Michigan family is really going all in on economies of scale

Police in Louisiana say a woman discovered a naked stranger in her tub, eating her Cheetos while taking a bath. A Monroe police affidavit says 29-year-old Evelyn Washington was arrested on burglary and property damage charges. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that a responding officer found “a full tub of water and a plate of food along with half-eaten Cheetos belonging to the victim on the toilet next to the tub. (AP)

A suspect running from police in Florida found himself in need of their help when he ended up nearly submerged in a swamp. The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office posted to Facebook on Wednesday that, after a brief car chase, suspect Paul Daniel Smith fled on foot — right into a swamp, where he was soon neck-deep in mud. It took a number of deputies to free him, and the entire incident was captured by a body camera. (EXPRESS)

There will be no shortage of hand-me-downs for this Michigan kid. The Grand Rapids Press reported that Kateri and Jay Schwandt welcomed their 14th son on Wednesday. They have no daughters. As with their last few children, the couple from Rockford didn’t want to know the baby’s sex ahead of time. Jay Schwandt said earlier this year that he would have loved to have a girl, but didn’t think it would be in the cards. He was right. (AP)

A special delivery from Dan Snyder REDSKINS Lifelong Redskins fan Matt Fraedrich was surprised and excited to receive a FedEx package with a return address from the executive office at Redskins Park before he left for work Monday morning. He was “absolutely floored” when he opened it to find a signed, full-length shot of owner Daniel Snyder smiling in a black suit and the inscription “HTTR!” “There wasn’t even a cover letter or anything,” Fraedrich explained in an email to The Post. “Just one photo of Dan Snyder, signed.” No, Snyder doesn’t mail unsolicited glamour shots of himself to fans. It turns out Fraedrich wrote to Snyder in December. “Dear Mr. Snyder,” the letter began, according to Fraedrich. “Thank you for being a Redskins fan. Thank you for being emotionally invested in the franchise

that has been so dear to me since the day I was born in 1992. Thank you for standing for the best interests of the organization, and weathering the storm when things get rough. Thank you.” Whoa, whoa, whoa. Whoa. That’s a lot of thank-you’s for the man most Redskins fans blame for the team’s, uh, lack of success this century. “I’m pretty sure Dan Snyder gets a bunch of hate

mail, so I tried to sugarcoat it a bit,” Fraedrich explained. He went on to ask Snyder to “lay the groundwork for a Redskins dynasty,” by giving Kirk Cousins a long-term deal. Of course, the Redskins didn’t give Cousins a long-term deal, instead trading for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith and allowing Cousins to depart via free agency. And this is how Snyder responds five months later to what must have been one of the most fawning letters he has ever received from a fan? “As the great Ron Burgundy once said, ‘I’m not even mad. I’m impressed,’ ” Fraedrich said. “Impressed at the complete disregard. I’m convinced it would have been better if he had just never responded.” Fraedrich said he’s already over Cousins’ departure, and isn’t quite sure what he’ll do with his first piece of Snyder memorabilia. “There were some funny suggestions,” Fraedrich said. “Maybe I should frame it and put it above my toilet.”

It looks like the Obamas might be getting ready to host some pool parties this summer. TMZ reported Thursday that the former president and his wife are building a pool at their Kalorama home. Building permits obtained by TMZ reveal that they started the permit application process in January. The Obamas purchased the eight-bedroom home for $8.1 million in May 2017, The Washington Post reported. (EXPRESS)

In Montgomery, it’s still anybody’s race

ST. MARY’S COUNTY, MD.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY In largely blue Montgomery County, June might as well be November. So for the six Democratic candidates for county executive, it’s a countdown to the June 26 primary to determine who will succeed longtime executive Isiah Leggett, D, as the leader of Maryland’s most populous jurisdiction. Voters must choose from three sitting council members, a state delegate, a former mayor and a businessman. And while at-large council member Marc Elrich has racked up the most endorsements and was the top vote-getter among at-large candidates in the past two primaries, experts say it is still anybody’s race. “Very fluid,” said Keith Haller, a political analyst who has conducted polling on the contest but has not formally released the results. “You still have over half of the prime Democrats selfidentifying as undecided, and it’s an insider’s game with political junkies right now.” What will be key to victory, political observers say, is voter turnout, candidate name recognition and several crucial, yet-to-be-announced endorsements — including the “Apple Ballot,” issued by the county

