Police have caught a man they say has been leaving decapitated chickens outside a Westport, Conn., home. Based on surveillance video, police tracked down New York City resident Ajamu Obataiye, 48, and charged him with a number of offenses. Police say decapitated chickens were left at the home on apparently random occasions over the past year. There’s no known connection between Obataiye and the homeowner. (AP)
A Harvard University residence hall is ending a decades-old tradition of skinning and barbecuing a goat in the courtyard, citing student discomfort with the tradition. The annual event began in the 1980s as a spinoff of a primitive survival course. After skinning the goat, students and house staff marinated it and then roasted it the next day on a spit over a bed of coals. Dunster will continue to hold a “goat roast,” but without an actual goat. (AP)
Detroit-area Roman Catholics have one more dining option during Lent than most Catholics. A longstanding permission allows local Catholics to eat muskrat “on days of abstinence,” according to the Archdiocese of Detroit. The custom dates to the 1700s. The Rev. Tim Laboe, who said he actually likes the taste himself, quoted a former church leader: “Anybody that eats muskrat is doing an act of penance worthy of the greatest of saints.” (AP)

Plan shifts to connect D.C. with Baltimore
Boring Company founder Elon Musk hopes to cut travel between Baltimore and D.C. to 15 minutes.
THE BORING COMPANY
TRANSPORTATION Elon Musk made a splash almost two years ago when he declared he had “verbal govt approval” to build an underground “Hyperloop” project that would get people from Washington to New York City in 29 minutes, cutting through Baltimore and Philadelphia along the way. Hyperloop passengers would shoot through vacuum tubes in pods traveling more than 600 miles per hour, according to Musk’s tunneling venture, The Boring Company. But the electric car pioneer’s latest take on that plan, detailed late Wednesday in a report considering environmental impacts, is to build two 35-mile tunnels from D.C. to Baltimore that would carry autonomous Teslas or their corporate cousins at 150 miles per hour, on rubber tires, getting from city to city in about 15 minutes. The 505-page environmental assessment from federal and Maryland state transportation officials shows how Musk’s original vision has, depending on one’s perspective, either shrunk wildly or begun to sprout in intriguing ways. Unanswered in the report, however, are questions on the cost, safety, and practicality of

the effort. Among a host of federal, state and local issues yet to be resolved is how Musk would compensate the National Park Service for building under the BaltimoreWashington Parkway. The current proposal calls for a “land
exchange,” in which Musk’s company gives the Park Service land “of approximately equal value” in exchange for an easement giving it the right to build the tunnels. The project, while being proposed by The Boring Company, is formally sponsored by the Maryland State Highway Administration, which worked with the Federal Highway Administration in preparing the draft environmental assessment. There will be a 45-day public comment period. Federal and state officials will review the public responses, and federal highway officials will determine if the impacts are considered “significant” enough to warrant a more extensive environmental review under federal law. Maryland transportation department spokeswoman Erin Henson declined to characterize the potential environmental impacts or project benefits. The report on what is now called simply “Loop” is notable for what it says the project will not do. Despite the early talk of transformation, it “would not change travel patterns in the region,” the report said. As for Musk’s original “Hyper” version, the “Loop tunnels could potentially serve as Hyperloop corridors,” according to the assessment. “However, the potential future use of Hyperloop technology is currently unknown.” MICHAEL LARIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Pollen levels spike with more to come If you’ve been sniffling and sneezing more than usual this week, there’s an explanation. Propelled by mild temperatures, partial sunshine and gentle breezes, tree pollen levels have leaped to their highest level of the year. The U.S. Army Centralized Allergen Extract Lab, which measures the amount of pollen in the air, reported the tree pollen count spiked to 1,695.85 grains per cubic meter of air Tuesday. This is a “very high” count, according to Susan Kosisky, a microbiologist who directs the lab. She said D.C. averages around three to four days a year when tree pollen counts climb at least as high as they were Tuesday. Tree counts should start to dip in May, but then grass counts start ascending. (TWP)

Study: Uber drivers in D.C. don’t feel safe Report also found that one-third reported falling into ‘debt trap’
TRANSPORTATION A Georgetown University study of 40 Uber drivers in the D.C. region released Thursday found some thought the work “unsustainable,” with one-third reporting assaults or safety concerns and saying they went into debt to drive on the platform. Based on interviews conducted in 2016, the study found 30 percent of the drivers were concerned about their safety. One driver told researchers of being robbed at gunpoint; another said he was assaulted after turning down drugs from a passenger. “Though questions of safety are often directed at passengers in the ride-hailing industry, this study reveals that physical threats and safety questions are pressing in Uber’s new workplace,” concluded the study, conducted through the university’s Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor. The study said 33 percent of drivers fell into a “debt trap” working for Uber, taking on debt to drive. One driver said that he took out a $35,000 loan to buy a Lincoln Town Car in 2012 after being approved to drive for Uber Black and that he initially earned more than he did driving a taxi.

