A garden club’s quiet demise CULTURE Chris Keller is sitting at a table in the living room of his leafy Garrett Park, Md., home. Outside, a gale is whipping the dogwood and maple branches back and forth. Keller, 75, seems oblivious to the windstorm; he is sipping an iced tea and thinking about the quiet demise of a Washington institution that began as the Men’s Garden Club of Montgomery County in 1946. The club was created by a handful of men in the BethesdaChevy Chase area at a time when the sexes were less socially integrated and most garden clubs were for women. The founders were serious gardeners and tilled Victory Gardens during the war. Many were from the ranks of government, including the Departments of State and Justice, and journalists with major news organizations. It once had close to 200 members. But now with a dwindling membership, it is like an ancient and barely surviving oak, hollow and mostly branchless.
DOUG KAPUSTIN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
Once robust, a local social organization has withered over time
Chris Keller is the last president of the Metropolitan Washington Garden Club, founded in 1946 as the Men’s Garden Club of Montgomery County.
Such a specimen might be spared the ax for the sake of posterity, but there is no such reprieve for the garden club, which was re-formed in 2006 as the co-ed Metropolitan Washington Garden Club. The last meeting was held months ago.
It has fallen to Keller, as the club’s president, to disburse its remaining funds and turn out the lights. “Being the last officer standing, I have something akin to survivor’s guilt,” he said. T he demise of t he club marks the end of an era in the
metropolis — a small, unnoticed thing, perhaps, except its passing seems to signal the end, too, of a fading social fabric that came to define life in Washington after World War II. The reasons for the club’s decline are complicated. Keller notes that Washington’s highpriced housing market requires double-income earners. The demands of contemporary childrearing and the pressures of the modern workplace make club membership tough. Some members were in it for the annual spring bulb program and had planted enough. Exploding populations of deer have made gardening almost impossible in parts of suburban Maryland, not to mention the rabbits. “I think the whole nature of gardening is being affected by a lot of things,” Keller said. Keller was drawn to the club by the arrival of an unsolicited invitation to join AARP when he turned 50. “It said, ‘Welcome to your golden years,’ or something like that, which just depressed me immensely. My wife said, ‘Why don’t you go to the club,’ and when I arrived I was welcomed as the gardening kid.” ADRIAN HIGGINS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Utility blamed for fatal blast
PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY
Woman indicted in crash that left 5 children dead
SILVER SPRING A gas company’s faulty equipment is the most likely cause of an explosion at a Montgomery County apartment complex that killed seven people in 2016, according to federal report issued Tuesday. The explosion and fire at the Flower Branch apartments in Silver Spring caused a partial building collapse and sent 68 people, including three firefighters, to the hospital. The National Transportation Safety Board has been investigating the cause of the explosion for nearly three years, and officials there called it one of their most difficult investigations because so much evidence was destroyed in the building collapse and fire. At a meeting Tuesday, the board unanimously adopted the findings of its investigators, who determined that a faulty regulator left unconnected to a vent pipe inside a basement meter room most likely caused the explosion. Washington Gas, the company responsible for maintaining the equipment the NTSB blames for the explosion, has disputed the board’s findings. Washington Gas President and CEO Adrian Chapman issued a statement Tuesday saying the utility remains saddened by the tragedy and committed to safety. “However, we disagree with their findings as we don’t believe the evidence indicates failure of our equipment that night,” Chapman said.
JABIN BOTSFORD (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Federal board finds faulty equipment responsible for 2016 explosion in Silver Spring
An explosion in 2016 at Flower Branch apartments in Silver Spring left seven people dead and dozens more injured.
The board’s findings do not just point a finger at Washington Gas. The board also found multiple communication gaps and missed opportunities to correct the leak that might have prevented the explosion. NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said people around the complex smelled natural gas six different times in the weeks and months before the explosion, but nobody ever called the gas company to report a possible leak. Most glaringly, a complex resident called 911 to report the smell of natural gas on July 25 that year, about two weeks before
the explosion. Firefighters responded to the scene and could not detect natural gas. But they were thwarted from conducting a thorough investigation because they couldn’t gain access to the meter room from which the leak likely emanated. The locks had recently been changed and firefighters didn’t have access to the correct key, even though county code requires that firefighters have such access. Because no leak was detected, firefighters did not call Washington Gas. Neither did the 911 dispatcher. The NTSB is recommending
that 911 dispatchers automatically call the gas company any time a person calls to report the smell of natural gas, rather than relying on the public to make the call. Patrick Regan, a lawyer representing about 70 survivors and family members of those killed in the explosion, said the NTSB’s findings will be helpful in their case against both the utility and the company that manages the apartment complex. That lawsuit has been held in abeyance as the NTSB conducted its investigation. “There’s plenty of blame to go around,” Regan said. MATTHEW BARAKAT (AP)

