Police in Michigan are appealing to people to surrender their instant riches after a box with $30,000 fell off the back of a truck. Authorities in Grand Haven say drivers stopped Thursday to pick up cash for themselves. Only $2,500 was immediately recovered and returned to the owner, who had forgotten that a cash box was on the truck’s bumper. Two teens later turned in $630, and a woman gave up nearly $3,900. (AP)

Police in Gillette, Wyo., say a man who allegedly shoplifted at the same store twice in one day also asked to fill out a job application during one of his visits. The 36-year-old man went to the Sportsman’s Warehouse and bought items with a rewards card but allegedly swiped sunglasses and ammo. Police say he returned later, asked to fill out an application and left with two more pairs of sunglasses, allegedly without paying for them. (AP)

page three Trash art teaches an ugly truth MONTGOMERY COUNTY The landscape in the Washington region is teeming with green as the spring season settles in — prime time for Brookside Gardens to attract visitors to its lush, immaculately groomed gardens, lawn and ponds. But in recent days, parts of the Wheaton, Md., public garden have looked a bit like a trash dump. And it’s all in the name of art. Kei ra H a r t- Mendoz a , a 38-year-old artist from Bethesda, said she wanted to create an environmental art exhibit to showcase how much trash people create and its impact on nature. She said she hopes people will see the exhibit and think about how to reduce their waste. The main exhibit, called “The Legacy Project — Our Lives of Consumption and Waste,” contains more than 1,700 pieces of plastic scattered in a pond at the park’s Perennial Garden. Along a wall around the garden, another exhibit with hundreds of water bottles screwed onto posts is called “Plastic, Plastic Everywhere, 999,000

Bottles of Plastic on the Wall.” Brookside Gardens director Stephanie Oberle and Hart-Mendoza said their goal is to send a message to the public to consider how changing daily habits can help to reduce trash. H a r t- Mendoz a s a id she thought of the idea two years ago, when she realized how much trash her own family of four discarded. Then she started saving her family’s trash. Within six months, she accumulated plastic bottles,

newspapers, cardboard boxes, milk jugs, aluminum cans, shipping materials and tin cans. After discussions with Brookside Gardens and the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County, they agreed to display her trash collection at Brookside. “The idea behind it is that it’s dramatic,” Oberle said. “You walk through the gardens and you see all these bottles on the water, and the juxtaposition of this beautiful garden with all this trash promotes a conversation of how our waste is having a negative impact on the environment.” Since the exhibit began earlier this month, Oberle said Brookside Gardens has received negative feedback from two visitors unhappy with the trash, who “thought it looked junky.” Oberle’s response: Trash is being dumped all over the world. “Doesn’t that make you unhappy?” She said visitors shouldn’t fret too much, as the exhibit ends Tuesday. The trash will be dismantled and recycled. “This is going to be taken away and Brookside will be back to normal,” she said. “But when you think about trash in the Pacific Ocean, that’s not going away.” DANA HEDGPETH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Rare Guam kingfisher hatches in Va. The Smithsonian National Zoo announced Friday that a rare Guam kingfisher had hatched on April 22 at the zoo’s Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Va. The species is extinct in the wild, and according to the Smithsonian, only about 140 kingfishers exist in human care. The birds are notoriously difficult to breed, and this breeding pair abandoned their egg, so staff stepped in. The chick weighed less than a half-ounce at birth. Born without feathers, it is expected to grow bright blue, orange and white plumage in time. (TWP)

Democratic Dels. Maggie McIntosh, left, and Dereck E. Davis are running for Maryland’s Speaker of the House.

be the first openly gay person to hold the powerful position. There have been threats, as outside groups, including unions, black pastors and social advocacy organizations, have vowed political retaliation for Democrats depending on who they support. Ahead of a vote scheduled for Wednesday, questions of race, gender and ideology took center stage, with a third candidate, Adrienne Jones of Baltimore County, who is black, dropping out to support Davis. Other powerful Democrats spoke openly and bitterly about whether the need to recognize the historic role of African Americans in the Democratic electorate outweighed the importance of uniting behind the party’s liberal agenda. “Many of the [Legislative Black] Caucus feel bullied into voting for a black candidate,” said one African American lawmaker,

