A postal worker who prosecutors say hoarded more than 17,000 pieces of undelivered mail in New York City allegedly told investigators he was overwhelmed by the amount of mail he had to deliver. Officials say Aleksey Germash, a 16-year postal employee, told them he “made sure to deliver the important mail.” Authorities found 10,000 pieces of mail in Germash’s car, 6,000 in his apartment and 1,000 in his work locker. Lucy is a lover of long walks and a shared dinner of weeds, and she’s looking for love, according to an ad the 2-year-old Embden goose’s owner placed in a Facebook page last week. Brandy Hall of Ocean Springs, Miss., told The Sun Herald of Biloxi that she has taken it upon herself to find a suitable gander for Lucy. Lucy is currently enamored with Hall’s Great Pyrenees, but the dog isn’t very happy with the match. (AP)

An inmate given a brief furlough before a sevenyear prison sentence now faces 111 years. Brandon Wagner of Clovis, N.M., returned to jail 16 hours late after his plea conference. A judge had granted a five-hour furlough for Wagner to see his family before his sentence for identity theft and forgery. Prosecutors say during his furlough Wagner stole $5,000 in rings, tried to smuggle heroin into jail and attacked a health care worker. (AP)

Finally rolling out the glitz THE DISTRICT It’s President Donald Trump’s turn to pull off the ultimate charm offensive. Wined and dined on multiple state visits during his tour of Asia last year, Trump is paying it forward and celebrating nearly 250 years of U.S.-French relations by playing host to President Emmanuel Macron at a glitzy White House state dinner on Tuesday. Months in the making, it’s the first state visit and first big soiree of the Trump era in D.C. “It sounds like what they’re planning will be spectacular,” said Jeremy Bernard, who was White House social secretary in 2014, the last time the U.S. feted a French president. The White House has said little beyond the fact that dinner will be served, sticking to the tradition of trying to maintain an element of surprise for its guests. In fact, Macron will break bread twice with Trump. Today, the president and Melania Trump will dine privately with Macron and his wife,

President Trump will host French President Emmanuel Macron, left, this week at the White House for the first state dinner of his presidency.

The White House said the setting will serve as a reminder of France’s “unique status” as America’s first ally. Trump ended his first year without receiving a foreign leader on a state visit, making him the first president in nearly 100 years to do so and heightening the stakes for Tuesday. In a break with tradition,

Trump invited no Democratic members of Congress or journalists, said a White House official who was not authorized to discuss the arrangements. Most of the responsibility for executing a flawless celebration falls to the first lady and her staff, including such key details as what is served (Trump likes wedge salads and chocolate cake) and poured into glasses (Trump wine?), who sits next to whom, who performs after dinner and what the decor looks like. One big moment is the first glimpse of the first lady in her gown. Fashion details are being kept secret until the first couple steps onto the North Portico on Tuesday night to welcome their dinner guests. An art lover who speaks good English, Macron is known to watch what he eats. Yet he told reporters at an agricultural fair in Paris in February that “I drink wine at lunch and dinner.” Discerning his tastes, including likes and dislikes, even allergies, is one of the first things the White House tries to pin down for all guests, said Bernard. “You’re really focused on making sure the guest feels special,” he said. UNENDING WINTER

Chilly April keeps cold trend alive The first two-thirds of April ended Friday, and few would be surprised that, like three of the four previous months, April has been colder than normal. The trend began in December, with temperatures half a degree below normal. January was below normal too. The average temperature in February was 6.3 degrees above the norm. But March came in 3.2 degrees colder than usual, adding to our sense of unending winter. Forecasts suggest April may be the fourth belownormal month in five. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Defiant D.C. official ‘not backing down’

MARYLAND

Judge denies removal of ex-senator from ballot

Council member White under fire for allegations of anti-Semitic remarks

BONNIE JO MOUNT (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT A defiant D.C. Council member Trayon White Sr., D-Ward 8, on Saturday took to Facebook Live to tell his followers that he was “under attack” by the media and vowed to push back against any effort to reprimand him as criticism mounted over allegations of anti-Semitism and a donation he made to the Nation of Islam. For the past month, White has been trying to survive a national uproar and local political fallout after he spread conspiracy theories that the Rothschilds, a Jewish banking family, controlled the climate and government. His efforts to make amends began unraveling last week after The Washington Post reported that he abruptly left a guided tour of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and that he donated $500 to a Nation of Islam convention where the group’s leader, Louis Farrakhan, bashed Jews. Three fellow council members — Brianne Nadeau, Jack Evans and Mary Cheh — have called for him to be formally reprimanded over the donation. And several Jewish groups that have previously urged forgiveness for White said his financial support for Farrakhan was unacceptable.

