Two thieves who snatched a statue of a lion from outside a home in a Philadelphia suburb had a change of heart after police posted surveillance video of the heist. The statue was taken from the West Chester residence on Wednesday. By Friday, police posted a video of the thieves returning it. The thieves also left behind a bouquet of flowers and a card. Police said it was a “smart move to return the property” and the owner is grateful. (AP)
Authorities say it could cost over $50,000 to repair a Ridgefield, Conn., baseball diamond where someone dumped 25 gallons of gasoline Saturday and set it on fire in an effort to dry out the infield. Police are investigating. First Selectman Rudy Marconi told Hearst Connecticut Media that 75 to 100 people watched as it happened. Judge Filipe Luis Peruca scolded the brothers for their “bad faith” and ordered both to pay. (EXPRESS)

Uber, but for football practice TRANSPORTATION It was nearing 5 p.m. on a Wednesday, and Shawna Walker was doing three things at once. After a long day of conference calls from her Springfield, Va., home, the federal employee was rushing to finish an assignment for her job in human resources. She stirred a pot of spaghetti on the stove and made sure her 14-year-old son, Jalen, was working on his homework. Jalen’s football practice would start in a half-hour, but both Walker and her husband were still tied up with work. Then, a woman knocked on the front door, wearing an orange Tshirt with the word “CareDriver” on the back. It was “Miss B,” Jacqueline Bouknight, who works for HopSkipDrive, a ride-hailing service for children ages 6 to 18 that is expanding in the area. For years, parents have been using ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft to move their children around. But the companies’ terms and conditions instruct drivers not to pick up

At about $20 a ride, the service is more expensive than Uber and Lyft, but HopSkipDrive also allows families to team up in carpools, bringing down the cost, cofounder Joanna McFarland said. It has launched in Fairfax, Arlington and Alexandria and plans to start service in the District within the next couple of weeks, and in Maryland before the start of the next school year. Several hundred families and nearly 100 drivers have already signed up in the region, McFarland said. Sandi Tartisel, of Alexandria, was skeptical about the service at first. But she was convinced by the requirements for child care experience. She has booked two rides already, and says HopSkipDrive has been a godsend. As a single mother commuting to her job as a legal secretary in D.C., Tartisel struggles to get her son, Carter, to baseball practice, math tutoring and doctor’s appointments. “I definitely need this kind of support and I’m sure there are other single parents in my shoes,” Tartisel, 49, said. Md. mourns loss of speaker
THE DISTRICT
Under investigation, Evans gets primary
ANNAPOLIS In his prime, Maryland House Speaker Michael E. Busch had the barrel-chested stature of a former athlete and a habit of winking as he laughed at his own jokes. In death, his absence cast a vast shadow over the State House, triggering open crying Monday in the House of Delegates chamber, which he led longer than any other speaker in state history. “Yesterday, we lost a great man,” Del. David Fraser Hidalgo, D-Montgomery, said in a halting opening prayer, pausing for several seconds. “We lost our speaker.” Tearful sniffs from lawmakers and staff filled the silence that followed. Speaker Pro Tem Adrienne Jones and Busch’s longtime chief of staff, Alexandra M. Hughes, held each other and wept. Busch’s unexpected death from pneumonia on Sunday transformed the normally festive final day of the General Assembly’s annual legislative session, known by its Latin name, “Sine Die.” It also launched an impassioned closed-door fight over who should become House leader. Jones, one of at least three lawmakers said to be vying for the job, presided in Busch’s absence, wearing New Balance sneakers — the same brand Busch usually laced up for the long final day

Jones, D-BaltiBusch more County, felt overcome with the realization Busch was never coming back. “It hit me like a ton of bricks,” she said later. One thought raced through her mind: “Let me not mess up.” Other lawmakers mentioned as possible successors were House Economic Matters Committee Chairman Dereck E. Davis, D-Prince George’s, and House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Maggie McIntosh, D-Baltimore City. Any of the three would be a historic choice, since Davis and

