Police say a man slugged a worker who caught him stuffing a bar of soap down his pants at a New York City pharmacy. NYPD released video Saturday of the person in the April 1 incident and asked for help tracking him down. Police said the soap swiper fled after punching the worker in the face several times at Rite Choice Pharmacy in the Bronx. The worker suffered abrasions to his face. The thief got away with a $5.29 bar of Cetaphil soap. (AP)
A wild raccoon has moved into Heidelberg Zoo in Germany and keepers can’t kick him out. German daily Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung reported Friday that zoo staff recently discovered the uninvited guest in the raccoon enclosure, where he seemed to be getting along fine with the seven original residents. The interloper, nicknamed Fred, can expect free board and lodgings for life, because EU rules forbid him from being released back into the wild. (AP)
A pair of Florida teens had their prayers answered after they were stranded 2 miles from shore. Tyler Smith and Heather Brown, both 17, were swimming at Vilano Beach near St. Augustine last month when strong currents pulled them out to sea. The Christ’s Church Academy students said they were holding onto each other and praying to God for help just before Captain Eric Wagner and his crew spotted them. The boat was called the Amen. (AP)

Frisbee team’s sizable foe COLLEGE PARK, MD. At Cole Field House last week, the Maryland men’s basketball team relied on its length, a zone defense and solid passes from Anthony Cowan Jr., who naturally was the go-to facilitator. But a turf field replaced the hardwood at the muggy but beloved gym where the Terps played basketball games for decades, and the opponent was the women’s club ultimate Frisbee team. The club team had experience and knowledge of the game, but the basketball players had all the height and the dominant edge in athleticism. So after the basketball team climbed a few steps up the learning curve, it won by a few points in the loosely scored game — a far better result than last week’s dodgeball contest, the first of three Campus Challenge events pitting the basketball team against university club teams. In the game of ultimate, as the sport is commonly called, celebratory dances followed what the basketball team inaccurately described as touchdowns. Confident

declarations arose postgame: “That’s the second Campus Challenge I’ve been great at,” freshman forward Jalen Smith said. Early on, the basketball players misjudged the trajectories of the disc, sending their long bodies flailing upward as it swerved in a different direction. Even when they found the right spots, sometimes the disc would slip through their hands. Then they started to find their roles. The 6-foot-10 Smith and 6-9 Joshua Tomaic would double-team

the club player who had the disc. They communicated with basketball terminology. Cowan, who had previously played with a Frisbee only at the beach, started slinging long passes down the field. “Ant’s really good,” Aaron Wiggins said. “He’s our quarterback. He’s the best passer.” Cowan became the clear MVP, with Reese Mona another standout, according to the basketball team and Christin Cohee, one of the women’s ultimate captains. For the ultimate team, just playing the game was the highlight. Some know the basketball players by name and go to games. Cohee texted her parents beforehand, telling them she was about to play the basketball team. Her mom responded, “So fun! But don’t hurt them.” The Campus Challenge, which will conclude with a match Tuesday against the women’s volleyball team, helps the basketball players feel more connected to the student body, freshman guard Eric Ayala said. The players embraced the game as an enjoyable offseason activity, but competitiveness wins out. Cowan never subbed out, saying, “I needed to make sure we won.” EMILY GIAMBALVO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

What’s it like to fact-check a political film? As a Washington Post journalist turned State Department official, Jonathan Finer landed the gig of political consultant to the newly released rom-com “Long Shot.” We asked him what it was like to work on that film. (TWP) How did you approach your fact-checking? I saw the goal as being that the ridiculous things would be intentional instead of things that are very easy to get wrong. … Of course, I know that a secretary of state wouldn’t go on a drug-fueled bender … but I thought about what it might look like if she did. What kind of changes did you suggest? One early version of the script had the secretary of state meeting with the governor of Puerto Rico, and I told them that that wouldn’t take place because … the secretary of state usually deals with foreign leaders. What was Charlize Theron like? She has an aura of — there not being any doubt that she’s a movie star.

