Surgeons in Chengdu City, China, removed a lighter from a man’s stomach — two decades after he swallowed it, UPI reported Monday. Doctors’ first attempt to remove the lighter was unsuccessful, but the second time they managed to remove it within 10 minutes. The man said he’d swallowed the lighter by accident 20 years ago, but only sought medical attention recently when he started getting stomachaches. (EXPRESS)
African warthogs are not native to Florida, so state wildlife officials are investigating how one wound up loose in a suburban neighborhood. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation officials told TCPalm. com that it captured the tusky animal last month after a five-day search about 50 miles north of West Palm Beach. That included failed attempts to capture it with traps and a rope snare before a wildlife officer spotted it and tackled it. (AP)

ANIMALS Becky Malinsky was on duty in the National Zoo’s Great Ape House a little after 1 p.m. Sunday when she decided to check on the pregnant western lowland gorilla, Calaya. Malinsky, the assistant curator of primates, noticed that the gorilla looked uncomfortable, and then she saw Calaya’s water break. Malinsky got on the phone to her supervisor: “I think this is something,” she said. For the next five hours, keepers and curators at the zoo watched, and filmed, the 15-yearold gorilla endure labor and then give birth to her first offspring, a male named Moke (pronounced Mo-KEY), which means “junior” or “little one” in the Lingala language of Africa. Members of the zoo staff said it was an amazing event. The zoo’s other gorillas hovered nearby. And the after the baby was born, its father, Baraka, 25, emitted a vocal “pleasure rumble,” a sign of contentment, the zoo said. “I never thought I would get to witness a gorilla baby being born,” Malinsky said Monday. “Quite incredible.” The baby, the zoo’s first gorilla

THE DISTRICT Even as the District’s economy thrives and its population booms, looming dangers threaten to unravel its prosperity. The possibility of a terrorist strike. Heat waves and river flooding in low-lying areas, exacerbated by hotter summers and more frequent storms because of climate change. A cyber attack on the city’s increasingly interconnected services. That’s why D.C. is one of 100 cities that secured grants from a Rockefeller Foundation-backed initiative to prepare urban population centers for a future with more residents and a shifting climate. The work of the District’s newly hired Chief Resilience Officer Kevin Bush had largely been under the radar until recently, when a local lawmaker sparked an uproar by parroting a conspiracy theory suggesting the “Resilient Cities” program was part of a malevolent plot. D.C. Council member Trayon White apologized for his remarks last month and met with Bush and other city officials on Friday to learn what it means for D.C. to be a part of the global initiative. Participating cities receive grants that fund the salary of a designated “resilience officer,”

The District was selected in 2016 — joining cities that range from global hubs such as Paris and Rio de Janeiro to Byblos, Lebanon, population 40,000. In its application, the District listed four potential “shocks” for which it must prepare: terrorism, flooding, infrastructure failure and heat waves. And the longterm “stresses” on its residents included socioeconomic inequality, lack of affordable housing, a burdened transportation system and an economy overly dependent on the federal government. The city released a preliminary report in February 2017, and hired Bush in July to craft its resilience strategy. The Rockefeller Foundation will pay Bush’s $130,000 salary for two years.
Nearly 40 other cities have developed strategies with a wide range of goals. For example, New York City aims to create more support for domestic violence victims and wants to send zero waste to landfills by 2030. Dakar, Senegal, wants residents to use energy-efficient technology to curb persistent power outages. Urban planners say cities must focus on resilience to protect their futures. “The disparities in Washington make us vulnerable to things like climate change,” said Harriet Tregoning, a former D.C. planning director. “If you are not doing things to address those issues and looking at ways to reduce the disparities so people aren’t wiped out when there’s an event, you are going to be much worse off.” FENIT NIRAPPIL (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Strong storms flood roads early Monday Drivers in the Washington area faced delays Monday morning after heavy rain forced the closure of commuter routes. Much of the region received more than two inches of rain, according to weather observers. At times, rainfall rates were up to an inch per hour as the storm moved through in the early hours of the day, making some roadways impassable. Parts of Arlington County and Potomac, Md., received more than three inches of rain. In Virginia, both directions of Interstate 66 near the Spout Run Parkway interchange were closed for more than an hour because of flooding. Flooding also led to the evacuation of the Radisson Hotel in Rockville at about 3:45 a.m. Monday. No one was injured. (TWP/AP)

Spotsylvania, Va., police: White man blamed self-inflicted gunshot on black men
Baby food maker Gerber Products Company is moving its corporate headquarters to Northern Virginia, where it will join its corporate cousin, Nestle USA. The company said Monday it will move from Florham Park, N.J., to Rosslyn in Arlington County. Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said the move will create 150 new jobs in Virginia. Northam approved an $863,000 grant to lure Gerber from New Jersey. Arlington County will match that grant in local infrastructure improvements. Arrest made in shooting outside Metro station Police say a man has been arrested in connection with a shooting Friday outside the Greenbelt Metro. Transit police said Reginald Raquan Felix, 18, was arrested on a charge of attempted murder and several lesser charges Sunday. Man suspected in killing found dead in prison cell A man sentenced to more than 100 years for sexually abusing a girl was found dead in his prison cell hours after Maryland police identified him as a person of interest in the long-unsolved disappearance of the girl’s mother. Montgomery County police held a news conference Thursday to discuss the 2000 disappearance of Alison Thresher, a copy editor at The Washington Post. Police identified Fernando Asturizaga, who taught and sometimes babysat Thresher’s daughter, as a person of interest. A death investigation is being conducted. (AP)

