A family of raccoons fell through a ceiling and into the living room of a Michigan home. The Jackson Citizen Patriot reported that a homeowner in Sheridan Township sought help Friday after the raccoons fell from an attic. Police said a dog catcher pole was used to collar the raccoon. (AP)
An intoxicated man’s decision to spend the night on a freight train caused commuter chaos in Munich as police shut down all traffic at a busy station to look for him. Police said Monday they got a call at 5:20 a.m. from a man who’d woken up in a container on a train near the Pasing station and couldn’t get out. The 25-year-old was so drunk when he entered the container he wasn’t sure where it was. Police went train-to-train until they found him an hour later. (AP)

‘Little one’ is growing fast Zookeepers are thrilled to see Moke, the baby lowland gorilla, thriving
FRIENDSHIP HEIGHTS
ROSHAN PATEL (SMITHSONIAN’S NATIONAL ZOO)
THE DISTRICT Moke, the lowland gorilla infant at the National Zoo in Northwest Washington, is growing fast and learning his surroundings, zoo officials said. At nearly 3 weeks old, Moke (pronounced “mo-KEY”) is “especially attentive, even at a young age,” according to zoo officials. He is getting more hair, his eyes are bright and he is alert. Moke means “junior” or “little one” in the Lingala language of Africa. Moke was born April 15 at the zoo to Calaya. It was a big event for the zoo, marking the first time such a gorilla had been born at the facility in nine years. Baraka, the 26-year-old father, is a silverback gorilla. Calaya, 15, and Baraka have been a couple since she came to the zoo three years ago, officials said. She became pregnant in August. “Moke already looks bigger,” said Melba Brown, the zoo’s Great Ape keeper. She said he spends much of his time — in between naps — looking at his

mother and “watching everything she does.” Zookeepers said Moke often watches Calaya as she uses “enrichment items” trainers give her. Those include “puzzle feeders,” paper bags filled with vegetables and alfalfa hay. Calaya is described by keepers as having a “dominant personality,” and when the items are spread out she tends to run over and take all of them, Brown said. Meanwhile, Moke is “right in her lap,” watching her. If a piece
of hay falls on him, he appears startled for a bit, keepers said, before he shakes it off. Zookeepers said they have been surprised at how alert Moke is; he often looks them — and other gorillas — right in the eye. He has also been reported to be nursing well, and at times keepers said they have found “copious amounts of milk around his mouth.” Other gorillas have noticed Moke. Two other silverback gorillas, brothers Kojo and Kwame,
have been watching Moke and have become more relaxed, keepers said. At times, Calaya will bring Moke over nea r Kojo a nd Kwame’s enclosure so they can watch him, zoo officials said. Keepers said they are working with Calaya on shifting Moke from one arm to the other so they can give her a full health evaluation. Moke needs to be more independent before Calaya will reposition him, Brown said. DANA HEDGPETH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The machine, dubbed Jeff’s Best, is owned by Chevy Chase-based Jefferson Foods. Customers can pick a size and flavor, and out pops a cup full of chocolate, vanilla or swirl, with toppings. Jeff Eden, founder of Jefferson Foods, said the machine has been well-received since it was installed last week. Six stations on Yellow, Blue lines will be closed for 98 days in 2019 TRANSPORTATION There will be no service on Metro’s Blue and Yellow lines south of Reagan National Airport for 98 days beginning in May 2019, as the transit agency embarks on a platform rebuilding project spanning six stations, part of an effort to refurbish 20 station platforms over three years. The work, which will at times target the Red, Blue, Yellow, Green and Orange lines, will focus on rebuilding crumbling station platforms that the agency says pose a safety risk to riders, and will mark Metro’s first major

capital project since securing $500 million a year in dedicated funding from the region. But the project’s initial phase, outlined in board documents Monday, is another blow to Blue and Yellow line riders who endured substantial slowdowns and service disruptions during four SafeTrack surges last year. “We’ve got a lot of work in front of us and it’s going to be inconvenient,” Metro Board Chairman Jack Evans said. “Getting the money was only ‘the end of the beginning,’ ” he said, referring to a favorite Churchillian overture, “and now the hard work starts.” The announcement of the longest line segment shutdown in the agency’s history so soon after SafeTrack drew swift criticism

