Canine pals are a pair again ANIMALS They came in as a pair and they were adopted as a pair — a blind 12-year-old dachshund named OJ and his guide dog, a 6-year-old pit bull named Blue Dozer. The two found a new home this week, but one dog was discovered a few days later wandering on a rural road 100 miles away. In recent days, their tale, which sounds straight out of a Hallmark movie, has gone viral on social media, with thousands offering to adopt them. The dogs’ journey started when the pair were brought in last Friday to a Richmond shelter after their owner became homeless. The owner requested that they stay together. On its Facebook page, the shelter described the relationship between the two as the “cutest (and saddest) thing.” “OJ is blind and depends on Dozer to show him around,” the shelter wrote. “We can’t stand the cuteness and kindness these two share.” On Sunday, a woman, who has

not been identified, stepped forward to adopt the pair. But things soon went south for the dogs. On Tuesday, OJ was brought in to the Shenandoah Valley Animal Services center near Staunton, Va., by a man who said he found him alone on the side of a road. Tracey Meadows, acting director at the Shenandoah shelter, said Wednesday that they checked OJ and used a microchip and a tracking database to find his new owner. Meadows said the

woman told her the pit bull was with her, and that Meadows could keep OJ but that she didn’t want to give up Blue Dozer. Once word got out that OJ had been found alone in Staunton, the dogs’ tale gained attention, as people waited in suspense to learn whether they would be reunited. Christie Chipps Peters, director of the Richmond Animal Care and Control shelter, said she went back and forth talking to the new owner for hours Wednesday, trying to persuade her to give up Blue Dozer. Peters said the woman didn’t “fully understand they needed to be together.” The woman also told Peters she had received death threats via email and social media. Eventually, the owner agreed to turn over Blue Dozer and meet shelter officials in a parking lot. His best friend, OJ, was waiting. The Richmond shelter said nothing will be done with the two right away other than “snuggling them together.” They will be offered for adoption once shelter workers get through the hundreds of requests. This time, whoever adopts them will be required to sign a document promising to keep the pair together. DANA HEDGPETH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

MARYLAND Lynn and Larry Brennan’s oldest child could have remained anonymous, just three initials in federal court papers accusing the local school system of discrimination. But their son was done with secrets, and the pretending that sickened him in those dark days after puberty hit. Sophomore M.A.B. — Max Alexander Brennan — is pressing to open doors to the boys’ locker room in the latest drive for transgender rights. “It makes me sound more rebellious than I am,” Max said at home in St. Michaels. Max’s case is moving ahead after a federal judge in Baltimore ruled in March that transgender students are protected by federal law from discrimination and found for the first time that Maryland’s constitution includes protections for transgender people. Before Max, the name widely known in the cause was Gavin Grimm, a Virginia teen whose battle was on track to a Supreme Court argument, with the government defending an Obama-era

But the high court took a pass last year after the Trump administration withdrew the government’s support for Grimm. That shift left unsettled questions in communities and courtrooms throughout the country

about the treatment of transgender and non-transgender students in the already awkward realm of high school locker rooms. Within days of the ruling in Baltimore in Max’s case, the schools superintendent in Talbot County, Md., told the Brennans that Max could use the boys’ locker room. The two-paragraph letter said the school board was granting access voluntarily, not settling the legal case or making the formal policy change that Max was seeking. Max wants a guarantee that locker room access will not be revoked for him or others and that if the board changes its mind, there will be consequences. “It was forcing me to out myself to people I didn’t know and to make them see me or treat me differently,” Max said. Madaleno Jr., D-Montgomery, on Thursday debuted the first TV advertisement of the crowded Democratic gubernatorial primary race — a move designed to shore up his base in his home district. With seven major candidates competing for the nomination to challenge Republican Gov. As a result, Madaleno and some other candidates are focusing their messaging on specific geographic areas or constituencies. “We’re putting up the walls around Montgomery County,” said Keith Presley, Madaleno’s campaign manager. “No other campaigns have attempted to make serious inroads there.” (TWP)

