A Florida man said the letter “o’’ from a Hooters sign blew off the wall and landed on his foot, causing injuries, but surveillance video said otherwise. Surgeons in Chengdu City, China, removed a lighter from a man’s stomach — two decades after he swallowed it, UPI reported Monday. Doctors’ first attempt to remove the lighter was unsuccessful, but the second time they managed to remove it within 10 minutes. The man said he’d swallowed the lighter by accident 20 years ago, but only sought medical attention recently when he started getting stomachaches. (EXPRESS)

African warthogs are not native to Florida, so state wildlife officials are investigating how one wound up loose in a suburban neighborhood. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation officials told TCPalm. com that it captured the tusky animal last month after a five-day search about 50 miles north of West Palm Beach. That included failed attempts to capture it with traps and a rope snare before a wildlife officer spotted it and tackled it. (AP)

ANIMALS Becky Malinsky was on duty in the National Zoo’s Great Ape House a little after 1 p.m. Sunday when she decided to check on the pregnant western lowland gorilla, Calaya. Malinsky, the assistant curator of primates, noticed that the gorilla looked uncomfortable, and then she saw Calaya’s water break. Malinsky got on the phone to her supervisor: “I think this is something,” she said. For the next five hours, keepers and curators at the zoo watched, and filmed, the 15-yearold gorilla endure labor and then give birth to her first offspring, a male named Moke (pronounced Mo-KEY), which means “junior” or “little one” in the Lingala language of Africa. Members of the zoo staff said it was an amazing event. The zoo’s other gorillas hovered nearby. Odd conspiracy theory spotlights little-known Resilient Cities program

MLADEN ANTONOV (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

THE DISTRICT Even as the District’s economy thrives and its population booms, looming dangers threaten to unravel its prosperity. The possibility of a terrorist strike. Heat waves and river flooding in low-lying areas, exacerbated by hotter summers and more frequent storms because of climate change. A cyber attack on the city’s increasingly interconnected services. That’s why D.C. is one of 100 cities that secured grants from a Rockefeller Foundation-backed initiative to prepare urban population centers for a future with more residents and a shifting climate. The work of the District’s newly hired Chief Resilience Officer Kevin Bush had largely been under the radar until recently, when a local lawmaker sparked an uproar by parroting a conspiracy theory suggesting the “Resilient Cities” program was part of a malevolent plot. D.C. Council member Trayon White apologized for his remarks last month and met with Bush and other city officials on Friday to learn what it means for D.C. to be a part of the global initiative. Participating cities receive grants that fund the salary of a designated “resilience officer,”

The Reslient Cities program is meant to help urban population centers prepare for future threats such as stronger storms tied to climate change.

who helps craft a strategy to prepare for catastrophic events. The District was selected in 2016 — joining cities that range from global hubs such as Paris and Rio de Janeiro to Byblos, Lebanon, population 40,000. In its application, the District listed four potential “shocks” for which it must prepare: terrorism, flooding, infrastructure failure and heat waves. And the longterm “stresses” on its residents included socioeconomic inequality, lack of affordable housing, a burdened transportation system and an economy overly dependent on the federal government. The city released a preliminary report in February 2017, and hired Bush in July to craft its resilience strategy. The Rockefeller Foundation will pay Bush’s $130,000 salary for two years.

Nearly 40 other cities have developed strategies with a wide range of goals. For example, New York City aims to create more support for domestic violence victims and wants to send zero waste to landfills by 2030. Dakar, Senegal, wants residents to use energy-efficient technology to curb persistent power outages. Urban planners say cities must focus on resilience to protect their futures. “The disparities in Washington make us vulnerable to things like climate change,” said Harriet Tregoning, a former D.C. planning director. “If you are not doing things to address those issues and looking at ways to reduce the disparities so people aren’t wiped out when there’s an event, you are going to be much worse off.” FENIT NIRAPPIL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Strong storms flood roads early Monday Drivers in the Washington area faced delays Monday morning after heavy rain forced the closure of commuter routes. Much of the region received more than two inches of rain, according to weather observers. At times, rainfall rates were up to an inch per hour as the storm moved through in the early hours of the day, making some roadways impassable. Parts of Arlington County and Potomac, Md., received more than three inches of rain. In Virginia, both directions of Interstate 66 near the Spout Run Parkway interchange were closed for more than an hour because of flooding. Flooding also led to the evacuation of the Radisson Hotel in Rockville at about 3:45 a.m. Monday. No one was injured. (TWP/AP)