teachers union. That group has said it will wait to see how Elrich and the other council members in the race vote on the budget before deciding whom to back. This year’s crowded field — the number of candidates buoyed not just by term limits but also by the new public campaign financing system — makes standing out that much harder. “You have to get voters to recognize your name to begin with and then what it is that is your identity,” said Steve Silverman, a consultant and former council member who ran against Leggett for county executive in 2006. “What is it that you stand for?” Being a sitting council member adds a bump — voters countywide

may be more familiar with the names Roger Berliner, Marc Elrich and George L. Leventhal than those of the other candidates, former Rockville mayor Rose Krasnow, businessman David Blair, and Del. C. William Frick. But Silverman said Elrich is not necessarily leading — he has just done the best job at defining himself. “There’s no survey, public or private, that has anointed anybody a clear front-runner,” Silverman said. “It would be fairer to characterize the executive’s race as Marc has a definitive lane — the far-left, pro-union, antidevelopment lane. The other five are trying to find their lanes.” JENNIFER BARRIOS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Financial payback is arriving in the mail for thousands of victims of a predatory towing company in Maryland. The payments come from a class-action lawsuit filed against G&G Towing, one of the largest, and arguably most notorious, towing operations in Maryland. The case resulted in a $22 million judgment against the company for improperly towing an estimated 28,000 vehicles from April 2012 to June 2017. In addition to taking legal action against the towing firm and its owner, Glenn W. Cade Jr., the plaintiffs also more than 500 sued property owners who had hired the nowdefunct towing company to police their lots. An April 2 letter sent to a victim with a settlement check says any unclaimed funds will go to charity. (TWP)

The expansion will bring 70 commercial banking branches to the region, resulting in an estimated 700 new hires, the company said. JPMorgan Chase also said it would provide $4 billion in home and small-business loans around the region, boost affordablehousing lending by 50 percent to $500 million and increase an earlier philanthropic donation from $10 million to $25 million. Executives said the D.C.-area locations would give the bank a stronger foothold in the regional market and deepen the its ties to communities. “We view our branches as the heart and soul of our company,” said Thasunda Duckett, chief executive of consumer banking at Chase Bank. “When we bring our branches into market, we’re expanding access to local

McCabe findings sent to federal prosecutor

Prosecutor won’t file charges in Prince’s death

Fired FBI deputy chief faces criminal referral, possibility of charges

JIM WATSON/AFP (GETTY IMAGES)

NATIONAL SECURITY The Justice Department inspector general referred its finding that former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe repeatedly misled investigators to the top federal prosecutor in D.C. to determine whether McCabe should be charged with a crime, according to people familiar with the matter. The referral to the D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office occurred some time ago, after the inspector general concluded McCabe had lied to investigators or his own boss, then-FBI Director James Comey, on four occasions, three of them under oath. The U.S. Attorney’s Office met with McCabe’s legal team in recent weeks, though it was not immediately clear whether prosecutors there were conducting their own investigation or believed criminal charges are appropriate. The referral raises at least the possibility that McCabe could be charged and jailed for his alleged misconduct — perhaps with Comey testifying as a witness against him. A referral to federal prosecutors, though, does not necessarily mean McCabe will be charged with a crime. M i c h a e l R . B r o mw i c h , McCabe’s lawyer, said in a

statement: “We were advised of the referral within the past few weeks. Although we believe the referral is unjustified, the standard for an IG referral is very low. We have already met with staff members from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. We are confident that, unless there is inappropriate pressure from high levels of the Administration, the U.S. Attorney’s Office will conclude that it should decline to prosecute.” IG refers to the inspector general. and a spokeswoman for McCabe declined to comment Thursday. Last week, Inspector General Michael Horowitz sent to Congress a report blasting McCabe. It says he inappropriately authorized the disclosure of sensitive information to the media, then lied repeatedly to investigators examining the matter. The report became public, though it was not released by the inspector general. McCabe, though, disputes many of the report’s findings and has said he never meant to mislead anyone. ‘Shopping while black’ Starbucks incident ‘appears to exemplify what racial discrimination looks like in 2018’ Men arrested at Starbucks push for new policies

to navigate being seen as a threat to avoid harassment, humiliation or harm. At the core of the Black Lives Matter movement is the pattern of what the group sees as a criminalization of black people for doing everyday things. The movement received the most attention for protests following police shootings of unarmed black men, but its main mission focuses on erasing the underlying, systemic racism at the root of encounters like those at Starbucks. As she watched a video of the arrests at the Starbucks, Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors thought immediately about the dignity of the two men during the incident. She said: “And I just watched those men acquiesce to being arrested, knowing that they have to cooperate and they couldn’t do anything else about it.”