RORY ‘DC’ FELTON

D.C. Council member Trayon White Sr., D-Ward 8, took to Facebook Live on Saturday to defend himself against allegations of anti-Semitism.

On Saturday, council member Charles Allen, D-Ward 6, called on the Office of Campaign Finance to “quickly complete its review” of White’s donation. An aide to Allen said the council member wants the review to be completed before deciding whether White should be reprimanded. “We should all speak with one voice that there is no room for or tolerance of hate speech,” Allen said in an email. “I’m disappointed that Councilmember White has not made this more clear in his own words, and I believe his use of these funds is inappropriate and unacceptable.” In a Facebook Live video, W h ite sa id he was done

apologizing and stood by his donation to the Nation of Islam. “I am not resigning, I’m not backing down, I’m not discouraged, I’m not depressed, so run all the media stories you want because my people are going to support me,” White said. Speaking on Facebook Live on Saturday, White compared himself to former mayor and Ward 8 council member Marion Barry — whose close ties to his constituents helped him survive years of repeated political scandal. “They spent $40 million trying to take down Marion Barry,” he said. “This is nothing. I am built for this.” FENIT NIRAPPIL AND DANIELLE DOUGLAS-GABRIEL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

An attorney seeking to remove a former state senator’s name from the primary ballot after his guilty plea in a federal bribery case is asking the disgraced lawmaker to remove his name from Maryland’s voter registration list. In a letter Sunday to Nathaniel Oaks’ public defender, attorney H. Mark Stichel said if Oaks cancels his voter registration, he would immediately become ineligible to hold elective office. Protesters target home of NRA lobbyist and wife

State, federal officials begin storm damage assessment

Officials say 2018 has been the deadliest start to the Maryland boating season in six years. State Natural Resources Police said Friday that four boaters have died since April 4. Police superintendent Col. Ken Ziegler and Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Sara Wallace said none of the four were wearing a life jacket, which would have provided enough time until help could arrive. (AP)

A protester is facing charges for allegedly vandalizing the Alexandria home of the NRA’s top lobbyist. Court records show Patricia Hill of Lincoln, Neb., has been charged with misdemeanor destruction of property outside the home of NRA lobbyist Chris Cox. Protesters have recently been picketing outside Cox’s home and seeking a boycott of his wife’s business. (AP)

Arlington hiking prices to park at meters this year TRANSPORTATION The cost of parking in Arlington will go up this year. The County Board included a 25-cent-per-hour increase in its fiscal 2019 budget adopted Saturday. The board also approved extending the hours for metered parking by two hours until 8 p.m. The cost of short-term parking will rise from $1.50 to $1.75 per hour, and long-term parking will increase from $1.25 to $1.50. Officials say the increase, which will take effect July 1, will generate more than $1.5 million in revenue in the next fiscal year. An additional $2.2 million will be generated from the extra two-hour enforcement of paid parking. Arlington transportation officials said the increases will bring Arlington’s meter rates closer to those of neighboring jurisdictions, where parking costs up to $2.30 per hour. The higher charges are expected to increase parking turnover. “The rate increase and extended hours of operation are intended to encourage more frequent turnover in parking spaces during hours of greatest demand,” an Arlington County report said. Demand for curbside parking extends beyond the current enforcement hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., limiting the spaces available for people seeking shortterm parking, the report said. “This limitation has a negative impact on adjacent commercial businesses that are generally dependent on convenient curbside parking,” the report said. A relative of a victim cries near a voter registration center that was attacked by a suicide bomber in Kabul on Sunday.

ISIS suicide blast kills 57 at Kabul voting center Bomber struck people registering to vote in upcoming elections KABUL An Islamic State suicide bomber carried out an attack at a voter registration center in the Afghan capital of Kabul on Sunday, killing 57 people and wounding more than 100 others, officials from the Afghan interior and public health ministries said. P ubl ic He a lth M i nistr y spokesman Wahid Majro said that among 57 who were killed in the attack, 22 were women and eight were children. Majro added that 119 people were wounded. “The tolls could still rise,” he added.

