Old Town history uncovered In one block in Alexandria, excavations reveal three ships from the 18th century
PLAN AHEAD
KATHERINE FREY (THE WASHINGTON POST)
ALEXANDRIA Fifteen feet down in the muck, mud and sand, you can reach out and touch the remains of a ship, or three, that were so worn out by 1798 that they were scuttled to help create new land for Alexandria’s thriving commercial port. The wet wood was last dry when local resident George Washington had just retired from the presidency to nearby Mount Vernon, in a time before the invention of indoor plumbing, gas lighting or the steam locomotive. Alexandria’s top archaeologist calls the recently discovered ships “one of the most archaeologically significant sites in Virginia,” particularly in an urban setting. They were uncovered last month by contract archaeologists working with a developer on a townhouse and condominium project at Robinson Landing, along the Potomac River. The largest and best-preserved ship was discovered March 29. It remains partially buried, but it can be seen from Wolfe Street. The ship will get its moment in the sun Saturday afternoon, when the public will be given a

three-hour opportunity to peer through a chain-link fence and listen to archaeologists explain the site and answer questions. The other two ships, which are along the east side of the construction site and not visible from the street, were found March 9 and 16. They have not yet been fully uncovered. A fourth historic ship was dug up a block north along the waterfront in January 2016, as the
new Hotel Indigo was being built. Thunderbird Archaeology specialists have also unearthed about 100,000 artifacts — the foundation of a flour mill, foreign coins from Ireland, England, France and Spain, pieces of ceramics, bottles and animal bones. “We knew we’d find something, but three [ships] is over the top,” said Dan Baicy, field director for Thunderbird. The ships are being kept wet,
because every moment they are exposed to dry air causes deterioration, said Eleanor Breen, acting city archaeologist. The wood is soaked and covered at night. Once the original location is documented, the timbers will be brought to a warehouse on the West End, where they will remain underwater until city officials decide what to do with them. New food truck rules irk some D.C. vendors
MONTGOMERY COUNTY
Police: Missing mom may be linked to girl’s abuser
Pilot program threatens part of city’s culinary renaissance, critics say
JAHI CHIKWENDIU (THE WASHINGTON POST)
THE DISTRICT Hungry patrons browsing for lunch amid a gaggle of food trucks might not think their choice of a steak sandwich, curry, falafel or pho is a matter of chance. Yet in the District, home to about 450 food trucks, a monthly lottery by the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs decides which vendors control the most desirable spots in the city. The DCRA upset some food truck owners this week with a policy they say was announced without sufficient warning: one lottery entry per business. It’s substantially more profitable to operate at a bustling location like Metro Center or Franklin Square, so opponents say the change will cost them. “It’s going to be disastrous,” said Kirk Francis, owner of the mobile bakery and dairy bar Captain Cookie & the Milkman. Francis operates three trucks, two brick-and-mortar bakeries and a communal kitchen also used by other food businesses. When Francis tried to enter his three trucks earlier this month into the May lottery, the city’s computer system wouldn’t allow it. Thinking there was a mistake, he emailed the DCRA and

learned of the new guidelines. “The rules have changed. … We are only allowing one truck to enter the lottery each month,” read an email to Francis from a DCRA employee. “Thank you.” He can still place trucks at locations not included in the lottery, but they’re less lucrative. “If two of my three trucks are not allowed to participate, that means two to three spots per week per truck go away,” he said. “I don’t have a profitable thing to occupy them with.” On a recent episode of WAMUFM’s “The Kojo Nnamdi Show,” DCRA Director Melinda M. Bolling referred to the lottery changes as a “pilot” program that would be altered. “We’re interested in efficiency,
equity and fairness,” Bolling said. “We’ll be making changes in June to hopefully get to the right balance before the season is up.” DCRA spokesman Timothy Wilson said the agency announced the changes in March. Sam Whitfield, chairman of the DMV Food Truck Association and former operator of Curbside Cupcakes, said owners thought the agency was only mulling the change. He said truck owners are frustrated with the city’s lack of transparency on lottery and food truck regulation. “We could have this industry really moving forward instead of stagnating, which is happening right now,” Whitfield said. “It’s a hard pill to swallow.” JUSTIN WM. MOYER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Pollen levels set to explode in D.C. region Allergy sufferers — for the most part — have had an easy time of it so far this spring. The cold weather has kept tree pollen under wraps. But the sudden onset of weather in the 70s and 80s is about to unleash an onslaught. “The trees are ready to free their pollen and let it soar,” said Susan Kosisky, director of the U.S. Army Centralized Allergen Extract Lab. Kosisky said after the recent period of cool weather and low pollen counts, the upcoming breezy, warm weather will “induce a potpourri of pollen” from tree species in the region. “Best to modify outdoor activities, use central air conditioning, wear sunglasses if outdoors and get the Kleenex ready,” Kosisky said. Antihistamines can help, too. (TWP)

