Conscientious Florida women know that skin cancer is no joke
Residents of a neighborhood in Jackson, Miss., are confused by the bowls of mashed potatoes they’re finding on their cars, porches and mailboxes. Resident Jordan Lewis described the Belhaven neighborhood as a quirky one. “So we don’t know if someone is just playing a prank or if someone just had a lot of leftovers,” Lewis said. It’s unclear if anyone has eaten the potatoes, and residents haven’t alerted law enforcement. (AP)
An Indiana man is suing his parents for getting rid of his $29,000 porn collection. Last week, the man filed a lawsuit in Michigan, where he lived with his parents after a divorce. He says when he moved out 10 months later, they delivered his things to his home in Muncie, but 12 boxes of pornographic films and magazines were missing. His parents admit they dumped the porn, which included titles such as “Frisky Business” and “Big Bad Grannys.” (AP)
Authorities say three women who were applying suntan lotion in the nude at a Dade City, Fla., rest stop led police on a 21-mile chase, drove a car at a deputy and threatened another with a bat. When a deputy first approached the women Wednesday, they said they’d been staying with a relative but left after an altercation and had nowhere else to go. The Tampa Bay Times reported the women said they were “air drying” after washing up. (AP)

VIRGINIA A 17-year-old from Northern Virginia became the first teen to win the U.S. Women’s Chess Championship in nearly 20 years. “It feels pretty good. I never expected it would happen,” said Jennifer Yu of Ashburn. “It’s something you dream of but you never actually think you’ll do it.” Chess experts said Yu dominated the tournament, held in St. Louis last month, and clinched the national title with a round to spare — an achievement that puts her in elite company among the nation’s chess players. The top spot also came with $25,000 in prize money. “She blew the competition out of the water,” said Jennifer Shahade, a two-time U.S. women’s champion, who is a commentator and writer on competitive chess. “Her performance is one of the best I’ve ever seen in U.S. women’s championships. “Jennifer is basically playing at the professional, grandmaster level at just 17 years old.” The last teenager to win t h e U. Her parents, both scientists, said they did not focus too much on her performance until a coach told them about her talent. While juggling doing homework, running for exercise and playing piano, Yu said she still finds time to practice every day for at least an hour. Shahade described Yu as modest and hardworking, with an “incredible fighting spirit and tactic.” “If her opponent misses an opportunity, she pounces on it immediately,” Shahade said. At last year’s event, Shahade noted, Yu had a rough first half of the tournament, then was undefeated in the second half. “Usually if people do bad in the first half, they don’t come back,” Shahade said. “But she’s someone who has great character and realizes that every game is distinct.” Shahade added: “She’s mature beyond her years, and she’s super awesome.” DANA HEDGPETH (THE WASHINGTON POST)
The Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run was not actually 10 miles, Washington City Paper reports. The track was 9.96 miles — about 211 feet short. This negates the records of Stanley Kebenei, who had set the American 10-mile record at 46:00; and a course record of 50:42 set by Rosemary Wanjiru of Kenya. Race director Phil Stewart told City Paper: “I feel like we owe the running community an apology.” (EXPRESS)

More trouble for Silver Line
CHARLOTTESVILLE
Police data: Black people arrested at higher rates Figures released by the Charlottesville Police Department show African Americans made up over half of arrests in recent years for mostly petty crimes associated with drugs, recidivism and socioeconomic status. The Daily Progress of Charlottesville reported the police department recently released data covering March 30, 2014, to March 28, 2019. During that time, African Americans were nearly five times more likely to be arrested than any other race in the city, based on Charlottesville’s estimated 19 percent black population. African Americans made up 54.3 percent of all arrests in that period. (AP)
TRANSPORTATION The contractor building phase 2 of the Silver Line has identified another problem with the beleaguered project. This time it’s at the Dulles Airport station, where concrete pedestals designed to support the two-story structure’s glass walls and windscreens are cracking because they were built without proper internal reinforcement. The pedestals, which sit atop 20 concrete columns, are critical because they serve a dual purpose: They help anchor the glass walls on the station’s first level, as well as the glass windscreens that will be installed on its second level. This latest development adds to a lengthy list of problems the contractor, Capital Rail Constructors, must resolve before it can complete work on the $5.8 billion project. CRC was expected to wrap up its work in August, but the company said it is unlikely it will make that deadline. In its most recent monthly progress report, CRC told the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which is managing the project, that it expects to finish its work in February. The project is already 13 months behind schedule. Once complete, MWAA will turn the project over to Metro, which will manage and operate the rail line. The first phase of the project, which included five stations, opened in 2014. “CRC continues to evaluate the project to identify opportunities to improve the schedule and to minimize impact of unforeseen changes,” company officials said. Under its agreement with the airports authority, CRC, a joint venture between Bethesda-based Clark Construction Group and Kiewit Infrastructure, would face financial penalties starting in October for failing to complete

