Evidence suggests MIT students aren’t getting enough homework
Man receives very poor return on investment in a life of crime
Pranksters at MIT have struck again, this time inspired by “Avengers: Endgame.” On Saturday night, students draped the university’s Great Dome with a giant cloth version of Captain America’s red, white and blue shield. Their efforts drew a “Very cool!” on Twitter from Massachusetts native Chris Evans, who plays Captain America. MIT students have for generations focused similar pranks, which they call “hacks,” on the dome. (AP)
The theft of a saxophone ended on a sour note for a Virginia man. Authorities say Alex Robert Sheaffer was arrested Friday and charged with stealing a high-end saxophone at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond. Police allege he stole the $5,000 alto sax from a musician who was playing for a reception there. Investigators say Sheaffer, a member of a catering crew, took the saxophone to a pawn shop, where he secured a $300 loan. (AP)

She says she had planned to look out for the competition this year but forgot about it until her teacher announced that their class would be participating in the competition. Ngatchou made it to the national stage by winning her class, grade and school competitions before winning the citywide D.C. battle. The three poems she will be reciting are “The Poem You’ve Been Waiting For” by Tarfia Faizullah; “At Cross Purposes” by Samuel Menashe; and Emily Dickinson’s “ ‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers —.” “I’ve always liked writing, so poetry wasn’t new to me — but reciting poetry [was],” Ngatchou says. “The thing I struggle with is I don’t know if I’m reciting the poem the way the author really intended or my personal interpretation. Which one is more important? I don’t know.” When it’s time to take the stage, Ngatchou says she’ll be trusting her own judgment. “I do what feels right to me.”

VIRGINIA Four Northern Virginia school systems are declaring in court their support for the rights of transgender students, weighing in on a landmark case involving a teenager embroiled in a yearslong legal fight over his attempt to use the boys’ restroom at his high school. The school boards in the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church, and Fairfax and Arlington counties, said last month in court papers they stand behind Gavin Grimm, a transgender teen who sued the school board in Gloucester County, Va., after he was barred from the boys’ restroom. Grimm’s case, which ascended to the Supreme Court and became a touchstone in the fight for transgender student rights, is scheduled for a July trial in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. The case returned to the lower court after the Trump administration abandoned an Obama-era rule on transgender students. The Northern Virginia school systems say in court papers that they think they “must embrace the thousands of students in Virginia public schools who … identify as transgender.” The move is another sign that