Appeals court blocks suit against state’s attorney A federal appeals court on Monday blocked a lawsuit against Baltimore’s top prosecutor filed by five police officers who say she maliciously investigated and charged them in the death of a black man who suffered a fatal spinal injury in custody. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a ruling by a lower court judge, court records show. That judge had allowed key parts of the lawsuit against Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby to go forward. Mosby’s lawyers argued that as a prosecutor, she has immunity from the lawsuit. (AP)
it finally comes time to dig out the backlog,” Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine said. “This is yet another sign of the need to invest in infrastructure.” The first round of repairs will target Braddock Road, King Street and Eisenhower Avenue stations, but the project will close the entire southern portion of the Blue and Yellow lines from Memorial Day to Labor Day 2019, not only to rebuild the platforms but to accomplish a host of largescale projects that include the demolition of the unused Huntington south parking garage. The agency expects the rebuilding project to cost between $300 million and $400 million and be completed by the fall of 2021.

THE DISTRICT Lawyers for chef Mike Isabella and his partners have settled a lawsuit filed in federal court by a former employee who alleged that she was sexually harassed on the job, according to a joint statement. The financial terms of the settlement between Chloe Caras and Isabella’s restaurant company, Mike Isabella Concepts, are confidential, the statement says. “In settling this case, Ms. Caras met one of her central goals, which was to have MIC enter in a binding agreement obligating it to take corrective measures, including robust training, and to adopt policies to encourage a work environment free of sexual harassment,” Debra Katz, the attorney for Caras, said in the statement. Caras had alleged that Isabella and his partners called her “bitch” and “whore,” commented on the size of her buttocks and touched her without permission. Isabella said in the statement: “This agreement allows Chloe to focus on her bright future, and allows us to focus on a future in which all our valued employees will continue to flourish in our management ranks as we remain

Charles Steger, ex-Virginia Tech president, dies 1947-2018 Former Virginia Tech President Charles Steger Jr., who led the institution through a period of great change and faced both criticism and praise for his leadership during a 2007 mass shooting, has died, the university announced Monday. He was 70. Steger, a Virginia Tech graduate who spent most of his professional career at the university, died Sunday evening at his home in Blacksburg, the university said in a statement Monday morning. A cause of death was not provided. During his time as the university’s 15th president, from 2000 to 2014, Virginia Tech increased its enrollment, raised more than $1 billion in private funding, formed a school of biomedical engineering and joined the Atlantic Coast Conference, according to the university’s news release. Steger also led the university in the aftermath of the April 16, 2007, massacre, when a gunman killed 32 faculty members and students. At the time, it was the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. “He cared deeply for Virginia Tech and courageously led the Hokie Nation through a terrible tragedy,” Gov. Ralph Northam said of Steger. “His leadership in Virginia changed the landscape of higher education, and his strategic vision propelled Virginia Tech to be one of the finest research institutions in the world.” SARAH RANKIN (AP)

SCOTT WIGGERS (APAU HAWAII TOURS VIA AP)
Talk about a diplomatic misstep …
A man in the Leilani Estates subdivision near Pahoa, Hawaii, on Monday gets close to lava from the Kilauea volcano.
Hawaiians not in a rush to leave volcano slopes Residents near eruption say they have ‘come to terms’ with the risks PAHOA, HAWAII As lava crawled down Leilani Road, Cheryl Griffith stood in its path and placed a plant in a crack in the ground as an offering to the Native Hawaiian volcano goddess, Pele. Griffith lives in Leilani Estates, a subdivision on the Big Island where molten rock from the Kilauea volcano has burst through the ground, destroying more than two dozen homes and resulting in evacuation orders for nearly 2,000 people. But the 61-year-old did not leave. “I love this place, and I’ve been around the volcano for a while,”
Griffith said. “I’m just not one to rush off.” For many people outside Hawaii, it’s hard to understand why anyone would risk living near an active volcano. But the slopes of Kilauea offer affordable land and a lush rural setting that attract a hardy breed of independent Hawaiian. The landscape contrasts sharply with the state’s more expensive real estate on Oahu and Maui, and the bustling capital of Honolulu. Amber Makuakane, a 37-yearold teacher and single mother of two, lost her three-bedroom house to the lava. She grew up here and lived in the house for nine years. Her parents also live in Leilani Estates. “The volcano and the lava — it’s always been a part of my life,”