‘We need all kinds of change’ BALTIMORE Baltimore’s new mayor has vowed to clean up the city after being thrust into office by his predecessor’s resignation amid corruption investigations, but he inherits serious, long-standing problems that have plagued previous administrations. Bernard “Jack” Young, a longtime leader of the City Council, says he intends to serve only the remainder of former Mayor Catherine Pugh’s term and has no interest in running in 2020. “I wish him good luck, but I’m reserving my full support because he seems apprehensive about being the mayor in the
first place,” said Clayton “Mr. C” Guyton, a community organizer. Young had been Baltimore’s interim leader since April 2, when Pugh departed on an indefinite leave for what her lawyer has said was poor health after a bout of pneumonia. Pugh stepped down a month later, mired in a scandal that’s put her in the crosshairs of federal, state and city investigators trying to unravel the murky financial arrangements of her self-published children’s books. “Baltimore deserves a mayor who can move our great city forward,” Pugh said in a written statement read by her lawyer. After the upheaval, Baltimore residents say they hope Young might at least continue to be a steady hand. “I’m just hoping he’s got a better understanding of how to fix
Thursday, Baltimore city employees pulled down her portraits and updated websites as the city shifts into a new era under Young. Young told The Associated
Press he’s ready to make changes and is focused on reducing one of the country’s highest rates of violent crime and tidying up the city’s streets. He aims to bring more investments and jobs, particularly to its most deeply disenfranchised neighborhoods. “I’m determined to make a dent. I’m not a placeholder — I’m the mayor now. And I’m going to run the city like the mayor,” Young said. Pugh is the second Baltimore mayor in less than a decade to step down because of scandal. She came to office contrasting her clean image with her main opponent, former Mayor Sheila Dixon, who was forced to depart office in 2010 as part of a plea deal for misappropriating about $500 in gift cards meant for needy families. A once-common farm pesticide may be to blame for dozens of bald eagles poisoned over the past three years in Maryland and Delaware. The Baltimore Sun reported that U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service data show pesticides were a suspected or confirmed factor in about 50 deaths of the national bird between 2008 and 2017. A Maryland Natural Resources spokesman said the illegal chemical carbofuran killed some of the birds. (AP) BALTIMORE

We’re reducing our methane emissions by 50%. To lower our carbon footprint and yours. At Dominion Energy, we’re finding innovative ways to put natural gas to work to help build a sustainable energy future. We’re re-tooling our natural gas infrastructure to deliver on-demand power to help complement our use of wind and solar. And in areas where pipelines can’t reach, we’re pioneering modular liquefied natural gas to bring clean energy to areas dependent on carbon-heavy oil. We’re even harnessing methane from pig farms as a cleaner source of renewable energy and using it to power homes. Fewer greenhouse gases, a lower carbon footprint and cleaner air make natural gas a natural choice.

TRANSPORTATION The Washington region’s House members renewed an effort to extend and double Metro’s federal subsidy Friday, hoping that the measure would receive a more positive reception now that Democrats control the chamber. The nine members filed a bill that is almost identical to one proposed last year by area Democrats during the previous Republican-led Congress, where it never gained traction. It would double the federal
grant to Metro from $150 million a year to $300 million, on the condition that the agency strengthen its Office of the Inspector General and meet performance targets, such as those for safety and cost efficiency. The bill is more generous than one that the region’s four U.S. senators are about to file. The planned Senate measure would raise federal dedicated funding to $200 million a year, on the condition that the agency adopt certain oversight and safety measures. Both bills would extend the 10-year-old federal subsidy that Metro has used for capital expenses such as rail cars and other equipment. Metro gets the money

The law authorizing the subsidy expired in October, and Metro recently received its last allocation of funding under the measure. Rep. Gerald Connolly, D-Va., the House bill’s lead sponsor, called the federal government “the single biggest beneficiary of Metro” and noted that D.C., Virginia and Maryland agreed last year to give Metro $500 million a year in new dedicated funding. “The local jurisdictions are stepping up their investments. … Now the federal government must demonstrate a similar commitment to our nation’s transit system,” Connolly said. Police in Maryland said divers found a helicopter that crashed into the Chesapeake Bay, and recovered the bodies of both people on board from the battered cockpit about 55 feet below the surface. Maryland Natural Resources Police and Maryland State Police divers recovered the bodies Saturday night off Kent Island’s Bloody Point, about 20 miles southeast of Annapolis. Authorities identified the pilot as Charles Knight, 38, of Mount Airy, Md., and the passenger as Matt Clark, 36, of Pasadena, Md. Two members of a white supremacist group pleaded guilty Friday to federal rioting charges in connection with a 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville and political rallies in California. Benjamin Drake Daley, 26, of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Michael Paul Miselis, 30, of Lawndale, Calif., each pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy to riot. Daley and Miselis are the last of four members of the Rise Above Movement indicted in Virginia to plead guilty. Each man faces up to five years in prison, but defendants often get less than the maximum under federal sentencing guidelines. (AP)