school systems in the D.C. region are embracing transgender students, despite forceful opposition from some community members and broader national clashes over rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. In recent years, school boards in Northern Virginia have expanded protections for transgender students and updated curriculums to be more inclusive. Referring to experiences in their own schools, the four systems wrote that allowing transgender students to use the restrooms aligning with their gender identity makes the students feel safer and more accepted, and they rejected fears commonly
cited by those who oppose doing so. “Male students, teachers, and parents have not used the policy as a ruse to improperly access female restrooms. Sex offenders have not exploited the policy to prey on children. Transgender students have not suffered greater stigma or trauma,” the brief states. “Those fears have proved entirely unfounded.” The Northern Virginia school systems’ approaches stand in contrast to a policy adopted by the Gloucester County School Board that required students in the Chesapeake Bay community to use restrooms that align with their “biological genders.” DEBBIE TRUONG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Arrests fell from 3,485 in 2014 to 1,566 in 2018, although African American youths are still disproportionately likely to face charges. The Center for Children’s Law and Policy, a D.C.-based national nonprofit, found 90% of all juveniles arrested in Baltimore are African-American, but only 64% of the city’s youth population is African American. Announcements on Metro’s 7000-series trains are not made by the operators.
DC RIDER | KERY MURAKAMI
Metro’s lost voices: Robo-announcers clear, but lifeless These days, Sharon Adelman is more likely to hear automated announcements than a human voice over the intercom during her daily rides on the Orange Line. Like this one the other day: “You’re on a Green Line train to Greenbelt. The next stop is L’Enfant Plaza.” It was professionally enunciated and crystal-clear; it sounded almost human. Unlike the garbled announcements she used to hear all the time, she could actually make out that “this is a 7000-series train.” But one thing a computergenerated voice can’t do is cut through the monotony of the morning commute with the cheerful “All aboard!” Adelman heard one morning. It was before 8 a.m., she recalled, and no one on her train seemed to be in a laughing mood. But she found herself chuckling, and was glad for it. No doubt many riders view
the automated announcements on the newest 7000-series trains as an improvement. But Adelman, 45, misses hearing operators’ voices now that the new trains make up a majority of Metro’s fleet. It just feels a little less human, she said. Which, of course, it is. Fading from the commute are those occasional bits of humor and empathy for riders sorely in need of both. Granted, few appreciate the human announcement quite as much as Adelman does. Whenever she hears a particularly entertaining or informative one, she makes a note on her phone, then tweets to Metro asking to have her compliments passed along. Rebecca Galanti is another rider lamenting the loss of human voices. She was struck one day in February by a particular operator’s voice. It was “angelic,” she said — a word not commonly associated with Metro. “She sounded so sweet, it brightened my morning,” said
Galanti, 23. A couple of months passed before she heard it again. But one morning last week, the voice descended through the intercom. “I recognized her voice, and it made me happy,” Galanti said. Certainly the silencing of operators’ voices isn’t the biggest problem riders face — “and the intercom can suck,” Adelman acknowledged — but the day before our conversation, she’d read a Twitter post from a man who had seen a woman fall and injure her knee while getting off a Metro train. He was enraged that no one else stopped. It struck Adelman that rush hour can be dehumanizing, and in that environment, any little bit of humanity — even a voice over the intercom — can come to mean a lot. She recalled, for example, the morning a bit of gallows humor brightened her spirits on a particularly crowded train. “Time to make friends,” the operator quipped. It did nothing about being pressed against strangers, but it made her smile. “It helps when someone verbally empathizes with our
What have you heard?
rush-hour commute,” she said. New York’s subway has come to the same conclusion. It’s using fewer automated announcements and more human ones. According to The New York Times, the city’s Metropolitan Transit Authority rewrote a script used by its operators to help them sound more empathetic to riders. On rainy days now, operators may say something like: “Hello. Subway floors and station platforms may be slippery today. Be careful when you get on and off the train, or when taking the stairs,” The Times said. “It’s about speaking in a more human tone, giving our customers clearer, better information, and really talking to them like they’re people,” a transit spokesman told the paper. Those moments are only going to become rarer here. Metro plans to replace its last 350 2000- and 3000-series trains — on which operators still make announcements — around 2024. They’ll be replaced by next-generation 8000-series trains, which will play robo-announcements. That will leave only 184 6000-series cars out of Metro’s 1,300-car fleet where you might hear an operator, once in a while, try to cheer you up.

S. Sudan pays lobbyist to improve Trump ties $3.7 million contract seeks to block parts of fragile peace deal
POLISH PRIORITIES
GETTY IMAGES
POLITICS South Sudan’s government is paying a U.S.-based lobbying firm $3.7 million to improve its relationship with the Trump administration and to block a path to justice for victims of the country’s five-year civil war. The two-year contract, seen by The Associated Press, was signed earlier this month by South Sudan’s government and Gainful Solutions, a lobbying firm run by former U.S. Ambassador Michael Ranneberger. The lobbying contract says the goal is to open a “channel of communication” between Kiir and President Trump in the hopes of “persuading” Trump’s administration to expand economic and political relations and support American privatesector investment in oil, natural resources, energy, gas and mining. The contract also says the company was hired to attempt to “delay and ultimately block establishment of the hybrid court.” The long-delayed court is a key part of South Sudan’s fragile peace deal signed in September and is meant to hold accountable those responsible for war crimes in a conflict that killed nearly 400,000 people. The contract was signed just