The bill, introduced by Council member Charles Allen, D-Ward 6, aims to expedite plans to redesign Florida Avenue NE into a safer space for pedestrians and bicyclists following the death Friday of David Salovesh, 54, of Northeast Washington. Police had attempted to stop a van when its driver sped away, hit a vehicle at 12th Street and Florida Avenue NE and then struck Salovesh, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

ISIS claims bombings; officials say intelligence failed to take action

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA As the death toll from the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka rose to 321 on Tuesday, the Islamic State group claimed responsibility and released images that purported to show the attackers. Meanwhile, the country’s prime minister warned that several suspects armed with explosives are still at large. Another top government official said the suicide bombings at the churches, hotels and other sites were carried out by Islamic fundamentalists in apparent retaliation for the New Zealand mosque massacres last month that a white supremacist has been charged with carrying out. The Islamic State group, which has lost all the territory it once held in Iraq and Syria, has made a series of unsupported claims of responsibility. Sri Lankan authorities have blamed the attacks on National Thowheed Jamath, a little-known Islamic extremist group in the island nation. Its leader, alternately known as Mohammed Zahran or Zahran Hashmi, became known to Muslim leaders three years ago for his incendiary speeches online. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that investigators were still determining the extent of the bombers’ foreign links. ISIS’ Aamaq news agency released an image purporting

to show the leader of the attackers, standing amid seven others whose faces are covered. The group did not provide any other evidence for its claim. Meanwhile, in an address to Parliament, Ruwan Wijewardene, the state minister of defense, said “weakness” within Sri Lanka’s security apparatus led to the failure to prevent the nine bombings. “Intelligence units were aware of this attack and a group of responsible people were informed about the impending attack,” Wijewardene said. “However, this information has been circulated among only a few officials.” Wijewardene also said the government had evidence that the bombings were carried out
“by an Islamic fundamentalist group” in retaliation for the March 15 mosque shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand, that killed 50 people. The office of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern issued a statement responding to the Christchurch claim that described Sri Lanka’s investigation as “in its early stages,” saying New Zealand has not seen any evidence that would back up such a claim. In a live address to the nation late Tuesday, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena said he also was kept in the dark on the intelligence about the planned attacks and vowed to “take stern action” against the officials who failed to share the
information. He also pledged “a complete restructuring” of the security forces. As Sri Lanka’s leaders wrangled over the apparent intelligence failure, security was out in force for a national day of mourning Tuesday. In the city of Negombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, the archbishop of Colombo, held a funeral service in the courtyard of St. Sebastian Church, where 110 people were killed in one of the bombings. The service lasted several hours, with caskets brought in three and four at a time, accompanied by sobbing relatives. The coffins were then taken to a mass burial site and covered by three earth movers. EMILY SCHMALL AND KRISHAN FRANCIS (AP)

nation+world Rep. Cummings decries ‘open defiance’ as Kline fails to testify at hearing WASHINGTON The chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee says the White House is in “open defiance” of his panel after lawyers advised a former official to ignore a subpoena related to the committee’s investigation of White House security clearances. Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., said he is consulting other lawmakers about scheduling a vote
to hold former White House personnel security director Carl Kline in contempt of Congress after Kline did not show up on Tuesday for a scheduled deposition. The committee subpoenaed Kline after one of his former subordinates told the panel that dozens of people in Trump’s administration were granted security clearances despite “disqualifying issues” in their backgrounds. The fight over Kline’s appearance comes as the White House has stonewalled the panel in several investigations. On Monday,
Trump and his business organization sued Cummings to block a subpoena that seeks years of the president’s financial records. The complaint said a subpoena from Cummings “has no legitimate legislative purpose” and accuses Democrats of harassing Trump. Cummings said in a statement that “it appears that the president believes that the Constitution does not apply to his White House, that he may order officials at will to violate their legal obligations, and that he may obstruct attempts by Congress to conduct oversight.” MARY CLARE JALONICK (AP)