Naked man detained after Metro disturbance A naked man was taken into custody Thursday after he was “acting aggressively” toward Metro customers at the Dupont Circle station, officials said. The man was reportedly “disorderly” and “acting aggressively” at the stop, according to Metro spokesman Dan Stessel. Stessel said the man “failed to comply with police directives.” An officer then used a stun gun on the man. He was taken into custody without incident. Police: Man tried to steal Metrobus at knifepoint A knife-wielding man tried to commandeer a Metrobus in New Carrollton, Md., after ordering everyone off, but was foiled by an anti-theft safety system, police said. Officials said Tariq Kirkland, 38, got on an F4 Metrobus and pulled out a knife. Kirkland then forced everyone off the bus, but couldn’t move it because of a feature that “prevents an unauthorized person from taking control,” police said. Kirkland faces charges of attempted robbery, assault and attempted armed carjacking. (TWP)

faculty members cast ballots. In a statement, Board of Trustees Chairman Stacey J. Mobley said the board was disappointed, and disagreed with the vote results. There is “no question that Howard University has the right leadership in place,” Mobley said. A Howard spokeswoman said Frederick was not available for an interview Thursday. Howard faculty members have expressed concern about building conditions, a loss of staff and lack of a robust strategic plan to move the university forward. The vote results emerged not long after students ended a lengthy protest. Students who took part in the occupation had called for Frederick to resign, although they later backed down from that demand. SARAH LARIMER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Pompeo treads carefully in confirmation hearing

Comey: Trump obsessed with pee allegations
POLITICS Aiming to quell concerns before what is likely to be a narrow confirmation vote, Secretary of State-designate Mike Pompeo vowed on Thursday to ramp up efforts against Russia in “each place we confront them.” But he ducked and dodged when asked whether he supports President Trump’s pounding criticism of the federal investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Pompeo, now Trump’s CIA chief, tread carefully when confronted with several of the president’s controversial and undiplomatic statements, focusing instead on his plans to rebuild a depleted agency and restore its influence. Pompeo suggested he did not share all the president’s views — including his skepticism about Russia’s interference. “I take a back seat to no one” when it comes to standing up to Russia, Pompeo said. However, when asked if he would resign if Trump moved to scuttle the probe by firing special counsel Robert Mueller or the deputy attorney general to whom he reports, he said no. “My instincts tell me no,” Pompeo said about possibly resigning. “My instincts tell me my obligation to continue to serve as America’s senior diplomat

will be more important in times of domestic political turmoil.” In his testimony, Pompeo confirmed for the first time publicly that he’s been interviewed by the special counsel’s team. Mueller is investigating possible ties between Russia and Trump’s presidential campaign as well as possible obstruction of justice issues. But Pompeo wouldn’t answer questions about the contents of the interview, arguing it would be improper since, as CIA director in charge of overseas intelligence gathering, he has been a “participant” in Mueller’s probe. Pompeo’s nomination faces stiff opposition from a handful of Republicans and many Democrats, as well as supporters of
the Iran nuclear deal, environmentalists and minority rights groups. Pompeo’s testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee appeared designed to blunt their criticism. The CIA chief told senators that, despite previous comments savaging the Iran accord and hinting at regime change in North Korea, he has been miscast as a “hawk.” He maintained he wants to improve the Iran deal. Throughout the hearing, he drew a sharp contrast between himself and Rex Tillerson, the former CEO of ExxonMobil whom Trump fired last month. He lamented the “demoralizing” vacancies at the department during Tillerson’s brief tenure.
In his forthcoming memoir, ex-FBI Director James Comey describes President Trump as having been obsessed with the prostitutes portion of the infamous intelligence dossier released last year, raising it at least four times with him. The dossier claimed that Trump had watched prostitutes urinate on themselves in the Moscow suite that the Obamas had stayed in previously “as a way of soiling the bed,” Comey writes. Trump offered varying explanations to convince Comey it was not true. “I’m a germaphobe,” Trump said, according to Comey’s account. “There’s no way I would let people pee on each other around me. No way.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Google next in hot seat? While Facebook takes heat for its data practices, the search giant remains unscathed Google collects far more data from and makes more money off users than Facebook.
Tabloid paid for, but never used, a tip on Trump
SPENCER PLATT (GETTY IMAGES)
TECHNOLOGY With Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg having been grilled on Capitol Hill this week about his company’s data-gathering practices, privacy experts are asking a central question: Who let Google off the hook? The titan of search, smartphones and web browsing makes more money off its users than Facebook does, gathers more of their data and covers parts of their lives that Facebook can only dream of, Google documents show: what websites they’ve looked at, what places they’ve visited and many (if not all) of their searches, calendars, documents and emails. But in the privacy firestorm that has grown out of Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica scandal, Google has emerged mostly unscathed. The quiet fear among the nation’s tech elite, though, has been that extra attention on Facebook will reflect on everyone — Google, perhaps, most of all. Asked Monday whether he would like to see Google executives testify, Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., said: “Absolutely. Because it’s not just Facebook. [Zuckerberg] happens to be the point of the spear. But all these other apps and sites that get your personal data, that’s another way of us losing our privacy.” Google’s parent company, Alphabet, runs the world’s most popular search engine (Google), smartphone operating system (Android), Web browser (Chrome), video site (YouTube) and email service (Gmail), giving the company unprecedented details about its users. Google and Facebook share a long-standing duopoly that dominates online advertising. And Google shows no signs of slowing down: It is already considered an
industry leader in driverless car development (Waymo), smarthome appliances (Nest) and artificial intelligence (through Google AI and DeepMind), all of which need user data to thrive. “Google really has a much bigger footprint when it comes to tracking and profiling the everyday lives of billions of people,” said Wolfie Christl, a privacy researcher for the nonprofit think tank Cracked Labs. “And it’s often very invasive and very sensitive information. Many people try to Google search what they wouldn’t even tell their own partner.” Google spokeswoman Andrea Faville said the company allows users to learn what data is collected about them, see how it’s used and control how much is shared. The company’s policies prohibit deceptive behavior and misuse of personal data, she said. People who have downloaded their Facebook data have been surprised to find catalogues of
Google’s sales edge Google and Facebook account for about two-thirds of all U.S. digital ad revenue. But Google holds a major advantage over Facebook, because it fleshes out a user’s profile with data from all the sites that person uses: Instead of just the interactions people would share with their family and friends, Google knows a person’s private searches, travel schedule and YouTube views. That system of digital bread crumbs is often why a product someone searched for on one website can end up following them around the internet in ads. (TWP)
their online relationships, events and messages, as well as which advertisers have their contact information. But a download of one’s Google trove can be even more exhaustive, including users’ full browsing and search histories and by-the-second data on their physical activities and