MARYLAND POLITICS The drama over who should lead the lower chamber of the Maryland legislature is so full of tension and suspense that one delegate likened it to the popular fantasy epic playing on HBO. “It’s ‘Game of Thrones,’ Annapolis-style,” said Del. C.T. Wilson, D-Charles, reflecting on the ugliness of the race to succeed longtime House Speaker Michael Busch, who died earlier this month. Democrats — who hold more than two-thirds of the seats in the House of Delegates — weigh whether to elect the first black speaker, Dereck Davis of Prince George’s County; or the first woman, Maggie McIntosh of Baltimore City, who would also

who spoke on the condition of anonymity to be candid about the intra-party tensions. “It’s been very, very divisive.” McIntosh, who is white, has pledges of support from 60 of the 98 Democrats in the House, according to several people familiar with the vote-counting, including the party’s most leftleaning flank and more than a third of the 45-member Black Caucus. But Davis, who is more of a centrist, also has strong support among black lawmakers and is trying to build on that base, buoyed by calls from African American pastors and others to rally behind a black candidate. Even though Maryland is onethird African American, a black person has never held any of the state’s top-tier positions, except lieutenant governor. “This is a critical moment in the state of Maryland, and our

No. 1 objective is to make sure the next Speaker of the House is one of our members,” said Del. Darryl Barnes, D-Prince George’s, chairman of the Legislative Black Caucus. “We want to make sure we’re on the right side of history.” While in the past, the Democratic caucus has voted on the House floor for whichever candidate wins a majority of Democratic support in a private vote, Davis and his supporters have refused to say whether they will support McIntosh during Wednesday’s special legislative session. That opens the door for Davis to win the speakership with a share of the Democratic vote and support from the 42 Republicans in the House, who say they will vote as a bloc — but have not settled on a candidate. PARDON, WHERE IS THE PRESIDENT?

Stolen Obama bust returned

Earlier this month, a Virginia man recovered a 2-foot-tall, 50-pound bust of former President Obama. It had gone missing from Howard Hankins’ farm in Croaker, Va., where Hankins keeps the remains of Presidents Park, the defunct open-air museum near Williamsburg, where visitors once walked among the presidential heads. After a public appeal for the return of the bust, a mysterious caller offered to make arrangements to return Obama. “It is amazing that somebody actually did return him,” Hankins said. (AP)

Four people stabbed after a dispute at a restaurant in Burtonsville, Md.

Authorities say five men have been rescued from a cave in southwest Virginia where they became trapped after heavy rains. Officials say six men entered Cyclops Cave near Cleveland, Va., and had planned to camp overnight Saturday until conditions worsened. The rains also made it difficult for them to get out. One man in the group managed to get out early Sunday and alerted authorities. All five men were taken to hospitals after being pulled from the cave. Officials said they were suffering from hypothermia and exhaustion. (AP) VIRGINIA

‘Pill mill’ doctor sentenced to 7 years A doctor with a history of misconduct who lost his medical license three times was sentenced to seven years in prison Friday for running a clinic that prescribed opioids with little evaluation or oversight. Shriharsh Pole, 65, pleaded guilty in federal court in Alexandria last year to a drug distribution conspiracy. Over a four-year investigation, the clinic distributed 600,000 oxycodone pills. Customers at the clinic could simply show up with cash to get opioids, prosecutors said. (TWP) THE DISTRICT

The discovery was made on the banks of the Potomac River, near Chain Bridge, in upper Northwest Washington, about 25 feet from the shore. Police said the body appeared to be that of a man. No identification has been made, and no cause of death was released. It was unclear how long the body had been there. (TWP)

White nationalists disrupt D.C. event Group interrupted an author’s book talk at Politics and Prose THE DISTRICT A handful of self-proclaimed white nationalists interrupted an appearance by an author at the Politics and Prose bookstore in Northwest Washington on Saturday afternoon, chanted, “This land is our land” and then exited to a chorus of loud boos. The men walked in as author Jonathan M. Metzl, a psychiatrist and director of the Center for Medicine, Health and Society at Vanderbilt University, was discussing his new book, “Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment is Killing America’s Heartland.” Metzl’s book explores how some lower- and middle-class white Americans are drawn to politicians who promise to improve their lives but who promote policies that place white Americans at greater risk of illness and death. About 10 white male protesters walked into Politics and Prose shortly after Metzl began his talk at 3:30 p.m., videos posted on Twitter show. They gathered in front of Metzl, and an unidentified man with a megaphone declared, “You would have the white working class trade their