Israel-Gaza shelling grows
UA STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS VIA AP
Gaza militants and Israel began trading rocket fire Saturday.
MAHMUD HAMS (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)
JERUSALEM Gaza militants fired hundreds of rockets into southern Israel on Sunday, killing at least four Israelis and bringing life to a standstill across the region in the bloodiest fighting since a 2014 war. As Israel pounded Gaza with airstrikes, the Palestinian death toll rose to 23, including two pregnant women and two babies. The bloodshed marked the first Israeli fatalities from rocket fire since the 2014 war. With Palestinian militants threatening to send rockets deeper into Israel and Israeli reinforcements massing near the Gaza frontier, the fighting showed no signs of slowing down. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spent most of the day huddled with his Security Cabinet. Late Sunday, the Cabinet instructed the army to “continue its attacks and to stand by” for further orders. Israel also claimed to have killed a Hamas commander involved in transferring Iranian funds to the group. Israel and Hamas, an Islamic militant group that seeks Israel’s destruction, have fought three wars since Hamas violently seized control of Gaza from Western-backed Palestinian forces in 2007. They have fought numerous smaller battles, most recently two rounds in March. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh

said in a statement late Sunday that the militant group was “not interested in a new war.” He signaled readiness to “return to the state of calm” if Israel stopped its attacks “and immediately starts implementing understandings about a dignified life.” With little to lose, Hamas appears to be trying to step up
pressure on Netanyahu at a time when the Israeli leader is vulnerable on several fronts. Fresh off an election victory, Netanyahu is now engaged in negotiations with his hard-line political partners on forming a governing coalition. If fighting drags on, the normally cautious Netanyahu could be weakened in
his negotiations as his partners push for a tougher response. But Hamas is also taking a big risk if it pushes too hard. During the 50-day war in 2014, Israel killed over 2,200 Palestinians, over half of them civilians, according to U.N. tallies, and caused widespread damage to homes and infrastructure. The Gazan public has little stomach for another devastating war. In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Israelis have “every right to defend themselves.” He expressed hope that the recent cease-fire could be restored. On Friday, two Israeli soldiers were wounded by snipers from Islamic Jihad, a smaller, Iranianbacked militant group that often cooperates with Hamas but sometimes acts independently. Israel responded by killing two Palestinian militants, leading to intense rocket barrages and retaliatory Israeli airstrikes beginning Saturday. By Sunday, the Israeli military said militants had fired over 600 rockets, with the vast majority falling in open areas or intercepted by the Iron Dome rocketdefense system. But more than 30 rockets managed to strike urban areas, the army said. The Israeli military said it struck 250 targets in Gaza, including weapons storage, attack tunnels and rocket launching and production facilities. It also deployed tanks and infantry forces to the Gaza frontier, and put another brigade on standby. JOSEF FEDERMAN AND FARES AKRAM (AP)

At least 40 dead in fiery landing of Russian plane MOSCOW At least 40 people died when an Aeroflot airliner burst into flames while making an emergency landing at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport Sunday evening, officials said. The Sukhoi SSJ100 operated by national airline Aeroflot had 73 passengers and five crew members on board when it touched down and sped down a runway spewing huge flames and black smoke. Elena Markovskaya, a spokeswoman for Russia’s Investigative Committee, said early Monday that 41 people were killed. But Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova said later that 38 survived, implying the death toll was 40. Video showed desperate passengers leaping out of the plane onto inflatable evacuation slides and staggering across the airport’s tarmac and grass, some holding luggage. The airport said in a statement that the plane, which had taken off from Sheremetyevo Airport for the northern city of Murmansk, turned back for unspecified technical reasons and made a hard landing that started the fire. Video broadcast later on Russian television showed flames bursting from the jetliner’s underside as it landed and then bounced. The plane apparently did not have time to jettison fuel before the emergency landing, news reports said. JIM HEINTZ (AP)