Measures passed in Md. The General Assembly’s session has ended. Here’s a look at some of the measures that have been passed to Gov. Larry Hogan’s desk. (AP) Maryland could be the first state to ban foam containers for food and drink in an anti-pollution effort. Local school boards will be able to decide whether class starts before or after Labor Day. Maryland became the sixth state to approve a gradual minimum wage increase to $15 an hour. Maryland’s age for buying tobacco will rise from 18 to 21, including for tobacco-related products such as electronic smoking devices. Five oyster sanctuaries will be permanently protected in a law to prohibit catching oysters.
Jones are black and Jones and McIntosh are women. Maryland has never had a House speaker who was not a white man. Davis declined to comment on succession plans, saying the caucus was trying to wrap its arms around the loss of Busch, 72. “We’ve never been here before,” Davis said. He later added, “It’s appropriate that we just let Mike have his day today. We’ll figure it out later.” T h e G e ner a l A s s e mbly planned to stop legislative work at 11:30 p.m., 30 minutes ahead of the usual midnight adjournment, and hold a special joint session in memory of Busch. Feds: Man planned terror attack in Md. NATIONAL HARBOR, MD. Federal authorities have arrested a Maryland man they say planned to plow a stolen U-Haul van into crowds at the National Harbor, a large shopping and entertainment compound outside of Washington, as part of an Islamic State-inspired plot,
court documents say. Rondell Henry, 28, of Germantown, was arrested on March 28 at the waterfront complex in Prince George’s County with a U-Haul he had stolen from a parking garage in Alexandria two days earlier, according to a charging document unsealed last Thursday. Henry harbored hatred for “disbelievers” and admitted to the plot in several interviews with authorities, according to court documents.

Do Metro’s broken escalators actually provide a health boost? Most riders are skeptical.
slightly from scaling what is reported to be Metro’s sixthlongest escalator. “I guess I did OK if I’m still able to talk,” she said. “I did have to unzip my jacket, though.” For most people who use public transit, getting in a workout isn’t a choice. But apparently all that climbing up and down escalators-turnedstairs, running to catch buses and trains, and schlepping to and from stations is measurably good for them. According to a recent study by the University of Illinois College of Engineering, regular commuters are less likely to get fat than the rest of the public. Researchers examined health and lifestyle data from 227 counties in 45 states between 2001 and 2009. They found that for every 1 percent increase in the number of people who frequently take public transit, the number of people who are obese in a county dropped by 0.473 percentage points. That may seem infinitesimal. But given the D.C. area’s population of about 6 million, a 1 percent increase in frequent transit users — about 60,000 people — would mean 28,000 fewer obese people. “When people use public transit, they typically must walk/cycle to the stop/station, and on the back end, do the same,” study co-author Sheldon H. Jacobson said via email. “Also, during the transit ride, they may stand (more calories burned). If using a subway like in D.C., the internal walking also adds to the

On most days, and in at least a few stations, you’ll see exiting Metro riders come to a broken escalator. They’ll groan, and then, like Sherpas bearing backpacks and purses, they’ll join the slowmoving procession trudging up. So it seemed unusual how excited Brianna Knoppow was last month when she got off a Red Line train at Dupont Circle and walked to the bottom of the north escalator. She looked up at the 188 feet of stairs leading to an excerpt of a Walt Whitman poem etched on the walls near the top and started climbing. “I look forward to this,” she said. The escalator happened to be working that day, as are 93 percent of Metro’s escalators at most times, according to WMATA’s figures. But few who come across the 7 percent that are out of service embrace the challenge with Knoppow’s enthusiasm. It all started one day when she was running late and decided to climb rather than ride. “It seemed like a good way to tell if I was in shape or if I need to go to the gym more,” she said. Knoppow is a woman in her 30s who, like a lot of people in D.C., has a job with the federal government where she sits behind a desk all day. “This is my workout for the day,” she said. Less than a minute later, she stood at the top, panting

energy expenditure.” Plus, he added, “No food on public transit means no extra calories consumed during that time period.” The study reflected others. In 2009, University of British Columbia researchers found that people in Atlanta who used public transit were three times more likely to meet the Canadian government’s

