A 5-year-old boy in Wyoming, Mich., had a craving for fast food, but his grandmother was sleeping, so he called 911 to ask, “Can you bring me McDonald’s?” Dispatcher Sara Kuberski said no, but reached out to police. Anarchy within the archives ARTS Washington’s National Theatre has been in business since 1835, yet its archives are largely stuffed into a single small dressing room on the fourth floor. The collection, with playbills and photographs that in some cases are more than a century old, looks like family junk piled in an extra bedroom. Close at hand are glamorous photos of presidents and stars — JFK and Jackie exiting after attending the musical “Mr. President”; FDR with George M. Cohan for a 1940 performance of the satire “I’d Rather Be Right.” The disorganization is more grandiose at the Kennedy Center, with everything from contracts and letters to original building plans and backstage photos stashed in halls, offices and closets throughout the arts complex. The largest batch of material languishes in a cold concrete room in the underground parking garage. Behind a locked steel door sit row after long row of shelved cartons. It’s the Kennedy

Center’s version of the final shot in “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Both the National and the Kennedy Center are pondering how to collect and protect the historical assets that tell their institutional stories, and how to connect them to the public. Looking ahead to its 50th anniversary season in 2021-22, the Kennedy Center just hired archivist Sofia Becerra-Licha, associate director of the archives at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, to start work at the end

“I want us to live with this information. I think we would be crazy not to have it here.” DEBORAH RUTTER, Kennedy Center president, talking about what she would like to see come out of upcoming work with the center’s archives. Rutter thinks everything should be kept close at hand.

of the month. A five-year lease has been signed on office space in the Watergate complex next door, where Becerra-Licha and yet-tobe-hired assistants will work. “What do we want to prioritize? Who are our primary users? What is the best way to maximize what we have?” said BecerraLicha, ticking off the questions to be answered as she takes stock of the holdings. The National is asking the same questions, though at a far earlier stage. Its storage room contains a collection of programs dating to 1835. Photos are everywhere. Shelves slump with boxes of interviews on reel and cassette tapes. There’s a microfilm collection, its contents unknown. Sandy Wilkes, president of the National’s board, says the goal is “to have all 62,000 objects digitized, with original material preserved in a museum-quality, climate-controlled space.” Both organizations say they need to raise money to support their archiving efforts, and both are unsure exactly where their materials will end up. At the National, the hope is that at least more public displays can be made of the history. NELSON PRESSLEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

County leader floats compost pickup in lieu of more collection days PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks knew when she took office that a top item on her agenda involved one of government’s least glamorous services: trash collection. Her predecessor, Rushern Baker III, took away the second day of trash collection in the

Alsobrooks and her competitors in last year’s Democratic primary vowed to return the popular extra service, drawing cheers from residents who felt blindsided by Baker’s move. Feds probe claims of bias against Asian Americans

A federal appeals court Monday rejected a bid by former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to be released from jail for refusing to testify to a grand jury investigating WikiLeaks. The three-paragraph, unanimous decision from a threejudge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond rejects both Manning’s argument that she was erroneously found in civil contempt of court and her request for bail while the contempt decision is litigated. Manning has been jailed at the Alexandria Detention Center since March 8. Manning served seven years in a military prison for leaking a trove of documents to WikiLeaks. (AP)

Police said a Maryland man and his car ended up in the Potomac River after attempting to flee a Virginia armed robbery. Arlington Police said they stopped a car Sunday evening that was a suspect vehicle in an armed robbery. Police began a chase but called it off after the suspect started driving the wrong way on the George Washington Parkway. Police said the suspect continued to drive toward the river, and got out of his car as it careened into the water. The suspect tried to swim away before being arrested. Multiple charges were filed against the suspect, who was identified as Freddie Lee McRae, 33, of Temple Hills. (AP)

The U.S. Department of Education is investigating allegations of discrimination against Asian American students in Maryland’s largest school system. Parents in the Montgomery County Public Schools have complained that race was unlawfully factored into admissions for two sought-after middle school magnet programs. They say the number of Asian American students invited into the programs has plummeted after a new selection process was put into place. Ten complaints have been incorporated into one case. School officials deny the allegations of discrimination.

