UC-Berkeley has elected a squirrel to its student senate. The Sacramento Bee reported “Furry Boi” is one of 20 senators elected April 13. The squirrel initially took the form of a critter living in campus trees, running on issues like acorn access. The man behind Furry Boi, sophomore Stephen Boyle — who at times wore a squirrel costume — said Monday his priorities include environmentalism, disabilities and mental illness. (AP)
A 12-year-old boy from Sydney stole his parents’ credit card and used it to travel to Bali after a family argument, Australia’s Nine News reported Monday. The boy spent some $6,000 ($8,000 Australian) on flights and a hotel. It took four days for authorities to locate him — after he made the mistake of posting a photo and video to social media. The boy told Nine News, “I wanted to go on an adventure.” (EXPRESS)

page three A new urgency: Survivors recount horror of Holocaust They have lived so long they are watching the world forget. These Holocaust survivors — who range in age from 79 to 101 — gathered for an annual brunch Sunday at the Progress Club in Rockville, where they were honored in the twilight of their extraordinary lives for what they had endured and how they had rebuilt in America. But the past was not in the past. Hours before the gathering, a neo-Nazi rally was held in Georgia that ended with the burning of a giant swastika. And over the weekend, President Trump tweeted about “Sleepy eyes Chuck Todd,” the NBC “Meet the Press” host who is Jewish. That is one of Trump’s favorite insults for Todd and one of the descriptions that has been hurled at Jews in the past. It has been on horrifying “How to Spot a
Jew” lists since World War II and all over racist, white nationalist websites. Edith Mayer Cord, 90, who was born in Vienna and spent her youth hiding and then escaping while family members were taken to Auschwitz, said she never imagined Nazi flags would fly in America in her lifetime. Or that rising antiSemitism would be part of the national conversation. “No. I never,” Cord said. “Not in this country. I thought it was finished,” she said. When Joel Appelbaum began the survivors’ brunch at the Charles E. Smith Life Communities in Rockville eight years ago, it was in the spirit of honoring the people and their remarkable lives. There were 50 of them, and very few wanted to talk publicly about their experiences, but they gathered and told small snippets of their stories to tablemates. There is a new urgency in remembering those stories.
Holocaust survivor Josiane Traum, 79, shares her story Sunday at the Progress Club in Rockville.

Two-thirds of American millennials do not know what Auschwitz is, and 22 percent had not heard of the Holocaust or were not sure if they had, according to a new survey conducted by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany. In their sunset years, the incredible Maryland survivors are opening up. A handful of them went to the microphone on Sunday and told small stories they had not told before.
Because something has changed in this country. The horrors are so profound. Yet the horrors are not gone. Never has that been clearer with this group than now. “Nazism isn’t something that just happened one day because of one bad guy,” Cord said. “All of these ideas were there — all he had to do was pick them up.”
“She doesn’t just choose colors or make things pretty. She really is wanting to make sure that people feel at home.” STEPHANIE GRISHAM, Melania

In D.C., all hail ride-hailing
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.
Ex-KKK chief asks to bar subpoena over Va. rally
TRANSPORTATION D.C.’s ride-hailing market has exploded over the past three years, more than quadrupling since late 2015 as Metro and taxi ridership have steadily fallen, statistics show, a sign that Uber and Lyft are likely creating thousands of new vehicle trips in the city, officials and analysts say. New figures provided by the office of D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser show taxi ridership has fallen 31 percent, or about 6 million trips, since the ride-hailing boom began in late 2015. Metro hired a consultant last year to build ridership models that take into account the impact of ride-hailing services as part of the agency’s effort to determine the sources of its ridership decline; average weekday ridership is down about 135,000 riders from peaks a decade ago. Revenue the city collects from a ride surcharge shows how quickly the ride-share services have taken off. The app-based services are generating as much tax revenue for the city — about $4.5 million a year — as taxis did in 2015 with a 25-cent-per-ride surcharge. The 1 percent ride-hailing fee generated about $875,570 in 2015. “We are talking about a tale of two cities,” said Ernest Chrappah, director of the D.C. Department of For-hire Vehicles, which regulates taxis and ride-hail services. “The bulk of the [taxi] trips