Ron Snyder, a spokesman for Maryland State Police, said the man, whom he identified as Gregory Eubanks, 41, of Fort Washington, Md., was reported missing by his family on Saturday to Prince George’s County police.
Eubanks was taken to the University of Maryland Prince George’s Hospital Center. A spokeswoman for the hospital said he was in fair condition. Md. man pleads guilty to bribing public official A Maryland man pleaded guilty Monday to bribing a public official to steer more than $2.2 million from Veterans Affairs to a fraudulent information technology school with services for disabled veterans, federal authorities said. In 2015, Albert S. Poawui, 41, and a vocational counselor at VA agreed Poawui would pay a 7 percent cash kickback for VA payments to Atius Technology Institute, a non-accredited information technology school, officials said. Trump puts the brakes on new Russia sanctions White House reverses Haley’s announcement of further punishment POLITICS President Trump on Monday halted a preliminary plan to impose additional economic sanctions on Russia, walking back a Sunday announcement by U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley. Preparations to punish Russia anew for its support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government over the alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria caused consternation at the White House. Haley had said on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” that sanctions on Russian companies behind the equipment
related to Assad’s alleged chemical weapons attack would be announced Monday by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. But Trump conferred with his national security advisers later Sunday and told them he was upset the sanctions were being officially rolled out because he was not yet comfortable executing them, according to several people familiar with the plan. Trump’s team decided to publicly characterize Haley’s announcement as a misstatement, as other administration officials expressed skepticism that Haley had misspoken. They said Haley is one of the most disciplined and cautious members of the Cabinet, especially when it comes to public appearances. She regularly checks in with Trump personally
to go over her planned statements before she sits for TV interviews. After Haley’s comments, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow that the sanctions constituted “undisguised attempts of unfair competition.” But there was a subtle shift in Moscow toward a less confrontational tone. On Monday, senior lawmakers in the lower house of parliament decided to hold off until May 15 before considering any countersanctions. “We have to see what will be announced, at what scale, and who or what will become the targets of these sanctions,” Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said. Hundreds of 1,000-year-old silver coins, rings, pearls and bracelets linked to the era of Danish King Harald Gormsson have been found on the eastern German island of Ruegen in the Baltic Sea. A single silver coin was first found in January by two amateur archaeologists, one of them a 13-year-old boy, using metal detectors. The state archaeology office said Monday it then became involved and uncovered the entire treasure over the weekend. (AP)
Officials say New York City jails will accommodate transgender inmates
GAO: Pruitt’s phone booth violated laws WASHINGTON The nearly $43,000 soundproof phone booth Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt had installed in his office last year violated federal spending laws, the Government Accountability Office said Monday. In a letter to lawmakers, GAO general counsel Thomas H. Armstrong said the agency failed to notify lawmakers that it was exceeding the $5,000 limit for agency heads to furnish, redecorate or otherwise make improvements to their offices. The EPA had argued that the almost $25,000 customized phone booth — which required painting, concrete and electrical work totaling more than $18,000 to reconfigure the small closet area where it was placed — was not part of a redecoration of Pruitt’s office and should not be subject to the $5,000 cap. The agency argued that the booth was “analogous to other functional items an employee might require to perform his job duties, such as a high speed computer, high speed copier/ scanner, or television.” The GAO did not buy that argument. Armstrong made it clear Monday that the decision was not a ruling on whether the EPA and Pruitt should have installed the high-priced phone booth to begin with, only that the EPA had failed to make proper notifications about exceeding the $5,000 cap. PHILADELPHIA Starbucks wants to add training for store managers on “unconscious bias,” CEO Kevin Johnson said Monday, as activists held more protests at a Philadelphia store where two black men were arrested when employees said they were trespassing. Johnson, who has called the arrests “reprehensible,” arrived in Philadelphia this weekend after video of the arrests gained traction online. He said he hopes to meet with the two men in the next couple of days and apologize to them face-to-face. On Monday, about two dozen protesters took over the Philadelphia shop, chanting slogans like, “A whole lot of racism, a whole lot of crap, Starbucks coffee is anti-black.” A Starbucks regional vice president who attempted to talk to the protesters was shouted down. Over the weekend, demonstrators called for the firing of the employee who contacted police, who arrested the men on Thursday. There was Braden Holtby, taking his usual deep breath before stepping onto the ice, his mask falling over his face with that first stride. He was like a white knight there to save Washington’s playoff hopes, Capital One Arena cheering his return in net even as the team trailed Columbus by a goal. But 200 feet away from him stood the goaltender who decided the game. Sergei Bobrovsky has made the timely saves the Blue Jackets needed to take a 2-0 series lead as the matchup heads to Ohio. The Capitals have taken 88 shots in two games, and Bobrovsky has stopped 81 of them. Hot goaltenders have long haunted Washington’s playoff runs, from Montreal’s Jaroslav Halak in 2010 to Pittsburgh’s Marc-Andre Fleury last season. But this time, the problem seems to be in the Capitals’ net. Washington is the only team to have scored at least seven goals
this postseason and still lost its first two games. Before these playoffs started, coach Barry Trotz said it was a “blessing” to have both Holtby and Philipp Grubauer playing well enough to merit consideration to start. Grubauer was pulled Sunday for allowing four Columbus goals on 22 shots through two periods in Washington’s 5-4 overtime loss, and the team is likely to make a change in net for Game 3 tonight. On Monday, Trotz didn’t announce a starting goalie for Game 3 because he had yet to tell his team. The safe bet is Holtby, the 2016 Vezina Trophy winner who lost his starting job because he struggled down the stretch. U.S. woman ends 33-year drought BOSTON MARATHON Desiree Linden splashed her way through icy rain and wind to win the Boston Marathon on Monday, the first victory for an American woman since 1985. The two-time Olympian and 2011 Boston runner-up pulled away at the end of Heartbreak Hill to win in 2 hours, 39 minutes, 54 seconds. That was more than four minutes better than secondplace finisher Sarah Sellers — one of seven Americans in the top 10 — but the slowest for a women’s winner in Boston since 1978. “It’s supposed to be hard,” Linden said with rain in her face. “It’s good to get it done.” Yuki Kawauchi passed defending champion Geoffrey Kirui of Kenya with a mile to go to win the men’s race in 2:15:58 and earn Japan’s first Boston title since 1987.