recommendation to get 30 minutes of moderate physical activity a day, five days a week than non-transit users. So maybe we should applaud Metro for trying to keep us in shape? Rider Matt Garlipp wasn’t buying it. “@wmata both up elevators are not working at Mt. VernonConvention Center Metro
station,” he complained on Twitter last month. “Nobody working on either one. What’s up?” He wasn’t ready to cheer Metro after hearing about the study, either. But it did make him think of a joke by the comedian Mitch Hedberg, and a suggestion for Metro. “An escalator can never break — it can only become stairs,” he said. “You should never see an ‘Escalator Out of Order’ sign, just ‘Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the Convenience.’ ” And not even Knoppow, the enthusiastic escalator-climber of Dupont Circle, was willing to espouse the health benefits of coming across one of Metro’s broken escalators. “Usually,” she said, “my first thought is, ‘Really, Metro!? Another broken escalator?’ ” Reach Kery Murakami at kery.murakami@washpost.com. Follow him @theDCrider.

stimulation noted that its decline with normal aging is not huge. But “they removed the effects of age from these people,” said Dr. Barry Gordon, a professor of neurology and cognitive science at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. “It’s a superb first step” toward demonstrating a way to improve mental performance, said Gordon, who was not involved in the study. Reinhart agreed that more research is needed before it can be formally tested as a treatment. The electrical current was administered through a tightfitting cap that also monitored each subject’s brainwaves. For participants, that current felt like a slight tingling, itching or poking

HEALTH Zapping the brains of people over 60 with a mild electrical current improved a form of memory enough that they performed like those in their 20s, a new study found. Someday, people might visit clinics to boost that ability, which declines both in normal aging and in dementias like Alzheimer’s disease, said researcher Robert Reinhart of Boston University. The treatment is aimed at “working memory,” the ability to hold information in your mind for a matter of seconds as you perform a task, such as doing math in your head. It’s crucial for things like taking medications, paying bills, buying groceries or planning, Reinhart said. “It’s where your consciousness lives ... where you’re working on information,” he said. The study is not the first to show that stimulating the brain can boost working memory. But Reinhart, who reported the work Monday in the journal Nature Neuroscience, said it’s notable for showing success in older people and because the memory boost persisted for nearly an hour minimum after the stimulation ended. One scientist who has previously reported boosting working memory with electrical

sensation under the electrodes for about 30 seconds, Reinhart said. After that, the skin got used to the current and it was imperceptible. The researchers’ idea was to improve communication between the brain’s prefrontal cortex in the front and the temporal cortex on the left side, because the rhythms of activity in those two regions had fallen out of sync c with each other. So the researchers applied the current to those two regions to nudge the activity cycles back k into a matching pattern. The results provided new evidence that a breakdown in that communication causes the loss of working memory with age, Reinhart said.
Telemedicine might be leading to the overprescribing of antibiotics to children, a new study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics suggested. Researchers found that children with cold symptoms received prescriptions for antibiotics more than half the time during telemedicine visits, compared with 42% at urgent care clinics and 31% at doctors’ offices. The researchers also found that in looking at telemedicine doctors’ decisions about whether to prescribe or not prescribe antibiotics, 4 out of 10 failed to meet medical guidelines on matching treatment to diagnosis, raising the risk that they could contribute to the rise of antibioticresistant germs. Bomb blast kills 4 Americans Taliban claim attack, highlighting challenges to peace in Afghanistan KABUL, AFGHANISTAN Three American service members and a U.S. contractor were killed when their convoy hit a roadside bomb on Monday near the main U.S. base in Afghanistan, the U.S. forces said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. The U.S. and NATO Resolute Support mission said the four Americans were killed near the Bagram Air Base, north of Kabul, while three others were wounded in the explosion. The base in Bagram district is located in northern Parwan

It added that in accordance with U.S. Department of Defense policy, the names of service members killed in action were being withheld until after the notification of next of kin. In their claim of responsibility, the Taliban said they launched the attack and that one of their suicide bombers detonated his explosives-laden vehicle near the NATO base. KIGALI, RWANDA | Relatives of 10 Belgian United Nations peacekeepers who were killed during the 1994 Rwandan genocide stand at the Belgian Peacekeepers Memorial on Monday in Kigali. Rwanda has begun commemorating the genocide that began 25 years ago and took 800,000 lives. During a 100-day period, Hutu extremists slaughtered ethnic-minority Tutsis and Hutus who tried to protect them.