she said. “It’s devastating ... but I’ve come to terms with it.” On Sunday, some of the more than 1,700 people who evacuated were allowed to return briefly to gather medicine, pets and other necessities. They will be able to do so each day as long as authorities believe it is safe. The people in region are largely self-sufficient and understand the risks. Many cannot get homeowners insurance. Griffith said that is the hardest part of this lifestyle — they won’t be able to recoup losses. Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and has been erupting continuously since 1983. There’s no indication when this particular lava flow might stop or how far it might spread.
There aren’t that many cultures where putting a shoe on the dining table is acceptable, but for the Japanese there’s clear etiquette against even allowing outdoor shoes inside. That might explain the furor following a visit by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife, Akie Abe, to Israel last week. Abe was treated to a festive meal at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence. Dessert was a selection of chocolate pralines — served in a sculpted metal shoe. The dish enraged Japanese diplomats and Israeli officials. “This is disrespect of the first order,” an unnamed Israeli official told Yediot Aharonot newspaper. (TWP)

Trump pushes new spending plan to cut $15B POLITICS President Trump is sending a plan to Congress that calls for stripping more than $15 billion in previously approved spending, with the hope that it will temper conservative angst over ballooning budget deficits. Almost half of the proposed cuts would come from two accounts within the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) that White House officials said expired last year or are not expected to be drawn upon. An additional $800 million in cuts would come from money created by the Affordable Care Act in 2010 to test innovative payment and service delivery models. Those are just a handful of the more than 30 programs the White House is proposing to Congress for “rescission,” a process of culling back money that was previously authorized. Once the White House sends the request to Congress, lawmakers have 45 days to vote on the plan through a simple majority vote. Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., said conservatives were given assurances from the White House that this package would be the first of several, and said that lawmakers were anxious to get started on the cuts. Democrats have said they are watching the process with skepticism. Many have called for expanding programs such as CHIP, and are protective of the Affordable Care Act. POLITICS President Trump intends to announce his decision on the future of the Iran nuclear deal on Tuesday, days ahead of a self-imposed deadline and amid signals that he will withdraw the United States three years after the Obama administration signed the pact. Trump said in a Monday afternoon tweet that he will make a statement at the White House at 2 p.m. today. The announcement comes after a flurry of entreaties from European allies, including in-person pleas last week from French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, for Trump to reconsider his opposition to the deal and maintain support. But Trump has continued to rail against the 2015 agreement with Iran, which was also signed by five other nations — China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany — as well as the European Union. In a tweet Monday, Trump referred to a Boston Globe report that John Kerry, who led President Barack Obama’s negotiating team while serving as secretary of state, was continuing to work with foreign governments to influence the Trump administration. Trump wrote: “The United States does