Ron Snyder, a spokesman for Maryland State Police, said the man, whom he identified as Gregory Eubanks, 41, of Fort Washington, Md., was reported missing by his family on Saturday to Prince George’s County police.

Eubanks was taken to the University of Maryland Prince George’s Hospital Center. A spokeswoman for the hospital said he was in fair condition. New phone’s selling point: No internet

The White House on Monday said Ambassador Nikki Haley, left, misspoke in saying Russia sanctions were imminent.

Trump puts the brakes on new Russia sanctions White House reverses Haley’s announcement of further punishment POLITICS President Trump on Monday halted a preliminary plan to impose additional economic sanctions on Russia, walking back a Sunday announcement by U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley. Preparations to punish Russia anew for its support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government over the alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria caused consternation at the White House. Haley had said on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” that sanctions on Russian companies behind the equipment

related to Assad’s alleged chemical weapons attack would be announced Monday by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. But Trump conferred with his national security advisers later Sunday and told them he was upset the sanctions were being officially rolled out because he was not yet comfortable executing them, according to several people familiar with the plan. Trump’s team decided to publicly characterize Haley’s announcement as a misstatement, as other administration officials expressed skepticism that Haley had misspoken. They said Haley is one of the most disciplined and cautious members of the Cabinet, especially when it comes to public appearances. She regularly checks in with Trump personally

to go over her planned statements before she sits for TV interviews. After Haley’s comments, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow that the sanctions constituted “undisguised attempts of unfair competition.” But there was a subtle shift in Moscow toward a less confrontational tone. On Monday, senior lawmakers in the lower house of parliament decided to hold off until May 15 before considering any countersanctions. “We have to see what will be announced, at what scale, and who or what will become the targets of these sanctions,” Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said. GAO: Pruitt’s phone booth violated laws WASHINGTON The nearly $43,000 soundproof phone booth Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt had installed in his office last year violated federal spending laws, the Government Accountability Office said Monday. In a letter to lawmakers, GAO general counsel Thomas H. Armstrong said the agency failed to notify lawmakers that it was exceeding the $5,000 limit for agency heads to furnish, redecorate or otherwise make improvements to their offices. The EPA had argued that the almost $25,000 customized phone booth — which required painting, concrete and electrical work totaling more than $18,000 to reconfigure the small closet area where it was placed — was not part of a redecoration of Pruitt’s office and should not be subject to the $5,000 cap. The agency argued that the booth was “analogous to other functional items an employee might require to perform his job duties, such as a high speed computer, high speed copier/ scanner, or television.” The GAO did not buy that argument. Armstrong made it clear Monday that the decision was not a ruling on whether the EPA and Pruitt should have installed the high-priced phone booth to begin with, only that the EPA had failed to make proper notifications about exceeding the $5,000 cap. nation+world At least 17 inmates were seriously injured; no guards were hurt

SOUTH CAROLINA Inmates armed with homemade knives fought each other for about seven hours over territory and money, leaving seven of them dead in the worst U.S. prison riot in a quarter-century, officials said Monday. An inmate who witnessed the violence told The Associated Press that bodies were “literally stacked on top of each other.” At least 17 prisoners were seriously injured at Lee Correctional Institution, South Carolina prisons chief Bryan Stirling said. The first fight started in a dorm

about 7:15 p.m. Sunday and appeared to be contained before suddenly starting in two other dorms. Cellphones helped stir up the trouble, officials said, and they urged the federal government to change a law and allow prisons to block the signals from prisoners’ phones. No prison guards were hurt. Stirling said they followed protocol by backing out and asking for support. The maximum-security facility in Bishopville houses about 1,500 inmates, and there were 44 guards there when the first fight started. It took several hours to restore order, but once a SWAT team entered, the inmates gave up peacefully, Stirling said. A prisoner who saw the riot