ENVIRONMENT The most comprehensive measurement of glaciers worldwide found that thousands of these inland masses of snow compressed into ice are shrinking 18 percent faster than an international panel of scientists calculated in 2013, losing 369 billion tons of snow and ice each year, more than half of that in North America. The world’s glaciers are shrinking five times faster now than they were in the 1960s. Their melt is accelerating due to global warming, and adding more water to already rising seas, the study found. The glaciers shrinking fastest are in Central Europe, the Caucasus region, western Canada, the U.S. Lower 48 states, New Zealand and near the tropics, according to a study in Monday’s journal Nature. “In these regions, at the current glacier loss rate, the glaciers will not survive the century,” said lead author Michael Zemp, director of the World Glacier Monitoring Service at the University of Zurich. Zemp’s team used ground and satellite measurements to look at 19,000 glaciers. A number of factors contribute to rising sea levels, which threaten coastal cities and increase the risk of flooding. The new figures suggest that glacier melt is responsible for about 25 percent to 30 percent of the rise in oceans, Zemp said. SETH BORENSTEIN (AP)

Iran force dubbed terrorists FOREIGN AFFAIRS The United States moved Monday to list Iran’s elite military Revolutionary Guard Corps as a foreign terrorist organization as the Trump administration looks for new ways to increase economic and political pressure on the Islamic regime in Tehran. The designation marks the first time Washington has branded a foreign government entity a terrorist group and came despite warnings from U.S. military and intelligence officials that other nations could use the designation as a precedent against U.S. action abroad. The announcement also came a day before today’s Israeli elections, in which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking a fifth term with hawkish promises to counter threatening Iranian behavior across the Middle East. “This action sends a clear message to Tehran that its support for terrorism has serious consequences,” President Trump said in a statement. “We will continue to increase financial pressure and raise the costs on the Iranian regime for its support of terrorist

41 Rohingya men arrive in Malaysia; 200 still at sea
Korean Air’s chairman, Cho Yang-ho, has died due to illness, the company said Monday. Cho had been indicted on multiple charges, including embezzlement and tax evasion. His death came two weeks after shareholders voted to remove the 70-year-old from the company’s board over a series of scandals surrounding his family, such as his daughter’s infamous “nut rage” incident in 2014. Malaysian police said Monday that 41 Muslim Rohingya men and boys have been detained in the northernmost state of Perlis, and that some 200 others are still believed to be at sea. The men told police that they were among more than 200 Rohingya in a large boat that sailed overnight from Thailand. This is the second group of Rohingya to land in Malaysia in just over a month. branding “the government of the United States as a supporter of terrorism and Central Command … and all of its affiliated forces, as terrorist groups,” state news agency IRNA reported. The terrorist designation, which takes effect April 16, will allow the Trump administration to seek criminal penalties against elements of the military agency y and foreign officials
deemed to be aiding it. Designating the IRGC, as the sprawling agency is known, a terrorist organization will also allow Washington to ban travel to the United States for individuals associated with the IRGC. U.S. officials have long said that the group’s opaque structure and far-flung responsibilities provided a mask for terrorist activities that threaten Israelis, Europeans and U.S. forces. “The IRGC masquerades as a legitimate military organization, but none of us should be fooled,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters in making the formal announcement. The designation is likely to complicate U.S. actions in Iraq, where U.S. troops are focused on the Islamic State, but Shiite militias tied to the IRGC operate close by. The IRGC is also tied to Hezbollah in Lebanon, where the political wing of the group is part of the government. The idea has carried some bipartisan support for years. U.S. officials noted Monday that in 2007, then-Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and then-Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., signed on to a bill urging President George W. Bush to make the IRGC designation. Aegean Sea has ‘unusual’ rise in dolphin deaths ENVIRONMENT The Aegean Sea has seen a “very unusual” spike in dolphin deaths over the past few weeks, a Greek marine conservation group said Monday. The Archipelagos Institute said while it’s still unclear what caused the deaths, the spike followed Turkey’s largest-ever navy drills in the region — the Feb. 27-March 8 “Blue Homeland” exercises that made constant use of sonar and practiced with live ammunition. Fifteen dead dolphins have washed up on the eastern island of Samos and other parts of Greece’s Aegean coastline since late February, the group said. Its head of research, Anastassia Miliou, told The Associated Press that 15 is an alarmingly high number compared to “one or two” in the same period last year. The deafening noise of sonar, used by warships to detect enemy submarines, can injure dolphins and whales, driving them to surface too fast or to beach themselves — with sometimes fatal consequences — as they try to escape the underwater din. After several mass beachings of whales, NATO, to which both Turkey and Greece belong, adopted a code of conduct for using sonar to better protect marine mammals. Miliou said the alliance’s rules are respected by the U.S. Navy and the Greek navy but said it was unclear whether Turkey has implemented the guidelines. NICHOLAS PAPHITIS (AP)

