The winners are invited to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., for two days of workshops, and the winning team will receive a $4,000 stipend to cover expenses. Sharrieff, Skinner and Snell said in interviews Tuesday that they are excited about the positive attention their project has received from classmates, the D.C. community and even strangers on social media. “In the STEM field, we are underrepresented,” Sharrieff said, referring to the widely used acronym for the science, technology, engineering and math fields. “It’s important to be role models for a younger generation who want to be in the STEM field but don’t think they can.” Sharrieff, Snell and Skinner said they plan to go to college and pursue careers rooted in science. “The popular norm is sports and modeling and advertising,” Skinner said. “And for people to see our faces, and see we’re just regular girls, and we want to be scientists.” PERRY STEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The next stage of the science competition included public voting, and the Banneker High School students — Mikayla Sharrieff, India Skinner and Bria Snell, all 17-year-old high school juniors — turned to social media to promote their project. Redskins to look into cheerleader report

Father and son help catch escaped bees

REDSKINS Washington Redskins president Bruce Allen said Thursday the team is “looking into” troubling allegations former cheerleaders made to The New York Times about the treatment of cheerleaders at a 2013 calendar photo shoot in Costa Rica. In a statement, Allen said the team had spoken with “a number of” Redskins cheerleaders who provided accounts that “directly contradict” details in The Times’ story, which cited five cheerleaders present at the photo shoot who did not disclose their names because they had signed nondisclosure agreements. “The Redskins organization is very concerned by the allegations involving our cheerleaders in the recent New York Times article,” Allen said. “We are immediately looking into this situation and want to express how serious we take these allegations. … I can promise that once we have completed looking into this matter, if it is revealed that any of our employees acted inappropriately, those employees will face significant repercussions.” Allen continued: “Our entire organization has great appreciation and respect for our cheerleaders.”

Women say they were put in uneasy situation on 2013 Costa Rica trip

The New York Times reported Wednesday that Redskins cheerleaders were asked to be escorts for sponsors at a club during a 2013 trip to Costa Rica.

The Redskins came under fire Wednesday after The Times’ story revealed disturbing allegations about the way franchise officials have treated the team’s cheerleaders, with former cheerleaders saying the team made them vulnerable for the benefit of sponsors and big-spending ticket holders. The Times cited five former Redskins cheerleaders who described a 2013 photo shoot for a team calendar in Costa Rica. At the shoot, according to the report, male sponsors and suite holders observed cheerleaders posing topless or in body paint. After a 14-hour day of photos and dance practice, nine cheerleaders were asked to serve as personal escorts for the sponsors and suite holders at a nightclub. The arrangement did not include sex.

In a statement Thursday afternoon in response to specific questions, the NFL did not directly address the allegations against the Redskins or The Times’ story. “The NFL and all NFL member clubs support fair employment practices,” a spokesman said in an email. “Everyone who works in the NFL, including cheerleaders, has the right to work in a positive and respectful environment that is free from any and all forms of harassment and discrimination and fully complies with state and federal laws. Our office will work with our clubs in sharing best practices and employmentrelated processes that will support club cheerleading squads within an appropriate and supportive workplace.” ADAM KILGORE

Honeybees escaped from a tractor-trailer in which they were being hauled after a crash Wednesday afternoon involving several other vehicles along the Capital Beltway in Northern Virginia. As troopers were at the scene investigating, they were “suddenly swarmed by bees” and realized what the truck was hauling — pallets of honeybees. Two men who were driving by stopped at the scene. Police said the men, a father and son, “happened to be experienced bee handlers” and offered their help. State police said the two put on their beekeeper suits and caught most of the escaped bees. Officials said the truck driver was taken to a hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. The other drivers involved were not injured. (TWP)

Court: Ex-state senator’s name to stay on ballot Maryland’s highest court ruled that a disgraced former senator will remain on an upcoming primary ballot. Nearly half of Maryland’s crab houses have no workers due to a lack of visas.