No one was hurt, and no damage was done to the store, said co-owner Bradley Graham. “The audience was not particularly receptive,” Graham said. “We just let them have their say, expecting they would leave, and they did.” Metzl said, “It was pretty intense. ENVIRONMENT The Environmental Protection Agency published a 150-page document this past week with a straightforward message for coping with the fallout from natural disasters across the country: Start planning for the fact that climate change is going to make these catastrophes worse. The language, included in guidance on how to address the debris left in the wake of floods, hurricanes and wildfires, is at odds with the rhetoric of the EPA’s own leader, Andrew Wheeler. Just last month, Wheeler said in a CBS interview that “most of the threats from climate change are 50 to 75 years out.” Multiple recent studies have shown how climate change is already affecting the U.S. and the globe. One recent scientific paper, co-authored by EPA researchers, found that unless the U.S. slashes carbon emissions, climate change will probably cost the country hundreds of billions

of dollars annually by 2100. The divergence between Wheeler and his own agency offers the latest example of the often contradictory way that federal climate policy has evolved under President Trump. As the White House has sought to minimize or ignore climate science, government experts have

continued to sound the alarm. The White House has repeatedly sought ways to question the broad scientific consensus that human activities are driving climate change, and it is considering creating a federal advisory panel to re-examine those findings. But while the National Security Council is still

pursuing the task force proposal, it has encountered resistance from military and intelligence officials, as well as the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. In the case of the last week’s guidance from the EPA, documents show, the White House’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs sought to downplay climate change’s impact on the intensity of natural disasters. But these efforts did not entirely remove those references. While the White House struck one phrase attributing extreme weather events to climate change, the document still refers to “climate change” and “a changing climate” 22 times. “This EPA guidance is clearly telling the public you need to start dealing now with disasters that are being made worse by climate change and will be made even worse due to climate change,” said Amit Narang, regulatory policy advocate at the group Public Citizen. “It’s pretty troubling to me to see the head of EPA saying the exact opposite thing.” JULIET EILPERIN AND BRADY DENNIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Crane falls on busy street during storm, killing four A construction crane fell from a building on Google’s new Seattle campus during a storm that brought wind gusts, crashing down onto one of the city’s busiest streets and killing four people. One woman and three men had died by the time firefighters had arrived Saturday afternoon, Fire Chief Harold Scoggins said. Two of the dead were ironworkers who had been inside the crane, while the other two were people who were inside cars, Fire Department spokesman Lance Garland said. A 25-year-old mother and her 4-month-old daughter were in a car that was smashed by the crane on its passenger side, and both managed to escape with only minor injuries, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said, calling it a miracle. Calls to action

Threat of ‘fake news’

No celebrities

Ron Chernow, left, made a few digs at Trump during his keynote address and was actually relatively funny … at least for an acclaimed historian. “I applaud any president who aspires to the Nobel Prize for peace,” he said, “but we don’t want one in the running for the Nobel Prize for fiction.”

Chernow employed presidential anecdotes to inspire journalists to stay committed to their trade in the face of adversity. He referred to the news media as a “cornerstone of democracy,” and referenced James Madison’s great support of the free press as proof of how essential it is.

During a speech that highlighted journalists who have been targeted, WHCA President Oliver Knox said he personally receives death threats, and his son once worried President Trump would put him in prison. “ ‘Fake news’ and ‘enemies of the people’ are not pet names, punchlines or presidential,” he said.

Trump didn’t attend and neither did the hordes of celebrities who used to appear as cameras surveyed the dinner. Their presence has dwindled since Trump took office. Instead, celebrities went to comedian Samantha Bee’s “Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner” on Friday night.