School CEO under fire again PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY The leader of the Prince George’s County school system signed off on large pay raises for at least two central-office employees who are not among his top aides, sparking questions from critics about legality and fairness. A three-member school board minority bloc released a letter Thursday alleging that chief executive Kevin Maxwell appears to have overstepped his authority by approving several pay raises for employees who they say fall outside his purview. One employee received a 9.4 percent increase, and another 16 percent,

similarly classified positions, the board members said in their letter. “This is a reckless disregard for taxpayer dollars in Prince George’s County,” they wrote. “It is decimating the morale of hard-working employees in the school district.” Schools spokesman John White disputed the allegations, saying the pay raises were not improper. White said they required approval from the chief of human resources and the CEO, and not the school board, which the letter asserted has traditionally had authority to approve increases. “Certain board members have gone outside of the process and not allowed the process to complete and that sometimes creates confusion,” he said. Pruitt seeks to divert blame WASHINGTON Environmental P rotection Agency chief Scott Pruitt, yet another Trump administration official with his job on the line over ethical concerns, took heat from lawmakers Thursday over his profligate spending and lobbyist ties and tried to divert responsibility to underlings. The EPA administrator said “twisted” allegations against him were meant to undermine the administration’s anti-regulatory agenda, and he denied knowing details of some of the extraordinary spending done on his behalf. The public grilling at back-toback House hearings, called formally to consider EPA’s budget, came as support has appeared to erode for Pruitt among fellow Republicans after revelations about unusual security spending, firstclass flights, a sweetheart condo lease and more. Even Republicans who heartily support Pruitt’s policy agenda said his apparent lapses had to be scrutinized. Democrats excoriated him. “You are unfit to hold public office,” said Rep. Frank Pallone of New Jersey. “You’ve become the poster

child for the abuse of public trust,” said Rep. John Sarbanes of Maryland. Although some Republicans rallied around Pruitt, reviews were mixed. Rep. John Shimkus of Illinois, chairman of the first panel that questioned Pruitt, said afterward that the EPA chief was “a little vague,” adding, “It’s never a good idea to blame your staff in public.” Asked whether Pruitt should resign, he said it’s

not his call and suggested it’s up to President Trump. Pruitt gave clipped, bureaucratic answers to questions on the many financial allegations against him, relaxing when Republicans on the panel gave him openings to expand on his policy steps at EPA. Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer of North Dakota said that as far as the EPA chief’s critics were concerned, “I think the greatest sin you’ve done is you’ve

actually done what President Trump ran on.” Trump has stood by his EPA chief, but behind closed doors, White House officials concede Pruitt’s job is in serious jeopardy. Pruitt has faced a steady trickle of revelations involving pricey trips in first-class seats and unusual security spending, including a $43,000 soundproof booth for making private phone calls. He also demanded 24-houra-day protection by armed officers, resulting in a 20-member security detail that blew through overtime budgets and racked up expenses approaching $3 million. The EPA chief acknowledged under sharp questioning that he, in fact, knew something about huge pay raises given to two women on his staff — at least one of them a friend — after insisting weeks ago that he didn’t approve the raises and didn’t know who did. Pruitt said Thursday he actually delegated authority to chief of staff Ryan Jackson to give the raises but didn’t know the exact amounts. Senior legal counsel Sarah Greenwalt received a raise of more than $66,000, bringing her salary to $164,200, and scheduling director Millian Hupp saw her salary jump from $48,000 to $114,590. He may intervene in Justice Department

Pompeo, Kim weren’t scheduled to meet

Trump acknowledged that his attorney Michael Cohen represented him “with this crazy Stormy Daniels deal,” after previously denying any knowledge of a payment Cohen made to the porn actress, who alleges an affair with Trump. He said Cohen did “nothing wrong,” and “no campaign funds” were used.

Trump hinted that he may get more deeply involved in the management of his Justice Department, which is overseeing a special counsel probe into possible Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. He said he tries to “stay away from” intervening, before adding, “But at some point I won’t.”

Discussing Mike Pompeo’s secret trip to North Korea, Trump said, “He wasn’t supposed to meet with Kim Jong Un. They arranged that.” He said Pompeo and Kim spoke for more than an hour over Easter weekend. Trump added that there are “great pictures” of the meeting, which the White House later released.

