Awkward: Armed suspect tripped up by grandpa hanging out at the library
A leading contemporary art museum in Paris opened its doors to nudists for a special visit Saturday. It was part of a growing effort by France’s tiny nudist community to promote acceptance of clothes-free activities, after the opening of a nudist restaurant and nudist park, also in Paris. The visit to the Palais du Tokyo took place before opening hours so the nudists wouldn’t mingle with other visitors. They viewed an exhibit of works focused on discord. (AP)
A Colorado woman has been cited by police after a container of what appeared to be urine blew up as she was heating it in a microwave at a 7-Eleven. Police said the incident occurred in Aurora last week, when the clerk heard a loud bang and saw 26-year-old Angelique Sanchez take a white plastic bottle out of the microwave. When the clerk confronted her, Sanchez allegedly wiped a yellow liquid that smelled like urine onto the floor and walked out. (AP)

Cruise up to The Wharf
American Revolution-themed ship makes a stop in D.C.’s newest neighborhood

BILL O’LEARY (THE WASHINGTON POST)
THE DISTRICT The District’s newest neighborhood has counted on visitors arriving by car, foot, bus and rail to take in the $2.5 billion luxury development in the city’s smallest quadrant. More than six months after its opening, they’re also arriving by cruise ship. For years, the only cruises associated with the waterfront were of the dinner variety, but last month marked the debut of the ship American Constitution using The Wharf as a port of call. The D.C. destination on the ship’s 11-day American Revolution-themed cruise marks an evolution for a young neighborhood filled with gleaming highrise housing and fine dining on the Southwest Waterfront. Monty Hoffman, founder of PN Hoffman, a developer of The Wharf, said no dredging was required to make the Washington Channel suitable for the 267-foot-long ship, which dwarfs the Potomac’s water taxis. “What we want to do is connect all the water ports together,” Hoffman said of possible future connections to Georgetown, National Harbor and Alexandria as
The cruise ship American Constitution docks at The Wharf in Washington.
The Wharf matures. While he doesn’t envision a Carnival-esque ship docking at The Wharf, it works for the more modest vessel that takes cruisegoers on a circuit around the Chesapeake Bay. On an unseasonably warm evening last week, the American Constitution sailed into a waterfront that’s far from a sleepy New England harbor or idyllic
Caribbean beach. Those sitting on the ship’s upper decks at rush hour had a view of southbound cars backed up on the 14th Street Bridge. The cruise, operated by Connecticut-based American Cruise Lines, was designed mostly for a senior crowd that draws heavily from the West Coast. It includes stops at Yorktown, Va., and Mount Vernon, as well as Annapolis,

A huge fire caused nearly $9 million in damage at a construction project in Prince George’s County on Friday, but all was not lost. Amid the fiery destruction of partially completed buildings in the Lanham area, two box turtles were rescued, a county spokesman reported. Maryland National Capital parks ranger Michael Ellis spotted the turtles in the path of a moving brush fire and carried them to safety before the flames could reach them. Ignited by the construction fire, the large brush fire was contained and extinguished within about three hours. (TWP)

White fallout reveals D.C. rift
$6M
D.C. Council member Trayon White has faced heavy criticism for endorsing a conspiracy that a prominent Jewish family controls the weather.
Jewish, said elected officials’ reticence stems from the uncomfortable way in which the episode has exposed the viability of antiSemitic conspiracy theories in the poor and overwhelmingly African-American neighborhoods of Southeast. Those areas have felt comparably little benefit from D.C.’s rapid economic expansion. Real estate projects, not uncommonly helmed by Jewish developers, inspire fears of gentrification. White’s supporters have frequently cast criticism of the council member as attacks on a popular African-American leader who is calling attention to the ways in which