nation+world Report says Medicare, Social Security are on unstable financial paths FINANCES The financial condition of the government’s bedrock retirement programs for middle- and working-class Americans remains shaky, with Medicare pointed toward insolvency by 2026, according to a report Monday by the government’s overseers of Medicare and Social Security. It paints a sobering picture

of the programs, though it’s relatively unchanged from last year’s update. Social Security would become insolvent in 2035, one year later than previously estimated. Both programs will need to eventually be addressed to avert automatic cuts should their trust funds run dry. Neither President Trump nor Capitol Hill’s warring factions have put politically perilous cost curbs on their to-do list. The report is the latest update on the government’s troubled fiscal picture. It lands in a capital that has proven chronically

unable to address it. Trump has declared benefit cuts to the nation’s signature retirement programs off-limits, and many Democratic presidential candidates are calling for expanding Medicare benefits rather than addressing the program’s worsening finances. Many on both sides actually agree that it would be better for Washington to act sooner rather than later to shore up the programs rather than wait until they are on the brink of insolvency. Arkansas Rep. Steve Womack, the senior Republican on

the House Budget Committee, urged action, saying the financial condition of both programs is driving up federal spending, increasing budget deficits and crowding out other priorities. “We cannot afford to ignore this reality any longer,” Womack said. Social Security is the government’s largest program, costing $853 billion last year, with another $147 billion for disability benefits. Medicare’s hospital, outpatient care and prescription drug benefits totaled about $740 billion. ANDREW TAYLOR (AP)

U.S. to sanction nations importing Iranian oil

PLANET-FRIENDLY?

Meal kits may offer a climate advantage

FOREIGN POLICY The Trump administration said Monday that it will no longer exempt any countries from U.S. sanctions if they continue to buy Iranian oil, stepping up pressure on Iran in a move that primarily affects the five remaining major importers: China and India and U.S. treaty allies Japan, South Korea and Turkey. President Trump made the decision as part of the administration’s “maximum pressure” campaign on Iran that aims to eliminate all of its revenue from oil exports that the U.S. says funds destabilizing activity throughout the Middle East. “This decision is intended to bring Iran’s oil exports to zero, denying the regime its principal source of revenue,” the White House said in a statement. Announcing the step, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said no more sanctions waivers would be granted when the current batch expire on May 2, choking off Iranian income that had been more than $50 billion a year. The admi nistration had granted eight waivers when it reimposed sanctions on Iran in November after Trump pulled the U.S. out of the landmark 2015 nuclear deal. The waivers were issued in part to give those

Pompeo: Exemptions for five countries face May 2 expiration date

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says countries that buy Iranian oil will face U.S. sanctions after waivers currently in place expire on May 2.

countries more time to find alternate energy sources but also to prevent a shock to global oil markets. Three of those waivers, for Greece, Italy and Taiwan, are no longer needed because they have halted imports of Iranian oil. But the other five continue to import Iranian oil and had lobbied for their waivers to be extended. Turkey has made perhaps the most public case for an extension, with senior officials telling their U.S. counterparts that Iranian oil is critical to meeting their country’s energy needs. They have also made the case that as a neighbor of Iran, Turkey cannot be expected to close its economy to Iranian goods.

China, one of Iran’s largest customers, slammed the step, calling it more evidence of U.S. “unilateral sanctions and longarm jurisdiction.” China, which relies on imports for about half of its oil, could present the toughest diplomatic challenge for the U.S. in trying to enforce its sanctions. Iran brushed off the decision, calling the sanctions “illegal.” Left unclear by the U.S. decision is whether the five countries will face immediate American sanctions if they continue to take delivery of Iranian oil after the waivers expire. Oil prices rose more than 2% Monday on concerns about global crude supply. MATTHEW LEE (AP)

University of Michigan researchers have concluded that cooking with meal kits is more environmentally friendly than buying the equivalent ingredients at a store, according to a new study in the journal Resources, Conservation and Recycling. A press release said the authors made five two-person meals using either kits from Blue Apron or store-bought ingredients and estimated median emissions for each meal. They found that, on average, the meal kits resulted in carbon emissions about 25 percent lower than the grocery-store meals. The main carbon advantage of meal kits? Much less food waste. (EXPRESS)