Visa shortage hits Md. crab industry MARYLAND Nearly half of Maryland’s crab houses have no workers to pick crab meat after their mostly Mexican workers failed to get visas. The Baltimore Sun reports that the Trump administration for the first time awarded the visas in a lottery this year, instead of the usual first-come, first-served basis. The shortage hits just as crab season begins. Crab processors say it may cause the price of picked meat to spike, while lowering steamed crab prices. The Sun reports visa shortages are a regular industry issue, but crab house owners say this is the worst they’ve faced. Bill Seiling is director of the Chesapeake Bay Seafood Industries Association. He says Maryland’s 20 licensed crab processors typically employ about 500 foreign workers each season through the H-2B visa

program, which is for seasonal workers in non-agricultural jobs. He says about 200 of those visa applications were denied. Federal labor officials say there was an unprecedented demand for H-2B visas in January. About 81,000 applications were submitted when only 33,000 were available for work from April through September. The volume of requests prompted the lottery approach to the visa awards. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has written to the secretaries of homeland security and labor asking the federal government to “take immediate action” and raise the visa cap. The industry expects another lottery for 15,000 more visas to be announced this month. However, the Sun reports that a federal immigration agency spokesman says he has no information about whether more visas might be made available. (AP)

PHOENIX The Arizona governor signed a plan Thursday to give striking teachers a 20 percent pay raise, ending their six-day walkout after a dramatic all-night legislative session and sending more than a million public school students back to the classroom. Gov. Doug Ducey’s signature awarded teachers a 9 percent raise in the fall and 5 percent in each of the next two years. Those increases are in addition to a 1 percent raise granted last year. Teachers did not get everything they wanted, but they won substantial gains from reluctant lawmakers. “The educators have solved the education crisis! They’ve changed the course of Arizona,” Noah Karvelis of Arizona Educators United shouted to several thousand cheering teachers. “The change happens with us!” Hours after Ducey acted, strike organizers called for an end to the walkout. Most schools stayed closed Thursday, except for a handful that managed to reopen shortly after the pay raises passed. Some districts planned to reopen Friday, with others likely to resume classes next week. The Senate approved the raises just before dawn as hundreds of

red-shirted teachers followed the proceedings from the lobby. The night before, the teachers, who are among the lowest-paid in the country, held a candlelight vigil outside the Capitol building. Oklahoma teachers also won a raise and an increase in education funding, and Kentucky teachers successfully pushed back against pension reform that could have significantly reduced benefits, The Washington Post reported. Powerful rainstorm kills at least 91, injures over 160

A Connecticut woman’s call to police to report that she had escaped after being held hostage for several days led to a standoff and explosion in a barn behind her home that left one person dead and nine police officers injured, officials said Thursday. A regional police SWAT team responded to the property Wednesday and encountered a barricaded man. Officers negotiated with him for hours before a building on the property exploded. The remains of an unidentified person were found on the property, police said. The owners of the property were going through a divorce, according to court records. (AP)

Conroy, who had agreed to resign under pressure last month, sent Ryan a letter rescinding his resignation. Within hours, Ryan backed down and agreed to leave Conroy in his post at least through the end of the year, ending the possibility of what Ryan feared would be a “protracted fight” over what is supposed to be a unifying position in the partisan chamber. CRIME The number of deadly police shootings of unarmed people has generally declined since 2015 even as the tally of fatal shootings by law enforcement is on pace to hit nearly 1,000 for the fourth year in a row, according to data gathered by The Washington Post. Criminologists said the downturn in the number of cases and their own analysis of the data indicate that evidence of racial bias by police who shoot and kill unarmed blacks has also declined but not disappeared. “These trends mark significant changes,” said Geoff Alpert, a professor of criminology at the University of South Carolina. “What we don’t understand yet is what’s causing these numbers to move downward.” In 2015, police shot and killed 94 unarmed individuals, a number that fell to 51 in 2016 before rising to 68 in 2017. This year, police have shot and killed 18 so far, eight fewer than at the same time last year and the lowest in three years. Academics warn against overinterpreting the data relating to a decline of evidence of bias. The numbers are so small, they said, that even a few cases recorded in error could produce a different result. JOHN SULLIVAN, JULIE TATE