THE DISTRICT The fallout from a D.C. lawmaker’s claim that Jewish financiers control the weather has laid bare divisions that many in the nation’s capital would just as soon ignore. It has also exposed what critics say is a leadership vacuum among the city’s elected officials. It has been seven weeks since D.C. Council member Trayon White Sr., D-Ward 8, gained international notoriety for endorsing a conspiracy theory that the Rothschilds, a Jewish banking family, are manipulating the climate for financial gain. What began as an embarrassment for White, a first-term lawmaker from D.C.’s most impoverished ward, turned into a test of the ability of city officials to handle the explosive race and class resentments that can arise in a city whose prosperity masks a gap between its haves and have-nots. Critics say it is a test that elected leaders have failed, or at best barely passed. It was only last week that the city council — made up of Democrats and two left-leaning independents — unanimously condemned hate speech against Jews. Their statement came after a rabbi barged into a meeting of legislators to denounce their inaction. D.C. Council member Elissa Silverman, I-At Large, who is

his constituents have been left behind. Silverman, who is running for re-election citywide and has
often been an ally of White’s on the council, wrote in an open letter to city officials last week that White “shouldn’t have to be the lone leader to bear the burden” of what she described as “a collective, overall toleration for anti-Jewish sentiment” among D.C.’s elected leaders. “I will admit even I’ve been guilty of letting anti-Jewish remarks slide, because I didn’t want to cause friction or disruption,” she wrote. White, who declined to comment for this story, has attended a bagels-and-lox breakfast and Passover Seder as he tries to mend fences with Jewish leaders. He and his staff even visited the Holocaust Museum, although White left his private tour early. Further initiatives are planned in the coming weeks between Jewish groups and AfricanAmerican leaders. But some question whether the efforts just paper over lasting fissures. “I don’t think we’ve gone anywhere, and part of me thinks it’s gotten worse,” said Michael Bekesha, a Republican candidate for the Ward 6 council seat who called for White’s resignation. “You really now see this divide between supporters of council member White and other individuals about racism and anti-Semitism.” Bekesha, who is Jewish, said the council’s action was “too little, too late,” and that events had spiraled out of control because elected officials remained silent for such an extended period of time. TOLL REVENUE
The amount Virginia made in tolls during the first four months of operation of the I-66 Express Lanes, state transportation officials said last week. The new system — with tolls that have reached as high as $47.50 — is expected to generate $12 million by the end of the fiscal year June 30, officials said. The state will allocate nearly half to the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, which is coordinating projects along the I-66 corridor. The rest will go to operations and maintenance on the I-66 Express Lanes, officials said. (TWP)

Md. to offer free tuition at community colleges Going to community college may soon be much more affordable for Maryland residents. Gov. Larry Hogan plans to sign a bill this week the covers tuition costs at community colleges for qualifying residents. The legislation was approved near the end of this year’s legislative session. It will create a $15 million program to provide scholarships of up to $5,000 to students from families earning less than $125,000 a year. Single adults earning less than $90,000 also would be eligible for the money. The program will go into effect in 2019. (AP) VIRGINIA BEACH, VA.
Police: Ambulance thief claimed he drank a ton Police said the man who stole an ambulance, crashed it and then had to be rescued admitted to drinking a lot. Citing a Virginia Beach Police search warrant request, The Virginian-Pilot reported Thursday that Theodore Gasiorowski didn’t lowball how much he had drunk. Officer B.P. Hoke wrote in the request that Gasiorowski said he drank a ton, measured by an obscenity. Police say that on April 20, Gasiorowski stole an ambulance from a hospital. It was later found on its roof with Gasiorowski inside. (AP)