How’s tech ruining us now? Recent reports say technology is responsible for making us lazy, stealing our personal health information, invading our homes and spying on us while we shop. And with research firm Gartner predicting that 20 billion internet-connected things will be online by next year, expect more stories about boundaries being tested. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP/EXPRESS)

Justices weigh census question on citizenship
Computers are to blame for our never leaving our seats
Health apps are selling our personal information
Nest is effectively letting hackers into our houses
Cameras at supermarkets are guessing our age, mood
Americans are becoming increasingly sedentary, spending almost a third of their waking hours sitting down, and computer use is partly to blame, according to a study published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Over almost a decade, average daily sitting time increased by roughly an hour, to about eight hours for U.S. teens and almost 6 ½ hours for adults, according to the researchers. That includes school and work hours, but leisure-time computer use among all ages increased too. By 2016, at least half of American kids and adults spent an hour or more of leisure time daily using computers. The researchers analyzed U.S. government health surveys from almost 52,000 Americans, starting at age 5, from 2001 to 2016. Studies have shown that prolonged periods of sitting can increase risks for obesity, diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. Only about 1 in 4 U.S. adults and 1 in 5 teens get the government’s recommended amounts of daily physical activity.
Many health apps designed for people who are battling depression or want to quit smoking track a user’s progress. According to a study published Friday in the journal JAMA Network Open, many of those apps are sharing the personal details they collect with third parties, like Google and Facebook, without consent. Researchers say the findings are especially important in mental health, given the risks of having sensitive information shared unknowingly. And because many health apps aren’t subject to government regulation, researchers say, consumers and clinicians must contend with what information is being entered into these apps — and who else can access it. Earlier this month, The Washington Post reported that data compiled by popular periodand pregnancy-tracking apps often is not confined to users. Rather, the apps give employers and health insurers a lens into users’ personal information about pregnancy and childbirth — often under the umbrella of corporate wellness.
There has been a string of reports recently of Nest devices being hacked: One family was told via their Nest Cam that there was an imminent missile attack from North Korea. Another found pornography playing on their Nest Cam with their almost-3-year-old nearby. Software designed to help people break into websites and devices has gotten easy to use, and many companies, including Nest, have effectively chosen to let some hackers slip through the cracks rather than impose an array of inconvenient countermeasures that could detract from their users’ experience. The result is that anyone with an internet connection and rudimentary skills has the ability to virtually break into homes through devices designed to keep physical intruders out. Nest could make it more difficult for hackers to break into cameras, for instance, by making the log-in process more cumbersome. But doing so would introduce what Silicon Valley calls “friction” — anything that can stand in the way of someone using a product.
New technology is being trotted out at supermarket retailers where cameras try to guess your age, gender or mood as you walk by. The intent is to use the information to show you targeted, real-time ads on in-store video screens. Companies are pitching retailers to bring the technology into their physical stores as a way to better compete with online rivals like Amazon that are already armed with troves of information on their customers and their buying habits. With store cameras, you may not even realize you’re being watched unless you happen to notice the penny-sized lenses. And that has raised concerns over privacy. At the National Retail Federation trade show in New York earlier this year, a smart shelf on display by Mood Media tried to detect “happiness” or “fear” as people stood in front it — information a store could use to gauge reaction to a product on the shelf or an ad on a screen. Cameras are in just a handful of stores around the country … for now. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)
Vladimir Putin will meet with Kim Jong Un in Russia’s Far East on Thursday
COURTS Despite evidence that millions of Hispanics and immigrants could go uncounted, the Supreme Court’s conservative majority seemed ready Tuesday to uphold the Trump administration’s plan to inquire about U.S. citizenship on the 2020 census in a case that could affect American elections for the next decade. There appeared to be a clear divide between the court’s liberal and conservative justices in arguments in a case that could affect how many seats states have in the House and their share of federal dollars over the next 10 years. States with a large number of immigrants tend to vote Democratic. Three lower courts have so far blocked the plan to ask every U.S. resident about citizenship in the census, finding that the question would discourage many immigrants from being counted. Two of the three judges also ruled that asking if people are citizens would violate the provision of the Constitution that calls for a count of the population, regardless of citizenship status, every 10 years. Three conservative justices, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Clarence Thomas, had expressed skepticism about the challenge to the question in earlier stages of the case, but Chief Justice John Roberts and Brett Kavanaugh had been silent. A decision is expected by late June, in time to print census forms for the April 2020 population count. MARK SHERMAN (AP)