‘I’m just so heartbroken’ Rabbi and congregation reel after shooting that killed 1 and injured 3 at synagogue in California

SANDY HUFFAKER (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

POWAY, CALIF. On the final day of Passover, six months to the day after a shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue left 11 dead, a white man bearing an assault weapon and anti-Semitic views stormed the Chabad of Poway near San Diego and started shooting. The gunman, identified by police as 19-year-old John Earnest, shot the rabbi, two Israelis from the same family and a 60-year-old woman named Lori Gilbert Kaye — a beloved, dedicated member of the congregation since its inception more than 30 years ago. The rabbi and the Israeli nationals survived their injuries. Kaye did not. Kaye leaves behind her husband and a 22-year-old daughter, friends said after the shooting. “She has been a steadfast member, supporter, philanthropist, just a kind soul,” Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein told “Sunday Today,” after emerging from surgery on his wounded hands. “Everyone in the community knew her. She was the type of person, the first one to be everywhere.” Goldstein founded the Poway synagogue in 1986, building the now-expansive campus from the ground up. Kaye was the one who helped the rabbi secure the construction loan, he told “Today.” “She is such a dear friend,” Goldstein said. “I’ve known her for 33 years, and I’m just so heartbroken … by this senseless killing.” Roneet Lev, another member of the congregation and a longtime friend of Kaye, told CNN that Kaye had been attending services Saturday to say a Kaddish prayer for her mother, who

died last fall. “She didn’t die a senseless death,” Lev told CNN. “She died advertising the problem we have with anti-Semitism and to bring good to this world. … If God put an angel on this planet, it would have been Lori.” In a Facebook post later published in the Jewish Journal, Audrey Jacobs wrote that Kaye was “a jewel of our community, a true Eshet Chayil, a Woman of Valor.” Goldstein told “Today” that he walked into the banquet hall at his synagogue late Saturday morning and heard a loud bang. “I turned around and I was face to face with this murderer terrorist who was holding the rifle and looking straight at me,” Goldstein said. “As soon as he saw me, he started to shoot toward me and that’s when I put my hands up.” There was a group of children in the banquet hall, including his granddaughter, so the rabbi said he ran — not realizing his fingers

Investigation begins John T. Earnest, 19, surrendered to police after bursting into a California synagogue and opening fire. Earnest, who had no previous contact with law enforcement, may be charged with a hate crime in addition to homicide when he’s arraigned later this week, San Diego County Sheriff William Gore said. Police searched Earnest’s house and said he was also being investigated in connection with an arson attack on a mosque in Escondido, Calif., on March 24. (AP)

Peretz, who still lives in Israel, told the local TV station Channel 12 that dodging rocket fire has become instinctual — and that those instincts helped him flee the bullets on Saturday morning. Peretz said the gunman hit him in the leg. One of Peretz’s nieces, 9-year-old Noya Dahan, was injured in the face and leg by shrapnel and received treatment at a hospital, her father told CNN. INDIANAPOLIS Oliver North announced Saturday that he would not serve a second term as National Rifle Association president, making it clear he had been forced out after his own failed attempt to remove the NRA’s longtime CEO in a burgeoning divide over the group’s finances and media operations. Hundreds of the NRA’s estimated 5 million members packed into the convention center in Indianapolis where the group’s annual meetings were being held. North, above, whose one-year term ends today, did not show up, and his spot on the stage was left empty. His statement, which was read for him, was largely met with silence. Wayne LaPierre, whom North had tried to push out, later received two standing ovations. It was a stunning conclusion to a battle between two conservative and Second Amendment titans — North, the retired Marine lieutenant colonel with a ramrod demeanor who was at the center of the IranContra scandal of the 1980s, and LaPierre, who has been battletested in the decades since he took up the mantle of gun rights. In this latest challenge, LaPierre pushed back against North, telling members of the NRA’s board of directors that North had threatened to release “damaging” information about him to them and saying it amounted to an “extortion” attempt. Suspect caught after police discover five bodies

Spain’s governing center-left Socialists won the country’s election Sunday but must seek backing from smaller parties to maintain power, while a far-right party rode an unprecedented surge of support to enter the lower house of parliament for the first time in four decades. With 99 percent of ballots counted, the Socialists led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez won 29 percent of the vote, capturing 123 seats in the 350-seat Congress of Deputies. The new far-right Vox party made its national breakthrough by capturing 10 percent of the vote, which would give it 24 seats. The conservative Popular Party fell to 66 seats. (AP)