Deaths of three women under investigation in D.C. ruled homicides
at (301) 405-3054
Note: Women who are pregnant or breast feeding may not participate.
THE DISTRICT Two of the three women whose skeletal remains were found in a wooded area and crawl space in Southeast Washington last month were shot. The third woman suffered other injuries, District officials said Friday. The determinations were based on an examination of the skeletal remains, said Roger Mitchell Jr., D.C.’s medical
examiner. Mitchell, who ruled the deaths homicides, said the decomposition of the remains suggested the three women had probably been dead for at least a year. Police and Mitchell said the identities of the women and when they were killed remain a mystery. The District’s forensic anthropologist is working to clean and assemble the skeletons and will use DNA to determine the ancestry — and hopefully the names — of the women. Mitchell said the FBI also has been tapped to work on the identifications,
a process he said could take months. D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said authorities do not yet know whether the homicides are related. Newsham said that in addition to clothing, some “personal items” were found at the scene, but he declined to say what those are. The first set of remains was found April 25 by contractors working under the first floor of a three-story red brick apartment building in Congress Heights. KEITH L. ALEXANDER AND JUSTIN WM. NRA supporters defend gun rights at meeting
A BIT OF INSIGHT
NASA craft aims to probe Mars’ geology
DALLAS Joe and Connie Henderson packed up their car in Arizona early last week and drove nearly 1,000 miles to the National Rifle Association’s 147th annual meeting in Dallas. The couple came to their first meeting to check out the latest firearms and to stand up for an organization they believe is under attack. “We really wanted to be able to see this someday,” Joe Henderson said. The annual NRA convention is a huge trade show, where firearms enthusiasts ogle the newest products: holsters, scopes, rifles, commemorative coins. It is a massive marketing opportunity for the NRA, with photos of its leaders hanging throughout the convention center, offers of discount membership, and T-shirts and other swag for sale. There are seminars on firearm safety and Second Amendment law. And there is a major political element, with the president and vice president this year asserting their support for a group that has been challenged by students, activists, corporations and politicians since a school shooting left 17 dead Feb. 14 in Parkland, Fla. Many people said they wanted to come this year to show solidarity with the NRA and affirm

their right to bear arms. They also wanted to reject what they say is the assertion that anyone linked to the NRA is complicit in mass shootings. “It just makes me angry when people try to demonize gun owners and NRA members,” said Scott Glenn, of Salida, Colo. “They try to look at all of us like baby killers and we’re not.” For Brandon Theabold, firearms are a family affair. He and his wife have eight children between them, ages 8 to 21, all of whom are familiar with guns. “This is tradition. It’s my heritage,” said Theabold, of Queen Creek, Ariz. “This is something we can do as a family. ... It teaches responsibility, teaches safety, it teaches so many things.” Dennis Stewart, of Dalton,
Texas, deviates from the NRA on a few issues. He thinks bump stocks should be illegal, that civilian background checks should be as robust as those in the military and that the age to own rifles such as the AR-15 should be raised to 21, an idea the NRA has rejected. “The drinking age is 21,” he said. “There’s no point in buying an AR at 18.” For the Hendersons, attending was more of a political statement. They watched President Trump’s address Friday and applauded when he said that “Second Amendment rights are under siege” and called on members to vote Republican. “We do need to get rid of the people who want to get rid of our rights,” Connie Henderson said.
After launching Saturday from California’s central coast, NASA’s Mars InSight is heading for the red planet, aiming to land there and explore its insides. It’s the first interplanetary mission to depart from the West Coast rather than from Florida’s Cape Canaveral. InSight will dig deeper into Mars than ever before — nearly 16 feet — to take the planet’s temperature and provide a 3D image of its interior. Scientists only know it has an iron core and a crust. InSight will also attempt to make the first measurements of marsquakes. The spacecraft will take more than six months to get to Mars, traveling 300 million miles. (AP)

Trump’s willing warrior Press secretary Sanders plays a precarious role speaking for a president known for falsehoods