weeks before the peace deal’s next major deadline. Opposition leader Riek Machar is expected to return to South Sudan by May 12 to again become President Salva Kiir’s deputy in a unity government. That arrangement has been shaken more than once by outbursts of gunfire, and the opposition now seeks a six-month extension over security concerns. Worried observers have said the peace deal, already marked by delays and fighting, could fall apart. The government has repeatedly said it does not have enough funds to implement the deal’s $285 million initial phase. South Sudan’s opposition criticized the U.S. lobbying contract.
“It only shows the desperation the government is in, trying to evade accountability and justice ... misplaced priorities,” said opposition deputy chairman Henry Odwar. South Sudan’s deputy chief of mission in the United States, Gordon Buay, said there is no intention to abolish the hybrid court, but the priority needs to be on reconciliation rather than punitive justice. It will be a lot easier to hold leaders to account if the community is on board and that first requires reconciliation, he said. The Gainful Solutions lobbying firm did not immediately respond to a request for comment. SAM MEDNICK (AP)

JAKARTA, INDONESIA Indonesia’s decades-long discussion about building a new capital has inched forward after President Joko Widodo on Monday approved a long-term plan for the government to abandon overcrowded, sinking and polluted Jakarta. Widodo decided at a special Cabinet meeting to move the capital outside of Indonesia’s most populous island, Java, said Planning Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro. Other options were moving to a location near Jakarta or relocating all government buildings to a zone around the presidential palace. The site for a possible new capital hasn’t been announced, but Palangkaraya on the island of Borneo has often been rumored as the location. Brodjonegoro, however, said eastern Indonesia is favored. Prone to flooding and rapidly sinking because of uncontrolled ground water extraction, Jakarta is the archetypical Asian mega-city creaking under the weight of its dysfunction. Only 4 percent of Jakarta’s waste water is treated, according to the government, causing massive pollution to rivers and contaminating the ground water that supplies the city. Congestion is estimated to cost the economy $6.5 billion a year. Brodjonegoro said a new capital would require an area of about 74,000 to 99,000 acres and have a population between 900,000 and 1.5 million. (AP)

The Senate unanimously passed the bill Monday, two days after a gunman opened fire in a California synagogue, killing one and injuring three others. U.S. hits measles milestone HEALTH At least 704 people in the United States have been sickened this year by measles, a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening disease, according to a report released Monday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It’s the greatest number of cases in a single year in 25 years and represents a huge setback for public health after measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000. More than 500 of the people infected in 22 states were not vaccinated. Sixty-six people have been hospitalized, including 24 who had pneumonia. More than one-third of the cases are children younger than 5. No deaths have been reported in outbreaks this year. CDC officials said the United States is experiencing so many measles cases this year primarily because of the large outbreaks in New York and Washington state. Officials in Washington, where 72 people have become ill, declared the outbreak over on Monday. The New York City outbreak continues to grow; 33 new cases were reported in the last five days, officials said Monday, bringing the total to 367 cases so far in 2019. The outbreaks are centered in Rockland County and Brooklyn, in ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities, where

received summonses for violating the emergency order. In California, hundreds of college students were quarantined last week after one student with measles attended classes on three days while contagious at the University of California at Los Angeles, and another contagious person spent hours at a library at California State University Los Angeles. As of early Monday, 343 students and employees remained under
quarantine. The rare and extreme measures reflect the seriousness of this year’s outbreaks. In a statement Monday, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said, “We have come a long way in fighting infectious diseases in America, but we risk backsliding and seeing our families, neighbors, and communities needlessly suffer from preventable diseases.” “Vaccine-preventable diseases belong in the history books, not in our emergency rooms. The suffering we are seeing today is completely avoidable. Vaccines are safe because they are among the most-studied medical products we have,” Azar said. In recent years, anti-vaccine groups have spread discredited claims about the safety of the vaccine and minimized the dangers of measles. CDC officials blamed misinformation for low vaccination rates in some communities now hard hit by the outbreaks. To combat that misinformation, the agency has increased its work with health care providers and community leaders, said Nancy Messonnier, who oversees CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. The CDC is also working with rabbinical, camp and medical associations to help spread credible vaccine information to address questions from parents who are considering delaying or refusing vaccination, she said. Beluga whale’s Russian harness alarms Norway NORWAY A beluga whale found with a tight harness that appeared to be Russian made has raised the alarm of Norwegian officials and prompted speculation that the animal might have come from a Russian military facility. Joergen Ree Wiig of the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries says “Equipment St. Petersburg” is written on the harness strap, which features a mount for an action camera. He said Monday fishermen in Arctic Norway last week reported the tame white cetacean with a tight harness swimming around. On Friday, fisherman Joar Hesten, aided by the Ree Wiig, jumped into the frigid water to remove the harness. Ree Wiig said “people in Norway’s military have shown great interest” in the harness. Audun Rikardsen, a biology professor at the Arctic University of Norway, believes “it is most likely that Russian Navy in Murmansk” is involved. Russia has major military facilities in and around Murmansk, in the far northwest of Russia. It wasn’t immediately clear what the mammal was being trained for, or whether it was supposed to be part of any Russian military activity in the region. Russia does not have a history of using whales for military purposes, but the Soviet Union had a full-fledged training program for dolphins. During the Cold War, the Soviet Union trained the mammals to search for mines or other objects and plant explosives. (AP)