the project by August. Meanwhile, the company is still trying to find an acceptable fix for a problem that surfaced in September, when a review found that more than 400 concrete rail ties failed to meet project standards. Keith Couch, project director for CRC, downplayed the problems at the Dulles station, saying that officials are working to find a solution. He said the fact that the problems were discovered before the project was completed is a sign that the company’s quality control program is working. CRC’s inspections and quality control have come under criticism as the project’s problems have mounted. Project executive director Charles Stark characterized the issues at the Dulles station as a “workmanship problem.” CRC, which designed and built the pedestals, will be responsible for paying for whatever repairs are ultimately decided on. Chinese rail car warning Congress would approve 10 more years of critical federal funding for Metro, but only if the transit agency agreed to not buy its next generation of rail cars from China, legislation being proposed by the region’s senators stipulates. The move reflects an increasing backlash in Washington against China’s stateowned rail company, whose growing domination of the U.S. market has raised concerns that it could provide platforms for cyberespionage. The China Railway Rolling Stock Corp. is pursuing a Metro contract likely to exceed $1 billion to build up to 800 of its new 8000-series rail cars. (TWP)
pedestals were discovered in April 2018, but it wasn’t until November, when CRC began to remove the concrete to make repairs, that the extent of the problem was discovered, Stark said. Crews found that the pedestals

were not properly reinforced, leaving them vulnerable to cracking. Studs designed to secure the steel plates that would sit on top of the pedestals were bent. Documents obtained by The Washington Post through a public records request include a root cause analysis prepared by CRC, which determined both the design and instructions workers received in the field were confusing. “The root cause analysis performed by our quality control team identified multiple contributing factors, including field installation and design details that were misinterpreted,” Couch said The first phase of the Silver Line opened in July 2014, seven months late and more than $150 million over budget. Although ridership on the line has not met expectations, Virginia officials maintain that it is an important catalyst for development in Tysons and the Dulles corridor. Study to tackle traffic on parts of I-95 in Virginia The congestion on Interstate 95 in Virginia can be nightmarish, and any solutions are complex. It’s an issue that state transportation officials say they’ll tackle to try to ease the pain for people traveling the highway between Fredericksburg and D.C. The Free-Lance Star in Fredericksburg reported that the state will study how to solve the congestion. The study resulted from two resolutions this year sponsored by Del. Transportation officials said Thursday that tolls on the Francis Scott Key and Thomas J. Hatem Memorial bridges will go cashless this year. Starting in October, motorists will pay by E-ZPass or by “video tolling.” That’s when a photo is automatically taken of a car’s license plate and officials send a bill to the registered owner’s address. Two-thirds of undergraduate students who voted in the student government referendum

The vote comes at a time when reparations have been an issue nationally, promoted by some Democratic presidential candidates, and as a growing number of universities are exploring the role of slavery at their institutions. The measure was endorsed by 2,541 students and proposes a fee, starting with $27.20 per student for the fall 2020 semester, that would raise an

MARYLAND Publicly, there is no campaign to be the next speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates. But behind the scenes, Del. Maggie McIntosh appears to have it locked up. As of Friday, according to multiple people familiar with the effort, McIntosh had more than 51 Democrats pledged to support her quest to succeed longtime speaker Michael E. Busch, who died a week ago. That’s enough votes to win a majority of the 98-member Democratic caucus and, if tradition holds, deliver the speakership. If the Baltimore City Democrat wins what is shaping up to be a three-way leadership race, she would be the first woman and the first openly gay presiding officer in state history. McIntosh, 71, declined to comment on the vote-whipping, saying she would not discuss the speakership until after Busch’s funeral on Tuesday. For at least two years — since Busch’s 2017 liver transplant — she and other top lieutenants have maneuvered to wield the gavel he had held since 2003.