Former Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar, a foreign policy sage known for leading efforts to help former Soviet Lugar states dismantle and secure much of their nuclear arsenal, died Sunday. He was 87. Lugar died at a Northern Virginia hospital from complications related to a rare neurological disorder, the Lugar Center in Washington said in a statement. Lugar, a Republican, served six terms in the Senate, and sought the GOP presidential nomination in 1996. He also twice served as Indianapolis’ mayor. (AP)

An officer in rural Tennessee shot the suspect in the investigation into the discovery of five bodies in two homes, capping an hours-long manhunt Saturday. A Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokesman said Michael Cummins, 25, was taken into custody about a mile from one of the Sumner County crime scenes. Cummins was being treated at a hospital for what were believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. Police said officers responding to a 911 made the original discovery of four bodies and an injured person at one home. A fifth body was found in another home. (AP)

Cyprus serial killer case widens with body in lake

Military officer has confessed to killing 5 women and 2 girls

PETROS KARADJIAS (AP)

MITSERO, CYPRUS Cypriot investigators hunting for victims of a suspected serial killer retrieved a suitcase containing the decomposing remains of a woman from the bottom of a man-made lake Sunday. The body is believed to be that of one of the victims of a Cypriot military officer who has confessed to killing seven foreign women and girls. Senior Inspector Neophytos Shailos of the Cypriot Criminal Investigation Department said a coroner who examined the body at the scene said it was in an advanced stage of decomposition. He said a battery of tests will be conducted to determine the woman’s identity. Authorities focused their search on a lake about 20 miles west of the capital, Nicosia, after the suspect — a 35-year-old army captain who has not been identified — told investigators he put the bodies of three of his victims into suitcases and threw them into the toxic lake, part of a now-defunct copper pyrite mine. Those victims are believed to be Maricar Valtez Arquiola, 31, from the Philippines; Florentina Bunea, 36, from Romania; and Bunea’s 8-year-old daughter, Elena Natalia. Arquiola has been missing since December 2017,

while the mother and daughter vanished in September 2016. The retrieved suitcase is one of two that were located in the lake Saturday. Shailos said authorities won’t retrieve the second one immediately, but will continue scouring the lake for the third suitcase. The development is the latest in a rapidly unfolding case that has shocked Cypriots, who fear a serial killer has been preying on foreign women who came to work in the eastern Mediterranean island nation. The case came to light with the April 14 discovery of the bound body of 38-year-old Mary Rose Tiburcio, from the Philippines, down

a flooded shaft near the lake. The discovery triggered a homicide investigation that led to the captain’s arrest before a second woman’s body — thought to be that of 28-year-old Arian Palanas Lozano, also from the Philippines — was found in the mineshaft on April 20. Police said the suspect admitted killing them both and they believe he also killed Tiburcio’s 6-year-old daughter, Sierra, who remains missing. The scope of the case expanded when the suspect confessed Thursday to killing a total of five women and two of their daughters. PETROS KARADJIAS AND MENELAOS HADJICOSTIS (AP)

Researchers from the University of California at San Francisco have developed a “neural decoder” that can translate brain activity into simple sentences, according to a paper published in Nature last week. Volunteers who had already had electrodes implanted on the surface of their brains ahead of neurosurgery were asked to read hundreds of sentences out loud while researchers monitored their brain activity. The team used machine learning to generate simulations of vocal tract movements based on the volunteers’ brain signals, and translated them into synthesized speech. The neural decoder could be an important step toward improving the tools available to help those who cannot speak to be heard. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The amount former Vice President Joe Biden said he raised in the 24 hours after he announced his presidential bid, the biggest first-day haul reported among the 20 candidates running to become the Democratic nominee. Biden had been expected to post a big first-day figure, given his national name recognition and a robust list of supporters from his eight years as vice president. Beto O’Rourke of Texas previously held the biggest first-day figure, reportedly at $6.1 million. (THE WASHINGTON POST) 4 German skiers killed in avalanche in Switzerland

Washington used two first-round picks on Dwayne Haskins, from Ohio State, and Montez Sweat, from Miss. State.