Gen. Daud Amin, the Kabul police chief, said the suicide bomber targeted civilians who were registering for national identification cards. The large explosion echoed across the city, shattering windows miles away from the attack site and damaging several nearby vehicles. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement carried by its Aamaq news agency, saying it had targeted Shiite “apostates.” The attack comes almost a month after another deadly attack by ISIS in which a suicide bomber carried out an attack near a Shiite shrine in Kabul that targeted attendees celebrating the Persian new year. That attack killed 31 people and wounded 65 others.

In a statement, the president’s office condemned Sunday’s attack and quoted President Ashraf Ghani as saying such “terrorist attacks” won’t prevent people from participating in upcoming parliamentary elections. Afghanistan will hold parliamentary elections in October, and voter registration started a week ago. Last week, three police officers guarding voter registration centers in two Afghan provinces were killed by militants, according to authorities. Afghan security forces have struggled to prevent attacks by the local Islamic State affiliate and the Taliban since the U.S. and NATO concluded their combat mission at the end of 2014.

British researchers said last week that instead of packing donated organs on ice while racing them to transplant patients, keeping livers at body temperature may work better. The livers keep functioning until they’re transplanted thanks to a machine made by Britain’s OrganOx Ltd. that pumps them full of blood and nutrients. The transplant community isn’t ditching affordable ice chests for the far pricier approach just yet. But the study found surgeons preserved the warmed livers several hours longer and ultimately transplanted 20 percent more of those organs than the cooled ones. (AP)

Trump might pardon boxer Jack Johnson President Trump tweeted Saturday afternoon that he would consider a posthumous pardon for boxer Jack Johnson after a call from actor Sylvester Stallone, who, according to Trump, explained the fighter’s “complex and controversial” life. Johnson, the first black heavyweight champion, was convicted in 1913 under the Mann Act, federal legislation that made it illegal to cross state lines with a woman “for the purpose of prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose.” Jim Crow-era prosecutors often used the legislation as a type of anti-miscegenation law. Johnson was widely despised for flaunting his title, his wealth and his affection for white women. He was convicted by an all-white jury. Johnson spent seven years abroad as a fugitive before returning to the U.S. and turning himself in. He served about a year in federal prison. Before his incarceration, Johnson was known to prance around the ring with swagger. He owned a nightclub and wore gold teeth. He once reportedly purchased a pet leopard and took it for walks while sipping champagne. By 1921, Johnson was past his prime, and boxing instituted a stricter color barrier. It would be another 16 years until Joe Louis defeated James Braddock in Chicago to win the world heavyweight title. JACOB BOGAGE

A quiet criterion for HQ2 Amazon’s commitment to LGBT rights might tip the scales in search for new headquarters

N. Korea giving up its nukes? Not so fast.

JASON REDMOND (GETTY IMAGES)

BUSINESS When Amazon executives recently toured the Dallas-Fort Worth area, one of 20 finalists for a second company headquarters, local officials touted its growing workforce and low taxes as perfectly suited to accommodate 50,000 planned Amazon jobs. But the local team also brought an unexpected guest: the Rev. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas, pastor of a predominantly gay megachurch in Dallas. He impressed upon the Amazon representatives how inclusive and welcoming the community has been to him. Although the company’s search materials don’t make it explicit, Amazon has quietly made rights for and acceptance of gay and transgender people part of its criteria in choosing a second headquarters, according to two people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to talk freely. As Amazon executives recently toured finalist locations to help select what they’ve dubbed HQ2, they asked public officials about what sort of “compatible cultural and community environment” each city offers, adding to speculation about whether Amazon will choose a liberal stronghold. In North Carolina, company representatives asked pointed questions of Gov. Roy Cooper, D, about several state policies such as the “bathroom bill,” which restricted the use of public facilities by transgender people, according to a person in the room. In another city, an Amazon executive groaned at the mention of proposed legislation in Georgia that would restrict funding for same-sex adoption, according to

Gay rights have emerged as a focus for Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos.

another person who attended the meeting between the company and state and local officials. Given the publicity and economic impact of the project, including as much as $5 billion in capital expenditures, Amazon’s push on gay and transgender rights may increase pressure on state and local policymakers who have either declined to institute equal-rights rules or passed laws some view as discriminatory. But by raising a social issue during its search, Amazon also risks alienating conservative political leaders, including President Trump, who has recently criticized the company’s taxes and its contract with the U.S. Postal Service. As Delta Air Lines recently learned when it ended a discount for National Rifle Association members (prompting Georgia officials to deny the firm a tax break), a disagreement over social issues can also complicate negotiations for public subsidies, something Amazon is seeking.

