A village in the Netherlands had to scrap a “singing road” two days after it was installed, as residents complained the endless music was driving them nuts, The New York Times reported Thursday. The village, Jelsum, installed musical strips in lieu of “rumble strips” on a road near town. When drivers veered onto the shoulder, the strips “played” the regional anthem. Residents hated the noise, and Jelsum was forced to scrap the strips. (EXPRESS)

page three Underground play digs deep THEATER You’d think a play centered on the world of Metro would have all the dramatic trappings of a Shakespearean tragedy, or perhaps a cutting French satire — riffs on delayed trains and the frustrations of single-tracking, and macabre jokes about track fires and derailments. But “Use All Available Doors,” which opened Friday at the Dupont Underground subterranean arts space, takes a more nuanced approach. The interior of a rickety old Metro train serves as the backdrop to a varied display of human emotions — where people fall in and out of love, commit random acts of kindness and spark bizarre altercations. Riders grapple with their angst over American politics and reckon with their own loneliness or existential quandaries. “This play takes something that you do every day — riding the Metro — and it makes it special,” said Toni Rae Salmi, the show’s director. “It makes it art.” T h e pl ay, wh ic h S a l m i

Nats want more local bars to air their games The Washington Nationals have heard fans’ cries about broadcasts at local bars and restaurants, and they have an answer. On Friday, the team announced the Curly W Restaurant and Bar Alliance, a promotional group that bars and restaurants can join in exchange for perks for patrons. Eateries can join the alliance if they have at least one television and pledge to show every Nationals game, according to the announcement. In exchange, the ballclub will provide a “bar kit” of decorations and fan handouts. (TWP)

Teachers union gives candidate a huge boost in Md. governor’s race MARYLAND POLITICS Maryland gubernatorial candidate Ben Jealous has picked up the endorsement of the state’s largest teachers union, adding to the list of high-profile supporters backing him in the crowded Democratic primary. The support from the Maryland State Education Association, which has often been in the crosshairs of Gov. Larry Hogan, R, is a huge boost for Jealous, who is making his first run for public office. The endorsement from the 74,000-member union is one of
the most coveted in Democratic politics. “Our children need a new Maryland Promise that no matter their neighborhood, the state will make sure there’s a strong public school in their community,” union President Betty Weller said in a statement. “Ben Jealous is the candidate with the values, the vision, and the coalition-building skills to make that promise a reality.” Union officials said educators were inspired by Jealous, whose parents were public school educators, and by his vision. Jealous was the first candidate in the race to call for the state’s share of casino money to be spent on public schools. The former NAACP president also has called

Jealous received 85 percent of the vote — well above the 58 percent needed to secure the endorsement — from more than 300 delegates representing educators from across the state during the union’s Spring Representative Assembly on Saturday. The union plans to hold an event this week to formally announce the endorsement. Jealous has also won endorsements from the 45,000-member Service Employees International Union; Maryland Working Families; and Our Revolution. He is one of eight candidates vying for the Democratic nomination, hoping to face Hogan in November. The Maryland primary is June 26.

Statue of Jefferson defaced at U-Va. CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. The words “RACIST + RAPIST” were painted on a statue of Thomas Jefferson at the University of Virginia on Friday, the day the school commemorates its founder each year. This year marks the 275th anniversary of his birth. Jefferson has become a fraught symbol as the university delves more deeply into its own complicated history, and as broader cultural battles play out nationally and locally over monuments and race. Jefferson — the main author of the Declaration of Independence, third U.S. president and founder of the public university — is believed to have had children with a woman who was enslaved on his plantation. A statue on the university’s Lawn of a seated Jefferson was painted with graffiti on a day typically used to honor Jefferson’s contributions. It’s when the university and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello award the school’s highest external honors, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medals in Architecture, Law and Citizen