A study found that Uber drivers in D.C. spoke of “falling asleep at the wheel, constant exhaustion, and the worry of finding a safe place to urinate.”
After Uber changed its policy about how old a car could be in this elite fleet, his vehicle no longer qualified, and he went bankrupt, the study said. All the drivers in the study said they had problems calculating their compensation because of Uber’s “slippery” wage — “a complex and difficult-to-track set of earnings and expenses” that changes as the platform changes its fees and algorithms, as the study put it. Uber has reduced the base rate paid to drivers since it came to Washington in 2011, raised its commissions and added a “rider safety fee,” among others, according to the study. Although Uber ended its autoleasing program in 2017 after financial losses and criticism
it exploited drivers with bad credit, it “still advertises thirdparty leases at similar rates to drivers,” the study said. “The debt trap and slippery wage mean that the Uber workplace resembles a casino where drivers must pay-to-play the game of work,” the study said. It added: “Drivers spoke with us about falling asleep at the wheel, constant exhaustion, and the worry of finding a safe place to urinate. The work was draining, unsustainable, and, for many, a challenge to their well-being.” In a statement, an Uber spokesman said the company “has changed a lot since this research was started,” citing in-app tipping and rewards programs for drivers. After being groped on a Metro train, one woman said reporting the offense was emotionally trying.
DC RIDER | KERY MURAKAMI
Do not touch: Being groped on Metro starts a painful ride It was the second weekend of spring, and as she rode the Green Line that lovely Saturday morning, Megan was thrilled to be lightened of her heavy winter coat. “I was doing the most D.C. thing possible,” she said. “I was going to the Cherry Blossom Kite Festival at the Washington Monument.” A touch changed everything. Megan, 23, was groped as she got off the train at L’Enfant Plaza. In the weeks since, she has been forced to relive over and over the feel of the man’s hand and the memory of being sexually assaulted years earlier. She has felt lows when police didn’t seem to care about what happened to her. She felt highs when it seemed they did. But ultimately she’s been left with disappointment, and the sense that reporting sexual harassment should have been much easier. “I feel really
exhausted,” she said. Megan’s ordeal really began more than four years ago, when she was sexually assaulted at a college party. The details aren’t relevant here, but years of flashbacks and nightmares followed. She had worked hard to move on, and on that spring morning, the assault was far from her mind. Her train pulled in to L’Enfant Plaza round 10:30. As she was getting off, a man getting on grabbed her thigh and kept his hand there. She froze, and that college party roared back. After, Megan wandered through the station crying. “It brings up the same feelings of total violation, that I’m not in control of my body,” she said. Metro would later say that “a person of interest” in Megan’s groping didn’t stop there: Four hours later, as he rode down an escalator at the Columbia Heights station, he punched a woman riding up, and escaped. But the connection hadn’t
Chief of toll operations for Maryland abruptly resigned this week
been made yet the next day, when Megan filled out Metro’s online form to report harassment. On Monday, she called a sexual assault hotline and began talking to D.C. and Metro detectives. There seemed to be confusion. She’d have to tell her story seven times over the next few days — each time bringing back that college party — until she hit a low point. “I cried the whole day yesterday,” she said that Friday. “I could barely work.” A detective had also told her he was going to be away and nothing would happen for a week. It felt like those who are supposed to protect her thought her case could wait. But last Wednesday, detectives told her they’d identified a suspect from security tapes and thought he was involved in the Columbia Heights assault. They were seeking warrants for both incidents. An arrest — and a bit of closure — seemed close. The next day, detectives informed her their 28-year-old suspect, Rivera C. Barnett, was already in jail in Arlington for an unrelated offense and would be there for at least a month. Metro police had issued a warrant for his arrest in the Columbia Heights attack. But prosecutors didn’t think there was enough evidence to charge him for what happened to Megan.
By last Thursday night Megan was spent. And she was still skeptical that police were genuinely concerned about what happened to her. “I have the sense that something more violent had to happen,” she said. “Without the other assault, nothing would have happened with what happened to me.” And the incident continues to haunt her. When she was groped, she had looked down at the man’s hand and not at his face. Now when she’s out and about, “I feel like I have a responsibility to remember everybody,” she said. Coincidentally, Metro last week began an anti-sexual harassment campaign. Megan stopped by L’Enfant Plaza last Wednesday to see. Near where several Metro police officers and detectives were distributing handouts, she sat trembling as she looked at the brochure. It suggested that bystanders should intervene by finding an excuse to talk to the victim. “Distract by asking, ‘Do you know how to get to L’Enfant Plaza?’ ” it said. But nothing was aimed at harassers. “What about saying, ‘Just stop touching people?’ ” Megan said. Reach Kery Murakami at kery.murakami@washpost.com. Follow him @theDCrider.

Amid disputes, Purple Line gets new CEO TRANSPORTATION The team of companies designing and building Maryland’s Purple Line has replaced its CEO, hoping a new leader will resolve disputes with the state over construction delays and potential cost overruns in the $5.6 billion publicprivate partnership, a project spokesman said Wednesday. The change comes as the private consortium, known as Purple Line Transit Partners (PLTP), and the Maryland Transit Administration have been ensnared in a debate over when the 16-mile line will begin carrying passengers and how much each side should pay to offset delays and accelerate work. PLTP has said the Purple Line can’t carry passengers until March 2023 — a year behind the contract’s opening date — and then only if the state pays an additional $300 million. However, a top Maryland transit official said recently that the state still believes the light-rail line can open by late 2022 and that the two sides are “still far apart” on any agreement about schedule changes or cost overruns. As of Monday, Peter van der Waart has replaced Fred Craig as chief executive of PLTP, said spokesman John Undeland. The companies are designing and building the Purple Line between Montgomery and Prince George’s counties and helping to finance its construction. They also will operate and maintain the system for 30 years. KATHERINE SHAVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Short-circuit likely set Notre Dame ablaze
OCEAN HIERARCHY
What do sharks fear? Killer whales.
PARIS Paris police investigators think an electrical short-circuit most likely caused the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral, a police official said Thursday, as France paid a daylong tribute to the firefighters who saved the worldrenowned landmark. A judicial police official told The Associated Press that investigators made an initial assessment of the cathedral Wednesday but don’t have a green light to search Notre Dame’s charred interior because of ongoing safety hazards. The cathedral’s fragile walls were being shored up with wooden planks, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak by name about an ongoing investigation. Investigators so far believe the fire was accidental, and are questioning both cathedral staff and workers who were carrying out renovations. Some 40 people had been questioned by Thursday, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office. The police official would not comment on an unsourced report in Le Parisian newspaper that investigators are looking at whether the fire could have been linked to a computer glitch

