University in Winston-Salem, N.C. Back then, openings disappeared overnight and companies were calling recent graduates to rescind offers. Though hiring is not back to its pre-recession level and plenty of seniors are leaving campuses without jobs, this year’s graduates are less likely to face the disappointment of moving back in with mom and dad, or being forced to work at a coffee shop to pay off loans.

D[m Oeha The class of 2012 is leaving college with something that many graduates since the start of the Great Recession have lacked: jobs. To the relief of graduating seniors — and their anxious parents — the outlook is brighter than it has been in four years. Campus job fairs were packed this spring and more companies are hiring. Students aren’t just finding good opportunities, some are weighing multiple offers. In some ways, members of the class of 2012 got lucky. They arrived on campus in September 2008, the same month that Wall Street investment bank Lehman Brothers collapsed, touching off a financial crisis that exacerbated the recession. On campus, they were largely insulated from the collapsing U.S. economy. While older brothers and sisters graduated into a dismal job market, they took shelter in classes. For many graduates, spirits are more upbeat, and the employment outlook is especially promising. “It’s just been such a dramatic change from what we saw in 2008,” says Mercy Eyadiel, who oversees career development at Wake Forest

Students leave college with better prospects than previous grads

Though hiring is not back to its pre-recession level, many graduates are less likely to work low-paying jobs or have to move back in with mom and dad to pay off school loans.

9^Wd]_d] ;nf[YjWj_edi Students’ expectations have also changed. That dream job might just be a dream. Seniors are instead focusing on stepping-stone positions that will hopefully lead to better opportunities. Others are willing to move to less desirable locations and settle for lower salaries. Pay for new graduates fell 10 percent during the recession, according to the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University. Few expect it to climb back soon. (AP)

“I was nervous that my college degree would go to waste,” says Laura Mascari, who arrived on the University of Delaware’s Newark campus in the fall of 2008. Mascari will work in marketing — her major — for chemicals giant DuPont. Students today also have more confidence. Two years ago, career directors say seniors were so afraid of the recession that they flocked to graduate schools to wait it out. That trend is reversing. The number of U.S. students taking admissions exams for graduate business school and law school are down 8 percent and 16 percent. SCOT T MAYEROWITZ (AP)

Trading Blunder Costs JPMorgan 3 high-ranking execs to resign after bank reports $2B in losses D[m Oeha Three high-ranking executives at JPMorgan Chase are expected to leave their jobs this week after a trading blunder cost the bank $2 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday. The Journal, citing people familiar with the situation, reported that one of the executives is Ina Drew, who for seven years has run the risk-management division at the bank responsible for the loss. The other two identified by the newspaper are an executive in charge of the London desk that placed the trades and a managing director on that team. The bank did not immediately return a message. The $2 billion loss, disclosed on Thursday by CEO Jamie Dimon, has been an embarrassment for the bank and led lawmakers and critics of the banking industry to call for tougher regulation of Wall Street. On Friday, investors shaved almost 10 percent off JPMorgan’s stock price. Dimon said in a TV interview aired Sunday that he was “dead wrong” when he dismissed concerns about the bank’s trading last month.

Ef[d je ?dgk_h_[i JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon told NBC on Sunday that he supported giving the government the authority to dismantle a failing big bank and wipe out shareholder equity. But he stressed that JPMorgan, the largest bank in the U.S., is “very strong.” Dimon said the bank is open to inquiries from regulators. He has also promised, in an email to bank employees and in a call with stock analysts, to get to the bottom of what happened and learn from the mistake. (AP)

“We made a terrible, egregious mistake,” Dimon said in an interview that was taped Friday and aired on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “There’s almost no excuse for it.” Dimon said he did not know the extent of the problem when he said in April that the concerns were a “tempest in a teapot.” The loss came in the past six weeks. Dimon has said it came from trading in so-called credit derivatives and was designed to hedge against financial risk, not to make a profit for the bank. Dimon conceded to NBC that the bank “hurt ourselves and our credibility” and expects to “pay the price for that.” (AP)

Syrian forces killed at least five people when they raided a Sunni farming village on Sunday, torching homes and looting shops in what activists said is a sign of worsening relations among the country’s religious groups. Tensions stemming from the 14-month-old uprising against President Bashar Assad also touched off clashes across the border in Lebanon as the revolt threatened to morph into a broader conflict. Two board members want workers to pay into their own funds JhWdifehjWj_ed