Protests in Philadelphia continue at shop after ‘reprehensible’ arrests

THURSDAY, April 19, 2018 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA Starbucks wants to add training for store managers on “unconscious bias,” CEO Kevin Johnson said Monday, as activists held more protests at a Philadelphia store where two black men were arrested when employees said they were trespassing. Johnson, who has called the arrests “reprehensible,” arrived in Philadelphia this weekend after video of the arrests gained traction online. He said he hopes to meet with the two men in the next couple of days and apologize to them face-to-face. On Monday, about two dozen protesters took over the Philadelphia shop, chanting slogans like, “A whole lot of racism, a whole lot of crap, Starbucks coffee is anti-black.” A Starbucks regional vice president who attempted to talk to the protesters was shouted down. Over the weekend, demonstrators called for the firing of the employee who contacted police, who arrested the men on Thursday. Starbucks did not immediately respond to a request to confirm a report that the manager who called police had left the company.

Video shows several police talking quietly with two black men seated at a table. After a few minutes, officers handcuff the men and lead them outside as other customers say they weren’t doing anything wrong. Police haven’t released the names of the men, who were later released after the district attorney’s office said there was lack of evidence that a crime had been committed. Johnson said the company will ensure that employee guidelines on when the police should be called will be clarified. KRISTEN DE GROOT AND JOSEPH PISANI (AP)

President Trump has been criticizing the “overreach” of the raid on his attorney Michael Cohen’s office.

Sanders sought to put distance between Trump and Cohen, saying: “I believe they’ve still got some ongoing things, but the president has a large number of attorneys, as you know.” The federal raid, carried out a week ago in New York City, sought bank records, information on Cohen’s dealing in the taxi industry, Cohen’s communications with the Trump campaign and information on payments he made in 2016 to former Playboy model Karen McDougal and to Daniels, both of whom allege relationships with Trump. The proceedings Monday dealt with who gets to look at Cohen’s seized documents and devices before they are turned over to prosecutors. Though Cohen once said he “would take a bullet” for Trump, he is aware of the possible outcome — including potential prison time — and has expressed worry about his family, said a person who has spoken to the

POLITICS President Trump and his allies have hit a new level of anxiety after the raid on his personal attorney’s office, fearful of deeper exposure for Trump, his inner circle and his adult children — and more than concerned that they don’t know exactly what is in those records and electronic devices seized last week. There is also some worry that Michael Cohen, the selfdescribed legal fixer who helped make bad stories go away and took a leading role in Trump Organization projects in foreign outposts, may strike a deal with prosecutors out of concern about his own prospects. “I think it’s a huge minefield for Donald Trump and the Trump Organization,” said trial attorney Joseph Cammarata. “I think this is on its own track and this train is coming down the track with brute force.” The wild legal show continued to play out Monday, at a court hearing in New York before a federal judge who is considering what to do with the material that the FBI seized from Cohen. The scene was punctuated by dramatic entrances and revelations. Stormy Daniels — the porn actress who alleged she had a sexual affair with the president — made an appearance. Cohen was forced to reveal that another one of his clients is Fox News host Sean Hannity, a high-profile confidant of the president. Trump left the White House for Florida, for a two-day summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the president’s Mar-a-Lago estate. Advisers are hoping the meeting will draw attention from the legal tempest in Washington and New York. On the trip south, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee

