Winter, a hardened criminal, shows no evidence of remorse
‘But seriously, folks, campus parking violations are no joke’
This can’t possibly be good for a novice burglar’s self-esteem
An upstate New York police department fed up with cold weather has placed winter under arrest. The Post-Standard reports the Depew Police Department wrote Friday in a humorous Facebook post that it had arrested the season. Police said any more snow winter produces would be held against it in court, and joked that they’re willing to look past winter’s “most recent transgressions if it works with the department. (AP)
When the University of Florida’s president said on April Fools’ Day that people cited for parking violations on campus in the past year could get amnesty by donating food, many thought it was a joke. But on Friday, they learned it wasn’t. President W. Kent Fuchs said on Twitter that nearly 2,000 citations had been exchanged for 9,455 food donations. The food will go to the university’s Field and Fork Pantry. (AP)
A zoo in New Zealand said burglars attempting to steal its squirrel monkeys appear to have given up after the monkeys fought back, UPI reported. The Wellington Zoo wrote on Facebook that someone used bolt cutters to break into the squirrel monkey enclosure after the zoo closed Friday night. The monkeys’ injuries suggest they fought off their attackers. The zoo said they are recovering. A squirrel monkey weighs about 2 pounds. (EXPRESS)

A veteran’s whirlwind tour NATIONAL MALL Richard Overton, the grandson of a slave, worked in a furniture store and as a courier for decades until he finally retired when he was 85. That was more than 25 years ago. Lately, Overton — the country’s oldest World War II veteran at 111 — has been enjoying a bit of fame for his longevity, and these days he has a regular stream of visitors to his Austin, Texas, home. Last week, he mentioned to one of his visitors that he’d like to someday see the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the District. The next morning, he was headed there on a private jet. The whirlwind tour was put in motion after one of Overton’s friends, Allen Bergeron, introduced him to billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist Robert Smith, who donated $20 million to the museum. Smith’s father and grandfather served in the military, and Overton served as a sharpshooter

Overton told Smith that he’d like to see the museum, and Smith asked him, “What are you all doing this weekend?” Overton and a few of his friends who accompanied him got a private tour of the museum Sunday morning before it opened to the public. His secret to a long life includes cigars, whiskey and speaking his mind. “I enjoyed every bit of the tour,” Overton said at the museum as he lunched on soul food. Then he added, “I didn’t see my name up there,” referring to the World War II exhibit. His friends chuckled. “One of these days it will be,” he assured them. During the tour, retired fourstar general and former secretary of state Colin Powell, who is on the museum’s board, called Overton to welcome him. The two had never met. “ Everything we do with Mr. Overton turns magical,” Bergeron said, adding that a street in Austin was recently named after Overton. Overton has been to the White House several times and met President Barack Obama. When Overton came across the museum exhibit featuring the former president, he said, “Yes, sir! That’s my friend.” Asked whether he had been nervous to meet Obama, Overton shook his head. “He’s a good man. It was like meeting anybody.” ALLISON KLEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Students optimistic after Howard protest
ALEXANDRIA
Virginia man caught in terror probe pleads guilty
Demonstrators took over a school building in their bid for reforms THE DISTRICT Alexis McKenney, a Howard University student, remembers the celebration at her school Friday. She recalls shouting, “We won!” And the chants about student power that resounded. “And just us … rejoicing in that moment, with everyone jumping around and dancing and screaming, me on the megaphone,” McKenney said. “It was a really, really good moment.” The occupation of Howard University’s administration building ended Friday, as school officials made commitments and protesting students abandoned the makeshift home they had created in the “A” building. What remains to be seen is what those commitments will mean at the historically black university in Northwest Washington, and how Howard’s students and faculty will hold university leaders accountable. Many of the demands laid out by students were clear and direct — hire more counselors, disarm campus police officers, the immediate resignation of Howard’s embattled President Wayne A.I. Frederick. The results of the negotiations were murkier, with task forces created and reviews promised and indications that

