Romney’s GOP Rivals Fall in Line Gingrich, Santorum seek assurances in exchange for support

Kdb_a[bo je ;dZehi[

Rick Santorum wants to ensure the GOP’s policy platform represents conservatives’ interests. Newt Gingrich wants help retiring his campaign debt and repairing his reputation. Both Republicans are expected to endorse their former rival Mitt Romney — and signal to their backers to fall in line behind the party’s presumptive nominee — but each wants assurances that Romney will deliver for them. Neither is rushing toward the task. Romney plans to meet Santorum on Friday and Gingrich plans to endorse him this week, an endof-primary dance that happens every four years once the party settles on a nominee. Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, quit the race April 10 but has stopped short of publicly embracing Romney as the GOP’s standard bearer after a bitter pri-

Romney, for his part, has been working to bring the party together after a bruising primary season, and nods from Santorum and Gingrich could help mend those wounds. Governor uses fame to draw $25 million for his recall election C_bmWka[[ Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has raised more than $25 million since January 2011 to defend his job, drawing heavily from prominent GOP players outside the state and dwarfing the amounts raised by his Democratic challengers. Other groups are contributing millions more in advertising. And Walker has leading Republicans campaigning for him, including New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. In a sign of how easy it’s been for Walker to raise money, his top eight donors accounted for $1.5 million. The two Democratic front-runners raised $1.8 million combined. An unprecedented amount of cash — about two-thirds of Walker’s campaign haul in the last report —

J_c[Êi Hkdd_d] Ekj Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s fundraising firepower and his broad support among the GOP elite illustrate the challenge facing his opponents. came from outside the state. “That’s a level of outside influence we’ve never seen before,” said Mike McCabe, executive director of the government-watchdog group Wisconsin Democracy Campaign. Of the $977,000 Democratic challenger Kathleen Falk raised between Jan. 1 and last week, nearly $449,000, or 45 percent, came from outside Wisconsin. Her chief rival in the Democratic primary, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, raised $831,500.

Democrats are counting on an electorate that they say is every bit as energized now as when demonstrators descended on Madison last year in response to Walker’s effort to end collective-bargaining rights for most public employees. Walker, who prevailed in the confrontation, said he acted to help the state deal with its budget deficit. Falk, Barrett and two other Democrats square off in a primary May 8. The winner takes on Walker in the June 5 recall election. DINESH R AMDE AND THOMAS BEAUMONT (AP)

The men were arrested Monday night after unknowingly working with an FBI informant for months, a strategy that federal investigators have used repeatedly in recent years to nab alleged terrorists. The alleged plotters researched explosives and obtained what they thought was C-4 explosives. The material, in fact, was harmless and the public was never at risk, because the men got it from the

A new Pew Research Center survey finds the Supreme Court’s popularity is at a 25-year low. The poll says 52 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the court, the lowest rating since the group started asking Americans their view of the high court in 1987. The court’s highest rating was in 1994, when 80 percent reported holding a favorable view of it. Even at 52 percent, the court ranks well ahead of Congress. Report Blasts Murdoch Reign British panel labels mogul unfit to lead global media empire BedZed A committee of British lawmakers called Rupert Murdoch unfit to run his global media empire — a finding that reflects just how deeply the phone hacking scandal born of his defunct News of the World has shaken the relationship between the press and politics. The divisive ruling Tuesday against Murdoch, his son James and three executives also exposed the waning influence of the media tycoon, and could jeopardize his control of a major broadcaster. Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sport committee — a panel that scrutinizes the standards of Britain’s press and sports authorities — began its inquiry amid dis-

British law offers no definition of what constitutes a “fit and proper” person, meaning that Britain’s broadcasting regulator must decide whether executives such as Rupert Murdoch, right, can be trusted to hold a broadcasting license. The House of Commons would need to decide on the punishment meted out to the three News Corp. executives accused of misleading it: Colin Myler, an exNews of The World editor; Tom Crone, the U.K. tabloid’s longtime lawyer; and Les Hinton, the former publisher of The Wall Street Journal. Parliament’s power to fine such offenders or send them to jail lapsed in the 18th century, but offenders can be called to the House of Commons to be admonished. (AP)