Stretch of road named after former President Obama
Cyclone Fani roared ashore Friday in India’s eastern Odisha state, bringing pounding rain, giant waves and wind speeds up to 155 mph, but leaving just three dead after authorities evacuated more than 1.1 million people. Fani crossed over India’s West Bengal state on Saturday and moved northeast toward Bangladesh, where at least a dozen people were confirmed dead. Officials cautioned that death tolls could rise as communications were restored. India’s relatively low casualty count demonstrates its improved disaster readiness since 1999, when a “super” cyclone killed around 10,000 people.
Minneapolis will pay $20 million to the family of an unarmed woman shot by a police officer in 2017 after she called 911 to report a possible crime, city leaders said Friday — just three days after the former officer was convicted of murder. The settlement reached with the family of Justine Ruszczyk Damond, a dual citizen of the U.S. and Australia, is believed to be the largest stemming from police violence in Minnesota. Mohamed Noor is thought to be the first Minnesota officer convicted of murder for an on-duty shooting. An attorney for Damond’s family in Australia called the settlement amount “transformational.” (AP)

Kim oversees missile firing drills Trump reverses, says Mueller shouldn’t testify WASHINGTON President Trump said Sunday that special counsel Robert Mueller should not testify before Congress, abandoning his previous declaration that he would leave that decision to Attorney General William Barr. Escalating tensions with House Democrats as they seek to bring Mueller before the House Judiciary Committee, Trump tweeted: “No redos for the Dems.” He added: “Are they looking for a redo because they hated seeing the strong NO COLLUSION conclusion?” Democrats are seeking more information about Mueller’s report on his Russia investigation. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office last week that testimony from Mueller was “up to our attorney general.” Barr has said he has no objection to Mueller testifying. The president tweeted after a Democrat on the committee said he was hopeful Mueller would testify, noting that May 15 has been proposed. Rhode Island Rep. David Cicilline told “Fox News Sunday” that “we hope the special counsel will appear” at that time and that “we think the American people have a right to hear directly from him.” Spokespeople for the Justice Department and Mueller declined to comment on Cicilline’s remarks, and Mueller’s spokesman declined to comment on Trump’s tweet. NORTH KOREA North Korean state media on Sunday showed leader Kim Jong Un observing live-fire drills of long-range multiple rocket launchers and what appeared to be a new short-range ballistic missile, a day after South Korea expressed concern that the launches were a violation of an inter-Korean agreement to cease all hostile acts. Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency said Kim expressed “great satisfaction”

over Saturday’s drills and stressed that his front-line troops should keep a “high alert posture” and enhance combat ability to “defend the political sovereignty and economic
self-sustenance of the country.” The weapons launches were a likely sign of Pyongyang’s growing frustration at stalled talks with Washington meant to provide coveted sanctions relief in return
for nuclear disarmament. They also highlighted the fragility of the detente between the Koreas. South Korea said it’s “very concerned” about the launches, calling them a violation of the agreement to reduce animosities between the countries. The statement, issued after an emergency meeting Saturday of top officials at the presidential Blue House in Seoul, urged North Korea to stop committing acts that would raise military tensions and to join efforts to resume nuclear diplomacy. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday stressed that Washington still wants to strike a deal with Kim to get North Korea to denuclearize. KIM TONG-HYUNG (AP)