not need John Kerry’s possibly illegal Shadow Diplomacy on the very badly negotiated Iran Deal. He was the one that created this MESS in the first place!” Last fall, Trump decertified the Iran deal, potentially allowing Congress to reimpose nuclearrelated economic sanctions on Tehran that had been lifted as part of the pact. But the White House elected not to press lawmakers to act on the threats, instead maintaining the leverage that such measures could come down the line if Iran refused to renegotiate. The president set a deadline of May 12 to make his decision. Supporters of the deal, including Macron, had hoped to persuade Trump to keep the
U.S. in the deal while a separate, side agreement was negotiated that could offer the president additional reassurances that Iran would take steps to cut support for terrorist groups. Critics, however, pushed Trump to follow through on his displeasure and end U.S. participation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a speech last week in which he called the agreement a “terrible deal” and predicted that Trump would “do the right thing.” Trump’s decision comes weeks before he is expected to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in a bid to curb that nation’s nuclear weapons program. nation+world Key Iran-Contra figure will be highest-profile president since Heston POLITICS Retired Lt. Col. Oliver North, the gung-ho Marine at the center of the Iran-Contra affair three decades ago, was named president Monday of the National Rifle Association, giving it star power as it faces a powerful backlash over the massacres in Florida and Las Vegas. North, 74, will be the biggest celebrity to lead the 5-millionmember gun lobby since actor Charlton Heston, who famously declared in 2000 that his guns would have to be taken “from my cold, dead hands.”

“Oliver North is a legendary warrior for American freedom, a gifted communicator and skilled leader,” NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre said. Momentum for gun control has been building since the mass shooting in Las Vegas last fall that killed 58 people and the Feb. 14 rampage at a Parkland, Fla., high school that left 17 dead. North was chosen by the NRA’s board of directors, which elects a president every two years, and is expected to assume office within the next several weeks. Inside Melania’s D.C. life President Trump and the first lady have separate schedules and different priorities

European and it’s not who she is.” The Trumps are often apart even during their free time, according to several people who know the couple’s schedules. At Mar-a-Lago on holidays and weekends, the president golfs or dines with politicians, business executives and media personalities, while Melania is often nowhere to be seen. According to several current and former aides, the president and first lady often don’t eat together in the White House either. “They spend very little to no time together,” said one longtime
friend of the president. Stephanie Grisham, Melania’s spokeswoman, disputed that claim. “Aside from the president’s solo trips, the family spends most evenings together.” She also played down the headlines about Trump’s alleged affairs and said Melania “is focused on being a mom. She’s focused on being a wife, and she’s focused on her role as first lady. And that’s it. The rest is just noise.” Melania grants few interviews and declined to speak for this article, but during the campaign she told The Washington Post that

she and her husband are “very independent,” adding, “We give ourselves and each other space.” According to several White House staff members, Melania has erected a de facto wall between the East Wing, where she is renovating her office and enjoying growing popularity, and the West Wing, where her husband works. “She seldom sets foot in the West Wing,” said one person with firsthand knowledge. Yet many political analysts believe that Trump will need Melania at his side if he wants to win again in 2020. Several polls have shown that as she becomes more visible, her popularity is rising. Twenty-two years after first coming to the U.S. to model, Melania is now one of the most photographed women in the world. “It’s the American Dream,” said Paolo Zampolli, who helped arrange for Melania to work in the U.S. fashion industry. “She really will become the queen of people’s hearts, like Princess Diana was. I think the world will be seeing more of her.” MARY JORDAN, EMILY HEIL
POLITICS Melania Trump on Monday gave her multi-pronged effort to promote the well-being of children a minimalist new motto: “BE BEST.” The first lady formally launched her long-awaited initiative after more than a year of reading to children, learning about babies born addicted to drugs and hosting a White House conversation on cyberbullying. “As a mother and as first lady, it concerns me that in today’s fastpaced and ever-connected world, children can be less prepared to express or manage their emotions and oftentimes turn to forms of destructive or addictive behavior such as bullying, drug addiction or even suicide,” she said in prepared remarks. The campaign will focus on the issues of well-being, social media and opioid abuse, she said. Modern first ladies typically highlight personal causes, from Nancy Reagan’s campaign to get kids to “Just Say No” to drugs to Michelle Obama’s signature “Let’s Move” campaign against childhood obesity. Melania has long shown her interest in children, visiting young hospital patients in the U.S. and abroad. Her promise to use her platform to focus on cyberbullying has been ridiculed given her husband’s habit of calling people names on Twitter, but she has said the criticism wouldn’t discourage her.
Melania Trump in recent weeks has been at the center of more high-profile events than usual.