[are] no longer there. … Most of the time you push your Uber app or your Lyft app or your Via app.” The figures at least partly explain why Bowser is turning to the ride-hailing industry to raise money to pay for Metro. Bowser has proposed increasing the tax on gross receipts on “for-hire” vehicle services, passed onto customers as city fees on trips, from 1 percent to 4.75 percent. For the customer, that would mean a dime charge on a $10 trip would become a 47-cent charge. The money raised from the tax would cover about 10 percent of the $178.5 million in annual funding the city has pledged for its share of the $500 million a year in dedicated funding for Metro. City budget documents show
D.C. is expected to raise about $17.3 million from the ride-hailing tax in the next fiscal year, with the amount gradually rising to $19 million by 2022. The actual average cost of an Uber or Lyft in D.C. is unknown; the companies declined to provide the data. But the figure is a critical piece of information in trying to determine how many rides the services are delivering daily. At $10 a trip, for example, the $4.5 million in surcharge revenue would reflect that ride-hailing companies are delivering about 45 million annual trips in the city. Uber has shared limited data with the District Department of Transportation through Uber Movement, an informationsharing platform that showcases
insights such as vehicle travel time and demand. At a joint event with Bowser earlier this month, the company also announced a unique data-sharing program called SharedStreets. Under the pilot, which is beginning in D.C., Uber will share its data on curb use to help cities deal with congestion and sustainability goals. But Chrappah said there is significantly more data to be gleaned from Uber and Lyft. Asked how many trips the ride-hail companies his department regulates are responsible for on D.C. streets, he said: “Nobody knows the truth, except the person who has the information,” he said. “The disclosure [of average fares] for public interest is necessary.” FAIZ SIDDIQUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)
POSSIBLE CASINO SITE IN VA.
The number of acres of land in New Kent County, Va., bought by a group working with the Pamunkey Indian Tribe that could be used for a resort and casino. The Daily Press reported Sunday that an Illinois-based company purchased the land for about $3 million. The tribe said recently that it’s looking at sites in Virginia to build a $700 million resort and casino. The Department of the Interior granted federal recognition to the Pamunkey in 2015, allowing the possibility of casinos through a separate approval process. Virginia currently has no casinos. (AP)

Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke asked a judge to block a subpoena in a federal lawsuit filed by 11 people injured during a violent clash between white nationalists and counterprotesters in Charlottesville last year. The plaintiffs are seeking to compel him to turn over records related to communications he and other white nationalists had before the rally, along with records of efforts to solicit donations. Police: Van fatally strikes boy, 12; driver arrested The driver of a van that ran off a road and fatally injured a 12-yearold boy has been arrested. Michael Blair Gauthier, 37, of Arnold, Md., was charged with criminally negligent manslaughter and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. Police said Matthew Murphy was walking with his mother and brother just outside of Annapolis on Sunday when he was struck. WTOP reported that police said reckless driving and failing to remain in a single lane may be the cause. The results of a toxicology screening are pending. (AP) LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA.

The incident occurred on the W&OD trail in the Ashburn area of Loudoun County, the county sheriff’s office said. The victim, described only as a man, was listed in stable condition. Police said the suspect in what they described as an assault wore a white/light green jersey and was about 6 feet tall. (TWP)

