foster an addiction. Adams said naloxone will not single-handedly solve the opioid crisis and should instead be used “in conjunction with expanded access to evidence-based treatment.” R.J. RICO (AP)

Will Barr cross the line? Reboot of ‘Roseanne’ has amplified the voice of a star with a history of controversial tweets
Why more dogs tend to die on United Airlines
ABC
CULTURE ABC executives knew exactly what they were getting into when they hired Roseanne Barr. The original run of ABC’s “Roseanne” in the 1990s made headlines for being a toxic work environment: Barr herself threatened to quit, and one producer announced his exit by saying he was fleeing for “the relative peace and quiet of Beirut.” But in the wake of Donald Trump’s unexpected victory in 2016, ABC decided it needed a show that would appeal to Middle America. So, tapping into TV’s current nostalgia obsession, it went with a reboot of “Roseanne,” in which Barr plays a Trump supporter — as she is in real life — and clashes with her family over their respective political views. The ratings for the premiere were jaw-dropping — a whopping 18 million viewers tuned in, and that number was about 25 million with DVR-delayed viewing. ABC immediately renewed the show for a second season last Friday. Then, mere hours later, Barr sent social media into a frenzy when she tweeted that Trump has “freed so many children held in bondage to pimps all over the world” — a debunked claim that has been circulating on far-right sites. Barr eventually deleted the tweet, but it was a stark reminder that the network had indefinitely tethered itself to an extremely controversial figure — and, as a result of the show’s success, given her a very powerful megaphone. “If this had happened five years ago, people may have laughed it off. But people are not laughing about this anymore,” said Bonnie Fuller, president and editor in

chief of the entertainment website Hollywood Life. “There have been too many consequences from fake news and conspiracy theories.” It wasn’t the first time Barr’s tweets recently landed her in hot water. On the day of the “Roseanne” premiere, she accused teenage school shooting survivor David Hogg of giving a Nazi salute. “Argh. Hit show on ABC. We have reached peak normalization,” model Chrissy Teigen tweeted with an image of the tweet, echoing many criticisms. Barr later retracted the claim and said she was misled by a doctored photo. At the Television Critics’ Association Press tour last summer, a reporter posed this scenario to ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey, as Barr was already known for tweeting fringe conspiracy theories: “Is there somebody whose job it is to monitor her Twitter feed in absolute terror in case she says
Stars behaving badly History shows viewers don’t necessarily care about stars’ off-camera behavior. In early 2011, CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler dismissed concerns about “Two and a Half Men” lead Charlie Sheen, who was in the news for trashing a hotel room and reportedly locking a prostitute in the closet. The year before, he was arrested after a domestic dispute with his ex-wife and pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge. “On a personal level, we are concerned, but he has his job, he does it well, and the show is a hit,” Tassler told reporters in 2011. something that’s going to make this new show untenable?” When Dungey replied that Barr planned to turn the keys to her Twitter account over to her son, the reporter pressed: “No matter who is actually doing her Twitter feed … there’s some wacky

conspiracy stuff that either she or her son has tweeted, and it’s not like this is a new thing. I’m just wondering if that concerns you.” “I try to just worry about the things that I can control,” Dungey said. Preston Beckman, a veteran broadcast executive and media consultant, said that although ABC doesn’t have to make any excuses for Barr’s behavior, “there’s always a line you don’t want to cross.” “Once you cross that line, there are consequences,” he said. “But I think to her fans and her kind of going against the grain and not acting like a typical TV star is the reason why she’s popular with them. There’s a lot of similarities between her and our current president.” No matter the backlash to Barr in real life, it’s giving the network what it would want for any new show: attention. When a 10-month-old French bulldog died on a United Airlines flight after his carrier was placed in an overhead bin at the direction of a flight attendant, animal advocates glommed on to a shocking piece of data: Of the 506,994 animals that flew on U.S. commercial carriers last year, 24 died in transit. And 18 of those deaths — 75 percent — occurred on United Airlines. However, the raw numbers of recent pet deaths might be more complicated than they appear at first. United carries more animals than any other U.S. airline, and it does handle a disproportionate number of the animals who die on planes. The airline says the disparity results from one simple variable: United accepts higher-risk dog breeds that other major U.S. carriers do not allow. “Snub-nosed” breeds such as bulldogs, boxers and pugs have a compact airway that can lead to in-flight breathing problems. Between 2015 and 2017, the Department of Transportation recorded the deaths of 85 animals while in the care of a U.S. air carrier, of which 41 occurred on United. Nearly 40 percent of those deaths occurred in dogs identified as a higher-risk breed. So, why not ban those breeds altogether? That’s something that United may consider. The airline is now conducting a top-tobottom assessment of its animal cargo practices. MARTINE POWERS