Starbucks on defensive over arrest of black men

CEO apologizes after store manager calls 911 on pair awaiting friend

PHILADELPHIA Starbucks, which once asked baristas to start a conversation about race with customers, is facing fierce criticism after two black men were arrested Thursday at a Philadelphia store, sparking accusations of racial profiling over what the company’s chief executive now calls a “reprehensible” incident. In a statement, CEO Kevin Johnson offered “our deepest apologies” on Saturday to the two men who were taken out of the store in handcuffs by at least six officers on Thursday. A store manager had asked the two men to leave after they attempted to use the bathroom but had not made any purchases, police said. The men said they were waiting for a friend, their attorney later said. The manager then called 911 for assistance, the company said. The police confrontation was captured on a video that has been viewed more than 8 million times on social media, fueling a backlash and drawing responses from the city’s police commissioner and mayor. “I am heartbroken to see Philadelphia in the headlines for an incident that — at least based on what we know at this point

— appears to exemplify what racial discrimination looks like in 2018,” Mayor Jim Kenney, a Democrat, said. The two men were taken to a police station, where they were fingerprinted and photographed, their attorney Lauren Wimmer told The Washington Post on Saturday. Her clients, who declined to be identified, were released eight hours later because the district attorney found no evidence of a crime, she said, adding that the Starbucks manager was white. Wimmer said the man whom the two men were there to meet,
and a longtime supporter, ripping into President Trump on Friday after Trump announced a strike on Syria. Jones has long believed and promoted a conspiracy theory that chemical attacks in Syria are false flags designed to manipulate the U.S. into war. In a livestream, Jones went into an extended, often vulgar monologue in which he tried to convey just how upset he was by Trump’s decision, saying, “I just feel like I just had my best girlfriend break up with me.” He eventually yelled, “F--- Trump.”
Andrew Yaffe, runs a real estate development firm and said Yaffe wanted to meet the men to discuss business investment opportunities. Multiple witnesses recorded the incident on cellphones. In one video, Yaffe arrives to tell police the two men were waiting for him. “Why would they be asked to leave?” Yaffe says. “Does anybody else think this is ridiculous?” he asks people nearby. “It’s absolute discrimination.” A woman chimes in off-camera: “They didn’t do anything.” ALEX HORTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Pentagon seeks app to monitor health of troops Imagine that your smartphone’s camera, microphone and motion sensors were monitoring you for signs of illness. That’s the future envisioned by scientists at the Pentagon’s secretive weapons development arm, where such a system is being built to keep tabs on deployed service members. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) said last week that it has awarded a $5.1 million contract to the Fairfax-based cybersecurity company Kryptowire to develop an app. A Kryptowire vice president said the company hopes the technology can one day broaden access to health care by spotting health problems before a person seeks treatment. But the idea has privacy advocates spooked. “If you’re activating a microphone on someone’s phone, that is going to raise a lot of alarms,” said Jay Stanley, a senior policy analyst with the American Civil Liberties Union. “That’s going to have to be subject to tight controls.” DARPA said the app will collect data from smartphone features including cameras, light sensors, pedometers, fingerprint sensors and microphones. With the consent of the user, the information would be collected continuously and passively, meaning a soldier’s smartphone could be constantly scanning for signs that something is wrong. AARON GREGG

Former first lady Barbara Bush, 92, is in failing health and will not seek further medical care, according to the office of former President George H.W. Bush. After several recent hospitalizations, she has decided to focus on “comfort care,” the family’s statement said. “It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself ... but for others,” the statement said.

Trump in a tough spot President tries to appear strong with strikes in Syria even as he plans to withdraw The U.S. and its allies launched a missile attack early Saturday in Damascus, Syria.