Syria’s Historic Sites Threatened 8[_hkj On its hilltop perch, the Krak des Chevaliers, one of the world’s best preserved Crusader castles, held off a siege by the Muslim warrior Saladin nearly 900 years ago. It was lauded by Lawrence of Arabia for its beauty and has been a crown jewel of Syria’s tourism. But the castle has fallen victim to the chaos of Syria’s uprising and the crackdown against it by President Bashar Assad’s regime. ment in Damascus. Syria’s turmoil is threatening the country’s rich archaeological heritage, experts warn. Some of the country’s most sig-

nificant sites have been caught in the crossfire in battles between regime forces and rebels. Others have been turned into military bases. In one of the most egregious examples, shells thudded into the walls of the 12th century al-Madeeq Citadel in March. What’s happening is reminiscent of Iraq’s chaos in the wake of Saddam Hussein’s 2003 fall, when Baghdad’s major museum was looted, and of Egypt, where looting has reportedly increased at archaeological sites around the country in the turmoil since Hosni Mubarak was toppled last year. (AP)

The panel also agreed that James Murdoch, 39, a former executive, was badly at fault over the scandal. Legislators agreed that both Murdochs must be “prepared to take responsibility” for corporate failures. News Corp. acknowledged on Tuesday that the panel’s report had uncovered some “hard truths.” In a message to News International staff, Murdoch, 81, said he found the findings “difficult to read” and that he deeply regrets what has taken place. Cuba Signals Travel Restrictions May End >WlWdW After controlling its citizens’ comings and goings for five decades, Cuba appears on the verge of a momentous decision to end many travel restrictions, with one senior official saying a “radical and profound” change is weeks away. That comment, by Parliament Chief Ricardo Alarcon, has many abuzz with speculation that the much-hated exit visa could be a thing of the past, even if Raul Cas-

Other top Cuban officials have cautioned against over-excitement, leaving islanders and Cuba experts to wonder how far Havana’s aging leaders are willing to go. “It would be a big step forward,” said Philip Peters, a Cuba expert at the Lexington Institute. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner headed to Beijing on Tuesday for high-level economic and security talks, hoping for progress on key issues despite looming political transitions in both countries and thorny diplomatic questions about the status of blind activist Chen Guangcheng. But observers say it is hard to predict whether momentum from earlier talks can be maintained in light of Chen’s escape from house arrest last week. The activist lawyer is believed to be receiving protection from U.S. diplomats, highlighting U.S. concern about China’s human rights record — concern that often puts China on the defensive. Obama’s Strategic Visit On symbolic date, U.S., Afghanistan sign deal spelling out post-war ties

the past decade. After the signing ceremony in Kabul, Obama returned to Bagram Air Field, where he had arrived under the cover of darkness. There he offered words of encouragement to assembled U.S. troops. He was to be on the ground for about seven hours in Afghanistan, where the U.S. has been engaged in war for more than a decade following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The trip carries major s y mbol ic sig n i f ica nce for a president, allowing him to showcase what the White House considers the fruit of his refocused war effort: the demise of bin Laden.

In a swift and secretive trip to the war zone, President Obama signed an agreement Tuesday night vowing long-term ties with Afghanistan after America’s combat forces come home. “There’s a light on the horizon,” he told U.S. troops on the one-year anniversary of Osama bin Laden’s death. The partnership spells out the U.S. relationship with Afghanistan beyond 2014. It is limited in scope and essentially gives both sides political cover: Afghanistan is guaranteed its sovereignty and promised it won’t be abandoned, while the U.S. gets to end its combat mission in the long and unpopular war but keep a foothold there. Obama f lew to the site of America’s longest war not only as commander in chief but also as an incumbent president in the early stages of a tough re-election campaign. Nor were the two roles completely distinct. Obama’s re-election campaign has suggested that GOP challenger Mitt Romney would not have made the same call in ordering the raid in which bin Laden was killed. Romney says he would have, and accused Obama of politicizing the anniversary.

The number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, which may fall to about 20,000 under a new pact signed Tuesday.

“Politicizing it and trying to draw a distinction between himself and myself was an inappropriate use of the very important event that brought America together,” Romney said Tuesday. Obama’s trip to Afghanistan was a reminder that since taking

office in 2009, he has ended the war in Iraq and moved to create an orderly end for the U.S. combat role in Afghanistan. The deal does not commit the U.S. to a specific troop presence or spending. But it gives the U.S. the ability to keep troops in Afghanistan after the war ends for two purposes: continued training of Afghan forces and targeted operations against al-Qaeda. Afghan President Hamid Karzai said his countrymen “will never forget” the help of U.S. forces over

M[bb#J_c[Z President Obama’s address Tuesday in Afghanistan — which was set for 7:30 p.m., after Express’ deadline — was scheduled to come exactly a year after special forces, on his order, began the raid in Pakistan in which Osama bin Laden was killed. The al-Qaeda chief wanted to see President Obama and Gen. David Petraeus assassinated, former Obama administration official Michael Leiter said Tuesday on NBC’s “Today” show, though Leiter said he didn’t think that was bin Laden’s top priority. Aides said the anniversary of bin Laden’s killing is not a focus of Obama’s trip. But they do not mind that Obama’s mission will serve as a reminder, six months before Election Day. (AP)