8 dead as severe storms sweep across the South WEATHER Powerful storms swept across the South on Sunday after unleashing suspected tornadoes and flooding that killed at least eight people, injured dozens and flattened much of a Texas town. Three children were among the dead. Nearly 90,000 customers were without electricity in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Georgia as of midday Sunday, according to poweroutage.us. Two children were killed on a back road in East Texas when a pine tree fell on the car in which they were riding in a severe thunderstorm Saturday near Pollok. At least one person was killed and about two dozen others were injured after a suspected tornado struck the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site in East Texas. In neighboring Houston County, the sheriff’s office said one person was killed in Weches. A tornado flattened much of the south side of Franklin, Texas, overturning mobile homes and damaging other residences, authorities said. Heavy rains and storms raked Mississippi into the night Saturday as the storms moved east. Roy Ratliff, 95, died after a tree crashed onto his trailer in northeastern Mississippi,

A Hamilton, Miss., resident kneels amid debris to search for belongings after a deadly storm moved through the area on Sunday.
Monroe County Road Manager Sonny Clay said at a news conference, adding that a tornado had struck. Nineteen residents were taken to hospitals. In Hamilton, Miss., 72-yearold Robert Scott said he had been sleeping in his recliner late Saturday when he found himself in his yard after a tornado ripped most of his home off its foundation. His 71-year-old wife, Linda, was in a different part of the house and also survived, he said. Mississippi State University’s 21,000 students huddled in basements and hallways as a tornado neared the campus in Starkville. A university spokesperson said
some debris was found, but no injuries were reported. The large storm system also caused flash floods in Louisiana. Authorities said 13-yearold Sebastian Omar Martinez drowned in a drainage canal after flash flooding struck Bawcomville. Separately, one person died when a car was submerged in floodwaters in Calhoun. As the storm moved into Alabama, a possible tornado knocked out power and damaged mobile homes in Troy. Near the Birmingham, Ala., suburb of Hueytown, a county employee died after being struck by a vehicle while helping clear away trees early Sunday. (AP)

‘This is not the ideal situation’
Child ER visits over swallowed objects on rise
IMMIGRATION President Trump wants to explore a twice-rejected proposal to send migrants to “sanctuary cities,” but that is not the preferred solution to fix the straining immigration system, the White House said Sunday. Press secretary Sarah Sanders said it was one of many options, though she hoped Congress would work with the president on a comprehensive immigration overhaul. The Trump administration is dealing with an ever-increasing number of Central American migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, an influx that has pushed the immigration system to the breaking point. Laws make it hard to quickly return Central Americans, and many of them spend years in the U.S. waiting for their cases to play out. Others claim asylum and wait just as long, living and working in the U.S. as they wait. “Sanctuary cities” are mostly left-leaning places such as New York City and San Francisco where laws prohibit local police and corrections officers from working with immigration officials to arrest and deport undocumented immigrants. Trump seized on reports last week of the proposal that sought to send migrants already detained to Democratic locations or transport migrants who have just crossed the U.S.-Mexico border
to sanctuary cities. Sanders said the idea would be to spread out the number of migrants so the strain would not be on “one or two border communities.” “The president likes the idea and Democrats have said they want these individuals into their communities so let’s see if it works and everybody gets a win out of it,” Sanders said. “Again, this is not the ideal situation.” Trump tweeted on Saturday evening that the U.S. had the “absolute legal right to have apprehended illegal immigrants transferred to Sanctuary Cities.” But the plan was already eschewed twice. People with knowledge of the discussions say it was first brought to the Department of Homeland Security from White House staff in November, and was again discussed in February but was put down after DHS officials reviewed it and found it was too costly, a misuse of funds and would be too timely. Those people spoke on condition of anonymity. The plan could make it more difficult for Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to arrest people facing deportation, because sanctuary cities do not work with ICE. The Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University announced last week that an analysis found immigrants in sanctuary cities are 20% less