Howard University students posted their demands during a standoff last week that involved the takeover of a school administration building.
Howard would listen to student voices. That suggested that while the protest set the framework for change at Howard, that change might not happen right away. “Institutional change doesn’t happen overnight,” said McKenney, a senior and a member of HU Resist, which led the eight-day occupation. “We knew that this was only the beginning. So we are prepared … to really help set that foundation, because regardless of how long it takes to put those systems in place, they’ll be there to stay for years to come.” The Howard occupation began in late March, as students swarmed the school’s administration building and remained encamped there. A lengthy standoff followed as students and university trustees met to negotiate over student
demands. Students sought the resignation of Frederick, a demand they initially described as non-negotiable but on which they later relented. “We understood that that wasn’t going to happen within our negotiations,” McKenney said. “It wasn’t worth losing everything that we had gained.” Jade Agudosi, president of the Howard University Student Association and a senior, pointed out that freshmen and sophomores were among those involved in the protest, ensuring the movement’s survival. “The university is going to be left in good hands — at least with the new wave of students and student leaders that I see emerging from this campus,” Agudosi said. City official floats lowering the voting age A D.C. lawmaker wants to lower the voting age to 16, inspired by the high schoolers who are campaigning for gun control. It would make D.C. the first municipality to allow minors to cast ballots in presidential contests. D.C. Council member Charles Allen today will introduce legislation to lower the voting age from 18 to 16. In 2013, Takoma Park became the first U.S. city to allow 16- and 17-year olds to vote in municipal elections. Allen introduced similar legislation in 2015. This time he senses the politics may be shifting. “It’s pretty hard for anyone to watch the events of the last couple of months and not understand the pure power and maturity of incredibly young voices,” he said. Rep. Brat looks ahead to tough fight VIRGINIA As an unknown economics professor, Dave Brat personified the grassroots revolution that shook the Republican Party four years ago when he dethroned House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and was elected to Congress from a district outside Richmond. But facing re-election after two terms, Brat is himself the target of a rebellion, this one by Democrats infuriated by President Trump’s election, which

galvanized a new wave of political activism nationwide, particularly among suburban women. In a recent fundraising pitch, Brat exploited the dangers he faces and invoked his improbable victory over Cantor to urge
Republicans “to rally to my side.” “The fight will be brutal,” Brat warned in the fevered appeal to Republican donors. “The Democrats will be out for political blood, and they will throw everything they have at me.”
Ominous signs include Republican Ed Gillespie capturing only 51 percent of the district in the 2017 gubernatorial race. And Democrats for the first time since 1961 carried Chesterfield County, a large chunk of the district where demographic shifts have pushed the electorate leftward. “It’s going to be a very tough race because of the shift in his district and the anti-Trump movement,” said Rick Buchanan, chair of the Virginia Tea Party Patriots Federation. “Right now, the Trump haters are over us in terms of enthusiasm. He has to energize his base.” PAUL SCHWARTZMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