POLITICS Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein submitted his resignation Monday, ending a twoyear run defined by his appointment of a special counsel to investigate connections between Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia. His last

The White House nominated a replacement for the department’s No. 2 slot weeks ago. In his resignation letter to Trump, Rosenstein paid tribute to Trump, even praising the president’s sense of humor, despite being the subject of some of Trump’s most biting jabs. Political risk for Trump In response to Biden’s video, the president stands by his Charlottesville comments POLITICS First came Joe Biden’s campaign announcement video Friday highlighting President Trump’s “very fine people on both sides” comment about the 2017 whitenationalist rally in Charlottesville that left a counter-protester dead. Then Trump dug in, arguing that he was referring not to the self-professed neo-Nazi marchers, but to those who had opposed the removal of a statue of the “great” Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Less than 24 hours later came another act of violence described by authorities as a hate crime: Saturday’s shooting at a synagogue in Poway, Calif., in which a gunman killed one person and injured three others. The attack came six months to the day after a shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue left 11 people dead. Those events have pushed the rising tide of white nationalism to the forefront of the 2020 presidential campaign, putting Trump on the defensive and prompting even some Republicans to acknowledge that the president is taking a political risk by continuing to stand by his Charlottesville comments. “The president’s handling of Charlottesville was not one of the finer moments of his time in office,” Republican strategist Ryan Williams said. “He shouldn’t take Joe Biden’s bait and relitigate this controversy.” In response to the Poway synagogue shooting, Trump delivered a full-throated denunciation of anti-Semitism and hate crimes at the start of his Saturday night rally in Green Bay, Wis. In a statement Sunday, White House spokesman Judd Deere reiterated that Trump and his entire administration “have and will continue

Rosenstein to leave Justice post May 11
Rosenstein intended to leave in mid-March but stayed on for the completion of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. Mueller last month submitted his report to the Justice Department, and Rosenstein was part of a small group of department officials who reviewed the document and helped shape its public release. After Mueller didn’t reach a conclusion on whether Trump had obstructed the investigation, Barr and Rosenstein stepped in and determined the evidence wasn’t enough to support such an allegation. Rosenstein appointed Mueller in May 2017 following the recusal of thenAttorney General Jeff Sessions.
to condemn racism, bigotry, and violence of any form.” Deere said that Trump spoke on Sunday with Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, who was among those injured in the shooting, and expressed his condolences and support for the Poway community. And Trump advisers maintain that the president’s comments about Charlottesville were — in the words of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway on Sunday — “darn near perfection.” “All white supremacy, all neoNazis, all anti-Christianity, all anti-Semitism, all anti-Muslim activity should be condemned,” Conway said on CNN, arguing that Trump’s words were “twisted for many years for political purposes.” Nonetheless, the rise of whitenationalist violence during Trump’s tenure is emerging as an issue as the president turns his attention toward his reelection campaign. According to the
Trump’s past remarks After a gunman last month killed 49 Muslims in two mosque attacks in New Zealand, President Trump was asked whether he thought white nationalists were a growing threat around the world. “I don’t, really,” Trump replied. “I think it’s a small group of people that have very, very serious problems.” Trump also has a long history of anti-Muslim remarks, including saying in 2015 that he would “strongly consider” closing mosques in the U.S., declining to rule out the creation of a national Muslim registry and saying during a 2016 CNN interview, “I think Islam hates us.” (TWP)