Philadelphia Rashon Nelson initially brushed it off when the Starbucks manager told him he couldn’t use the restroom because he wasn’t a paying customer. He thought nothing of it when he and his friend and business partner, Donte Robinson, were asked if they needed help; he explained they were waiting for a business meeting. Robinson, above right, said Thursday on “Good Morning America” that when he saw police, he thought, “They can’t be here for us.” Then the officers started walking in their direction. “That’s when we knew she called the police on us,” Nelson, above left, told The Associated Press in the first interview by the two 23-year-old black men since video of their arrests April 12. In the week since, Nelson and Robinson have met with Starbucks’ CEO and have started pushing for lasting change at the coffee shop chain, including new policies on discrimination. “We do want to make sure it doesn’t happen to anybody again,” Robinson said. On Thursday, they also got an apology from Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross, a black man who at first staunchly defended his officers’ handling of the incident. “I should have said the officers acted within the scope of the law, and not that they didn’t do anything wrong,” Ross said. “Words are very important.”

Philadelphia It was a surreal scene that is part of daily life for many black Americans and minorities, an everyday moment gone wrong, ending in complete humiliation. Two black men were handcuffed and arrested at a Starbucks, setting off a national uproar after the incident was captured on video. A worker complained the men were trespassing, but they maintained they were doing what thousands of people do at the popular coffee chain — waiting to meet a friend. The exchange was a fresh reminder that, five decades after the end of legal segregation, to be black in America is to be constantly challenged in certain spaces in ways white Americans scarcely have to consider, simply to get through the day without being hassled. The term used to describe encounters like the one at the Starbucks is “retail racism,” also known as “shopping while black.” It happens when minority customers are treated differently than white customers through a variety of indignities and slights, such as being refused service, falsely accused of shoplifting or reported to security or police over something mundane. “It is about a perception that black people are undesirable in a given location,” said Princeton University African-American studies professor Imani Perry. “Having to perform being nonthreatening ... it’s exhausting, and it is a commonplace expectation.” Starbucks announced Tuesday that it would close its 8,000 U.S. stores for several hours next month to conduct racial bias training for its nearly 175,000 workers. The company has been responsive in the wake of the April 12 incident, and CEO Kevin

Black Lives Matter activist Asa Khalif, left, protests Sunday inside a Starbucks in Philadelphia.

Johnson came to Philadelphia and met with the two men who were arrested. Within hours, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney condemned the incident, saying it “appears to exemplify what racial discrimination looks like in 2018,” and prosecutors declined to bring charges against the men. Research and surveys show that retail racism remains prevalent, and many black Americans have had their own “Starbucks moment” in establishments across the country. It’s a phenomenon not limited by race, age or gender, affecting even billionaire Oprah Winfrey — turned away at a Paris Hermes shop in 2003 — and former President Barack Obama, who spoke from the White House in the wake of the George Zimmerman acquittal in 2013 about his experiences as a younger man of being followed in stores and doors locking as he passed by.

“Any time I’m encountered by cops, I can honestly say it’s a thought that runs through my mind. You never know what’s going to happen.” Rashon Nelson, one of the black men arrested last week at a Starbucks in Philadelphia, saying he wondered while he sat in a jail cell if he’d make it home alive

In a 2016 Gallup poll, 52 percent of blacks and 17 percent of whites said they perceived discrimination in stores downtown or in shopping malls. A study last year by Case Western professor Cassi Pittman found that such practices require black shoppers

nation+world Former NYC mayor hopes to negotiate an end to Mueller probe Politics Former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani, a combative former prosecutor and longtime ally of President Trump, told The Washington Post on Thursday that he has joined the president’s legal team dealing with the ongoing special counsel probe. “I’m doing it because I hope we can negotiate an end to this for the good of the country and because I have high regard for the president and for Bob Mueller,” Giuliani said in an interview. Trump counsel Jay Sekulow said Thursday in a statement

