The television was tuned to forecasters’ dire warnings of an impending storm when Greg Tomlyanobich heard a short burst from a tornado siren blare after midnight Sunday. Then silence. Then rumbling. The 52-year-old quickly grabbed his wife and grandson, hurrying them into the emergency cellar as debris whirled around their heads at their mobile home park in northwest Oklahoma. They huddled inside with about 20 other people before the tornado — among more than 100 reported to have swept across the nation’s midsection during the weekend — roared across the ground above, ripping homes from their foundations. “It scared the hell out of me,” Tomlyanobich said. The storm killed five people, including three children, and injured more than two dozen in Woodward, a town about 140 miles northwest of Oklahoma City. But it was the only tornado that caused fatalities. Many of the touchdowns raked harmlessly across

The center took the unusual step of warning people more than 24 hours in advance of a possible “high-end, lifethreatening event.” The storm system was weakening as it crawled east and additional tornadoes were unlikely, though forecasters warned that strong thunderstorms could be expected as far east as Michigan. In Kansas, a reported tornado damaged McConnell Air Force Base and the Spirit AeroSystems and Boeing plants in Wichita late Saturday. Secret Service Scandal May Grow Alleged misconduct by agents likely not first, says Rep. Issa

Where Innovation is Tradition

MWi^_d]jed A Secret Service scandal involving prostitutes in Colombia that has overshadowed President Obama’s diplomatic mission in Latin America probably isn’t an isolated incident, and the agency should ensure it doesn’t happen again, a leading House Republican said Sunday. California Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of a House investigative panel, said he wasn’t certain whether Congress would hold hearings on the misconduct. But lawmakers will be looking “over the shoulder” of the Secret Service, he said, to make sure that the agency’s method for training and screening agents isn’t endangering the nation’s VIPs. “Things like this don’t happen once if they didn’t happen before,”

EXWcW0 ;nf[Yj ?dl[ij_]Wj_ed President Obama said on Sunday he expects the investigation of Secret Service misconduct in Colombia to be thorough and rigorous, and that he will “be angry” if the allegations are true. The scandal involving Secret Service agents and prostitutes overshadowed Obama’s diplomatic work at a major summit this weekend in Colombia. The alleged misconduct took place before Obama arrived. (AP)

said Issa, who leads the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Eleven Secret Service employees are on administrative leave for misconduct and five service members assigned to work with the agency are confined to quarters amid allegations that a group of personnel partied with prostitutes before Obama arrived in Colombia for the weekend summit with Latin American leaders. Issa told CBS’ “Face the Nation” that lawmakers are trying to confirm the precise number of U.S. per-

sonnel involved in the scandal. He said the number could be higher than initially thought. Of primary concern, he said, was that agents who behave badly are vulnerable to blackmail and therefore risk the security of the president and others. “We have got to ask, ‘Where are the systems in place to prevent this in the future?’” Issa said. “It’s the reason that the investigation will not be about the 11 to 20 or more involved. It will be about how did this happen and how often has this happened before?” (AP)

Five years after the U.S. housing bust sent sales and prices plunging, the spring home-buying season is pointing to a long-awaited recovery. Reduced prices, record-low mortgage rates, higher rents and an improving job market appear to be emboldening many would-be buyers. Open houses are drawing crowds. A wave of foreclosures is leading investors to grab bargainpriced homes. And many people seem to have

concluded that prices won’t drop much further. In some areas, prices have begun to tick up. Interviews with more than two dozen potential buyers, sellers, brokers, Realtors and economists suggest confidence is up. “People feel much more confident,” said Steve Brown, co-owner of real estate company Irongate Inc. of Dayton, Ohio, who says sales jumped more than 16 percent for the first two months of 2012 over the same period last year. “There’s no question there’s a good feeling in the marketplace.” (AP)

Is Her Beautiful Smile Good Genes, Or Does She Have A Secret? A smile so natural, only her dentist knows for sure. Empowered Eating her favorite foods, free to travel and live the life she wants. Not afraid to laugh or get close to the ones she loves. Many peers have missing or failing teeth, some even have dentures. How does she do it?