Bed]#J[hc 7]h[[c[dj The deal President Obama signed Tuesday with Afghan President Hamid Karzai essentially locks in a plan for the two countries in the post-war period: The U.S. commits to support Afghanistan’s social and economic development, security, institutions and regional cooperation. Afghanistan agrees to protect human rights of all Afghans. The U.S. designates Afghanistan as a “major non-NATO ally.” The U.S. commits to seek funding annually from Congress to support Afghan forces. One key unsettled issue is how many U.S. troops may remain in Afghanistan beyond 2014. (AP)

Meanwhile, support for keeping U.S. troops in Afghanistan is dropping all along the political spectrum, a new Pew Research poll says. Just 38 percent say the military effort is going well, down from 51 percent a month ago. Overall, polling shows, Obama gets favorable marks compared to Romney in handling terrorism, and the public approval for his handling of the Afghan war has hovered around 50 percent of late. The trip allows Obama to hold forth as commander in chief in the same week he plans to launch his official campaign travel with rallies in Virginia and Ohio. “We’ve spent the last 3½ years cleaning up after other folks’ messes,” Obama said last weekend. “The war in Iraq is over. We’re transitioning in Afghanistan. Al-Qaeda is on the ropes. We’ve done what we said we’d do.” BEN FELLER (AP)

CZ$ JhWdi_j 9[dj[h 9eiji 8Wbbeed Silver Spring facility’s price tag rises again, this time by $11M JhWdifehjWj_ed The cost of a Silver Spring transit hub that has been delayed repeatedly has ballooned by about $11 million, county officials said Monday. Now at $112 million, the price tag for the Silver Spring Transit Center is more than three times the original $35 million estimate. Montgomery County officials also said that the project, which is behind schedule, could be completed by August at the earliest.

Since its inception, the transit center — which would serve 100,000 people a day and bring together buses, Metro rail and MARC trains in the heart of Silver Spring’s revitalized downtown — has been beset by problems. In the past decade, its opening has been delayed at least seven times by changes in construction plans and insufficient funding. The most recent snag came in January, when the county alleged that construction workers improperly poured concrete on two floors of the building. Foulger-Pratt, the contractor in charge of construction, quickly fired back, saying the building was structurally sound.

The current estimated price for the Silver Spring Transit Center, more than three times the original $35M estimate.

It remains unclear whether concrete replacement or other solutions are needed. Foulger-Pratt recently submitted data to the county that it says show the concrete work is solid. David Dise, the county’s general-services director, said his staff is analyzing the data and will start negotiations with Foulger-Pratt in May. If the county decides that the

concrete is fine as is, then the construction should be completed by Aug. 22, Dise said. Monday, County Executive Isiah Leggett, a Democrat, said that if the county and Foulger-Pratt cannot come to an agreement, the county will sue. County officials said Foulger-Pratt would pay for fi xing the concrete. But the county must cover ot her cost s caused by delays, such as additional inspections and changes in construction plans. Those have caused the project’s price tag to increase by $3.2 million, according to county documents. V ICTOR Z A PANA (THE WASHINGTON POST )

D.C. Council Nixes Furlough Plan Members say surplus should go to needy, not to city employees MWi^_d]jed D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray and Council Chairman Kwame R. Brown were rolled by a majority of council members Tuesday after the council rejected an effort to repay city workers for furlough days they were forced to take last year. In a major blow to Gray and Brown’s efforts to manage the council, members derailed two separate compromises the mayor

After the council turned back a similar proposal two weeks ago, Gray and Brown hammered out an agreement last week that would spend about $22 million of the money to repay more than 20,000 workers who were forced to take four unpaid holidays because of budget pressures. But several council members rebelled against the proposal Tuesday, saying some of the city’s surplus funds should be used to shore

Brown, I-At Large, and David A. Catania, I-At Large, proposed an amendment that would have repaid city workers for two days, with $10 million going to affordable housing and to fill cuts to a program that provides health insurance to undocumented immigrants. During a break in the council proceedings, Gray and Brown signed off on the compromise to try to guarantee passage. But the measure was defeated in a 7-5 vote after some members said they could support only a measure that repaid employees for the four days. T IM

Ticket prices for passengers flying from Washington’s three major airports increased by more than 10 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, keeping pace with the cost of flying nationwide as airlines grappled with rising fuel costs. Calculations released by the Department of Transportation on Monday showed that regional ticket prices were highest at Dulles International Airport and lowest at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. The difference in average ticket price between the two, and Reagan National Airport, primarily was a reflection of the service they provide Dulles, with an average roundtrip price of $474, is the region’s busiest airport for international destinations. Reagan, where the average

was $381, is limited to domestic service. BWI, where the average ticket was $322, has international flights, but the airport is dominated by lowcost Southwest Airlines.