real-time locations. So why is Facebook the only one in the hot seat? Scott Steinberg, the co-founder of Data Does Good, whose members raise money for nonprofits by sharing anonymous online shopping data, says the haphazard public conversation about data privacy is dominated by news-making flare-ups, such as the Cambridge Analytica episode. Google, he says, has more often avoided public criticism simply because it has been better at avoiding those kinds of scandals. “Google should be at the center of the more holistic conversation about data regulation and ethics. … They have significantly more data, both in terms of quantity and sensitivity, than Facebook, Amazon and [major data broker] Acxiom combined,” he said. “If the conversation becomes more about policy than about data breaches … I expect that Google will gain more of the spotlight.” DREW HARWELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)
POLITICS The owner of the National Enquirer, American Media Inc. (AMI), paid $30,000 in late 2015 to a onetime Trump Tower doorman who was offering an embarrassing story about thenpresidential candidate Donald Trump but never published it, according to a person familiar with the payment. A spokesman for the Trump Organization on Thursday denied the story that doorman Dino Sajudin told the tabloid: that Trump fathered a child out of wedlock in the late 1980s and that top executives of the Trump Organization, including longtime security chief Matt Calamari, knew about it. “Mr. Sajudin’s claims are completely false,” the Trump Organization said in a statement. A spokesman added that Calamari never made such a statement and accused Sajudin of having a history of peddling false stories. In an interview with The Washington Post on Thursday, Sajudin dismissed claims that he had made anything up. The news about the payment he received comes as federal investigators are examining efforts by Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen to downplay negative stories about Trump as he ran for president. One focus of the inquiry is Cohen’s relationship with David Pecker, AMI’s chief executive and chairman, according to people familiar with the investigators’ work. CAROL D. LEONNIG (TWP)

GOP proposes stricter rules on food stamps House Republicans took their first step Thursday toward overhauling the federal safety net, pushing for new work requirements in the food stamp program used by 42 million Americans. The plan, introduced as part of the 2018 Farm Bill over objections of Democrats, would dramatically expand mandatory state workfare programs in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as food stamps. Under the proposal, most adults between 18 and 59 who do not have jobs will be required to enroll in 20 hours a week of workforce training to receive assistance. The plan budgets $1 billion per year to fund the training program expansion. Democrats say the proposals in the Farm Bill lack the votes to advance to the Senate. Preliminary Congressional Budget Office estimates suggest the requirements would cut SNAP participation by as many as 1 million people over the next 10 years. In 2017, 42.2 million people received monthly SNAP benefits averaging $125.80 per person. Under current law, adults ages 18 to 59 who are not pregnant, disabled or otherwise exempt are required to work at least a part-time job or agree to take a job if it is offered to them. Additional work requirements apply to unemployed childless adults. CAITLIN DEWEY

POLITICS In a White House known for chaos, the process of developing the U.S. response to the Syrian government’s alleged latest chemical attack was proceeding with uncharacteristic deliberation, including several national security briefings for President Trump. But then Wednesday morning, Trump upended it all with a tweet — warning Russia, the Syrian government’s backer, to “get ready” because American missiles “will be coming, nice and new and ‘smart!’ ” White House advisers were surprised by the missive and found it “alarming” and “distracting,” in the words of one senior official. They quickly regrouped and, together with Pentagon brass, continued readying Syria options for Trump as if nothing had happened. On Thursday, Trump raised further questions. In a tweet, he added doubt to suggestions that military action in Syria was on a fast track. “Never said when an attack on Syria would take place. Starting quarterback Alex Smith had his first meet-and-greet with Redskins fans this week.
Itching to get to work Smith works out and watches film on his own before start of offseason program REDSKINS Alex Smith donned a Redskins jersey Wednesday night — burgundy with a white No. 11 — and took his initial steps at FedEx Field as a member of the home team. The new starting quarterback was welcomed by 200 season ticket holders in his new locker room, where he held a question-and-answer session with fans seated around the man they hope will bring postseason glory to a franchise that hasn’t won a playoff game since 2005. The Redskins don’t start offseason workouts until Monday, so Smith has been left to work on his own to get ready. “Looking forward to Monday and getting the ball rolling,” Smith said. “It’s all on your own
at this point. … You’re in the weight room, you’re on the field, you’re working on what you need to work on. For me, there’s a throwing element, a moving element, running. Everything that goes into playing quarterback.” Smith, a 13-year veteran, signed a four-year extension worth $94 million that includes $71 million in guaranteed money after he was traded from the Chiefs for cornerback Kendall Fuller and a third-round pick. Without being able to work with coaches, Smith has been watching old Redskins game film to learn coach Jay Gruden’s offense. “Just trying to digest it,” Smith said. “Some of it through osmosis, I guess. Just trying to take it in. I think every little bit helps as