WASHINGTON Donald and Melania Trump’s remarkably separate daily routines begin with him getting up around 5:30 a.m., watching cable news shows and tweeting. The first lady wakes in her own bedroom a bit later, according to two close friends of the Trumps. She then readies their 12-year-old son for school. Amid the noise and churn of the Trump administration — most recently about how the president paid money to silence Stormy Daniels — Melania Trump has settled into a quieter routine, often apart from the president, raising their son and carving out a place for herself in a most untraditional White House. The first lady has not directly addressed the affairs that Daniels and another woman, Karen McDougal, said they had with her husband. But she has noticeably begun to raise her profile, independent from the president’s. In recent weeks, Melania has been at the center of more highprofile events than during the entire previous year. She made her inaugural news conference in the White House Rose Garden on Monday and attended last month’s funeral of former first lady Barbara Bush by herself. While both Trumps are keenly aware of the power of visual images, some of the couple’s memorable moments together are awkward: Melania swatting his hand away on a tarmac, or caught on camera several times seeming to resist his outreach. “She is a dignified, private person, and she’ll deal with her personal life in private and it’s no one’s business,” said Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, a longtime friend of Melania’s. “They are not that couple that holds hands just because; she is old-world

Thank you teachers!
TUESDAY | 05.08.2018 | EXPRESS | 15
This Teacher Appreciation Week, let’s show our gratitude to the people who educate our children and lay the foundation for a strong society. Twenty-nine states still spend less on education than they did before the Great Recession. The teacher walkouts across the country to protest inadequate teaching and learning conditions and low pay should serve as a clarion call for making the investments our kids need. It doesn’t surprise us that teachers step in when elected officials fail to act. Teachers care deeply about finding ways to nurture joyful learning in all students. They show up for our students, digging deep into their own pockets to meet their students’ needs. They fight for the conditions that make our public schools safe and welcoming places where students are engaged, teachers want to teach and parents are happy to send their children. They help mold our next generation and our future. Teachers matter to our students, our families and our communities. So today, on Teacher Appreciation Day, we say thank you. #TeacherAppreciationWeek #PublicSchoolProud

Protective service: Nats wise not to let pitchers work late He got into minimal trouble, allowing a single, then tallied his 15th strikeout. But Scherzer was yanked by first-year manager Dave Martinez because he had thrown 111 pitches. The Nats won 5-4 on a walkoff single by Wilmer Difo, but Scherzer was not credited with a victory. Was the hook for Scherzer long-term planning? “Absolutely,” Martinez said. The Nationals have been well-known for trying to preserve their pitching assets for many years, rather than maximize one season. This past week, the Mets released the once-great Matt Harvey, the pitcher they drove hard in 2015 on their run to the World Series in his first year back after Tommy John surgery. The Nats took the opposite tack with Stephen Strasburg, shutting him down in 2012. Entering his start against the Padres (late Monday), Strasburg had helped the Nats win 55 of his past 71 starts. It’s hard to prove anything in baseball. But the Nats being right in handling Strasburg and

Max Scherzer remains standing. That’s what matters. In the National League this season, when the disabled list — which claimed star pitchers Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers and Jacob deGrom of the Mets on Sunday — has more long-term relevance than the early-season standings, that might be the one true way to measure results. And that’s the way the Nationals are playing it — cautiously — even if that spoils some fun in May. On Sunday, the crowd at Nationals Park roared as Scherzer struck out 15 Phillies batters in 61/3 innings. Twenty years ago to the day, Kerry Wood of the Cubs tied a record Roger Clemens achieved twice by fanning 20 in a game, a total that Scherzer matched on May 11, 2016. The Nationals led 1-0 in the seventh inning Sunday, and Scherzer seemed on the verge of another victory and another 20-strikeout day.