President says Assad, Russia will ‘pay a price’ after chemical attack
TRADE SYRIAN CIVIL DEFENSE WHITE HELMETS VIA AP
MIDDLE EAST President Trump said Monday he would decide “probably by the end of today” on a U.S. response to the apparent chemical weapons attack on Syrian civilians. He suggested Syria’s main military ally, Russia, would “pay a price.” Speaking during a Cabinet meeting, Trump condemned the “heinous attack” Saturday that killed at least 40 people, including children. Asked by a reporter whether President Vladimir Putin bears responsibility, Trump said, “He may, yeah, he may. And if he does it’s going to be very tough, very tough.” He added, “Everybody’s gonna pay a price. He will, everybody will.” Amid the tough talk in the White House, the U.S. military appeared to be in position to carry out any attack order. A Navy destroyer, the USS Donald Cook, was underway in the eastern Mediterranean on Monday after completing a port call at Larnaca, Cyprus. The ship is armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles, the weapon of choice in a U.S. attack one year ago on an airfield in Syria after an alleged sarin gas attack on civilians at Khan Sheikhoun. The U.S. said the 2017 strike was intended to deter Syria from further use of chemical weapons. attack, although the government of President Bashar al-Assad denied it. “To me there’s not much of a doubt, but the generals will figure it out,” Trump said after condemning Saturday’s suspected use of toxic gas. “It was an atrocious attack. It was horrible.” Trump said the U.S. is still investigating the possible involvement of the Iranian and Russian governments. “If it’s Russia, if it’s Syria, if it’s Iran, if it’s all of them together, we’ll figure it out,” he said. Trump had two planned meetings with senior national security aides Monday on Syria, in addition to a previously scheduled lateafternoon White House conference with leaders of U.S. military
U.N. resolution The U.S. urged the U.N. commands around the world. Monday was the first day on the job for Trump’s new national security adviser, John Bolton, who has previously advocated military action against Syria. The White House deliberations came as Russia and the Syrian
military blamed Israel for a predawn missile attack on a major air base in central Syria, saying Israeli fighter jets launched missiles from Lebanon’s air space. A group that monitors Syria’s civil war said the airstrikes killed 14 people, including four Iranians. The timing of the airstrikes in central Homs province, hours after Trump said there would be “a big price to pay” for the chemical weapons attack, raised questions about whether Israel was acting alone or as a proxy for the U.S. Israel did not comment. nation+world Nonpartisan analysis cites GOP tax cuts, increased spending ECONOMY The combined effect of President Trump’s tax cuts and last month’s budget-busting spending bill is sending the government’s budget deficit toward the $1 trillion mark next year, according to a new analysis by the Congressional Budget Office. The CBO report says the twin tax and spending bills will push the budget deficit to $804 billion this year and just under $1 trillion for the upcoming budget year. economic output over the coming decade. Those effects will only partially offset the deficit cost of the tax cuts. The administration had promised the cuts would pay for themselves. Instead, the report estimates that the GOP tax bill, which is Republican-controlled Washington’s signature accomplishment under Trump, will add $1.8 trillion to the deficit over the coming decade, even after its positive effects on the economy are factored in. The economic growth promises to drop the nationwide unemployment rate below 4 percent starting this year, the CBO predicts. The report paints an unrelentingly bleak picture of federal deficits, which would permanently

CBO reported that from 2021 to 2028, deficits will average 4.9 percent of the total American economy — higher than at any point since World War II, other than during the recession of 2008 and 2009. Annual deficits topped $1 trillion from 2009 to 2012, due to greater spending on social safety net programs and economic stimulus, as well as slumping tax receipts as the economy cratered. But the current deficit increases come amid steady economic growth and low unemployment. ANDREW TAYLOR (AP)

HUMBOLDT, SASKATCHEWAN One of those who died in the crash that killed 15 people en route to a hockey playoff game in western Canada was misidentified, Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Justice said Monday, partly because the players all had dyed-blond hair and similar builds. The province’s ministry of justice said the body of Parker Tobin was mistaken for that of Xavier Labelle. It said Labelle is injured but alive, and Tobin is among the deceased. The accident happened Friday. Drew Wilby, spokesman for the ministry, said the error was discovered on Sunday. “The new information came to light last night that raised questions with the health care professionals. In turn they were able to identify Xavier Labelle as Xavier Labelle, who of course we had previously said was Parker Tobin,” Wilby said. Wilby and the Office of the Chief Coroner apologized for the misidentification. “To find who they had thought was their loved one wasn’t their loved one, I can’t even fathom,” Wilby said. The news came as the shattered town mourned its revered youth hockey team, trying to come to grips with a devastating highway accident that also injured 14. POLITICS Michael Cohen, the longtime attorney of President Trump, is under federal investigation for possible bank fraud, wire fraud and campaign finance violations, according to a person with knowledge of the case. FBI agents on Monday raided Cohen’s Manhattan office, home and hotel room as part of the investigation, seizing records about Cohen’s clients and personal finances. Among the records seized were those related to a 2016 payment Cohen made to adult-film star Stormy Daniels, who claims to have had a sexual encounter with Trump, according to another person familiar with the investigators’ work. Investigators took Cohen’s computer, phone and personal financial records as part of the search of his Rockefeller Center office, the second person said. The broad seizure collected communications between Cohen and his clients — including some with Trump. The raid was related to an investigation referred by special counsel Robert Mueller to federal prosecutors in New York, said Stephen Ryan, an attorney for Cohen. Ryan called the tactics “inappropriate and unnecessary,” saying Cohen has “cooperated completely with all government entities, including providing thousands of non-privileged documents to the Congress and sitting for depositions under oath.” Among the records seized by investigators were “protected attorney-client communications,” Ryan said. On Monday evening, Trump
Lawyer Michael Cohen paid Stormy Daniels $130,000 days before the 2016 election.