POLITICS He may have had a strategy, but Rudy Giuliani hatched it almost entirely in secret. The White House counsel had no idea. Neither did the White House chief of staff, nor the White House press secretary. They watched, agog, as Giuliani, the president’s recently installed personal attorney, freestyled Wednesday night on Fox News about the president’s legal troubles and unveiled an explosive new fact: that Trump reimbursed his longtime personal attorney, Michael Cohen, for the $130,000 paid to adult-film actress Stormy Daniels to ensure her silence about an alleged sexual encounter with Trump. Giuliani’s attempt to defuse a ticking time bomb exposed Trump’s failure to divulge the full story about the Daniels hush money and highlighted contradictory public statements from him and White House spokespeople. One month ago, Trump told reporters that he did not know about the payment to Daniels or where Cohen got the money to make it. Aides and advisers to the president expressed a mixture of exasperation and horror. One White House official texted a reporter a string of emoji characters in response, including a tiny container of popcorn. A second White House official, who like most others interviewed for this story spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive topic, said of the president, “His story is obviously not consistent anymore.” The episode was the latest convulsion for a White House that perpetually navigates turbulence. It has become standard operating procedure for Trump and his aides to deceive the public with false statements and

account. Cohen was averse to sharing this information publicly because he didn’t want to appear to be contradicting Trump’s denial in early April that he knew about the payment. But Trump’s sensitivity over the Daniels matter led Giuliani to be one of the only people fully read into the plan for the former mayor to attempt to swat away the matter on Fox News, a White House official said, leaving many other aides bewildered about what could come next. “Rudy and Trump are talking by phone, and others aren’t in the loop,” one senior White House official said. Asked about White House officials being caught off guard by his disclosure, Giuliani told CNN on Thursday: “They were. There was no way they wouldn’t be. The president is my client. I don’t talk to them.” PHILIP RUCKER,

27 more women accuse Rose of harassment Managers were warned of ex-host’s behavior at CBS, investigation finds MEDIA Incidents of sexual misconduct by Charlie Rose were far more numerous than previously known, according to a new investigation by The Washington Post, which also found three occasions over a period of 30 years in which CBS managers were warned of his conduct toward women at the network. An additional 27 women — 14 CBS News employees and 13 who worked with him elsewhere — said Rose sexually harassed them. Concerns about Rose’s behavior were flagged to managers at the network as early as 1986 and as recently as April 2017, when Rose was co-anchor of “CBS This Morning,” according to multiple people with firsthand knowledge of the conversations. Rose’s response to the new allegations was delivered in a one-sentence email: “Your story is unfair and inaccurate.” The new allegations follow a Post report last year on Rose’s behavior at his namesake PBS program, in which eight women accused him of making lewd phone calls, walking around naked in their presence or groping

nation+world Analysts say U.S., China meeting is not likely to yield breakthrough TECHNOLOGY Chinese and U.S. officials met face-to-face Thursday in an attempt to resolve a dispute over technology that has taken the countries the closest they’ve ever come to a trade war. Analysts say the officials appear unlikely to yield a breakthrough given the two sides’ rivalry in strategic technologies. U.S. Treasury Secretary

Steven Mnuchin is leading the group, which includes Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer. Liu He, President Xi Jinping’s top economic adviser, headed the Chinese side in the talks, expected to end Friday. The dispute has deepened as China has stepped up efforts to overtake western industry leaders in advanced technologies. THREE POINTERS