Support strong for Gov. Hogan in latest poll MARYLAND Gov. Larry Hogan remains highly popular in Maryland, according to a new poll, despite being a Republican in a blue state in an election year when Democrats hope to capitalize on opposition to President Trump. Sixty-nine percent of Marylanders approve of the way Hogan is handling his job, an increase from 61 percent in February, according to a Goucher College poll being released today. It’s his highest approval rating in the Goucher poll since fall 2016. He receives praise across party lines: 65 percent of registered Democrats, 64percent of independents and 81 percent of Republicans approve of him. Hogan is vying to become the second GOP governor in 60 years to be re-elected in Maryland, where registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans 2 to 1. He’s tried hard to avoid a partisan label, and has repeatedly distanced himself from Trump, a fellow Republican, and Republicans in Congress. So far, the strategy seems to have worked. Seventy percent of Marylanders disapprove of Trump, nearly the opposite of Hogan’s approval rating, according to the Goucher poll. “If I were Larry Hogan, I’d probably be doing somersaults, said Todd Eberly, a political scientist at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. “If there’s going to be a blue wave, I think Hogan is in the best position he could be in a Democratic state if you were going to withstand that wave. STEVE THOMPSON AND SCOTT CLEMENT (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Van kills 9 on Toronto street
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA
Koreas halt propaganda broadcasts prior to talks
TORONTO A rented van jumped onto a crowded Toronto sidewalk Monday, killing nine people and injuring 16 before the driver fled and was quickly arrested in a confrontation with police, Canadian authorities said. Witnesses said the driver was moving fast and appeared to be acting deliberately, but police said they did not yet know the cause or any possible motive. As of Express’ deadline, the name of the suspect had not been released. Toronto Police Services Deputy Chief Peter Yuen released no details about the investigation as he announced the number of casualties. Yuen said police were still interviewing witnesses and examining surveillance video of the incident as part of what he called a “complex” investigation. The incident occurred as Cabinet ministers from the major industrial countries were gathered in Canada in the run-up to the G7 meeting near Quebec City in June. The driver was heading south on busy Yonge Street around 1:30 p.m. and the streets were crowded with people enjoying an unseasonably warm day when the van jumped onto the sidewalk. Ali Shaker, who was driving near the van at the time, told Canadian broadcast outlet CP24

that the driver appeared to be moving deliberately through the crowd at more than 30 mph. “He just went on the sidewalk,” a distraught Shaker said. “He just started hitting everybody, man. He hit every single person on the sidewalk. Anybody in his way he would hit.” Witness Peter Kang told CTV News that the driver did not seem to make any effort to stop. “If it was an accident he would have stopped,” Kang said. “But the person just went through the sidewalk. He could have stopped.” Video shown on several Canadian outlets showed police arresting the driver, dressed in dark clothes, after officers surrounded him and his rental
Was it terrorism? Minister of Public Safety Ralph Goodale said that it was too soon to say whether the crash was a case of international terrorism and that the government had not raised its terrorism alert. A senior national government official later said that authorities had not turned over the investigation to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, a sign that investigators believed it was unlikely that terrorism was the motive. Police catch shooting suspect NASHVILLE, TENN. The gunman suspected of killing four people in a shooting at a Waffle House restaurant was arrested near his apartment Monday after hiding from police for more than a day, authorities said. Police and federal agents had mounted a massive manhunt for 29-year-old Travis Reinking after the Sunday morning attacks in Nashville, Tenn., in which a gunman clad only in a jacket used an assault rifle to attack a diverse crowd of customers before being disarmed by a patron. Construction workers told officers Monday that a person matching Reinking’s description walked into the woods near a construction site, Lt. Carlos Lara told reporters. A detective spotted Reinking, who lay down on the ground to be handcuffed when confronted, Lara said. Reinking carried a black backpack with a silver semi-automatic weapon and .45-caliber ammunition, Lara said. Detectives cut the backpack off him. Police spokesman Don Aaron said Reinking requested a lawyer and was taken to a hospital before he would be booked on four counts of criminal homicide. It’s not clear why Reinking attacked shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday, though he may have “mental issues,” Metropolitan Nashville Police Chief Steve

