Integration’s growing pains ARLINGTON To Clayton Powell and Charles Carpenter, leaving their all-black Arlington high school in 1964 to help integrate a much larger white one was an opportunity to spread their wings. To others, like Peggy Carter Jones, it was like being pushed out of the nest before they could fly. All were part of the Class of ’65 and had grown up in the narrow spaces allotted to black Arlingtonians: three or four neighborhoods where they could live, and Hoffman-Boston, the one building where they could attend junior high and high school, using tattered books and nubs of chalk discarded from white schools. Last week, six members of that class, now in their early 70s, returned to Hoffman-Boston, now an elementary school. Brenda Cox, a retired librarian, recalled how the black community, less than 5 percent of the county’s population, was woven tightly together. The faculty “had seen the

struggle,” she said. “They were preparing us to go into the world and be able to deal with anything we came upon.” In 1959, Arlington became the first district in the commonwealth to integrate, after the state’s “massive resistance” to the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ruling. Four students entered Stratford Junior High School (now H-B Woodlawn). Hoffman-Boston JuniorSenior High school closed in 1964. The high school students

but to some of the 60-odd rising seniors, it felt like exile. “It was a terrible year,” said Carter Jones, the only one of the six to attend high school at Washington-Lee. In a county where black kids could not skate at the local roller rink or swim in local pools, some recalled racism in their new school. It could be overt — white students throwing chocolate milk at them — or more subtle. “When you raised your hand to answer a question, they wouldn’t call on you,” Carter Jones said. “When you went in the cafeteria, they wouldn’t sit with you.” But as intimate and beloved as Hoffman-Boston had been, Wakefield offered a greater variety of academic classes as well as sports such as gymnastics, Charles Carpenter said. “In order to get the best possible education, integration was the way to go.” Clayton Powell, who played football and basketball, agreed, adding that it gave black athletes a wider field on which to prove themselves and to bond across the color line. “I left there with a positive attitude, basically because of sports,” he said. Scandals slow fundraising VIRGINIA A series of scandals surrounding Virginia’s top Democrats has made it difficult for them to raise money in a key election year. Gov. Ralph Northam, Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax and Attorney General Mark Herring all posted anemic campaign finance reports Monday far below what their predecessors have raised at similar points in past election cycles. The trio was set to help use their name recognition and fundraising prowess to help Democrats try to flip control of the General Assembly later this year

before a several scandals erupted. Now it’s unclear what kind of financial help they can bring. Northam first admitted, then denied that he’d appeared in a racist photo that surfaced in his medical school yearbook. He did say he wore blackface in the 1980s. Herring later admitted to wearing blackface in college.

And two women came forward with allegations that Fairfax sexually assaulted them several years ago, allegations he denies. All three men have resisted calls to resign. All 140 legislative seats are up for grabs in 2019, a year when there are only three other states with legislative elections.

Lawmakers were not allowed to raise any money during this year’s legislative session, but governors typically raise big bucks after the session ends. Former Gov. Terry McAuliffe raised more than $530,000 in 2015 after the session ended, according to an analysis by the nonprofit Virginia Public Access Project. Northam, by contrast, has raised just $2,500 for his political action committee after the session ended this year. Fairfax has not raised any money since the session ended. Herring, who said last year he plans to run for governor in 2021, has raised about $17,000 — far below the $64,000 he raised four years ago when the session finished. ALAN SUDERMAN (AP)

The teacher, who was hired in March 2016, has not been criminally charged and is not a defendant in the lawsuit. Because of that, The Washington Post is not naming him. especially in the soaring vault. But a few government officials ventured inside, and camera footage showed charred rubble in front of the still-intact pews. In an evening address to the nation, French President Emmanuel Macron described the firefighters as heroic, and said he hoped the country would reconstruct Notre Dame within five years — a more rapid timetable than that put forward by experts. “We now have to get things done,” Macron said. “We will act, and we will succeed.” He said the rebuilt cathedral would be “even more beautiful.” From around the world, more than $700 million in private donations poured in for reconstruction, while both Parisians and tourists lined the Seine, bearing witness at bridges where police cut off access to the site. Pope Francis on Tuesday called the fire a “catastrophe” and described on Twitter a desire that the damage would be “transformed into hope with reconstruction.”