Redskins’ long shots

RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU

Bet on Hofburg: Mott’s colt can win Kentucky Derby simple. When spring finally dawns at Churchill Downs, and 3-year-old thoroughbreds compete in Louisville for Saturday’s 144th Run for the Roses, the fun is as much about the overflowing crowd of 150,000 sipping mint juleps — wearing oversized hats and mingling with celebrities — as it is about picking a winner. But, ultimately, the best way to enjoy the race is to bet right. Late broadcasting mogul John Kluge, perhaps the richest man in America in the 1980s before technology redefined wealth, would bet $2 on the Derby. The fun was in picking winners, he said, not winning money. Winning $5,000 on a $2 exacta wager — picking the first- and second-place horses in order — wouldn’t change a billionaire’s life, but this year’s race has the potential for big money to everyday folks. Hofburg is an early 20-1 long shot that can steal this race at the wire, when viewers hearts pound so hard the roar of the surrounding crowd falls quiet. With fellow long shot My Boy Jack right behind at 30-1, coupling the pair could lead to a four-figure exacta and maybe a

six-figure superfecta — getting the top four finishers correct in order — if favorites don’t sneak in. Justify is the early favorite at 3-1, thanks in large part to trainer Bob Baffert, a whitehaired Californian who’s already produced four Derby champions. Justify has won all three races he entered this year, including a dominant showing in the Santa Anita Derby on April 7, when he beat Bolt d’Oro by three lengths. But Justify could be worn down early by fellow speedsters and have nothing left in his tank for the turn home. The crowd will roar, but it won’t be for him. Trainer Todd Pletcher has four entrants, including contenders Magnum Moon and Audible, but he’s not a smart pick, either. Pletcher won the Derby last year with Always Dreaming and in 2010 with Super Saver, but this year’s crew drew poor positions in the starting gate, where this race could be decided early because of the oversized 20-horse field. The Derby sometimes favors long-suffering trainers overdue for the spotlight. This time, the racing gods should reward Hall of Famer Bill Mott, probably the best trainer you never heard of, and the man behind Hofburg. Mott has won dozens of major races, but never finished better than

eighth in the Derby over seven tries. He hasn’t even entered since 2009. Hofburg, the runner-up in the Florida Derby in March, sports a similar résumé to 2008 Derby winner Big Brown, who won from a far outside post and had only raced three times previously. If his Sunday workout is any indication, Hofburg is ready for the big stage. “He looked smooth as silk coming by me,” Mott said then. Hofburg’s superb training shows that he can rally from far back and win in the final steps over My Boy Jack, with Vino Rosso third and Mendelssohn fourth. Hofburg isn’t the best horse in the field, but he may finish first Saturday.

Sweep puts Nats back at .500 Club wins fifth straight as Hellickson thrives, Zimmerman homers WASHINGTONPOST.COM SOCCER INSIDER

JONATHAN NEWTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

NATIONALS 3, PIRATES 1 Jeremy Hellickson saw his manager step out of the dugout and knew his fate immediately. He was at the mercy of the numbers on Dave Martinez’s work sheet, which meant it was time to take his starting pitcher out. Even in a scoreless game with two outs in the sixth. Even with Hellickson at just 61 pitches. The Nationals’ skipper was not sparing feelings. For the second time in five days, Martinez pulled Hellickson instead of risking a third trip through the opposing lineup. This time, in a game Martinez managed as if it were October, it worked. The Nats beat the Pirates 3-1 on Thursday in Washington. This time, Sammy Solis came in to get the third out and the Nationals tacked on three runs in the bottom of the frame on a pair a home runs from Trea Turner and Ryan Zimmerman. This time, Sean Doolittle converted his first five-out save since September 2015, and the Nationals (16-16) emerged with a four-game series sweep of the Pirates (17-15) and a season-best five-game win streak to reach .500 again.

Manager Dave Martinez, right, made sharp moves to switch pitchers in the sixth and let Sean Doolittle go five outs.