of six times. “Some information I am aware of, and some I’m not.” Sanders routinely dodges questions on hot topics by telling reporters she hasn’t discussed them with the president — a deliberate strategy to avoid having to wade into delicate issues, according to a Sanders confidant. She deflects nearly every question about the special counsel’s investigation into Russian interference in the election unless she has a prepared statement from the president to read — a protective move against creating legal exposure for herself with extemporaneous answers. “Sarah has done a fantastic job of keeping in line with understanding how to effectively communicate what the president’s thoughts are at any given time,” former White House press secretary Sean Spicer said. “What she has done is, she has realized, you can’t get in trouble for what you don’t say.” ASHLEY PARKER, JOSH DAWSEY
POLITICS President Trump would not have to comply with a subpoena issued by the special counsel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and could invoke the Fifth Amendment if he does sit down with him, one of his lawyers said Sunday. “We don’t have to” comply with a subpoena, Rudy Giuliani, who recently joined Trump’s legal team, said on ABC News. “He’s the president of the United States. We can assert the same privileges other presidents have.” Giuliani’s claims came less than a week after The Washington Post reported that special counsel Robert Mueller, who is seeking to interview Trump, had raised the possibility of subpoenaing the president during a meeting this year. During his interview, Giuliani repeatedly assailed Mueller’s probe, questioning why he would “walk him into a prosecution for perjury” (referring to the president) by letting Trump sit for an interview. Trump has publicly said he would speak to Mueller. Giuliani also defended the payment Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen made to adult-film star Stormy Daniels, who had alleged a relationship with Trump, and said it was possible that Cohen may have paid off other women as well. “I have no knowledge of that,” Giuliani said. “But I would think if it was necessary, yes.”

media even harder and more frequently, and that other administrations have also faced credibility problems, such as the mistruths on the Monica Lewinsky affair under President Bill Clinton and the false information on weapons of mass destruction under President George W. Bush. “It doesn’t matter who holds this job for President Trump, they’re going to be unfairly attacked and ridiculed,” said Jason Miller, a former Trump campaign adviser. Sanders declined to be interviewed for this article. Fresh trouble for Sanders arose Wednesday night, when Giuliani said on Fox News that Trump had reimbursed his longtime personal attorney, Michael Cohen, for the $130,000 in hush money he paid to Daniels. Giuliani’s disclosure appeared to be at odds with Sanders’ repeated insistence that Trump was not aware of Cohen’s payment to Daniels. The interview,

POLITICS White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was thrust into an especially harsh limelight last week. She was the subject of an acerbic broadside about her “bunch of lies” by comedian Michelle Wolf at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner the previous weekend. Then she was forced to explain the inconsistent accounts from herself, President Trump and his new personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, about the hush money paid to adult-film actress Stormy Daniels. The week was punctuated by an onslaught of commentary about Sanders’ character. By virtue of her position, Sanders is inextricably bound up in the mistruths of the Trump administration. She is a willing warrior for Trump, and her critics say she should be held accountable for his utterances. Since taking office, Trump has made more than 3,000 false or misleading claims, according to an analysis by The Washington Post’s Fact Checker. “When the president blithely admits to lying, it makes all those who are paid to repeat and defend his stories liars, as well,” said David Axelrod, who was a senior White House adviser under President Barack Obama. “Their credibility is tied to his. It’s a high price to pay for a job, even in the White House.” Those in Trump’s orbit argue that the attacks on Sanders, 35, have been more sustained and personally vicious than those faced by press secretaries in previous administrations. Allies of Sanders say that she often pushes back on Trump, who wants her to attack the

nation+world Country’s first voting in nine years marked by political apathy LEBANON Lebanon’s first national elections in nine years were marked by a tepid turnout Sunday, reflecting voter frustration over corruption and a stagnant economy. President Michel Aoun broadcast an appeal to voters to participate. “If you want change, you should exercise your right” to vote, he said. The election — the first held
since the outbreak of the Syrian war in 2011 — had been postponed a number of times over concerns it would ignite tensions among Lebanon’s sects, already heightened by that war. Some 586 candidates, among them 86 women, were running for the 128-seat parliament. Official results are expected today. The low turnout — which Interior Minister Nohad Machnouk said was between 32 percent and 42 percent in Beirut precincts — betrayed widespread voter apathy for the main political currents governing the country. nation+world Space agency: Musk’s proposed fuel method puts astronauts at risk SCIENCE When Elon Musk and his team at SpaceX were looking to make their Falcon 9 rocket even more powerful, they came up with a creative idea — keep the propellant at super-cold temperatures to shrink its size, allowing them to pack more of it into the tanks. But the approach comes with a major risk, according to some safety experts. At those extreme temperatures, the propellant would need to be loaded just before takeoff — while astronauts are aboard. An accident, or a spark, during this maneuver,
known as “load-and-go,” could set off an explosion. The proposal has raised alarms for members of Congress and NASA safety advisers as the agency and SpaceX prepare to launch humans into orbit as early as this year. One watchdog group labeled load-and-go a “potential safety risk.” A NASA advisory group warned in a letter that the method was “contrary to booster safety criteria that has been in place for over 50 years.” Concerns at NASA over the astronauts’ safety hit a high point when, in September 2016, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket blew up while it was being fueled ahead of an engine test. No one was hurt, but the payload, a multimilliondollar satellite, was lost. The