ANALYSIS President Trump’s approach to Syria seems to be guided by a principle that has shaped so many of his administration’s policies during his time in office: Do the opposite of his predecessor. President Barack Obama had set a “red line” regarding the use of chemical weapons in Syria and then backed away from military action. To Trump, the move was emblematic of Obama’s weakness. “If President Obama had crossed his stated Red Line In The Sand, the Syrian disaster would have ended long ago!” Trump tweeted April 8 as his defense secretary was preparing a military response. On Friday, Trump struck Syria for the second time with a missile barrage to punish Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for the alleged use of chemical agents on civilians. The president’s dilemma is that strength and resolve do not necessarily equal a wellthought-out Syria strategy. If Assad ignores Friday’s relatively modest military strike and uses chemical weapons, Trump faces a difficult choice. He can escalate, pulling the U.S. military and his administration into a messy conflict that he recently said he wanted to abandon. Or he can do nothing and risk appearing weak. “That’s not a Syria strategy,” said Stephen Biddle, a frequent adviser to the Pentagon. “It’s a psychodrama.” The internal contradictions at work in Trump’s approach were on full display Friday when the president addressed the nation. Even as he promised to strike again if Assad used chemical weapons, Trump made clear that he had no interest in staying in Syria. Last month, he shocked aides when, during a speech

He also made clear that America’s help would be limited. “No amount of American blood or treasure can produce lasting peace and security in the Middle East,” he said. “The United States will be a partner and a friend, but the fate of the region lies in the hands of its own people.” Trump’s remarks reflected a view that differs from many of his generals, who have pressed to keep U.S. troops in places such as Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan indefinitely to rebuild these broken societies and ensure the
New Russia sanctions Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said Sunday the U.S. will place more sanctions on Russia this week related to its support for Syria’s chemical weapons program. Speaking on CBS, Haley said sanctions would be announced today, targeting Russian companies that have helped the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad make and deploy chemical weapons like those that spurred the U.S. and its allies to launch more than 100 missiles at Syria this weekend. enemy cannot regenerate. French President Emmanuel Macron believes Trump has changed his mind, saying Sunday that “10 days ago President Trump wanted to withdraw from Syria.

We convinced him to remain.” But like Obama, Trump has decided the U.S. has few interests in Syria and little ability to stop the long civil war — which, at the moment, the Assad regime, Russia and Iran seem to be winning. Trump is betting that periodic shows of American force can persuade Assad and his backers not to use chemical weapons. But the problem is that each time Assad is accused of using chemical weapons, Trump has to raise the stakes with a bigger show of force or risk looking feckless. As the attacks increase in size so too do the odds of a military confrontation with Russia or Iran. “A fair amount of the time that approach works,” Biddle said. “But sooner or later it fails, and fails catastrophically.” GREG JAFFE (THE WASHINGTON POST)
SYRIA Syrian President Bashar al-Assad praised Russian weaponry on Sunday as his government celebrated victory over rebels in the town where an alleged chemical attack took place, triggering U.S. airstrikes. Assad made the comments during a meeting in Damascus with Russian lawmakers, who later told reporters that he was in a “good mood,” according to Russian news reports. The meeting came a day after strikes, launched by the U.S. and its allies, hit three Syrian chemical weapons facilities. The airstrikes were in response to the suspected April 7 chemical attack in Douma, a Damascus suburb. Despite claims by President Trump that the operation was an “enormous success,” it is being interpreted in Syria as a win for Assad because the limited scope of the strikes suggested that Western powers do not intend to challenge his rule. The extent to which the attack set back Assad’s chemical weapons program is also in doubt; the Pentagon said the strikes had not targeted all of the facilities involved in the development of such weapons. In the meeting with the Russians, Assad said the strikes had demonstrated that Russian weapons were superior to U.S. ones, according to the lawmakers. Russia claims that 71 of 103 missiles fired were shot down, although the Pentagon says that is not true. LIZ SLY (TWP)