Bezos’ $2.5M donation Jennifer Cast, one of Amazon’s first employees, who had left the company and was volunteering for the same-sex marriage campaign, asked Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife for a donation in 2012. She was 50 and living with her partner and their 7-year-old twin boys. “To be very frank, we need help from wealthy straight people who care about us and who want to help us win,” she wrote in an email to Bezos. Cast asked for $100,000. Bezos responded: “This is right for so many reasons. We’re in for $2.5 million. Jeff & MacKenzie.’’ (TWP)

While Amazon’s inquiries on gay rights may anger conservatives, some LGBT advocates say the company is not going far enough. One group wrote to the company’s founder and chief executive, Jeff Bezos, asking that he not choose 11 locations in nine states that have not passed comprehensive legal protections for

Utah’s GOP denies Mitt Romney party nomination to Senate, forcing him into June 26 primary

people based on their sexuality or gender. (Bezos owns Express and The Washington Post). But many of the states being criticized — including Georgia, Indiana, North Carolina and Texas — are among the least expensive options, providing a low tax environment the company covets. “It’s fairly shortsighted to think a business decision like this is likely to be based on one policy, particularly a social one,” said Matt McDonald, a partner at Hamilton Place Strategies who has studied HQ2. Officials in other regions have argued that if Amazon wants to maximize its support for the issue, it could relocate to — and bring change to — a politically red state. Fort Worth-based American Airlines was one of the city’s earliest and most ardent backers of better LGBT rights. Chief executive Doug Parker said, “I think we’re more impactful here than we would be anywhere else.” JONATHAN O’CONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. President Trump on Sunday claimed North Korea has agreed to “denuclearization” before his potential meeting with Kim Jong Un. But that’s not the case. North Korea said Friday it would suspend nuclear tests and intercontinental ballistic missile launches ahead of summits with the U.S. and South Korea. Kim also said a nuclear test site would be closed and “dismantled” now that the country has learned how to make nuclear weapons and mount warheads on rockets. But the North has stopped short of saying it has any intention of abandoning its nuclear arsenal, with Kim making clear that nukes remain a “treasured sword.” Trump nonetheless tweeted Sunday that the North has “agreed to denuclearization (so great for World), site closure, & no more testing!” The North for decades has been pushing a concept of “denuclearization” that bears no resemblance to the American definition, vowing to pursue nuclear development unless Washington removes its troops from the Korean Peninsula and the nuclear umbrella defending South Korea and Japan. Still, South Korea’s president has said Kim isn’t asking for the withdrawal of U.S. troops as a condition for abandoning his nuclear weapons. If true, that would seem to remove a major sticking point to a potential disarmament deal. JILL COLVIN (AP)

Looting amid unrest in Nicaragua

MANAGUA, NICARAGUA | People carry goods after looting a store Sunday during protests against social security reforms. Nicaragua’s president said Sunday that the government is withdrawing the changes, which had triggered widespread unrest that led to 26 deaths.

Son of ex-dictator’s aide leads presidential race

Syrian government forces used warplanes, helicopters and artillery on Sunday to pound districts of the capital held by the Islamic State, in a bid to enforce an evacuation deal reached with the militants earlier in the week. Two Palestinian refugees, a father and a son, were killed during the fighting at the Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus, according to the United Nations’ Palestinian refugee agency. Hundreds of ISIS militants hold parts of the Yarmouk camp and nearby area of Hajar al-Aswad in southern Damascus. They agreed to give up their last pocket there on Friday but have yet to begin surrendering. (AP)