nation+world Myanmar court rejects appeal of pair held over coverage of crackdown NAYPYITAW, MYANMAR Myanmar’s Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the final appeal of two Reuters journalists and upheld seven-year prison sentences for their reporting on the military’s brutal crackdown on Rohingya Muslims. Wa Lone, 32, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 28, earlier this month shared with their colleagues the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting,
one of journalism’s highest honors. The reporters were arrested in December 2017 and sentenced last September after being accused of illegally possessing official documents, a violation of a colonial-era law. The court did not give a reason for its decision, which was quickly decried by rights advocates. Myanmar’s military launched a brutal counterinsurgency campaign in the western state of Rakhine in 2017, driving more than 700,000 members of the Muslim Rohingya minority to
flee to Bangladesh. The reporters had worked on an investigation of the killing of 10 Rohingya villagers in Inn Din village, for which the government last year said seven soldiers were sentenced to up 10 years in prison with hard labor. Both have denied the charges against them and contend they were framed by police. International rights groups, media freedom organizations, U.N. experts and several governments condemned their conviction as an injustice and an attack on freedom of the press. AUNG NAING SOE (AP)

Displaced polar bear is back home
A polar bear found roaming around a village in eastern Russia, hundreds of miles from its usual habitat, has been airlifted back home. The exhausted-looking bear had apparently traveled on an ice floe from remote Chukotka to a village about 434 miles south. Environmentalists say wild animals such as polar bears are suffering from shrinking hunting grounds and receding ice as the Arctic gets warmer. (AP)

Nicklas Backstrom, left, and Alex Ovechkin have scored a combined nine goals this series.
NICK WASS (AP)
NO PLACE LIKE IT
CAPITALS VS. HURRICANES | GAME 7: 7:30 TONIGHT, NBCSN
Can they get any help?
Ovechkin, Backstrom are carrying the Caps as they enter their 12th Game 7 together STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS A few long-standing traditions mercifully ended once Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom finally raised the Stanley Cup last June. The weight of having never won was lifted and the same old questions about whether they’d ever get it done came to a screeching halt. But Stanley Cup champs or not, there is one rite of spring they can’t seem to dodge. When the Capitals host the Hurricanes tonight, Ovechkin and Backstrom will be skating in their 12th career Game 7 together — the most by any two teammates in NHL history. “There’s pressure on both teams, Ovechkin said, “but it’s a good chance for us to beat them at home. The way Ovechkin and Backstrom are producing this spring, the Capitals would be missing a tremendous opportunity if they don’t pull this off. “They’ve carried us for the most part, coach Todd Reirden
said Tuesday. While the Capitals need more from 20-goal scorers Evgeny Kuznetsov and Jakub Vrana — neither has scored this series — Ovechkin and Backstrom have arguably been playing some of the best playoff hockey of their careers. Sure, there was more at stake last May and June, but as far as an individual series, Round 1 against Carolina has been vintage Ovechkin and Backstrom. “We wouldn’t be in this situation without them, goaltender Braden Holtby said. “In terms of play, Ovi’s right at the top right now in every area. He’s playing hard, and it’s on us to follow him now and play our best game. Ovechkin has four goals and eight points in six games, but he’s also set the tone with speed and physicality. In Washington’s 6-0 Game 5 win, Ovechkin had a goal, two primary assists and a game-high 11 hits — his highest hit total in a postseason game decided in regulation.
Nationals-Rockies ended after Express’ deadline
Not a lucky number Capitals fans have reason to hate the words “Game 7. Washington has played a league-high 16 Game 7s since 1987, but has a modest 5-11 record. Their Game 7 winning percentage (.313) is the worst in NHL history (minimum 10 games). Capitals forward Carl Hagelin is 8-1 in career Game 7s, but three of those wins came against Washington. Meanwhile, Carolina captain Justin Williams, nicknamed Mr. Game 7, is the leading Game 7 scorer in NHL history with seven goals and 14 points in eight games. B.R.
“He’s the best goal scorer maybe in the entire history of the game and for him to play physical like that, he affects guys, center Nic Dowd said. “You saw it in Game 5. It’s his play away from the puck as well as the ability to score big-time goals that makes him such an elite player. It’s easy to forget that Ovechkin, 33, is a 14-year veteran with
more than 1,000 games on his NHL odometer. Seemingly, at some point, he will slow down. This spring isn’t that point, and with veteran T.J. Oshie out indefinitely, both Ovechkin and Backstrom are doing much of the heavy lifting. Backstrom, 31, has already matched his personal best with five goals in a single series — a mark he previously reached in 2010. “They’re superstars in the league doing superstar stuff, forward Devante Smith-Pelly said. To make another deep postseason run this year, the Capitals will need more from down the depth chart. But if that opportunity does come up in the weeks ahead, it will be thanks largely to Ovechkin and Backstrom’s first-round contributions. “They’ve been outstanding, Holtby said. “They’ve been the consistency to our group, and that’s why they’re our leaders. BEN RABY (FOR EXPRESS)