We don’t have pads on. … We can take advantage of these days more than some of the big fellas.” Smith is coming off his best season, throwing for 4,042 yards and 26 touchdowns against five interceptions with a 67.5 completion percentage in 2017. Now settling in with his third NFL team, the former No. 1 overall pick of the 49ers is eager to get back to the business of football. “Definitely energizing,” Smith said. “New opportunity. New challenge. All those things.”

Kaepernick’s workout postponed ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday that the Seahawks postponed a workout with Colin Kaepernick this week after the controversial quarterback “declined to stop kneeling during the national anthem next season.” Yahoo’s Charles Robinson reported that he heard the same thing. According to the Seattle Times, Kaepernick told the team he didn’t know what his off-field activities would be in 2018, and team then decided to postpone his scheduled visit while officials discussed how to handle the matter. The Seattle Times report added that Kaepernick still could be brought in for a visit, but the club wanted “assurances of his commitment to football.” (TWP)

Bryce Harper went viral Wednesday, and it had nothing to do with a Nationals game. The star right fielder was shown blowing and sculpting his hair with a blow-dryer in each hand in a video posted to Twitter by his brother Bryan. NBA PLAYOFFS PREVIEW
Free fall offers few answers
Wizards vs. Raptors series schedule
Coach Scott Brooks has been criticized for watered-down offensive schemes during his team’s slide.
Game 1: 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Toronto, ESPN Game 2: 7 p.m. Tuesday in Toronto, NBA TV Game 3: 8 p.m. April 20 in Washington, ESPN2 Game 4: 6 p.m. April 22 in Washington, TNT Game 5*: April 25 in Toronto Game 6*: April 27 in Washington Game 7*: April 29 in Toronto *If necessary, times TBD
NBA PLAYOFFS For forward Markieff Morris, tough losses by the Wizards have recently been followed by upset phone calls. “What the hell are y’all doing?” starts the interrogation from his twin brother Marcus, a forward for the Celtics, who enter the NBA playoffs with the second seed in the Eastern Conference. The siblings wanted no part of becoming rivals in a first-round playoff series, but with the Wizards plummeting down the conference standings for more than a month, they worried a meeting was coming. By losing 13 of their last 20, Washington (43-39) wound up with the No. 8 seed, setting up an opening matchup with top-seeded Toronto. Marcus Morris’ question, however, still reverberates around the East: What’s wrong with the Wizards? Washington was once as high as fourth in the standings despite the absence of All-Star point guard John Wall. Last week, a season-worst four-game losing streak culminated with an “embarrassing” effort — in coach Scott Brooks’ words — against the Hawks, the last-place team in the conference. The most simple explanation from players is that they are drained from a long season played mostly without Wall. “Sometimes we have mental
lapses,” Morris said. “In my personal opinion, we felt sorry for ourselves a little bit.” The most startling reason, Brooks has said, is “selfish” play. Bradley Beal agreed. “It’s getting back in transition, which is something I’m terrible at,” Beal said. “Blow-bys and helping your man, switching the right way, communicating and talking. So there’s a lot more than just not passing somebody the ball in terms of selfishness.” A more specific reason has been Brooks’ offensive scheme without Wall, which has been described as dressed down and easy for opponents to figure out. “I felt like they had already shown what works for them and it appears that they have gotten away from it,” an official from another Eastern Conference team said, “and I don’t know why.” On Jan. 27, Washington began a 27-game adventure without Wall, who needed eight weeks to rehabilitate his left knee. With the point guard sidelined, Brooks empowered Beal to be more of a playmaker and freed Morris to bully on the post. The adjustments worked. The Wizards started 10-4 with wins over playoff-bound Oklahoma City, Toronto, Indiana, Cleveland and Milwaukee. Over that stretch, the team averaged nearly 30 assists per game. The offense