“After the game, I gave him a big hug,” Martinez said of Hellickson. “I said, ‘Keep us in the game. That’s all I ask.’ ” Thursday was Hellickson’s first start since he was removed with one out in the sixth inning of a 2-2 game against Arizona despite having thrown just 57 pitches. Entering Thursday, Hellickson had limited batters this year to a .491 OPS his first time through the lineup and a still good .696 the second time but an abysmal 1.911

Dallas TE Witten retires, takes job as ESPN analyst

Julio Teheran took a no-hit bid into the seventh, Ronald Acuna Jr. hit his second MLB homer and the visiting Braves routed the Mets 11-0 on Thursday to complete a three-game sweep that vaulted them 1½ games ahead of New York in the NL East lead. The Braves (19-11) outscored the Mets (17-12) in the series 21-2 and extended their win streak to five. Asdrubal Cabrera broke up the no-hitter with a double. (AP)

Jason Witten is retiring after 15 years with the Cowboys and taking a job as an analyst on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football,” he announced Thursday, just days from his 36th birthday. He exits with franchise records in games (239), catches (1,152) and yards receiving (12,448). Witten and Tony Gonzalez are the only NFL tight ends with at least 1,000 catches and 10,000 yards. (AP)

the third time. The Nationals’ approach with Hellickson is why they slotted him in the rotation behind Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg. Theoretically, the team’s bullpen is at its freshest the day after the two All-Star right-handers pitch. Hellickson plowed through five innings again Thursday. He turned a double play with a runner stealing. He nibbled the corners with a 90-mph fastball and coaxed whiffs with a 78-mph

curveball. He allowed three hits, no walks and no runs. “He doesn’t make many mistakes,” Zimmerman said. Brandon Kintzler worked a scoreless seventh, but Ryan Madson labored in the eighth, departing with one out and the bases loaded after Howie Kendrick booted a tailor-made double-play ball. Doolittle allowed one run to score on a fielder’s choice, then retired four straight. JORGE CASTILLO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

D.C. United will log 19,539 miles over 8 matches D.C. United played the first of eight consecutive away matches last Saturday, but compared with what awaits, the trip to greater Philadelphia was a short stroll. Before Audi Field opens July 14, United will visit, in order, Salt Lake City, San Jose, Los Angeles, Seattle, Toronto, Boston and L.A. again. That’s four matches in the Pacific time zone, one in the Mountain and two in the Eastern. MLS’s World Cup break (June 14-29) will provide some relief. And in the week between San Jose and the first L.A. stop, the team plans to stay in California. Overall, United will log 19,539 air miles, beginning with the May 12 match at Real Salt Lake and concluding with the July 4 game at the L.A. Galaxy. Before the 2½-hour bus trip to Philadelphia for a 3-2 defeat, United (1-4-2) had already played road games at Orlando, Atlanta, Columbus and Kansas City. The eight-game away stretch is tied for the second longest in league history, trailing Sporting Kansas City’s 10 in 2011. For competitive balance, all MLS teams must fly commercial, with four exceptions allowed per season. In case of travel disruptions, the league will arrange — and pay for — a charter. That occurred to United on opening weekend when heavy winds grounded many flights in Washington. United is 0-7-2 on the road since a win at Colorado in August. STEVEN GOFF

FOCUS FEATURES

Marlo (Charlize Theron) takes a breather, just in case it’s the last one she ever gets to take.

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Heavy duty: ‘Tully’ nails the grind of a drowning mom The labor scene in “Tully” is quick. It’s a minute, maybe a minute and a half. Push, push, baby cry, yay! Oh, wait. Sorry. That’s the childbirth scene in “Tully.” The labor lasts the entire movie. For many women, it lasts our entire lives. After her baby is born, Marlo (Charlize Theron), now the mother of three young children, reluctantly accepts the gift of Tully, a night nanny (Mackenzie Davis) paid for by her brother. (Tully handles some of the late-night duties that most moms do on their own while wishing their snoring partners would suffocate in their sleep.) Writer Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman, who teamed up for “Juno” and