Consider this: MYTH: Tooth loss affects a relatively small group of people. FACT:

By the age of 50, the average Americans is missing 4 or more teeth.

MYTH: Tooth loss is almost always a result of poor oral hygiene.

Odds Against Us Virtually every adult will lose a tooth in their lifetime. For many, the suffering doesn’t stop there. As we age, factors ranging from poor oral health to heredity often bring about accelerated tooth loss – so much so that the average American will lose 4 or more teeth by the time they reach 50 years of age.

Traditional Remedies Historically, alternatives to failing teeth often involved a lifetime of glues, creams and adhesives and often were accompanied by discomfort and changes in appearance – meaning the options for treating missing or failing teeth could do little to alleviate the physical and emotional discomfort of tooth loss.

FACT:

Oral hygiene is important, but genetics and age are significant drivers of tooth loss.

MYTH: Dental problems caused by gum disease and tooth loss resolve themselves quickly. FACT:

Most dental problems do not

“self-resolve”

and usually become worse with time. MYTH: Dentures are the only option for those dealing with tooth loss. FACT:

Dental implants look and feel like your natural teeth and are a modern alternative to dentures.

Dental Implants Dental Implants are now considered a “Standard of Care” when replacing missing teeth and are often a better treatment option than conventional dental crowns, bridges, partial and full dentures. Dental Implants have been proven to be a more successful long term option when compared to these more traditional approaches. The appeal of dental implants is very simple: implants look and perform like natural teeth and fit precisely without the need for adhesives. They are permanent and cared for just like natural teeth and restore one’s natural smile.

N. Korea’s Kim Asserts Priorities 1st speech by leader emphasizes military gains seen in nation

Newly in charge of a country where leaders are idolized but rarely heard from, Kim Jong Un on Sunday stepped onto a balcony in Pyongyang overlooking tens of thousands. He moved toward a podium affixed with seven identical microphones. And then he spoke. The young North Korean leader, in his first public address, told a packed crowd that he would follow the legacy of his father and grandfather and prioritize the country’s military strength. “Superiority in military technology is no longer monopolized by imperialists,” Kim said, reciting points emphasized in Pyongyang’s propaganda, saying he wouldn’t be intimidated by for-

Solemn Moments Mark Titanic’s 1912 Sinking 7XeWhZ CI 8WbcehWb

H;B?=?ED

Ij_bb =e_d] Ijhed] Pope Benedict XVI prayed Sunday for strength as he marks two milestones this week: his 85th birthday Monday and the seventh anniversary of his papal election. The comments were a clear sign that Benedict, who will soon be among the few popes to reign past age 85, has no intention of resigning soon. (AP)

LEFTERIS PITARAKIS/AP

With prayers, a hymn and a moment of silence broken by a ship’s whistle, those on a memorial trip marked 100 years to the moment since the Titanic sent more than 1,500 people to a watery grave. In the North Atlantic, passengers lined the decks of the MS Balmoral, a cruise ship that has been retracing the Titanic’s doomed route from England to New York, as the ship stopped Sunday at the spot where the Titanic sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912. After a service and a moment of silence, three floral wreaths were cast onto the waves as the ship’s whistle sounded.

A memorial cruise passed over the Titanic’s watery grave in Atlantic early Sunday.

“You look down over the side of the ship and you realize that every man and every woman who didn’t make it into a lifeboat had to make that decision, of when to jump or

stay on the ship as the lights went out,” Jane Allen, of Devon, England, whose great-uncle perished on the Titanic, said of the moment. A century on, events around the

Syria’s Fragile Truce Erodes With Attacks

It isn’t every day you can spot a space shuttle over the Washington area.