white supremacists were responsible for 18 of 34 such crimes. Trump’s doubling down on his remarks in response to Biden’s video has prompted calls from the ADL and others for him to be clearer about condemning what happened in Charlottesville, where white supremacists brandished torches and chanted anti-Semitic slogans such as “Jews will not replace us.” “We need our leaders to lead, to be clear and consistent in calling out hate when it happens and to recognize there is a through line between Charlottesville and Pittsburgh and Poway,” ADL chief executive Jonathan Greenblatt said. “We know the extremists are feeling emboldened because they’re saying so. They’re communicating a sense of energy and optimism in their message boards and in their subreddits, and it should be alarming to all of us.” FELICIA SONMEZ AND ASHLEY PARKER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
TRAVEL Marriott is pushing more heavily into home-sharing, confident that its combination of luxury properties and loyalty points can lure travelers away from rivals such as Airbnb. The world’s biggest hotel company will soon start taking reservations through its website for 2,000 homes in 100 markets in the United States, Europe and Latin America. It plans to expand its Homes and Villas program to other locations. For its part, Airbnb is encroaching further into hotels. On Monday, the San Franciscobased company said it’s working with a New York real estate developer to establish a hotel with 200 suites in Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan. Airbnb, which plans to go public but hasn’t made clear when, also acquired Hotel Tonight, a lastminute booking service, in March. Marriott is targeting families and groups, and the homes skew toward luxury, with prices ranging from $200 per night for a one-bedroom apartment to $10,000 for a full Scottish castle. Marriott is a long way from matching home-sharing behemoths like Airbnb, which boasts 6 million listings worldwide, or Booking.com, which has listings in 220 countries. But Marriott believes it has advantages. Unlike its homesharing rivals, it has a loyalty program that lets travelers earn and use points on its hotels and homes. DEE-ANN DURBIN (AP)

Rosen thinks he can be a franchise QB

After winning the draft, can the Redskins’ rookies help win games this fall? First-round quarterback Dwayne Haskins and edge rusher Montez Sweat should be opening-day starters, while third-round wide receiver Terry McLaurin and fourthround guard Wes Martin might be, too. That’s four rookies who fill immediate needs as the best player available. (Funny how that occurs.) When Haskins starts will be the team’s most hotly debated topic. Washington opens with four 2018 playoff teams in the first five games so it looks like a 1-4 start no matter who’s quarterbacking. So why not let the rookie gain some experience rather than wait until the season’s lost? It’s not like the Giants’ quandary over replacing twotime Super Bowl winner Eli Manning with rookie Daniel Jones. Colt McCoy is the Redskins’ only returning passer, and three surgeries on his leg leave his future uncertain. Washington traded for Case Keenum as insurance, and he should be the backup. Haskins excels at what coach Jay Gruden likes most: accurate mid-range passes. The rookie needs some coaching up, but the future might as well start now if Washington
hopes to become a 2020 playoff contender. Besides, Washington’s offense will rely heavily on the running game to take pressure off Haskins. Sweat was a steal with the 26th pick after a misdiagnosed heart condition caused him to fall from the top 10, where he was originally projected. Playing opposite linebacker Ryan Kerrigan, Sweat is a potential 10-sack player on a front seven that might rank among the NFL’s elite. He’s the Redskins’ next breakout defensive player. McLaurin should line up outside along with Paul Richardson, with Trey Quinn inside on three-receiver sets. Maybe McLaurin isn’t quite ready to be an NFL starter, but he’s a familiar face for Haskins after the two played together at Ohio State. Certainly, Haskins will need that comfort zone. McLaurin is a disciplined route-runner who could be the red zone target that 2016 first-rounder Josh Doctson has never become. Washington desperately needs a left guard. Veteran Ereck Flowers will get the first chance at the starting job entering training camp, but he’s a short-term starter at best. The Redskins should develop Martin now rather than waste time. “Big Wes” is country strong after growing up on a dairy farm and can maul nose tackles on stunts.