in line for the job. She will need to resign — or more likely be fired — in order for McAleenan to assume the acting position under the act. Allowing individuals to fill roles in an acting capacity allows the White House to avoid Senate confirmation battles. Trump has seen several high-profile nominations flounder, while others have become distracting political fights. “I like acting. It gives me more flexibility. Do you understand that?” Trump said in January, facing questions about acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan. But it also serves as a “run around Congress,” said the Brookings Institution’s Darrell West. “He’s worried that he would not be able to get all of these people through the U.S. Senate, even though Republicans still control the Senate.” West added: “It makes the

POLITICS As President Trump looks to reshape the executive branch, he’s avoiding the words “you’re hired.” Trump’s choice of Kevin McAleenan as acting replacement for Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen spotlights the president’s increasing reliance on a once-obscure federal statute that governs how to fill vacant federal posts. It also raises fresh questions about his reliance on temporary appointments for key security roles. The reality-star president, who once made staff churn into prime-time television, has overseen massive turnover in just two years in office. But he’s shown little concern for creating uncertainty about the leadership of some of the country’s most important agencies. Disordered departures have become the rule in the Trump administration, with aides and even Cabinet officials pushed out at a record pace, often with no clear replacement plan in place. And when he does have a plan, Trump has made a habit of taking the creative route, going around in-place deputies to select other officials he believes are more loyal or amenable to his agenda. Officials with “acting” titles abound in key roles, from the secretary of defense to the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, and even the White House chief of staff. The Federal Vacancies Reform Act of 1998 gives a president wide berth to fill openings across the executive branch, and Trump has used it without restraint to rejigger the succession plans of the Departments of Justice and Veterans Affairs. But in selecting McAleenan, Trump will have to go even further. The agency’s undersecretary of management, Claire Grady, is technically next

administration look chaotic and not really in control of what it is doing, but Trump seems comfortable with that and he seems willing to live with that reality.” Shanahan assumed the post
in December after Defense Secretary Jim Mattis resigned over the president’s Syria withdrawal plans, and Trump has not named a permanent replacement. Mulvaney has been acting in the role since January, after the departure of chief of staff John Kelly. At the Interior Department, David Bernhardt is serving in an acting capacity while his nomination to fill the role full time is pending before the Senate. The Office of Management and Budget is led by Russell Vought, while Mulvaney is at the White House. Additional “actings” fill posts at the sub-Cabinet level. The Senate Judiciary Committee’s top Democrat, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Calif., said at the Homeland Security Department at least 10 top positions are filled in an acting capacity. She said: “The purge of senior leadership at the Department of Homeland Security is unprecedented and a threat to our national security.” ZEKE MILLER (AP)