Redskins Stir Up Controversy. Or Not.

Is Less More With Ovechkin? Caps keep winning as their star player’s minutes are limited J^[ 9Wf_jWbi A glance at the Capitals’ playoff point leaders wouldn’t suggest anything is amiss with Alex Ovechkin. He’s Washington’s top playoff point scorer this year and he’s steadily climbing up the franchise’s overall standings for postseason points. Yet Ovechkin’s role in the team’s success this postseason has been limited. Instead of consistently leading the charge, he’s been watching the likes of Brooks Laich and Troy Brouwer gobble up ice time at critical moments of games. Even Jay Beagle — a fourth-line player who would typically skate 13 minutes or less in a regular season game — is seeing more on-ice time than Ovechkin. On Monday night, Ovechkin recorded a career-low 13:36 of ice time in the Capitals’ 3-2 Game 2 victory over the New York Rang-

ers — a game in which he scored the winning goal with a power play strike in the third period. The win ties the series at 1-1 as the teams get set to play Game 3 Wednesday at Verizon Center. “You have to suck it up and use time what

Dale is giving to me,” Ovechkin said of his limited time in Game 2. Despite being the team’s most potent offensive threat, Ovechkin is being benched. Critics have chalked it up to line pairings or the fact that the Capitals have been locked in onegoal games in which Ovechkin’s lack of defensive prowess could be costly. Regardless, his limited ice time presents an interesting question: Is playing Ovechkin less actually producing better results? During the Caps’ first-round series with the Boston Bruins, Ovechkin saw his ice time dwindle as the games became greater defensive struggles. After skating 28 minutes in Game 2, a 2-1 Caps win boosted by Ovechkin’s assist on the winning goal, his ice time dropped to

20 minutes in Game 3, in which he tallied a goal and an assist. In Game 4, he skated 17 minutes and had an assist, and then skated just 15 minutes in Game 5 with a minusone rating. The pattern is repeating against the Rangers. During Saturday’s 3-1 Game 1

loss in New York, Ovechkin skated 21 minutes, and his performance left much to be desired. Coach Dale Hunter responded in Game 2 with considerably less ice time, and Ovechkin scored the game winner. Hunter said Monday that the lack of ice time wasn’t a knock against Ovechkin, but rather just a response to the ebb and flow of the game. “Every time he’s on the ice he’s dangerous,” Hunter said. “He doesn’t need to have too much ice [time] to score goals.” REED S. ALBERS (FOR EXPRESS)

It took less than 48 hours after he became a Redskin for Robert Griffin III to get tangled in a quarterback controversy. Of course, he did nothing to instigate a debate. In fact, there really is no controversy, despite what ESPN would like you to believe. Kirk Cousins, Washington’s fourth-round draft pick, is the team’s backup quarterback of the future. Griffin, whom the Redskins 8o CWjj gave up three firstIm[died round draft picks to select, is the new face of the franchise. If the Redskins had any doubts about the Heisman Trophy winner, they either wouldn’t have traded up to the No. 2 pick in the draft or they would have made another swap once buyer’s remorse kicked in. Case closed.

?\ j^[ H[Zia_di \[bj 9eki_di mWi j^[ X[ij fbWo[h b[\j" _j mWi j^[ h_]^j f_Ya$ So why did they also draft Cousins, a well-respected prospect out of Michigan State? Probably because he was the best available player left. I know painfully well that the Redskins usually make all the wrong moves. This may be another. But, in fairness to them, if they felt Cousins was the best player available, it was the right pick. Another good offensive lineman might have been nice, but a bad one is a wasted spot. Maybe the Redskins can build Cousins’ value up and trade him down the road for a better lineman than was available last weekend. Teams need good backup quarterbacks, and if Cousins ends up saving the day should Griffin get hurt, that pick will be genius. To reach Matt Swenson, e-mail matt.swenson@readexpress.com

What a difference a year and a few roster moves can make. A season ago, D.C. United and the San Jose Earthquakes were whimpering to the finish line and missing out on the MLS playoffs. Now, they’re the two hottest teams in the league as D.C. brings its league-best sevenmatch unbeaten streak (4-0-3) into Buck Shaw Stadium for a midweek clash against the Western Conference-leading Earthquakes. Both clubs have had to overcome early injuries, and both have received major returns on the acquisitions of players who were with FC Dallas in 2011 — speedy winger Marvin Chavez has three assists for San Jose, while Maicon Santos has a team-high six goals for D.C. One D.C. player who might be able to offer insight into how the Earthquakes operate is center back Brandon McDonald, who played in San Jose for two years before being traded to D.C.