‘Plogging,’ the latest fitness craze that’s sweeping the streets, encourages runners to pick up trash while jogging TRENDS Have you recently spotted people toting trash bags while jogging? Or their hands filled with old plastic bottles? You might soon. Sweden’s latest fitness craze — plogging — is making its way to U.S. shores. The term is a mashup of jogging and the Swedish “plocka upp,” meaning pick up. In this case, litter. Across Europe, there are plogging groups in Scandinavia, Germany and beyond. In the United States, it’s just starting to catch on among exercisers who are fed up with rubbish along their routes. “I’m not going to just let litter sit there. I’m not going to just walk past that plastic bottle,” said plogger and Alexandria resident Emily Wright. “It’s not that I don’t think it’s gross to pick it up. I do. But I also think it’s gross for a person to not take responsibility for it.” Wright, 40, has been plogging for several months along the Alexandria waterfront, but just a
few weeks ago learned that what she’s been doing has a name. Her partner used to tease her about her habit of going out for a run-walk for about an hour with a trash bag and plastic gloves. “He used to call it my trash runs,” said Wright. “A few weeks ago he said, ‘the Swedes have a name for your trash runs!’” She mostly picks up cigarette butts, bits of foam containers, plastic bottles and bottle caps. Plogging not only helps the environment, it’s quite good for your health. Think squats while jogging. According to the Swedish-based fitness app Lifesum, which earlier this month made it possible for users to track plogging activity, a half-hour of jogging plus picking up trash will burn 288 calories for the average person, compared with the 235 burned by jogging alone. A brisk walk will expend about 120. “It makes me feel good for so many reasons,” Wright said. “My pants fit differently. I’m

Hand dryers may leave your hands significantly more dirty than before you washed, according to a new study. The study, published in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology, found that plates exposed to 30 seconds of a bathroom hand dryer gained at least 18 to 60 colonies of bacteria, while plates exposed to bathroom air for two minutes had fewer than one. The study’s authors, who found that the nozzle of the dryers had minimal bacterial levels, said that more evidence was needed to determine if the dryers were bacteria harbors themselves or just blew large amounts of contaminated air. UNCOMFORTABLE You’re dating someone with whom there is a new dynamic and balance of power and status, and that may take some adjustment. A history of always feeling like the attractive one in your relationships could mean many things — from being smokin’ hot while not needing partners to be that way (great!), or pathologically needing your partners to feel grateful just for getting to
hold your hand in public (not so great). There’s no way for me to know here, but I’ll err on the side of not pathologizing: You’re human, your partner is not the typical partner, and so your reaction is natural and understandable. Give it time and see where it goes. Ultimately, you choose to be with the person, not the image. And the positives will either overrule the negatives or they won’t.

AWARDS Kendrick Lamar has won the Pulitzer Prize for music, making history as the first non-classical, non-jazz artist to win the prestigious prize. Beyonce announced Monday she is donating $100,000 to four historically black universities. The Homecoming Scholars Award Program for the 2018-2019 year will be part of her BeyGOOD initiative. She plans to give $25,000 each to Tuskegee University, Bethune-Cookman University, Xavier University of Louisiana and Wilberforce University.