Man shot by NYPD was ill, father says Officers opened fire on man holding a pipe that resembled a gun NEW YORK CITY The father of a man killed by police officers in Brooklyn said his son was bipolar and wasn’t taking his medication, but was not dangerous and didn’t deserve to die. Saheed Vassell, 34, was fatally shot Wednesday night in Brooklyn by police officers responding to multiple 911 calls about a man threatening people with a gun. The officers who rushed to the scene encountered Vassell holding a metal object in his hand. In security camera images released by the police, the L-shaped length of pipe looked remarkably like a firearm. Vassell brandished it like a weapon, too, extending his arm and pointing the shortbarreled object at several people. When Vassell pointed the object at the officers in what officials described as a “two-handed shooting stance,” four opened fire, shooting a combined 10 times. Vassell’s father, Eric, told reporters after the shooting that his son had been hospitalized several times for psychiatric problems, some involving encounters with the police, but was polite and kind. “Police had a choice. They always have a choice. They should not train them to kill. They should

train them to protect life, to save life,” Eric Vassell said in an interview with WABC-TV. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a news conference Thursday that the incident was “a tragedy by any measure.” He said Vassell had “a profound mental health problem.” But he didn’t lay blame on the officers. “People in the community thought he had a weapon and was aiming at residents,” he said. He and police officials said officers had to make a quick decision and were unaware of Vassell’s history of mental illness. New York’s attorney general, Eric Schneiderman, announced Thursday that he would investigate the shooting. TOM HAYS (AP)

Poisoned spy’s daughter says she’s improving LONDON In her first public comment since she and her father, a former Russian spy, were poisoned by a nerve agent, Yulia Skripal, 33, said Thursday from a hospital that she’s recovering quickly, but the whole ordeal has been “somewhat disorientating.” Britain has blamed Russia for the March 4 poisoning of Yulia and Sergei Skripal in the city of Salisbury, and more than two dozen Western allies have expelled over 150 Russian diplomats in a show of solidarity. Moscow has fiercely denied the accusations and kicked out an equal number of envoys. Yulia Skripal said in a statement released by British police that her “strength is growing daily.” The hospital treating the Skripals confirmed that Yulia’s health has improved, while her 66-year-old father is still in critical condition. Russian state Rossiya TV on Thursday released a recording of a purported phone call between Yulia Skripal and her cousin in Russia, although the broadcaster said it could not verify its authenticity. In the call, Yulia Skripal allegedly says she and her father are both recovering and in normal health, and that her father’s health has not been irreparably damaged. At a news conference Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov insisted the poisoning case was fabricated by Britain to “demonize” Russia. DANICA KIRKA AND VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV (AP)

NEW DEAL FOR GM
Opening day downer METS 8, NATIONALS 2 A few hours after Washington announced it had re-signed team president and general manager Mike Rizzo to a two-year deal, Nationals Park filled up with fans excited to watch the championship-contending club play its first home game of the season. Good vibes reverberated. Smiles were everywhere. By the end of Thursday afternoon, after Stephen Strasburg labored, Adam Eaton exited early, Trea Turner was ejected and Brandon Kintzler gave up a grand slam in an 8-2 loss to the Mets, the ballpark fell quiet. Following two losses in Atlanta, the Nationals (4-3) were humbled by a supposedly inferior NL East rival for a third straight day. A chilly game began well for Washington. Strasburg annihilated the top of the Mets’ lineup, retiring the side in 11 pitches. He struck out Michael Conforto on three fastballs and got Yoenis