called the raid of his attorney’s office and home “a disgraceful situation,” adding, “I have this witch hunt constantly going on.” A spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York declined to comment. A spokesman for the special counsel’s office declined to comment. Squire Patton Boggs, the law firm that formed a strategic alliance with Cohen last year, said Monday that its “arrangement with Mr. Cohen reached its conclusion, mutually and in accordance with the terms of the agreement,” adding, “we have been in contact with federal authorities regarding their execution of a warrant relating to Mr. Cohen.” It said, “These activities do not relate to the firm and we are in full cooperation.” Mueller is required to consult with Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein if his team finds information worth
investigating that does not fall under his mandate. Rosenstein has the responsibility of deciding whether to expand Mueller’s mandate to include the new topic or to refer it to a U.S. attorney’s office. Cohen has recently attracted attention for his acknowledgment that he paid Daniels $130,000 out of his own pocket just days before the 2016 election. Trump has said he did not know about the transaction. To pursue criminal charges against Cohen for breaking U.S. election law, prosecutors would have to prove that he made the payment to influence the election, rather than for personal reasons — to protect Trump’s reputation, for example, or his marriage. While the timing of the payment — 12 days before the election — might suggest an attempt to influence the outcome, experts say timing is not enough to prove intent. CAROL D. Zuckerberg on the Hill Facebook CEO to testify as part of a crusade to save the company and his legacy WASHINGTONPOST.COM WONKBLOG
Court: Prior pay no excuse to pay women less
percent in the past three weeks. A recent study by the American Press Institute and the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that just 12 percent of people trusted Facebook as a news source. The rising sense of distrust is upsetting to Zuckerberg, who was not made available for an interview for this article. Zuckerberg has long been considered synonymous with Facebook. But after only a few weeks of fallout from the Cambridge Analytica crisis, that assumption is suddenly not taken for granted. In response to a recent question about whether he is still the right person to run Facebook — mostly theoretical, because he controls voting authority on the board of directors — Zuckerberg quickly answered, “Yes, I think life is about learning from mistakes and figuring out what you need to do to move forward.” ELIZABETH
A federal appeals court ruled Monday that employers cannot justify paying a woman less than a man doing similar work because of her salary history — a move advocates say will help close the wage gap between the sexes. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit sided with the California math consultant at the center of Rizo v. Fresno County Office of Education, who argued that considering prior compensation when setting a worker’s pay perpetuates gender disparities and defies the spirit of the Equal Pay Act. Aileen Rizo sued her employer of three years after learning her male colleagues made much more money than she did, despite having less experience. Rizo’s employer admitted her salary was lower and argued the discrepancy stemmed from her prior salary — which, it asserted, had nothing to do with her sex. In the opinion, Judge Stephen Reinhardt disagreed with this logic. (Reinhardt died last week.) “The Equal Pay Act stands for a principle as simple as it is just: Men and women should receive equal pay for equal work regardless of sex,” he wrote. “The question before us is also simple: Can an employer justify a wage differential between male and female employees by relying on prior salary? Based on the text, history, and purpose of the Equal Pay Act, the answer is clear: No.”