Home team undefeated this series After Monday’s Game 6 loss in Raleigh, the Capitals were deflated but eager to return home for Game 7. Between Washington and Carolina, the home team is 6-0 in this series. The Hurricanes have fed off their crowd at PNC Arena, where postseason hockey has returned for the first time in 10 years. The Capitals have jumped out to early leads and never trailed in any of their three home games in the series. Washington’s power play is 5-for-12 at home, and 1-for-9 on the road. “We’ve played well in front of our home crowd and we use them, Caps forward Nic Dowd said. “We work our [butts] off all year to get home-ice advantage and we’ve earned it for this exact moment. B.R.

New Kings coach Walton accused of sexual assault
Due to big signing bonuses, 2019 baseball payroll down
Ex-USC coach pleads guilty in college admissions case
New Sacramento Kings coach Luke Walton has been accused of sexual assault in a lawsuit by a former sports reporter. Kelli Tennant filed the suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Monday, contending Walton assaulted her in a hotel room in Santa Monica while he was an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors. She said Walton continued to harass her after he became coach of the Lakers and she was working as a broadcaster in Los Angeles for Spectrum SportsNet and SportsNet LA. Walton and the Lakers parted ways this month, and the Kings hired him last week. (AP)
Big deals for Bryce Harper, Mike Trout and others that included large signing bonuses masked an otherwise flat market for the second straight offseason that caused Major League Baseball’s openingday payrolls to drop by $43 million for 2019. However, payrolls rose by $131 million when using the averages of multiyear contracts. Since the end of last season, teams agreed to a record $4.195 billion in guarantees beyond 2019, breaking the previous mark for out-year commitments of $3.414 billion set after the 2013 season, according to figures compiled by the commissioner’s office. (AP)
Two more people charged in a sweeping college admissions scandal have agreed to plead guilty. Authorities said Tuesday that former USC assistant women’s soccer coach Laura Janke will plead guilty to racketeering conspiracy and cooperate with federal authorities. Toby MacFarlane, a former senior executive at a title insurance company, will also plead guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud. Authorities say Janke helped create bogus athletic profiles to make MacFarlane’s children look like star athletes. MacFarlane was among 33 prominent parents charged. (AP)

ON THE MARKET
Cashing out on condos REAL ESTATE Selling condominiums for a profit can be a challenge. Condo fees, building amenities and the role played by homeowners associations can complicate a sale. Still, the old notion of a detached house gaining value faster than a condo is being debunked by recent data that tracks appreciation. Research by Trulia indicates that the median appreciation on condos from 2012 to 2017 in the 100 largest metro areas in the United States was 38.4 percent, as compared with 27.9 percent for single-family dwellings. Don Canada, who works for a government contractor, resides in Westlight, one of the most expensive condominium buildings in Washington. Before that, he lived at 3303 Water St. NW — another pricey address — and before that, at Market Square East in Penn Quarter. He’s come out ahead with each jump by employing a simple and compact strategy. “I typically buy the smallest unit in the nicest building,” Canada, 57, says. “You have to start small and be patient. You can’t flip a condo every five years and expect to make a hefty profit on it.” His first unit at Market Square was 578 square feet, for which he paid $150,000 in 1992. He lived there 10 years and sold it for $300,000. Next came Water Street. “I wanted to live in Georgetown,” he says, “but I could only afford a 950-square-foot unit. I think I paid $450,000 for it, then sold it for $950,000, but it took 13 years.” In 2008, he had a contract on 22 West, another high-end building in the West End, but the contract fell through just before the market crashed. He stayed put until 2017, when he bought

