OK, Brian. Since the roller coaster is so safe, why don’t YOU try it?

Firefighters rescued a man who got stuck dangling 60 feet up in a tree while trying to retrieve a drone. Daniel Lacourse said the drone got caught in the tree in Manchester, N.H., two weeks ago. Initial efforts to free it failed, so he borrowed climbing gear, looked up “how to climb” on YouTube and went up the tree Wednesday. Lacourse got stuck hanging onto a rope; he said he “didn’t expect it to be so difficult and take so much endurance.” (AP)

Police in Maine say a man who robbed a bank used his unwitting father as a getaway driver. An affidavit says Keith Tilton dropped his son, Joseph Donald Tilton, at a Lewiston bank Tuesday, believing his son needed to cash a check. Instead, police say, Joseph Tilton, 39, robbed the bank. Keith Tilton was later stopped by police who had the getaway car’s description. He wasn’t charged. Joseph Tilton was charged with robbery for stealing $620. (AP)

The vice president of an amusement park where a roller coaster sent two crash test dummies flying out of the park and onto a hotel roof says the roller coaster is perfectly safe, WCAU-TV reported Monday. “Obviously it’s not something that would ever happen with a person in it,” said Brian Hartley of Playland’s Castaway Cove in Ocean City, N.J. “You don’t lose rigidity in a person. He’s been wanting a gold ring with a lion. “I’m a Leo,” he said. He saw the “Retirement Sale” signs in the window of the store at 13th and G streets NW and knew his time was running out. “You better get that ring,” said David Broder, 67, who runs the store with his brother Marc. Diamonds may be forever, but the same cannot be said for the jewelry business. Tastes have changed since the brothers’ father opened the store in 1946. Back in the ’70s and ’80s, a lot of men would come in, like Cherry, looking for some bling for their fingers or their necks. “Remember Mr. T?” David says of a time when men wearing strands of gold was common. “We used to sell as much men’s jewelry as women’s. That’s unheard-of now,” he said. “We used to have a lot of pimps

at the currency exchange the brothers started. Marc plans to continue that part of the business at nearby Bensons Jewelers. “You used to have to take a number. We were like the Apple store,” David said. Some will still come in to try things on. “They’ll say, ‘I’ll be back tomorrow.’ But people don’t come back tomorrow. They go on the internet and buy it,” David said. By the end of May, the Broders’ store will close. Its quiet demise comes as changing trends hit even the largest jewelers. Signet Jewelers, which runs Kay Jewelers and Zales, among others, announced that it plans to close 150 stores. From behind the glass counter, Marc said he’s seen romance fade a little. Nervous young men used to come in alone, trying to decide on an engagement ring. “A guy picking out a ring as a surprise is almost nonexistent,” Marc said. “A lot of times guys will come in with a picture of a ring she’s picked out.” Sometimes couples will come to pick up the ring they’d ordered. The man will get down on one knee and propose. Marc thinks that’s sweet. But a little anticlimactic. KERY MURAKAMI (EXPRESS)

Bowser unveils pot bill D. C. mayor wants to legalize recreational marijuana, but could face a fight with feds

THE DISTRICT D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, D, announced legislation Thursday to legalize and regulate recreational marijuana dispensaries in the nation’s capital, setting up a potential showdown with the federal government. The District’s marijuana laws are in limbo. Residents can legally grow and possess small amounts of the drug under a 2014 voter-approved law. But they cannot legally purchase pot, and the city cannot tax sales because of a provision in the federal budget that prohibits the District from enacting or enforcing marijuana legalization laws. Advocates have been hopeful that Congress would strip the anti-marijuana language — which originated with House Republicans — from the federal budget now that Democrats control the House. But it is unclear whether the next spending plan will pass before the 2020 elections. The mayor wants to get moving on legalization before then. “We want to be able to regulate, we want to be able to make sure we are collecting our fair share in taxes, we want to invest those taxes in ways that affect communities that have been disproportionately affected, and we want to train and hire D.C. residents,” Bowser said in an interview Wednesday with The Washington Post at a medical marijuana cultivation center. A spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md., who led the charge to stop D.C. from legalizing marijuana, did not immediately return a request for comment. The 69-page “Safe Cannabis Sales Act” would rename the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration and task the agency with licensing and overseeing marijuana businesses.