or the temporary elevators used in the renovation work, among other things. The prosecutor’s office said only that “all leads must be explored.” Since the cathedral will be closed to the public for years, the rector of the Catholic parish that worships there has proposed building a temporary structure on the plaza in front of the Gothic-era landmark, and City Hall gave its approval Thursday “subject to technical restraints.” President Emmanuel Macron has said he wants Notre Dame to be restored in five years, in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics, which Paris is hosting. Earlier Thursday, Macron

Paris City Hall also held a ceremony in the firefighters’ honor Thursday afternoon, with a Bach violin concert, two giant banners strung from the monumental city headquarters and readings from Victor Hugo’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” ELAINE GANLEY AND
Even “Jaws” is afraid of killer whales. A new study published in Nature this week showed that when pods of orcas entered an area around South Farallon Island off the coast of San Francisco, the great white sharks in the area cleared out — and didn’t return for months. “We had 17 sharks that we were tracking simultaneously at the island when a group of orcas showed up,” said study leader Salvador Jorgensen of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. “We were able to see from the data all the sharks leaving the side of the island the orcas had arrived on, and within a few hours had vacated the island completely.” (THEWASHINGTON POST)

‘Bubble boy disease’ cured with HIV’s help HEALTH They were born without a working germ-fighting system, every infection a threat to their lives. Now eight babies with “bubble boy disease” have seen it fixed by a gene therapy made from one of the immune system’s worst enemies — HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. A study out this week details how scientists turned this enemy virus into a savior, altering it so it couldn’t cause disease and then using it to deliver a gene the boys lacked. “This therapy has cured the patients,” but it will take more time to see if it’s a permanent fix, said Dr. Ewelina Mamcarz, one of the study leaders at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. The babies included Gael Jesus Pino Alva, above, who is now 2, and Omarion Jordan, who is almost 1. He had the therapy in December to treat severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome, or SCID. “For a long time we didn’t know what was wrong with him. He just kept getting these infections,” said Omarion’s mother, Kristin Simpson. Omarion now has a normal immune system. “He’s like a normal, healthy baby,” Simpson said. “I think it’s amazing.” Study results were published by the New England Journal of Medicine. The treatment was pioneered by St. Jude’s Dr. Brian Sorrentino, who recently died. MARILYNN MARCHIONE (AP)

American Media Inc. is selling the National Enquirer for $100 million to James Cohen, CEO of Hudson News. The supermarket tabloid, along with two sister publications — the National Examiner and the Globe — will be purchased by the head of the travel retailer known for its airport newsstands. The Enquirer is overseen by AMI President and CEO David Pecker, a longtime confidant of President Trump, whose efforts to tilt the 2016 presidential election have been the subject of many news stories. The sale price of $100 million is a stunning figure for a scandal-ridden tabloid.
A college philosophy teacher was arrested Wednesday night after entering St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City carrying two cans of gasoline, lighter fluid and butane lighters. The man, Marc Lamparello, 37, had also been arrested at a New Jersey cathedral this week and had booked a Thursday flight to Rome, the New York Police Department said. Lamparello is facing charges including attempted arson and reckless endangerment after his arrest at the New York City landmark. Police said there did not appear “any connection to any terrorist group or any terroristrelated intent.” (AP)
The Washington state Senate narrowly passed a measure late Wednesday that would make it harder for parents to opt out of vaccinating their children against the measles in response to the serious outbreak in the state. The bill, which would eliminate personal or philosophical exemptions from the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, is a victory for public health advocates. It is expected to pass the House and be signed into law by Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee. It would be the first time in four years that a state has removed personal exemptions in the face of growing anti-vaccine sentiment. (TWP)

Key takeaways from report President Trump may not have obstructed justice, but it wasn’t for lack of trying. Robert Mueller’s 448-page report takes the American public inside the room with Trump as he reacted to news of the probe’s initiation — “This is the end of my presidency. I’m f----d,” he said — and made several attempts to get the people around him to curtail the probe into his campaign and Russian interference in the 2016 election. Ultimately, Mueller found Trump’s inner circle saved him from himself. They refused to carry out orders that could have crossed the line into obstructing justice. Here are some of the biggest takeaways from the report:
Mueller details several occasions of this. Some occurred in public, while others behind closed doors. Trump ordered his White House counsel to try to have Mueller removed. He directed his former campaign manager to deliver a message to then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions to make a public statement calling the investigation “very unfair.” He also wanted Sessions to announce that Trump had done “nothing wrong” and to say that the investigation’s scope had been limited. But people around Trump either refused or quietly allowed the matters to drop. “The president’s efforts to influence the investigation were mostly unsuccessful, but that is largely because the persons who surrounded the president declined to carry out orders or accede to his requests,” the special counsel wrote.
There was no collusion, but also no exoneration Barr was generally right weeks ago when he released Mueller’s key findings. The special counsel did not find a criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and the Russian government to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. He did not recommend charging any Trump associates as agents of the Russian government or with campaign finance violations.
But on the question of obstruction, Mueller said there was evidence on both sides of the question. He said some of Trump’s actions related to potential “garden variety” obstruction. “If we had confidence after a thorough investigation of the facts that the president clearly did not commit obstruction of justice, we would so state. Based on the facts and the applicable legal standards, we are unable to reach that judgment,” Mueller wrote.
Is the release of the report good or bad for Trump? It depends on who you ask. Trump’s legal team claimed “complete vindication” by the report, and Barr emphasized at his news conference that there was no evidence of collusion. Trump even tweeted a “Game of Thrones” themed meme, saying “For the haters and the radical left Democrats — Game Over.” But the report describes a president driven to interfere in the probe out of fear that it would “call into question the legitimacy of his election” and his own uncertainty that his family or associates may have violated the law. Mueller wrote that on multiple occasions Trump did things that were “capable of exerting undue influence over law enforcement investigations.” Some of that was in private, one-on-one encounters that witnesses relayed to the special counsel. But the president’s public acts