:[H[l[d][ <WYjeh Reigning MLS MVP Dwayne De Rosario had a quiet start to the 2012 season, but he is rounding into form, and it should come as no surprise that it is happening against his former teams. His recent hot streak (a goal and two assists in his past two games) has coincided with meetings against the New York Red Bulls and another former team, Houston. D.C.’s next three games are against San Jose, Toronto and Houston. Look out for DeRo. (A.C.)

Harper Is Already a Hit With Washingtonians J^[ DWj_edWbi One day before making his home debut, Bryce Harper took his first swings in D.C. on the National Mall. The 19-year-old was sightseeing during a day off Monday when a few guys playing softball recognized the Nationals rookie and asked him to take a few cuts. After politely declining, Harper ultimately accepted the invitation and hit a few drives before chatting with curious onlookers. He explained Tuesday, “I was trying to interact with the community, the fans, a little bit. I like doing that kind of stuff.”

“A lot of their success comes from them being so hard-nosed and willing to do the work off the ball defensively,” McDonald said. McDonald’s play will be a major factor in determining whether United can extend its unbeaten streak to eight games. He’ll be charged with the task of trying to slow down striker Chris Wondolowski, whose eight goals are second-most in MLS. “Around the box you have to keep a close eye on him. He’s clinical,” McDonald said. “We just have to be ready to go and grind it out.” AVI CREDITOR (FOR E XPRESS)

Redskins Release Gaffney After 1 Season Last year’s top threat made expendable by free-agent additions

SUMMER? Jobs for Teens

Of course working for money has obvious benefits, such as saving for upwardly spiraling college costs. Babysitting, working at restaurants and shops, and lifeguarding have been popular summer teen jobs for generations. This summer, however, the federal government has taken steps to help students get started in the federal workforce. The government’s Pathways Program offers federal internships for students at various levels, beginning at the high school level, and provides training and career development opportunities. Information on paid positions in federal agencies can be found at usajobs.gov. The Summer Youth Employment Program at the Library of Congress and a public affairs student intern position at the Department of Veterans Affairs recently were posted on the site. In addition, many area camps and clubs have summer job openings. For example, Beauvoir, the National Cathedral Elementary School, has jobs for counselor assistants, counselors in training (CITs), swim staff, lifeguards and aftercamp staff positions for high school and college students who are interested in working with young children. 16 and older to help in its extended day program. Their CIT program has attracted numerous area youth as well. See barrie.org/barrie-camp/camp-staff. Landon School’s summer camp also has a robust teen counselor program, as do many others.

Students should participate in summer activites that demonstrate active learning and engagement beyond the high school classroom in a field or area that highlights their passion and interests.” Looking Ahead To College Amy Ciccone, Director of College Counseling at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda advises that students should participate in summer activities that demonstrate active learning and engagement beyond the high school classroom in a field or area that highlights their passion and interests—whether that be an internship, shadowing opportunity, volunteer experience, job, a course for credit or a preCONTINUES NEXT PAGE

Summer Programs for High School Students If your high school student craves challenges, strives for success and is thinking about college, we invite them to make plans to study and explore Washington, DC at Georgetown University this summer. Programs are offered in Medicine, Science, Business, Politics, Law, Journalism and the Arts & Humanities. They can choose to participate in an 8-day intensive non-credit Institute or earn college credit for up to 10 weeks in our Fundamentals program or in undergraduate courses.

college course. “It’s especially helpful if this activity aligns with a prospective major—for instance, CONTINUED if a student is interested in the medical field, he/she could volunteer at a hospital, shadow a doctor, get an internship at NIH or take a course in molecular biology at the college level,” Ciccone said. Academic enrichment programs abound at Washington area schools and colleges, such as the University of Virginia and the University of Maryland. Summer Study Program has pre-college programs for high school students at four college campuses, including the University of Colorado and the Sorbonne in Paris. (See summerstudy.com.) Taking courses over the summer to obtain college credit or to beef up a high school transcript is no longer uncommon in this competitive climate. SAT/ACT prep courses and tutoring are also gaining popularity as summer activities for teens anxious about taking time away from their school-year studies, and increasing college admissions and scholarship success. Popular—but pricey—services include Prep Matters, Studypoint, Capital Educators and Kaplan Test Prep.