Cespedes swinging at a changeup. The rest of Strasburg’s day was strenuous. Working with a onerun lead in the second after Eaton scored on a fielding error, Strasburg watched Jay Bruce whack a first-pitch double. Two batters later, he issued a four-pitch walk to Kevin Plawecki. Then he was called for a balk — his first since 2013 — and Bruce scored.
Eaton scored again when Anthony Rendon doubled off Jacob deGrom in the third. Racing to the plate after an aggressive wave from third base, he bellyflopped home and later left the game after the awkward slide. X-rays on his ankle were negative, and manager Dave Martinez said that a stint on the disabled list shouldn’t be necessary.
The one-run edge was fleeting. In the fourth inning, Cespedes golfed a 95 mph fastball for a solo home run. An inning later, Conforto, making his season debut, cracked a fastball the other way for a two-run shot that gave the Mets a 4-2 lead. Strasburg grinded out six innings, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks. The Nationals wasted their best opportunity in the sixth, when they loaded the bases with no outs. Ryan Zimmerman popped up, Howie Kendrick lined out and Turner struck out for the third time in three at-bats before being ejected for arguing with the ump. Summoned from the bullpen to keep the deficit at two, Kintzler allowed a double to pinch-hitter Brandon Nimmo. He loaded the bases with walks to Conforto and Cespedes. That set the stage for a towering grand slam from Bruce, who sent a promising day for the Nats to a sour ending.

Rizzo gets 2-year deal from Nats Nationals President of Baseball Operations Mike Rizzo will continue to lead the franchise for at least two more seasons after 2018. In a move that followed a spring of internal unrest, the team signed Rizzo to a two-year extension Wednesday night. His contract was set to expire Oct. 31. The new deal will pay him $4 million annually, according to a person familiar with the situation. Team presidents with the Cubs, Dodgers and Yankees all recently signed deals of at least five years at $5 million per year. Rizzo isn’t concerned with the shorter duration of his deal. “We win, we all eat better,” he said. Rizzo’s résumé includes four division titles and four 95-win seasons. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Hot-gloved goalie: Grubauer should be playoff starter (GAA) of 2.29. Defense becomes more important in the playoffs, and Grubauer gives Washington a better chance to advance into May than Holtby, whose confidence seems shaken. Trotz hasn’t named a playoff starter, but playing Grubauer in the 3-1 win over Pittsburgh on Sunday to clinch the Metropolitan Division said enough. If the coach is still deciding, he should refer to Washington history. Redskins coach Joe Gibbs benched quarterback Jay Schroeder at the start of the 1987 playoffs, and backup Doug Williams won Super Bowl MVP as Washington won its second Lombardi Trophy. Last year, Nationals manager Dusty Baker elected to start veteran Jayson Werth in left field in the playoffs, a move made in deference to his seven-year service. Werth hit .167 over five games and lost a ball in the lights when the Nats were knocked out by the Cubs in a bizarre NLDS finale. Even horse racing fans

The Capitals can’t be chained to their past. They need to start goaltender Philipp Grubauer in the playoffs. Sorry Braden Holtby. Take your 29-30 postseason record and sit on the bench. It doesn’t matter that Holtby has been Washington’s soul between the pipes for the past six seasons. Since Feb. 1, Holtby has allowed 3.38 goals per game. The Caps can’t risk being outplayed by a hot goaltender when the postseason begins April 11. Coach Barry Trotz has been content with rotating Holtby and Grubauer, and said he might continue the practice in the playoffs. But it’s time for a change. Grubauer was slated to start Thursday’s game against Nashville, which ended after Express’ deadline. He entered the contest with a 15-9-3 record. From Nov. 1 to Wednesday, he had been the NHL’s fifth-stingiest goalie, with a goals against average