Hannity said he had occasionally turned to Cohen when he had legal questions, but never paid him to be his attorney. “I never retained him, received an invoice, or paid legal fees,” Hannity tweeted Monday. “I assumed those conversations were confidential, but to be absolutely clear they never involved any matter between me and a third-party.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

lawyer in recent days. Cohen has not been charged with anything. Trump’s moods have grown darker, as he lashes out at the “overreach” of the raid. Further angering the president is that the raid was triggered in part by a referral from special counsel Robert Mueller, who is looking into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The raid was authorized by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Many in the White House view the aftershocks of the Cohen raid as potentially more threatening than Mueller’s Russia probe, fearful of what skeletons may be in the lawyer’s closets, according to five officials and outside allies. “It’s very dangerous for the president, probably the most serious thing yet,” said Sol Wisenberg, a defense attorney. “Even if you shut Mueller down some way, how do you shut down the Southern District [federal court]?” JONATHAN LEMIRE AND CATHERINE LUCEY (AP)

JOURNALISM The Washington Post received two Pulitzer Prizes on Monday, one for its investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and one for its coverage of the 2017 Senate race in Alabama, in which it broke the story of sexual misconduct allegations against the Republican candidate, Roy Moore. “These days journalists need a soul and a spine, and the journalists who worked on these had both,” said Martin Baron, The Post’s executive editor. The Post and The New York Times shared the award in the national reporting category for their work on Russian interference in the 2016 election. The Times also shared the prize for public service with The New Yorker magazine for breaking the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse scandal, work that galvanized the #MeToo movement. Other winners included: Breaking news photography: Ryan Kelly of The Daily Progress of Charlottesville, Va., for the image of a car plowing into counter-protesters, killing one woman. Breaking news reporting: The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa, Calif., for wildfire coverage. Local reporting: The Cincinnati Enquirer’s series on the heroin epidemic in the area. CAPITALS AT BLUE JACKETS | GAME 3: 7:30 TONIGHT, NBCSN

Goalie duel tilts away from Caps

NHL PLAYOFFS There was something familiar about the Capitals’ march from the locker room as the third period of Game 2 was about to start Sunday. There was Braden Holtby, taking his usual deep breath before stepping onto the ice, his mask falling over his face with that first stride. He was like a white knight there to save Washington’s playoff hopes, Capital One Arena cheering his return in net even as the team trailed Columbus by a goal. But 200 feet away from him stood the goaltender who decided the game. Sergei Bobrovsky has made the timely saves the Blue Jackets needed to take a 2-0 series lead as the matchup heads to Ohio. The Capitals have taken 88 shots in two games, and Bobrovsky has stopped 81 of them. Hot goaltenders have long haunted Washington’s playoff runs, from Montreal’s Jaroslav Halak in 2010 to Pittsburgh’s Marc-Andre Fleury last season. But this time, the problem seems to be in the Capitals’ net. Washington is the only team to have scored at least seven goals

this postseason and still lost its first two games. Before these playoffs started, coach Barry Trotz said it was a “blessing” to have both Holtby and Philipp Grubauer playing well enough to merit consideration to start. Grubauer was pulled Sunday for allowing four Columbus goals on 22 shots through two periods in Washington’s 5-4 overtime loss, and the team is likely to make a change in net for Game 3 tonight. On Monday, Trotz didn’t announce a starting goalie for Game 3 because he had yet to tell his team. The safe bet is Holtby, the 2016 Vezina Trophy winner who lost his starting job because he struggled down the stretch. Holtby’s career postseason save percentage is .932, second-best all time behind Tim Thomas. “I have absolute confidence in both goalies,” Trotz said. “They’ve been terrific. They’ve won us a lot of games, and … they bounce back all of the time.” The Capitals have managed just two even-strength goals in the series, relying on five powerplay goals. At even-strength, the

In 103 such cases, 19 teams have stormed back to win a series. The Capitals did it once, against Columbus coach John Tortorella’s Rangers in 2009. (TWP)

Capitals forward Andre Burakovsky is out for at least the next two games with an upper-body injury. The winger was injured on a hit from Blue Jackets forward Boone Jenner in the first period Sunday night, when he played just 2:12 overall. Washington lost in overtime for the second straight game. The loss of Burakovsky is a blow for a team already low on top-six forward talent. Burakovsky had three goals and three assists over his last eight games of the regular season. In a disappointing fourth NHL season, he missed 20 games with a broken thumb and tallied 12 goals and 13 assists. The injury opens a spot on the second line for rookie Jakub Vrana, who was a healthy scratch Sunday. I.K.