TECHNOLOGY For many years, Mark Zuckerberg left matters in Washington to his deputies, who have long experience in politics. The Facebook chief executive instead focused on the company’s future, overseeing the development of cutting-edge technologies such as virtual reality and live video streaming. Now, the insularity that shielded Zuckerberg from having to directly defend Facebook in front of lawmakers and regulators has finally cracked. This week, for the first time, the 33-year-old billionaire is scheduled to testify before Congress, part of a crusade to protect not only the company he founded as a college dropout but also his broader legacy. Whether Facebook — and other tech giants, including Google and Twitter — faces more regulation hangs in part on what he says during two long hearings. Instead of planning for the future, Zuckerberg is scrambling to buy time to fix Facebook’s past mistakes. Zuckerberg traveled to Washington over the weekend and has holed up with advisers to prepare for the hearings, people who work with him said. Along with Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, he has gone on a rare media tour to emphasize that fixing Facebook will take several years. The chief executive is driven, according to more than a dozen colleagues and friends, by an optimistic desire for the social network to be seen not only as a ubiquitous communication tool — as necessary as the internet itself — but as a product people love. The same idealism that led him to create his unprecedented social network also led to blind spots, they said. But he is now starting to understand that saving
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has worked with advisers to prepare for hearings set for today and Wednesday.
Facebook will require him to evolve personally, said early Facebook investor Reid Hoffman. “I think Mark thinks, ‘If people can see the product, they can see what we’re trying to do, and so they don’t need to talk to me,’ ” he said. “But being a leader of a company that is a ‘social infrastructure’ — that is a major part of people’s lives — means that lots of people need to see a person, too.” Zuckerberg’s optimism has butted up against widespread public disappointment and growing pressure for more regulation from lawmakers in the U.S. and Europe. Facebook recently admitted that a Trump-campaignconnected data consultancy, Cambridge Analytica, misappropriated the personal information of up to 87 million people, which prompted lawmakers to call for the hearings that are set for today and Wednesday. Facebook also disclosed that its search tool enabled “malicious actors”

‘It was my mistake’ Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed contrition for allowing third-party apps to grab the data of users without their permission and for being “too slow to spot and respond to Russian interference” during the U.S. election, according to his prepared remarks published by the House Energy and Commerce Committee. “We didn’t take a broad enough view of our responsibility, and that was a big mistake,” he plans to tell lawmakers. “It was my mistake, and I’m sorry. MLB Only a couple of reporters lingered in the clubhouse after midnight Monday, but Brandon Kintzler let out a joking groan anyway. “Ugh, the writers,” he said before taking questions. After a fifth straight loss — and in Kintzler’s case, a third rough outing and a second straight loss in three tries against the Mets — no one wanted to answer questions. What could anyone really say? “It obviously wears on you. … I thought I made a lot of good adjustments from yesterday to today, as far as mechanicalwise,” Kintzler said. “And the movement was better. My arm slot was consistent. Just sometimes, you don’t get the result.” Kintzler’s bad result Sunday night came in the 12th inning
of what had been a 5-5 game. He allowed a leadoff single and walked Mets leadoff man Michael Conforto with the runner on second to set up a potential double play. But Yoenis Cespedes hit a broken-bat single into left to score the go-ahead run. Kintzler allowed two runs in the seventh Saturday and a grand slam to Jay Bruce in the home opener last week. For the setup man, like his team as a whole, nothing seemed to be going right entering Monday night’s home game against the Braves, which ended after Express’ deadline. “Hopefully in September we’ll just be laughing about this,” Kintzler said. “… I don’t even know what happened. But I’ll fix it.” The Nationals, to a man, said roughly the same thing. They’ll be fine. It’s early. They’re doing