Waffle House slaying suspect Travis Reinking sits in a police car after being arrested in Nashville, Tenn., on Monday.
Anderson said earlier. Police said Reinking opened fire in the restaurant parking lot before storming the restaurant, which had about 20 people inside. Four people — three of them black and one Hispanic — were killed and four others injured before a customer wrestled the weapon away and Reinking, who is white, ran out, police said. Police said Reinking stole a BMW days before the attack. The car was quickly recovered, but authorities did not immediately link the theft to Reinking. Meanwhile, authorities in Illinois shared past reports suggesting multiple red flags. In May 2016, Reinking told deputies from Tazewell County, Ill., that music superstar Taylor Swift was stalking him and
hacking his phone, and that his family was also involved. Reinking agreed to go to a local hospital for an evaluation after repeatedly resisting the request, the sheriff’s report said. Another sheriff’s report said Reinking barged into a community pool in Tremont, Ill., last June, and jumped into the water wearing a pink woman’s coat over his underwear. Investigators believed he had an AR-15 rifle in his car trunk. No charges were filed. Last July, Reinking was arrested by the U.S. Secret Service after he entered a restricted area near the White House and refused to leave. Reinking was not armed, but at the FBI’s request, Illinois police revoked his state firearms card and seized four guns from him. The AR-15

In August, Reinking told police he wanted to file a report about 20 to 30 people tapping into his computer and phone and people “barking like dogs” outside his residence, according to a report. Tazewell County Sheriff Robert Huston said deputies returned the guns to Reinking’s father on the promise he would “keep the weapons secure and out of the possession of Travis.” Reinking’s father “has now acknowledged giving them back” to his son, Aaron said. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives special Agent Marcus Watson said Monday that that action is “potentially a violation of federal law.” SHEILA BURKE (AP)
State visit starts with dinner at Mount Vernon POLITICS Tending to bonding before business, President Trump and France’s Emmanuel Macron began the French president’s visit Monday with an anythingbut-ordinary double date with their wives at George Washington’s house. The presidents and their spouses helicoptered together to Mount Vernon, Washington’s historic riverside home, for a private dinner before the two leaders sit down today for talks on a weighty agenda including security, trade and the Iran nuclear deal. Macron’s pomp-filled threeday state visit to Washington underscores the importance that both sides attach to the relationship: Macron, who calls Trump often, has emerged as something of a “Trump whisperer” at a time when the American president’s relationships with other European leaders are more strained. Trump, who attaches great importance to the optics of pageantry and ceremony, chose to honor Macron with the first state visit of his administration. In addition, the Trumps and Macrons planted a tree on the White House grounds together on Monday. The young oak, a gift to the White House from Macron, bears historical significance. It sprouted at a World War I site in France, the Battle of Belleau Wood, that became part of U.S. Marine Corps lore. DARLENE SUPERVILLE (AP)

nation+world Committee approves secretary of state pick to avoid rare rebuke POLITICS President Trump’s choice for secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, cleared the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Monday with a favorable recommendation, narrowly avoiding a rare rebuke as his confirmation heads to the full Senate. Democrats put up stiff resistance and voted against Pompeo, who is now the CIA director. Only a last-minute switch from Sen. Rand Paul — whom Trump called before the vote — enabled Pompeo to win committee approval. It would have been the first
time since the committee starting keeping records in 1925 that a secretary of state nominee faced an unfavorable report. The Kentucky Republican announced his position moments before the committee was set to consider the nominee. Pompeo didn’t have sufficient support from the panel for a favorable recommendation, and Paul’s support changed that outcome. Paul said on Twitter on Monday that after talking with Trump and meeting with the nominee, he received assurances that Pompeo believes the Iraq war “was a mistake, that regime change has destabilized the region, and that we must end our involvement with Afghanistan.” With those assurances, the

senator says he has “decided to support his nomination to be our next secretary of state.” Paul’s change of heart came
after two Democrats facing challenging re-election contests this year announced that they would vote for Pompeo on the floor, seemingly clinching his nomination, even if the committee did not endorse him. The vote was 11 in favor, 9 opposed and 1 voting present. Only 10 of the 11 senators who backed Pompeo were present in the committee room. Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., agreed to vote present, making it possible to send Pompeo’s nomination to the floor. Pompeo’s nomination now goes to the full Senate. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he looks forward to voting to confirm Pompeo this week.