White House hedges on proposal to send migrants to left-leaning ‘sanctuary cities’
The Trump administration is dealing with an ever-increasing number of Central American migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.
‘Oakland welcomes all’ President Trump on Saturday night singled out Oakland, Calif., Mayor Libby Schaaf, D, who criticized the proposed policy to relocate migrants to sanctuary cities as an “abuse of power and public resources.” On Twitter, Trump claimed Schaaf does not want detained immigrants to be released into her city. “It’s time to stop fanning hate and division, “ Schaaf replied. “Oakland welcomes all.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)
likely to be arrested out in the community than in other cities. Democrats criticized the White House proposal as a political stunt that used humans as pawns and would not work. “Look, you can’t threaten somebody with something they’re not afraid of,” said Gov. Jay Inslee
of Washington state, a candidate for president. “And we are not afraid of diversity in the state of Washington. We relish it.” The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., questioned the proposal’s legality. “This is again his manufactured chaos that he’s created over the last two years on the border,” Thompson said of Trump, adding that Democrats were more than willing to sit down and talk about immigration legislation. But Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., said sanctuary cities showed contempt for the law, though he didn’t know whether there were any legal concerns with transporting migrants to the locales. “I mean, maybe he’s just saying this to make everybody crazy,” he said of Trump. HEALTH The number of young children who went to U.S. emergency rooms because they swallowed toys, coins, batteries and other objects nearly doubled over 10 years, a new study says. In 2015, there were nearly 43,000 such visits among kids under 6, compared with 22,000 in 1995, according to the study published Friday in the journal Pediatrics. The increase “rang some alarms,” said Dr. Danielle OrsaghYentis, the lead author and a gastrointestinal physician at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Orsagh-Yentis noted that an increasing number of consumer products, such as TV remotes, use potentially dangerous button-sized batteries, which likely contributed to the increase. Her research team analyzed a nationwide database of nonfatal emergency room visits for children younger than age 6. Almost 800,000 children were treated during the study years after swallowing foreign objects. While 90% of treated children were sent home without hospitalization, severe internal injuries and deaths have been reported. Batteries and small high-powered magnets often marketed as desk toys for adults are among the most dangerous objects. When kids swallow more than one powerful magnet, the objects can attract each inside the intestines, boring holes into the abdomen. LINDSEY TANNER (AP)