the Mets being brutally wrong with Harvey seems very close. The defending NL champion Dodgers are already severely wounded. They lost All-Star shortstop Corey Seager to season-ending elbow surgery last week. Kershaw’s injury — left biceps tendinitis — is worrisome because of its proximity to the elbow. Kershaw already has gone on the DL the past two years with disk problems. Los Angeles starters HyunJin Ryu and Rich Hill are already on the disabled list. As other teams are getting injured more, the Nats are finally starting to get well:
Anthony Rendon returned to the lineup over the weekend. Uncertainty still surrounds Daniel Murphy (knee rehab) and Adam Eaton (bone bruise), but the Nats have used early injuries to unearth other assets. Matt Adams hit his eighth homer of the year Sunday, when Difo played the hero. The Nats have their problems, their slumpers and their slow-to-heal players. But for now, their world hasn’t been turned upside down. And every day, they try to keep it that way. Follow Thomas Boswell on Twitter @ThomasBoswellWP

Green brushes off violent ‘joke’
TNT analyst Charles Barkley had to apologize this postseason for saying he wanted to punch pesky Warriors forward Draymond Green. Andrew Polk, a Ruston, La.-born comedian, went a step further Sunday, tweeting that he hoped Green “gets shot in the face as soon as he leaves the arena.” Polk apologized, saying it was an attempt at an “edgy joke.” Green responded by telling reporters, “I just pray that he gets the help that he needs.” (EXPRESS)

Houston leads the series 3-1, which means point guard Chris Paul is on the verge of getting out of the second round for the first time in his career. The Rockets’ point guard showed urgency in a Game 4 win Sunday, snagging 12 rebounds and scoring a game-high 27 points despite 1-for-6 shooting on 3s. Utah might have Ricky Rubio (hamstring) available for the first time in the series.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr started his “death lineup” for the first time all season in Game 4 on Sunday, playing Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andre Iguodala, Kevin Durant and Draymond Green on the court from the jump as Golden State took a 3-1 lead. Kerr said he plans to do it again, which could lead to another explosive night for Durant, who scored 38 on 15-of-27 shooting. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

The NFL players’ union said Monday it has fielded a grievance on behalf of free agent safety Eric Reid against one team, reportedly the Bengals. Stan Van Gundy will not return to Detroit as coach or president of basketball operations, the Pistons announced Monday, with owner Tom Gores saying it was a difficult decision. Van Gundy wanted to return, Gores said, but “a change is necessary to regain our momentum.” The Pistons (39-43) made the playoffs just once in four seasons under Van Gundy. (AP)
Panthers defensive backs coach Curtis Fuller resigned last week amid an NFL investigation into workplace misconduct sparked by allegations of sexual harassment against owner Jerry Richardson. ESPN reported Friday that Fuller quit when he was confronted with findings of “inappropriate” conduct toward women. (EXPRESS)
After closing out a five-game series against Boston with a 3-1 win Sunday, Tampa Bay is back in the conference finals. Maryland defending both titles After sweeping the men’s and women’s Division I lacrosse championships last spring, Maryland’s dominance carried into the NCAA tournament selection shows Sunday. The men’s and women’s teams each earned the top overall seed in their tournaments. The women did so on the heels of a Big Ten tournament title victory Sunday, while the men used a 12-win season to climb to the top spot for a third straight tournament. Here’s a look at each bracket. The Terps’ three losses came to No. 2 seed Albany, Ohio State (no bid) and fifth-seeded Johns Hopkins. Saturday’s loss to the Blue Jays came after the Terps beat Johns Hopkins in three overtimes in the regular season. Maryland will host a first-round game Sunday against the winner of Wednesday’s play-in game between Robert Morris and Canisius. Big East champion Georgetown (12-4) visits Johns Hopkins on Sunday. Virginia (12-5) got an at-large bid despite a 2-4 record in ACC play and will visit No. 6 seed Loyola (Md.) on Saturday.
The Maryland women earned the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye after beating Penn State 21-12 on Sunday for a third straight Big Ten tournament title. In an expanded 27-team field, the Terps play at home Sunday against the winner of Friday night’s game between Denver and High Point. Senior attack Megan Whittle, above, the school’s all-time leading scorer, had a career-high eight goals in the conference championship and was named tournament MVP. She pulled within one goal of former Temple star Gail Cummings’ alltime Division I record of 289 goals. Maryland, which finished 23-0 on its way to last year’s national title, is 18-1 this year and only lost to North Carolina, 16-15 in overtime, during the regular season.