that Giuliani is joining the team along with two former federal prosecutors, Jane Serene Raskin and Marty Raskin, a couple who run a Florida-based law firm. “Rudy is great,” Trump said in the statement issued by Sekulow. “He has been my friend for a long time and wants to get this matter quickly resolved for the good of the country.” Giuliani, who joins a legal team that has struggled to recruit new members, said he has been speaking with Trump for weeks about joining the group of legal advisers. He said he would work alongside Trump’s current attorneys, Sekulow and Ty Cobb, who are focusing on the federal investigation into Russian interference

in the 2016 presidential election. Giuliani is a former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, which is the office

currently overseeing an investigation of Trump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen. Giuliani declined to say whether Trump has made a final decision on whether to sit for an interview with Mueller and his investigators. He also declined to discuss whether Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has been under fire from conservatives and oversees the Russia probe, could be fired by the president in the coming weeks. “I’m not involved in anything about those issues. My advice on Mueller has been this: He should be allowed to do his job. He’s entitled to do his job.” Rob e r t C o s ta a n d J o s h Da w s e y (THe Washington Post)

In U.S., opioid prescriptions drop sharply Health The number of prescriptions for opioid painkillers filled in the U.S. fell dramatically last year, showing their biggest drop in 25 years and continuing a decline amid increasing legal restrictions and public awareness of the dangers of addiction, new data show. Health data firm IQVIA’s Institute for Human Data Science released a report Thursday showing an 8.9 percent average drop nationwide in the number of prescriptions for opioids filled by retail and mail-order pharmacies. All 50 states and the District of Columbia had declines of more than 5 percent. Declines topped 10 percent in 18 states, including all of New England and other states hit hard by the opioid overdose epidemic, such as West Virginia and Pennsylvania. “We’re at a really critical moment in the country when everybody’s paying attention to this issue,” said Michael Kleinrock, the institute’s research director. There was an even greater drop in the total dosage of opioid prescriptions filled in 2017, down 12 percent from 2016. Reasons for that include more prescriptions being for a shorter duration, a 7.8 percent decline in new patients starting opioid prescriptions and fewer high-dose prescriptions. The U.S. is estimated to consume roughly 30 percent of all opioids used worldwide. Opioid prescriptions and daily doses rose steadily starting in the 1990s and peaked in 2011. LINDA A. JOHNSON (AP)

THREE POINTERS

Desperate to rebound

WIZARDS VS. RAPTORS | GAME 3: 8 P.M. FRIDAY, ESPN2

Scott ‘might’ start at center Friday in D.C.

NBA PLAYOFFS Whenever Game 2 of the firstround NBA playoff series with the Raptors was spiraling out of control Tuesday night, Wizards coach Scott Brooks called upon Mike Scott. During a rough first-quarter sequence, Marcin Gortat fumbled a defensive rebound, missed a layup and surrendered a 3-pointer, all within 22 seconds. Brooks replaced the 6-foot-11 starting center with Scott, a backup forward who stands 6 feet 8. Later on, when the Wizards trailed by 15, Gortat had scored no points and snagged only three rebounds. Once again, Scott took over the big-man duties. Washington closed the third quarter trailing by only 10. Deploying a super-small lineup with Scott at center next to lanky forward Kelly Oubre Jr. and three guards,

the Wizards pulled to within five. Though Washington lost 130119, the team may have uncovered a successful five-man lineup anchored by its emergency center. Scott led all bench players Tuesday with 20 points, making 7-of-10 shots, including 4-of-5 3-pointers. Afterward, when Brooks was asked whether Scott could play center throughout the series, the coach agreed and strongly hinted at a lineup change. “Who knows?” Brooks said. “He might be a starting five [option].” Scott replacing Gortat in the starting lineup would signify a massive shift in Brooks’ philosophy. During his two seasons in Washington, the coach has staunchly trusted his top five — John Wall, Bradley Beal, Otto Porter Jr., Markieff Morris and Gortat — only swapping out starters for injury purposes. But trailing 2-0 against a Raptors team that has stretched his defense thin, the coach’s best counter could be the

Small-ball predecessors Perhaps the best example of a small-ball lineup turning around a series was in the 2015 NBA Finals. After falling behind 2-1 to the Cavaliers, the Warriors pulled 7-foot center Andrew Bogut and gave forward Andre Iguodala his first start of the season. The Warriors won three straight, and Bogut didn’t play in the last two games. Iguodala won Finals MVP. C.B.

unconventional path. “Whatever it takes for the team to win,” Scott said. He’s undersized for a center, but Scott won’t wither in the

post when defending big men. As a scorer, he stays active and provides instant offense. In the first two games, he’s averaged 17 points and shot 80 percent from 3-point range. Scott made it clear he is not campaigning for Gortat’s job, but he would take on any center if that means getting the Wizards back on track. Gortat has started every game this season, but he played only 12 minutes and shot 0-for-4 in Game 2. In a postgame news conference, Wall shared effusive praise for Scott. “We know what he can bring to the table,” Wall said. “We try to use it as much as possible.”