“Young Adult,” haven’t lost their knack for unflinching but caring looks at difficult situations, and Theron is unflinchingly real in a depiction of motherhood we don’t often see, even though many women are living it. While men as a whole have come so far in terms of child rearing and doing their share of household work instead of “helping” with it, there is still a huge disparity in terms of keeping a household running. (I’m framing this in the context of straight relationships; I have no idea if and how samesex couples face this issue.) It’s wonderful if a dad changes all the diapers — but who notices when the diapers are running low, then puts “diapers” on the shopping list, then goes to Target and picks up not only the diapers, but the pacifiers

TBS to cut “Conan” to half-hour in 2019

the baby likes because the dog ate one oh and we’re also low on cereal and toothpaste and the older kid needs colored pencils for her science fair project which means it’s time to head to Michaels and get one of those science fair project board things? Marlo’s experiences capture how handling the daily minutiae of running a household can feel like water torture, and how adding an infant increases the drip-drip-drip of piano lessons and dental appointments and permission slips. Her husband, Drew (Ron Livingston), is clearly involved; he packs the kids’ lunches and supervises their homework, genuine contributions to the household. And it’s clear he’d do more if Marlo asked. It’s just that asking can feel like failing; asking for help getting a “real” dinner on the table means admitting

STARS: Charlize Theron, Mackenzie Davis, Mark Duplass, Ron Livingston

you can’t get a real dinner on the table, so it’s frozen pizza again. (Marlo also puts some microwaved broccoli out. To serve just pizza would make her a bad mom.) Drew wants to help, but hesitates because he assumes this is her territory and presumably doesn’t want to intrude. It’s as though he can see that Marlo might be drowning, but he’s waiting for her to ask him to toss her the life preserver. There is a reason the school nurse calls Marlo’s cellphone first when it’s time to discuss her son’s behavior in school — and there’s a reason she listed her number first on the emergency contact list, and it’s the same reason she was probably the one filling out the emergency contact form in the first place. How much of women’s work is assumed, rather than asked for, is at the center of “Tully.” And since we’re not asked to do these jobs, we have no chance to say no. “Tully” is, in part, about what happens when a mom’s burden gets lifted just a little. What it really gets right is how heavy that burden is in the first place.

IN A NUTSHELL: A struggling mother of three comes to form a unique bond with a young night nanny.

“Black Panther,” “Stranger Things” lead MTV Movie & TV Award nominations

The notion of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the diminutive and soft-spoken Supreme Court justice, as a judicial “rock star” may seem a strange one. But the lively and thorough profile painted by directors Julie Cohen and Betsy West in the documentary “RBG” — during which she is described in just those terms — makes a persuasive argument for that characterization. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘The Judge’ Unrated, 76 min.

What’s it like being one of the first female judges to serve in an Islamic court of law? That’s the subject of the inspiring documentary “The Judge,” an intimate profile of Kholoud al-Faqih, who in 2009 was one of two women appointed to preside over sharia courts in the West Bank — becoming the first in that role in the Palestinian territories. Flipping the gender script

FILM REVIEW

‘Disobedience’ navigates pain of repression

This weekend, Garry Marshall’s 1987 hit “Overboard,” starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, is being revisited, with Eugenio Derbez as the spoiled millionaire and Anna Faris as a single mom who cleans his boat. “Overboard” is a fitting choice for a gender swap, since the plot is a switcheroo — after waking up with amnesia, the heir/heiress lives the life of a pauper — which is itself an inversion of the

PARAMOUNT PICTURES

rags-to-riches trope. With that in mind, three filmmakers share which gender swaps they want to see next. JANE BORDEN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Grumpy Old Men’

‘West Side Story’

‘Jackass: The Movie’

Filmmaker pitching: Kay Cannon, “Pitch Perfect” and “30 Rock” writer, “Blockers” director

Filmmaker pitching: Justin Simien, writerdirector of “Dear White People”

Filmmaker pitching: Diablo Cody, writer of “Juno” and the new movie “Tully”

Remake pitch: “Grumpy Old Men” (1993), retitled “Grumpy Old Women.”