SARALAND, ALA. Two white police officers in Alabama wrestled a black woman to the ground in a Waffle House early Sunday morning, exposing her breasts during the struggle. A video that has gone viral shows Chikesia Clemons, 25, sitting on a chair at the diner in Saraland as one of the officers grabs her neck and right wrist in an attempt to subdue her. What happens next is unclear. The widely circulated video of the incident jumps to the moment Clemons and the two officers go to the ground in a violent tumble. It is not clear who initiated the struggle. One officer says that he is going to break Clemons’ arm. Clemons was arrested at about 2:45 a.m. and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, her mother, Chiquitta Clemons-Howard, told al.com. She said the dispute arose after her daughter refused to pay an extra 50 cents for plastic utensils. Waffle House officials, speaking anonymously to offer a candid assessment of the incident, said key details were left out of statements by Clemons and Clemons-Howard, and cited surveillance footage with no audio that shows Clemons or another woman gesturing at a staff member “while appearing agitated.” Waffle House said in a statement that police intervention was appropriate. nation+world Demonstrators feared leader was attempting to stay in power for life YEREVAN, ARMENIA Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan resigned unexpectedly Monday to quell massive antigovernment protests over what critics feared was his effort to seize power for life. Residents of the capital, Yerevan, poured out on the streets to celebrate his stunning departure. “[Protest leader] Nikol Pashinian was right. I was wrong,”
Sargsyan, a former Armenian president, said in a surprise announcement on his website. “The Sargsyan movement on the streets is against my rule. I’m complying with their demands.” The government quickly named former Prime Minister Karen Karapetian as acting prime minister. A Sargsyan ally, he also was mayor of Yerevan and worked in Russia for five years as a top executive at Gazprom. The move was part of a

Critics saw that as an attempt by 63-year-old Sargsyan, who served as president from 2008 until term limits forced him out in March, to stay in power indefinitely. It echoed similar tenurelengthening maneuvers by Russian President Vladimir Putin — Armenia’s closest ally. John Wall has averaged 26.8 points and 13 assists over four playoff games against the Raptors.
THREE POINTERS
JONATHAN NEWTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Momentum changers
JERRY BREWER | THE WASHINGTON POST
‘Point god’ status: Wall proves he’s the star D.C. needs Before he reclaimed his throne, John Wall announced his intentions. He warned all who needed to be warned: the Raptors, the crowd at Capital One Arena, the detractors who felt safe during his flaw-exposing, injury-plagued regular season. The “point god” was back. Not just the All-Star point guard. D.C.’s “point god,” as he is declared before every home game. He started with a wicked crossover to ditch Kyle Lowry and a ferocious lefthanded dunk over Jonas Valanciunas in the first quarter. “This is my city!” Wall barked in celebration. “I don’t play that s---!” For most of this season, as
he suffered through knee problems, missed a career-high 41 games and seemed to impede the team’s progress when he did play, it became popular to wish Wall would tone down his game and his big-dog act. Bradley Beal had graduated to All-Star. The entire team had improved. The Wizards didn’t need a savior anymore. They needed Wall to be a better leader and distributor. He scoffed at the notion that his style was suddenly a problem. Then the Wizards ended the season dragging, exhausted from playing without Wall and in need of his exuberance. Through four games of this first-round series with Toronto, Wall has reiterated his importance to the franchise by averaging 26.8 points, 13.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 2.8 steals.
Capitals-Blue Jackets Game 6 ended after Express’ deadline Monday
Wall is still rusty. He didn’t return to action until March 31, and he played only four warmup games before the postseason began. But he is playing at an elite level, and with every game, he is becoming more of a force. In Game 4, he provided the quintessential “Wall is back” performance with 27 points and 14 assists. He posterized Valanciunas and backup center Jakob Poeltl. He barked, he scowled and, despite playing all 24 minutes of the second half, he had more energy than anyone on the court in the final five minutes. The Wizards needed every ounce of stardom from Wall after Beal fouled out with 4:58 remaining. The score was tied at 92 then, but Wall had eight