GOLF Tiger Woods felt like he played better than he scored Thursday at the Masters in Augusta, Ga. Woods shot a 1-over 73 in the opening round, failing to make up any ground on the four par 5s. He’s feasted on Augusta National’s longest holes over the years, but made par on them all in his return to golf’s first major. “That was the difference in the round,” he said Woods, 42, had been away from golf for much of the past few years because of four back surgeries. The Masters is his first major since playing the PGA Championship in August 2015. The four-time Masters champion has typically been a slow starter at Augusta, having shot under par just once (a 68 in 2010) in the opening round. Jordan Spieth, the 2015 Masters winner, ran away with the final first-round lead of 6 under after five straight birdies on holes 13 through 17. Tony Finau, who dislocated his left ankle celebrating a holein-one in the Par-3 Tournament and popped it back into place Wednesday, made five birdies over 12 holes and briefly led at 4 under. Matt Kuchar finished with the same score to create a tie for second place. Defending champion Sergio Garcia made history — and not the good kind. Garcia (9 over) carded a 13 on the par-5 15th after hitting four shots in the water matching the highest onehole score in Masters history. (AP)

Emily Blunt, left, and John Krasinski exchange a knowing look in “A Quiet Place,” because they have to — aliens prey on humans when they hear a noise.
The power of silence John Krasinski’s ‘A Quiet Place’ speaks volumes — even though it’s mostly wordless
‘A Quiet Place’
FILM REVIEW A creeping, increasingly queasy sense of dread pervades “A Quiet Place,” John Krasinski’s nervy thriller that marks a notable addition to the recent spate of smart, timely genre pictures. Like “Get Out,” “A Quiet Place” deploys the most classic conventions of similar films that have gone before it, including jump scares, creepy-looking creatures, frightening camera angles and a terrifying sound design. In this case, though, even the most familiar gestures look — and, more pointedly, sound — brand-new. “A Quiet Place” opens in a leafy small town in upstate New York on Day 89 of a

mysterious invasion by voracious otherworldly beings. Unable to see but endowed with supernatural hearing, these clicking, hissing aliens hide out for most of the day, quickly swooping in to dispatch their victims only when attracted by a loud noise. The Abbotts — played by Krasinski and Emily Blunt, who are married in real life — lead a mostly silent life, communicating with their three children in sign language, tiptoeing around their Victorian farmhouse, creating trails of sand on which to walk barefoot to and from town, and playing the odd game of Monopoly with felt-coated pieces. Like a half-mad survivalist, Krasinski’s