Initial U.N. team begins mission to monitor cease-fire

On Tuesday, April 17, the Space Shuttle Discovery is expected to fly over the area on its way to Dulles International Airport. Destined for the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, the shuttle may cause a few heads to turn. For motorists, the Museum recommends Safe Driving Tips for

Spotting the Shuttle, provided by AAA:

Syria’s four-day-old cease-fire appeared to be quickly eroding Sunday, with regime forces firing dozens of tank shells and mortar rounds at neighborhoods in the opposition stronghold of Homs, hours before the arrival of a first team of U.N. truce monitors. Though the overall level of violence has dropped, escalating attacks over the weekend raised new doubts about President Bashar Assad’s commitment to a plan by special envoy Kofi Annan to end 13 months of violence and launch talks on Syria’s political future. Assad’s compliance has been limited. He halted shelling of rebel-held neighborhoods, with the exception of Homs, but ignored calls to pull troops out of urban

Don’t let anyone or anything—even a space shuttle overhead—distract you. For safe shuttle-spotting, pull off the road and park your car. Do not text or share your impressions on your cell phone until you have parked in a safe spot. As always, drive defensively to avoid distractions from pedestrians or other motorists. For great gathering places to spot the shuttle, visit the Museum’s web site. A Day That Changed Va. Tech 5 years later, experts say another massacre is extremely unlikely H_Y^cedZ" LW$ Five years ago, Virginia Tech student Seung-Hui Cho had begun his mission of indiscriminate mass murder after leaving numerous vivid signs of his madness. In the reckoning afterward, investigations identified many points along Cho’s psychological disintegration where intervention might have averted the wideawake nightmare of April 16, 2007 — the worst mass-shooting in U.S. history. Today, with the benefit of hindsight and substantial legislative reforms, could someone else commit the same atrocity that Cho did when he shot 32 people dead and then killed himself as police closed in? Two of Virginia’s most experienced law enforcement experts say it’s extremely unlikely, but impossible to rule out in a free society. It’s a question that haunts the unguarded corners of Col. Steve Flaherty’s mind every day. The carnage he saw in Norris Hall — cell phones ringing in the pockets of slain students and faculty who would never answer them — is still unsettling and unshakable. “It’s the most horrific sight of my life,” Flaherty, a career lawman and superintendent of the Virginia State Police since 2003, said barely above a whisper in a Friday telephone interview. Everyone in Virginia changed a little that day, not just Flaherty. Not only do people remember where they were, what they were doing and whom they were with when they heard of the attack, it rocked basic assumptions about when and where they’re really secure, said Flaherty’s retired predecessor as head of the state police, W. Gerald Massengill.

I^eej[hÊi H[YehZ Ib_ff[Z J^hek]^ SEUNG-HUI CHO never should have been able to buy the two handguns he used to carry out his execution-style killings from licensed gun dealers. Because a court had ordered him to undergo mental health testing, his name should have appeared in a database licensed gun dealers use to vet the backgrounds of firearms purchasers. His name was not there. Then-Gov. Tim Kaine ordered an administrative fix to that problem, and the General Assembly wrote it into state law in 2008. Cho started showing behavioral problems two years before the shootings.

“It’s like America before 9/11 and America after 9/11. Virginia since April 17, 2007, is different from Virginia on the morning of April 16, 2007, and before,” said Massengill, who headed a blue-ribbon panel appointed to review the killings and recommend reforms. Now, Virginia’s publicly supported colleges and universities are required by law to have teams that investigate the academic, medical and criminal records of troubled students such as Cho and establish rules and regimens for dealing with them. Virginia Tech’s deaths, to be mourned at a campus candlelight vigil Monday, were not in vain, Fla-

herty said. It’s cold comfort to Beth Hilscher. Her daughter, Emily Jane, a 19-yearold freshman, was among Cho’s first victims, shot dead in her dormitory early that morning alongside Ryan Clark, a fellow Hokie who rushed to her aid. “Could it happen again? Sure it could. It just happened last week in California,” she said Friday. “Even if everything else had gone right at Virginia Tech the rest of the day on April 16, 2007, it would have been a bad day for Emily and Ryan,” Hilscher said. “But there are still students who have mental illness and who are still being ignored.” BOB LEWIS (AP)