PARIS With its ic on ic c athed ra l scorched but still standing, France on Tuesday launched an investigation into what triggered the Notre Dame inferno and how a fire that had probably started by accident could gut the symbol of a nation. Much of the valued art and relics had been saved. Even the exquisite stained glass windows remained in place, seemingly immune to the previous day’s flames. But that belied the somber accounting of all that had been lost, and how the religious and architectural landmark at Paris’ center had been altered. The church’s trademark steeple, part of the Parisian skyline since the mid-1800s, had been swallowed in the flames. Char and smoke marks licked portions of the walls. And the roof — constructed with centuries-old wood — had been destroyed like tinder, leaving gaping holes that let sunlight shine into the cathedral Tuesday. Officials warned that Notre Dame may still have gravely dangerous vulnerabilities,

Move by Tehran follows Washington’s steps to curb elite Iranian guard TEHRAN, IRAN Iran’s lawmakers on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a bill labeling U.S. forces in the Middle East as terrorist forces, a day after the U.S. terrorism designation for Iran’s Revolutionary Guard formally took effect, state TV reported.

Defense Minister Gen. Amir Hatami introduced the bill authorizing the government to act firmly in response to “terrorist actions” by U.S. forces. It demands authorities use “legal, political and diplomatic” measures to neutralize the American move, without elaborating. The U.S. move aims at “thwarting Iran’s influence,” and shows that America’s long-standing sanctions against Iran have become ineffective, Hatami said.

IRANIAN PRESIDENCY OFFICE VIA AP

U.S. Mideast forces deemed terrorists Iranian Defense Minister Gen. Amir Hatami (right, with President Hassan Rouhani) introduced a bill designating U.S. forces in the region terrorists.

During the debate, some hardliner lawmakers had demanded listing the entire U.S. army and security forces as terrorist forces. It remains unclear how the

Italian bank UniCredit to pay $1.3B to settle U.S. charges that it violated sanctions against Iran

bill’s passage in parliament would affect the Guard’s activities in the Persian Gulf, where the U.S. Navy has in the past accused Iranian patrol boats of

harassing American warships. The Revolutionary Guard has forces and wields influence in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen, and is in charge of Iranian missiles with U.S. bases in their range. The Guard’s designation — the first ever for an entire division of another government — adds another layer of sanctions to the powerful paramilitary force and makes it a crime under U.S. jurisdiction to provide it with material support. Depending on how broadly “material support” is interpreted, the designation may complicate U.S. diplomatic and military cooperation with certain third-country officials, notably in Iraq and Lebanon. DAMASCUS Syrians in government-controlled areas who have survived eight years of war now face a new scourge: widespread fuel shortages that have brought life to a halt in major cities. The shortages are largely the result of Western sanctions on Syria and renewed U.S. sanctions on Iran, a key ally. But they have sparked rare and widespread public criticism of President Bashar al-Assad’s government. Western sanctions imposed after Assad launched a violent crackdown on Arab Spring protests in 2011 crippled the country’s oil industry, which once provided 20 percent of government revenues. Syria produced 350,000 barrels per day before the war and exported more than half of it. Now it is down to around 24,000 barrels

On the trail of ‘Patient Zero’ HEALTH Last month, a traveler from Israel raising money for charity in Brooklyn’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish community drove through the night to Detroit — his next fundraising stop. He felt sick en route and saw a doctor when he got there. But the doctor, who had never seen measles, misdiagnosed the man’s fever and cough as bronchitis. During the next two weeks, the traveler would become Michigan’s Patient Zero, spreading the highly contagious respiratory virus to 39 people as he stayed in private homes, attended synagogue daily and shopped in kosher markets. His case offers a cautionary tale about how easily one of the most infectious pathogens on the planet spreads within close-knit communities — especially those whose members live, work and socialize outside the mainstream. “Every one of our cases has had a link to the initial case,” said Leigh-Anne Stafford, health officer for Oakland County, a Detroit suburb where all but one case was reported. In the past five years, 75 percent of measles cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention occurred in various insular communities, including the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in New York.

A clinic near New York City offers vaccines to help curb a measles outbreak.