Warren unveils plan to tackle student debt POLITICS Presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren on Monday unveiled a sweeping proposal to erase student loan debt for millions of Americans and make public college free for millions more. Warren is the first Democratic candidate to release a detailed policy to tackle the high cost of higher education for people who want to go to college and those who are still paying for it. Her plan would eliminate up to $50,000 in student debt for those with an annual household income of less than $100,000, and would forgive some debt for borrowers with household incomes up to $250,000. Warren estimates more than 95 percent of Americans with student loans would benefit from the plan. The proposal also would cover tuition at all twoand four-year public colleges, while expanding federal Pell Grants and creating a $50 billion fund for historically black colleges and universities. The plan would cost roughly $1.25 trillion over 10 years. Warren plans to pay for the plan with her Ultra-Millionaire Tax, a 2 percent annual tax on those with $50 million or more in wealth. Democrats have rallied around the idea of debt-free college, but there has been little mention of the more than 45 million people with student loans, which makes Warren’s plan a standout, liberal policy analysts say. Grief and fear in Sri Lanka

After years of living in peace, Christian minority worries the attacks could trigger a larger outburst of hate Victims At least 290 people were killed in a series of bombings in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday. The majority were Sri Lankan citizens, but authorities say at least 30 foreigners also died. Here’s a look at some of the victims:

NEGOMBO, SRI LANKA The long, narrow village road leading to St. Sebastian’s Roman Catholic Church became a gantlet of grief Monday. Every few blocks, another concrete-walled house in the modest semi-rural Christian community, about 20 miles from the seaside capital of Colombo, had been turned into a funeral parlor. Every family in Negombo seemed to have lost someone in the Easter Sunday bombings at churches and hotels that left more than 290 dead in several scattered locations. St. Sebastian Church, the community anchor named for a saint of healing, was among the hardest-hit targets, with almost 150 worshippers killed at its Easter morning service. Everyone seemed to be wondering the same thing: After almost a decade of peace and rebuilding since the 2009 settlement of a protracted and vicious civil war between ethnic Tamil guerrillas and the Sri Lankan armed forces, was terrorism again going to become part of their daily lives? They also wondered, after Sri Lanka’s small but stable Christian minority of about 8 percent had lived in relative peace with other religious groups for generations, whether these suicide attacks — tentatively linked by officials to a local Islamist militia — would trigger a larger outburst of communal suspicion and hate. “Even during the civil war, we never had such violent attacks, especially in places of worship,” said the Rev. Indarajid Sunasekaran, a Catholic priest who was going from home to home in Negombo, praying for the dead. “We cannot let this change us. We must all work together to eradicate terrorism. We should learn from the past.” Russell Eardle, 42, a British

Mourners grieve Monday at the burial of three family members who died in the bombing at St. Sebastian Church.

Developments

Relatives cry Monday near a coffin containing the remains of 12-year-old Sneha Savindi, a victim of Sunday’s bombing at St. Sebastian Church.

Sri Lankan man among the mourners, said: “People are terribly scared. They are peaceful, and they don’t know who is to blame. But if another religion has done this, it could be the beginning of another war, which nobody wants.” Several people expressed fears of Islamic extremism

spreading in a country that has so far avoided it, even as armed Islamist extremists wreaked havoc in many other countries. In several conversations, Muslim shopkeepers said they too were horrified by the Easter attacks — and worried that their minority community could be blamed. PAMELA CONSTABLE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Sri Lanka blames local Islamist extremist group: Sri Lanka on Monday accused the National Thowheed Jamaath, a local Islamist extremist group, of being behind a string of Easter bombings. Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said the group used suicide bombers at three churches and three hotels. He added that a foreign network was probably involved. “We do not believe these attacks were carried out by a group of people who were confined to this country,” Senaratne said. FBI to help with probe: The FBI said Monday it’s providing assistance in the investigation into the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka. An FBI spokeswoman confirmed the aid but did not elaborate on what specific help was being offered or provided. The FBI routinely helps foreign governments in investigating terror attacks outside the U.S., including by providing agents on the ground or technical expertise. (AP/TWP)

Sri Lanka’s president asks for international assistance in tracking down terrorist group’s foreign connections

Officials at an elite Washingtonarea private school, Sidwell Friends, confirmed the death of one of its students in an email to parents. The fifth-grade boy, Kieran Shafritz de Zoysa, had been on leave for the last year in Sri Lanka and was killed in the bomb attacks Sunday. “Kieran was passionate about learning, he adored his friends, and he was incredibly excited about returning to Sidwell Friends this coming school year,” the school wrote. “We are beyond sorry not to get the opportunity to welcome Kieran to the Middle School.”