art of the thrill of Las Vegas is its 24-hour cycle of entertainment. The District isn’t meant to compete with Vegas, but some days it’s nice to let loose after grinding through another day of work. IN GAME 2 TONIGHT
John Wall and the Wizards couldn’t keep pace with the deep Raptors in a Game 1 loss Saturday.
JERRY BREWER | THE WASHINGTON POST
New-look Raptors: Old formula won’t work for Wizards There’s a belief, because the eighth-seeded Wizards have star power and a playoff pedigree and the top-seeded Raptors are an understated success story, that this first-round series is close to an even matchup. The top of the Wizards’ roster might be a little better than the top of the Raptors’. Washington swept Toronto in the first round in 2015. And the Raptors are notorious for feeling playoff pressure. It all creates a sense that this will be a tight series, even though
Toronto won 16 more games than Washington this season. On Saturday in Toronto, however, the Raptors sent a strong message about who they are during a 114-106 win in Game 1. In short, they’re better — clearly better — than Washington. Toronto is the deepest team in the NBA. In a fast-paced series of end-to-end action, the Wizards’ mediocre depth was exposed. Washington is facing an opponent with an unflappable identity built around ball movement and trust. The Wizards are still all over the place. The Wizards led early in the
fourth quarter Saturday. If Toronto was a weak No. 1 seed, Washington would have stolen the game. Instead, the Raptors responded to the Wizards’ plan to keep DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry from beating them by sharing the ball, playing 11 players and going 16-of-30 from the 3-point line. The Wizards corralled DeRozan and Lowry, limiting them to 28 points combined. That forced the Raptors to turn to Serge Ibaka, Delon Wright and a host of role players for scoring. Toronto shot 53.2 percent overall and had six players score in double figures. Seven made at least one 3-pointer, including Wright, who hit 3 of 4 and scored 18 off the bench. Injured guard Fred VanVleet wasn’t even playing. It was encouraging that John Wall had 23 points and 15 assists despite 6-for-20 shooting, and that the Wizards shot well (47.7 percent) as a team. But in key moments, the
Wizards still suffer from a lack of concentration or trust and a roster that is inferior to Toronto’s collection of talent. “Some [Raptors] guys can just flat-out shoot, and they don’t put the ball on the floor as well. We have to know that ... and make sure they get away from their strengths,” Wizards coach Scottt Brooks said. It was a kind way of saying the Wizards are not playing smart, following the scouting report or thinking in the moment. These are painfully familiar issues. And if they want to make this a competitive series, starting with Game 2 on Tuesday, they have to lock in and do the little things — rotating on defense, limiting unforced turnovers, recognizing who’s on the floor — better. There’s no rattling the Raptors or getting them to play to a lower level. The Wizards must elevate. Follow Jerry Brewer on Twitter @JerryBrewer

Desmond dooms Nats
Former Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond hit a ninth-inning home run off Sean Doolittle for the game-winning run in a 6-5 win for the Rockies on Sunday at Nationals Park. Desmond, 32, spent his first seven MLB seasons with Washington. He signed with Texas in 2016 and is in his second season with Colorado (9-8). He played first base and left field Sunday. Philadelphia will be without Joel Embiid (concussion, facial fracture) for another game, but that barely slowed the 76ers down in a 130-103 Game 1 romp on Saturday. Miami has to pick up its defense on the perimeter after allowing Philly to make 64.3 percent of its 3-pointers. The Heat also would do well to keep JJ Redick (game-high 28 points, 8-for-8 on free throws) off the line.
Spurs at Warriors 10:30 p.m., TNT
In a 113-92 win Saturday, Golden State took a 1-0 series lead by limiting the starters in San Antonio’s small-ball lineup to 33 total points. The Spurs must move the ball better — none of their players topped four assists Saturday — and cool down Klay Thompson (27 points on 11-of-13 shooting) and Kevin Durant, who had 24 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Boston holds on after Middleton’s 3 at buzzer