The city’s eight medical marijuana cultivation centers also would be authorized to grow the drug for recreational purposes if the bill passes. Regulators would be able to issue additional licenses six months after the law takes effect, but marijuana businesses would not be concentrated in specific neighborhoods, and they would have to have discreet signs. “We are not going to be a marijuana destination,” Bowser said. “We will not be promoting it. We want D.C. residents to be able to have the choice to buy legally, and we also want to drive out the illegal market, which we know can promote violence in our communities.” The minimum age to purchase marijuana would be 21. The bill would also crack down on attempts to avoid the existing restrictions on selling marijuana by offering it as a gift in exchange for purchasing clothing,

Equity issues The legalization of marijuana is complicated by racial dynamics. Some people are concerned that the industry is dominated by white-owned businesses, while African Americans are jailed for drug offenses at disproportionate rates. In an effort to address equity concerns, Mayor Bowser’s bill would seal the records of people with misdemeanor pot possession convictions. It also requires 60 % of companies’ owners and workforce to be D.C. residents. (TWP)

artwork or other items. Bowser wants to impose a 17% sales tax on marijuana products, with revenue funding enforcement of marijuana laws and affordable housing programs. Home delivery would be permitted. The bill does not allow for smoking at rooftop bars, sidewalk

patios or at other private businesses, but it gives regulators an opportunity to allow marijuana consumption at dispensaries and at hookah lounges. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, D, said lawmakers will hold hearings on legalization, but that residents should not get their hopes up for quick action as long as the congressional prohibition remains law. “It’s a ridiculous situation: that citizens may possess small quantities of cannabis, but it’s illegal to buy it,” Mendelson said in a statement. “Thanks, Congress.” D.C. would be the first jurisdiction in the Mid-Atlantic with a full-fledged legal marijuana market if Bowser’s bill passes. Ten states have legalized recreational marijuana, including the entire West Coast, Alaska, Nevada, Colorado, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts and Michigan. FENIT NIRAPPIL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The D.C. tourism board Events D.C. approved a 35,000-squarefoot retail and entertainment space and potential sportsbook at Nationals Park, as the city prepares for legalized sports betting. Events D.C. President and CEO Gregory O’Dell said the retail space on First Street SE was originally envisioned as a sports lounge, but could be converted to a sportsbook. The Nationals have not revealed their plans for the area and declined to comment for this article. The District’s contribution for the new space, authorized by the Events D.C. board, is $3.6 million, while the baseball team is expected to spend as much as $60 million to build it out. The area is set to open in 2020, according to Events D.C. D.C.’s elected officials legalized sports betting last year, paving the way for sportsbooks at arenas, betting machines in restaurants and a city-owned betting app for smartphones. The law specifically allows brick-and-mortar establishments for wagering at Capital One Arena, Nationals Park, the newly constructed Audi Field and the St. Elizabeths East Entertainment and Sports Arena. The city charges $250,000 for a five-year license for sports gambling sites. District officials have said they would like to launch sports betting by the fall. FENIT NIRAPPIL

Mayor Pugh announces resignation

BALTIMORE

Ex-bishop who killed cyclist to get early release

BALTIMORE Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh, who is under state and federal investigation over lucrative sales of her self-published children’s books, resigned Thursday, plunging the already rattled city into another political crisis. Pugh, D, a former state legislator, has faced public scrutiny since March, following news reports about the book deals with companies that do business with the city and state. Citing deteriorating health following a bout of pneumonia, Pugh took a paid leave April 1 and hasn’t been seen in public since. Her attorney, Steven Silverman, announced her resignation Thursday afternoon at his downtown law office, calling it a “sad day for Baltimore” and reading a brief statement from Pugh, who was believed to be at her home in the northwest part of the city. Silverman departed without taking questions. The resignation ends weeks of sometimes frenzied speculation over whether Pugh would seek to stay in office. Her departure is a bruising setback for a city long

besieged by poverty and violence and still recovering from a series of police corruption scandals and rioting in 2015 related to the death of Freddie Gray. Pugh, 69, is the second Baltimore mayor in the past decade to leave office while facing corruption allegations. City Solicitor Andre Davis said portraits of Pugh were being removed from the walls of City Hall on Thursday and stationery was being reprinted with the name of Bernard C. “Jack” Young, 64, who was elevated from City Council president to acting mayor when Pugh went on leave last month. He now becomes mayor. Davis, a former judge, told reporters that when he joined the Pugh administration 18 months ago he “saw a woman, a politician, an elected official who was absolutely dedicated to its people.” “I just want people to pray for her, hope that she comes through this as a whole person because she is a human being,” he said, his voice emotional. “We’re all flawed. … Sometimes we have difficulty facing what is in front of us in our lives.” Young, who was attending a

“I am sorry for the harm I have caused to the image of the city of Baltimore and the credibility of the office of the mayor. Baltimore deserves a mayor that can move our great city forward.” BALTIMORE MAYOR CATHERINE PUGH, in a statement read by her attorney, announcing her immediate resignation amid a book scandal and an illness

conference in Detroit on Thursday, has said he will not run for mayor in 2020, when a plethora of other candidates are expected to seek the city’s top office. “I have listened to the concerns of our citizens and I will continue to work diligently to address those concerns,” Young said in a statement. “Although I understand that this ordeal has caused real pain for many Baltimoreans, I promise that we will emerge from it more committed than ever to building a stronger Baltimore.” P ugh’s resignation does

provide a measure of resolution after weeks of uncertainty and mounting pressure for her to step down. Maryland’s Republican governor and numerous Democrats had pressed for her resignation, saying she was no longer fit to lead Baltimore. “This was the right decision, as it was clear the mayor could no longer lead effectively,” Gov. Larry Hogan said in a statement Thursday afternoon. “Baltimore City can now begin to move forward.” PAUL SCHWARTZMAN AND PETER HERMANN (THE WASHINGTON POST)/AP