The future is now: Rookies may play major role this fall
Don’t be surprised if QB Dwayne Haskins, top, edge rusher Montez Sweat, middle, and wide receiver Terry McLaurin start for the Redskins this fall.
Post-draft signings A pair of wide receivers in Kansas’ Steven Sims Jr. and Duke’s T.J. Rahming have agreed to undrafted free agent deals with the Redskins, according to their respective schools. Sims (2,582 career receiving yards, 19 TDs) and Rahming (2,919 yards, 13 TDs) were four-year contributors in college. Other post-draft additions to the Redskins’ roster include Tennessee State offensive tackle Chidi Okeke, Oregon tight end Kano Dillon, Washington safety JoJo McIntosh and Marshall defensive lineman Ryan Bee. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
To have four rookies playing prominent roles is asking a bit much, especially when one is a quarterback. But the Redskins are rebuilding rather than reloading. To break a three-year run of mediocrity, they need fresh talent. At least eight of 10 draft picks should make the team, with others adding depth and special teams help. By playing the newcomers, Washington could see future success much sooner.
Despite a rough rookie season that prompted the Cardinals to discard him, Josh Rosen says he still believes he can be a franchise quarterback. He was the 10th overall pick in the 2018 draft but became expendable in Arizona last week when the Cardinals used the No. 1 overall pick on Kyler Murray. A day later, the Dolphins acquired him for two draft picks to become part of their rebuilding effort under first-year coach Brian Flores. “I felt like I got drafted twice,” Rosen said. Doubts about his leadership and personality dating back to his time at UCLA linger despite efforts by teammates and coaches to dispel them. “Time and consistency are the best medicine to cure the narrative,” he said. Maryland assistant men’s basketball coach Kevin Broadus intends to leave the Terrapins program to become the head coach at Morgan State in Baltimore, according to a person close to the Maryland program. Broadus has spent two seasons on Mark Turgeon’s staff in College Park. Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports first reported Monday that Broadus was “finalizing a contract” with Morgan State, the historically black university that plays in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Broadus, a D.C.-area native, has deep ties to the local recruiting scene and helped Maryland land the No. 1 class in the Big Ten last year. (TWP)
Texas Tech men’s basketball coach Chris Beard has signed a new contract with an average annual salary of $4.575 million through the 2024-25 season after leading the Red Raiders to their first national championship game. The deal was announced Monday, three weeks after the Big 12 co-champions lost in overtime to Virginia in the national title game. It is the second year in a row that Beard, the AP national coach of the year, has been rewarded with a new contract. MVP hopefuls look to take control NBA PLAYOFFS The MVP front-runners are in some trouble. It’s a virtual certainty that Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo or Houston’s reigning MVP James Harden will win the coveted award this season. And while the voting results there won’t be known until June 24, the only results that matter right now are on the court. Antetokounmpo and the Bucks lost 112-90 on Sunday, their worst loss of the season, costing the No. 1 overall seed the home-court edge in their Eastern Conference semifinal series. Westin Hotels also has ramped up its fitness offerings. Perhaps the most ambitious is Westin’s “run concierge” program. Around 250 run concierges at properties around the world lead regular group excursions of about 3 miles. Misophonia is a chronic condition characterized by intense feelings of rage, fear and anxiety triggered by specific sounds, like hearing another person chewing. Experts say it often begins in late childhood. It worsens over time, often growing to include more trigger sounds, such as nail clipping or silverware scraping against teeth. “So far, there has been no controlled scientific data to support a specific treatment for misophonia,” says Zachary Rosenthal, chief psychologist and director of Duke University’s Center for Misophonia and Emotion Regulation. The new center aims to define misophonia and develop a scale to measure it. Until more is known, Rosenthal says, treatment should be multidisciplinary and include evaluations from an audiologist, occupational therapist and a psychologist.