Impasse in Sudan continues
Largest outbreak in nation’s history has killed more than 1,200
Military’s pledge of a civilian Cabinet unlikely to satisfy protesters
MADAGASCAR Babies wail as a nurse tries to reassure mothers who have come to vaccinate their children against a measles outbreak that has killed more than 1,200 people in this island nation where many are desperately poor. Madagascar faces its largest measles outbreak in history, with cases soaring well beyond 115,000, but resistance to vaccinating children is not the driving force behind the rise. Measles cases are rising in the United States and elsewhere, in part because of misinformation that makes some parents balk at vaccinating their children. In Madagascar, many parents want to protect their children but face a lack of resources. Only 58% of people on Madagascar’s main island have been vaccinated against measles, a major factor in the outbreak’s spread. Immunization rates for measles need to be 90% to 95% or higher to prevent outbreaks. On a recent day, the Iarintsena health center’s waiting room was full, with mothers sitting on the floor and others waiting outside in the overwhelming heat. Two volunteer nurses and a midwife tried to meet the demand. Nifaliana Razaijafisoa had walked 9 miles with her 6-monthold baby in her arms. “He has a fever,” she said. “I think it’s measles because there
SUDAN Sudan’s new ruling military council announced Sunday that it will name a civilian prime minister and Cabinet but not a president to help govern the country following the coup that removed longtime leader Omar al-Bashir. An army spokesman, Lt. Gen. Shamseldin Kibashi, also said in televised remarks that the military had begun to overhaul security organizations and would not break up demonstrations that have continued outside the military headquarters since Thursday’s coup.
Mothers wait to have their babies vaccinated against measles at a health care center in Iarintsena, Madagascar.
are these little pimples that have appeared on his face.” The nurse quickly confirmed it. “I’m so scared for him because in the village everyone says it kills babies,” Razaijafisoa said. The outbreak has killed mostly children under 15 since it began in September, according to the World Health Organization. By mid-March, 117,075 cases had been reported by the health ministry, affecting all regions of the country. This outbreak is complicated by the fact that nearly 50% of children in Madagascar are malnourished. “Malnutrition is the bed of measles,” said Dossou Vincent Sodjinou, a WHO epidemiologist in Madagascar.
Simply reaching a clinic for help can be a challenge. Many people in Madagascar cannot afford to see a doctor or buy medicine, and health centers often are understaffed or have poorly qualified workers. As a result, information about health issues can be unreliable. Some parents are not aware that vaccines are free, at least in public health centers. Madagascar’s health ministry has sent free medication to regions most affected by the outbreak. And late last month, WHO started a third mass vaccination campaign in Madagascar with the overall goal of reaching 7.2 million children aged 6 months to 9 years. “Immunization is not the only
strategy for the response to this epidemic,” Sodjinou said. “We still need resources for care, monitoring and social mobilization.” The country’s capital, Antananarivo, a city of 1.3 million, has not been spared. Lalatiana Ravonjisoa, a vegetable vendor in a poor district, grieves for her 5-month-old baby. “I had five children. They all had measles. For the last, I did not go to see the doctor because I did not have money,” she said. “I gave my baby the leftover medications from his big brother to bring down the fever.” Her child died, and Ravonjisoa said she blames herself. “I did not imagine for one moment that he was going to die,” she said. Algorithm predicts who’ll live and who’ll die
Computer science students at the Technical University of Munich have developed an application that scours the internet for data on “Game of Thrones” and uses an algorithm to predict which characters are most likely to survive to the end of the series’ final season. The results? Daenerys Targaryen has the highest chance of survival, at 99 percent, and Bronn was seen as the most likely to die next. EDUCATION The country’s only all-male historically black college will begin admitting transgender men next year, marking a major shift for the school at a time when higher education institutions are adopting more welcoming policies toward LGBT students. Leaders of Morehouse College in Atlanta said that its board of trustees approved the policy on Saturday. Transgender men will be allowed to enroll in the school for the first time in 2020. Students who identify as women but were born male cannot enroll, however, and anyone who transitions from male to female will not be automatically eligible to receive a degree from the institution. Morehouse officials hailed the move as an important step toward a more inclusive campus while affirming its mission to educate and develop men. “I think Morehouse having the courage to speak to issues of masculinity in today’s environment is important,” Morehouse College President David Thomas said. The policy also states that Morehouse “will continue to use masculine pronouns,” which it calls “the language of brotherhood.” Morehouse is an iconic college that counts the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and filmmaker Spike Lee among its alumni. It bills itself as the “college of choice for black men.” ERRIN HAINES WHACK (AP)

comment from opposition figures about the military’s announcement. Last Thursday, the military ended Bashir’s nearly 30-year reign and placed him under house arrest in the capital. Protesters fear that the military, which is dominated by Bashir appointees, will cling to power or select one of its own to succeed him. After the coup, the army appointed a military council that it says will rule for two years or less while elections are organized. Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan was sworn in Friday as head of the transitional council. He assumed that role after protesters objected to its being led a general seen as being too close to Bashir.

Tiger Woods celebrates in front of a raucous crowd Sunday at Augusta National.
Tiger’s masterpiece
THE MASTERS Fallen hero, crippled star, and now a Masters champion again. Tiger Woods rallied to win the Masters for the fifth time Sunday, a comeback that goes well beyond the two-shot deficit he erased before a delirious audience at Augusta National. Woods had gone nearly 11 years since he won his last major, 14 years since that green jacket was slipped over his Sunday red shirt. He made it worth the wait, closing with a 2-under 70 for a one-shot victory and setting off a scene of raw emotion. He scooped up 10-year-old son Charlie, born a year after Woods won his 14th major at Torrey Pines in the 2008 U.S Open. He hugged his mother and then his 11-year-old daughter Sam, and everyone else in his camp that stood by him through a public divorce, an embarrassing DUI arrest from a concoction of painkillers and four back surgeries, the most recent one just two years ago to fuse his lower spine. “ WOOOOOOO!!!” Woods screamed as he headed for the scoring room.