In the current outbreak, the New York contagion has spread through Patient Zero and other travelers to predominantly ultraOrthodox communities in Westchester and Rockland Counties in New York; Oakland County in Michigan; and Baltimore County in Maryland. On Friday, Connecticut officials said an adult contracted measles while visiting Brooklyn in late March. New Jersey officials are investigating possible links between 11 cases in the Ocean County area and those in New York. In Michigan, health officials turned to Steve McGraw, head of Oakland emergency medical services and a longtime member

Hatzalah members and rabbinical leaders also mobilized to search for the traveler, who was staying in a neighborhood guesthouse. When they found him a few hours later, the traveler was stunned. He told McGraw and the rabbi who found him they had to be wrong, since he believed he’d had the measles. “There is only one disease, and you have it,” McGraw recalled saying, as one rabbi translated into Hebrew. “He put his head down and was very emotional. I could tell from the look on his face that he was devastated. He was doing the math in his head,” counting all the people he had been in contact with, McGraw said. Community leaders sprang into action to help stem the spread of the disease. The Hatzalah and rabbinical leaders helped the health department set up three clinics at one synagogue, immunizing nearly 1,000 people in one week. As of early April, health officials had given more than 2,100 vaccinations. In Michigan, at least, the close collaboration between health officials and the religious community appears to have controlled the spread of the disease, which can cause severe complications including deafness, pneumonia, brain damage and death. Dying industry adjusts The funeral as we know it is becoming a relic — and just in time for a death boom ‘Memorialpalooza’ Dayna West hired a Los Angeles “celebration-of-life planner” to create what West dubbed “Memorialpalooza” for her father, Howard, in 2016 a few months after his death. More than 300 people came to the event at Sony Pictures Studios, which featured a hot dog cart, gift bags with a baseball cap inscribed “Life’s not fair, get over it” (a beloved Howardism) and a constellation of speakers — with Jerry Seinfeld as the closer (Howard was his personal manager). “My dad never followed rules,” says West. (TWP)

SPIKE MAFFORD

CULTURE An increasingly secular, nomadic and casual America is shredding the rules about how to commemorate death. Somber, embalmedbody funerals, with their $9,000 industry average price tag, are, for many families, a relic. Instead, end-of-life ceremonies are being personalized: golf-course cocktail send-offs, backyard potluck memorials — more Sinatra and Clapton, less “Ave Maria.” The movement will only accelerate as the nation approaches a historic spike in deaths. In 2030, people over 65 will outnumber children, and in 2037, 3.6 million people are projected to die in the U.S., according to the Census Bureau (1million more than in 2015), a figure projected to outpace the growth of the overall population. The death industry has experienced seismic changes over the past couple of decades. Practices began to shift during the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s, when many funeral homes were unable to meet the needs of so many young men dying, and friends often hosted events that resembled parties. Now, many families are replacing funerals (where the body is present) with memorial services (where the body is not). Religious burial requirements are less of a consideration in a country where only 36 percent of Americans say they regularly attend religious services, nearly a third never or rarely attend, and almost a quarter identify as agnostic or atheist, according to the Pew Research Center. More than half of all American deaths lead to cremations, compared to 28 percent in 2002, due to expense (they can cost a third the price of a burial), the environment and family members living far apart with

Funerals go green With increased concern for the environment, people are opting for green funerals, where the body is placed in a biodegradable coffin or shroud. “My work is letting people connect with the natural cycle as they die,” says Katrina Spade of Recompose in Seattle. If its legislature grants approval this month, Washington will become the first state in the nation to approve legalized human composting. Spade’s company plans to use wood chips, alfalfa and straw to turn bodies into a cubic yard of topsoil in 30 days. (TWP)

less ability to visit cemetery plots, according to the National Funeral Directors Association. By 2035, the cremation rate is projected to be a staggering 80 percent, the association says. And cremation frees loved ones to stage a memorial anywhere, at any time, and to store or scatter ashes as they please. Past funeral association

president Mark Musgrove, who runs a network of funeral homes and chapels in Eugene, Ore., says his industry, already marked by consolidation, is adapting to changing demands. “Services are more life-centered, around the person’s personality, likes and dislikes. They’re unique and not standardized,” he says. “The only way we can survive is to provide the services that families find meaningful.” Funeral homes have hired event planners, remodeled drab parlors to include dance floors and lounge areas and acquired liquor licenses. In Oregon, where cremation rates are near 80 percent, Musgrove has organized memorial celebrations at golf courses and Autzen Stadium, home of the Ducks. He sells urns that resemble giant golf balls and styles adorned with the University of Oregon logo. Memorials are no longer strictly local events. His service is experiencing annual growth of 15 to 20 percent. Some practitioners worry that death has taken a holiday, and grief is too frequently banished in end-of-life celebrations that seem like birthday blowouts. “Do you think we’re getting too happy with this?” asks Amy Cunningham, director of the Inspired Funeral in Brooklyn. “You can’t pay tribute to someone who has died without acknowledging the death and sadness around it. You still have to dip into reality and not ignore the fact that they’re absent now.” KAREN HELLER