American on business trip Dieter Kowalski, who lived in Denver and worked for international education company Pearson, was among four Americans who were reportedly killed. He died shortly after he arrived at his hotel for a business trip, the company and his family said. His brother, Derrick Kowalski, wrote on Facebook: “We have all lost a brother today.”

Danish billionaire’s 3 kids Three of the four children of Danish billionaire Anders Holch Povlsen, who owns international clothing chain Bestseller, were killed in the attacks, a Bestseller spokesman told the BBC. Povlsen and his family were visiting Sri Lanka for the Easter holiday, the BBC reported. “Unfortunately, we can confirm the reports,” the spokesman said. “We ask you to respect the privacy of the family and we therefore have no further comments.” (TWP/AP)

Hundreds of schoolchildren in Pakistan were taken to hospitals Monday complaining of nausea and vomiting after being given polio vaccinations, officials said. They said angry family members responded by storming a local health facility in Peshawar and setting it ablaze. The incident deals another blow to efforts to eradicate the disease. Islamic extremists have targeted polio workers and stoked conspiracy theories that the vaccinations are part of a Western plot to sterilize Muslims. Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are the only three countries where polio is still endemic. (AP)

It was the most common password among breached accounts in a study released this week by the U.K.’s National Cyber Security Centre, BBC News reported. “Qwerty” and “password” were also in the top five. Ashley, Michael, Daniel and Jessica were the names most commonly used in breached passwords.

COURTS The Supreme Court is taking on a major test of LGBT rights in cases that look at whether federal civil rights law bans job discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. The justices said Monday they will hear cases involving people who claim they were fired because of their sexual orientation and another that involves a funeral home employee who was fired after disclosing that she was transitioning from male to female and dressed as a woman. The cases will be argued in the fall, with decisions likely by June 2020, in the middle of the presidential election campaign. The issue is whether Title VII of the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits sex discrimination, protects LGBT people from job discrimination. Title VII does not specifically mention sexual orientation or transgender status, but federal appeals courts in Chicago and New York have ruled recently that gay and lesbian employees are entitled to protection from discrimination. The federal appeals court in Cincinnati has extended similar protections for transgender people. The big question is whether the Supreme Court, with a strengthened conservative majority, will do the same. The cases are the first on LGBT rights since the retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy, who authored the court’s major gay rights opinions. MARK SHERMAN (AP)

President Trump’s attorneys have asked a federal judge to block a subpoena from Congress.

at the end of this tunnel,” Trump’s attorneys wrote in their brief. “The Oversight Committee is instead assuming the powers of the Department of Justice, investigating (dubious and partisan) allegations of illegal conduct by private individuals.” The subpoena Trump is seeking to stop — sent by Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, D, Md. — relates to unaudited financial summations that Mazars compiled for Trump before he took office. The statements omitted some debts, overvalued some assets and misstated some key facts in ways that made Trump seem wealthier than he was.

POLITICS President Trump sued his own accounting firm and the Democratic chairman of the House Oversight Committee at the same time Monday — trying an unusual tactic to stop the firm from giving the committee details about Trump’s past financial dealings. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in the District of Columbia, seeks a court order to squash a subpoena issued last week by the committee to Mazars USA. Trump’s lawyers also are asking a federal judge to temporarily

block the subpoena until the court has had a chance to review their request. Former House counsels from both sides of the aisle called the challenge a long shot and an apparent delay tactic. Over the years, Congress has had broad leeway to use its subpoena power to probe possible corruption in other branches of government. For instance, during the 1990s, the GOP-led House spent years investigating President Clinton’s involvement in the Whitewater scandal, which began long before he was elected. Trump’s lawsuit seeks to upend decades of legal precedent that have upheld Congress’ right to investigate, arguing that his past personal dealings

HOUSE DIVIDED

NHLPA split on changing playoff setup

RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU

Redskins’ draft wish list The Redskins enter the NFL draft, which begins Thursday (8 p.m., ABC/ESPN), with a fistful of needs. The first-round pick could be a quarterback, edge rusher, receiver or even a tight end. Whatever major hole isn’t filled in the first round will be addressed in Friday’s second and third rounds. Then, on Saturday it will be all about adding depth. Washington has nine picks over the three days, including two selections in Rounds 3, 5 and 7 and none in Round 4 after trading that

GETTY IMAGES

pick to Green Bay for Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. Here are predictions for the Redskins’ first choice in each round.