With his first major victory since 2008, Woods completes a lengthy comeback
Tiger Woods shot a 2-under 70 on Sunday to win his fifth Masters title.
“It’s overwhelming, just because of what has transpired,” Woods said. “Last year I was lucky to be playing again. At the previous year’s dinner, I was really struggling. I missed a couple of years not playing this great tournament. To now be the champion … 22 years between wins is a long time. It’s unreal to experience this.” When he won his first green jacket in 1997, Woods wrapped his arms around his father. “Now I’m the dad with two kids
there,” he said. He wanted his children to see him win, once saying they saw him only as a YouTube legend. “To let them see what it’s like to have their dad win a major championship, I hope it’s something they’ll never forget,” he said. Woods won his 15th major, three short of the standard set by Jack Nicklaus. It was his 81st victory on the PGA Tour, one title away from the record held by Sam Snead. “A big ‘well done’ from me to Tiger,” Nicklaus tweeted.
Man who placed $85K bet on Tiger Woods to win at 14-1 odds wins $1.19M
It was the first time Woods won a major when trailing going into the final round, and he needed some help from Francesco Molinari. The 54-hole leader’s tee shot on the par-3 12th tumbled into Rae’s Creek and he went on to double bogey. Six players had a share of the lead at some point on the back. With the final group still in the 15th fairway, there was a fiveway tie for the lead. And that’s when Woods seized control. The knockout punch was a tee shot into the 16th that rode the slope just by the cup and settled 2 feet away for birdie and a twoshot lead with two holes to play. Wood, 43, finished at 13-under and became the oldest Masters champion since Nicklaus won his sixth green jacket at 46 in 1986. “This is definitely, probably one of the greatest comebacks I think anybody’s ever seen,” Brooks Koepka said, before rattling off Woods’ total PGA Tour victories and 15 majors. Is Nicklaus’ record in play? “I think 18 is a whole lot closer than people think,” Koepka said. DOUG FERGUSON (AP)

NATS FALL AT HOME
MLB’s worst bullpen ERA gets worse The Nationals’ shaky bullpen allowed a tiebreaking, ninthinning run in a 4-3 loss to the Pirates on Sunday. Pittsburgh rookie Jason Martin drove in the winning run with a double off Wander Suero. In the bottom half of the ninth, the Nationals loaded the bases on a single, walk and a bunt single by Adam Eaton with one out. But Felipe Vazquez struck out Howie Kendrick and retired Anthony Rendon, above, on a flyball to end it. Washington entered the day with the worst bullpen ERA in the majors and it rose to 7.75. Starter Max Scherzer allowed three runs and seven hits while working a seasonhigh eight innings. He struck out seven. After an off day, Stephen Strasburg starts Tuesday as Washington begins a three-game series at home against San Francisco. (AP)

38-year-old becomes oldest defenseman to score a playoff OT goal NHL PLAYOFFS To understand what Brooks Orpik means to the Capitals, forward Tom Wilson suggests listening to the screams on the ice Saturday when Orpik was mobbed by teammates. “There’s really no better guy to
score an OT winner,” Wilson said. There’s also no one more unlikely on Washington’s roster to have scored the goal that lifted the Capitals to a 4-3 overtime win in Game 2 of this first-round series with the Hurricanes, which Washington now leads 2-0. But there’s really no one more seasoned for springtime glory — the reason the Capitals re-signed Orpik, 38, for one more year last summer, just one month after trading him in a