CAIRO Egypt’s parliament on Tuesday passed amendments to the constitution that could see President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi remain in power until 2030. The vote, which sends the amendments to a national referendum, was seen by critics as another step back to authoritarianism, eight years after a pro-democracy uprising ended autocrat Hosni Mubarak’s three-decade rule. The 596-member assembly, packed with Sissi’s supporters, overwhelmingly gave its initial approval in February, sending it to the Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committee to finalize the wording before Tuesday’s final vote. Of the 554 lawmakers who attended the session, 531 voted “yes,” 22 voted “no” and one abstained. The national referendum will likely take place before early May, when the Muslim holy month of Ramadan starts. The constitutional changes would only extend a president’s term in office from four to six years and allow for a maximum of two terms. But they also include a special article specific to Sissi that extends his current second four-year term to six years and allows him to run for another six-year term in 2024 — potentially extending his rule until 2030. Justifying this clause, speaker Ali Abdel-Al said it was aimed at “political justice ... and the required stability.” SAMY

Human Rights in Focus This spring and summer, some of Washington’s best-loved museums are honing in on human rights. First stop? The National Museum of Women in the Arts at 1250 New York Ave., NW. NMWA is the only major museum in the world solely dedicated to championing women through the arts. It works to improve representation of women artists while serving as a center for thought leadership, community engagement and social change. The museum addresses the gender imbalance in the presentation of art by showcasing important women artists of the past while promoting great women artists working today. Right now at the museum you can view monumental wood sculptures that evoke the power and grandeur of nature in Ursula von Rydingsvard: The Contour of Feeling. The

In March the Newseum opened Rise Up: Stonewall and the LGBTQ Rights Movement, marking the 50th anniversary of a June 1969 police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village. That raid led to the Stonewall riots, and today is considered the impetus of the modern gay liberation movement and the continuing struggle surrounding LGBTQ

civil rights. “Through powerful artifacts, images and historic print publications, Rise Up will explore key moments of gay rights history, including the 1978 assassination of Harvey Milk, one of the country’s first openly gay elected officials; the AIDS crisis; U.S. Rep. Barney Frank’s public coming out in 1987; the efforts for hate crime legislation; the implementation and later repeal of ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’; and the fight for marriage equality. Rise Up will also look at popular culture’s role in influencing attitudes about the LGBTQ community through film, television

A SEASON STEEPED IN U.S. HISTORY AT SMITHSONIAN MUSEUMS The Smithsonian always has tons going on, but this season’s bounty is particularly rich. Over at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, history is being made with what SAAM describes as “the most comprehensive exhibition to examine the contemporary impact of the Vietnam War on American Art” - one “unprecedented in its

historical scale and depth.” The exhibition, Artists Respond: American Art and the Vietnam War, 1965-1975, is organized by Melissa Ho, the museum’s curator of 20th Century Art. It presents almost 100 works of art by 58 leading, provocative artists of the era, examining the huge impact the war had on their work. “I was really interested in following the thread of how the war changed American art,” Ho told Washington Post Art and Architecture Critic Philip Kennicott. “As I spoke to more and more artists who lived through this period…they were asking, ‘What is the relationship between what I am living through as a human being, as a social being, and where does that live in my work?’” The exhibition explores these

With time the definition expanded to include all facets of rising, dressing, and even meeting with visitors to discuss the news of the day. “Rather than an intimate, private moment, a woman’s toilette was often a performance before a large audience,” the museum’s website notes. GAME 3 RECAP

Hurricanes players skate to the bench Monday after Warren Foegele’s second-period goal.