Remake pitch: “West Side Story” (1961), as a gay romance, with Maria as Mario or Tony as Toni.

Remake pitch: “Jackass: The Movie” (2002), with a female cast.

Original plot: A mutual love interest reignites the rivalry between two elderly, curmudgeonly neighbors.

Original plot: A New York City gang member falls in love with a rival gang member’s sister.

Original plot: In a film based on the MTV show, a bunch of fearless dudes do anything for a laugh.

New cast: If it’s Maria and Toni: Samira Wiley and Janelle Monae.

New cast: Stuntwomen.

New cast: Helen Mirren and Judi Dench, with George Clooney in the Ann-Margret role. The gender swap’s effect: “It would be great to have the ladies mad about the fact that in the ’70s they burned their bras and fought the fight for equality of women — and now find themselves having to fight all over again. . . . ‘What a waste of our lives!’ ”

The gender swap’s effect: “A lot of people think gay history sort of begins in the ’70s, but of course gay people have always been there, living complicated and secret, compartmentalized lives. Wouldn’t it up the tension if it’s not just a star-crossed love affair between two families, but if the love itself is totally forbidden?”

The gender swap’s effect: “If you see a man electrocute his genitalia on purpose, people are like, ‘This is hilarious.’ If a woman did the same thing, people would be like, ‘That is a psychotic whore who is self-harming and has psychological issues.’ Women’s bodies are regarded as deadly serious. … I would love to see women also have opportunities to be complete clowns.”

Are you having money and relationship problems?

The third female-centric drama from Chilean director Sebastian Lelio, “Disobedience” stars Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams as women whose lust creates conflict in an ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. All three of these movies pit strong female protagonists against societal hostility, but with very different tones. Taking its cues from the religious severity of the London community in which it’s set, Lelio’s latest film is austere, deliberate and rather chilly.

EXPECTED RELEASE: May 18

EXPECTED RELEASE: Sept. 14

SUMMARY: Four women of (cough, cough) a certain age decide to make their book club’s next selection “Fifty Shades of Grey because they think it’ll be fun, when in fact it is a terrible book. Still, it encourages them to get out and live a little. Because anything is better than staying in and reading “Fifty Shades of Grey. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Wow. If any upcoming ads for this start with “from the director of ‘Bridesmaids,’  people are going to be very confused. But Paul Feig did direct this mystery or maybe thriller or possibly a crime drama about a woman (Blake Lively) who goes missing, and a friend (Anna Kendrick) who thinks there’s more happening than anyone knows. @SYLARENEE, recounting to amazed Twitter followers how she ended up getting multiple photos with actor Michael B. Jordan. The Temple University student had heard the star was filming a movie on campus. Taking a cue from the hot weather, Sylvia Wilson messaged Jordan on Instagram, asking if she could buy him a smoothie. Jordan replied that she didn’t have to and that he would happily take pictures with her and her friends. Fans called the move “pulling a Sylvia,” while others noted the two made a cute couple.

DIFFICULT

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You must not vacillate today; you must be willing to stick to your guns and challenge anyone who would challenge you. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) A certain task may require a little extra effort, but you are able to give it — and then some. Indeed, this may prove a banner day for you. CANCER (June 21-July 22) While the insults are flying, you’ll want to steer clear. You must not get yourself mixed up in anything so pointless at this time. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may not understand someone else’s approach, but you can appreciate that he or she is doing what can be done. It’s time to join forces, perhaps. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You’ve been missing something that, once found, will prove quite important to you. A friend has words for you, and you may be surprised.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You cannot do it all yourself — nor should you. Today, you must be patient while you allow others to do their jobs as assigned. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) It’s a good time for you to show someone else how it’s done — and you can do so without seeming to be cocky or fishing for praise.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You can try something that you’ve not tried before, but you mustn’t expect to be successful the first time. You must put in some practice.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