WASHINGTONPOST.COM THE FIX

Trump’s remark on Fox program might hurt him President Trump made a rare public comment about the Michael Cohen-Stormy Daniels case Thursday, playing down the lawyer’s work for him and insisting he didn’t know about the business deals of Cohen, above. But Trump also said something that might hurt him. While describing Cohen’s allegedly limited work for him, Trump confirmed to “Fox and Friends” that Cohen “represented” him in the Daniels hush-money case. “Michael would represent me, and represent me on some things,” Trump said. “He represents me — like with this crazy Stormy Daniels deal, he represented me.” Daniels’ attorney, Michael Avenatti, said that this constitutes a “hugely damning admission.” But does it? Cohen had previously acknowledged having “facilitated” the payment to Daniels, but Trump had said he didn’t know about it. Legally speaking, it may matter that Trump acknowledged this action was taken in Cohen’s capacity as his attorney. Experts generally agree that Trump faces an impossible choice. He can either disown Cohen’s actions — which would undermine both his claims to attorney-client privilege and the nondisclosure agreement that Daniels signed — or he can own them and potentially implicate himself in Cohen’s actions. NORRISTOWN, PA. Bill Cosby was convicted Thursday of drugging and molesting a woman in the first big celebrity trial of the #MeToo era, completing the spectacular downfall of a comedian who broke racial barriers on his way to TV superstardom as “America’s Dad.” Cosby, 80, could end up spending his final years in prison after a jury concluded he sexually violated Temple University employee Andrea Constand at his Philadelphia mansion in 2004. He stared straight ahead as the verdict was read but moments later lashed out at District Attorney Kevin Steele, who demanded Cosby be sent immediately to jail. Steele told the judge Cosby has an airplane and might flee. Cosby angrily denied he has a plane and called Steele an “a--hole.” Judge Steven O’Neill decided Cosby can remain free on $1 million bail while he awaits sentencing but restricted him to Montgomery County, where his home is. No sentencing date was set. Shrieks erupted in the courtroom when the verdict was announced, and some of Cosby’s accusers cried. Constand remained stoic, then hugged her lawyer. The jury of seven men and five women deliberated 14 hours over two days. The verdict came after a twoweek retrial in which prosecutors had more courtroom weapons at their disposal than the first time: They put five other women on the stand who testified that Cosby, married for 54 years, drugged and violated them, too. Cosby could get up to 10 years in prison on each of the three counts of aggravated indecent assault. He is likely to get less than that, but given his age, even a

modest term could mean he will die behind bars. Constand, 45, told jurors that Cosby knocked her out with three blue pills he called “your friends” and then penetrated her with his fingers as she lay immobilized, unable to resist or say no. Cosby claimed the encounter was consensual. It was the only criminal case

to arise from a barrage of allegations from more than 60 women who said the former “The Cosby Show” star drugged and molested them over a span of five decades. The onslaught all but destroyed his career and his good-guy image. Cosby’s new defense team called Constand a “con artist” and “pathological liar” who

framed Cosby to get rich. Constand sued Cosby after prosecutors initially declined to file charges, settling with him for nearly $3.4 million over a decade ago. Cosby himself had long ago confirmed sordid revelations about drugs and extramarital sex. In a deposition he gave as part of Constand’s lawsuit, Cosby acknowledged he had obtained quaaludes to give to women he wanted to have sex with. It was Cosby’s reputation as a public moralist that prompted a federal judge, on a request from The Associated Press, to unseal portions of the deposition. Its release in 2015 set Cosby’s downfall in motion, prompting authorities to reopen the criminal investigation and bring charges. The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission. Constand has done so. MICHAEL R. SISAK AND CLAUDIA LAUER (AP)

POLITICS Ronny L. Jackson, President Trump’s embattled nominee to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs, withdrew from consideration Thursday amid growing allegations of misconduct, including overprescribing drugs, wrecking a government vehicle after getting drunk at a Secret Service going-away party and poor leadership that raised questions about the White House vetting process. “The allegations against me are completely false and fabricated,” Jackson, the White House physician, said. “If they had any merit, I would not have been selected, promoted and entrusted to serve in such a sensitive and important role as physician to three presidents over the past 12 years.” Jackson, 50, told colleagues Wednesday that he had grown frustrated with the nomination process, according to two White House officials. He was a surprise nominee to succeed David Shulkin, an Obama-era holdover once lauded by Trump, who was fired March 28. Trump said on Fox News on Thursday that he had another candidate to lead Veterans Affairs in mind. He noted that the possible nominee has more political experience than Jackson. Trump also accused Democrats of derailing the nomination of “an incredible man.” LISA REIN, JOHN WAGNER AND JOSH DAWSEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The new secretary of state immediately dashed off to Europe, in an energetic start befitting the high-stakes issues awaiting him, from Iran to North Korea. Stage-managing a summit What to expect as Kim crosses into S. Korea for nuclear, peace talks

theoretically in charge of Kim’s security while he is on the southern side of the line.