seven bruising hits. In Game 2, he got four more licks in, skated nearly 19 minutes and capped it all of with a one-timer off Evgeny Kuznetsov’s feed for his fourth goal in 151 playoff games. He is
the oldest defenseman in NHL history to score a playoff OT goal. “Orpy is a secret weapon,” captain Alex Ovechkin said. Considering Orpik’s last playoff goal was the Game 2 winner in the Stanley Cup finals, he’s not wrong. Orpik now has two postseason OT winners, which is two more than Ovechkin. “Everybody tries to get to a different level at this time of year,” Orpik said. “I know me personally, at my age, if I try to play at this level for the whole season, I’d be done halfway through the year. I hate to say I pace myself, but you’ve just got to play a little more conservatively, especially at my age.” ISABELLE KHURSHUDYAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The Islanders are on the cusp of just their second playoff series win in more than a quarter-century. Jordan Eberle scored for the third straight game, Robin Lehner stopped 25 shots and New York rolled to a 4-1 win over the Penguins on Sunday to take a 3-0 series lead. The Islanders, who allowed an NHL-low 196 goals during the regular season, have let in just five goals in three games. Pittsburgh needs a win in Game 4 on Tuesday to avoid being swept for the first time since the 2013 Eastern Conference finals against Boston. The winner of this series will play the winner of the Capitals-Hurricanes series, which Washington leads 2-0. (AP)
Cale Makar is about to jump from one postseason run straight into another. The 20-year-old defenseman signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Avalanche a day after his Massachusetts squad lost in the Frozen Four championship game. Makar, who’s from Calgary, could make his NHL debut today in Game 3 of a playoff series against the Flames. The series is tied 1-1. Makar was the fourth pick by Colorado in the 2017 draft. He recently won the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as college hockey’s top player after a season in which he had 49 points, including 16 goals, over 41 games. (AP)
Kyrie Irving and Marcus Morris each had 20 points, and the Celtics rallied in the second half to beat the Pacers 84-74 on Sunday to take a 1-0 lead in their first-round series. Al Horford added 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Gordon Hayward had 10 points. It was the first playoff game since 2017 for Irving and Hayward after each missed last year’s postseason with injuries. In the Western Conference on Sunday, Damian Lillard scored 30 points, Enes Kanter had 20 points and a career playoff-high 18 rebounds and the Blazers opened their playoff series against the Thunder with a 104-99 victory. ‘Bless This Mess’
Prophecy fulfilled: ‘Game of Thrones’ reflects our reality
Lake Bell and Dax Shepard play a New York couple who give up on life in the city and relocate to a Nebraska farm in the series premiere of this sitcom, co-created by Bell and “New Girl’s” Elizabeth Meriwether.
shred of righteous clarity so he can spice up a sermon. The TV critics who are as in the dark as anyone else. After all, how can something so long in the making, set so safely apart from our present reality, be misconstrued as topical? Usually I might agree — such analysis can be irritating or inaccurate. Yet it’s all there, isn’t it? The pointless political scheming in the face of climate change. Cutthroat grabs for power. Weapons of mass destruction. Vile expressions of racism and discrimination. Radicalized religious faith as a response to cultural upheaval. A massive wall providing what turns out to be a false sense of security. Fantasy isn’t always just a fantasy, not if the subtext is doing its job, establishing a mythology and rewriting some moral code. Those of us who watch “Game of Thrones” and sense relevance aren’t watching it wrong or trying too hard to see what isn’t there. You can arrive at this moment and realize, hey, maybe, this is us.

CRISIS AT THE NORTHERN BORDER
HBO AND GETTY IMAGES/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION
It’s too big now to just be a TV show, a diversion. Every couple of decades a great story comes along and grips us more tightly than all the rest, as HBO’s “Game of Thrones” has done. Thus, the common references become second nature (“Winter is coming”), major characters become ingrained (“Daenerys” autocorrects while texting) and everyone wants a personal piece of it, to talk about it in their own way. This includes asking what “Game of Thrones” has meant, what it stood for, what it brought to the viewers and what they brought to it. The only drawback to Sunday’s premiere of the eighth and final season of the magnificent “Game of Thrones” was the mania for interpreting it. The op-ed columnists clumsily reaching for a “GoT” metaphor in the surfeit of Democratic 2020 hopefuls. The preacher looking for a