The combined ERA for Nationals relievers entering Monday’s game against Atlanta. That was the fifthworst bullpen ERA in the majors behind the White Sox (7.11), Reds (6.75), Royals (6.53) and Pirates (5.67). Brandon Kintzler was 0-2 with an ERA of 15.75. (EXPRESS)
some things right, but the results haven’t been there. Although the first few games are admittedly a small sample size, one legitimate question has emerged, and not just because of Kintzler’s early struggles. Will this bullpen be good enough? Cespedes’ broken-bat single Sunday should not be taken as a sign of a struggling bullpen, not after six strong innings from
Shawn Kelley, Matt Grace, Ryan Madson, Sean Doolittle and Sammy Solis. Kelley and Grace loom as the most important figures in this group. If they pitch well, as they have so far, the Nationals look deep. After an unsuccessful 2017, Kelley bounced back with three scoreless outings to start this year. Grace, an unheralded prospect, had five scoreless outings in his first six appearances. Solis looked dominant as he struck out five in two innings Sunday, but his injury history means he requires constant workload management. And when someone like Kintzler struggles, the lack of bullpen depth is exposed. This bullpen — like most — could use another proven reliever. If Kelley and Grace stay healthy and pitch well, great. But the Nats can’t afford either to stumble, and need Kintzler to rejuvenate himself, too. CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Decision to go straight to G League could alter traditional path to NBA BASKETBALL Darius Bazley, 17, had discussed the decision with his mother and high school coach for about two months. On March 28, after scoring 11 points with seven rebounds in the McDonald’s All-American game, he made it public. Bazley — a 6-foot-9 wing from Cincinnati and the eighth-best player in his class in composite rankings by 247Sports.com — decommitted from Syracuse and became the first top prospect to forfeit his college eligibility and
Including six strikeouts in an April 1 win at Oakland, Ohtani has 18 total over 13 innings, tying Tim Fortugno’s franchise record for most in a pitcher’s first two games.