Wall still attempting to reclaim chemistry After sitting out eight weeks to recover from left knee surgery, point guard John Wall made up for the lost time by averaging a double-double with 20.3 points and 12.5 assists in his last four regular-season games. The Wizards are also buoyed by the fact that, despite missing Wall for all four games against their first-round playoff opponent the Raptors, they split the regular-season series 2-2. But, as evidenced by an errant pass during a potentially game-tying possession near the end of a loss to the Cavaliers last week, Wall is still trying to rekindle chemistry with his teammates. He’s averaged 6.3 turnovers in the four games since his return. (TWP)
clicked but didn’t evolve, a longtime scout in the East said. “If you run the same things week in and week out and those things don’t change, those become stale,” the scout said. “The league doesn’t take that long to adjust.” Opponents recalibrated. Beal’s assist totals began dropping. Kelly Oubre, the third-year forward who floats between playing with the bench and starters, fell into a 3-point shooting slump and was criticized by Brooks for his defense. More than once, Brooks hinted at limiting the minutes of players who don’t defend. “We got to start guarding somebody and we got to start moving the basketball the way we’re capable of doing it,” Brooks said, after last week’s loss to the Hawks. “If we’re not going to do that, I’ll find five guys to do that.” Truthfully, Brooks will not touch his lineup. Center Marcin Gortat, despite his struggles against shooting bigs, will always take the opening tip. Beal admitted he’s loafed in transition, but he’ll play every significant minute. Brooks might demand better from Oubre but doesn’t have a player on the bench who can replace him. In spite of the false threats, Beal said the team “100 percent” still heeds Brooks. “He expects more out of us,” Beal said. “He has every right and he should expect more out of us.” CANDACE BUCKNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

WASHINGTONPOST.COM FANCYSTATS JOHN RAOUX (AP)
Bradley Beal, left, and the Wizards lost in Orlando when a win would’ve brought the 7 seed.
RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU
Perilous playoffs: Path looks bleak for cold Wizards The Wizards may have blown their playoff chances before first tip. Washington simply needed to beat an awful Orlando team in Wednesday’s season finale to become the Eastern Conference’s seventh seed and face the injury-depleted Celtics in the first round. Washington beat Boston 113-101 on Tuesday. Instead, Washington walked through the final minutes and lost to the Magic 101-92 to earn the eighth seed in the East and a first-round meeting with No. 1 seed Toronto. And
if Washington can somehow advance, they’ll likely face a familiar nemesis in LeBron James and Cleveland. If they get through the King, a young Philadelphia team that has won 16 straight to finish the season could await. Washington took a step back this season, and not just because John Wall missed 41 games. Coach Scott Brooks couldn’t re-energize the team down the stretch when losing 11 of the final 16, and five of their last six. They showed no spark against Orlando when their postseason plans came down to the last few minutes. Brooks is in the second year
of a five-year deal and is owed $21 million over the next three seasons, so his future won’t likely hinge on this postseason. Yet the team’s performance hasn’t reflected well on him. The recent lack of ball movement and selfish shot selection has shown that the Wizards are tuning out Brooks. Still, Tuesday’s win over Boston offered a glimpse of Washington’s playoff potential. The Wizards outscored the Celtics 61-47 in the second half while Wall went screaming down the court. Washington had incredible energy on both ends and dominated. If the Wizards play like that against the Raptors, they can win the series. Washington’s best hope for an upset is to steal a win on the road Saturday in Game 1. Toronto has lost nine straight playoff-series openers. Washington was 2-2 against Toronto this season, with Wall missing every game. The Wizards swept Toronto in the first round three years ago and should feel like they can win
this year with their best player back in the fold. All season long, Washington has played up to good teams and been at its worst against bottom-dwellers such as Orlando, which sat three starters in the second half. The Wizards won six fewer games in the regular season than the team that pushed Boston to a Game 7 in the second round last year, but they believe they can flip the switch to full intensity in the playoffs. History is working against them. A No. 8 seed hasn’t reached the NBA Finals since the Knicks in 1999. It doesn’t help that Otto Porter Jr. strained his right calf against Boston. Bradley Beal earned his first All-Star nod this year, but Wall is the key to the series. He averaged 27.2 points in the postseason last year. If he can produce similar results, the Wizards have a chance. Rick Snider has covered sports in Washington since 1978. Follow him on Twitter @Snide_Remarks
Most likely to go down in first round Since 2015, every No. 1 and No. 2 seed in the NBA playoffs has advanced to the second round. But this year, two No. 2 seeds are among the most likely to be upset, according to The Washington Post’s analytics. NEIL GREENBERG (4) Thunder vs. (5) Jazz 49% chance of an upset
Utah’s Rudy Gobert — the league’s best defender according to ESPN’s Real Plus Minus — gets to match up with a traditional center in Steven Adams, above, rather than a more athletic player who would drag him away from the rim.
(2) Celtics vs. (7) Bucks 44% chance of an upset
Kyrie Irving (knee) is out, and Marcus Smart (thumb) will miss most of the series. Boston outscored opponents by 10.2 net points per 100 possessions with those two playing, but that dropped to 1.8 when they sat.
(2) Warriors vs. (7) Spurs 42% chance of an upset
POINT GUARD HELP
Washington adds Ty Lawson
The Wizards have added point guard Ty Lawson to their playoff roster, the team announced Thursday. The 30-year-old attracted attention when he scored 55 points in a Chinese Basketball Association game in February. Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld cited Lawson’s scoring ability and playoff experience in a statement. Lawson last played 69 games for the Kings in 2016-2017. He’s averaged 12.7 points and 6.0 assists during his eight-year NBA career. (TWP) Wizards forward Mike Scott (NBA concussion program) stayed in Orlando on Thursday
Since Stephen Curry sprained his left knee in March, the Warriors have been outscored by 4.3 net points per 100 possessions. That margin was plus-9.7 with Curry, who’s a long shot to return in time for the first round.