$7 or $8 smoothie. But blending your own is not only easier on your wallet, but a way to customize them and make several batches at a time. Whether you’re making a nutrient-dense meal replacement, a protein-packed workout booster or a healthy but sweet treat, the flavor combinations are endless. A smoothie contains three essential elements: a liquid, a base and a chill factor. To take your blends to the next level, to maximize nutrient density and to amp up the “wow” flavor factor, use this handy guide to help get you blending order in which you would add them to the blender. (For blenders in which you invert the cup onto a blade assembly, reverse this process.) TESS MASTERS AND BECKY KRYSTAL (THE WASHINGTON POST) 1 Liquids
Pour liquids (1 to 2 cups) in first for efficient blending. Examples: coconut water, milk, juice, kefir, kombucha, herbal or green tea Sprinkle in spices, herbs, citrus zest, natural extracts and flavorings and sweeteners. For a nutritional boost, sprinkle in superfood powders, chia, hemp, flax, green powders, protein powder or cold-pressed oils. 2 Base
Add soft and hard produce, and fibrous foods such as nuts and dried fruits, then frozen fruits. The heart of the base is 2 to 3 cups of fruits and vegetables, as well as raw and sprouted nuts and seeds (1/4 to 1/2 cup). Include an element of cream:
avocado, banana, mango, silken tofu, nut butter, raw nuts (such as cashews and blanched almonds, 1/4 to 1/2 cup) or yogurt (1/2 to 1 cup) If you like greens, consider 1 to 2 cups. Examples: spinach, romaine, radish greens, collards, chard, kale, beet greens, dandelion, arugula, parsley, cilantro, mint or basil
freeze in glass jars. Flavor your ice. Freeze cubes of leftover fruit and vegetable juice, milk and tea. Use instead of plain ice for a flavor or nutrient boost. Freeze your vegetables. Our taste buds are temperaturesensitive, so 1/2 cup of frozen broccoli can be incorporated without altering the flavor.
3 Ice
The ice goes in last to help pull all the other ingredients down into the blades for even mixing. 4 Cold tips
Make ahead. Consuming smoothies right away maximizes nutrient value. However, they can be refrigerated in sealed glass containers for a few hours or overnight. For longer storage,
5 Hot additions
Warm it up. Adding foods such as fennel, cinnamon, ginger and cayenne not only balances cooling blends but also gives smoothies a nice kick. Add a body bonus. Adding 1/2 teaspoon of probiotic powder or the contents of 1 probiotic capsule helps balance the natural sugar content of sweet smoothies, aids

like a pro. The building-block elements below are listed in the
High-intensity interval training (HITT), which alternates short periods of intense exercise with longer periods of moderate recovery periods, can be daunting for first-time exercisers. Another option, low-intensity steady state (LISS), also known as “cardio,” is any repetitive motion for 30 to 45 minutes at 50 to 60 percent of your maximum heart rate, according to physical therapist Kevin McGuinness. Because it is associated with fewer injuries, McGuinness says, LISS is particularly appropriate for individuals recovering from an injury affecting a weight-bearing part of the body, such as an ankle, or the knee or hip. It can also be the answer for people recovering from surgery. CAROLEE BELKIN WALKER (TWP)
6 Healthful ideas
Rotate your greens. To avoid oxalic toxicity (which can deplete calcium from bones and teeth), blend a variety of greens. Juicing vs. blending. Juicing removes skins and piths, which offers a nutrient-dense experience with gentler digestion. Blending retains all the nutrients in skins, piths and seeds; meanwhile, the fiber slows down the uptake of sugars.