McGwire: ‘I didn’t need’ PEDs to hit 70 homers
Twenty years after setting a record with 70 home runs in a season, Mark McGwire said he could have done it cleanly. The former Cardinals slugger, now a bench coach with the Padres, has previously admitted he used performance-enhancing drugs in 1998. “I regretted it. I didn’t need to,” he told The Athletic in a story published Monday. Barry Bonds broke McGwire’s record with 73 homers in 2001. Rex Walters, a Pistons assistant and former G League coach, thinks playing in college is “the right thing to do,” but also saw former Duke star and Detroit
rookie Luke Kennard hit “a wall” this season because the professional schedule taxed him. “It’s going to be really interesting to see what the narrative after a year is,” Walters said. “If he’s a first-round pick, then more kids will do it. If he struggles … they’re going to point back to this.” G League executives don’t expect Bazley to set the league on fire at age 18. But multiple league officials said they’d be “surprised” if Bazley didn’t go first overall in October’s draft, based on his talent and the value that an NBA organization would gain by working with a potential lottery pick for a full season. declare directly for the G League, the minor league of the NBA. An anonymous NBA executive told Yahoo Sports that Bazley’s decision “could open the floodgates” for players who want to bypass college as a path to the NBA. The lure of a salary (the maximum contract for G-Leagueonly players is $26,000 per year); the ability to receive money from agents and sponsors; and full-time focus on development are all factors that could steer players away from college basketball, which is dealing with an FBI probe into illegal benefits provided to players. NFL It took just one phone call for the Redskins to acquire a quarterback they had been eyeing for years. But their recent move to swap sixth-round picks with Cleveland in order to get Kevin Hogan doesn’t rule out the possibility of drafting another quarterback at the end of this month. “When we get to [No.] 13, we’ve got to see who’s there,” Senior Vice President of Player Personnel Doug Williams said this weekend. “If there’s a quarterback that we feel should have gone [at the top of the draft], then that’s a major discussion. To say it’s off the table, that would be unfair.” Redskins brass never expected Jonathan Allen, the Alabama defensive lineman with Pro Bowl potential, to fall to them at No. 17 overall in 2017. Highly regarded quarterbacks can sometimes slide as well. Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers fell to No. 24 in the 2005 draft. The Texans got Deshaun Watson last year at No. 12. “Nobody could have told us that Jonathan Allen was going to be there. And that’s where that ‘best player available’ comes into play,” Williams said. behind starter Alex Smith and backup Colt McCoy. The Redskins have been interested in Hogan since before the 2016 draft, when the former Stanford signal-caller was selected by the Chiefs in the fifth round. When Kansas City waived Hogan a few months later, “we put in a claim for him, but Cleveland got him,” Williams said. Hogan has completed 60 of 101 passes for 621 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions in eight career games. Williams tried to end speculation that McCoy’s roster spot will be affected by the addition of Hogan. “Colt McCoy is very valuable to this organization. Very,” Williams said. KIMBERLEY A. Taming your cravings
Hunger may increase as the pounds decrease. Use these tactics to keep it in check. WELLNESS When you’re trying to lose weight, it’s easy to assume that as the number on the scale goes down, other issues associated with weight will be resolved. For example, if weight gain was due to overeating, as it often is, it’s understandable to expect that hunger and cravings would decrease along with pounds. A small but interesting study tells a different story. It followed 35 obese participants for two years as they were supported through a weight-loss program that included nutrition and exercise guidance. The participants were asked about their feelings of hunger and fullness and then fed a meal and asked again. In addition, hormones associated with hunger and fullness were tested before and after meals. The findings were intriguing because although the individuals lost weight and kept it off during the two years, their feelings of
hunger and desire — but not their feelings of fullness — increased. The hormones associated with hunger and fullness went up as well. In other words, after two years, the participants struggled with increased hunger going into meals, and even though their hormones suggested they felt satiated, they didn’t feel that way. One would hope that hunger and cravings would subside as weight changes, but that may not be the case. Managing hunger could be an ongoing struggle. Here are tactics to help you get through those hungry moments.
Eat fat, fiber and protein to boost feelings of fullness Depending on what’s lacking, add heart-healthy fats, fiberrich foods and proteins to create a satiating meal. Add fats such as avocado, oils, olives, seeds and nuts. Choose a fiber-rich starch such as potato with skin, lentils
Eat what you crave It’s OK to indulge sometimes. Pleasure can provide satisfaction and the sense that you’ve eaten enough. In their book “Intuitive Eating,” dietitians Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch point out: “When you eat what you really want … the pleasure you derive will be a powerful force in helping you feel satisfied and content.” CARRIE DENNETT (TWP)
or steel-cut oats. Incorporate proteins such as leaner cuts of meats and beans, and consider adding a few more ounces of protein than usual.
Be strategic about portion control Trick your brain into thinking you’re eating more than you are. Filling your plate with vegetables is a great way to allow a meal to appear larger than its caloric load.
Fitbit Local’s free Capture the Flag is 10 a.m. Sunday at Georgetown Waterfront Park
Using smaller plates and containers makes your meals look bigger. Eating smaller meals more frequently helps keep each meal small, and knowing the next meal is coming soon is comforting.
Be aware that feelings of hunger may not subside It’s easy to overeat if you’re starting a meal very hungry. Consider pausing before a meal to accurately assess your hunger. Take five slow breaths before eating. Bring the breath into the abdomen rather than chest and breathe at a slow rate. Look at your plate and assess whether the meal is balanced and satisfying. Pause while eating to taste the food and slow down the process of eating. Put your utensils s down for a few seconds to eat at more slowly and enjoy the experirience. JAE BERMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST) ST)
Modern gardening isn’t just about growing plants — it’s part of a wellness movement that includes everything from diet and exercise to a clean, livable environment. “Consumers are moving toward natural foods,” says Helen Lundell, a consultant who studies food trends. “First and foremost is the absence of pesticides and chemicals.” But gardening fits the moment in ways beyond healthier food. “People want to exercise,” Lundell says. “They want to connect with nature. … They want to have some private time and disconnect from social media. They want long-term weight management rather than crash diets.” All of these can be benefits of gardening. DEAN FOSDICK (AP)

Perhaps you are struggling and your need for support is obvious, and the fact that several people are suggesting this should be a pretty loud wake-up call. Or maybe these folks just happen to believe strongly in the mind-body connection (as do I). Either way, they’re likely on to something. Chronic pain not only causes stress, but there’s evidence that stress and emotional challenges, in turn, can make pain
feel worse. All pain, from your head to your toes, is felt in your brain, after all. And things like increased muscle tension (increased with stress) can objectively make you more sensitive to it. So, is therapy something you absolutely must try? Of course not. But it might be helpful to seek out a therapist who specializes in these mind-body issues, and to consider it part of your larger treatment plan.

Now, I am pregnant and wondering what to do for a baby shower. It feels strange to expect people to come when I didn’t go to theirs! NOT SURE HOW TO HANDLE THIS I can understand your worries, but anyone who bases their decision of whether to attend your shower solely on the fact that you didn’t happen to be at theirs doesn’t deserve a lot of your mental energy (or my word count).