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA South Korean President Moon Jae-in’s government is pulling out all the stops to create the most conducive environment for an inter-Korean summit that it hopes will usher in a new era of engagement between the estranged neighbors. Here’s what to expect when Kim Jong Un on Friday morning (Thursday night EDT) becomes the first North Korean leader to cross the military demarcation line that has divided this peninsula since the Korean War ended in 1953.

The 34-year-old leader will be accompanied by bodyguards from the Guard Command, a branch of the Korean People’s Army, and the Pyongyang Defense Command. North Korean soldiers haven’t been able to cross into the South since a 1976 ax murder, when North Koreans killed two American soldiers who were cutting down a tree that blocked their view. Coincidentally, Moon was serving with South Korean special forces in the DMZ during that incident.

HWANG KWANG-MO/YONHAP (AP)

Who’s Kim bringing with him?

North Korean soldiers, at top of photo, and South Korean soldiers stand at the border village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone on Thursday.

What will be discussed? There are three items on the agenda for Friday: denuclearization, creating a peace regime and improving inter-Korean ties. The second and third items have already been negotiated and the results agreed to, according to local media reports. Moon will propose the opening of an inter-Korean liaison office and establishing a joint committee to promote political, military and economic exchanges, the left-leaning Hankyoreh reported. But on denuclearization, the most difficult issue and the one of most interest to the U.S., the discussion will be carried out by the two leaders directly, the right-wing Chosun Ilbo reported, citing an unnamed Blue House official.

How rare is this meeting? This is not the first inter-Korean summit, but it is the first that South Korea has hosted. Kim Dae-jung traveled to Pyongyang in 2000 to meet then-leader Kim Jong Il, the current leader’s father. Then, in 2007, Roh Moo-hyun followed suit, traveling to Pyongyang and meeting Kim Jong Il. At the time, Moon was Roh’s chief of staff and head of the summit preparation committee.

Who’s in charge of security? The South Korean side of the Joint Security Area is controlled by the United Nations Command because it was the United Nations — represented by the U.S. — that

Did a test site collapse? Research by Chinese geologists suggests that the mountain above North Korea’s main nuclear test site has likely collapsed, rendering it unsafe for further testing and requiring that it be monitored for any leaking radiation. The findings may shed new light on North Korean President Kim Jong Un’s announcement that his country was ceasing its testing program. (AP)

signed the 1953 armistice deal that ended the Korean War. That means Gen. Vincent Brooks, commander of both U.S. Forces in Korea and the U.N. Command, is therefore

Any special arrangements? “Rather than using a public restroom, the leader of North Korea has a personal toilet that follows him around when he travels,” said Lee Yun-keol, who worked in a North Korean Guard Command unit before coming to South Korea in 2005. “The leader’s excretions contain information about his health status so they can’t be left behind,” Lee said. Another consideration: Kim Jong Un is a heavy smoker. Will he light up in the conference room? Or will the South Korean government create a special smoking place for him? All of this information will be useful for the U.S. as it prepares for President Trump’s own summit with Kim, expected to be held in late May or early June. ANNA FIFIELD (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Scientists clock a 32-minute penguin dive

The physiology of emperor penguins suggests they should be able to stay under water for around 8 minutes. But researchers who studied the penguins’ diving and travel patterns found they can dive longer than previously thought, according to a study published this month in the Journal of Marine Ecology Progress Series. The longest dive researchers recorded was 32.2 minutes — 5 minutes longer than the previous record, The Guardian reports. (EXPRESS)