IN A NUTSHELL: A family has to live in silence while hiding from creatures that use sound to hunt.
character labors in the basement workshop, trying to summon help with his shortwave radio and inventing a hearing aid for his daughter, who is deaf. As the personification of maternal nurturing and strength, Blunt’s character does her best to maintain a safe home, even while staying attuned to the threats that lurk just a stray whisper away. Like the best movies, “A Quiet Place” teaches the audience how
to watch it within the first 10 minutes, during which characters are introduced, the stage is set and the stakes are established and heightened in a sequence that plays out entirely without words. But not without sound: The movie’s ingenious sound design includes the gentle cadences of nature at its most reassuring. But when the point of view changes to the Abbotts’ adolescent daughter — played in an exceptionally sensitive performance by the deaf actress Millicent Simmonds — ambient noise is absent. “A Quiet Place” exemplifies cinematic storytelling at its most simple and inventive, using the grammar of sound and image to create an atmosphere of lived-in domesticity and looming terror. BOX OFFICE
The amount audiences spent globally at the movies in 2017, the Motion Picture Association of America said Wednesday in its annual report. That was despite the lowest attendance at domestic theaters in 22 years. The growth was largely propelled by China, which accounted for $7.9 billion in ticket sales in 2017. That fueled a 7 percent increase in the overseas box office. In comparison, ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada totaled $11.1 billion, down 2 percent. ‘Gemini’ R, 93 min.
There are enough suspects in the first seven minutes of “Gemini” to provide for at least a couple of murder mysteries. But the real problem isn’t an overabundance of potential killers. Rather, it’s the fact that the film — starring Lola Kirke and John Cho — does so little to make you care about the crime, or its victim, that the whole thing feels like an academic exercise. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
‘The Miracle Season’ PG, 99 min.
This tear-drenched sports melodrama fictionalizes the aftermath of the 2011 death of Caroline “Line” Found (Danika Yarosh), a brash and beloved girls volleyball star. Her death forces icy, inarticulate coach Kathy “Brez” Bresnahan (Helen Hunt) to locate her voice — and her humanity. The film itself is no champion, but it’s still a reasonably good cry. ‘Blockers’ is bonkers, but … The comedy sends an empowering message in between gross-out humor and sight gags
An ambiguous, even look at an infamous night
UNIVERSAL PICTURES
FILM REVIEW In “Blockers,” Leslie Mann plays Lisa, the single mom of a high school senior named Julie (Kathryn Newton), a vivacious teenager who, as the movie opens, announces a newfound goal of losing her virginity on prom night. Julie’s best friends Kayla (Geraldine Viswanathan) and Sam (Gideon Adlon) quickly warm to the plan, agreeing that they’ll take the leap together — or at least at the same time. When Lisa spies the trio’s texts on Julie’s laptop, she and the other girls’ dads — played by John Cena and Ike Barinholtz — embark on an anxiety-fueled, hysterically pitched mission to scuttle the young women’s plans, invading the kids’ prom night like a battalion of helicopter parents humming “Ride of the Valkyries.” “Blockers” possesses sharply observed moments of inspired lunacy. Produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, this combination of satire and slapstick also includes the requisite number of dumb, gross and otherwise icky sight gags, whether in the form of Cena agreeing to a “butt chugging” contest with a bunch of beer-buzzed 17-year-olds, or some unsettlingly graphic close-ups of male genitalia. Mann, a gifted comedian given a gratifying showcase for her talents, makes the most of a role that presents the broadly comedic twin of “Lady

Bird,” which also centered on a mom dealing with impending separation by spiraling into terror and misplaced rage. Directed by “Pitch Perfect” scribe Kay Cannon, “Blockers” suffers from ungainly, choppy pacing. It feels like a slapdash collection of scenes rather than a balloon sent smoothly aloft, with jokes often falling as flat as Cena’s buzz cut. There are more than a few stretches when nothing happens save for getting one group of people to the next backdrop for a sex joke or sight gag. Still, the underlying values

of “Blockers” are refreshingly healthy and affirming, proclaimed not only by Kayla’s pointedly levelheaded mom (Sarayu Blue) — in a fiery speech about the double standards and the dubious politics of policing female sexuality — but by the girls
themselves. Smart, self-aware, comfortable with asking for what they want — and, more important, with refusing what they don’t want — these teen feminists feel like avatars of an age when the term “me too” will have more to do with pleasure-with than power-over. Together with their male contemporaries, the girls of “Blockers” emerge as admirable examples of autonomy, confidence and selfrespect, never more so than when their clueless parents are running amok, half-cocked. Coming attractions: Movies in Saudi Arabia
The first movie theater in Saudi Arabia in 35 years will open April 18 as part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s efforts to transform the ultraconservative nation. AMC Theatres says it will open the country’s first new theater in Riyadh, with plans for up to 100 theaters in 25 cities by 2030. A source told Reuters that the theaters will not be segregated by gender, and that the first screening will be “Black Panther.” (AP)

FILM REVIEW Years before Watergate, the name Chappaquiddick became shorthand for political scandal. While the world was celebrating the 1969 moon landing — the legacy of John F. Kennedy’s belief in space exploration — the late president’s younger brother was in the midst of a devastating fall from grace. Taking its name from the Massachusetts island where Ted Kennedy drove his car off a bridge, resulting in the death of his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, the movie “Chappaquiddick” dramatizes that incident and its fallout. The Kennedy dynasty has its share of admirers and critics alike, and — to the film’s credit — “Chappaquiddick” does not appease either camp. The result is a challenging character study, punctuated by moments of suspense and dark humor. As Ted, Jason Clarke, above, portrays Sen. Kennedy as a man who loathes — yet takes advantage of — the heavy expectations that fall on his shoulders. While he experiences genuine grief over Mary Jo’s death, that does not hinder his capacity for slick manipulation. “Chappaquiddick” provides just enough detail to allow us to draw our own conclusions, yet no viewer will think of Ted in quite the same way. For a true-crime film about a well-documented incident, the movie’s ability to preserve ambiguity is remarkable in itself. ALAN ZILBERMAN (TWP)