Trump taps former chief of border patrol to lead ICE President Trump announced Sunday that he has chosen Mark Morgan to head U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Morgan is a former border patrol chief under the Obama administration who has publicly backed the president’s border wall. nation+world ELECTION 2020
Democrats’ field of dreamers
The sprawling Democratic field includes 21 candidates and counting (Bill de Blasio, we’re looking at you). The list ranges in age, from 37 to 77, and political ideology, from liberals to moderates. There are senators, governors and mayors — and an unprecedented number of women and minorities. Here’s a breakdown of the entire group, categorized by the amount of support received in a Washington Post-ABC News poll of Democratic-leaning adults that was conducted in mid-April. More than half of those surveyed didn’t volunteer a name when asked who they would vote for if their primary or caucus were held today. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP/EXPRESS) THE EARLY FAVORITES Here are the candidates who were mentioned by at least 3% of people surveyed in the Post-ABC poll.
Joe Biden Age: 76 Best known for: Being former President Barack Obama’s vice president from 2009 to 2017 and U.S. senator from Delaware from 1973 to 2009. Biggest strength: He’s well-known nationally and popular in some places Democrats have lost recently, such as workingclass swing states Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, his birthplace. Biggest weakness: He would be the oldest person ever elected president. He also tends to commit verbal gaffes and has recently faced accusations by some women of uninvited, though nonsexual, touching.
Bernie Sanders
Pete Buttigieg
Kamala Harris
Elizabeth Warren
Beto O’Rourke
Age: 77
Age: 37
Age: 54
Age: 69
Age: 46
Best known for: Running a 2016 presidential primary campaign against Hillary Clinton that laid the groundwork for the leftward lurch that has dominated Democratic politics in the Trump era. Biggest strength: The Vermont senator, who identifies himself as a democratic socialist, generated progressive energy that fueled his insurgent 2016 campaign and the best fundraising numbers of any Democrat so far. Biggest weakness: He’s older than Biden, and needs to expand his appeal beyond his largely white base.
Best known for: Serving as mayor of South Bend, Ind., and being a former Naval intelligence officer. Biggest strength: He’s won over voters and many skeptics with his intelligence and an articulate yet plain-spoken speaking style. He’s also shown an ability to inspire voters of different ages with a message of hope and “a new generation of leadership” and has been able to raise millions more than many of his rivals. Biggest weakness: His youth and lack of experience — his only public office has been leading his community of about 100,000 people — will give some voters pause.
Best known for: Serving as California attorney general from 2011 to 2017, and now as junior U.S. senator from California. She is known for her rigorous questioning of Trump’s nominees. Biggest strength: As the single black woman in the race, she’s able to tap into networks — like historically black colleges and universities, and her Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority — that haven’t been fully realized before. Biggest weakness: Her prosecutorial record has come under scrutiny amid a push for criminal justice reform.
Best known for: Serving as the senior senator from Massachusetts; as an earlier career as a Harvard Law professor; and for her role in helping to create the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under President Obama.
Best known for: Narrowly losing the 2018 Senate race to Republican Ted Cruz in Texas, the country’s largest conservative state.
Biggest strength: She has presented a plethora of progressive policy ideas, including eliminating existing student loan debt for millions of Americans, implementing a “wealth tax” and providing universal child care.
Biggest strength: A do-ityourself campaign style that packs lots of travel and multiple events into long days and encourages off-thecuff discussions with voters that still allow O’Rourke to talk up his days as a punk rock guitarist and his love for his home on the U.S.-Mexico border.
Biggest weakness: She is viewed as one of the most liberal candidates, which could hurt her among moderates.
Biggest weakness: He’s longer on enthusiasm and vague bipartisan optimism than actual policy ideas.
THE MIDDLE OF THE PACK Here are the candidates who were mentioned in the Post-ABC poll, but by less than 3% of respondents.
Cory Booker
Amy Klobuchar
Age: 50
Age: 58
Best known for: Serving as mayor of Newark, then senator from New Jersey; flouting Senate rules on confidential documents during the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation fight.
Best known for: Serving as a three-term Minnesota senator.
Biggest strength: His optimistic, unity-first attitude could resonate at a time of deep political divisions.
Biggest weakness: Pragmatism may work against her in a primary, as voters increasingly embrace more liberal policies. There have also been reports of her mistreating staff.
Biggest weakness: Convincing voters he can take on Trump.
Biggest strength: She’s known as a pragmatic lawmaker willing to work with Republicans to get things done.
John Hickenlooper Age: 67 Best known for: Being a quirky brewpub owner who became a politician late in life, rising to governor of Colorado. Biggest strength: An unorthodox political persona and successful electoral track record in a swing state. Biggest weakness: He’s previously joked that he is too centrist to win the Democratic nomination.

Biggest strength: His relative youth and status as the only Latino in the race could help him win votes.
Biggest strength: His robust policy agenda and tech savvy.
Biggest weakness: His fundraising lags well behind other contenders.
Biggest weakness: Low name recognition and no political experience.