Senate committee advances bipartisan legislation to safeguard special counsel

Parents sue North Korea over son’s death COURTS Fred and Cindy Warmbier, the parents of U.S. college student Otto Warmbier, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against North Korea on Thursday, saying its government tortured and killed their 22-year-old son. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. Otto Warmbier, who was a student at University of Virginia, was arrested by North Korean authorities in January 2016 for stealing a propaganda poster. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor and died in June 2017, days after he was repatriated to the U.S. in a coma. The 22-page complaint says that when Warmbier returned, his parents “were stunned to see his condition. Otto was blind and deaf. He had a shaved head, a feeding tube coming out of his nose, was jerking violently and howling.” His teeth were misaligned and he had an unexplained wound on his foot. The lawsuit comes at a delicate time in relations between Washington and Pyongyang. President Trump is planning an unprecedented summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and the leaders of North and South Korea are meeting today. “Otto was taken hostage, kept as a prisoner for political purposes, used as a pawn and singled out for exceptionally harsh and brutal treatment by Kim Jong Un,” Fred Warmbier said. How JUULisisadvancing advancing comprehensive comprehensive youth prevention. How JUUL youth prevention At JUUL our mission is simple: eliminate cigarette smoking throughout the world one smoker at a time. 38 million Americans and one billion people around the world still smoke. Smoking remains the world’s number one source of preventable death. We at JUUL have an innovative approach to smoker switching that can make a real impact. Our simple and convenient system incorporates temperature regulation to heat nicotine liquid and deliver smokers the satisfaction that they want without the combustion and the harm associated with it. From day one, our co-founders (both former smokers) have stressed the need for empathy, respect and optimism to smokers and their families. We want to disrupt the trillion-dollar global tobacco market and have a meaningful, positive impact on public health worldwide. We think that is within our reach. After years of technology development, in 2015 we introduced JUUL. More than one million adult smokers have already made the switch to JUUL, proof that our approach shows great promise. But we also face some major challenges and complications, including the fact that our product has become popular among teens.

Let me be clear: we do not want teens or any other non-smokers to ever use our product. I’m not only a JUUL employee, but more importantly I am a parent of teenagers. I never want my 18-year-old-son or 15-year-old daughter to try JUUL. The product was designed with adult smokers in mind and their need to break the grip of cigarette dependency.

John Wall said the Wizards are “very confident” despite facing potential elimination at home.

FRANK GUNN (THE CANADIAN PRESS VIA AP)

IN GAME 6 FRIDAY

JERRY BREWER | THE WASHINGTON POST

Cozy on the edge: Wizards embrace perils of Game 6 Rather than mope, the Wizards tried to throw away a Game 5 loss in Toronto as fast as they could. They know the routine too well: Keep the series knotted through four games, lose Game 5 on the road, and prepare in earnest for life without any more mulligans. In all three of their recent playoff runs, John Wall and Bradley Beal carried the team home for a Game 6 facing elimination in the second round. They were knocked out twice and forced a Game 7 on the road once. This year, it’s happening in the first round. In 2014, the Pacers took a 3-1 series lead, and the Wizards won Game 5 on the road before being knocked out at home. In 2015 and 2017, it was the

current dire scenario — lose Game 5 with the series tied, then walk the plank. If the Wizards can’t rally from a 3-2 deficit to Toronto, it will mark the shortest playoff appearance of the Wall-Beal era. As the Wizards prepare to face the end again in Game 6 on Friday night (7, NBCSWA), the pressure of finality feels eerily natural to this team. Some teams live on the edge. The Wizards have built a whole subdivision there. They’ve yet to escape this predicament and come back to win a series, but they’re confident anyway. “I don’t think being down 3-2 going back home is anything psychologically draining,” forward Kelly Oubre Jr. said. The previous two times the Wizards hosted a playoff game when they were down 3-2 to a higher seed, it set the stage for

classic games. Last year, they beat the Celtics on a John Wall 3-pointer. Then they lost Game 7 in Boston. In 2015, Atlanta won Game 6 after officials decided an incredible, potentially gametying 3 from Paul Pierce was released after the buzzer. Still, Washington is acting unburdened. “We love our chances,” Wall said. “We’re very confident.” The Wizards have reason to be. They’re a scary, top-heavy team capable of exploding at any time. Toronto’s best blow isn’t as potent. But because the Raptors are so deep, they can outlast Washington. That’s how the Raptors won Wednesday in Game 5, which was the best battle of the series until Toronto pulled away to win 108-98 despite being down five with less than nine minutes left . Coach Scott Brooks must utilize Wall and Beal flawlessly to keep them from running out of gas. He failed in Game 5. Wall played 44 minutes, including the whole second half. Beal played 36 minutes and fatigued as the game wore on. The Wizards need more than confidence in Game 6. They need some unexpected bench players to step up — perhaps

LeBron James put the Cavs (3-2) in position to clinch with 44 points — including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer — in a 98-95 win Wednesday. James’ block of Victor Oladipo set up the gamewinner but should have been called goaltending, the NBA said Thursday. Oladipo must bounce back for the Pacers to force Game 7. His scoring has decreased in each game, falling from 32 points in Game 1 to 12 on Wednesday.