High school counselors and organizations like Habitat for Humanity also can assist students with tackling their student service learning hour requirements.” So You Want to Play College Sports? Sports are an entrée into college for many area athletes. For the student hoping to play college sports, “they need to attend camps with a variety of college coaches from schools that they are interested in,” said Kathy Jenkins, head girls’ lacrosse coach at Alexandria’s St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School, whose 600 career win record is unrivaled in the region. “In addition, the students need to work on developing their skills and try to play in a couple summer tournaments.” Jenkins has sent hundreds of players on to college lacrosse teams. Dwayne Bryant, director of athletics for Stone Ridge School and former Georgetown University basketball player, echoed this sentiment. “The reality is if a kid wants to play in college, he or she has to put in the time no matter what sport it is. He or she has to play three to four times a week for an hour or two a day to build the skills to compete at that level.” Noting that the college athletics recruitment process has changed a great deal since his high school days, Bryant said that “When [he] was growing up, it was all about getting into the gym and training. Now it’s about building skills specific to the sport being pursued.” One of Bryant’s daughters is playing soccer at Loyola University in Baltimore. His high school sophomore is ranked number ten overall in the country for soccer and number one for her position. She will play with her club team this summer at tournaments around the country in front of 200 to 300 college coaches. “These days college recruiting [for sports] starts sometimes in 7th or 8th grade, and there are no college rules against it.” Caroline Smith of North Bethesda followed this path.

Focus on Teens From sixth grade onward, Smith practiced with her lacrosse club team every summer and played tournaments each June and July. “The summer prior to junior year of high school is a big year for college recruiting,” Smith said. So she participated in a lacrosse camp last summer at Stanford University, and two other popular camps that are showcases for college coaches. Smith, who is in her junior year at Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School already is committed to play at Stanford University. Three other talented Visitation classmates are committed to play lacrosse at Yale, Brown and Berkeley.

Service Learning Some students use their summer break to complete their community service hour requirements. Horizons Greater Washington offers a six-week summer enrichment program designed to help a diverse population of children from low-income families to develop a lifelong interest in learning, advance academic gains over the summer, and improve achievement in school. Teen counselors are hired each year to work in the summer program, which is held at the Maret School, Norwood and St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School. “Many of our high school counselors started out in our program as a means for fulfilling their community service obligations but become completely hooked and continue to work throughout the school year in our Saturday program,” said Charis Keitelman, chair of the Maret Horizons Volunteer Council. “It is pretty competitive among high school students to become Horizons Assistant Teachers because we get many more applicants than spaces every year. Most repeat for other summers, and often will return from college to work at Horizons. It’s infectious working with these children.” High school counselors and organizations like Habitat for Humanity also can assist students with tackling their student service learning hour requirements.

Learn Something New But there seem to be few times in life that one has the luxury of such blocks of free time as school summer vacation. Why not learn to be a chef? Or a silversmith, potter or glass-blower? L’Academie de Cuisine offers summer classes for children and teens. The Bethesda cooking school offers week-long camps designed for children ages nine to 12 and teenagers from 13 to 17. This summer, the teen programs include a “tour of Italy” and French cooking techniques. Glen Echo Park’s offerings include dance, photography, ceramics, silversmithing and many other art media classes. The Writing Center’s summer screenwriting class will be held at Glen Echo Park as well. See glenechopark.org for more details. Why not pick up a new language? For example, the National Cathedral School is partnering with Middlebury Interactive Languages to offer two-week summer day academies in Spanish, Chinese and French for middle and high school students. Instruction is based on the renowned Middlebury immersion methodology. For more information, see mmla.middlebury.edu/summerday/overview.php Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education programs have gained popularity. The U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis has a summer STEM program in June for rising 8th to11th graders, allowing them to gain exposure to the number five “Best Undergraduate Engineering Program” in the country, as ranked by U.S. News & World Report. See usna.edu/Admissions/stem.html for more information. ]

Wendie Lubic has worked with parents and students in the Washington area for more than 17 years as a certified parent educator at the Parent Encouragement Program in Kensington, and as a college counselor with her College Lady college admissions counseling service. As an educational consultant, she recommends community service or internships for summer teen activities. “Students can find their passions via community service or internships, and you don’t have to go to the ends of the earth to do them,” Lubic said. “As long as they are committing themselves and doing things that matter to them, these are the best ways teens can spend their summer breaks.” Lubic’s student advisees have volunteered for Metro Teen AIDS, the Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, and various arts organizations. They have pursued internships at Walter Reed and taught physics and other subjects to inner city students. “Of course, paid work is great, but if you can’t find a paid job in this economy, or one that will keep a student’s interest, the student will be better served by doing something meaningful that really touches him or her,” she said. “Colleges are looking for that passion. They don’t want to see parents spending thousands of dollars to send their kids to China or Latin America to see poor people. They want that passion that really can be found in their own backyard.” n