also raised questions that they could have led witnesses to feel intimidated or alter their testimony, moves that Mueller said were equally threatening to the “justice system’s integrity.”
Ignorance was a defense in Trump Tower meeting That was the case for Donald Trump Jr. and a Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer. In June 2016, Trump Jr. agreed to take the meeting despite it being described in emails as part of a Russian government effort to help his father. Trump Jr. was looking for dirt that could be used against Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. The meeting raised questions about whether Trump Jr. and others violated the federal ban on foreign contributions to American political campaigns. But Mueller, who interviewed many of the participants in the meeting, said he didn’t find that he could bring a case. The special counsel wrote that it was unlikely the government could prove that Trump, Jr. and others in the

Mueller felt he couldn’t charge Trump —even in secret The report reveals some of Mueller’s reasoning behind why he didn’t reach a conclusion on the question of obstruction. He says that he would have exonerated Trump if he could have, but he wasn’t able to given the evidence he uncovered. Still, Mueller said that the Justice Department’s opinion that a sitting president couldn’t be indicted meant he also couldn’t recommend Trump be criminally charged, even if he made the recommendation in secret. That’s because Trump could not defend himself during a public trial while in office. In announcing the release of the redacted report, Attorney General William Barr said he asked Mueller during a meeting in early March about the matter. Mueller replied that he didn’t recommend charges against Trump solely because a sitting president can’t be indicted, Barr said. CHAD DAY (AP)

Warren: It’s a disgrace to see attorney general act like Trump publicist POLITICS The special counsel’s report on possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russians to interfere in the 2016 election is extremely detailed with only modest redactions — painting a starkly different picture for the president than Attorney General William Barr has offered, and revealing new details about interactions between Russians and Trump associates. Barr addressed the media before releasing the 448-page report. He made repeated references to “collusion,” echoing language the president has stressed even though it is not a legal term. Barr also spoke about the
president’s state of mind as Trump responded to the unfolding investigation. “As the Special Counsel’s report acknowledges, there is substantial evidence to show that the president was frustrated and angered by a sincere belief that the investigation was undermining his presidency, propelled by his political opponents, and fueled by illegal leaks,” Barr said. Barr was 20 minutes into his news conference when the first Democratic candidate for president took to social media to express his displeasure. The ice-breaker was Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., who tweeted “No one is above the rule of law … unless you’re frustrated that is.” His fellow candidates echoed those sentiments. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., tweeted: “The American People deserve the

truth. Not spin from a Trump Appointee.” Washington Gov. Jay Inslee called the news conference “a disgrace.” Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D.Mass., tweeted, “It’s a disgrace to see an Attorney General acting as if he’s the personal attorney and publicist for the President of the United States.” After the news conference, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.,
released a joint statement. They said: “The differences are stark” between what Barr and Mueller said on potential obstruction of justice by Trump — a sign that congressional Democrats will press further on the issue. “As we continue to review the report, one thing is clear: Attorney General Barr presented a conclusion that the president did not obstruct justice while Mueller’s report appears to undercut that finding,” they said. “It stands as a tribute to the hard work of the team of FBI agents and lawyers who, despite the endless stream of attacks on law enforcement from this Administration, worked for two years to find the facts and the truth,” he said.

“Now the tables have turned, and it’s time to investigate the liars who instigated this sham investigation into President Trump, motivated by political retribution and based on no evidence whatsoever,” he said.
Report release clashes with 24/7 news cycle MEDIA The release of a dense report on the results of a two-year investigation is an event uniquely unsuited to today’s minute-byminute news cycles. That was the challenge faced Thursday by journalists who finally got to see special counsel Robert Mueller’s findings on the Russia investigation. Reporters scrambled through stacks of paper with blacked-out portions to glean highlights. Anchors asked colleagues, “What have you found?” Mueller’s report was released shortly after 11 a.m., following Attorney General William Barr’s press conference Then, the networks largely ignored — or showed in delayed, truncated form — a Trump White House appearance where he commented on the findings. Journalists were warned in advance to take time to digest the news before talking about it or interviewing opinionated guests. But that ignores a hypercompetitive world with airtime and web pages to fill. Rudolph Giuliani, Trump’s lawyer, was on Fox News Channel within a half hour of the report’s release. Television networks used chyrons to flag findings, like: “Trump to Sessions Upon Recusal: ‘You Were Supposed to Protect Me,’” seen on MSNBC. On YouTube, Vice News showed a reporter, sitting at a table with a framed picture of Mueller, reading the document. DAVID BAUDER (AP)