Pelosi accuses Barr of lying Attorney general might face contempt charge for snubbing hearing

India’s coast evacuated as cyclone nears JIM WATSON (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

POLITICS House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Thursday accused Attorney General William Barr of the crime of lying to Congress, further escalating a bitter feud between House Democratic leaders and the nation’s top law enforcement officer. “He lied to Congress,” Pelosi said of Barr during a news conference. “The attorney general of the United States of America was not telling the truth to the Congress of the United States. That’s a crime.” The accusation stemmed from a response from Barr during a congressional hearing last month. At the time, Barr said that he was not aware of any concerns that special counsel Robert Mueller’s team might have expressed about a four-page summary Barr wrote regarding the probe of Russian interference in the 2016 campaign. That appeared to contradict a memo that surfaced this week in which Mueller wrote to Barr raising concerns that Barr’s summary “did not fully capture the context, nature, and substance” of the investigation. Asked whether Barr should be jailed for lying to Congress, Pelosi replied: “There’s a process involved here.” Her comments brought a sharp rebuke from Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec, who

The House Judiciary Committee hearing Thursday focused on the absence of Attorney General William Barr.

said in a statement: “Speaker Pelosi’s baseless attack on the Attorney General is reckless, irPelosi responsible, and false.” Pelosi’s news conference came shortly after Barr was a no-show for the House Judiciary Committee hearing on his handling of the Mueller report, angering House Democrats who moved closer to holding him in contempt of Congress. Barr informed the committee Wednesday he would not testify because of objections to Democratic plans to have a counsel question him alongside lawmakers. Also on that day, he missed a subpoena’s deadline

to hand over the full, unredacted Mueller report and underlying evidence. Democrats Barr cast the snub as not just one witness rebuffing a congressional committee, but rather as a threat to democracy that would reverberate long after President Trump left office. Trump has vowed to “fight all the subpoenas” from Democrats, sued to block compliance by accounting firms and banks, and instructed former and current aides to ignore the repeated requests from Capitol Hill. “We must come together to protect the integrity of this chamber,” said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., chairman of the

committee. “The administration may not dictate the terms of a hearing in this hearing room. The challenge we face is bigger than a single witness.” Nadler told reporters that the administration’s refusal to cooperate, reflected in Barr ignoring the committee, is a “grave danger for American democracy.” He said he would await a response from the attorney general but would proceed to hold him in contempt in a “day or two, maybe by Monday. We’ll see.” In the hearing Thursday, Republicans ignored Nadler’s plea for their help defending the institution. Rather, they turned their fire on the chairman and accused him of making unprecedented demands on Barr. RACHAEL BADE AND JOHN WAGNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

WEATHER Hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated along India’s eastern coast Thursday as authorities braced for a cyclone moving through the Bay of Bengal that was forecast to bring extremely severe wind and rain. The India Meteorological Department in New Delhi said Cyclone Fani was expected to make landfall on Friday with gale-force winds of up to 124 miles per hour that would likely start Thursday night. It warned of “extremely heavy falls” over parts of the states Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. India’s National Disaster Management Authority forecast “high to phenomenal” sea conditions for most of the Indian states along the Bay of Bengal. A 4.9-foot storm surge was expected to hit low-lying areas. Odisha’s special relief commissioner, Bishnupada Sethi, said that preparations for Fani included the country’s largest evacuation operation, of around 880,000 people. The National Disaster Response Force dispatched 54 rescue and relief teams to floodprone areas along the coast and as far afield as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, located 840 miles east of mainland India. Fani was also forecast to hit Bangladesh, tracking north through ports including Cox’s Bazar, the coastal district where more than a million Rohingya from Myanmar live in refugee camps. (AP)

Facebook bans extremists TECHNOLOGY Facebook said Thursday it has permanently banned several far-right and anti-Semitic figures and organizations, including Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, Infowars host Alex Jones, Milo Yiannopoulos and Laura Loomer, for being “dangerous,” a sign that the social network is more aggressively enforcing its hate speech policies under pressure from civil rights groups. Facebook had removed the accounts, fan pages and groups affiliated with these individuals after it re-evaluated the content that they had posted previously, or had re-examined their activities outside of Facebook, the company said. “We’ve always banned individuals or organizations that promote or engage in violence and hate, regardless of ideology. The process for evaluating potential violators is extensive and it is what led us to our decision to remove these accounts today,” Facebook said in a statement.

Many in U.S. want changes in government Most Americans are yearning for big changes to the way the U.S. government is structured, according to a new survey by the University of Chicago Harris School for Public Policy and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Social network deems Louis Farrakhan and Alex Jones ‘dangerous’

Clockwise from upper left: Louis Farrakhan, Laura Loomer, Alex Jones and Milo Yiannopoulos were all banned from Facebook on Thursday.