Secret Service head is leaving amid shake-up WASHINGTON U.S. Secret Service Director Randolph “Tex” Alles is leaving the Trump administration, the White House said, amid a shake-up in the upper echelon of the Department of Homeland Security. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Trump has selected career Secret Service official James Murray to lead the agency, saying he will assume the role next month. She added that Alles, above, will be “leaving shortly,” though the agency later said he would leave in May. Alles’ departure stems from a personality conflict within the agency, three officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the personnel matter. The officials said it was unrelated to the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and a recent security breach at the president’s private club in Florida. Still, it comes amid a spate of turnover across DHS that began last week when Trump withdrew his Immigration and Customs Enforcement director’s nomination to stay on permanently. After Nielsen’s departure, an empowered Stephen Miller, the immigration-hawk White House senior adviser, is also eyeing the removal of Lee Francis Cissna, according to two of the people. Cissna is director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, which runs the legal immigration system. ZEKE MILLER, COLLEEN LONG AND JILL COLVIN (AP)

Repeat champs? Capitals capable of defying history. Can the Capitals repeat as champions? The second time will prove just as daunting, but it’s doable. Washington begins defense of its Stanley Cup championship Thursday against the Carolina Hurricanes, who have emerged from a 10-year postseason exile. Maybe this series will be a breather for the Capitals, who swept the four-game regular-season series against Carolina. But we’ve seen favored Washington squads exit postseasons early.
Nothing is easy in April. After Carolina, the path will inspire memories of last year. The reward for beating the Hurricanes would be facing archrival Pittsburgh or former Caps coach Barry Trotz and his upstart Islanders. Everyone knew something special was ahead for the Capitals last year after they beat Pittsburgh in the second round. After all, Caps-Pens is one of the top rivalries for Washington teams alongside Redskins-Cowboys and Nationals-Phillies. But there’s something deliciously tempting about the possibility of facing
Trotz, who led the Capitals to the title before bolting as a free agent. If the Capitals reach the Eastern Conference finals, they could meet the Lightning, just as they did last year, when they survived a seven-game series. Washington then beat the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final in five games. This season, Tampa Bay tied the NHL record of 62 wins (compared to Washington’s 48), so the oddsmakers would peg the Caps as decided underdogs against the Lightning this time. But if the Capitals are still standing when the finals start in June, strike up the band and get ready for another parade. There’s just one problem with this scenario — Washington teams have rarely won titles, let alone back-to-back. Only D.C. United (1996-97) has won it all in consecutive years. The Redskins reached consecutive Super Bowls only once, and lost to the Raiders as defending champions in 1984.
The Bullets lost their rematch to Seattle in 1979. And the Senators won the 1924 World Series only to lose to Pittsburgh in seven games the next season. Walter Johnson, the best player ever in the nation’s capital, gave up three runs in the eighth inning to lose the crown. If you put D.C. history aside, it’s good to remember that this Capitals team finished with 104 points, only one fewer than last season. Alex Ovechkin certainly isn’t worried about history, and do you think he is complacent after winning a ring last year? The man lives for drinking from the Cup. Ovechkin, who will be 34 when next season begins, is nearing the sunset of his career, and the next few years are about chasing immortals. It’s hard to do that with just one crown.

3 Tight Final Four games The 11-point combined differential for the three Final Four games was the closest ever. In the semis, Baylor topped Oregon 72-67 and ND beat UConn 81-76.
2 Attendance on uptick More than 40,000 fans attended the Final Four games in Tampa, the most since 2010. Nearly 275,000 attended the tourney, the highest total in over 15 years.