points and an assist during a game-closing 14-6 run. Wall’s smooth baseline jumper with 58.1 seconds left proved to be the dagger in a 106-98 victory. “Just go in attack mode,” Wall said of his mentality after Beal fouled out. “Even when Brad’s in the game, he’s telling me, ‘Be aggressive.’ At the same time, I’m trying to find him.” In the third quarter of Game 4, Wall was more willing to foster better-ball movement, and the results were eye-opening. The Wizards scored 40 points in that quarter after being held to 40 in the entire first half. Despite his defiant exterior, Wall has thought deeply about what he can do differently to elevate the Wizards. He’ll always want to be the biggest star on the team. But he’s starting to buy into the obvious: Beal is er, clearly the team’s best scorer, e and it’s Wall’s job to enhance s. his teammate’s effectiveness. o As the Wizards prepare to return to Toronto for Game 5 eem on Wednesday, they truly seem as complete as they’ve been all season. At the center of it alll is Wall, the “point god” again.
Over two lousy losses in Toronto, the Wizards appeared at their most dysfunctional. But two wins at home revived their hopes of upsetting a No. 1 seed. Here’s a look at what changed. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Team USA set to visit White House Martha Karolyi: Nassar’s crimes aren’t my fault GYMNASTICS Former USA Gymnastics national team coordinator Martha Karolyi said Sunday that she doesn’t feel she should be held responsible for the actions of a team doctor who sexually abused athletes. Karolyi told “Dateline NBC” she “feels extremely bad” for the victims of Larry Nassar but downplayed the idea that the atmosphere she created at the national team training center that bears her name enabled Nassar. Multiple victims have said the doctor abused them at the Karolyi Ranch in Texas. Karolyi led the national team for 15 years before retiring after the 2016 Rio Olympics. She told “Dateline” that Nassar conned her and her husband Bela in the same way he conned parents and coaches of gymnasts. Nassar spent nearly 30 years at USA Gymnastics before being fired in 2015. He worked at Michigan State through the fall of 2016 before being hit with federal charges. Nassar is now serving up to 175 years in prison on abuse and child porn charges. Gymnasts and coaches have told AP the Karolyis created a win-at-all-costs culture that forced girls to train while injured. According to witness statements in Nassar’s cases, he flourished in part because athletes were afraid to challenge authority. Jamie Dantzscher, a former Olympian, said that at the minimum, the Karolyis were wrong to let Nassar go into girls’ bedrooms alone. (AP)

NBA PLAYOFFS Philadelphia’s six leading average scorers so far in the playoffs, in order are: Ben Simmons, Dario Saric, Joel Embiid, JJ Redick, Marco Belinelli and Ersan Ilyasova. Their homelands: Australia, Croatia, Cameroon, the United States, Italy and Turkey. Philadelphia — a melting pot of humanity for more than 300 years — has a basketball team nearly as diverse as the city itself. The 76ers, 19-1 in their last 20 games and suddenly looking like an NBA Finals contender, will try to close out the Heat and clinch their first-round series when they host Game 5 tonight (8, TNT). A record 62 players from 33
countries were on NBA playoff rosters this season, and no one had more than the 76ers, whose seven international guys — including reserves Furkan Korkmaz and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot — match Utah for the league lead. About a dozen languages and dialects can be spoken in the 76ers’ locker room at any time. “That equals a team,” 76ers coach Brett Brown said. “… I love it. I love the geo-political conversations. I love that diversity on the court, off the court. I enjoy it.” There might be no coach bettersuited for this gig. Brown spent nearly two decades living overseas, mostly coaching in Australia, before working as an assistant for the Spurs — a franchise that found championship ingredients from all over the world — back in 2002. Brown went to Philadelphia in 2013 and took loss after loss for his first four seasons. Now he’s
reaping the rewards of “The Process” with a young, brash group that likes to shoot. “Growing up overseas, we have that European style of play,” Simmons said. In the NBA sense, Simmons, 21, is still a kid. But he’s already played all over Australia; in Lithuania at the FIBA World U17 Championships as a 15-year-old; in high school in Florida; and in his lone year of college at LSU. Like Simmons, Embiid is in his first playoffs. With a mask protecting his surgically repaired face, he’s handled playing injured with ease. Belinelli has been a steadying force since he got to Philly two months ago. Saric has played well enough to draw comparisons to countrymen Drazen Petrovic and Peja Stojakovic. And Ilyasova has been a key player since being rescued from Atlanta in February. TIM REYNOLDS (AP)