A Taliban Show of Force Militants unleash a wave of attacks in retaliation for NATO comments

C[Wdm^_b[ $$$ Taliban militants battled their way into a prison in northwest Pakistan on Sunday, freeing close to 400 prisoners, including at least 20 inmates described by police as “very dangerous” insurgents, authorities and the militants said. More than 100 fighters participated in the predawn raid in the city of Bannu, which is close to the Afghan border, in a dramatic display of the strength of the insurgency gripping the nucleararmed country. The prison, which houses 944 inmates, is the main facility used by Pakistan to detain the scores of Taliban militants who are arrested in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. (AP)

Taliban insurgents struck the heart of the Afghan capital and three eastern cities Sunday, firing automatic weapons and grenades at embassies, government buildings and NATO bases as they launched the spring fighting season with the boldest and most complex assault in years. The multipronged attacks show the Taliban and their allies are far from beaten and underscored the security challenge facing government forces as U.S. and NATO forces draw down. The majority of international combat troops are scheduled to leave by the end of 2014. Fighting continued more than 12 hours after the first blasts, leaving 31 people wounded. One police officer and 17 militants were killed in the fighting. The attacks were the most widespread in Kabul since a September assault on the U.S. Embassy and NATO headquarters that was blamed on a Pakistan-based group allied with the Taliban. T he sophist icat ion a nd firepower of the latest strikes, as well as the high-profile targets, bore the hallmarks of the fall attack.

NATO soldiers run Sunday during a gun battle in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said dozens of attackers were sent in an assault that had been planned for two months to show the extent of the insurgency’s power after NATO commanders called the Taliban weak and said there was no indication they were planning a spring offensive. “We are strong and we can attack anywhere we want,” Mujahid said, calling the attacks an opening salvo ahead of the spring offensive, when warmer weather typically brings increased attacks.

Gunfire erupted soon after. Mohammad Nahim Lalai Hamidzai, a lawmaker from Kandahar, said he climbed the tower of the parliament building and fired “up to 400 or 500 bullets” on the insurgents. The assaults were the latest blow to an international effort that has been on edge for months as distrust grew between international and Afghan forces after the release of a video purporting to show Marines urinating on Taliban corpses, as well as the burning of Korans at a U.S. base and an attack by a U.S. soldier that killed 17 Afghans. Those tensions had appeared to be subsiding in recent weeks and the relatively quiet start to spring had brought hope: a deal governing night raids, talks with the Hizb-iIslami insurgent group and the appointment of a new head to the High Peace Council, which is trying to negotiate with the Taliban. That quiet was shattered Sunday. U.S. Marine Gen. John Allen, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, said the coalition was standing by to support the Afghan forces if needed, but had not been called in. However, some international forces, NATO troops embedded in Afghan units as trainers or mentors, could be seen taking part in operations in Kabul. HEIDI VOGT AND R AHIM FAIEZ (AP)

Capitals goalie Braden Holtby stops a shot by the Bruins’ Brad Marchand in Game 2 of their playoff series. Holtby has allowed two goals in two games in the postseason.

It’s Back to Square One Surprisingly patient Capitals frustrate Bruins in tied series J^[ 9Wf_jWbi Braden Holtby isn’t the only eyebrow-raiser for the Capitals so far in the playoffs. Get a load of this statement made by Boston Bruins coach Claude Julien: “They play a patient game.” Patient? The Capitals? When’s the last time anyone said that? Yes, there is a high-scoring team getting frustrated by tight checking in the Bruins-Capitals first-round series, but the role that has been played by Washington in recent postseasons now belongs to Boston. The defending Stanley Cup champions were second in goals-pergame with 3.17 in the regular season, but it’s taken two games with

three overtimes for both teams combined to surpass that total. After hosting a 1-0 single-overtime win in Game 1 and a 2-1 double-overtime loss in Game 2, the Bruins travel to the nation’s capital for Game 3 on Monday night and Game 4 on Thursday night. They

spent Sunday’s off-day comparing the Capitals to — of all teams — the Tampa Bay Lightning, who are notorious for clogging up the neutral zone. “It’s something that we’re probably not used to seeing from Washington because it was not that same type of hockey that they played