Boston overcame a long, buzzerbeating 3 from Milwaukee’s Khris Middleton at the end of regulation Sunday to top the visiting Bucks 113-107 in overtime in their playoff opener. Game 2 is Tuesday in Boston. Al Horford, above, had 24 points and 12 rebounds for the Celtics. They led led 99-96 with 0.5 seconds left when Middleton (31 points) took a short inbounds pass and hit a 35-footer. Terry Rozier scored 23 for Boston in his first playoff start. Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 35 points, 13 boards and seven assists before fouling out in overtime. (AP)
Washington jumped at the chance to sign cornerback Josh Norman but may not be so quick to chase Dez Bryant.
Washington has already committed to Richardson. The projected starters are Jamison Crowder, Josh Doctson and Richardson. Crowder figures to work the slot in three-receiver sets, while the team has been pushing for more opportunities for Doctson. Bryant turns 30 in November. After having more than 1,000 yards receiving and at least 12 TD catches per year from 2012-14, he hasn’t achieved either feat in the past three seasons. Washington has needs at other positions, so spending
considerably more money at wide receiver would hurt their chances at upgrading other spots. Bryant may be a star, but he’s an aging star who would likely want a pricey contract. Neither of those things would seem to align with the Redskins’ offseason plan. Bryant signed a five-year, $70 million contract in 2015 and has spent his entire eight-year career in Dallas. The No. 24 overall pick in the 2010 draft is a three-time Pro Bowler. His 73 touchdown receptions are the fifth-most among active players.
If he did come to Washington, Bryant (6 feet 2, 220 pounds) would give quarterback Alex Smith a potent threat in the red zone to go with 6-2, 246-pound tight end Jordan Reed. At least one Washington player is hoping Bryant comes to the District. Cornerback Quinton Dunbar almost immediately started lobbying Bryant to join the roster with an Intagram post that said “sweetest joy is revenge” and “#DezToDC.” KAREEM COPELAND AND KIMBERLEY A. MARTIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
GROWTH OF BLACK PLAYERS IN BASEBALL
The percentage of black players from the United States and Canada on opening-day active rosters this year, the highest since 2012. MLB released the figure ahead of the 71st anniversary Sunday of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball’s color barrier. The percentage was 7.7 last year and 8.27 the previous two seasons. It peaked at 19 percent in 1986, according to Mark Armour of the Society of American Baseball Research. Past accounts of 27 percent in the 1970s included dark-skinned players from Latin America, Armour said. NFL After Dallas released receiver Dez Bryant on Friday, he told NFL Network’s Jane Slater that he’s looking to join a team in the NFC East. But the list of landing spots for Bryant likely doesn’t include the Redskins. A person familiar with the Redskins’ thinking said the team isn’t interested in Bryant right now. It would be a big surprise for Bryant to end up in Washington, but owner Daniel Snyder has splurged on big-name players in the past. The Panthers unexpectedly pulled the franchise tag from Josh Norman in April 2016, and the Redskins swooped in and signed him to a five-year, $75 million deal. In 2014, Washington signed wide receiver DeSean Jackson to a three-year, $24 million deal after he was released by the Eagles and thencoach Chip Kelly. The Redskins have been fairly quiet this offseason, signing just three free agents who were on other NFL rosters in 2017. One of those signings was former Seahawks receiver Paul Richardson, who received a five-year, $40 million deal. That high-dollar contract could make it difficult to sign Bryant, although Washington has $17.16 million in cap space remaining. The problem with adding Bryant is figuring out how he fits into the offense, when the depth chart is already three deep and