Officials from Boeing and President Trump’s NASA transition team said they considered the same issues on the load-and-go procedure, and cited safety risks. Some officials accuse NASA of being overly conservative in the wake of two shuttle disasters that killed 14 astronauts. “I worry, to be perfectly honest, if we would have ever launched Apollo in our environment here today,” Robert Lightfoot, former acting NASA administrator, said in a speech in April. One of the world’s most active volcanoes, Kilauea erupted Friday, destroying at least nine homes in Leilani Estates. More than 1,700 people were evacuated as molten rock, toxic gas and steam burst through openings in the ground. The eruption caused earthquakes and sent lava spewing more than 200 feet in the air.

2 chances to win: Finally, Caps have the edge on Pens Here, in some order, is what the Capitals overcame Saturday night: They were without wing Andre Burakovsky, who is hurt. They were without wing Tom Wilson, who is suspended. And in the third period they lost center Nicklas Backstrom to injury. They played a miserable second period, their worst of this series against the Penguins. They trailed by a goal heading into the final 20 minutes in their own building, when a loss would have granted the Penguins a chance to advance at home tonight. The Capitals took penalty after penalty, leaving the feeling in the stadium both dour and dire. And now? Now they have not one but two chances to — oh,
if you’re reading this far, you know precisely what’s at stake. “I don’t know if I could tell you exactly what it would mean,” veteran forward T.J. Oshie said. “None of us have ever been there.” Not in a red sweater, at least. Process what just happened. Blink your eyes clear. Let them focus. Yep, that’s what you see: The Capitals beat the Penguins, 6-3, in Game 5 of this secondround series. They hold a 3-2 series lead. They could … Let’s walk this back a bit. Because if the Capitals are to advance to a place to which this group has never ventured, they need to do more of what they did Saturday and less of what they have done for — oh, basically the entire existence of this franchise. “We’re going to Pittsburgh with one goal in mind,” coach
Barry Trotz said. “It’s very simple.” Keep it that way, Barry. Simple. Eyes straight forward. Heartbeats calm. Breaths even. It’s the only explanation for what the Capitals pulled off Saturday. They were outshot 18-5 in the second period. They offered the Penguins, who had the best power play in the league during the season, four consecutive power plays. Had goalie Braden Holtby not developed into their absolute spine, their heads might have exploded between the second and third periods. Certainly, they would have trailed by more than 3-2. Instead, they were calm. And now they have their best chance. It has taken significant

work to reach this point, a point at which the Capitals can say — in emotion and on paper — that they have an advantage. Though the previous series in the Alex Ovechkin-Sidney Crosby era — in 2009, 2016 and 2017 — have gone seven, six and seven games, Washington has never had two chances to eliminate Pittsburgh. Now, how to handle those chances? This is such a sucker thing to say, but I’ll say it anyway: This feels different. It’s not to say the Penguins can’t win at home tonight and again Wednesday in D.C. Of course they can. But this one feels different. The fans, they will believe it when the clock shows 0:00 and the scoreboard reads more goals for the Capitals than for the Penguins. Imagine that scene. But for now, what the Capitals know about themselves is that what’s in front of them now has never been in front of them before — two shots to beat the Penguins and move on to the Eastern Conference finals. Celtics at 76ers 6 p.m., TNT; Celtics up 3-0
Optimistic sports fans in Philly (yes, there are some) thought “The Process” would lift the Sixers into the East’s elite this postseason, but they could be eliminated at home tonight. They lost Game 3 in OT at home Saturday, 101-98, in part because of errors by rookie point guard Ben Simmons. The best rookie in this series has been Boston’s Jayson Tatum, above, who is averaging 24.3 points.
Raptors at Cavaliers 8:30 p.m., TNT; Cavs up 3-0
The Raptors had the best record in the East this season, but the stage is set tonight for another playoff exit at the hands of the Cavaliers. The Raptors, who were eliminated by the Cavaliers in 2016 and ’17, are in danger of being swept by Cleveland for the second year in a row. Blame it on LeBron: James, above, won Saturday’s Game 3 with a running one-hander at the buzzer. (EXPRESS)