In Game 2, the T-Wolves had 16 turnovers — nearly double Houston’s total — and lost by 20 despite holding James Harden to 12 points. Game 3 is Saturday (7:30, ESPN).

NFL Redskins president Bruce Allen is the least-trusted decisionmaker in the NFL, according to an unscientific USA Today Sports poll of 25 NFL player agents. The agents surveyed, who represent a very small sample of the 800-plus agents certified by the NFL Players Association, answered a variety of questions under the condition of anonymity. “You never know if he’s shooting straight with you,” one agent told USA Today Sports of Allen. The Redskins are 52-75-1 in eight seasons since they hired him. Dolphins executive VP of football operations Mike Tannenbaum, Broncos general manager John Elway and Bengals owner Mike Brown were also among the names included in response to the question, “Which NFL decisionmaker do you trust the least?” Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome

t’s counter-intuitive to clean your apartment with toxins. It is easy to fall into the trap of ‘the more chemicals, the better’ when it comes to cleaning supplies. But, especially when you live in a small space, these chemicals are pungent, abrasive, and many times, toxic. We’re often unaware of the ingredients lurking in our cleaning supplies, and that there are alternative options to these products. Natural and organic cleaning products have been made and used for years, and now there are even more options to choose from online.

IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO MAKE YOUR OWN PRODUCTS AT HOME:

There are many online resources and blogs on this very topic. Vinegar and lemon, and baking soda are going to be your best friends for the DIY route. These ingredients are natural, inexpensive, and do the job well. For a DIY all-purpose cleaner: mix ½ cup vinegar, ¼ cup baking soda into ½ gallon of water. Add lemon or an essential oil for a nonvinegar smell.

Non-Toxic Options + BETTER

LIFE + NATURAL LAUNDRY DETERGENT POD + SEVENTH GENERATION + MRS. MEYERS + COMMON GOOD 0icroȴber cloths are great for cleaning dirt, grease, and dust without the need of chemicals. Instead of using a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on your wall marks, try using baking soda on a damp sponge. Just rub, wipe, and rinse! For your tub and shower, spray pure white vinegar on any moldy or dirty areas, let it sit for about 30 minutes, and then rinse it with warm water and a sponge.

IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO PURCHASE NON-TOXIC PRODUCTS AT THE STORE OR ONLINE:

There are lots of awesome options that won’t break the bank. Q Better Life is an all-purpose cleaning spray that can be used for just about anything. Q Natural laundry detergent pods are free of phosphates, chlorine, and dyes. Q Seventh Generation is the leader in green cleaning products. We love their multi-surface wipes and dishwasher detergent packs. Q Mrs. Meyers is our go-to for both hand and dish soaps. They smell great, don’t leave any residue, and they get the job done. Q We love that Common Good is tackling reusable packaging in this space. We love their linen water, which can be used to reduce wrinkles, or make all of your clothing and linens smell amazing. ‘Borg vs. McEnroe’

‘I Feel Pretty’s’ ugly truth Amy Schumer’s cringe-worthy comedy undermines its more admirable intentions FILM REVIEW “I Feel Pretty” suffers from a fatal flaw: its premise. Built around the notion that there’s something inherently hilarious — even crazy — about a woman not supermodel-thin behaving with the confidence of one who is, the comedy treats its star, Amy Schumer, as if she were Chris Farley in the “SNL” skit “Chippendales Audition.” In that classic sketch from 1990, the actor — nearly 300 pounds of him — does a striptease next to a sweetly nervous, and very buff, Patrick Swayze. It’s funny — or at least it was — because Farley, dancing shirtless to Loverboy’s “Working for the Weekend,” presents himself as hideous.