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK
1 ‘Scandal’ 10 p.m. Thursday on ABC
Adrift in Netflix’s cosmos
The ‘Lost in Space’ reboot seems to be for everyone and no one at the same time
TV REVIEW Pawing through pop culture’s never-ending garage sale, Netflix has come up with a conspicuously big but dissatisfyingly flat remake of “Lost in Space,” Irwin Allen’s initially serious, then kitschy 1960s sci-fi TV series based on a comic book that was itself based on an early-19th-century novel called “The Swiss Family Robinson,” about a shipwrecked family. Even “The Swiss Family Robinson” borrowed a little from a novel that preceded it by a century, Daniel Defoe’s “Robinson Crusoe” — which is another way of noting that Western civilization is basically just a remake on top of a remake on top of a remake. The new “Lost in Space” (all 10 episodes premiered Friday)
is visually adequate but substantially thin. Set 30 years in the future, it stars Toby Stephens and Molly Parker as John and Maureen Robinson, a couple on the verge of divorce. He’s a military man, distanced him from his wife and three kids; she’s an astrophysicist, ready to move on. The Robinsons — bickering sisters Judy (Taylor Russell) and Penny (Mina Sundwall) and their sensitive kid brother, Will (Maxwell Jenkins) — join a select group of colonists who will leave an irreparably polluted Earth and travel to a hospitable planet that orbits Alpha Centauri. Disaster strikes the Resolute, the mother ship on which they’re traveling, and the colonists evacuate on family shuttles to a nearby planet.
A waste of ‘Space’ “Lost in Space” has a problem with marketing, promotion and vision — which remains Netflix’s biggest struggle. Is the show for adults, or is it for kids? Netflix believes that you’re all supposed to watch “Lost in Space” because it’s on Netflix, and Netflix has it all — and, for some, Netflix is now all that you have. H.S.
Trouble abounds: While the Robinsons struggle to free their ship from a frozen glacial lake, Will makes a new friend — a deadly, superstrong robot of mysterious origin, which reboots itself to become his sworn protector and learns those crucial three words: “Danger, Will Robinson.”
Soon enough, the Robinsons encounter other survivors from the Resolute, including a cunning pseudo-psychologist named Dr. Smith (Parker Posey), who lied her way onto the Resolute’s manifest and — true to the male character from the ’60s series — can’t be trusted as she schemes to make certain of her own survival. You can dress up “Lost in Space” in special effects and clever updates, but the stink of its mediocrity is immediately apparent, as is the clumsiness of its broad intent: It’s asking everyone to gather round a medium that nobody gathers round anymore. It’s a kids’ show disguised as a grown-ups’ show, and it’s unlikely to entertain either.

bastards on the weekend.”) Eve has a hunch the killer is a woman, but her superiors dismiss the idea. Eve is right: The assassin is the lithe and mysterious Villanelle of Russia, who uses a needle full of neurotoxins disguised as a hairpin. There’s an odd encounter between the two at the hospital where the witness is holed up. Villanelle tells Eve to wear her hair down, not in a bun. This remark foreshadows the series’ arc — a cat-and-mouse game between two savvy, flawed women who are more daunting than the men around them. In a world where a Russian ex-spy and his daughter were recently poisoned in England, “Killing Eve” is all too timely. But it offers guilty pleasures as well. There are scenes in tourist spots like Paris and Tuscany, and moments of droll humor — like when Villanelle exits an ice cream parlor and petulantly tips a dish of ice cream into a little girl’s lap. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Take care that what you and a friend each want is not in direct conflict with the other’s desires. You must strive to be more in sync. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) A seeming accident reveals itself to be entirely intentional on the part of someone who has been lurking in the shadows for some time. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You don’t want to jump into anything without weighing the potential gains and possible risks. Be aware of what’s going on all around you. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’ll be paying close attention to social issues today. Is there anything that you can do to change the way things are going?
FRIDAY’S SOLUTION
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You think
more is possible than those working with you today — and you can prove that you are right! Put a far-fetched idea into motion.
FRIDAY’S SOLUTION
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) A friend is revealed to be different from the person you thought you knew. But the relationship doesn’t need to change. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) It’s a good day for trying something new — especially where an old, familiar routine is concerned.
FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

Skies will stay on the cloudier side thanks to upper-level energy overhead. At night, we may get a few peeks at the stars as clouds will somewhat diminish. Colder air will return throughout the night.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Quality control has become a serious issue that only you may be able to address in any effective way. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Your view of the days ahead give you pause, but the evidence suggests that you have nothing to worry about. Beyonce paid tribute Saturday to historically black colleges and universities and reunited with Destiny’s Child during her performance at Coachella, which was delayed for a year by her pregnancy. Backed by a brass marching band and step dancers, she sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” known as the black national anthem. Beyonce noted that she was the first black woman to headline the festival. Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams joined her to sing the Destiny’s Child smash “Say My Name.” Husband JAY-Z came out for a song, as did Solange, who danced with her big sister. (AP/EXPRESS)