Redskins’ newest QB, a Bullis product, says he always knew he’d end up back here NFL DRAFT By the beginning of this past week, Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins knew he was going to end up with the Redskins. The NFL draft was still days away, but the speculation on television and all over the internet meant nothing to him. He already was at peace with his future. “It was just [a matter of] trying to figure out what time and what pick,” Haskins said Saturday afternoon. He was standing on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial, which he had visited many times as a child growing up in New Jersey and later as a high school student at the Bullis School in Potomac. Saturday’s trip was a publicity stunt set up by the Redskins to introduce their new franchise quarterback and his fellow first-round pick, edge rusher Montez Sweat, to Washington. But gazing around on this brilliant spring afternoon, with the Washington Monument towering behind him and a brisk wind whipping whitecaps on the

tidal basin, he didn’t feel any need to be introduced. He was home, he said, in the only place he expected to be through four months of draft speculation. It’s hard to pinpoint the moment when the Redskins decided that Haskins would be the quarterback to lead the franchise into the 2020s. Maybe it came during meetings with team leaders at the NFL scouting combine in early March; Haskins remembers having good talks then. Perhaps it was at Ohio State’s pro day later in March, when Redskins coach Jay Gruden and offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell showed up to watch him throw. It could have been that dinner at D.C. Prime this month during his visit to the Redskins’ team facility in Ashburn; he and Gruden devoured their steaks, and the coach kept cracking jokes. “I clicked well with all the teams I visited. I felt like the team that liked me the most was the Redskins,” he said. “I could just tell by the vibe I got from

all the teams. They loved me a little bit more.” He smiled. “It all made sense,” he said. Haskins said he loved his chats with quarterbacks coach

Tim Rattay. His meetings with Gruden were filled with complicated dialogue about X’s and O’s. Haskins said nobody from the Redskins told him he was going to be their choice, but the decision soon became obvious to him. Gruden said the Redskins had a few quarterbacks in mind because they weren’t sure Haskins would fall to the 15th pick. “You never really make up your mind on one guy,” he said, “because you have a tendency to get your heart broken if that guy gets picked.” Still, the Redskins had a good idea Haskins would be theirs if they were patient. The Giants, whom Haskins had been linked to all winter, had fallen in love with Duke’s Daniel Jones and were certain to use the sixth pick on him. When they did, Haskins was not surprised; his agent had told him it would happen. But Haskins won’t forget the slight. “I’m just looking forward to being able to compete against those guys for the rest of my career.” LES CARPENTER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Savage, above, recorded 52 total tackles last season and his 40 time of 4.36 seconds was second-fastest among safeties at the combine.

Byron Cowart No. 159 overall, Patriots

The defensive lineman from Tampa first attended Auburn, then junior college. In his one year at Maryland, he started every game, recording 38 tackles and two interceptions.

Ty Johnson No. 186 overall, Lions

The running back missed the last three games of his senior season with a calf injury and was still the team’s second-leading rusher with 506 yards.

Derwin Gray No. 219 overall, Steelers

In five years at Maryland, the offensive lineman out of D.C.’s Friendship Collegiate had four head coaches, four position coaches and three offensive coordinators.

‘Next thing you know, I’m here’ NATIONALS Carter Kieboom woke up Thursday morning to a bunch of missed calls from Randy Knorr. Knorr, the manager of the Class AAA Fresno Grizzlies, told Kieboom he had been promoted to the Nationals. That was it. That’s how fast a baseball dream is realized. “Next thing you know, I’m here,” Kieboom said Friday. “So this is real special.” That’s how Kieboom went from the Nationals’ top prospect to their starting shortstop of the very near future. But it still raises a complicated question. Why now? Shortstop Trea Turner broke his right index finger April 2. Washington recalled Adrian Sanchez. General manager Mike Rizzo said the 21-year-old Kieboom had to improve defensively. The initial time frame for Turner’s return was four to eight weeks, Rizzo revealed Friday afternoon, and the Nationals figured they could use Wilmer Difo as a Band-Aid replacement. Then

Nationals shortstop Carter Kieboom has homered in two of his first three big league games.