bullets fly, she said. “There’s never a time limit. We don’t get ‘over it.’ We hope we learn to get through it and cope,” Gurwitch said. Survivors of the Columbine attack, which killed 12 Colorado students and a teacher on April 20, 1999, started The Rebels Project, which is part of a loose nationwide network of survivors of mass attacks. The groups reach out after each shooting. They held a packed meeting for survivors and parents in Parkland this month, describing how they have learned to cope over the years through therapy, exercise and hobbies, and assuring the Florida community that their pain is normal. “We are one family,” said meeting organizer Mike Dempsey, a survivor of 9/11 and the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting. “What helped me after 9/11 was that Oklahoma City bombing survivors drove all the way up to New York to help us. They weren’t mental health professionals, but they were able to offer comfort

and outreach and just to let us know: ‘We’ve been through this.’ ” Some students who were not physically wounded minimize their trauma and don’t seek help because they try to convince themselves they were lucky, said Columbine survivor Heather Martin, who co-founded The Rebels Project. “You can’t measure trauma in that way,” Martin said. Still, she said people need to seek help when they feel ready, not when others think they should. Marjory Stoneman sophomore Julia Brighton said she’s attempted suicide four times in the year since she watched the gunman shoot through the window of her English class, killing three friends. Despite an outpouring of community support and a bevy of mental health services, Brighton said she still felt ashamed to seek help. After months of therapy, she said she realized “there’s nothing to be afraid of because it made me a better person in the long run.” TERRY SPENCER, KELLI KENNEDY AND COLLEEN SLEVIN (AP)

EDUCATION Alex Rozenblat can still hear the cries of a wounded boy calling for help as she hid from the gunfire that killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last year. Talking to therapists at the school in Parkland, Fla., didn’t help. Each session had a different counselor, and she found herself rehashing traumas she had already expressed. She would rather turn to her friends, who understand what she went through. “There is slight pressure to get better as quickly as you can, and since it’s been a year, everyone thinks that you are better,” the 16-year-old said. The mental health resources after a school shooting range from therapy dogs and grief counselors at school to support groups, art therapy and in-home counseling. But there is no blueprint for dealing with the trauma because each tragedy, survivor and community is different. The struggle is getting them to seek help in the first place. In the two decades since the Columbine High School massacre, a network of survivors has emerged, reaching out to the newest victims to offer support that many say they prefer to traditional therapy. As the anguish festers, the danger grows, illustrated by the recent suicides of two Marjory Stoneman Douglas survivors and a father whose young child died in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. “It changes the community,” said psychologist Robin Gurwitch, a trauma specialist at Duke University Medical Center. Grief, troubling memories and emotions can bubble up any time for survivors and even community members who didn’t see the
NATIONAL SECURITY North Korea said Thursday that it had test-fired a new type of “tactical guided weapon,” its first such test in nearly half a year, and demanded that Washington remove Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from nuclear negotiations. The test, which didn’t appear to be of a banned mid- or long-range ballistic missile that could scuttle negotiations, allows North Korea to show its people it is pushing ahead with weapons development while also reassuring domestic military officials worried that diplomacy with the U.S. signals weakness. Separately, the North Korean Foreign Ministry accused Pompeo of playing down the significance of comments by leader Kim Jong Un, who said last week that Washington has until the end of the year to offer mutually acceptable terms for an agreement to salvage the highstakes nuclear diplomacy. Both the demand for Pompeo’s removal from the talks and the weapon test point to North Korea’s displeasure with the deadlocked negotiations over disarmament and sanctions. Meanwhile, the Kremlin announced Thursday that Kim will visit Russia this month in a meeting that offers President Vladimir Putin an opportunity to emerge as a broker in the longrunning nuclear standoff and raise Russia’s profile in regional affairs. WEEK 7
Opener, closer will be tough matchups
The NFC North could be big trouble
AFC East teams are mostly rebuilding
Defense will face several young QBs
There’s ample revenge potential
The Redskins won’t be able to ease into their schedule. They’ll play four playoff teams, including the Super Bowl champion Patriots, in the first five weeks (at Eagles, vs. Cowboys, vs. Bears, at Giants, vs. Patriots). A slow start could put Washington in a hole in the NFC East before the calendar turns to October. Then, when it’s time for a potential playoff push, December will bring road games against Cam Newton and the Panthers and Aaron Rodgers and the Packers before a three-week closing stretch against division rivals in the Eagles, Giants and Cowboys. The regularseason finale will be in Dallas.
The Redskins face what could be a loaded NFC North, which has at least three teams considered contenders to win the division. It starts with the Bears, the reigning division champs with one of the league’s best defenses and superstar pass rusher Khalil Mack. In Minnesota, Kirk Cousins became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for at least 4,000 yards and complete 70 percent of his passes with 30 touchdown passes and 10 or fewer picks. The Packers, with new coach Matt LaFleur, spent big in free agency to upgrade the NFL’s 22nd-ranked scoring defense — and, of course, still have Aaron Rodgers.
Let’s start with the obvious — facing the Patriots will be a challenge. The Super Bowl champs are positioned to win an 11th consecutive AFC East title. But the division’s other teams are rebuilding. The Dolphins have started over under new coach Brian Flores, and traded QB Ryan Tannehill and signed veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Bills used free agency to retool last season’s 30th-ranked offense, but they still lack playmakers around second-year QB Josh Allen and feature older running backs in LeSean McCoy and Frank Gore. The Jets, who added running back Le’Veon Bell, have the chance to be much improved but are coming off a 4-12 season.
While the soon-to-be 42-year-old Tom Brady is the headliner among opposing quarterbacks on Washington’s schedule, he’s not the only QB they have to worry about. The Redskins will face several of the game’s most promising young passers. These include Josh Allen (Bills), Sam Darnold (Jets), Carson Wentz (Eagles), Mitchell Trubisky (Bears), Jimmy Garoppolo (49ers) and Dak Prescott (Cowboys). Add to that list talented veterans like Kirk Cousins and Matt Stafford (Lions), who are in their primes. Oh, and the Redskins also face former league MVPs in Cam Newton (Panthers) and Aaron Rodgers for good measure.
The Redskins have watched several key contributors move to other teams in recent years, and they will see several of them in 2019. The biggest showdown fans should anticipate will be a trip to Minnesota to face Kirk Cousins. He signed a fully guaranteed, $84 million contract last offseason with the Vikings. Jamison Crowder played the first four seasons of his career with Washington before signing a $28.5 million free agent deal with the Jets in March. The Jets also feature former Redskins center Spencer Long. Preston Smith, Washington’s 2015 second-round pick, signed a $52 million contract with the Packers this offseason.