She’s wrapped up with a wet blanket Q. My brother-in-law is determined to see the negative. I know he loves my sister, but he always rains on her parade. She wants to make travel plans or compliments something we see on TV or has a fun work story, and he comments how it’s too expensive/ not realistic/her boss is still a jerk. I don’t know how she puts up with it, and it makes me want to smack him! ANNOYED SIS You don’t know how she puts up with it, yet that’s pretty much the key. Maybe she takes it with a grain of salt; perhaps it’s their shtick. Maybe she even finds it endearing. You could broach it with her, but unless you see evidence that it’s truly harmful to her or it’s part of a larger pattern of controlling or emotionally toxic behavior on his part, it’s hard to justify doing much about it in terms
of their relationship. (She may just be content with her Eeyore.) That said, you are free to develop your own relationship with your brother-in-law, shutting him down respectfully when you feel his comments are rude, challenging him where you see fit, or sometimes just abstaining from the dinner/hangout/Netflix binge — especially if it helps you resist the urge to smack him.
emotional after physical intimacy. It’s usually like vulnerability, feeling very exposed. I do not feel very sad per se, but just intense and sometimes like I am going to cry. Rather than cuddle, I want to get away and be by myself. I’m dating someone I really care about and don’t know how to do this without hurting his feelings. BROKEN OPEN If you really care about this person, you’ve got a great opportunity in not pushing him away. If you want a chance to connect, this is it. Feeling vulnerable after sex is not something to be ashamed of — in fact, it’s probably evolutionary in order to encourage bonding, and the mind-body connection is such that this might be unlocking pent-up feelings that you’re holding in during daily life. If you try to figure out why you want to be by yourself during those times (Embarrassment? Awkwardness? Fear of getting hurt?), it can help you understand what you’re guarding against. But ultimately, if you want to grow your relationship with this person, it would be tough to do so if you keep disappearing — emotionally and physically — during times of such potential connection. entertainment Gender equality issues loom at festival in wake of Weinstein scandal FILM The experience of watching a few dozen or more films inside two weeks at the Cannes Film Festival can be jarring, exhilarating and exhausting — even for those who live and breathe cinema. Jessica Chastain, an actress and regular attendee of the French Riviera festival, last year reflected on her time spent on the Cannes jury. She was both overwhelmed and disappointed. “This is the first time I’ve watched 20 films in 10 days, and
I love movies,” Chastain said. “The one thing I really took from this experience is how the world views women, from the female characters that I saw represented. And it was quite disturbing to me, to be honest.” Ahead of the 71st Cannes festival, which begins today and runs through May 19, Chastain’s piercing criticism still hovers over a festival that finds itself in tumult. Questions of gender equality are especially pointed at Cannes, which for the past 20 years had been a seaside playground for Harvey Weinstein, long one of the festival’s most ubiquitous operators. Cannes remains perhaps the most supreme and heightened

realm of moviedom, but its rarified stature has been increasingly challenged by the era of #MeToo and the age of Netflix.
Festival director Thierry Fremaux, who called the Weinstein revelations an “earthquake” for Cannes, has promised that
this year heralds “a great renewal.” The jury, headed by Cate Blanchett, includes Ava DuVernay, Kristen Stewart, Lea Seydoux and Burundian singer Khadja Nin. But this year’s selections, featuring just three female directors among the 21 Palme d’Or contenders, have done little to quell pleas for more female storytellers at the prestigious film festival. “We want to keep pace with a world that’s changing,” Fremaux said Monday in response to criticism of the festival lineup. “The cinema has always been in the hands of men. … There will be more and more [female filmmakers] in the future.” JAKE COYLE (AP)

Kennedy Center rescinds honors given to Bill Cosby In a first for the Kennedy Center, its board of trustees voted Monday to rescind the high-profile awards it has given to Bill Cosby, who was convicted last month on three counts of sexual assault. Cosby received a Kennedy Center Honor in 1998 for lifetime achievement in the arts. In 2009, he earned the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. “His actions have overshadowed the very career accomplishments these distinctions … intend to recognize,” the arts center said in a statement. We’ll have lots of sunshine, light winds (from the east around 5 to 10 mph), and comfortable highs between 70 and 75, which is very close to normal.