For nearly three months this season, the Capitals talked about the team they could be with a healthy Nicklas Backstrom in the lineup. In Game 2 against the Bruins Saturday night, Backstrom came through and delivered the gamewinner in double overtime. In addition to the goal, Backstrom finished with four shots on goal, one hit, three blocked shots and an 11for 19 success rate in the faceoff circle in 30:03 of ice time, looking in top form. (T WP)

before ... more of an up-tempo and more of offense going,” Julien said. “Right now they’re just sitting back when we have the puck in full control of it, and they’re just waiting for their chances.” The change didn’t happen overnight. Former coach Bruce Boudreau tried to get the Capitals to be more defensive-minded a year ago, and Dale Hunter has rammed the point home since replacing Boudreau in November. Still, it’s a bit jarring to think of a team that features Alex Ovechkin, Alexander Semin, Nicklas Backstrom and Mike Green as “patient” — and content to win low-scoring, one-goal games. “It’s pretty funny that that’s what we’re getting now,” defenseman Karl Alzner said. “You can see going back to last year we’ve slowly been trying to work that into our game. We went from com-

plete opposite ends of the spectrum where we just wanted to go the entire time, and it just wasn’t working out for us. It’s been a long transition, about a year and a half trying to get to that, but it’s nice that we can be referred to as that and get the job done patiently.” So the Caps are feeling good about their road split even though Ovechkin has one assist and no goals through two games. Semin doesn’t have a point, but he uncharacteristically gave himself up to block Zdeno Chara’s shot in the first overtime Saturday. “Alex isn’t one to do that all the time,” Green said about Semin, “but when he shows that he can do that and he’s willing to do it, it brings us all up.” The Capitals’ defensive tenacity has kept the Bruins from getting solid chances. None of Boston’s top seven point-scorers in the regular season has dented the score sheet thus far in the series. “I think we may have frustrated them a little bit,” Washington forward Matt Hendricks said. “I think that they look at their team as a little bit more offensive. To keep to one goal each game is good for us, but we need to keep that going.” JOSEPH WHITE (AP)

In baseball terms, the first Roger Clemens trial was a rainout in the top of the first inning. Not because it actually rained, but because one of the teams turned on the sprinkler and left it running. Only two witnesses had been called last July when U.S. Judge Reggie Walton declared a mistrial, famously declaring that prosecutors had made a gaffe that even a “first-year law student” wouldn’t make. It was a courtroom humiliation even a baseball fan would understand. It’s been a nine-month wait for the makeup date. The case of United States vs. William R. Clemens was set to return to court Monday with the start of jury selection in the second attempt by the government to prove that the seven-time Cy Young Award-winning pitcher lied when he denied, in an appearance before Congress in 2008, using steroids and human growth hormone. To help make sure there’s

JWa[ Jme The basics of the Roger Clemens case remain the same. The government’s key witness is Clemens’ former strength trainer, Brian McNamee, who says he injected the superstar pitcher with performance-enhancing substances and held on to some used needles that will be entered as scientific evidence. Clemens will be doing what he can to clear his name from allegations that the backside of his remarkable 24-year, 354-win career was the product of something more than an intense fitness regimen. The trial is expected to last four to six weeks. (AP)

not another misstep, the Justice Department now has five lawyers on the prosecution team, up from two at the first trial. “They bulked up their team,” said Washington lawyer Stan Brand, who represented Major League Baseball in connection with a 2005 congressional investigation into the sport’s steroids policies. “They’re going belt-to-suspenders so they don’t make any mistakes.” (AP)