But that was 28 years ago, and body-shaming is no longer funny. Schumer plays Renee, an ordinary, if slightly insecure, woman who wakes up from a head injury with the confidence of Beyonce. And how dare she, the film suggests. In one scene, her character enters a boardwalkbar bikini contest in her street clothes, a sight meant to induce gales of laughter, but it delivers mostly groans. Renee loses the contest but captures the heart of her romantic interest, Ethan (Rory Scovel), because of her unselfconscious verve. The message? Personality is more important than rockhard abs. Yet that otherwise fine idea is undermined by the entire subtext

of the movie, in a disconnect that encapsulates all that is wrong with it. Though “I Feel Pretty” tries to deliver a message of empowerment — women should feel good about themselves without struggling to meet unreasonable standards of beauty — it ends up making the exact opposite

point. If you don’t look like Emily Ratajkowski, a rail-thin model and actress who has a small role, the film says you’re unworthy of attention and love. Written and directed by Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, “I Feel Pretty” wants to eat its cake and have it, too — inviting us to laugh at women because of how they look, while scolding us for doing so. But all of this would be moot if “I Feel Pretty” managed to be remotely funny. Schumer, so incisive in early seasons of her Comedy Central series “Inside Amy Schumer,” seems to have gotten lazy. Beauty isn’t always effortless, it seems, but comedy is really, really hard. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

BUSINESS MODEL?

The amount MoviePass majority owner Helios and Matheson Analytics lost in 2017, prompting concerns from auditors about the service’s long-term viability. Helios and Matheson CEO Ted Farnsworth told The Wrap that most of the loss was tied to its August acquisition of MoviePass, which has lowered the price of its movie-a-day subscription service to about $10 a month. Helios and Matheson’s stock also dropped about 33 percent Thursday. (EXPRESS) Prince’s official memoir to come out later this year

STX FILMS

In “I Feel Pretty,” Amy Schumer gets hit in the head and gains new confidence.

Sometimes a movie comes along that quietly ambushes the viewer with a skillful, meaningful and entertaining experience. Dramatizing the historic 1980 Wimbledon final that saw Bjorn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) face John McEnroe (Shia LaBeouf), the film conveys every bead of sweat and every ounce of rising tension in that showdown. It’s eminently worthy of the athletic genius it captures and celebrates. ANN HORNADAY (TWP)

Russell Harbaugh’s directorial debut (co-written with Eric Mendelsohn) conveys, with startling clarity, the impermanence of life. A rodeo star (Brady Jandreau) learns that sometimes you can’t get back on that horse in “The Rider.”

The lazy ‘Super Troopers 2’ is a real buzzkill

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Tough break: Manning up isn’t easy in ‘The Rider’ “Being a man” is a nebulous concept at the moment. We’re beginning to recognize that the idea of masculinity is a malleable one — “boys will be boys,” but what that looks like varies from boy to boy. Still, the archetype of American manhood is what you see in “The Rider”: Silent. Strong. Tough. There’s even a cowboy hat to seal the deal. Based on the true story of Brady Jandreau (who plays the movie-fied version of himself, Brady Blackburn; relatives and friends of Jandreau also play versions of themselves), the drama is about a rodeo rider who, after a near-fatal accident, cannot ride again.

Which means he’s basically lost: He makes a living as a talented horse trainer, but can no longer get on a horse. His father and others suggest that he man up and get back in the saddle. “Man up” being the key phrase. Writer-director Chloe Zhao has crafted not only a quietly heartfelt film, but a complex representation of a certain type of masculinity. It’s the kind that tells men to shake it off, to rub some dirt on it, to walk it off. Never show weakness, never show pain. And for God’s sake, don’t cry. I am, for obvious reasons, not privy to many all-male discussions, so I don’t know what they’re like. One scene of “The Rider,” though, feels

very real — probably because the amateur actors based their conversation on ones they’d had a million times before. They discuss all the injuries rodeo has inflicted on them. Broken wrists. Broken legs. Broken heads. One young guy laughs that “by NFL standards, I should be dead.” Then the conversation turns to Lane, a friend of theirs whose rodeorelated brain injury has left him permanently paralyzed and severely brain damaged. When the next rodeo rolls around, though, they’ve all strapped their chaps back on. After his own accident, Brady is faced with a profound dilemma: The thing that gave him a role to fill, a place in the world, a way to live, now might kill him. Is life worth

‘The Rider’ (R, 105 min.) DIRECTOR: Chloe Zhao STARS: Brady Jandreau, Tim Jandreau, Lilly Jandreau, Lane Scott IN A NUTSHELL: A rising star of the rodeo circuit struggles to find a sense of purpose after a riding accident robs him of his ability to compete.