Sweeteners linked to diabetes
Don’t aim for one spot Experts: Focusing on specific muscles to reduce fat doesn’t work — and can hurt you EXERCISE We’re here again: A couple of months from swimsuit season. And you might be looking in the mirror — at a beer belly, thigh rub, bra bulge, love handles, saddlebags — and asking: Can I get rid of that through exercise and diet? In other words, spot reduction. “No, it doesn’t work that way,” says Todd Miller, professor of nutrition and exercise sciences at George Washington University. “Fat in your body is like gas in your gas tank. Thinking you can reduce fat from your stomach alone is like saying you want to use gas only from the right side of your gas tank.” Fat, just like gas in your car, is stored energy. It gets recruited equally from all over your body and sent to the muscles to be burned, Miller says. But why then do we carry more of it in certain areas? “Genetics is the most important determinant for where fat is stored,” says Scott Kahan,
director of the National Center for Weight and Wellness. “Often we have relatively similar shapes as our parents.” Gender and age are also part of the equation, Kahan says. Men tend to carry more fat in the midsection, and women tend to have more around thighs and hips. A toned look — let’s say sixpack abs — requires not only low body fat but also a genetic predisposition to have a fairly equal distribution of fat all over the body. (Low body fat means roughly 15 percent for a woman and less than that for a man. In comparison, the American Council on Exercise lists 25 to 31 percent body fat as average for women; for men, 18 to 24 percent is average.) The best way to achieve 15 percent body fat? “Total body movements, high-intensity drills, adequate rest and a boring diet,” says Gabe Free, a personal trainer in the Washington area. When he was trying to trim fat, that
Muscle imbalances Being overly focused on one muscle group can do more harm than good, says Scott Kahan, director of the National Center for Weight and Wellness: It can create muscle imbalances. If the front of the body, including the abs, is too strong and the back is too weak, that can lead to a hunched-over “cave man look,” which can cause back pain. G.B.
meant a diet consisting of lean proteins and vegetables with a few cheat meals here and there. His breakfast every day was kale and eggs. He kept up his usual workout routine, including dead lifts and squats. “I didn’t lose weight, but I leaned out,” he says. In other words, his body fat percentage — fat-to-muscle ratio — went down. The reason total body movements (planks, squats, lunges, etc.) are more effective for weight loss and overall fitness than, say,
“Black Panther”-inspired workout 2 p.m. Saturday at the grand opening of Fitness Snob Studio; $10-$20
crunches is that using more large muscle groups requires more energy and builds more muscle, Free says. More muscle means a higher resting metabolic rate. But that has nothing to do with spot reduction. As Kahan puts it: “You can’t do more squats and expect to lose weight around your thighs.” In other words, the proximity of fat to the exercise xercise ter. you’re doing doesn’t matter. This is why the ever-present resent ads for various “ab busters” rs” are misleading. The abdominals als are a relatively small muscle group and don’t require a lot of energy to be engaged, Free says.. “Ads manipulate you with th that image — the lean model,” he says. “But the ab wheel, or whatever tever it is, didn’t make the model look ook like that.” More likely, the model el looks like that because of age, gender, conditioning, nutrition and nd genetics (and maybe a little Hollywood magic). Free says: “It has nothing to do with the ab wheel.”
A new study suggests artificial sweeteners could be linked to obesity and diabetes. The study, which researchers believe to be the largest of its kind, was presented Sunday at the 2018 Experimental Biology meeting in San Diego. Researchers fed one group of rats a diet high in sugar and another group a diet high in zero-calorie artificial sweeteners, then compared the biochemical makeup of their blood samples. “In our studies, both sugar and artificial sweeteners seem to exhibit negative effects linked to obesity and diabetes, albeit through very different mechanisms from each other,” study author Brian Hoffmann says. The study has not been published. (EXPRESS)