Trying to profit? With a simple strategy, one D.C. man has come out ahead — twice.
“You have to start small and be patient,” says Don Canada, top, who has had properties in the West End, above, Georgetown and Penn Quarter.
a two-bedroom, 1,700-squarefoot condo for $1,806,250 in the Westlight complex in the West End, which includes apartments and condos. Canada says he was specifically interested in the building because he’s a fan of Anthony Lanier, one of D.C.’s most prolific
developers. “His personality comes through in his buildings,” Canada says. “He’s a great asset to the city because there’s not a lot of adventurous design — although I think it’s been changing a lot in the last five years.” Unlike Lanier’s earlier projects, Westlight’s units were
offered as-is with no options for picking flooring, fixtures, appliances or finishes. Undeterred, Canada sold his place on Water Street and lived in the new place for three months before deciding he needed to customize things. He called in Vincent Sagart, principal of Poliform | sagartstudio in Georgetown, who had built Canada’s closets in the Water Street unit. A discussion about closet improvements in his new condo quickly accelerated into other areas of the space. “He loved the space but there were things he couldn’t figure out,” Sagart says. “He knew what we could do in terms of wardrobes and dressing rooms but he had uneasiness about the rest of the space. It’s a beautiful volume architecturally, but almost too stark and very monochromatic.” Canada estimates he invested about $150,000 to get his as-is condo totally customized. After nearly doubling his space, Canada purchased more furniture at Contemporaria. He can take the furniture with him, but the built-ins will stay if he decides to move — which is a distinct possibility. The homeowner is a bit lonesome for Georgetown and adjusting to the somewhat undiscovered charms of the West End. “I didn’t want to leave Georgetown, but this is the only new construction building that’s close to Georgetown,” Canada says. “It’s only a five-minute walk and it has a much more urban feel to it. It has taller buildings, wider streets and wider sidewalks.” Canada can also walk to a grocery store from his new pad and says he believes he’s once again made the correct, long-term real estate decision. 5 top kitchen trends for 2019 Avocado toast is in. But avocado kitchens are not. Whether you’re remodeling or buying a new home, kitchen designers are a good source of inspiration. Recent surveys reveal subtle and not-so-subtle shifts in kitchen designs, including a new appetite for color. Here are five kitchen trends for 2019. MICHELE LERNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
STACY ZARIN GOLDBERG
Colorful cabinets and appliances
Homeowners are increasingly adding color to their kitchens, often in the form of painted cabinets or appliances with bright exteriors.
Painted cabinets, including the base of a center island, are brightening more kitchens today, as are appliances with bright exteriors. “Colorful cabinets or pops of color are very much in for kitchen design,” says Allie Mann, a senior designer with Case Design/ Remodeling in Falls Church. “While shades of blue remain a popular go-to color, we’re starting to see more and more green accents gaining interest.”
Minimalist kitchens
High-tech features
People want a clean, clutter-free kitchen, so appliances like blenders and mixers are being placed in hidden yet accessible cabinets and drawers, says Lita Dirks, owner of Lita Dirks & Co., a model home merchandising company in Colorado. Appliance lifts can be built into kitchen cabinets to make it easier to access small but heavy appliances. Refrigerators and dishwashers can be built into cabinets that disguise their function.
The top tech innovations anticipated to dominate kitchens over the next three years include mobile-device accommodations, such as the ability to control appliances with your smartphone; voice-enabled home automation platforms; and safety technology. While refrigerators that provide inventory updates are available, they are far down the list to be widely adopted in the next few years.
Expanded kitchen islands with storage
Engineered floors making headway
While kitchen islands aren’t new, island sizes have increased over time. According to a National Kitchen and Bath Association study of 2019 kitchen trends, just 2 % of designers surveyed created a kitchen without a center island in the past year. The majority of kitchen islands range from 12 to 35 square feet, evenly split between islands that are 12 to 23 square feet and ones that are 24 to 35 square feet.
While hardwood flooring is popular throughout the house, in a 2019 survey by the Houzz website, just 24 percent of homeowners chose it for the kitchen. Engineered flooring, such as engineered wood, vinyl and laminate, was the choice for 40 percent of homeowners. Industrial-style kitchens, which 50 percent of designers anticipate to be popular in the next three years, often have stained concrete floors.