And they can’t go 5 of 26 from 3-point range while Toronto makes 11 of 25 attempts. “We know we can shoot, so our confidence isn’t wavering,” Oubre said. “... We’ll be ready.” Ready for what? To win? Nats veteran likes how rookie skipper Martinez has handled 11-14 start MLB Ryan Zimmerman stood in the visitors’ clubhouse Wednesday morning in San Francisco and offered a message for any cynics. “There’s no need to push the panic button. It’s April 25th,” he said. Then the Nationals thrashed the Giants 15-2, halting

a four-game skid and moving to 11-14 on a day the veteran sat out. Zimmerman, 33, is the longesttenured player with the franchise. He’s seen it all since he arrived in 2005 as a September call-up: The last-place finishes. The breakthrough. The NLDS losses. And, of course, the disastrous 2015 season, the team’s last without a playoff berth. Like this year, the 2015 team started 10-14 with a slew of injuries. Pitchers frequently avoided

Now the job belongs to Dave Martinez, who has endured a trying initiation as a rookie skipper. He’s without three All-Starcaliber players in Daniel Murphy (knee), Anthony Rendon (toe) and

Adam Eaton (ankle). He didn’t have Ryan Madson, one of his three best relievers, available for close to a week because of overuse. And after Monday night’s loss, starter Gio Gonzalez not-sosubtly criticized Martinez’s decision for pulling him in the sixth. The skipper has plowed through with unrelenting optimism. He was at Gonzalez’s locker Tuesday to discuss the early hook, and Gonzalez called his manager’s willingness to talk “beautiful.” “I’ve been impressed with how he’s stayed exactly the same,” said Zimmerman, who has played for all seven managers in team history. “For me, that’s important.” JORGE CASTILLO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

If it’s purchased, Wembley Stadium would still host England’s soccer team.

Jags owner makes offer on Wembley Khan says $840M bid isn’t a threat to team’s home in Jacksonville NFL Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan has made an offer to buy Wembley Stadium from the English Football Association, perhaps increasing the prospect of an NFL franchise in London. Wembley has staged regularseason NFL games since 2007. The Jaguars started playing there in 2013 — the year Khan bought London soccer club Fulham. Khan offered $840 million for the national soccer stadium, which would continue to host the English team’s games. Wembley was first opened in 1923 and rebuilt before reopening in 2007. The Jaguars have a

deal through 2020 to play games in London. “The games the Jaguars play at Wembley are essential to the financial stability of the Jaguars in Jacksonville, which is one of the smallest markets in the NFL,” Khan said. “If my ownership interests were to include Wembley Stadium, it would protect the Jaguars’ position in London. ... And the stronger the Jaguars are in London, the more stable and promising the Jaguars’ future will be in Jacksonville.” Khan said a takeover of Wembley would “have no impact on Craven Cottage,” Fulham’s home field. NFL games will also be played later this year at the new north London stadium of Premier League club Tottenham, which is under construction. ROB HARRIS (AP)

The attorney for the ex-girlfriend of Reuben Foster said Wednesday that her client lied to authorities when she accused the 49ers linebacker of hitting her. The lawyer for Elissa Ennis made a statement on her behalf that said Foster “did not strike her, injure her or threaten her,” and the injuries in February that led to domestic violence charges were the result of a fight with another woman. The statement said Foster tried to break up with Ennis after he learned of the fight. “She was extremely upset and told him if he broke up with her she would ‘trash his career,’ ” the statement said. San Francisco general manger John Lynch said this week that he’d cut Foster, a first-round pick last year, if it was determined he’d hit a woman. (AP) MLB

Boston OKs changing Yawkey Way to old name Boston on Thursday approved a plan to change the name of Yawkey Way, a street outside Fenway Park that honors a former Red Sox owner some have said was racist. The city unanimously approved the team’s proposal to call the road Jersey Street, its original name before being changed in 1977 to honor Tom Yawkey a year after he died. The team filed a petition in February to change the name so that Fenway would be “inclusive and welcoming to all.” Under Yawkey, the Red Sox became the last team to integrate a black player in 1959, 12 years after Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier. You can also gift a membership to your favorite wine enthusiast.