Caps have predictably gripped the stick too tight. Washington had a 9.4 even-strength shooting percentage during the regular season, second-best in the NHL, but that’s fallen to 3.5 in the playoffs, according to hockey metrics site Corsica. “Just finish,” Trotz said. “We had some pucks off some posts. We had some pucks behind their goaltender. They just didn’t go over the goal line. So it’s a little bit of finish, a little bit of luck, all those things.” ISABELLE KHURSHUDYAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Dropping 15 pounds helps guard return from knee rehab at full speed

NBA John Wall started his eighth NBA season fresh off the most rigorous summer of his career. But for all that training, he craved shrimp fried rice, chugged chocolate milk despite being lactose intolerant and treated himself to an occasional steak. His weight, listed at 210 pounds, crept up to 222.

“I was fat,” Wall said Monday. In late January, surgery to clean up his left knee sidelined the Wizards’ point guard. After eight weeks of dieting and rehabilitation, he had six-pack abs. Wall is now down to 207 pounds, according to his own estimation and his personal chef. The high-sodium meal of shrimp fried rice has turned into shrimp and vegetables sauteed in avocado oil, substituting cauliflower for rice. Ginger lemon tea has replaced chocolate milk. “It’s going to be good for his long-term recovery,” coach Scott Brooks said. The dietary cha nge has showed on the court. Wall has been able to play 36 minutes or more in three of the five games since his return. As Washington seeks to climb out of a 1-0 hole in its first-round playoff matchup with the Raptors, Wall will need to carry more of the weight. “I feel way better,” said Wall, who poured in 23 points with 15 assists in the Wizards’ Game 1 loss. U.S. woman ends 33-year drought BOSTON MARATHON Desiree Linden splashed her way through icy rain and wind to win the Boston Marathon on Monday, the first victory for an American woman since 1985. The two-time Olympian and 2011 Boston runner-up pulled away at the end of Heartbreak Hill to win in 2 hours, 39 minutes, 54 seconds. That was more than four minutes better than secondplace finisher Sarah Sellers — one of seven Americans in the top 10 — but the slowest for a women’s winner in Boston since 1978. “It’s supposed to be hard,” Linden said with rain in her face. “It’s good to get it done.” Yuki Kawauchi passed defending champion Geoffrey Kirui of Kenya with a mile to go to win the men’s race in 2:15:58 and earn Japan’s first Boston title since 1987.

“For me, it’s the best conditions possible,” Kawauchi said. On the fifth anniversary of the finish-line explosions that killed three and wounded hundreds more, Linden and Kawauchi led a field of 30,000 runners through a drenching rain, temperatures in the mid-30s and gusts of up to 32 mph on the 26.2-mile trek. Lisa Larsen Weidenbach’s 1985 victory, formerly the last for an American woman, came before the race offered prize money that lured the top international runners to the world’s oldest and most prestigious marathon. Linden, a California native who lives in Michigan, nearly ended the drought in 2011 when she was outkicked down Boylston Street and finished second by 2 seconds during yet another Kenyan sweep. Clean up your run