CRITIC’S NOTEBOOK
Finding their freedom Cage the Elephant explores new ground with the confident, consistent ‘Social Cues’ ALBUM REVIEW The new Cage the Elephant album begins with a spacey, otherworldly hum that’s interrupted by throbbing, insistent knocking. That leads to some machinegun drumming and, as if a door has been opened, an infectious, high-tempo post-punk glam tune comes on. After taking a detour into fuzzy guitars, tambourines and a ’60s vibe with 2015’s “Tell Me I’m Pretty,” the Kentucky alternative rockers have put out arguably their best collection of songs with “Social Cues,” which was released Friday. The band’s sound seems more genuine. Singer Matt Shultz
punctuates the opening song, “Broken Boy,” with the occasional slurry, cocky “Yeah!” C o n f i d e n c e ‘Social Cues’ Cage the Elephant runs throughout this assured album, as if the band has finally found a hardfought consistency. Cage the Elephant’s last album was produced by Dan Auerbach, who seemed to make the band bend toward his sound. “Social Cues” is produced by John Hill, who has let the band explore and play and really just breathe. The music is bouncy and filled with swagger, even as the lyrics
reveal trauma. Broken love is a prominent theme, the product of Shultz’s marriage cracking. The superb first single, “Ready to Let Go,” brings us into a raw moment when a vacation between lovers breaks apart and the singer is “trying to hide this damage done.” Shultz isn’t angry as much as sorry in the gloomy “What I’m Becoming,” singing, “I’m so sorry, honey / For what I’m becoming.” But the album isn’t completely devoid of hope. “Let the love light guide me home,” Shultz sings on the melancholy “Skin and Bones.” There’s fatigue in “The War Is Over,” but he acknowledges there was “love was on
both sides.” The band does veer over the cliff with the overindulgent “Love’s the Only Way.” But a team-up with Beck results in the truly terrific, driving “Night Running.” The superb title track also is a raw picture of insecurity: “Hide me in the back room / Telll me when it’s over / Don’t know iff I can play this part much longer.” ” The album ends with “Good-bye,” one of the saddest and d most tender breakup songs ever r recorded: “I won’t cry / Lord d knows how hard we tried,” Shultz z sings. His heart may be broken,, but thanks to this new album,, you’ll fall in love all over again.

Kimbrough strums in the South Given the opportunity to showboat, a masterful guitarist might be expected to let ‘er rip. Not Will Kimbrough. He’s a composer too, and on the fan-funded “I Like It Down Here,” which came out Friday, his songs are the stars and the South is the subject. The snappy 10-tune set seamlessly mixes country, rock and soul in a way that sounds both rootsy and fresh. The spotlight fixates on the characters populating his songs, including the whistling homeless man in “Anything Helps” and the spiritually liberated convicted murderer in “Buddha Blues.” STEVEN WINE (AP)

Beyonce takes ‘Lemonade’ to the masses
Beyonce’s “Lemonade” was made available Tuesday on all major streaming services, including Spotify and Apple Music, three years to the day after the album was released. The record had previously been exclusive to Tidal, the streaming platform owned by her husband, JAY-Z. As part of Tuesday’s rollout, Beyonce also released the minimalist original demo of the “Lemonade” track “Sorry.” (EXPRESS)

‘Roar’ ups volume for female voices BOOK REVIEW The tag line of Irish novelist Cecelia Ahern’s “Roar,” her collection that hit shelves last week, is “Thirty Stories, One Roar.” It’s an on-the-nose message that, while every woman’s story is different, women’s collective rage is uniform — and powerful.
Ahern’s previous works, including “PS, I Love You” and “The Gift,” are funny, light and often wise. But they didn’t entirely presage “Roar,” which is funny, wise and weighty — in a very good way. After all, when you write 30 stories about the dilemmas of people who hold up half the world’s sky, things are bound to get heavy. The women in these

fables cope with discrimination, loneliness and abandonment. Some of the women have tragic outcomes. Witness “The Woman Who Blew Away,” a cautionary tale concerning a Kylie
Jenner-ish young woman whose immense success and vacuous life untether her from reality. But many more have HEAs (“happily ever afters,” in romance parlance), with the

protagonists discovering reserves of strength. And one of the funniest stories concerns a woman who farts during an important presentation — only to find herself swallowed up by a black hole populated with other women in similar states of humiliation and shame. There’s a caveat: It’s best to read just one or two fables at a time. That way you can truly appreciate their wit, pathos and imagination. Ahern includes Helen Reddy’s famous lyric “I am woman, hear me roar” as an epigraph, but she might just as easily have echoed Whitney Houston by writing, “I’m every woman. It’s all in me.” BETHANNE PATRICK (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