MARVEL STUDIOS

Ten years after “Iron Man,” everyone’s coming together for “Infinity War.”

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

United we stand: Our loved ones go off to ‘War’ It all started in 2008 with a film about a genius billionaire playboy philanthropist. We’ve been through the good (“Doctor Strange”), the bad (“Thor: The Dark World”), the great (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”) and the sublime (“Black Panther”). After 18 movies about the Avengers or Avengers-to-be, we’ve arrived at “Avengers: Infinity War,” a film that contains some number of those characters that I’m not going to say because that would be saying too much. Plots have varied, but the one consistent thing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies has been the characters (well, that and my deep,

abiding distaste for Pepper Potts). Gods and assassins, men of science and women of combat — the only thing that linked them was the desire to do something right and to right something wrong. Now they get to do it together. The plot of “Infinity War” is easy enough to discuss without spoilers: There is a bad guy, Thanos. He wants to do a bad thing to the universe using the Infinity Stones, which give him powers and stuff. Coming in at a long but necessary 2 hours and 36 minutes — so pee first and lay off the Coke — “Infinity War” is primarily about getting the gang together. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo, the team behind “Winter Soldier” and “Captain America: Civil War,” have largely managed to do it

well. They’ve teamed up the right characters so the disparate tones of their solo movies start to seep into one another. The Russo brothers have a heavy burden to contend with: a crazy number of characters and an almost-as-crazy number of storylines. They carry the unwieldy tangle relatively well; “Infinity War” is nicely paced, with some well-placed gasps and the best surprise entrances of any Avengers movie so far. Still, there is a lot going on, plotwise, so they took the best approach possible: They rely on their characters. The directors took a story largely unrelatable on a personal level — few of us have fought a giant purple guy — and framed it through the eyes of largely relatable people,

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (PG-13, 156 min.) DIRECTORS: Anthony and Joe Russo STARS: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo IN A NUTSHELL: The Avengers and their allies must defeat the powerful Thanos before he can bring an end to the universe (and movie franchises).

“Saturday Night Live’s” Michael Che, Colin Jost to co-host Emmys Sept. 17

most of whom we already knew. It’s less a story about what, and more of a story about who. And who is almost always better. The best moments are the small, character-focused ones. What other movie could make me feel so proud of a kid from Queens, so humbled by a Norse god, and so inspired by a video-game-obsessed teenage tree … thing. Add in the fact that rumors of a major death or deaths have been swirling for at least a year and I was basically worried about everyone the entire time. We’ve been through so much, these characters and their audiences. We might like them at different levels — we might not like them at all, PEPPER — but we’ve stuck together. We’ve lived a lifetime through good and bad, laughs and grief. And though we’re not finished, “Infinity War” feels like we’ve reached some kind of ending. Above all, it’s given audiences a chance to look over a landscape populated with every kind of person we can imagine and realize that somehow we’ve become family. Paramount announces “A Quiet Place” sequel

This small British film with a cast of mostly nobodies — made somewhat grander by the appearance of Martin Freeman — turns into something difficult to describe. It’s a horror movie, all right, but the nature of the fright is less supernatural, and more solid. Co-directors Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson take the story to a place that is fresh, if flawed in its execution. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘After Auschwitz’ Unrated, 83 min.

A follow-up to the 2007 documentary “Swimming in Auschwitz,” this film picks up the stories of the survivors just as they’re being liberated from the death camp Auschwitz after World War II. “Go home,” they were told. But where do go after such an experience? That informs the trajectory of the film and haunts the interviews, conducted over a period of many years. M.O.

Marvel’s ‘grand experiment’ ‘Avengers’ franchise is Hollywood’s envy after 10 years of storytelling

“[Marvel’s] approach doesn’t seem nearly as cynical as when you see another studio trying to do it with, say, ‘Ghostbusters’ or DC [Comics],” says Ben Fritz, who delves into Marvel’s history in the book “The Big Picture: The Fight for the Future of Movies.” “Marvel did it first and Marvel has still done it best.” “Sequel fatigue” doesn’t even seem to apply to Marvel films anymore. “I think you can look at Marvel as a grand narrative experiment,” says “Infinity War” co-director Joe Russo. “Never before in films have we seen this many franchises combined over this many years into one giant mosaic.”