Holding a grudge: Preakness could give vindication Maximum Security owner Gary West is uncertain whether to enter his colt in the Preakness Stakes. To miss it would be a shame because thoroughbred racing loves a good grudge match. And Maximum Security is perfect for the shorter Triple Crown race May 18 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Maximum Security became the first Kentucky Derby winner disqualified in 145 years, cited for interference when lugging out entering the stretch. The noise spooked the green colt away from the
infield crowd. Yes, he was guilty — like someone driving 28 mph in a 25-mph zone. Technically, the stewards made the right call, but if not for the pressure imposed by millions of fans watching, the violation might have gone unpunished, like when the officer doesn’t show up to traffic court. You’d think West would welcome the chance to prove his colt is better than Country House, who inherited the victory after the winner was moved to 17th. Certainly, Maximum Security’s bettors would like a chance to recoup millions in losses thanks to the DQ. If West decides to appeal the
result, it might not be resolved before the Preakness. The Kentucky racing commission’s decision would likely be followed by court challenges that could take years, so West should settle it on the track first. The 1980 Preakness shows why simply appealing isn’t enough. Codex’s victory was called into question by the Maryland Racing Commission after its jockey was shown bumping runner-up Genuine Risk, a filly who won the Derby. After a lengthy delay, though, the official order of finish wasn’t changed. Codex trainer D. Wayne Lukas told the commission, “When you’re running in the Preakness, you don’t say, ‘Excuse me, ma’am.’ ” A rematch could be reminiscent of the 1988 Preakness Stakes, when Derby runner-up Forty Niner intentionally caused Derby champion Winning Colors, trained by Lukas, to lose the rematch through rough riding in the first turn. That Forty Niner finished seventh didn’t seem to matter
to trainer Woody Stephens. He gained his Derby revenge. After all, it sometimes gets rough on the track. The 1933 Derby was known as the “Fighting Finish,” when jockeys of the top two finishers were photographed grabbing and hitting each other with whips in the final yards. No action was taken. Maximum Security would certainly be the heavy Preakness favorite over Country House. The shorter Preakness favors front-runners like Maximum Security, who could dictate the pace over the laterunning Country House. But a third meeting in the 1½-mile Belmont Stakes might favor Country House, whose Derby victory was impressive given sloppy track conditions that hindered late runners. Racing needs rematches where everyone backs their choice. The Preakness would be perfect for Round 2. Rick Snider has covered sports in Washington since 1978. Follow him on Twitter @Snide_Remarks

ROCKETS VS. WARRIORS | GAME 4: 9:30 TONIGHT, TNT
ANALYSIS Before the Toyota Center crowd erupted in cheers, it erupted in laughter. Stephen Curry capped a nightmarish closing stretch in fitting fashion Saturday night, blowing an uncontested dunk during the final minute of a 126121 overtime loss in Houston. With the defense ceding the paint, Curry rose off one leg for a right-handed slam before suffering a fate known well to rec-leaguers worldwide: He got hung up on the front of the rim. “Not my finest moment,”
Curry grimaced afterward. The botched dunk was met with glee in the building and on social media. But Curry’s misfire, and his dreadful play leading up to it, should be no laughing matter to the Warriors. During the fourth quarter and overtime, he missed all six shots he attempted, failed to register an assist, didn’t grab a rebound and was whistled for four fouls. He finished with 17 points, missing 16 of 23 field- goal attempts. Simply put: The Warriors need more from Curry if they are to

put away the feisty Rockets — who trail the series 2-1 — and finish off their fourth title in five years. Although Kevin Durant’s brilliance has largely masked his team’s flaws this postseason, Golden State is most vulnerable when Curry’s impact is limited. “I want to shoot the ball better,” he said. “That’s going to happen.” Curry’s Game 3 might have ended on a blooper, but his night closed with that promise — which sounded an awful lot like a threat. A mourning exercise