Reduce Your Waste: A Diet Plan for an Eco-Friendly Life n my home, we don’t have much in the way of disposable, single-use products. Instead there are cloth napkins in a variety of colors and patterns, kitchen towels made from natural fabric, stainless steel water bottles, glass food storage containers, and lots of unpackaged food in attractive glass and ceramic jars. Oh, and a tiny, ȴve-gallon trash can. A few years ago, my husband and I decided to go on a “trash diet” to reduce the waste we produce in our home. We’ve made many small adjustments to how we manage our home, and now we ȴll that tiny, ȴve-gallon trash can roughly once a week. And, as with any diet, we don’t beat ourselves up when we fall short. We just try again the next week. We started with the obvious: reducing our trash. )irst, we made a stronger eort to remember our reusable grocery bags when we shop. Then, we invested in a few high-quality stainless steel water bottles that we ȴll with tap water and take with us when we travel. We also gave up napkins and paper towels cold-turkey, replacing them with cloth. It was a good start, but we wanted to go a little more extreme — well, a lot more extreme. We created our own diet plan by taking stock of all the products we consumed on a regular basis and identifying sustainable alternatives for each. We found three major categories of waste that we wanted to reduce and set a timeline for how we would tackle each one. Years later, we’re still on our diet, and we’ve discovered other ways it has improved our lives.
I
create your own Diet plan by taking stock of all the products you consume on a regular basis and identify sustainable alternatives for each.
Step One: Trash and Recycling The ȴrst step in our diet plan was to continue reducing our trash and recycling. We started with the remaining single-use items in our kitchen. Freezer bags, sandwich bags, disposable plastic containers, and cling-wrap were a little harder to let go of than napkins and paper towels. We slowly stocked up on glass and stainless steel containers and stopped replacing disposables when they ran out. Despite these changes, we realized we were still throwing away a lot of wasted food and food packaging. That’s when we knew that we had to shop more strategically. We began planning out our meals in advance and sticking to a shopping list each week. This helped us to plan portions better and buy more unpackaged food, both of which reduced our waste. Now, we buy more fresh produce, which is generally unpackaged, instead of canned or frozen, and we use mesh produce bags instead of the plastic ones provided by the store. Our grocery store stocks a lot of pantry staples like nuts, beans, rice, coee, and granola unpackaged from the bulk section. I ȴll up small fabric bags instead of using plastic containers. Of course, some things have to be in containers. In those cases, we consider how the item is packaged. Some stores and farmers markets sell milk in glass bottles that can be returned to the dairy for reuse. We purchase plain yogurt in a single, larger container and ȵavor it with granola, honey, and fresh fruit. For other items, we opt for glass and metal jars and cans because those materials can be recycled. These changes made the biggest impact on our waste output. Over time,
we got into a good routine with planning, purchasing, and storing our food, and now it is second nature. With a couple of exceptions, the small amount of food packaging we end up with is recyclable. We compost our fruit and vegetable scraps in a bin in our backyard. We store meat scraps in the freezer and eventually boil them into chicken and beef stock (which I no longer need to buy . 8nfortunately, raw meat packaging is often not recyclable and ends up in our trash can.
Step Two: Water
Water is a precious commodity. We need it to live, and there is a ȴnite amount of it. Wasting water goes beyond just wasting money. Most water on Earth is not suitable for drinking, so a lot of time and energy is dedicated to its collection, treatment, and distribution for human consumption and agriculture. To reduce our water use, my husband and I implemented a few simple strategies. First, anytime we steam vegetables for dinner, we use the remaining water on our houseplants after it cools. We also try to keep our showers short and don’t run the tap while brushing our teeth. Recently, we replaced several leaky faucets and bought a used rain barrel on Craigslist to collect rainwater for use outside. Instead of washing a few items at a time, we wait for a larger load before doing laundry. Also, we re-wear our jeans and work clothes a couple of times before laundering them — provided they are still clean and don’t smell, of course.
Step Three: Gas and Electricity There are three main energy sources in our home: gasoline for the cars and lawn mower, natural gas for our heat and stove, and electricity. First, we tackled our gasoline use by buying a couple of used bicycles on Craigslist. My husband bikes to work almost every day, weather permitting. We try to pick places we can walk to when we go out to eat. When running errands, we do our best to handle them all in a single day and plan an eɝcient route. When our gas-powered lawn mower broke a few years ago, we decided to sell it instead of repair it and put the money towards a non-powered reel mower instead. Inside the house, we set our thermostat cooler in the winter (around
and warmer in the summer (around . We got rid of electronics that we weren’t using very often (like our printer, dust buster, and even our microwave
and unplug small appliances when not in use. We also replaced many of our incandescent lightbulbs with /EDs and do our best to turn o the lights when we leave the room. No good diet is a “one size ȴts all” solution, and this one is no dierent. Anyone looking to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle must determine their needs and priorities, and what incremental, immediate changes are sustainable in the long term. I hope this plan serves as a good starting point. Q By Julie Snee for Apartment Showcase Photo: Dashu83 / Freepik