Traditional summer camps have been a mainstay of children and teen summer memories for years. Nearby Barrie Camp, located on the 45-acre wooded campus of the Barrie School, has served children aged four to 14 since 1932. “In Maryland, it is the closest traditional camp to the nation’s capital,” said camp director Peter Vogdes. Minutes away from Washington, the Silver Spring camp offers on-site horseback riding, swimming, canoeing, acting and more. Campers who are 14 years old participate in Barrie’s CIT program where they spend half of their day in leadership training activities and service as a counselor-intraining. They learn skills while earning community service hours. “With our wide variety of activities and our perfect camp setting, where better to let summer be summer and kids be kids?” See barrie.org/barriecamp for more information. Other summer camps within a few hours of Washington include CampRimRockandCampAlleghany for girls in West Virginia, and Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer in North Carolina. If parents are overwhelmed by the choices available, services exist to help facilitate the decisionmaking process.

ADVENTURE CAMPS For some fortunate teens, summer is for travel. For example, Bold Earth Teen Adventures offers high school students summer camps of adventure travel, learning and leadership. Other well-known adventure travel programs include Overland, The Road Less Traveled, Rustic Pathways and Wilderness Adventures. Most of these combine travel experiences with community service, language immersion, adventure experiences and cultural appreciation.

Bethesda, Musical Theater Center in Rockville, Adventure Theatre’s Summer Music Theatre Camp at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Northeast, Studio Theater in Northwest and Arena Stage in Southwest. Some students, however, pursue opportunities on the other side of “the pond.” Ms. Sherion Cosby, a teacher at Westland Middle School in Bethesda, sparked a love of all things Shakespeare for Amaya Murphy of Chevy Chase when Murphy was a Westland eighth grader. Now a freshman at Savannah College of Art and Design pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts, she spent her high school summer breaks participating in theater programs. One such experience at the British American Drama Academy (BADA) the summer before her senior year “absolutely cemented her decision to pursue a career in acting and broadened her perspective regarding the talent that exists out there,” said her mother Arantza Murphy. Amaya was able to audition here in Washington for the BADA slot, which also gave her valuable experience for college performing arts admissions auditions.

Life’s Too Short HBO has cut short “The Life & Times of Tim,” and this time, it’s for good. After canceling the animated series in 2010, HBO about-faced and brought it back for a third season last year. But amid the buzz for “Girls” and “Veep,” “Tim” finally ran out of lives. Essentially a cartoon “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” the series followed Tim (creator Steve Dildarian), a 20-something New Yorker working a crappy corporate job. In each episode, Tim got himself into awkward situations, then 8o HkZ_ dug himself deeper and =h[[dX[h] deeper into a hole until he had no way out. Fortuitously, the show ended on a fitting note. With Omnicorp, Tim’s corporate overlords, facing a PR disaster, Tim is ordered out of the country while the company rebrands with a new name. Workers are taking the Omnicorp signage down from the building when Tim walks out for the final time. He looks up, sighs and realizes a giant O is hurling toward him. Cue his “Oh [expletive]” and cut to the credits. Like “The Sopranos’” famed cut to black, we may never know whether Tim lived or died. Then again, as Hank Williams sang in the show’s theme song, Tim never had a chance: “No matter how I struggle and strive/ I’ll never get out of this world alive.” HBO subscribers can relive “The Life & TImes of Tim” using Hbogo.com.

Carrie Underwood gets a little gloomy on ‘Blown Away,’ but the mood is fleeting

a suitor’s devious intentions. The title track follows with a much more compelling story line — an abused child prays for a tornado to destroy her broken home. “There’s not enough rain in Oklahoma/to wash the sins out of that house,” Underwood sings. It’s a gripping lyric, but the distorted guitars, thunderous drumming and wailing refrains make the song feel like an overcooked Taylor Swift hit.

7bXkc H[l_[m Carrie Underwood said her fourth album, “Blown Away,” would be “darker” than the country-pop sun rays she’s been known to radiate. False alarm. This is merely a trans-faux-mation — that thing pop stars do when they dabble in minor-key melodies and frowny lyrics, hoping their listeners will mistake a superficial shift in tone for a meaningful artistic left turn. The idea of Underwood going goth is an intriguing one, though. The 29-year-old has become a dominant voice in country music since winning “American Idol” in 2005, and she showed us she could snarl with the best of them right out of the gate. Her debut single, “Before He Cheats,” found her talking trash like a good girl gone super-bad. Double-cross this one and she’ll carve up the Michelins on your pickup like a jack-o’-lantern. So what happens when a honeyvoiced tire-slasher skews “darker”? We get only a handful of songs to find out. After that, the clouds part and our regularly scheduled Underwood album ensues, spilling over with creamy love songs of the heartthumpy and heart-achy variety. But first, the so-called dark stuff: The album kicks off with “Good Girl,” a bland rock song in which she warns a gal pal to watch out for