CAPITALS AT HURRICANES | GAME 4: 7 P.M. THURSDAY, NBCSWA

No need to panic — yet Defending champs know better than to let one ugly loss affect their playoff hopes NHL PLAYOFFS Capitals fourth-line center Nic Dowd stood in the bowels of PNC Arena after the Capitals’ 5-0 loss to Carolina on Monday night. Stripped out of his pads and wearing casual team gear, he watched highlights from the game on a nearby TV. Standing in silence, eyes fixed on the replays in front of him, Dowd’s demeanor mirrored the rest of the Capitals’ dressing room. From center Nicklas Backstrom, to forward Lars Eller and captain Alex Ovechkin, the veteran group was calm. More than anything, the Capitals know this one game doesn’t decide the series and Washington showed no sense of panic heading into Thursday’s Game 4 in Carolina. “[Monday] was a little step back for us and now we have to take a step forward the next game,” Eller said. “We know what we’re capable of.” As defending Stanley Cup champions, the Capitals know how to regroup, move forward and bounce back. With a veteran

Fight lands Carolina rookie in concussion protocol Hurricanes rookie Andrei Svechnikov is in the concussion protocol after Capitals star Alex Ovechkin punched him, sending his head crashing onto the ice during Carolina’s 5-0 win over Washington. Coach Rod Brind’Amour said Tuesday that he assumes the 19-year-old Svechnikov, who was wearing a helmet, will miss Game 4 of the best-of-seven series Thursday night. He added he’s “going to be real careful” and is “certainly not going to rush him back.” The fight was only the fourth of Ovechkin’s career and the Capitals captain’s first since 2010. (AP/TWP)

Washington team still holding onto a 2-1 advantage in the bestof-seven series, the group has the experience and self-awareness to recognize its errors and what it takes to fix them. Washington won’t throw away the tape from the disappointing Game 3, according to Capitals coach Todd

Nats-Giants ended after Express’ deadline

Reirden. Instead, they will use it, like Dowd was trying to do just minutes after the game. “You’re obviously going to have your ups and downs through the playoffs, highs and lows, but overall you’ve just got to make sure you manage the game and make sure you do the right things at

the right time,” Backstrom said. “As this group maybe proved last year, we kept calm. If anything happens — you score a goal or you let in a goal — you’ve got to keep calm, I think, and make sure you stick to the game plan.” The Capitals are no strangers to playoff adversity. Last year, they climbed out of a 2-0 hole to open the first-round against Columbus, vanquished their demons by finally beating Pittsburgh in the second round, lost three straight after opening a 2-0 series lead against Tampa Bay, and then at last, bounced back after a Game 1 loss to Vegas in the Stanley Cup finals to win four straight en route to the franchise’s first Stanley Cup title. “We’re more prepared mentally and emotionally to handle stuff than we’ve ever been,” Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said before the playoffs started. “Having success in those critical moments, I think, gives everybody a little confidence that they can handle it.” SAMANTHA PELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TONI L. SANDYS PHOTOS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Was it as ugly as it looked for Caps? Yes. It’s hard to remember the Caps still have a 2-1 series lead after their 5-0 loss to Carolina in Game 3. It was one of their worst games of the season, and here are numbers to back that up. (TWP/AP/EXPRESS)

23

The number of minutes the Capitals went without a shot on net during a span that started midway through the first period and ended with 4:47 remaining in the second. Washington was outshot 45-18 in the game.

5

The number of goals allowed by Capitals goalie Braden Holtby, tied for the most he’s allowed in 85 playoff appearances. The 40 saves he recorded Monday were the most he’s ever had in a regulation playoff loss.

6-0

Washington’s record against the Hurricanes this season entering Monday. It was Carolina’s most lopsided playoff win since a 5-0 win over Edmonton in Game 2 of the 2006 Stanley Cup final.

U-Va.’s Guy entering NBA draft, could return to school

Russell Wilson is sticking around with the Seattle Seahawks as the highest-paid player in the NFL. Wilson posted a video on social media early Tuesday saying, “Seattle, we got a deal,” shortly after agreeing to a $140 million, four-year extension with the Seahawks, agent Mark Rodgers said. Wilson’s new deal runs through the 2023 season and includes a $65 million signing bonus, a no-trade clause and $107 million in guaranteed money. Wilson’s per-year average of $35 million tops Aaron Rodgers’ average annual salary of $33.5 million as part of the extension he signed last year with Green Bay. (AP)

DeMarcus Cousins has a torn left quadriceps muscle that will sideline the Golden State center indefinitely, a devastating injury that the Warriors feared was serious when he went down in the first quarter of their first-round playoff loss to the Clippers. An MRI exam Tuesday morning on Cousins’ left leg revealed the tear. The Warriors say Cousins will begin immediately on his rehabilitation and updates will be “provided as appropriate.” Coach Steve Kerr said after the Warriors’ 135-131 Game 2 loss on Monday night that Cousins would be out for a significant period of time. (AP)