deciding the what and the how with each potential outing? That allows for changes of heart, too — like his realizing your absence from a barbecue isn’t fatal, or your discovering that you miss talking about the Instant Pot with your sister-inlaw. And have you even offered them feedback on their behavior? Perhaps giving them a tangible opportunity to change can be part of the plan as well.
support as they age. My sister is so wrapped up in her own life that she sees them a third as much as I do. She never asks for updates, and she never volunteers to help out with their home upkeep. I do their taxes, take my mother to doctors’ appointments, mow their lawn. I have begun to resent that my sister just assumes I’ll do it, without ever asking or thanking. DOING IT ALL This will go better if you try not to make judgments about how much she cares about them — or at least don’t verbalize those judgments. Her passivity has many potential causes, including her assuming that you prefer things this way, or not wanting to step on your toes. (Hey, I’m a benefitof-doubt giver.) So, bring it up. Tell her that as your parents age, you’d like there to be more of a feeling of teamwork, with better collaboration, communication and planning. Maybe that means delegating some tasks; maybe it means she learns to say “thank you and that’s enough. Or maybe she can begin to develop her own domains of responsibility with them. Progress will start with a conversation, rather than a condemnation.

What a hottie mess! Singles flirt and fight for ‘Ex on the Beach’

MTV
I think John Milton, the late, great English poet, must have reincarnated himself and come up with the MTV series “Ex on the Beach” (9 p.m. Thursdays), because 10 swinging singles are plopped down in a beach house in Hawaii — and then it turns into “Paradise Lost” when their exes show up. As the host, rapper and actor Romeo, puts it: “For some of you, paradise is about to turn into your own personal hell.” So it’s the fall of man all over again! And the contestants are nearly as naked as Adam and Eve. The men are mainly shirtless and the women favor itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny bikinis. The singles are stars of reality shows and social media — but not megastars. Chase McNary says to “fashion influencer” Victoria Alario: “I was on ‘The Bachelorette.’ ” She stares blankly: “Oh, were you?” At first, everybody tries to have sex with everybody else. Then, ex-lovers arrive. This one cheated on that one, this one lied to that one. Some want revenge. Others want to see if there’s still a spark or if their

ex can change. Meanwhile, Chase tells his ex Skyler that Victoria came on to him, but the camera reveals that he sought out Victoria, saying: “If I said let’s go upstairs and have sex right now, you’d say…?” Oh, Chase … So there you have it, a batch of squabbling, lying, unfaithful, shrieking, screaming humans gathered together for kissing and dissing on the beach. To quote another great English author, Billy Shakespeare, “Lord, what fools these mortals be.” But it is entertaining to watch their tomfoolery. CANCER (June 21-July 22) What you’re after is likely to be available to you at the most difficult moments today. You can have what you want only by challenging yourself. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) It’s time for you to stop putting all your eggs in one basket; you must consider other options and be willing to start small. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) What you say today is likely to be remembered for some time — not necessarily for its overt content, but for its many hidden messages.

By Capital Weather Gang
58 | 50 TODAY: This is an old-fashioned rainy day as low pressure slowly tracks up the Mid-Atlantic coast drawing in moisture and chilly air. Temperatures will hover in the 50s much of the day, and rain amounts should average between 0.25 and 0.5 inches. Occasional rain is likely tonight and another 0.25 to 0.5 inches could fall.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
Timing counts for much today; you don’t want to do anything for which others are not yet ready because its overall impact isn’t likely to last. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Others come to you with certain requests that may surprise you today. Still, you are able to provide what is needed in your unique way.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You
have much to offer today, but the opportunity to do so may not arise unless you manufacture it. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You’re likely to progress more quickly than expected today, despite a possible staffing turnover that has you working with a few novices.

The Duchess of Cambridge gave birth on Monday to a new prince. Kate’s 8-pound, 7-ounce boy was born at 11:01 a.m. at St. Mary’s Hospital in London. Around 6 p.m., Kate emerged alongside Prince William, holding the tiny royal highness wrapped in a white lace shawl. The new baby, whose name has not been announced, is fifth in line to the British throne, behind elder siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Charlotte is the first royal daughter to stay ahead of a younger brother in the line of succession. Before the rules were changed in 2012, male heirs took precedence. (AP)