None of the people banned was immediately available for comment. Jones, for example, recently hosted Gavin McInnes, the leader of the Proud Boys, whom Facebook designated as a hate figure in December. Yiannopoulos, another alt-right social media star, publicly praised McInnes this

year, and Loomer appeared with him at a rally. Jones and Yiannopoulos have been temporarily banned before by Facebook and other social media platforms including Twitter. But Facebook and its counterparts have largely resisted permanent bans, holding that objectionable speech is permissible, so

long as it doesn’t bleed into hate. Facebook has also been wary of offending conservatives, who have become vocal about allegations that the company unfairly censors their speech. The bans are likely to be welcomed by civil rights activists, who have long argued that these individuals espouse violent and hateful views and that Silicon Valley companies should not allow their platforms to become a vehicle for spreading them. Madihha Ahussain, special counsel for anti-Muslim bigotry with the advocacy group Muslim Advocates, said that individuals like Loomer, Jones and Yiannopoulos have used social media platforms to broadcast dangerous hate speech and conspiracies targeting Muslims, Jews and others. “We applaud Facebook for taking this positive step toward removing hate actors from the company’s platforms,” she said. “As we saw in Christchurch, New Zealand — where a white nationalist was able to livestream the slaughter of 50 people at two mosques — online platforms like Facebook have been used to target communities and spread hate.” ELIZABETH DWOSKIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

4 feared dead after raft flips in Rio Grande IMMIGRATION U.S. border agents were searching Thursday for three children and a man after their raft flipped in the night on the Rio Grande as they tried to cross the U.S.-Mexico border, but they were feared dead, a law enforcement official said. The missing included a 10-month-old baby, a 7-year-old boy and another child believed to be around the same age, as well as a man. According to the official, Border Patrol agents encountered a man at about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday evening near Del Rio, Texas. He told them a raft carrying nine people had overturned and his baby son and nephew had been swept away, along with the other child and man. Migrants often try to cross the river, mostly in poorly constructed rafts with no safety gear, and the water can be deceptively high and fast-moving. A record number of Central American families are crossing the border, some on foot and some via the river. Just last week, border agents rescued 10 people in a sinking raft in the same area, including a 3-year-old child who had become separated from her mother on the Mexico side. During the last budget year, rescue teams at U.S. Customs and Border Protection responded to more than 4,300 emergencies. There were 283 deaths, including those who drowned or died in the deserts. The high was in 2005’s fiscal year, when 492 people died. COLLEEN LONG (AP)

Venezuelans return to difficult daily life After aborted uprising, life in the crisis-stricken nation reverts to norm

VENEZUELA Bumping shoulders with fellow shoppers at Caracas’ biggest open-air market, Naira Garcia had no trouble tuning out the messy political struggle that plunged Venezuela into two days of deadly violence this week. She focused instead on her own daunting task: how to feed her family of five for the next two weeks on the $4 in her pocket. Like many of Venezuela’s poor, Garcia scrapes by on odd jobs. “There are good days and bad days,” said the 43-year-old mother of three teenagers. “I never abandon my faith.” The bustling Coche Market is a sign that Caracas has returned to what passes for normal life after the outburst of violent unrest that left at least four dead. It began Tuesday when U.S.-backed opposition leader Juan Guaidó called for a military uprising to overthrow President Nicolás Maduro. The socialist Maduro is blamed for leading Venezuela into the deepest economic and political crisis in its history, despite having the world’s largest oil reserves. Soaring hyperinflation has pulverized paychecks in a nation where the average

monthly wage is $6.50. Opposition leaders had hoped that Guaidó’s risky move would stir a string of high-ranking military defections and shake Maduro’s grip on power. But no rebellion materialized, and instead two days of deadly clashes ensued between protesters and police in cities across the country. Two people were killed by gunfire in the city of La Victoria and two others in Caracas, according to the Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict. Activists said at least 230 people were injured and 205 were detained during the clashes. Maduro on Thursday urged the armed forces to combat “traitors” as he sought to project

strength. Speaking at Fort Tiuna, a military base in Caracas, Maduro also said the opposition had sought to provoke bloodshed in the capital at Guaidó’s urging. Meanwhile, Venezuela’s top court ordered the arrest of opposition activist Leopoldo López, who took refuge at the home of the Spanish ambassador after joining Guaidó’s attempt to topple Maduro in violation of his house arrest. López was detained for leading anti-government protests in 2014, and had been under house arrest for two years. Three-eyed snake found in Australia Wildlife officials in Australia’s Northern Territory found a juvenile carpet python with three eyes, all thought to be functioning, next to a road near the town of Humpty Doo, The Sydney Morning Herald reported Thursday. The extra eye protruded from its forehead. The snake, dubbed Monty Python, died shortly after being found. U.S. contested Arctic policy Administration pushed to cut climate change from group statement ENVIRONMENT The Trump administration sought to remove references to climate change from an international statement on Arctic policy that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is expected to endorse next week in Finland, leading to testy negotiations over how much to emphasize an issue considered a crisis for the region. The Arctic Council declaration is an affirmation of goals and principles among the eight Arctic nations, which meet every two years. The Trump administration’s position, at least initially,

threatened a standoff in which the U.S. would not sign on to a statement that included climate discussions, and other members would not agree to a version that left it out, according to senior diplomats and others familiar with the talks. The administration objected to language that, while nonbinding, could be read as a collective commitment to address the effects of climate change in the Arctic, diplomats said. One official familiar with the preparations for this year’s meeting said that last month, the U.S. “indicated its resistance to any mention of climate change whatsoever.” Three officials from member states, who described the negotiations on condition of anonymity