First round

The Redskins really want a QB, but at No. 15 probably won’t have a viable choice after a likely early run at the position. Maybe that’s for the best because the newcomer wouldn’t have much to target. That’s why Washington should select Ole Miss receiver D.K. Metcalf. The Redskins lack a playmaker, especially a big one. The grandson of former St. Louis running back Terry Metcalf is 6-foot-3 with 4.33 speed. He’s a big downfield threat who comes with the caveat of two neck injuries in college. Essentially, this is a boom-or-bust pick that makes it a daring selection.

Second round

The Redskins can’t exit this draft without a quarterback, and North Carolina State’s Ryan Finley would be a good choice at No. 46. The part that most intrigues Washington is Finley’s game management, which seems to be the new buzzword for passers who can’t throw downfield. Finley is compared to Alex Smith with a little less mobility. Finley protects the ball well with few mistakes and can hit medium-range passes that the Redskins seem to love. He may be mechanical, but plays a smart game and knows how to bait safeties, which is unusual for a college passer. It’s a safe pick.

Third round

There’s still time to find a starting left guard, and Wisconsin’s Michael Deiter played tackle, guard and center in college. If nothing else, he provides needed depth. His best asset is his skill as a lead blocker on runs, especially when pulling to the opposite side. That’s critical for Washington, which will depend on its running game more than usual this season. Deiter isn’t as strong on pass blocking, but third-round picks come with shortcomings. He’ll benefit from the offseason weight program. If it’s not Deiter, Washington still should opt for a run blocker and slide the QB to the right in the pocket more.

Game 6 of Caps-Hurricanes and Nats-Rockies game ended after Express’ deadline

Fifth round

It’s time to start thinking about life after tight ends Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis. The veterans have two years, max, left and Washington needs to find a new target who gets upfield quickly. Stanford’s Kaden Smith isn’t much of a blocker and needs to mature physically, but he has decent hands and is capable of 50 catches per season. Not this season, but the Redskins can develop him for 2021 by improving his strength. Smith is reminiscent of Washington receiver Trey Quinn, with good hands and versatility despite modest overall expectations. He’s another player who needs a big offseason in the weight room.

Late rounds

The draft’s third day is all about depth and special teams. Clemson defensive end Austin Bryant would be a solid sixthround selection for the Redskins while Toledo wide receiver Cody Thompson is a good flyer in the seventh. Bryant is a decent edge rusher, but could fall to late in the draft after playing too tall and off-balance. If he can learn to play lower, Bryant could earn some snaps in Washington. Thompson is a special-teams pick known for his speed and preparation. He could be a gunner on the outside of coverage units and a solid tackler. He could be an emergency quarterback and punter, too.

A number of NHL players are in favor of changing the current playoff format, according to a survey of players’ union representatives conducted by The Associated Press and Canadian Press. The survey found that 48 percent favor changing the current format, which puts each division’s top three teams and a wild card into a bracket without any reseeding. A majority of those who want a different structure believe the league should go back to 1-through-8 seeding in each conference. In all, 15 said the divisional format should be changed. Seven said it should stay the same and the other nine were noncommittal. The players were surveyed before this year’s matchups were set. (AP)

HEALTH ADVICE

How much vitamin D do you need?

GETTY IMAGES/ EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION

Fruit is not the enemy

Despite what some fad diets claim, fruit’s sugar does not make it bad for you NUTRITION There was a time when we didn’t question whether fruit was good for us, when we more or less took “eat your fruits and veggies” to heart. Today, many people are worried that fruit is too high in carbs, sugar and calories. Fad diets such as paleo, keto, carnivore and pegan have convinced a lot of people that fruit is a dietary no-no. Some have bought into the myth — again, promoted by fad diets — that blueberries are the only “safe” fruit because they are “low glycemic,” i.e., they don’t cause your blood sugar to spike. Berries are the only fruit allowed on the pegan diet, the subtext being that other fruit is a ticket to high blood sugar — but this is a fairly liberal stance compared with other fad diets du jour. For example, many on the keto diet and the carnivore diet (aka the “zero carb” diet) call fruit toxic. That sounds a lot like disordered eating. The sugar in fruit is natural sugar, as opposed to added

sugar, which is found in regular soda and many highly processed foods. When you eat an apple or some berries, their sugar comes in a fiber-rich, water-rich, nutrient-rich package. That fiber slows the release of fruit’s sugar into your bloodstream, preventing a spike, especially if you eat fruit as part of a meal or snack with protein and healthy fats. Ditching fruit may mean missing out on some key nutrients. Many fruits are rich not just in vitamins and minerals, but also in phytochemicals, natural plantbased compounds that appear to have a variety of health benefits, including helping to prevent cancer and promote cardiovascular health. Pigment-rich berries and cherries are especially good sources of phytochemicals, but apples, oranges and other fruits contain phytochemicals, too. Research has found an association between eating blueberries and a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease — likely because blueberries are rich in a type of