Starring and co-created by comedian Ramy Youssef, the new series follows the titular character as he navigates life as a member of the carefree millennial generation and the more traditional Egyptian community.
3 ‘Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce’ Wednesday on Netflix
It’s no accident that the show of the decade has hinged so frequently on deception, lies, misinformation and power. Westeros is a deeply corrupt land where most of the population lives in the dark, unaware of what its rulers are really up to. At the end of Season 7, the sad hero Jon Snow (Kit Harington), explained his refusal to tell a lie, even a useful one: “When enough people make false promises, words stop meaning anything,” he said. “Then there are no more
answers, only better and better lies. And lies won’t help us in this fight.” I know it’s not supposed to be us, but with TV characters saying stuff like that in a politically distrustful era like this one, how can it not be? “Game of Thrones” could be as far away as you like, preoccupied with its own make-believe. It could also be eerily close, as near as you needed it to be.
This concert special looks back at Beyonce’s 2018 Coachella performance, which paid homage to historically black colleges, by diving into her creative vision behind the set. (EXPRESS)

Disney unveils latest plan for domination
Disney raised the curtain on its video steaming service Thursday night, announcing plans to roll out Disney+ on Nov. 12 in the U.S. at a price of $6.99 per month, or $69.99 per year. That’s well below the $13 monthly fee Netflix charges for its most popular plan. Disney+ original programming will feature two “Star Wars” series and three Marvel miniseries, including a show starring Tom Hiddleston, left, as Loki. The series “There She Goes” is remarkable television — a breathtakingly honest look at a family whose second child, Rosie, is born with a rare chromosomal disorder that causes learning disabilities and behavioral issues. Episode 1 opens with wordless moans — seemingly the sound of an infant in distress.
It is Rosie, now 9 and putting up a fight as her father tries to take her for an outing to the park. She breaks away from his grip, dashes into the street, lies on the pavement and refuses to budge. It is hard to watch such a painful moment. But it’s worth staying with the show, which is based on series creator Shaun Pye’s own family. “There She Goes” debuted in the U.K. last fall, and it begins streaming

caddishness whose wife, Em (Jessica Hynes), is due any day. After giving birth, Em knows something is wrong. In a wrenching monologue, she
speaks her dark inner truth: “I just want to love her, but I don’t know if I can.” It is clear that these two imperfect and exasperated parents do love their little girl. Making jokes is one way they cope, and Rosie turns out to be a jokester as well. She types a message on an ABC board that speaks in a synthesized voice. It begins: “I. Want. Daddy.” Seems like a setup for an expression of love. Then she finishes typing: “Go bye-bye.” Em says, as any mum would, “Well done, Rosie.” That praise goes for this TV show as well. “True story: When I was starting out in entertainment I was advised to take on a stage name that was more ‘ethnically ambiguous,’ like ‘Alexandra Reynolds.’” @ALEREYN0S0, actress Alejandra

He and Twitter users noted a double standard in minorities being told to change their names, while white actors with difficult monikers aren’t. Minhaj said: “If you can pronounce Ansel Elgort, you can pronounce Hasan Minhaj.”

@AMANDAPALMER, singer Amanda Palmer, tweeting her thoughts on women having access to safe and legal abortions, as well as her experience having three abortions. Her thread was in response to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signing into law the “heartbeat bill,” which bans abortions after only six weeks. In her thread, Palmer detailed how such abortion laws disproportionately affect poor women, women of color, LGBT individuals and others without the means to travel to states with more liberal abortion laws.
@ANNHUI, criticizing nutritionist and blogger Arielle Haspel’s “clean” Chinese restaurant Lucky Lee’s. Haspel says the food is for people who love Chinese but want it to be healthy and “not too oily.” The new eatery was immediately met with backlash, as Haspel’s language furthered stereotypes that traditional Chinese food is unhealthy and dirty.
“We as a people need to stop making [Tony Hawk’s] life so difficult. He gave us so much and doesn’t deserve this treatment.” @SAMLOZADA, joking about the skateboarder’s difficulty in renting a car. Hawk tweeted Sunday about going to a rental agency only to find that his reservation wasn’t listed. He then went to the front desk, where an agent recognized him and said he’d deleted Hawk’s name because he thought it was fake. Hawk often details instances of people telling him he looks like Tony Hawk, without realizing it’s really him.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are officially single after filing a judgment in court Friday, according to The Blast.