‘Plogging,’ the latest fitness craze that’s sweeping the streets, encourages runners to pick up trash while jogging TRENDS Have you recently spotted people toting trash bags while jogging? Or their hands filled with old plastic bottles? You might soon. Sweden’s latest fitness craze — plogging — is making its way to U.S. shores. The term is a mashup of jogging and the Swedish “plocka upp,” meaning pick up. In this case, litter. Across Europe, there are plogging groups in Scandinavia, Germany and beyond. In the United States, it’s just starting to catch on among exercisers who are fed up with rubbish along their routes. “I’m not going to just let litter sit there. I’m not going to just walk past that plastic bottle,” said plogger and Alexandria resident Emily Wright. “It’s not that I don’t think it’s gross to pick it up. I do. But I also think it’s gross for a person to not take responsibility for it.” Wright, 40, has been plogging for several months along the Alexandria waterfront, but just a

few weeks ago learned that what she’s been doing has a name. Her partner used to tease her about her habit of going out for a run-walk for about an hour with a trash bag and plastic gloves. “He used to call it my trash runs,” said Wright. “A few weeks ago he said, ‘the Swedes have a name for your trash runs!’” She mostly picks up cigarette butts, bits of foam containers, plastic bottles and bottle caps. Plogging not only helps the environment, it’s quite good for your health. Think squats while jogging. According to the Swedish-based fitness app Lifesum, which earlier this month made it possible for users to track plogging activity, a half-hour of jogging plus picking up trash will burn 288 calories for the average person, compared with the 235 burned by jogging alone. A brisk walk will expend about 120. “It makes me feel good for so many reasons,” Wright said. “My pants fit differently. I’m

Plogging in D.C. This Sunday — Earth Day — D.C. will host its first citywide plogging event. The 2.5-mile plog, hosted by the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation and Vida Fitness, will start at 10 a.m. at Raymond Recreation Center (3725 10th St. NW). The post-plog event will be at Vida’s U Street location, where ploggers can enjoy a complimentary lunch and refreshments. The event is free and open to the public. (EXPRESS)

more nipped in at the waist. I think it’s because of balance and flexibility.” In Sweden, plogger Maja Tesch, 28, said she learned about plogging last year, when it became popular in the Scandinavian country. It spread through wordof-mouth, and the hashtag #plogging started popping up on social media. Tesch said she regularly organizes plogging events in which she and friends will pluck

litter for a few hours, then spend time hanging out around a fire. The environmental organization Keep America Beautiful started promoting plogging as a way to encourage trash-free communities. Spokesman Mike Rosen said when the group put out the #plogging message to its affiliates, it got a surprising response. “People started saying ‘we do things like this already,’” Rosen said. “In Tennessee they do an event called ‘Trashercize’ that combines exercising with cleaning up community.” Laura Lindberg, who lives in Hoboken, N.J., said she learned about plogging and had what she called an “aha moment.” “It was a no-brainer. I knew I could incorporate it into my runs,” said Lindberg, 36, who runs uns four or five days a week. “I suddenly uddenly felt guilty for not doing it for all these years I’ve been running. ning. All you need is a bag.” She also lso takes along a pair of gardening g gloves.

Hand dryers may leave your hands significantly more dirty than before you washed, according to a new study. The study, published in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology, found that plates exposed to 30 seconds of a bathroom hand dryer gained at least 18 to 60 colonies of bacteria, while plates exposed to bathroom air for two minutes had fewer than one. The study’s authors, who found that the nozzle of the dryers had minimal bacterial levels, said that more evidence was needed to determine if the dryers were bacteria harbors themselves or just blew large amounts of contaminated air. The study noted that dryers with a certain type of filters called HEPA filters could reduce the bacteria fourfold. ELI ROSENBERG (TWP)

Q. I am dating someone well-known in our community (think respected blogger in a certain field). I had gotten used to feeling pretty accomplished, at least on par with who I date, and I tend to feel like I’m the attractive one in a relationship. Now I feel like I’m the appendage. He’s not famous-famous, but I feel eclipsed in his circles. Is there a way to get over this? UNCOMFORTABLE You’re dating someone with whom there is a new dynamic and balance of power and status, and that may take some adjustment. A history of always feeling like the attractive one in your relationships could mean many things — from being smokin’ hot while not needing partners to be that way (great!), or pathologically needing your partners to feel grateful just for getting to

hold your hand in public (not so great). There’s no way for me to know here, but I’ll err on the side of not pathologizing: You’re human, your partner is not the typical partner, and so your reaction is natural and understandable. Give it time and see where it goes. Ultimately, you choose to be with the person, not the image. And the positives will either overrule the negatives or they won’t.