The mood starts to lift with “Do You Think About Me,” a fetching ballad about how memories of an old flame can trigger involuntary smiles. “One Way Ticket” offers peppy happy-hour advice over a diet-reggae beat that reeks of sunscreen, Corona Light and Zac Brown Band. “Sun’s shining bright and it’s meant for us,” she chirps. “Life is like a ride on a party bus!” Really? ... Little Broken Hearts

J^h[[ IjW][i E\ >[WhjXh[Wa Norah Jones gets out of a bad place on ‘Little Broken Hearts’ 7bXkc H[l_[m If her new record is any indication, Norah Jones is going through a bit of a hard time — but she’ll be OK.

The nine-time Grammy winner has been on a constant journey to keep things fresh and reinvent herself, evolving incrementally from the wav y-haired, bluesy young woman we met in 2002 when she released “Come Away With Me.” On her latest relea se, “… Little Broken Hearts,” she takes us through vignettes of grief,

Things take an unexpectedly upbeat turn on the uplifting “Out on the Road,” and the headbopping “Happy Pills,” where the singer puts up a verbal wall to her former lover, singing “You broke all the rules/I won’t be a fool for you no more my dear.” The album ends on a melancholy note with her mournful reverie, “All a Dream.” W it h blue s y a nd s ou l f u l undertones, Jones is leaving her relationship baggage behind, g iv i ng it it s mou r n f u l due, but e me r g i n g w i s e r — a nd better — from the experience. But it did not receive the same reception from die-hard hip-hop fans, many of whom heard the dizzyingly eclectic, guest-filled project and won-

dered, “What are Hayley Williams and Rivers Cuomo doing on this album, and what have they done with B.o.B?” On “Where Are You (B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray)” a track from “Strange Clouds,” B.o.B’s sophomore album, the rapper addresses the backlash that came from fans surprised by his pop-leaning debut. acceptance and release within a breakup. The moody production footprint of Brian Burton, aka Danger Mouse, is felt on such songs as “Say Goodbye” and the take-noprisoners title track, where she’s out to recover emotional losses. On “Take It Back” and “4 Broken Hearts,” Jones goes back and forth between blaming a lover and herself for their relationship’s demise. The pace picks up on “After the Fall,” but the mood stays dark and mellow.

liked your other [stuff].” “Strange Clouds” should quiet some of that criticism, though. Through varied production and diverse guests, the album is a good mix of the light, mainstream sound that has brought B.o.B fame, and more straightforward hip-hop. But “Strange Clouds” is at its strongest when it manages to appeal to all, as with the Morgan Freemanassisted “Bombs Away,” and the title track, because nothing unites music lovers like a hazy ode to weed. I_jYeci “The Middle” tends to get overlooked, which is the theme of tonight’s new episode. It’s hard to get noticed when a show shares a night with “Modern Family,” the Emmy-winning series that has been singled out for critical love since before it debuted. “The Middle” breaks no new ground. At times, the scenes between Frankie Heck (Patricia Heaton) and her husband, Mike (Neil Flynn), are perfectly believable and natural, but also a little like warmed-over “Everybody Loves Raymond.” Still, you have to admire a show that goes out of its way to be unstylish and unhip. A stand-out is Sue Heck, played with gusto and sensitivity by Eden Sher. Awkward, beset with braces and energetically obtuse, Sue is

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You will demand honesty from those around you today. Anyone who tries to deceive you at this time will be courting trouble. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) It’s a good day for you to experiment a little more freely with the way you interact with others — especially those in positions of authority. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’ll hit on just the kind of idea that excites others today, but you mustn’t let anyone rush you into putting it to the test prematurely. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You aren’t likely to get the response you expected from a certain plea today. What happens, however, may send you in a new direction. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) As busy as your schedule may be, you will be able to find time to give a loved one the attention and care that is deserved.

Yesterday’s Solution

Yesterday’s Solution

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Rest and relaxation are not to be undervalued today — you need as much as you can get at this time, to be ready for a coming challenge. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You may be struggling with a decision that someone else can make quite easy for you by reminding you of a few important facts. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may be asking yourself “why? on many occasions today; understanding the reasons for things is quite important to you at this time.

<EKH H79A JEJ7B Make a 2-7 letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) It’s a good time for you to reach out to someone who, only recently, seemed to disappear from the landscape of your daily life. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Your desires may be at odds with your needs today. A friend or loved one knows just what you are going through without asking.