Nikola Pashinian, the leader of major political protests that have gripped the Armenian capital for more than a week, was arrested Sunday. The protests that began on April 13 center on the appointment of former President Serzh Sargsyan as prime minister, part of Armenia’s transition to a system that reduces the powers of the presidency and bolsters the premier’s. Critics say the change allows Sargsyan to lead the country for life. Sargsyan and Pashinian met Sunday, but the prime minister walked out after Pashinian said he would only discuss Sargsyan’s resignation. The protest leader was arrested later in the day. (AP)

The son of a former dictator’s top aide appeared to be the likely winner in Paraguay’s presidential election Sunday, aided by a booming economy under his party. Reuters reported late Sunday that with 50 percent of ballots counted, Mario Abdo Benitez was leading with 47.3 to his opponent Efrain Alegre’s 42.2 percent. Abdo has promised to continue the business-friendly policies of outgoing President Horacio Cartes and has downplayed any fears of a return to the heavyhanded past of Alfredo Stroessner, who ruled from 1954 to 1989. Abdo’s father was Stroessner’s private secretary. (AP/EXPRESS)

Puck luck at last: Breaks help Caps hold 3-2 advantage To those who believe that once the playoffs start the Capitals have no luck except bad luck, there are now a few big exhibits to the contrary. Ahead of Game 6 tonight in Columbus (7:30, NBCSWA, CNBC), it’s far too early to declare a change of trend. A little clutch play and a few nice breaks are not enough to reverse a decades-long sense of ill fortune and black clouds. But twice now — in Game 5 in Washington on Saturday and Game 3 in Columbus on Tuesday — the Caps got plain, old wonderful puck luck of the kind they’ve seldom received. Suddenly, with three straight wins, including a 4-3 overtime triumph in Game 5, they have

turned a brutal series deficit, made up of two confidenceeroding overtime losses at home, into a 3-2 lead. Now it is Nicklas Backstrom, who scored two goals Saturday, including the OT winner on a deflection, who can say, “We got a little lucky today. … It happens in the playoffs. It’s nice.” How often have they got to say that to anybody? They’ve made it past the second round just twice in 27 previous postseason appearances. What makes this current turn of events so piquant is that the list of things that have gone the Caps’ way is getting quite long. In Game 3, the chasm of a 3-0 series deficit was avoided. After Game 5, a comeback series win is just one victory from completion. “In the past, sometimes

Wizards-Raptors Game 4 ended after Express’ deadline Sunday

we would sag, sit back,” Caps coach Barry Trotz said. “Now we don’t sag. Now they get ticked off and go after it.” Then Trotz revealed a tiny smile. “We’ll take a little luck, too,” he said. And about time. The true crisis game of this postseason, if the Caps do advance, will be Game 3, which they escaped in double overtime. For over an hour, any Blue Jackets shot that got past goaltender Braden Holtby might’ve created a three-game deficit that is seldom escaped. In fact, four shots did get past Holtby — and all hit a post with a loud “clang.” One came late in the third period, and another in the first overtime. When the Caps won in double

Winner plays Penguins If the Capitals are able to eliminate Columbus tonight or in a potential Game 7, they’ll have a familiar opponent waiting for them. The Penguins, who have knocked out the Caps in the second round in each of the past two years, finished off the Flyers with an 8-5 road win Sunday in Game 6 that included four goals from Jake Guentzel — three in the third period. (EXPRESS)

OT, the goal was “scored” by Lars Eller, in the sense that he was the only Caps player in the vicinity as the puck seemed to hit everybody in the mayhem in the crease on every part of their equipment. The Caps’ next huge break was escaping an incredibly awful third period Saturday in which they were outshot 16-1 for the final 17:30 of a tie game with Columbus dominating play. The Caps could neither clear the crease in front of Holtby (a year-long flaw) nor clear the puck from their zone. The 3-3 tie at that point wouldn’t have been possible without Backstrom’s first goal, when the center flew in from the right of the goal and tried to pass across the crease. The puck hit defenseman David Savard’s stick and popped several feet into the air — in a perfect fluke of an arc so that it barely cleared the shoulder of goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. “Just got lucky,” Backstrom said with a shrug. Sounds extremely familiar. Except this time it is happening for the Caps, not to them.

With a 131-123 win over the Blazers on Saturday, the sixth-seeded Pelicans swept Portland to become the first NBA team to advance to the second round. Here’s what’s gone right for New Orleans. (EXPRESS)

3 Ball distribution In their first-round series, the Pelicans averaged 26.5 assists per game, third-best in the playoffs entering Sunday. Rajon Rondo accounted for about half of those (13.3 apg).