He’s in town to plug his debut album, “Pluto,” out Tuesday, a collection of street-corner narratives Auto-Tuned into warbly, melodic, bigtent sing-alongs. Three of them occupy the radio waves — “Magic,” “Same Damn Time” and “Tony Montana” — placing Future in a domino-chain of rap stars who have smeared the line between rhyming and singing. (Think: Andre 3000, Kanye West, Drake.) He’s also the latest in a series of next-big-things from Atlanta, the hiphop hotbed that refuses to cool. “I feel like I’m doing something in

collective that includes OutKast and Cee Lo Green. When Future finally summoned the courage to get behind a microphone, he was embraced. “I was, like, 17,” he says. “Everyone’s saying, ‘You’re the future of the Dungeon, you’re the future of the Dungeon. Future, future, future.” Future. It quickly replaced Meathead, the nickname that had replaced his birth name, Nayvadius Wilburn. Future broke onto national airwaves on rapper Y.C.’s 2011 summer anthem “Racks.” But Future wasn’t just rapping — he was singing the hook, too. It was a lightbulb moment: “People respond to something melodic.” Now, instead of taking cues from his peers, Future watches concert footage of pop singers. “They got 50,000 people in the stadium and they got everyone singing along,” he says. Those pop smarts are likely what motivated L.A. Reid to sign Future last year. The rapper knows he’s joining an elite roster, but doesn’t feel pressure so much as a sense of possibility. “In Atlanta, there’s no limitation to where you can take your music,” Future says. “You can be as creative as you want to be.” CHRIS RICHARDS (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Some of us were lucky enough to see James Brown convulse across a stage during his 73 years on Earth. Few of us were lucky enough to see him jump off a stage and into a swimming pool. At a 2006 concert in Tbilisi, Georgia — more than 6,000 miles from the Georgia that Brown called home — the “Godfather of Soul” performed on a stage erected on the lip of an Olympic-style pool. During the crescendo of “Sex Machine,” Brown plunged into the chlorinated deep. Splash. Band members who dived in to fish him out were each paid a $200 bonus. Brown died on Christmas Day that year, a showman to the end. The dive is one of many passages detailed in R.J. Smith’s “The One” ($27.50, Gotham), a superb new biography of a tireless entertainer who spent decades tightening his grip on the boundless energy he radiated. While investigating the hardest-working man in show-

biz, Smith breaks a sweat of his own. This is a meticulously researched book that tracks Brown’s childhood in the segregated South, his rise as a musical innovator, his connections to a handful of U.S. presidents and his golden years, tarnished by debts and drugs. Like Brown’s music, Smith’s writing is both airtight and full of life, conversational and reflective. Brown once said that he came

B_a[ 8hemdÊi cki_Y" Ic_j^Êi mh_j_d] _i Xej^ W_hj_]^j WdZ \kbb e\ b_\[" Yedl[hiWj_edWb WdZ h[Ô[Yj_l[$ into this world silent, motionless and “stillborn” — resuscitated by an aunt who blew breath into his lungs. Smith seizes on this fantastic entrance: “One good thing about believing you were born dead is you come to feel nothing can kill you.” Smith quotes Brown sparingly throughout the book, as if doggedly chasing after this tornado of a man. He knows Brown’s incredible story is best told by the people, the music and the zeitgeist that surrounded him — and what was left in his wake. CHRIS RICHARDS (THE WASHINGTON POST )

NIH is studying a novel medication for rapid antidepressant response and its effect on memory & attention using neuroimaging.

NIH researchers seek currently depressed persons ages 18-55 to enroll in research studies evaluating how an FDA-approved drug, Scopolamine (for motion sickness) versus placebo can help with depression. In one study,

the drug is given intravenously over 7-sessions (inpatient or outpatient), in the other the drug is given by patch over 12 sessions (outpatient). Participants must not be taking medications for three weeks prior to starting the study.

The studies are conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and may include brain imaging and attention and memory tasks to help understand the role of some brain chemicals in depression. There is no cost to participate and travel is reimbursed. Atendemos pacientes de habla hispana.