guy my friend is now dating. Nothing serious, just a few hookups when we knew each other years ago. She knew that we were acquaintances, but she has no idea otherwise. I keep going back and forth on whether to say something to her. For what it’s worth, they don’t seem serious yet. My gut says to let it go, but I also feel like if it does come out someday and I never said anything, then that will be a bad situation. TORN There are two truths here, and they’re at odds. One: For sure, it is far better for her to find out now than to find out later. Two: On any given day, it is easier if she doesn’t find out at all. But, easy doesn’t necessarily mean right. I’m not sure how close you are to this friend. Is it fair to her to withhold this? And imagine having to sit on this secret potentially indefinitely — or even worse, wondering if others who knew of it, including him, are going to spill the beans regardless of your wishes. It definitely runs the risk of becoming A Thing. I’m generally in favor of preventing the growth of such Things. And if they are not yet serious, hopefully this should not (yet) be a humongous deal.

AWARDS Kendrick Lamar has won the Pulitzer Prize for music, making history as the first non-classical, non-jazz artist to win the prestigious prize. The revered rapper is the most commercially successful musician to receive the award, usually reserved for critically acclaimed classical acts. The 30-year-old won the prize for “DAMN.,” his raw and powerful Grammy-winning album. The Pulitzer board said Monday the album is a “virtuosic song collection” and said it captures “the modern African-American life.” He will win $15,000. Lamar has been lauded for his deep lyrical content, politically charged live performances and profound mix of hip-hop, spoken word, jazz, soul, funk, poetry and African sounds. The Pulitzer board has previously awarded special honors to Bob Dylan, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Hank Williams, but a popular figure like Lamar has never won the prize

for music. In 1997, Wynton Marsalis became the first jazz act to win the Pulitzer Prize for music. That makes Lamar’s win that much more important: His platinum-selling major-label albums — “good kid, m.A.A.d city,” ‘’To Pimp a Butterfly” and “DAMN.” — became works of art, with Lamar writing songs about blackness, street life, police brutality, perseverance, survival and self-worth. His piercing and sharp raps helped him become the voice of the generation, and easily ascend as the leader in hip-hop and cross over to audiences outside of rap, from rock to pop to jazz. He’s also been a dominator on the charts, having achieved two dozen Top 40 hits. His music, with songs like “Alright” and “The Blacker the Berry,” have become anthems in the wake of high-profile police shootings of minorities as the conversation about race relations dominates news headlines. “DAMN.,” released on April 14, 2017, won five Grammys, including best rap album, but lost album of the year to Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic.” It topped several year-end lists by critics, including NPR, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, BBC News, Complex and Vulture. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You may feel as though you’ve been overlooked, but perhaps it’s just not your turn yet. Be ready. can use the clock to your advantage today while others find themselves bogged down by details that don’t really matter.

TODAY: It’s more of the same, although we’ll see a brighter sky (partly sunny, at best). Highs are still much cooler than normal (by 15 degrees or so) for mid-April, only reaching the low-to-mid-50s. A few showers or wet snowflakes could fall across our northern suburbs. Skies will clear more substantially tonight.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may be asking too much of yourself right now. Why give others power over you by exhausting your resources? CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Good and bad may become somewhat indistinguishable for a time today, and routine decisions you make will matter more than ever.

They “were sitting on each other’s laps and all over each other all night long,” a source told People magazine. “They definitely looked like they were fully back together.” The two dated for two years before their breakup in late 2016, after which The Weeknd dated Selena Gomez.