Audiences won’t have to wait too long for another Avengers adventure, either: The fourth film is set for a May 2019 release. After a decade, Marvel’s Feige has retained a fanboy’s verve — while changing the very fabric of the entertainment industry along the way. “It goes back to the movies I loved growing up,” Feige says. “I never found myself being cynical or dismissive of sequels. If they were bad, I was disappointed. But I always loved the promise of seeing the further storylines or further adventures of characters I’d grown to love. That’s all we’re doing.”

MARVEL/DISNEY STUDIOS

FILM Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige talks about his job like a fan who’s just lucky to be there. To hear his enthusiasm about the movies, the actors, the audience and the stories almost belies the fact that he is the architect behind Hollywood’s most valuable brand that has, in just over 10 years, netted more than $14.8 billion in worldwide grosses and become the envy of every studio executive in town. Ten years ago, many moviegoers didn’t know who Iron Man was, and those who did thought of him as a minor comic book character. Now, Marvel Studios has released its 19th film, “Avengers: Infinity War,” an epic mashup of characters once considered to be part of the superhero B-list. The scope of the Marvel effect is difficult to pin down, especially with a force as formidable as Disney behind it. Every few months the studio seems to be breaking new ground, whether it’s as small as a change in tone, like “Thor: Ragnarok,” or as big as producing a downright cultural phenomenon, such as “Black Panther,” now the third highest-grossing domestic film of all time. “We have very lofty aspirations at Marvel Studios,” Feige says. “For those dreams to be surpassed is saying something.”

Eight of the heroes in “Avengers: Infinity War” have had their own movie — nine if you count those scoundrels from “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Here are three supporting characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who deserve a film of their own. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

Loki

Look out, ‘Star Wars’ “Avengers: Infinity War” set box office records in a number of international markets Wednesday, earning $39 million worldwide. Box office analysts say the film, which opened Thursday night in the U.S., could contend for the top domestic opening weekend of all time. That record now belongs to “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which opened at $248 million in 2015. (EXPRESS)

This idea of an interconnected, ever-expanding universe of characters and films is something many have since tried to copy — to varying degrees of success.

A Loki movie wouldn’t even need a plot — it could be a series of vignettes where the morally ambiguous brother of Thor just hops from dimension to dimension playing practical jokes and charming his way out trouble. And, of course, trying to take over the universe. He tries that a lot.

Bucky Like his best friend Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes was cryogenically frozen; unfortunately for him, he was iced by bad guys, which eventually led to his brainwashing and becoming the Winter Soldier. Let’s see what happened in those probablynot-happy torture days.

‘Venom’

‘Crazy Rich Asians’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Oct. 5

EXPECTED RELEASE: Aug. 17

SUMMARY: It was a dark and stormy night when some dark and stormy people picked up a dark and stormy goo. Tom Hardy is a reporter who gets blended with/possessed by the goo, because that’s a story that’ll win a Pulitzer. Then the goo inside him punches people a lot, which might hurt his chances with the committee. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: “Fresh Off the Boat” mom and comedy genius Constance Wu stars in a rom-com about crazy rich Asians (some of whom might be crazy AND rich). She goes to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s very, very, very wealthy family. There’s no telling what the film’s costume budget was, but it was clearly very, very, very a lot. K.P.K.

“Kanye West lost all credibility for me. ... It’s not even the Trump thing. It’s watching someone completely forget where they came from.”

Cheryl comes to work every day with a smile on her face. With her bubbly personality and cheerful spirit, she really brightens up the station and riders look forward to seeing her. Way to go, Cheryl!

@OFFICIALSHAHEM, tweeting disappointment over the rapper’s tweet blitz Wednesday that expressed support for President Trump, calling him a “brother” who shares West’s “dragon energy.” Many fans — especially members of minority groups — felt betrayed, as Trump’s policies are seen as divisive. Amid the backlash, singer John Legend texted West to suggest he “reconsider” his statements. West tweeted out those texts, claiming Legend was manipulating his “free thought.”

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You can

thrill someone else and give yourself what you need and want at the same time. This may be the beginning of a new, lasting arrangement.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

You’re feeling a little lost at this time, but a friend gets you back on the right track. A fresh start has you looking forward to many things.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. Monae said she previously identified as bisexual, but said the label pansexual appeals to her as well. “I’m open to learning more about who I am,” she said. Monae also declined to discuss the nature of her relationship with her frequent collaborator, actress Tessa Thompson, whom she has long been rumored to be dating. (EXPRESS)