Few horses vanquished by Justify in Ky. Derby will face him on May 19 HORSE RACING The competition isn’t exactly lining up to take another shot at Kentucky Derby winner Justify in the Preakness. Of his 19 rivals in the Derby, it appears most will skip the second leg of the Triple Crown in favor of resting and being pointed
toward other races. That leaves mostly fresh horses to potentially fill the maximum 14-horse Preakness field at Pimlico in Baltimore on May 19. A day after Justify raced to a 2½-length victory in the slop as the 5-2 favorite, trainer Bob Baffert and his star horse drew a horde of visitors Sunday to his barn at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Baffert guided his fifth Derby winner out of the barn Sunday

record-tying seventh Preakness victory. His four other Derby winners — Silver Charm, Real Quiet, War Emblem and American Pharoah — all won the Preakness. American Pharoah went on to capture the 2015 Belmont Stakes and complete the sport’s first Triple Crown in 37 years. Kentucky Derby runner-up Good Magic, last year’s 2-yearold champion, appears unlikely to run in the Preakness, but trainer Chad Brown said he hasn’t made a final decision. Manville puts her heart into sitcom ‘Mum’ TELEVISION If Lesley Manville’s Oscarnominated portrayal of an icy, unyielding family gatekeeper in “Phantom Thread” sent shivers down your spine, “Mum” is the antidote. In the U.K. sitcom, Manville plays the polar opposite of her film role, a gentle soul with never a harsh word to say. It’s further proof of the actress’ shape-shifting artistry that has made her a favorite of top directors and actors. Let’s name drop: Daniel DayLewis, the triple Oscar-winning star who played opposite her in “Phantom Thread.” The film’s acclaimed director, Paul Thomas Anderson. Mike Leigh, another singular filmmaker, who has featured Manville repeatedly, including as a faithful wife in “Topsy-Turvy” and a damaged woman in “Another Year.”
11
All that achievement and yet Manville is as warm — if far more spirited — than Cathy, her character in “Mum,” which debuts its second season on Mother’s Day. But she says she’s not a match for Cathy’s “miraculous” tolerance. “If there was an emoji that depicted Cathy, it would just be one big heart,” Manville says. “She allows people to be what they are. That’s a great thing, really, and something I probably fall short of in my own life. She allows people to come to their own conclusions about their own shortcomings or misgivings or bad behavior without judging them.” Cathy, a recent widow and teacher’s aide, is tested by her loving but clueless adult son (Sam Swainsbury) and his even more clueless partner (Lisa McGrillis). Manville empathizes with Cathy’s new challenge of single motherhood. While the character takes on the challenge late in life, the actress noted she had the similar task of bringing up her son, Alfie Oldman (from her short-lived marriage to actor