“Originally I was buying six, but as soon as I heard that [comment] I bought every damn cupcake. I spent $54 on cupcakes.” VEGA BLOSSOM, recounting on Facebook how she bought an entire bakery’s worth of the miniature treats after a fat-shaming incident. Blossom said she was waiting in line at a local Indiana bakery that was having a sale. Once Blossom finally reached the counter after another customer “took forever” purchasing a cake, the woman behind her snapped, “Now let’s hope this fat b---- doesn’t buy all the cupcakes.” The woman’s out-of-line comments inspired Blossom to give her a solid dose of karma by doing just that.

@USERNAMEDA_, reacting to a crash
“I am not even close to being tired of the ‘American Chopper’ shouting meme. Please proceed.”
that occurred Wednesday on dating app Tinder after Facebook updated its data collection procedures in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The crash created a glitch in the log-in loop between Tinder and Facebook for users, in addition to deleting all of their matches. Luckily, Tinder fixed the problem later on Wednesday.
@BLAIRREEVES, on the internet’s latest meme. It’s derived from a 2009 segment of the Discovery Channel’s “American Chopper,” in which father-and-son duo Paul Teutul Sr. and Paul Teutul Jr. get into a fight over Junior’s tardiness. Users have created their own ridiculous arguments based on TV shows, philosophical debates and more.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You can combine business and pleasure today — but business, until all is completed, will take precedence. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You are the target of someone’s displeasure, perhaps, but that doesn’t mean you must dodge attempts at communication. On the contrary. You want to dedicate yourself to something that you know is important to others, even though no one has spoken up just yet. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) The plans you are trying to make depend in large part on your ability to see into the future with some clarity. Today you can do just that. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) What others are telling you to do today is not likely to be your best choice — but you don’t have to be outwardly defiant, do you?
FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Actors ruin franchise opportunities
Say ‘Livid Blake Lively’ five times fast Blake Lively was “livid,” Page Six reports, to see that photos of her 3-yearold daughter, James, were published on multiple outlets. The photos were taken at a party at Martha Stewart’s home on Sunday. “The photos were taken by a man hiding outside of a private party, which is disturbing on many levels,” Lively’s rep told Page Six. Outlets including Vogue, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar have since removed the photos or edited James out of them. (EXPRESS)
Ruth Negga and Dominic Cooper have ended their relationship after eight years together. “Pals say the off-screen romance ran its course and the two are moving on,” Page Six wrote, adding that they plan to stay friends. People magazine notes that the two were last photographed together in December 2017. The actors have co-starred several times, including on the AMC series “Preacher” since 2016, in a London production of “Phedre” in 2009 and in the 2016 film “Warcraft.” Page Six also noted that Cooper stars in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” set for release in July, alongside ex-girlfriend Amanda Seyfried. (EXPRESS)

Jaime’s son, 4, struck by glass after car jumped
Kendall, Kylie solve the least of their problems
Jaime King’s 4-year-old son was hit by glass after a man jumped the car he was sitting in. People magazine reported that King’s son was accompanied by one of her female friends when a man, whom police have identified as Paul Francis Floyd, leapt onto the car’s rear windshield, smashing it. Floyd was arrested on several counts, including felony child endangerment. (EXPRESS)
A lawsuit from photographer Michael Miller against Kendall and Kylie Jenner’s fashion label over T-shirts with Tupac Shakur’s image on them is being dropped. Miller had alleged the sisters used his pictures of Shakur without permission on their T-shirts, which the Kendall + Kylie label denied. The T-shirts superimposed the sisters’ images over famous musicians, but the brand pulled them after complaints. (AP)