This past Saturday, a stark reality check arrived in the form of a 4-0 home loss to league-leading Los Angeles FC. Charcoal is everywhere, but why?
NUTRITION Just when the connection between diet and health is getting the respect it deserves, there is a growing backlash to the idea of food as medicine, with some experts arguing there are downsides to seeing food as anything more. They’re responding to the barrage of “superfood” claims, such as menus claiming lemon alkalizes the body or websites touting coconut oil for osteoporosis. These outlandish statements can drown out the more nuanced messages about how diet truly affects well-being. For most of the past century, eating habits were given little more than a nod by mainstream medicine. Now, the way we eat is widely recognized as critical to the prevention and management of many illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that up to 40 percent of deaths from diseases such as heart disease and stroke, and some kinds of cancer, are preventable with lifestyle changes. Eating for wellness has become fashionable, with Beyonce challenging her fans to go vegan and lines of millennials waiting to order salads and grain bowls at healthy fast-casual restaurants. “It’s a movement whose time has come,” says David Katz, past president of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. “If we think of medicine as something
No such thing as a superfood Eating well can do wonders for your health, but food shouldn’t be seen as medicine that can treat a serious condition, then, yes, food is medicine.” He listed several diet studies that show healthy eating can lower cholesterol, reduce blood pressure and decrease diabetes and heart disease. “What we know about diet and health is so solid in the form of dietary patterns,” says Katz. “But when we get to claims about individual foods,
step away from your credit card and no one will get hurt.” That’s the snag in the food-asmedicine concept. Overall dietary patterns are what matters for health, not any single ingredient or compound — but there is profit in misrepresenting that. “I see the push toward food as medicine as being a marketing push,” says Marion Nestle, professor emerita
of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University. “Marketers try to convince you that one food, one product, is going to make a difference, but that’s not how it works.” Approaching food as medicine in this way is not just a waste of money — it could be dangerous if people decide to consume turmeric tea or wheatgrass shots instead of their regular prescriptions. Robert Graham, an integrative medicine physician and chef in New York City, sees this regularly. He recently had a patient who wanted to start drinking hibiscus tea instead of taking blood pressure medication. Graham steered the patient away from the notion of a quick fix to a gradual, integrated approach, with the goal of possibly reducing or eliminating the need for medication down the road. Taking a pill-like view of eating also does a disservice to food as a whole. Food is flavor, pleasure, connection and social interaction. Seeing, say, broccoli or ginger as purely medicinal detracts from the multifaceted delight these foods bring to the table. The taste of food is important to our well-being. It would be a loss to view food only as a “cure” you need a chaser to get down. As Nestle puts it, “Food is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and one you get to enjoy several times a day.”
You can now get almost any personal care product with activated charcoal: soap, deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, masks. The health and beauty industry is banking on the idea that if charcoal binds to impurities in air or water, it will do the same on our bodies. But evidence is scarce. Dermatologist Megan Rogge says, “There have been no controlled studies to say charcoal ... produces any significant change in skin.” And opinions on the efficacy of charcoal toothpaste are split. Some dentists swear by it; others abhor it. No studies show that using charcoal products for oral health does any good. Activated charcoal may be the new black, but if you look closer, you’ll find plenty of gray. LAURA DAILY (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK
Yet another job, same old burnout Q. I’m experiencing the classic symptoms of job burnout, and I notice this in a lot of my jobs. I start out loving them and after a couple of years start feeling totally unmotivated. I get stressed to the point where I dread going to work and hate my co-workers. I try to practice self-care, but something isn’t working. I am in a high-stress field, but plenty of other people don’t get burned out. And plenty of people drink kombucha without a full-body revolt (though I can’t see how). But it’s not about everybody else. You’re an individual with your own interests, strengths and challenges. It could be that something in this field — or the stress of it — makes it hard for you to set limits. Or that the work environment itself in terms of people, hours or expectations is something that would
wear down most people. But the fact that you love it at first before things go south suggests this could be fixable. You’ll need more insight (perhaps with help) into exactly what’s happening — whether your self-care isn’t as sustaining as you think, the jobs aren’t as good a fit as you hope, or your personality is simply better suited to change every couple of years. (No crime there.)
worker after she complained about her landlord and shady things he was doing. I asked my husband, an attorney, for advice and even found resources for her. I put it all together in an email and I felt really good about it, but she got weird and said I overstepped my bounds. Now I feel really awkward and she has been acting lukewarm toward me. I can’t seem to get past the weirdness and my own frustration. For sure, it stings to put effort into helping someone only to find out you offended them instead. I can’t be sure where things went off course here, but if you want to clear the air, I’d recommend addressing it without further delay. You’ll have a delicate balance to strike between groveling with an undue apology versus defensiveness that misses what exactly went wrong in the first place. Start neutrally and respectfully: “I understand I upset you and you felt I overstepped my bounds. I thought I was helping, and I’m truly sorry it came off that way. I know now and it won’t happen again, and I’m really hoping we can go back to how things were.” Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. TELEVISION “Fosse/Verdon” director Thomas Kail is quick to rattle off the ways he differs from Bob Fosse, the Broadway legend who shares half the spotlight in FX’s new limited series. “He would do substances to try to stimulate his creativity; he would create acrimony so he could use that as a spark to create; he was constantly feeling like he was a failure,” Kail says of Fosse, a nine-time Tony-wi nni ng choreographer and director. “A Kail lot of those things that fueled him are different than the things that drive me.” “What I did understand,” Kail adds, “was his seeking of the new challenge.” “Fosse/Verdon,” which premieres at 10 p.m. today, taps, shuffles and sways its way through the decades-long professional and romantic relationship between Fosse (Sam Rockwell) and Broadway star Gwen Verdon (Michelle Williams). The first episode follows Fosse as the stage staple oversees production of his second film, “Cabaret,” for which he would ultimately win the best director Oscar in 1973. As the director of the musical theater juggernaut “Hamilton,” Kail, 41, already has a legacydefining success to his name. When “Hamilton” writer and star Lin-Manuel Miranda approached Kail in June 2016 to gauge his interest in collaborating on an FX adaptation of Sam Wasson’s 2013 book “Fosse,” the Northern Virginia native seized the opportunity to establish himself anew and make an ambitious foray from stage to screen — not unlike Fosse decades prior. Although Kail isn’t a stranger to TV — he snagged an Emmy in