Lefty carries no-hitter into fifth inning, fans nine with just one walk
the season, and Sean Doolittle, though he allowed his first run of the season, secured his second save. The mostly drama-free victory gave the Nationals (9-8) the three-game series and sent them on a six-game trip to Miami and Colorado on a positive note. Doolittle noted that the team needed a springboard for the trip, pointing out that although the Marlins and Rockies are “not playing their best right now,” the Nationals will return home to play San Diego and St. Louis, which are “both playing really well.” From the first batter Thursday — a four-pitch strikeout of Steven Duggar — Corbin was locked in. The lefty flew through the early innings, dominating the Giants (8-12) with a steady diet of his
NATIONALS 4, GIANTS 2 The Nationals settled for a 4-2 win Thursday afternoon as Patrick Corbin deftly mixed his pitches and carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning at Nationals Park. He left after 7 2/3 innings with just one run and nine strikeouts on his ledger, improving to 1-0. He touched his cap as he exited in acknowledgment of the cheers. “It feels great,” said Corbin, who was the Nationals’ No. 1 free agent signing this offseason. “My first win here as a Nat.” Reliever Kyle Barraclough followed Corbin by stranding his first inherited runner of
wipeout pitch, a roughly 80 mph slider that he mixed with sinkers, four-seam fastballs and the occasional change-up. “When he can throw strikes on both sides of the plate, he’s tough,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. The second time through the order, Corbin zagged. He countered what hitters had seen the first time by using his slider to set up his sinker. Three of the first four Giants hitters to face Corbin a second time ended atbats frozen as a sinker zoomed by for strike three. “We all know at any point and any time, he can throw that slider,” catcher Yan Gomes said. “Maybe [people] are starting to notice [the sinker] more because his sinker is becoming a true lefthanded sinker.” SAM FORTIER (TWP)

Pimlico among tracks phasing out a medication
Gymnastics seeks its one shining moment
After years of debate, NCAA gymnastics has changed its postseason format to be more viewer-friendly. When the national championship wraps up this weekend in Fort Worth, and on ESPNU, it will do so with a Final Four for the first time. What happened to ignite change after all these years? “ESPN falling in love with our sport,” said Margie Foster Cunningham, the longtime coach at George Washington. “We didn’t want to miss that opportunity.” (TWP) Longtime Chicago sportscaster Chet Coppock dies at 70
Several major tracks, including Pimlico, Churchill Downs and Belmont, have agreed to phase out the use of an anti-bleeding medication starting next year followed by the elimination of Lasix in stakes races in 2021. In 2021, the Triple Crown would be run for the first time under the new rules regarding race-day medication. (AP)

Soccer players in England are backing a 24-hour boycott of social media to demand a crackdown on racial abuse on the platforms. The Professional Footballers’ Association has gathered support from players and FIFA to stay off Twitter, Facebook and Instagram from 9 a.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Saturday. Watford captain Troy Deeney, who was targeted with racial abuse on Instagram earlier this month, said “on Friday we are sending a message to anyone that abuses players — or anyone else — whether from the crowd or online, that we won’t tolerate it within football.” (AP)
Hakim Hart, a shooting guard from Philadelphia, announced Thursday he will join Maryland for the 2019-20 season. Hart played for Roman Catholic High School, earning first-team all-state honors as a senior. The two-star recruit previously committed to Saint Joseph’s, but he reopened his recruitment after the school fired coach Phil Martelli. (TWP)

Corbin stops the Giants for his first win as a Nat
The Washington Redskins locked up a key member of their defensive line for several more seasons Thursday by agreeing to a three-year contract extension with Matt Ioannidis, 25. The deal will pay him $21.75 million and includes $3 million in incentives, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement. A fifthround pick in 2016, he blossomed the past two seasons under defensive line coach Jim Tomsula with 58 total tackles and 12 sacks. Last year, he had 7.5 sacks and six tackles for loss. He also recorded 11 quarterback hits.