What about juice? Drinking juice every time you’re thirsty isn’t a good idea, but pure fruit juice in moderation — 8 ounces per day — adds nutritional value without excessive sugar. Orange juice, in particular, does not appear to affect blood sugar, possibly because of its soluble fiber and pectin, as well as a phytochemical called hesperidin. C.D.

phytochemical called anthocyanins. Other fruit was found to be “neutral,” meaning it appeared to neither increase nor decrease the risk of Alzheimer’s. Somehow, the information has been twisted to make people think they should avoid all fruit except berries. This is unfortunate, because even if ongoing clinical research confirms that non-berry fruit doesn’t help prevent Alzheimer’s, it may still help prevent other chronic diseases. A study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics,

Rock Recovery hosts Grub for Good 5K, 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Potomac River Running; $20

for example, found that moderate fruit intake was associated with a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, several cancers and other health conditions. Frankly, fruit doesn’t deserve the bad reputation it’s developing; it is the healthiest sweet around. How much fruit should you eat? That depends on your age, gender and level of physical activity. The U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend 2 cups per day for men and younger women; the recommendation drops to 1½ cups for women older than 30. If you get more than 30 minutes per day of moderate-intensity exercise, you may choose to include more. The bottom line is that fruit — especially when in season — adds pleasure, nutrition and variety to our meals. So go beyond plopping some berries in your cereal: Have an orange with your scrambled eggs, an apple with your almonds, a peach for dessert. You’ll be happier — and healthier. CARRIE DENNETT

The National Academy of Medicine recommends getting 600 IU of vitamin D daily. If you eat 3 ounces of salmon twice a week and have a cup of milk and two eggs every day, you’re still only getting about 330 IU daily. While you can get vitamin D from sun exposure, the American Cancer Society recommends protecting your skin to reduce skin cancer risk, so it’s important to get vitamin D from your diet and supplements. How much is enough? The Endocrine Society says 1,500 to 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 a day may be needed to achieve blood levels of vitamin D linked to bone and muscle health. Obese adults may need two to three times as much. Other research says 2,000 IU a day may reduce the risk of death from cancer. CHRISTY BRISSETTE (FOR TWP)

My wife’s clutter is messing me up

BEN CLAASSEN III (FOR EXPRESS)

Q. My teenage daughter

Q. I am minimalist-ish and like things organized, which my

wife has known since we met. I work from home and need an environment that keeps me mentally clear. When my wife comes home, it’s a tornado. I am trying to help her build habits of putting her stuff away when she comes home. She has started to resent this and has even labeled me “controlling.”

It’s unclear what has changed over time — your standards, her resentment or her clutter habits — but either way, communication and understanding are at issue here. It may seem like overkill to have a few sessions with a marriage

therapist for this, but once resentment and “controlling” accusations enter the equation, it needs to be taken seriously. The path forward involves finding a middle ground that has the least sacrifice for the biggest positive effect in terms

of both partners’ comfort and happiness. It may involve an agreed-upon two-minute ritual once she walks in the door, a nightly joint cleanup or one room of the house being embargoed from clutter — whatever it is, you need help generating solutions together rather than accusations.

constantly worries about her health. She has had several “scares” where she is certain she has a serious illness, and when my husband and I tried to be supportive by getting her checked out, that only made her anxiety worse (and the tests checked out fine). I know she probably needs help but I almost feel that will make her anxiety even worse.

Help helps, eventually. There’s no advantage in waiting. At the very least, she could use some better coping mechanisms and anxiety-reduction techniques.

Or this could be full-fledged illness anxiety disorder that needs more intensive treatment. Or it could be anything in between. Help her understand that she deserves to feel better, and that there are solid tools for managing anxiety that will have noticeable effects on her mental and physical well-being. Your best bet? Jonas Brothers to drop album this summer

HBO

Suranne Jones, left, and Sophie Rundle play forbidden lovers on HBO’s “Gentleman Jack.”