2 Secondary scoring New Orleans hasn’t been hurt by the lowest-scoring bench in the playoffs as starters Jrue Holiday (41 points in Game 4) and Nikola Mirotic (30 in Game 3) have stepped up.

1 Dominant Davis Entering Sunday, forward Anthony Davis was leading the playoffs in scoring (33.0 ppg) on 57 percent shooting while averaging 12 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game.

Giannis Antetokounmpo tipped in the go-ahead basket with 5 seconds left, finishing with 27 points and seven rebounds as Milwaukee beat visiting Boston 104-102 on Sunday to tie their first-round playoff series at two games apiece. Celtics forward Marcus Morris missed a 14-footer at the buzzer with Khris Middleton’s hand in his face to seal a nail-biting win for the Bucks. At 6 feet 11, Antetokounmpo used his height advantage to score the winning bucket seconds earlier by reaching up around Celtics rookie Jayson Tatum to put back Malcolm Brogdon’s missed layup for the game-winner. Game 5 is Tuesday night in Boston. Jaylen Brown went 5-of-8 from 3-point range and had 34 points for the Celtics. Tatum added 21. Tatum’s 18-foot jumper with 52 seconds left gave the Celtics a brief 100-99 lead. He just couldn’t hold off Antetokounmpo on the other end for the decisive tip-in. The disappointing end for the Celtics overshadowed their spirited rally from a 65-45 deficit with 7:37 left in the third quarter. Play got chippy, and the Celtics limited the Bucks’ transition game. Milwaukee center John Henson missed a second straight game with a sore back. Tyler Zeller (four points) started in his place, and Thon Maker had five blocks off the bench. (AP/EXPRESS)

Manu Ginobili, 40, scored 16 points off the bench in what could be his final home game for San Antonio.

Manu Ginobili scored 10 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter of what could have been his final home game with the Spurs, and San Antonio beat the visiting Warriors 103-90 on Sunday to avoid a series sweep. LaMarcus Aldridge had 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Spurs, but they were willed to the finish by Ginobili, 40, who has said he will decide in the offseason if he’ll return for a 17th season. Kevin Durant had 34 points and 13 rebounds for the Warriors, who can wrap up the series in Game 5 at home Tuesday. With coach Gregg Popovich out for a second straight game following the death of his wife Erin, assistant Ettore Messina

coached the Spurs again. Golden State outscored San Antonio 29-21 in the third quarter and went on a 13-5 run in the fourth quarter to pull within 88-86 with 6 minutes remaining. Aldridge banked in a 3-pointer with 4:22 left, and Ginobili took over with a late pair of 3s. The Spurs extended their lead to as many as 17 points in the first half while holding an edge in almost every statistical category. San Antonio shot 53 percent on 3-pointers after shooting just 26 percent in the first three games. The Warriors were just 7-for-28 on 3-pointers Sunday. Draymond Green pitched in nine points, nine assists and 18 rebounds for Golden State. Klay Thompson scored 12 on 4-of-16 shooting. (AP)

Rafael Nadal won a record 31st Masters title after beating Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-2 in the Monte Carlo final on Sunday. The Spaniard moved one ahead of rival Novak Djokovic for career titles in Masters play, a level of ATP competition below the four grand slams. Nadal, 31, also became the first man in the Open era to win the same title 11 times. His 76th title overall protects his No. 1 ranking from Roger Federer. Nadal can win his 11th title at Barcelona next week, and then an 11th French Open title in June. (AP) TENNIS

Keys, Stephens lead U.S. back into Fed Cup final The United States has a shot to win a second consecutive title in the Fed Cup, the world cup of women’s tennis, after defeating France 3-2 on Sunday. Madison Keys secured the decisive point for the visiting team by beating Pauline Parmentier 7-6 (4), 6-4. Sloane Stephens had given the U.S. a 2-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-0 thrashing of Kristina Mladenovic. The Czech Republic will host the U.S. in the Nov. 10-11 final after defeating host Germany 4-1. Evan Rachel Wood and James Marsden venture into the second season of HBO’s “Westworld.”