House: Keep U.S. in pact The House approved a bill Thursday that would prevent President Trump from withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris climate accord. to discuss sensitive diplomatic discussions, said the U.S. position appears to have softened in recent days. During a briefing with reporters previewing the trip, a senior State Department official declined to address whether the U.S. had taken such a hard line.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity under State Department rules, said the U.S. is a leader in research into the changes occurring in the Arctic, and has worked to reduce its CO2 emissions and black carbon output. “It’s not an issue we shy away from,” the official said. “We’re very proud of our record.” Climate change has become a key issue for the council, which includes the U.S., Canada, Russia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland. Scientists say the Arctic is warming about twice as fast as the rest of the planet, affecting sea levels and weather patterns. ANNE GEARAN,

NEANDERTHAL KIN

Nearly 40 years after it was found by a monk in a Chinese cave, a fossilized chunk of jawbone has been revealed as coming from a mysterious relative of the Neanderthals. Until now, the only known remains of these Denisovans were a few scraps of bone and teeth recovered in a Siberian cave. DNA from those Siberian fossils showed kinship with Neanderthals. The jawbone is at least 160,000 years old, scientists reported Wednesday in the journal Nature. (AP)

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL | Drivers stop and stand in silence Thursday on Holocaust Remembrance Day, which marks the anniversary of the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto uprising. A two-minute siren wailed across Israel as pedestrians stood in place, buses stopped on busy streets and cars pulled over on major highways. In homes and businesses, people stopped what they were doing to pay homage to the victims of the Nazi genocide.

LONDON A defiant Julian Assange told a London court Thursday he will fight extradition to the U.S. to face charges of conspiring to hack into a Pentagon computer, arguing that his work as WikiLeaks founder has benefited the public. Speaking by video link from prison in London, Assange said: “I do not wish to surrender myself for extradition for doing journalism that has won many awards and protected many people.” His formal refusal to be extradited marks the start of what is expected to be a bruising legal battle over whether he will be brought to trial in the U.S. Judge Michael Snow said it would likely be “many months” before a full hearing was held on the U.S. extradition case. The judge set a procedural hearing for May 30, with a substantive hearing to follow on June 12 once a full U.S. extradition request has been received and studied by Assange’s lawyers. Legal experts predict it will likely take 18 months or longer to resolve the case, with each side able to make several appeals of unfavorable rulings. In a separate case, Assange, 47, was sentenced Wednesday to 50 weeks in prison in the U.K. for jumping bail in 2012 and holing up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. At the time, he was facing extradition to Sweden for questioning over rape and sexual assault allegations made by two women. JILL LAWLESS AND GREGORY KATZ (AP)

Fed pick Stephen Moore withdraws amid criticism

16-year-old migrant boy dies in federal custody

Trump eases safety rules for work at offshore wells

Stephen Moore, a conservative commentator whom President Trump had tapped for the Federal Reserve board, withdrew from consideration Thursday after losing Republican support in the Senate, largely over his past inflammatory writings about women. Trump tweeted the news of Moore’s withdrawal, only hours after Moore had told two news organizations that he was still seeking the board seat and had the White House’s support. In a note to Trump that he released later, Moore said the “unrelenting attacks on my character have become untenable for me and my family.” (AP)

A 16-year-old migrant boy from Guatemala fell ill after he was transferred to a government shelter in Texas and later died, officials said Wednesday. The boy crossed the border near El Paso, Texas, on April 19, and was taken to a shelter in Brownsville, Texas, a day later, according to Guatemala’s Foreign Ministry. The next morning, he had fever, chills and a headache and was taken to a hospital and released that day. When the teen didn’t recover, he was taken to a children’s hospital. Guatemalan officials said he had a severe infection in his brain and had emergency surgery, but never stabilized and died Tuesday. (AP)

The Trump administration moved Thursday to give oil and gas companies more flexibility in meeting safety requirements imposed after the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon explosion, which killed nearly a dozen people and was the worst offshore oil disaster in U.S. history. The revised rules, which govern safety standards at offshore wells, come as the administration pushes to expand drilling off the U.S. coast. Officials estimate the Trump administration revisions will save the oil industry over $1.5 billion over 10 years and preserves 80 percent of the Obama-era regulation. (AP)