Linda Cardellini, left, and Christina Applegate play women in mourning on “Dead to Me.”
Emily Watson, Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgard star in the premiere of this five-part limited series about the infamous 1986 nuclear accident and the subsequent efforts to limit its devastation.
Netflix’s darkly comedic thriller ‘Dead to Me’ explores the aftermath of a tragedy TV REVIEW The premise of “Dead to Me,” Netflix’s darkly comedic 10-episode thriller that came out Friday, is itself a big spoiler. Like many good dramas, everything is constructed around an initial act of deception; once you know about it, you’ll spend the rest of this easily addictive series fretting about when and how the truth will finally come out. At first, though, “Dead to Me” seems like one of those clever dramedies set against an unconventional response to grief. Christina Applegate stars as Jen, a successful Orange County, Calif., real estate agent whose husband was killed a couple of months earlier by a hit-and-run driver while he was out for a
nighttime jog, leaving Jen to raise two sons (Sam McCarthy and Luke Roessler). Forcing herself to attend a support group meeting for the recently bereaved, Jen meets Judy (Linda Cardellini), who recently lost her fiance. Jen rebuffs Judy’s friendly attempts to mingle. (“I hope this isn’t weird,” Judy asks her, “but can I give you a hug?” Jen flatly declines.) A friendship begins to bloom anyhow, when Jen takes Judy up on her offer to call any time of night, since neither woman has been sleeping much since their respective losses. Over the phone, Jen finally gets to unload some of the anger and sadness she’s experienced, which Judy soaks up like a commiserating
A range of emotions It’s fun to watch Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini so skillfully handle “Dead to Me’s” erratic tonal range as the show constantly segues from deadly serious to appreciably absurd. Along with a supporting cast that includes James Marsden and Ed Asner, Applegate and Cardellini give absorbing and well-synced performances. H.S.
sponge. They start to hang out socially, and Judy learns that Jen is investigating her husband’s death more intently than the local police. It will come as no surprise to any half-smart viewer of “Dead to Me” that Judy is not being
entirely truthful about her reason for attending the support group. All the viewer should know about that first-episode reveal is that the little lies are not nearly as important as the bigger lies that have yet to be discovered. In this regard, “Dead to Me,” created by Liz Feldman (“2 Broke Girls”), exhibits a masterful understanding of binge-era story structure. As the plot begins to froth, “Dead to Me” takes some side paths that are egregiously predictable, but the anxiety level is spot-on. The show keeps the intensity level high to the very last minute. When the series ends on a cliffhanger, it suggests a whole new dynamic for a potential second season. Count this viewer in.

Comedy sketch shows are almost always wildly uneven as they seek to fill 30 minutes, an hour or, for “Saturday Night Live,” 90 minutes. You’ll laugh, you’ll sigh with boredom and inevitably you’ll go “ew” instead of “ha.” “I Think You Should Leave,” a new Netflix sketch show from semi-obscure “SNL”
alum Tim Robinson, solves that problem. The six episodes, which dropped April 23, are each a compact quarter-hour. But how does it fare on the laugh-o-meter? As the title indicates, the skits are often about normal situations that turn yucky. So it’s time for the obnoxious person to vamoose. Like when guest star Will Forte begins chitchatting with two honeymooners on a

E! renews “Very Cavallari,” “Revenge Body”
Then comes the skit about a birthday party guest (an uncomfortably intense Robinson). Desperate to confirm that the birthday guy (Steven Yeun) likes his gift of a wreath, he demands the gift receipt … and eats it! Perhaps fans of poop humor may be amused by what comes next. But the spiraling stupidity made me want to say to the show, “I think you should leave now.” Then again, if an episode sinks below your personal threshold of gross-yet-acceptable humor, at least you’ve only wasted 15 minutes. “I love you for this! Keep making our future brighter one child at a time.” @LAIAWORLDWIDE, praising Birmingham, Ala., teacher Jasmine Merlette for a video of her thirdgrade class singing a new version of the hit song “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X. Merlette gets the kids hyped up as they excitedly sing about passing their tests and keeping their grades up, punctuated by the line “Can’t stop me from learning.” Lil Nas X himself saw the video, tweeting, “This [is] beautiful.”

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You can get away with something today that no one else can. Does this mean you should try to do so at any other time? GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You can prove that you know precisely what you’re talking about when you put your words into action and get the results you’ve promised. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Everyone has a valid point of view, perhaps, but there is only one set of facts that you must heed. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You are eager to see someone else succeed today, and you can do much to help him or her do what is required, but at some point you must let go. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may not be feeling quite as confident as usual today, probably because you don’t have the latest info.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You’ve been dreaming of today for quite some time, and what you most want can finally be yours — for a price. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You can tell someone else what he or she needs to hear, or you can tell the truth. The choice is yours. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Someone is likely to take the information you impart today and use it in a way that you had not imagined.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) The best way for you to let others know what you expect from them is to lead by example. That way, there can be little misunderstanding.
TODAY: The workweek starts off considerably more dry, so that’s a plus. Sunshine should emerge at times, but we may see considerable clouds, and a stray shower can’t be ruled out. Otherwise, spring vibes make a decent comeback, with highs reaching the mid-70s. Skies finally turn mostly clear tonight.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You get a message that is difficult to decipher, but once you do so, you may realize everything is about to change for the better. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You can do more than you had planned today, and someone who knows you well sets things up in such a way that you can be on top very soon.