Kieboom raked in Fresno, hitting .379 with six doubles, three home runs and a .506 on-base percentage in 18 games while Difo struggled as an everyday player. This week, Washington’s calculus changed. “We wanted to get [Kieboom] some AAA at-bats under his belt,” Rizzo said Friday. “With Trea still being weeks away — not months but weeks away — we felt it not only gets one of our

best prospect’s feet wet in the big leagues, get him some experience, it also strengthens a strength of ours in putting Wilmer Difo back into a more comfortable role in being that super utility player that can play multiple positions and help us off the bench.” Calling up Kieboom now instead of three weeks ago could mean one of two things: The Nationals project Turner’s rehab will be on the longer side of four to eight weeks, or they waited on Kieboom to ensure another year of team control, a practice known as service-time manipulation. To get a full year of service time, a player needs to be in the majors for 160 days. Kieboom debuted on the 30th day of the season. If he stays in the majors from here on out, the earliest he could reach free agency is 2026. Now, curious timing or not, he’s in a position to help the Nationals immediately. That could have been true three weeks ago. It was definitely true Friday, when he hit a game-tying home run in the eighth inning against the Padres, and Sunday, when he homered again in a 7-6 victory. JESSE DOUGHERTY (WASHINGTON POST)

In the Eastern Conference semifinals, Kyrie Irving had 26 points and 11 assists, Al Horford added 20 points and 11 rebounds, and the Celtics cruised past the Bucks 12090. LOSERS

Three winners and losers from the weekend There’s plenty to like about an uncharacteristically good Redskins draft. They resisted the urge to move up or trade for Josh Rosen and got the QB they wanted at No. 15 in Dwayne Haskins. And pass rusher Montez Sweat could be a steal at No. 26. Here are three other teams that had stellar drafts — and three that will regret their picks. MARK MASKE (TWP)

Packers

Buffalo got the best bargain on a first-round DT. Ed Oliver fell to them at No. 9. Second-rounder Cody Ford will help the offensive line, and both third-rounders, RB Devin Singletary and TE Dawson Knox, could aid second-year QB Josh Allen.

Jacksonville was more lucky than good. First, pass rusher Josh Allen fell to them at No. 7. Then they traded up to snag OT Jawaan Taylor. If concerns over a knee injury are overblown, taking him in the second round will turn out to be one of the heists of this draft.

John Elway helped his new QB, Joe Flacco, getting TE Noah Fant in the first round and OT Dalton Risner early in the second. QB Drew Lock plummeted 10 picks into the second round before Denver picked him. Will this work better than Elway’s past QB picks?

There’s room to wonder about each of New York’s first-round choices. Was sixth too high to draft QB Daniel Jones? What about DT Dexter Lawrence at No. 17? Was Deandre Baker the right CB at No. 30? It’ll all be fine if Jones delivers as Eli Manning’s successor.

Taking pass rusher Clelin Ferrell fourth and safety Johnathan Abram 27th didn’t maximize the value of those picks. Oakland’s roster is better than it was before the draft but worse than it was before Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper were traded.

Using the 12th pick on pass rusher Rashan Gary was a risk. He’s talented, but never lived up to his promise at Michigan. Trading up to take S Darnell Savage Jr. 21st was puzzling. Few had him rated so highly, and the Packers probably could have gotten him later.

‘The Red Line’ grapples with men in blue TV REVIEW “The Red Line” is a well-intentioned and sometimes beautifully acted CBS miniseries about race and justice that got off to a clunky, heavy-handed start Sunday. The plot is well-marked and the themes are mostly delivered by bullhorn, but let’s walk through it anyhow: An African American doctor, Harrison Brennan (Corey Reynolds), leaves his night shift at a Chicago hospital, stops at a convenience store and gets caught in the middle of an armed robbery. The gunman flees, and Harrison tries to help the frightened, injured store owner. That’s when a white police officer, Paul Evans (Noel Fisher), bursts through the door and — seeing a black man in a hoodie and a bleeding clerk — immediately shoots and kills the unarmed Brennan. Harrison leaves behind a husband, Daniel Calder (Noah Wyle), and the couple’s

The miniseries clumsily explores the fallout of a tragic police shooting

teenage daughter, Jira (Aliyah Royale), whom they adopted as an infant. In her grief, Jira has a renewed fervor to meet her biological mother — on the premise that her white father cannot fully relate to her grief as the black daughter of a black father who was shot by a cop. Jira’s mother’s identity is sealed away in the adoption files, but viewers already know she is Tia Young (Emayatzy Corinealdi), a candidate in a campaign for city alderman, running partly on a platform promise to do more about police shootings. So much drama, which quickly becomes too much drama. “The Red Line’s” list of executive producers notably includes Greg Berlanti (“You,” “Arrow”) and Ava DuVernay (“Queen Sugar,” “Selma”), and their effort, along with that of creators Caitlin Parrish and Erica Weiss, doesn’t lack heart, especially once you get past the first hour and its surplus of talking points. (CBS is airing the series in two-hour chunks each Sunday through May 19.) At times, “The Red Line”