Staying fit on vacation brands or hotels have often been at the forefront of offering all types of fitness and wellness amenities, the truth is that both the brands and the consumers they want to attract realize that health and wellness has universal appeal,” Ting says. In New York City, a business called Strength in Numbers (SIN) Workouts will send personal trainers to meet guests at its partner hotels. Vanessa Martin, founder and CEO, says she started targeting the hotel industry a few years ago, when she noticed that hotel gyms were often empty. “It was blowing my mind, recognizing that these properties are building out fitness centers in these beautiful hotels, but nobody’s taking advantage of them,” she says. SIN also offers a “fitness concierge” service to book classes for guests at a nearby studio, such as Barry’s Bootcamp, Pure Yoga, SoulCycle or whatever is the best fit for their workout preferences. Hotels now offer a wide range of ways for travelers to keep up with their workouts TRENDS It wasn’t the price or the location that most influenced Ruth Furman to book a stay at the Holiday Inn Express Waikiki in Honolulu last summer. It was the free poolside yoga. Furman knew the offering would improve the odds she would work out on vacation. It worked. “Since it was so convenient, it was a sure thing!” she says. Rather than going home regretful, she was able to take pride in consistently working out. With a little searching, travelers across the country can find hotels that offer more than a cramped gym to help them stay on top of their workout routine — whether it’s yoga classes, personal trainers or guided runs around town. Declines in fitness start after a week of inactivity. But you can work in workouts on vacation. That’s because the personalized fitness trend is gaining strength in a wide range of hotels, says Deanna Ting, senior hospitality editor for Skift, which covers the business of travel. “While luxury

We did it. We’re not doing it again. Q. In a moment of poor judgment, I slept with a co-worker at a conference. We are both single but it was not a good idea. I tried to tell her that right away, and things were OK for a while at work and I thought it was done with. But now we will be traveling together again and she is making all kinds of hints. I want to make sure this absolutely doesn’t happen again. Any advice? First? Absolutely don’t do it again. You have the power. Don’t tempt yourself and create a slippery slope by being alone with her, drinking with her, going to the floor her room is on, or being exposed to whatever other triggers you can figure out (and yeah, figure them out). My guess is, she thinks these triggers will win out, so your actions have to speak loudly.
Keeping this from happening anew will also establish a new norm to help prevent you from going through this all over again in the future. In the meantime, responding to her hints by addressing it again — in as non-winking a way as possible, with respect and discretion — can help. (Especially if you actually tell her — and not just “try” to — that you don’t want it to happen anymore.)
a moms group I joined. I have invited them to things and we have a great time but nobody seems to reciprocate! I’m tired of always being the one to keep things going. I’m someone who needs lots of social time and now that we are past the baby stage, I’m ready for solid, reciprocal relationships — not being the cruise director all the time. I hear this a lot. I think there’s a growing societal unwillingness to initiate social interactions that don’t involve clicking “like,” and in your friends’ case, it could be made worse by the all-encompassing whirlwind of caring for young children. It could be that in the cost-benefit analysis of remaining the initiator, the social time still comes out ahead. But you can also try to set up events that will develop their own momentum and have some reciprocity built in, like standing moms nights out, potlucks, book clubs or any other “insert your activity here, but with a rotating host” type of event. Maybe you’ve just had some bad luck with these noninitiators and there are better matches elsewhere, but you won’t know until you’ve given a nudge and seen what happens. Iron Man is box office gold FILM When Robert Downey Jr. and Marvel got together to shoot “Iron Man” in 2007, the two could have been looking in the mirror. They were both down and out and in need of redemption. Downey was well removed from his wunderkind years of “Less Than Zero” and “Chaplin” after a series of tabloid scandals. Marvel was undertaking the risky launch of a studio without its biggest characters (Spider-Man and the X-Men were licensed to other studios), forcing it to go with the lesser-known Tony Stark. No one thought Iron Man could be an A-list superhero. And no one thought Downey could be an A-list star. Eleven years later, Downey and Iron Man have overturned both assumptions. Downey’s nine Marvel Cinematic Universe films have now made over $10 billion, with “Avengers: Endgame” grossing an estimated $350 million in North America and $1.2 billion worldwide this past weekend — easily surpassing the previous opening-weekend records in both categories (held by “Avengers: Infinity War”). “What I find amazing about this franchise is that they managed to walk the tightrope between becoming just massively bloated and impossible to follow and putting together films that were actually interesting every