2016 for helming “Grease: Live” — he had never before worked on a project of “Fosse/Verdon’s” scale. In addition to directing five of the series’ eight episodes, Kail serves as an executive producer (alongside Miranda, among others) and shares a story credit on the premiere. “I wanted to work on differentsized canvases,” Kail says. “I believe in momentum. “I believe in momentum. I believe in continuing to evolve and trying new things.” THOMAS KAIL, on what led him to direct the FX series “Fosse/Verdon” after the success of “Hamilton”
in continuing to evolve and trying new things. … I felt like if I found the right people to collaborate with, then maybe we could make something that could stretch the things that I do and allow me to grow as a craftsman.” It was in the early days of shaping the story that Kail and showrunner Steven Levenson (“Dear Evan Hansen”) carved out their take on the material. While the book was titled “Fosse,” they soon came to better appreciate Verdon, an actor and dancer who won four Tonys herself. In the series, she is depicted not as a muse, but as a collaborator with a knack for executing and articulating Fosse’s scattershot thoughts. “We asked the very simple question from the beginning: Why does the world remember him but it doesn’t remember her?” Kail says. “It felt like an opportunity to examine the mythology of the ‘lone male genius,’ which is false. This story is an opportunity to look at a creative partnership that was incredibly equal.” Told via a fragmented, nonlinear story structure, “Fosse/ Verdon” also gave Kail the opportunity to slickly re-create iconic musical moments — such as Liza Minnelli belting “Mein Herr” in “Cabaret,” or Verdon mamboing to “Who’s Got the Pain?” in “Damn Yankees.” But it was the intimacy of Fosse and Verdon’s relationship that most drew Kail toward this story. “It has to be grounded in emotional truth for the [musical] numbers to make sense,” Kail says. “I love putting together musical sequences, but I also love doing that as it relates to the everydayness of what it was like to live in their apartment, to stay up late with them, to get to know them beyond the work. That informs our interpretation of their work.” THOMAS FLOYD (EXPRESS)