200 players to boycott pro leagues

D.C. UNITED VS. COLUMBUS CREW | 8 P.M. SATURDAY, FLOSPORTS

In need of a home run MLS D.C. United wasted no time turning Audi Field into a fortress, going 12-2-1 at its new home last season, then opening 2019 with a pair of wins by a combined seven-goal margin. The club’s past three matches at Buzzard Point, however, have been far less fruitful: two losses, one draw and zero goals scored. “I don’t think that we feel right now that we’re in the right form [at home], the way that we were last year and the beginning of this year,” midfielder Paul Arriola said. Forward Wayne Rooney added: “We need to get back to being hard to beat, and resilient.” Sitting in a three-way tie atop the Eastern Conference, United (5-3-2) will look to reverse that skid on its upcoming two-game homestand, which kicks off with a visit from the Columbus Crew (4-5-1) on Saturday (8 p.m., FloSports). “Of course we want to win these games,” United coach Ben

Olsen said. “We’re at home. We want to reward our fans.” United’s struggles at Audi Field are all the more perplexing considering the team’s stellar form on the road, where D.C. has compiled a 3-1-1 record this season after notching just one away win all of last year. United grew accustomed to winning the possession battle at Audi Field, paving the way for the attacking duo of Rooney and Luciano Acosta to carve out scoring chances. But D.C. was outplayed in recent home losses to Los Angeles FC and New York City FC. The team’s limited time on the ball has stifled 2018 all-league selections Acosta and Rooney, who have yet to directly combine on a goal this season after doing so seven times in 20 matches together last year. “They obviously have to push and get better,” Olsen said. “We also have to support them around the field and have better performances, so that we don’t rely too heavily on them.” Absences also have contributed

Wayne Rooney will try to help end a threegame winless streak at Audi Field in the upcoming homestand.

to United’s home troubles. Injuries to left backs Joseph Mora (jaw) and Chris McCann (hamstring) have forced Olsen to juggle his

lineup, at times shifting from his usual 4-2-3-1 formation to a 3-42-1 alignment. Midfielder Russell Canouse (knee) has been sidelined during the recent home skid, and defender Leonardo Jara exited a 1-0 loss to Minnesota on Sunday with a groin injury. “You miss one or two [players], sometimes you’re just a little bit disjointed out there, and it’s not clicking as well as you want it to be,” Olsen said. “That’s part of a season, and we’re going through that right now. The way to fix that, and get away with being disjointed, is work and fight.”

More than 200 women’s hockey players have vowed not to compete in any North American league next season, hoping their stand leads to a single economically sustainable women’s hockey league. “We cannot make a sustainable living playing in the current state of the professional game,” the players said in a statement Thursday, noting the lack of health insurance and salaries that can be as low as $2,000 per season. Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, left, and Carli Lloyd were among 23 women named to a U.S. World Cup squad that is aiming to win consecutive global titles for the first time. Game Winner emerges as favorite with Baffert, a 5-time Derby winner

HORSE RACING Bob Baffert is feeling the pressure now. The five-time Kentucky Derby winner finds himself with new favorite Game Winner since Omaha Beach was scratched with a breathing problem. “Oh, boy, here we go,” the white-haired trainer said Thursday to a throng outside his Churchill Downs barn. “I think everybody is trying to jinx me. It’s still a very wide-open race.” The Derby could lose another horse, too. Haikal, a 30-1 shot trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, is being treated for an abscess in his left front foot. The Gotham Stakes winner didn’t train Thursday and soaked in Epsom salts to reduce the accumulation of pus in his infected foot. If Haikal can’t train again Friday, McLaughlin said, he would be out of the race. The deadline to scratch is Friday morning. Trump to give Woods medal in Rose Garden on Monday

Red Sox are told: No more ‘Fortnite’ in clubhouse

President Trump will present the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Tiger Woods next week. The White House said a ceremony will be held Monday in the Rose Garden. Woods overcame personal and professional adversity to win his fifth Masters last month — his first major victory in almost 11 years. The award is the nation’s highest honor for a civilian; presidents have wide discretion over whom to award it. (AP)

Multiple players told Boston’s WEEI that the Red Sox have removed the video game “Fortnite” from the clubhouse, believing it was “becoming counterproductive to putting their best foot forward on the field.” The Red Sox have struggled to start the season; they were 14-17 entering Thursday night’s game against the White Sox in Chicago. (TWP)

LB Derrick Johnson, 36, to sign one-day deal to retire with Chiefs

a horse that I’m worried about. He’s run faster than we have. Put the pressure on Jason, will you?” Over at his barn, Servis empathized with trainer Richard Mandella and 78-year-old owner Rick Porter, their Derby hopes dashed a day earlier when Omaha Beach was scratched. But Servis didn’t mind seeing Mike Smith knocked out of the race. The 53-year-old Hall of Famer is a crafty rider

who won a year ago with Justify. “I was really happy about that, especially having him outside of me,” Servis said. Baffert, 66, doesn’t really mind having the favorite. Alluding to his 2012 heart attack in Dubai, he assured onlookers he could handle the pressure. “I got three stents and they’re good,” he said, patting his chest with both hands. BETH HARRIS (AP)

“We have to go. We have to maybe start playing with a little bit more urgency.” CLOSER SEAN DOOLITTLE, on the challenge

facing the Nationals, who are fourth in the NL East entering a three-game series this weekend at Philadelphia. Their home game Thursday against St. Louis was delayed by rain and didn’t end by Express’ deadline.