Kanye West tweets he’ll drop seven-track solo album June 1, collaborative album with Kid Cudi June 8

living if it’s not going to look anything like the only life you envisioned? Getting kicked in the head is manly. Obeying doctor’s orders to not get back on a horse again — ever — is not. I hate that masculinity is so closely associated with the stoic bearing of pain. It robs men of the ability to be at least somewhat comfortable in weakness or in asking for help, to not be afraid of crying at movies — other than “Rudy,” one of the few films men are allowed to cry at. (“Field of Dreams,” “Saving Private Ryan” and “Toy Story 3” are also acceptable.) I imagine it is a difficult way to live. “The Rider” is about one man grappling with masculinity, even though he’d never say that’s what he’s doing, probably because saying you’re “grappling with masculinity” is not masculine. Brady has to deal with the fact that he will never again be the man he was “supposed” to be — and whether that means he’ll never again be a man at all. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

FILM REVIEW In the sequel “Super Troopers 2,” a highway patrolman (Kevin Heffernan) intentionally shoots and kills a bald eagle. That’s the level of satire in a lowbrow comedy so irreverent it could almost be considered a subversive indictment of law enforcement, not to mention lowbrow humor. Almost, that is, if it were remotely funny. The crowdfunded movie reunites most of the cast of the 2001 cult hit “Super Troopers,” including director Jay Chandrasekhar, who co-wrote the film with fellow members of the comedy troupe Broken Lizard, who play Vermont state troopers. Brian Cox returns as their grizzled captain, as does Lynda Carter as the governor of Vermont. The result of this reunion is a raunchier version of the original, one that rehashes much of the first film’s silly stoner aesthetic, including locker-room pranks, preoccupation with male genitalia and a drug-smuggling subplot that, predictably, gives the troopers a chance to sample contraband. The funniest bit is a recurring joke involving a female hormone supplement called Flova Scotia. (Seriously.) While many movie sequels depict characters who have actually grown over time — “Before Midnight,” “The Force Awakens” and “T2 Trainspotting” come to mind — this one is stuck in adolescence. ‘Hotel Artemis’

‘Mary Shelley’

EXPECTED RELEASE: June 8

EXPECTED RELEASE: May 25

SUMMARY: It’s 2028 and, amazingly, things in America have gotten worse. Hence the Hotel Artemis, a secret hospital in riot-torn L.A. for criminals that’s run by The Nurse (Jodie Foster). The rules are clear: No insulting the staff, no killing other patients, and have your insurance card ready because we still don’t have universal health care. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Elle Fanning plays the author who wrote the story that would forever make people argue about whether to call the reanimated corpse “Frankenstein or “Frankenstein’s monster. The movie covers not only the writing of the book, but also Shelley’s love life, which, like her sci-fi novel, was pretty impressive for a woman of her time. In the Season 6 episode “The Face Painter,” Puddy attends a Devils playoff game against the New York Rangers, with his face painted green and red to “support the team.” Warburton led the crowd in Puddy’s “We’re the Devils” chant from the episode.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) What appears to be on its way in a hurry may actually slow down suddenly and not arrive today, contrary to your expectations. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Do you have your priorities in order? One side of your personality feels confident that you do, and the other senses something is out of place. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You will begin the day feeling independent and even aloof, but later on you’ll be interested in reconnecting with someone on a deep level. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You must be far more focused than usual today in order to ensure that you don’t neglect something that could adversely affect your future.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You

may act somewhat unhinged for a time today, but there is a method to your madness. By day’s end, that much is clear to everyone.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) The clock is ticking, and yet you’re able to remain relaxed and unfazed by the passing of time. How is this possible — or is it untrue? SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Your expectations are very high today, and someone is likely to tell you just what is possible and what is not. He or she may be wrong, however. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

Today in History

You’re likely to receive an order of sorts that you simply cannot obey — so some negotiation will be required.

1792: France declares war on Austria, marking the start of the French Revolutionary Wars.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) What you do today is likely to have far-reaching effects on those you love; you can ensure that such effects are positive.

1898: The U.S. moves closer to war with Spain as President William McKinley signs a congressional resolution passed the day before recognizing Cuban independence and authorizing military intervention to achieve that goal.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’re likely to begin the day with a lot of questions, but if you pay close attention you’ll be able to answer them all. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You may be called upon to present a defense of your recent endeavors because someone in charge objects to your methodology. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You’re

going to have to face the music today, as someone comes to you and demands that you come clean about something you’ve tried to hide.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