“I’ll just make it clear now that if I Mercy someone and they whoop my a-- because of it, I wholeheartedly accept the defeat I saved them from.” @THEBOOPGOD, joking about the news that “Mortal Kombat 11,” released Tuesday, includes Mercy, a move that originated in 1995’s “Mortal Kombat 3” and its arcade version “Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.” Unlike the game franchise’s graphic Fatality finishing moves, Mercy allows winning players to restore some of their opponent’s health, and thus grant them another chance to win.
“Will Cain really up here on ‘First Take’ saying a woman being racist is OK because it happened in the 1930s. Y’all need to do better.” @WEBELIEVEING, slamming the ESPN contributor after he
said Monday that the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Flyers were on a “fool’s errand” by refusing to play the late Kate Smith’s version of “God Bless America.” On Sunday, the Flyers also announced the removal of a statue of Smith from outside their arena. The moves came after it was revealed that Smith recorded racist songs, including “That’s Why Darkies Were Born” in 1931 and “Pickaninny Heaven” in 1933. Cain insinuated the songs should be forgiven since they are over 80 years old.
“You know ‘deviled’ is the technique and has nothing to do with ‘the devil,’ right? They’re homonyms.” AN INSTAGRAM COMMENTER, reacting
after the Duggars referred to deviled eggs by another name when making them for Easter. In an Instagram post, the extremely religious family said they were making “Yellow Pocket Angel Eggs.” While many commenters were relieved to now have an alternative name for the dish so as not to “give the devil any more popularity,” others noted that “deviled” is an 18th-century term for food made with lots of spices.

“CHRIS EVANS AND [CHRIS] HEMSWORTH CRIED SIX TIMES WATCHING ‘ENDGAME’ ... WHAT ABOUT US PEASANTS HUH?? Evans, right, who plays Captain America, revealed onstage after the viewing that he cried six times during the three-hour movie. Hemsworth, left, who plays Thor, said he cried more than six times. “Endgame” comes out Friday.

Maybe it’s time that we leave Britney alone
‘Big Little Lies’ men suddenly feel left out In Vanity Fair’s May issue, Nicole Kidman revealed that she has a group chat with “Big Little Lies” costars Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz, Shailene Woodley and Meryl Streep. “Look at the ‘Friends’ cast, they spent all that time together — they’re different because there are no men in our equation,” she said. “I mean, there are, but they’re not on the group chat.” (EXPRESS)
Britney Spears fans held a protest Monday in Los Angeles demanding that the singer be released from a local mental health treatment facility, Billboard reported. The protest was in response to rumors that Spears was being held against her will. The pop star entered a 30-day treatment program last month following her father’s deteriorating health issues. On Sunday, Spears was granted a one-day leave from the program to celebrate Easter with her family, marking her first public sighting since entering treatment. Protestors gathered outside West Hollywood City Hall with signs reading “Free Britney” and “Truth Will Set Her Free.” (EXPRESS)

Mark Ruffalo told Entertainment Tonight on Monday that he was given a “dummy script” of “Avengers: Endgame” to prevent any spoilers. “There were scenes in there that I thought we were shooting that nobody ever shot,” he said. In a 2017 “Good Morning America” interview, Ruffalo almost let slip who died in “Avengers: Infinity War” before its release date. (EXPRESS)
Prince William and Kate Middleton have released new photos of their youngest child, Prince Louis, to celebrate his first birthday on Tuesday. The photos show him playing in the garden of the family’s home in Norfolk, on England’s eastern coast. Louis, a great-grandson of Queen Elizabeth II, is fifth in line to the throne, behind his grandfather, Prince Charles; his father, Prince William; Prince George; and his sister, Princess Charlotte.