‘Truth or Dare’
A monster mashup
Giant gorilla flick ‘Rampage’ is funny enough and exciting enough — but just barely
FILM REVIEW No one is going to walk into “Rampage” looking for high art. Which is good, because no one will find it. Instead, what you will find is a largely by-the-book action movie loosely based on a video game, complete with a predictable script, thinly written characters and, in the latest example of a disturbing trend, one stomachchurning, misogynistic death. Also, there are giant animals. Davis Okoye (Dwayne Johnson) is a primatologist at a San Diego animal sanctuary, alongside a small team of scientists. His main buddy is George, an albino gorilla who can communicate via sign language, joke and flip the bird. He also understands English, although it’s unclear at what
level. At one point, after George pretends to menace a member of the team, Okoye says of his colleague, “He no laugh. He cry.” A few minutes later, referring to another gorilla, Okoye explains to George that “poachers killed [his] entire family.” It’s a bit inconsistent. George’s problems begin when he is hit by a piece of an exploded space station (the pre-explosion scene that opens the film is hold-your-breath suspenseful). Vials containing vaguely ominous “research” have fallen to Earth. That research, the work of a shady corporation, is part of a project called CRISPR. (In real life, that stands for “Clustered Regularly Inter-Spaced Palindromic Repeats,” also a

IN A NUTSHELL: A rogue genetic experiment gone awry mutates an intelligent gorilla (who shares a bond with a human scientist) into a creature of enormous size.
contender for Least Threatening Acronym Ever.) The substance rapidly evolves the DNA of its host, leading to aggression and substantial growth, and causing the affected animal — a wolf, say, or a crocodile — to take on aspects of other species. George remains pure gorilla. Again, inconsistent.
As the animals are drawn to Chicago, summoned by radio wave, Okoye and a former CRISPR scientist (Naomie Harris) set out to find the antidote, and stop the hellish creatures. The defining feature of “Rampage” is, of course, the creatures. George and the giant croc get the most bang for the CGI buck. The wolf is less well-defined, and therefore less impressive. But there’s a problem: It seems very little of the budget went to any other special effects. At times, “Rampage” almost hides its problems. It’s just funny enough, just exciting enough and just visually impressive enough. What it never is, though, is anything more than just enough. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

You are now leaving ‘Broad City’
Comedy Central’s “Broad City” will end with Season 5 early next year, the network says. “ ‘Broad City’ has been our baby and first love for almost 10 years,” stars and co-creators Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson said in a joint statement. “‘Broad City’s’ always had a spontaneous pace and feeling, and ending after Season 5 honors that spirit.” The pair have signed a first-look deal with Comedy Central to develop other shows. While on a hard-drinking spring break trip to Mexico, the college seniors at the center of this humorless horror flick jump into a game of Truth or Dare, which they discover — too late — is demonically possessed. We expect characters in horror movies to do dumb stuff, but they should at least be sympathetic. The privileged protagonists here are neither interesting nor likable. JANE HORWITZ (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
‘Lean on Pete’ R, 121 min.
There isn’t much story here: A 16-year-old kid (Charlie Plummer), distraught after the sudden death of his lackadaisical single father, runs off in search of his only other known relative. That journey of 1,000 miles or so is undertaken in the company of a worn-out racehorse, whose name lends the film its title. That’s it. And yet, it’s oddly riveting. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

Mystery theater: Take a chance on the unknown “This Moment in the ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Trailer Proves Beyond a Doubt That Loki Is Definitely Going to Die. And That He Might be Gay.’ ” So it’s a particular joy when a movie is a real surprise. It forces me to focus more, to interact with the film in the present rather than waiting for the mental nod of recognition I give when a line from the trailer drops. In this case, I found myself paying sharp attention to Ramsay’s lighting — a neon noir, similar to Nicolas Winding Refn’s style in “Drive” and “Only God Forgives.” What Phoenix’s gray-bearded face and schlumpy body say about the traditional role of a hero. How Ramsay implies violence, and what power that has when the implicit becomes explicit. That doesn’t mean I turn off my brain when I watch a movie I was familiar with before the lights went down; there’s always a level of engagement required. But sometimes ignorance is bliss. It means you’ve taken a chance on the unknown, which is harder and harder now that entertainment is catered more and more to the individual. So try this: Create a new Netflix profile. Joaquin Phoenix (“I’m Still Here”) was never really here.
‘You Were Never Really Here’ (R, 89 min.) DIRECTOR: Lynne Ramsay STARS: Joaquin Phoenix, Judith Roberts, Ekaterina Samsonov QUICK TAKE: Ramsay makes bold, counterintuitive choices, and the result is a drama that conveys a vivid sense of impending tension and dread. In many ways, though, it’s just a tarted-up version of “Taken,” however artfully she has deconstructed its pulpy contours. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