A timely portrait of a woman born too soon

‘Gentleman Jack’ tells the true story of lesbian industrialist Anne Lister TV REVIEW It’s not easy to describe a character as intensely original as Anne Lister, the gender nonconforming (the everything nonconforming) 19th-century protagonist in HBO’s deliciously provocative British period drama “Gentleman Jack,” which premiered Monday night on HBO. But “Gentleman Jack” is far from filler content; indeed, it’s one of the most engaging dramas to come along this year. At first blush, this eight-episode series may look more PBS than HBO, but the second blush is a doozy. Finely executed in conjunction with the BBC and created by Sally Wainwright (whose hits include “Last Tango in Halifax” and “Happy Valley”), the story is drawn from some 4 million words of secretly encoded diary entries written by the real Anne Lister (1791-1840), who managed

to live as openly as a landowning lesbian might in the early days of the Industrial Revolution in West Yorkshire. Lister was a fascinating anomaly in her time and place — an intellectually curious, courageously uninhibited person who believed fully in the innate aspect of her sexual orientation and her right to marry another woman. Suranne Jones is downright sensational as Wainwright’s vision of Anne Lister, blowing into the small village of Halifax in 1832 with cyclone force. Accustomed to a lifetime of turned heads and whispered rumors (and a nickname that supplies the show’s title), Anne has returned from her world travels to her hometown to shake up things at Shibden Hall, the ancestral home of her aging father (Timothy West), aunt (Gemma Jones) and unmarried younger sister (Gemma Whelan). Like all good period dramas, “Gentleman Jack” is packed with quickly paced plots and subplots, scattering its attentions along

Prince memoir “The Beautiful Ones” to be released Oct. 29

the bucolic roads, which Anne traverses in long, determinedly virile strides. The real attraction, however, is the real attraction: No sooner has Anne moved home than she is reacquainted with the shy heiress next door, Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle), who has harbored a sort of girl crush on Anne for years. “Gentleman Jack” is particularly canny in the way it allows Anne’s dangerous delusions (including the notion of a same-sex union) to flourish and then start to unravel by the fifth episode. Although the viewer is inclined to root for her to prevail, Anne often falls somewhat short of heroic, and that’s by design. Driven by class status, she manipulates people to get what she wants, and her obsessive pursuit of the naive Ann Walker verges on predatory. It is heartbreaking to watch as Jones so sharply captures Lister’s triumphs and anguish. She was born 200 years too soon but, in a meaningful way, she’s here with us now.

The Jonas Brothers will release a new album, titled “Happiness Begins,” on June 7, the band announced Monday. The record will mark the Jonas Brothers’ first album since 2009’s “Lines, Vines and Trying Times.” Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas announced in February that they were reuniting after a nearly six-year hiatus and have since released the singles “Sucker” — the trio’s first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 — and “Cool.” The group also will be the subject of an upcoming Amazon documentary. “I have to say out of all the albums we have done together I’m the most proud of this one,” Kevin Jonas wrote on Instagram. “I wish I could hand it to you now but you will just have to wait a little bit longer.” (EXPRESS)

HANK STUEVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

HBO orders Armando Iannucci comedy “Avenue 5” to series

‘Someone Great’ continues Netflix rom-com revival FILM REVIEW The romantic comedy, left for dead by most of the major studios, has been reborn on Netflix, with hits such as “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” and “Set It Up.” Enter the spirited and starry “Someone Great,” the streamer’s latest addition to the genre that came out Friday. Gina Rodriguez plays Jenny, a New York aspiring music writer whose nine-year relationship with her boyfriend Nate (an excellent LaKeith Stanfield) is ending. The impetus is a new job with Rolling Stone that will take Jenny to San Francisco, a move that Nate doesn’t want to make. Taking place in the acutely emotional days after their split, “Someone Great” is about passing through that anguished crucible of heartbreak. A big part of the pleasure is the verve that Rodriguez and her co-stars — particularly DeWanda Wise and Brittany Snow, who play her best friends — bring to the film, which was written and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and produced by Paul Feig. While Snow’s Blair (recklessly breaking free of a staid relationship) and Wise’s Erin (battling her reluctance to commit to her girlfriend) bear plenty of the usual hallmarks of the usual gal-pal supporting players, they’re given a bit more story in “Someone Great.” Ultimately, it’s a movie focused on three women growing into their 30s by leaning on each other.