Fresh off an Oscar nomination for “Phantom Thread,” Lesley Manville plays a recent widow in the second season of the British sitcom “Mum.”
Catching up with ‘Mum’ American viewers can find “Mum” on BritBox, a streaming service with the U.S. rights for British programming, including classic episodes of “Doctor Who” and the original version of “The Office.” The first season of “Mum” is currently available on BritBox, with the second season set to be released Sunday. Gary Oldman). “I understand the delicacies and the dances that one needs to do around a teenage and 20-something-year-old son,” she says. “They can be a tricky,
delicate territory, and you have to be careful.” The ensemble’s byplay is so fresh that it seems certain improv must be involved. It’s not, Manville says, crediting the impression to how “brilliantly” her fellow actors perform and to the work of series creator Stefan Golaszewski. For Manville, any worthy project has to start with the script. And not every filmmaker can expect the much-honored stage and screen actress to surrender her autonomy. “I can smell a bad one very quickly,” Manville said, with a distinctly un-Cathy chortle.
Benedict Cumberbatch plays the title character in the premiere of a five-episode limited series about an aristocrat struggling to overcome substance abuse and a traumatic childhood.

The number of days it took “Avengers: Infinity War” to cross $1 billion at the global box office, breaking the record of 12 held by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” The Walt Disney Co. said Sunday that the Marvel blockbuster was on pace to gross an estimated $112.5 million from North American theaters over the weekend. There was little new competition for “Infinity War,” with the comedy “Overboard” finishing a distant second at $14.8 million. “A Quiet Place,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Rampage” rounded out the top five. La ‘Vida’ loca: Starz’s twisty new telenovela will keep you hooked The narrator of “Jane the Virgin” mocks the show’s twisty plot by saying, “Just like a telenovela, right?” — referring to those Spanish-language soaps where anything can happen. With “Jane” on hiatus for the summer after a season finale shocker — Jane’s dead husband, Michael, is apparently not dead! — where can telenovela fans turn? One contender is Starz’s new half-hour series “Vida,” which premiered last night. As “Jane’s” narrator might say, OMG! So much is happening! An aging woman fixes her hair in the bathroom, bleeds from the nostrils and falls dead
on the tile floor. Her MexicanAmerican daughters come home to East LA for the funeral: Chicagoan Emma (Mishel Prada) wears neutral tones and has an impeccable pageboy hairstyle and bright red lips; Lyn (Melissa Barrera) of San Francisco has flowing hair and hippie clothes — and a history of borrowing money from Emma for iffy businesses, like “fair-sourced” Aztec jewelry. Of course they hate each other, yet are drawn together by the shocking news that not only is their mother dead but, unbeknownst to them, she was married — to a woman! Meanwhile, Lyn’s old friend Johnny (Carlos Miranda) comes to the funeral reception,
held at the bar owned by Lyn’s late mother. He’s with his fiancee, but before you know it, Lyn and Johnny get naughty on the cellar steps while the mourners upstairs feast on sweets, notably flan. That leads Emma to disdainfully declare, “What’s with all the f---ing flan?” Vulgarisms fly freely: Johnny’s sister calls Lyn a “puta” (Spanish for prostitute). “It isn’t a homecoming until somebody calls you a puta,” Lyn retorts. The pointed humor goes well with the melodrama. Through six episodes, “Vida” will explore family issues and gender issues through a Latino lens. And social issues, too: Emma wants to sell Mom’s bar, even though the neighbors are up in arms about looming gentrification. Like all good telenovelas, “Vida” makes you wonder what’ll happen next. One certainty: Emma and Lyn aren’t heading home anytime soon. Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse

Nine days later, a doctor pulled six more pieces of the roach’s carcass out of Holley’s ear canal.

Prince William and his wife Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, have released two photos documenting the early days of Britain’s newest prince — one of which, above, shows Prince Louis being cuddled by 3-year-old big sister Princess Charlotte. The other photo was snapped when Louis was just three days old. The photos were taken by Kate at their home in Kensington Palace. Big brother Prince George, 4, is not in them. A palace statement said Sunday that William and Kate want to thank the public for “all of the kind messages” received since Louis’ birth. (AP)

January Jones, a fan of Bravo’s “Vanderpump Rules,” tried to have her 40th birthday party at Lisa Vanderpump’s restaurant Pump but no one called her back. “My publicist called. My best friend called. We called and called,” she told Yahoo Lifestyle. She even says she texted Bravo’s Andy Cohen, who gave her a manager’s number, but “the guy wouldn’t call me back.” (EXPRESS)