As my husband and I settled in to watch “You Were Never Really Here,” he asked what it was about. I said, “It’s about a disabled alcoholic writer, I think?” It is not about a disabled alcoholic writer. That is “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot,” which comes out later this year (and is actually about an artist). Instead, what we got was a story of a mercenary (Joaquin Phoenix) who hunts for missing girls and does very bad things to the people who took them. It’s the latest from writer-director Lynne Ramsay (2011’s “We Need to Talk About Kevin”), who has a real gift for taking the deeply disturbing and making it intriguing. It’s rare I get to go into a movie blind. First of all, I write a regular feature on trailers (turn to page 28 for this week’s installment!). Second, it’s part of my job to know who’s cast as what and who might be in what and was there really a hint that Luke Skywalker will appear in “Solo”? The fact that I exist on the internet means I glimpse trailers on Facebook, casting announcements on Twitter and BuzzFeed headlines like
documentary). Choose the seventh movie on the list — not because you heard a friend say it was good or because you’re pretty sure it got nominated for an Oscar one year, but because you have the chance to watch something unknown. There is something refreshing about being thrown into uncharted waters. Even if — and especially if — it means you have to swim a little harder. A tale of canine courage, companionship
The titular pooch in “Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero” doesn’t just save its owner’s life, but a whole Army regiment. Set during World War I, the animated film is based on the true story of a mutt that wandered off the streets and into the care of trainee Robert Conroy (voice of Logan Lerman). This movie is just appealing enough that many civilians with a soft spot for a stray will not hesitate to enlist. PAT PADUA (TWP) Page Six: Mariah Carey writing a memoir

FILM REVIEW Set in 1982 amid the chaos of Lebanon’s civil war, “Beirut” stars Jon Hamm as a former U.S. diplomat who, 10 years after leaving the country in the wake of personal tragedy, is called back to negotiate for the release of one of his erstwhile colleagues, a CIA operative who has been taken hostage by one of the area’s myriad and evermetastasizing factions. Directed by Brad Anderson (“The Machinist”) from a script by Tony Gilroy (“Michael Clayton”), “Beirut” is a tense, moodily stylish political thriller. It bears the stamp of each filmmaker, propelled by Gilroy’s instinctive knack for keeping a clear, coherent story in constant forward motion, and is executed with Anderson’s unfussy approach to visuals and character cues. Loosely based on the abduction of CIA station chief William Buckley by Hezbollah in 1984, “Beirut” never explicitly invokes the name of that group. Rather, it plays like a prequel to the events that would engulf the Middle East during that decade and beyond, as political interests and their proxies collided and triangulated with cynical and often tragic results. “Beirut” is an engaging, well-crafted thriller, offering a showcase not just for Hamm but for Rosamund Pike (playing his levelheaded handler) and an ensemble of terrific character actors. SUMMARY: After you’ve made a movie and two sequels, what do you do next? Prequel! The trailer, which reveals the origin of the one-night-only crime free-for-all, suggests the government had a hand in getting people to turn out. Which is weird, because no one would ever use the threat of violence as a political tool. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)
SUMMARY: Current Hollywood hot thing Timothee Chalamet continues his domination of indie cinema as a boy sent to Cape Cod for the summer. Instead of attending clambakes and buying overpriced T-shirts, he decides to become a drug dealer and have sex. Which will definitely make his “what I did on my summer vacation essay interesting. K.P.K.

@IZUH_, tweeting her reaction to an interview rapper Cardi B gave to New York City’s Hot 97. The discussion revolved around the backlash the Bronx MC has received since confirming she’s pregnant during her “Saturday Night Live” performance. The 25-year-old said, in part, “Why do I have to choose a baby or a career? ... I’m a grown woman.” Fans largely supported her intent to balance the two, with @_nicolecrystal_ tweeting, “She’s got a career, a fiance, and money, why y’all expect any less from her?”

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Friends fret over what card to send Khloe
‘If it’s a girl, I’ll name it Venus or Serena’ Prince William might have revealed the gender of his third child with wife Kate Middleton, due this month. According to The Mirror, the Duke of Cambridge was watching the Aston Villa soccer team Tuesday, when player Jack Grealish scored the winning goal. William reportedly told other fans watching, “I’m going to insist the baby is called Jack.” After a pause, he allegedly added, “Or Jackie.” (EXPRESS)
Khloe Kardashian gave birth to a baby girl early Thursday in Cleveland, TMZ reported. The baby is Kardashian’s first, and is shared with Cleveland Cavaliers player Tristan Thompson. The birth comes amid a torrent of tabloid speculation about the couple after surveillance video showed Thompson making out with other women. There has been no comment from either Kardashian or Thompson on the birth or on the rumors. People magazine reported that though Kardashian had planned to raise the baby in Cleveland, they are preparing to fly to Los Angeles, where her family lives. “Khloe just wants to be home,” a source told People. I make mistakes,” the mother of two said. “Going through the tantrum stages when they’re such little a--holes. And they choose the worst moments. It’s a lot for one person. But after six years of having my two nuggets, there’s not a day when I wish I hadn’t done this.” (EXPRESS)
According to multiple outlets, Gwyneth Paltrow is in Cabo, Mexico, this weekend for her bachelorette party, ahead of her wedding to Brad Falchuk. Page Six reported that Cameron Diaz booked a private jet for 12 celebrants, including designer Stella McCartney and several Goop employees. A source told E!