Atletico Madrid will be opponent in MLS All-Star Game in Orlando

Big challenges await next GM of the Wizards NBA The Wizards’ next president of basketball operations will face a massive undertaking. The team has a lottery pick in an upcoming NBA draft flush with versatile wing players, a position Washington could use. The roster, with just five players available for the start of next season, must be filled out in free agency, which begins July 1. Compounding that matter, Washington already has roughly $90 million tied up in salary, which limits the money it can spend on adding quality players to surround two-time all-star Bradley Beal. These priorities immediately will land in the lap of the person picked to run the Wizards’ front office, and the direness of the situation might explain why the franchise has taken its time in tapping its next leader. The Wizards have asked to interview at least four prospective replacements for the fired Ernie Grunfeld. On Tuesday, a procession of candidates (Houston’s Gersson Rosas, Oklahoma City’s Troy Weaver and Danny Ferry) met with majority owner Ted Leonsis, above. However, Rosas will be hired as the next president of the Minnesota Timberwolves, according to multiple reports. In-house candidate Tommy Sheppard essentially has had a month-long interview during the time he has been running the day-to-day operations. CANDACE BUCKER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

The end: They’re not just movies. They’re us, too. Last week, I wrote about “Avengers: Endgame.” (Don’t worry, I’m still not going to spoil anything.) It’s the final movie I saw for this column. After nearly nine years of having the immense good fortune to occupy this space in Express each week, it’s time for me to move on. It seems appropriate, then, that The Reelist closes with the concluding chapter of a 22-movie arc that has stretched across my time here at the paper (and beyond). Beginning with “Thor,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe films have been the signposts that have marked my way. These movies will always have a special place in my heart — not only because they kicked off a month before my son was born (I saw “Iron Man” while HUGELY pregnant), but because they’re a good way to learn about film as a whole. Like every movie, each tells two stories — one that’s contained in the script, and one that’s unspoken but just as present. The MCU movies are, on the whole, super fun and entertaining. But underneath the stories of bravery and bad guys, they also have implications relating to, among other things, race and gender. Now come the cries of “Ugggggh, of COURSE

Kristen has to mention race and gender the last time I have to read her stupid column.” And it’s true — those topics have been recurring here. That’s not only because they interest me, but because they’re topics present in nearly every film. We just don’t usually pay attention to them because films so often reflect society’s norms. All six of the original cinematic Avengers are white, and all but one are male. That’s a reflection of the comic book canon, yes, but the comic book canon reflects common biases: Superheroes who are white and male are the norm. Superheroes who aren’t are the exception. It’s the same with movies of most genres. I hope my time writing here has made you laugh, at least a little. I hope it encouraged you to see a movie you wouldn’t otherwise have seen. I hope it made you happy that I got the picture from “Civil War” of Captain America clutching the helicopter into the paper five times (and if this column didn’t make it No. 6, I WAS SO QUITTING). But overall, I hope this column has encouraged you to see that a movie is never “just a movie.” Each one reflects or responds to society at large. That doesn’t mean you have to go into every film ready to write a doctoral thesis about its relationship to something larger; it just means I hope

that, from time to time, you look at what a movie is saying beyond the story it’s telling. Why did the Wakanda salute show up everywhere after “Black Panther” came out? Why did women roll their eyes in recognition when some guy smarmily told Captain Marvel to smile? Why did people leap out of their seats during “Endgame” when [redacted]? In the end, my main goal here was to make you aware that movies are so many things. They’re entertainment and they’re commentary. They build worlds and they build empathy. There is no artistic medium that reflects the history of America better than movies. Now our time together is over (I feel like I should make a “final reel” joke here, but that’s far too easy). Thanks for letting me into your brains once a week, and please remember two of my core beliefs: Pick up your popcorn bags and soda cups when you leave the theater, and PUT YOUR CELLPHONES AWAY. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

“The Intruder” stars Michael Ealy and Meagan Good as a young couple who move into their dream home in Napa Valley after chancing upon a seller: the mysterious retiree and widower played by Dennis Quaid. The only thrills, if that’s the right word (and it’s not) are jump scares that, for the most part, don’t work and don’t try very hard. The only mystery here is how this movie got made. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Ask Dr. Ruth’ Unrated, 100 min.

“Ask Dr. Ruth” is a winning profile of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, the 90-yearold author, sex therapist and media personality. For the most part, filmmaker Ryan White simply gets out of his subject’s way, letting her win you over with her sunny demeanor. Dr. Ruth’s message is an important one: However explicit the language, all she really wants is for no one to be lonely. PAT PADUA (TWP)

LIONSGATE

Chewbacca actor Mayhew dies at age 74

Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen play love interests who presumably bond over a mutual appreciation of hats.