Virginia’s Kyle Guy says he is entering the NBA draft. The junior guard announced his plans on Instagram on Tuesday. The 6-foot-2 shooting guard led the Cavaliers in scoring, averaging 15.4 points per game, and in 3-pointers with 120 for the year. Guy etched his name into Virginia lore during the national semifinals when he was fouled on a 3-point try with 0.6 seconds left and the Cavaliers trailing Auburn 62-60. He made all three free throws to propel Virginia into the national championship. Guy will sign with an agent, but has until May 29 to decide whether to leave school or return for his senior season. CRITIC’S NOTEBOOK

COLUMBIA RECORDS AND GETTY IMAGES/ EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION

On the ‘Road’ to virality

Lil Nas X’s genre-bending hit has spawned an entire ecosystem of YouTube videos MUSIC For many news sites, the coverage of Lil Nas X’s viral hit “Old Town Road” centered on one theme: Billboard’s role as country music’s gatekeeper. On YouTube, things were moving faster. The song had already been digested, meme’d, reacted to and dissected for an audience that generally isn’t paying attention to Billboard as closely. Lil Nas X released the song on YouTube (and SoundCloud) in December, pairing it with video clips from the wildly popular video game “Red Dead Redemption 2,” which is set in the Old West. The timing of the release aligned perfectly with a surge in country music memes, humorously referred to as the “yeehaw agenda” on Twitter. “Old Town Road” quickly became the

meme’s unofficial theme song. Four months after the original song’s release, it has been viewed more than 44 million times. But that tells only part of the story. Search the song name on YouTube, and there are 20plus videos that each have more than 1 million views. The way YouTubers have used the song to create new videos is a perfect example of the participatory appeal of the platform. There’s a whole ecosystem of supplementary content surrounding “Old Town Road” on YouTube, including exuberant reaction videos and simple lyrics videos that show text on screen as the music plays. One of those karaoke-ready videos already has 15 million views. Another has more than 2 million views. Not a bad return on what can’t

be much of a time investment. Once Billboard removed “Old Town Road” from its country chart, controversially deciding the track didn’t fit the genre, the song rode another wave of interest. Lil Nas X brought Billy Ray Cyrus in for a remix and YouTube’s music community sprung into action, ready to capitalize on the additional attention to an already viral song. YouTube reviewers and reactors created their videos at a dizzying pace. The “Old Town Road” remix was published April 4, and on the same day, dozens of reaction videos were already filling YouTube feeds. The incentive is clear: The faster you turn around those videos, the more likely you are to find eyeballs and grow your channel’s audience. Audience interest in a song

is generally proportional to the popularity of the artist, which is another factor at play. Lil Nas X joined in as well, posting a video of some of the meme mashups to his YouTube channel, which had been the only place where DJs could find his song. While a lot of artists passively watch as their songs move through different YouTube communities, the 20-year-old Lil Nas X is taking an active approach to distribution. At every turn, he has replicated what YouTubers have done for years — humorously leveraging mainstream media skepticism, in this case Billboard’s, to build his own audience. It’s working because it comes across as authentic, not opportunistic. He’s in on the jokes, and other YouTubers seem to love it. THOMAS JOHNSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Mary Tyler Moore Show’s’ Engel dies at 70 ‘M

Georgia Engel, who pla played the charmingly innocent, small-voiced Georgette on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” died Fri Friday in Princeton, N.J., at age 70. The cause of death was unknown because she was a Christian Sci Scientist and didn’t see doctors, said her friend and executor, John Quilty. Engel, a five-time Emmy no nominee, also had recurring roles on “Everybody Loves Raymond” and “Hot in Cleveland.” (AP) Deadline: “Spider-Man’s” Jon Watts in talks to direct Michael B. Jordan in “Methusaleh”

Norah Jones jazzes up her experiments Norah Jones became a jazz sweetheart overnight with her 2002 debut “Come Away With Me” but quickly established that she did not want to be boxed into one genre. “Begin Again,” her seven-single project released Friday, harnesses her ability to tap into other musical streams while maintaining a central jazz feel. The electronic influences here are less pronounced than on 2012’s “Little Broken Hearts” yet more present than on 2016’s “Day Breaks.” The distorted vocals on the track “Just a Little Bit” make the song playful. “A Song With No Name,” meanwhile, mixes the delicate with the experimental, striking a fantastic balance. As a collection of singles, this release is less concerned with generating a cohesive feel — perhaps allowing Jones more creative license song to song. RAGAN CLARK (AP)