Joyce (Chrissy Metz), John (Marcel Ruiz) and their pastor (Topher Grace) in “Breakthrough.”
A touch of cold comfort Christian drama ‘Breakthrough’ serves up a miracle but doesn’t delve much deeper
FILM Of the many ways for a child to almost die, being submerged in frigid water is one of the more survivable. The body conserves heat for the vital organs, and the cold slows oxygen depletion in the brain. No one mentions this phenomenon in “Breakthrough,” a movie meant for viewers with a hankering for miracles. Based on an actual incident in 2015, the Christian drama presents divine intervention and a mother’s love as what saved the life of a boy who accidentally breaks thin ice and spends 15 minutes underwater. The kid is John (Marcel Ruiz), a normal 14-year-old in suburban Missouri. Although he’s doing
well at his evangelical school, at home he spars with his mother, Joyce (Chrissy Metz of “This Is Us”). Yet when he’s rushed to the hospital without a pulse, only Mom possesses the indomitable belief to pray him back to life. That’s the essence of the story told in “The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother’s Faith and Her Child’s Resurrection,” the 2017 book written by Joyce Smith with Ginger Kolbaba. “Breakthrough” follows the book’s scenario while adding some feel-good embroidery. The result won’t sway nonbelievers, but is mostly watchable and occasionally even moving. At the hospital, Joyce is joined by her new pastor, Jason (Topher Grace), and John’s father (Josh
‘Breakthrough’ (PG, 116 min.) DIRECTOR: Roxann Dawson STARS: Chrissy Metz, Josh Lucas, Topher Grace, Dennis Haysbert IN A NUTSHELL: A mother refuses to give up hope after her adopted son falls through an icy lake and is hospitalized with a grim prognosis.
Lucas), who recoils from the sight of his suffering son. Acclaimed Dr. Garrett (Dennis Haysbert) warns that John will never be the same, while Tommy (Mike Colter), the atheist firefighter who pulled the boy from the water, becomes convinced that God instructed him how to rescue John.
Director Roxann Dawson makes the dramatic scenes plausible and not overly didactic. But she and screenwriter Grant Nieporte (whose “Seven Pounds” script was actually cornier than this one) allow themselves some scenes that might work better in a high school musical. At a crucial juncture, an impromptu choir masses outside the hospital to sing a gospel hymn. The film offers many such moments of affirmation, but also an epilogue in which a woman demands to know why John was spared and her husband wasn’t. “Breakthrough” glibly peddles miracles but is honest enough to admit that not everybody gets one. ‘Barry,’ ‘Pose’ among Peabody Award winners
“Barry,” “Pose,” “Killing Eve” and “The Good Place” have won Peabody Awards in the entertainment category, the Peabody Board announced Thursday. This year’s honors also went to “Random Acts of Flyness,” “Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj,” “The Americans,” “The End of the F---ing World” and Hannah Gadsby’s “Nanette.” The awards recognize excellence in radio, TV and online media. ‘Her Smell’ R, 135 min.
Starring Elisabeth Moss as a riot-grrrl rock-diva who seems to be well on her way to drinking and dramaqueening herself to death, “Her Smell” is a fierce and intoxicating performance sloshing around in a halfempty Solo cup of a movie. Writer-director Alex Ross Perry invites us to observe the degradation and redemption of an artist close up, without first giving us a reason to care. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)
‘Girls of the Sun’ Unrated, 115 min.
“Girls of the Sun” is a film of admirable ambition, written and directed by Eva Husson and inspired by real-life female Yazidi fighters. As a chronicle of the grievous effects of ISIS’ tyrannical reign in Iraq, the film has an important subject, indeed. As a movie, though, this is a swing and a miss, faltering and buckling under its own noble intentions. ANN HORNADAY (TWP)

Lorraine Toussaint, left, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw share an intimate mother-daughter moment in “Fast Color.”
‘Fast Color’ slows down the superhero cliches Grounded characters carry a movie that skips the bloated spectacle FILM REVIEW The origins of modern superheroes can be found in classical myth and legend. That’s easy to forget now that every comic-book movie arrives with an endless chorus of excitement and hype. “Fast Color,” the low-budget superhero film from director Julia Hart, strips away many of the genre’s bells and whistles. By whittling its apocalyptic premise down to the scale of a modest drama, the film explores superheroes at their most mythical, finding genuine resonance along the way. At first, the film unfolds like a thriller. Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Ruth, a young woman on the run. Her predicament is not explained, but her desperation is real: She is prone to violent seizures that shake the walls surrounding her (literally), and every friendly face may be a government scientist who wants to perform invasive tests. She
‘Fast Color’ (PG-13, 100 min.) DIRECTOR: Julia Hart STARS: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Lorraine Toussaint, David Strathairn IN A NUTSHELL: A young woman with supernatural power goes on the run, taking refuge with her mother and estranged daughter.
finally makes her way to an isolated home where her mother, Bo (Lorraine Toussaint), lives with Ruth’s estranged daughter, Lila (Saniyya Sidney). Their reunion is tense — Ruth is a recovering drug addict — but still they are able to bond over the supernatural abilities they share. Atmosphere is key to the film’s success. Hart and her co-screenwriter, Jordan Horowitz, imagine a barren landscape where water is a scarce resource. They do not see a breakdown of society and instead prefer a more incremental approach: This is a future where everything is simply worse than what we’re used to now. Race and gender are important undercurrents to the film. Ruth
and Bo, both black women, want to teach Lila what it takes to live in a country that’s indifferent or even hostile to that identity. All of Ruth’s pursuers are white men, and they do not understand her potential, background or spirituality. Their attempt to “tame” Ruth is where the film finds an allegorical dimension. “Fast Color” is ultimately about black women whose power is misunderstood and how they sacrifice their individuality for the greater good. “Fast Color” succeeds on the strength of its ideas. Superhero movies do not need huge budgets or A-list actors to connect with audiences. They need plausible characters, made so by their reactions to extraordinary situations. Ruth, Bo and the others in “Fast Color” do not know they are in a genre riddled with cliches. So when something miraculous happens to them, they are awed and humbled by it. By finding the right note of empathy, Hart creates a space for viewers to share their doggedly earned hope. ALAN ZILBERMAN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
Hollywood Reporter: “Stranger Things” plagiarism lawsuit headed to trial next month
“Though we can understand the enthusiasm for ‘Game of Thrones’ … we still prefer our intellectual property not be used for political purposes.” HBO, in a statement Thursday,
commenting on President Trump’s use of “Game of Thrones”-inspired imagery. Before a redacted version of the Mueller report was released to the public Thursday, Trump tweeted an image including the terms “game over,” “no collusion” and “no obstruction” written in the font used for the “Game of Thrones” credits.
‘Teen Spirit’ remixes the pop star tune FILM REVIEW Among “A Star Is Born,” “Vox Lux” and the new movie “Her Smell,” there’s been a fair amount of cinematic poking around into the theme of pop-music stardom and its discontents. There’s also one more called “Teen Spirit,” and it’s arguably the best movie of the bunch. The assured directorial debut of actor Max Minghella, “Teen Spirit” tells the story of Violet Valenski (Elle Fanning), a shy English teen living with her Polish mother (Agnieszka Grochowska) on the Isle of Wight. When Violet hears about “Teen Spirit,” a TV singing competition, she decides to try out. And yes, that fairy-tale starting point is exactly as much of a cliche as everything else that so often happens to people like Violet in movies like this. But there’s something irresistible about Fanning, who capably sings all her own vocals (covers of hits by the likes of Robyn, Ellie Goulding and Sigrid) and whose character can’t seem to believe her own good fortune — let alone that she has a great set of pipes. Minghella, who also wrote the screenplay, is a canny storyteller. Don’t expect more of “Teen Spirit” than the movie can deliver: It’s an unapologetically slight film. But at its heart, this movie is a Cinderella story about a pop princess who’s ambivalent about the very meaning and existence of a happily ever after. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