exhibits care and thoughtful structure. At other times, it lapses into some network habits, sacrificing its rawness for a more polished, procedural approach. There are, however, some

knockout performances that make the series worth seeing through to the end — especially from Wyle, who fearlessly weeps, rages and broods, lending particular depth to his character. “The Red Line” stumbles when it travels into Blue Lives Matter territory. The series raises questions about whether Paul is redeemable, given his willingness to grasp at any excuse. The results of this soul-searching get scrambled in the telling. TV has yet to deliver a worthwhile story arc from the point of view of a white cop who has killed an innocent person of color. Despite terrific work from Fisher, “The Red Line” falls short of that goal.

This documentary looks at the system of abuse that plagued the U.S. women’s gymnastics program, resulting in more than 250 accusations of sexual assault against Dr. Larry Nassar.

A win-win: Holzhauer has reinvigorated ‘Jeopardy!’ Answer: He’s broken “Jeopardy!” Question: Who is James Holzhauer? He’s the 34-year-old professional sports gambler who made his “Jeopardy!” debut April 4 and has been the runaway victor in every game since. Last week, he became the second player to break the $1 million prize total.

The media says he’s broken the show with his strategies because, basically, there seems to be no way to beat him. Rather than start with the $200 and $400 clues, he goes after the bigger money to amass a mini-fortune, which lets him wager really big when he hits Daily Doubles. Holzhauer dispassionately puts $10,000 or more at risk. But these strategies would not work if he did not know a

great deal about a great many things — from chemical elements to John Updike novels. In an era when you can look up anything on your phone, Holzhauer reminds us how impressive it is to store random knowledge in your brain. One way he boned up was by reading children’s books, which he recommends because they are “all short” and “there’s pictures everywhere.” Sure, his episodes lack suspense about who will triumph. But he is entertaining in his own right, with a calm yet determined demeanor and a selfdeprecating sense of humor. So is “Jeopardy!” broken? Au contraire: I think the

FRIENDS OF THE NATIONAL ZOO presents

“I strictly think he’s saying that minorities in general should look to invest in their own community to help keep it a minority community.” @BEAZ_INTHE_TRAP, reacting to JAY-Z’s freestyle during Friday’s “B-Sides 2” concert at Webster Hall in New York. In a tribute to slain rapper Nipsey Hussle, who notably gave money to lower-income neighborhoods, JAY-Z rapped, “Gentrify your own hood before these people do it.” The line immediately sparked backlash, as fans noted that gentrification pushes poorer communities out of their neighborhoods to make way for affluent residents. Others argued that gentrification could positively affect struggling communities.

“We have decided to stan CHVRCHES even harder.” @OKAYITSCODY, supporting the band, above, after its members expressed disappointment with artist Marshmello for collaborating with Chris Brown, center, and Tyga, bottom right. CHVRCHES collaborated on the DJ’s April hit “Here With Me,” but said Thursday that they were “confused” by Marshmello’s decision to record “Light It Up” with Brown and Tyga, both of whom have been accused multiple times of assault.

“Does this make anyone else sad? Why would any PR person choose this as a birthday picture?” @JULIEWILCOXWX, questioning the

White House’s decision to share a picture of first lady Melania Trump sitting alone as photographers snapped shots of the president to mark her birthday, which was Friday. The first lady wasn’t smiling in the shot, which led many Twitter users to brand the choice as “sad.”

“Daniel Jones looks like the actor they’d cast to play Eli Manning in a movie about Peyton Manning’s life.” @_BEEZNEEZ, joking about the New York Giants drafting Duke University quarterback Daniel Jones on Thursday in the first round of the NFL draft. Fans felt the Giants wasted their sixth overall pick and joked about how much Jones resembles longtime Giants QB Eli Manning.

TODAY: It will be noticeably cooler to start the workweek, although winds will be lighter. Mostly to partly sunny morning skies will trend cloudier during the afternoon. Skies will remain mostly cloudy overnight as an area of low pressure approaches. That will bring a chance for some light rain showers later in the evening.