Peter Gabriel’s latest revisits his reel classics ALBUM REVIEW If you’re a fan of Peter Gabriel, you probably know his popular hits like “Sledgehammer” and “Big Time,” as well as maybe some older classics like “Games Without Frontiers.” But even the most rabid of fans might not know that Gabriel recorded music for the 2012 political drama “The Reluctant Fundamentalist.” Or put a gem of a song in the 2017 animated film “Birds Like Us.” For those fans — and a reminder to everyone else of Gabriel’s impressive sonic mutability — comes “Rated PG,” a collection released Friday of 10 songs he’s supplied for films. Because each tune is married to its movie — from dark dramas to cute animated films, spanning decades — coherence is not baked into the new album. But as a showcase for a singular artist, it’s a welcome trip. Some of the songs are wellknown, like “In Your Eyes” — which is familiar thanks to John Cusack blasting it from a boombox in “Say Anything…” — or the anthemic “Down to Earth” from “WALL-E.” Others are welcome

remi nders of gems trapped in celluloid, like the frightening duet with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan “Taboo” ‘Rated PG’ from “Natural Peter Gabriel Born Killers.” But “Rated PG” also resurrects lost tracks that outshined their films, like “This Is Party Man” from the forgettable 1995 Denzel Washington flick “Virtuosity,” or the dark and slinky, previously unreleased “Noctural” from 2001’s “Les Morsures de l’Aube.” Gabriel superfans will finally get their hands on that track, as well as “Speak (Bol),”

which never made the official soundtrack for “The Reluctant Fundamentalist”; “That’ll Do,” a Randy Newman-written song that ended up on “Babe: Pig in the City”; and new edits of previously released songs. So rich is Gabriel’s catalogue that he hasn’t even added tracks from the film scores he composed for “Birdy” or “The Last Temptation of Christ.” Each entry on “Rated PG” is rich and, yes, cinematic. Each is complex with world beats or cleverly constructed synths. Each functions as a big, special cornerstone, like music playing as the credits roll. MARK KENNEDY (AP)

@VVIINNG, reacting to the fire that engulfed Notre Dame Cathedral on Monday.

By Tuesday, Victor Hugo’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” had topped Amazon’s best-sellers list in France. The original release of Hugo’s 1831 novel — which is set in Notre Dame and includes two chapters describing the structure — inspired the French government to begin renovating the cathedral in 1844.

@AHMEDEENUH, roasting Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry’s tweet that Tiger Woods’ Masters win on Sunday was the “greatest comeback story in sports.” The tweet didn’t age well. On Monday night, the Warriors blew a 31-point lead in a loss to the L.A. Clippers. Other Twitter users then reminded Curry of the 2016 NBA Finals, when the Warriors blew a 3-1 series lead to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

In one section of the interview with Alex Pappademas, Reeves goes on about sandwich bread, specifically how crispy ciabatta should be for a BLT. ACCIDENTS

You can’t be mad at a guy named Scooby

A fair excuse to play hooky from work In a phone call Tuesday, 54-year-old “Today” show host Hoda Kotb told her colleagues that she has adopted a second child. Hope Catherine joins 2-year-old sister Haley Joy, whom Kotb adopted in 2017. According to “Today,” Haley has already embraced her big-sister role. “This morning at breakfast, [Haley] was trying to feed [Hope] her raspberries,’’ Kotb said on the show. (AP/EXPRESS)

British tabloid The Sun reported Sunday that Benedict Cumberbatch hit a man with his car and was then slapped by his victim. Back in September, the 42-year-old actor was driving his Lamborghini on England’s Isle of Wight when he allegedly hit 63-year-old Michael Lawrence — also known as Scooby. “Scooby was on his brand-new bike when the car appeared out of nowhere,” a source told the outlet. Cumberbatch reportedly told him, “You were in the middle of the road,” before Lawrence slapped Cumberbatch in the face. Cumberbatch did not press criminal charges, but The Sun notes that Lawrence intends to sue the “Sherlock” star. (EXPRESS)