“Please, nobody show Radiohead this.” @PAULXT, joking about page 30 of
“You’re the first team in NFL history to start a season 1-0 before Week One.” @ICKEKRITIKER, praising the Los Angeles Chargers after they previewed their opponents for the 2019 season in a hilarious Twitter thread comparing uniforms to Pop-Tarts flavors, including Wild Berry for the Minnesota Vikings, above. Separately, the Carolina Panthers revealed their opponents in a video game-themed clip.
“A parent at our school had to come get their kid who was caught selling imaginary friends to the younger students for $1 a piece.” REDDITOR ECHISHOLM, sharing
crazy reasons for a child having to be picked up at school. Other answers included the fire department being called to remove a potty training seat from around the neck of a 4-year-old boy.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report. The entire page, except for the Department of Justice header, is blacked out and labeled “Harm to Ongoing Matter.” Twitter users Thursday joked that the label made the page look like a potential album cover. The rock band Radiohead has often used dark backgrounds and small, minimalist print for its album art.
“WASH YOUR FACE PLEASE.” @HELPMEJEFFRY, tweeting at singer Shawn Mendes after he said that he doesn’t wash his face. When pressed by fans about how he maintains his clear skin, Mendes said “skin is very based on how you’re feeling,” claiming, “You could rub dirt on your face & if you’re happy, you won’t break out!” His admission had fans pressing him to take up the simple hygiene practice.

@BRADLEYALBRECHT, reacting to Franklin Hardy’s roller coaster of a story about his dad’s dog. In a short Twitter thread, Hardy related how his father was told by a veterinarian that he would have to put down his dog. As a result, his father began digging the dog’s grave in the yard — while allowing the dog to watch. However, after the vet came to check on the dog, they realized it was a false alarm and that the dog was fine. Twitter users were distressed by the tale and shared their own experiences of vets giving their elderly pets incorrect diagnoses.

waiting for things to settle down a bit before taking advantage of an opportunity that will wait until you’re ready to act.

DIFFICULT
Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

DEPORTATION
Joe: ‘So you’re telling me there’s a chance …’ Joe Giudice’s deportation appeal was denied last week, according to Page Six, though he can still file a petition to review that decision. Giudice, the husband of “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star Teresa Giudice, was ordered in November to be deported to Italy after he served a 41-month prison sentence for fraud. (EXPRESS)
Alex spilled beans on own surprise Alex Rodriguez spent six months planning his proposal to Jennifer Lopez, the former baseball star said on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” Rodriguez rehearsed the proposal three times on a beach in the Bahamas before popping the question, explaining he “wanted the sunset to be perfect.” Rodriguez also said that he wore his World Series ring for the occasion. “I’ve only worn this ring probably a handful of times, but I said, ‘This is a big moment,’ ” he said. “I kind of gave it away because when she saw me put on the ring, she goes, ‘Where are we going with that ring?’ ” (EXPRESS)

Jason Momoa on Wednesday released a video in which he shaved off his signature beard and mustache to promote recycling. Momoa said he thought he had last shaved in 2012. The 39-year-old said he wanted to do it to “bring awareness that plastics are killing our planet.” Momoa also promoted his own line of sparkling water in aluminum cans. “There’s a change coming and it’s aluminum,” he said. This seems like a weirdly specific hypothetical … Gayle King told Oprah Winfrey to “take me to the hospital” if she ever sleeps with Winfrey’s longtime partner, Stedman Graham. Speaking about the topic of romantic drama on “The OG Chronicles,” King said that if she’s ever caught with Graham, Winfrey “shouldn’t even be mad at me, because she should say I’ve lost my mind. Take me to the hospital.” (EXPRESS)