‘Long Shot’ overplays suspension of disbelief The rom-com never escapes the trappings of male wish fulfillment FILM REVIEW “Long Shot,” a fantasy-fueled romantic comedy starring Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron, establishes its reality-adjacent ethos from the jump: In its tensely amusing opening scene, Rogen’s character, an investigative reporter named Fred Flarsky, has infiltrated a neo-Nazi group and is undergoing an initiation, giving halfhearted “Heil, Hitlers” and keeping the sarcastic patter going as he prepares to get a swastika tattoo. Welcome to the raucous, cheerfully preposterous world of “Long Shot,” where slapstick physical comedy, coarse sex jokes and amusingly on-point political commentary are expected to coexist as happily as the self-righteous, adamantly inelegant Fred and Charlotte Field, Theron’s pragmatic, sleekly fashionable secretary of state who falls in love with him.

You don’t have to suspend disbelief to enjoy “Long Shot.” You have to jettison it entirely, along with any sentimental attachments to archaic fundamentals such as sparkling dialogue, organic structure and genuine sexual chemistry. Directed by Jonathan Levine from a script by Dan Sterling and Liz Hannah, this is an awkward, uneven, occasionally very funny amalgamation of traditional rom-com tropes and the kind of sophomoric sight gags that have come to pass for comedy in recent years. Rogen’s Fred is the Cinderella in “Long Shot.” He has harbored a lifelong crush on Charlotte since

‘Long Shot’ (R, 125 min.) DIRECTOR: Jonathan Levine STARS: Seth Rogen, Charlize Theron, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Bob Odenkirk IN A NUTSHELL: A lovelorn journalist reunites with his former babysitter after she becomes the secretary of state and hires him to write speeches for her international tour.

she baby-sat him as a kid, and he can’t believe his good fortune when she hires him to punch up some speeches for an upcoming international tour. But unlike some of the laid-back dudes he’s played in Judd Apatow movies, here he’s the uptight one, expecting ideological purity from Charlotte while she tries to perfect the art of the possible while looking impeccable and not threatening her vapid boss, a TV star turned president played with deadpan smarminess by Bob Odenkirk. Despite its hit-or-miss satirical aspirations, “Long Shot” has none of the edgy, observational bravura of “Veep.” But the movie sneaks in as much side-eye as it can toward the perilously narrow knife-edge powerful women are expected to dance on as if no one is watching. Still, for its well-intentioned insights, “Long Shot” ultimately can’t escape its male wishfulfillment roots. “Long Shot” may not expect to be believed, but it still desperately wants to be laughed at — whatever it takes.

Peter Mayhew, known for playing Chewbacca in the original “Star Wars” trilogy, died Tuesday at his North Texas home, his family confirmed Thursday evening. He was 74 years old. The actor “put his heart and soul into the role of Chewbacca and it showed in every frame of the films from his knock kneed running, firing his bowcaster from the hip, his bright blue eyes, down to each subtle movement of his head and mouth,” his family wrote in a tweeted statement. “But, to him, the ‘Star Wars’ family meant so much more to him than a role in a film.” The 7-foot-2 actor reprised the role in 2015’s “The Force Awakens” before passing the torch to Joonas Suotamo. Elizabeth Banks to host “Press Your Luck” reboot on ABC

‘UglyDolls’ is a charming tale of inner beauty FILM REVIEW The line of UglyDolls — launched in 2001 — includes a wide variety of goofy-looking animal and (vaguely) humanoid characters. They are now, in all likelihood, for sale in a store near you. Based on David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim’s appealingly cockeyed characters, the “UglyDolls” movie begins in a place called Uglyville, where an outcast citizenry of misshapen and otherwise substandard dolls has been exiled, cut off from the love of children because of their perceived imperfections. And who cannot relate? There’s a whiff of counterculture energy and a message of love, despite the feeling at times that you are watching a commercial. Mostly, this is thanks to the appeal of the dolls themselves. Their un-slick appearance helps compensate for the fact that some of the main characters — Moxy, Ox and Ugly Dog — are voiced by pop stars Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton and Pitbull. Yes, “UglyDolls” is a musical, and the peppy songs, while devoid of any subtlety, help tell the story, and are delivered with sincerity. It’s hard to find fault with that, even if there are moments when the film’s critique of idealized beauty is obscured by packaging that is also, in the end, a kind of product pitch. UglyDolls are already adorable. You don’t have to work that hard to convince anyone. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

The week’s best movie previews

‘Sonic the Hedgehog’

‘Ophelia’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Nov. 8

EXPECTED RELEASE: June 28

SUMMARY: When Coolio wrote “Gangsta’s Paradise,” it was clear that he intended it to be used one day in the trailer for a movie based on a video game about a blue hedgehog who sprints everywhere. Said hedgehog must save the planet, which makes a lot of sense since it looks like humans aren’t going to do it. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Daisy Ridley takes a break from having the audacity to be in “Star Wars” movies while being a woman to star as the Shakespearean character who definitely has the worst boyfriend. There’s a lot of moody staring and ominous music, both of which suggest that our title character may not make it to the end of the film. K.P.K.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