Robert Downey Jr. was once an unlikely star for Marvel to bank on
time,” said Bruce Nash, who runs the box office site The Numbers. As a tarnished star and a cinematically forgotten comic character, Downey and Iron Man seemed a strange pair. But somehow that made them well-suited to each other. Downey’s versatility, and his uncanny blend of vulnerability and swagger, helped elevate “Iron Man,” distinguishing it from being just a brand exercise with interchangeable parts. The year after “Iron Man,” Disney, seeing the potential for an entire universe of characters, bought Marvel and wisely left studio chief Kevin Feige in place. And Feige continued putting his chips on Downey. Modern Hollywood movies are usually a one-way equation for actors. In franchise films,
Blasting to the top “Avengers: Endgame,” with a $350 million opening, is well on its way to cracking Robert Downey Jr.’s top five films at the domestic box office. $679M ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ $623M ‘The Avengers’ $459M ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ $409M ‘Iron Man 3’ $408M ‘Captain America: Civil War’
the property makes the actor, not the other way around. The reverse is true for stand-alone and original hits, in which the movie would often be nothing without performers. But what’s unique about Downey and Iron Man is how the power went in both directions.
The property elevated the actor and the actor made the property. Neither could thrive without the other. But now that wheel turns, as Downey’s Marvel contract has ended with “Endgame.” The MCU can certainly go on very profitably without Downey; the past 18 months have brought the minting of heroes such as Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther and Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. Someday years from now we will recall the way they landed on the scene, recount the hit films they will have made and wonder how they could leave. The fresh face will become the fatherly sage. Time moves on. Only movies such as “Endgame” can transcend it. STEVEN ZEITCHIK (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Boyz’ director John Singleton dies at age 51 1968-2019 John Singleton, a screenwriter and film director whose powerful 1991 debut, “Boyz N the Hood,” earned him two Oscar nominations and was considered groundbreaking for its humane depiction of the lives of young black men on the violent streets of Los Angeles, died Monday. He was 51. His family confirmed the death in a statement, according to the Associated Press. The filmmaker, who had hypertension, was hospitalized in Los Angeles after having a stroke April 17. Singleton was the first African American and the youngest-ever Academy Award nominee for best director when he was recognized for “Boyz N the Hood” at age 24. To more mixed critical results, Singleton went on to direct films including “Poetic Justice” (1993), “Rosewood” (1997), “Shaft” (2000), “2 Fast 2 Furious” (2003) and “Four Brothers” (2005). In 2017, he created the FX series “Snowfall,” which is still airing. “I wanted to be taken seriously as a filmmaker, and my first film was taken so seriously,” he told The New York Times in 2005, “so I kept feeling like each film had to be more serious than the last one. Finally I said, you know what, I’m in this business because movies saved me from delinquency, movies saved my life. I just want to make movies. It doesn’t matter if they’re serious or not.” MATT SCHUDEL (TWP)

The dim lighting made some scenes difficult for viewers to decipher what was happening. Though fans complained about having to squint at their screens, others praised the showrunners’ dedication to realism, since the deadly battle took place at night.

The unknown man reportedly bore a resemblance to Adele’s estranged husband, Simon Konecki. “Adele is a strong woman and is determined to get on with her life, like any normal person who is getting over a marriage breakup,” a source told The Sun. “She has developed a real soft spot for American guys since living in L.A. and had a kiss with a very handsome gentleman in a New York bar. He had a big beard like Simon, but it was tidier and more groomed.” Adele reportedly has already finalized her divorce and is not “looking for anything serious,” the source said. (EXPRESS)