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 ‘Unreal’ 9 p.m. today on Lifetime

HBO

Starring Constance Zimmer and Shiri Appleby as the conniving producers behind a “Bachelor”-esque reality show, the drama series concludes its twisty third season with back-to-back episodes.

Galloping at full speed HBO’s philosophical sci-fi drama ‘Westworld’ picks up the pace in its second season TELEVISION HBO’s futuristic cyborg-cowboy drama “Westworld” returned Sunday after a long absence, still dreary as a rain cloud but with noticeably less hitch in its git-along. Perhaps taking some lessons from the first season’s daunting barriers to entry (for all its lavish beauty and philosophical creepiness, “Westworld” was also just about the least fun way to pass time in front of a screen), the show has been reprogrammed a bit so that the first five episodes of Season 2 are filled with the sort of incidents and general momentum that feel more suited to series television. At the same time, “Westworld”

stays true to an ongoing discursiveness that exalts in and cautions against the creation of artificially conscious beings. To briefly recap: In the future, a Western-themed adult playland called Westworld scrambles to recover from a parkwide cerebral meltdown in its “hosts” — extremely lifelike robots who play cowboys, gunslingers, damsels, etc. — all of whom are now responding to a tweak in their programming, turning en masse against one another and the human guests. Chaos reigns across the land, and “Westworld” is more interesting for it. Evan Rachel Wood returns as Dolores, now fiery with self-recognition and full

‘Westworld’ decoded Season 1’s big twist revealed that viewers had been following plots on two different timelines, with William (Jimmi Simpson) turning out to be a younger version of the Man in Black (Ed Harris). William’s back story is easily Season 2’s most intriguing element, promising details of how Westworld was created and funded, and what its true intent may be. H.S.

of speeches (her own #MeToo moment). Wood was great in the role before, but Dolores’ awakening allows her, at last, to take the part where it was meant to go. “Westworld” still leans heavily on thickly sliced monologues to

make its point, and though Dolores is the moral-mechanical center of the show, there’s a better version of this model — and a steelier performance — in the form of Maeve (Thandie Newton), the former brothel madam who engineered her own consciousness awakening. Rather than reflect the panicky, competitive rush that results in other half-thought, half-finished, fairly expensive and certainly mediocre series, “Westworld” demonstrates the proper way to spend a lot of time and money in a meticulous fashion. So watch “Westworld” — mostly to see all that HBO moola do its thing.

2 ‘Homeland’ 9 p.m. Sunday on Showtime

The Season 7 finale is expected to set up the end game for the tense espionage thriller starring Claire Danes, who confirmed last week that next year’s eighth season will be the show’s last.

3 ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Wednesday on Hulu

Elisabeth Moss returns as the rebellious Offred in the first two episodes of the Emmy-winning drama series’ second season, based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel about a patriarchal dystopian future. (EXPRESS)

MUSIC It was a decision that shook the electronic dance world, and one Tim Bergling did not take lightly. As Bergling, the Swedish DJ and producer known as Avicii, announced his retirement from touring just five years after his 2011 song “Levels” launched his meteoric rise, he left the door open for a possible return. “I will however never let go of music,” he wrote in a letter to fans. “One part of me can never say never, I could be back … but I won’t be right back.” Perhaps more than ever, those words resonated with his fans Friday, as they were devastated by the news that Avicii, 28, was found dead in Muscat, Oman. The cause of death has not yet been released, though Omani police confirmed to CNN that no foul play is suspected. Avicii was grateful for the opportunities and comforts of his lucrative career, he wrote in 2016 while explaining his decision to step away from the electronic dance scene. But the lifestyle was exhausting, leaving too little for the “life of a real person behind the artist.” Avicii had canceled tour

dates in 2014 after having his gall bladder and appendix removed, and had been hospitalized twice in the preceding two years for acute pancreatitis, according to Billboard. Avicii’s decision to leave the limelight conveyed the pressures he felt as the face of electronic dance music. A documentary about the DJ released six months ago, “Avicii: True Stories,” reveals how managers and agents can risk a star’s health to maximize publicity and profitability. “That life can look exciting and glamorous on Instagram and social media,” Levan Tsikurishvili, the film’s director and a longtime friend of Avicii’s, told Variety in September. “But you don’t really have any idea what’s going on behind that.” MARWA ELTAGOURI