Metro’s finance committee on Thursday endorsed the agency’s proposed $2.5 billion annual budget and promised a close look at Metro’s pension costs. Union employees of the transit agency do not contribute to their pensions, which are fully funded by Metro, and some board members are urging a change in policy. In fiscal 2013, the cost of the pension program is projected to rise 34 percent to $150 million. The budget is expected to be approved by Metro’s full board in two weeks. Richard Sarles, Metro’s general manager, said in a statement that the budget “continues the path of improvements we’ve made in safety and rebuilding our system. “We are investing more to improve the day-to-day customer experience through increased preventive maintenance of escala-

The fiscal 2013 budget also includes spending $67 million to buy 95 new diesel hybrid buses to replace nearly 100 Orion VI buses, a model plagued by problems. Two of the Orion VI buses recently caught fire. Since the incidents, Metro has taken its nearly 100 Orion VI buses out of service and plans to get rid of them and buy hybrid diesel buses by New Flyer. The new batch of buses is expected to arrive in the fall, if the final budget is approved. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

tors, enhanced bus corridor service and added rail rush hour service in preparation for the Silver Line,” the new rail route under construction in Northern Virginia.

The concerns about pensions come as Metro starts to negotiate with Local 689, which represents about 8,000 of its employees, whose contract expires at the end of June. Management has said that workers shouldn’t expect to see a pay increase given that the agency was ordered by a court to give a 9 percent pay increase the past

three years. Metro said it has been seeing a rise in pension costs in large part because of changes in the financial markets that required it to put more money into pensions. After the committee meeting, Metro board member Muriel Bowser, a Democrat who represents Ward 4 on the D.C. Council in addition to serving on the transit board, said she’s concerned about the rising pension and labor costs. “We can’t keep paying the costs,” she said. “They’re too high. It comes out of jurisdictions and riders.” She said employees of local governments in the region “have been asked to share more of the pension costs, but that is not happening” with Metro. Board member Artis Hampshire-Cowan, who represents Prince George’s County, agreed. “People today don’t have pensions they’re not paying into,” she said. “I’d like to see Metro come in line with area jurisdictions. Metro is the only major agency that has employees not paying into their pensions.” DANA HEDGPETH (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Last month, Metro approved across-the-board fare increases for riders who use its parking facilities, despite complaints from customers about poor service and a jump in prices. The higher fares go into effect July 1, and those increases along with a $47 million increase in subsidies from local governments will help close that gap. (T WP)

With New Limits Come Options Architects say height act stunts District’s economic potential MWi^_d]jed When proposals surface about changing the Heights of Buildings Act of 1910 — Mayor Vincent C. Gray sparked the latest discussion last month — fears about views of the National Mall and the city’s historical L’Enfant plan inevitably follow. An Empire State Building would come to K Street! Pennsylvania Avenue would become a dreary office canyon! A commenter on a Washington Post story last month about lifting the cap put it this way: “The White House will look like an ant compared to skyscrapers a block away if they do away with the height limits.” There are economic and aesthetic arguments on both sides of the issue. Michael Hickok, senior principal at Hickok Cole Architects, said the rule limits not only the height of most of the city’s buildings to 130 feet, but the capacity of its retail

JAMES M. WRIGHT/PAGE SOUTHERLAND PAGE

?d 8h_[\

7d ;n[hY_i[ _d 9h[Wj_l_jo But what if the height act did vanish? If it were completely lifted and radical ideas were proposed right in the heart of the city, how extreme could the changes be to D.C.’s skyline? To find out, we constructed a hypothetical query for some local commercial architects. The exercise ideas were more whimsy than real. One envisions a 400-foot headquarters for all the country’s Political Action Committees, above. Another incorporates a federally owned and operated casino. But the exercise did allow Washington architects to do something they typically aren’t accustomed to: Let it all hang out. (T WP)

market and street life. “Height in this city isn’t about height. It’s about density,” Hickok said. “Everyone wants to have a city that can support a lot of retail space, a lot of residential space. But now you go to New York, and that endless retail is supported by millions of square feet of residential space and office space, because they can go so high. And one of the reasons we can’t get enough lively retail in D.C. is that we can’t go higher than 130 feet.” Radical architecture isn’t proposed in Washington because it doesn’t make financial sense under the height act; every square foot must be maximized because there is no room to spare. It’s hard to find a Washington architect who considers changes to the height act likely, even though Gray suggested to members of Congress last month that just allowing maybe another story to downtown buildings or creating new limits in peripheral areas of Northeast and Southeast would “hugely help with economic development.” JONATHAN O’CONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Two Accused in Retail Theft Ring MWi^_d]jed The young women walked so quickly, grabbed items from the shelves so confidently, that employees at the Glenarden J.C. Penney might have thought they were out shopping for Mother’s Day. Except this was their second trip to the store that day. And Mom probably did not ask for $20,000 in perfume and makeup. The women, police said at a news conference Friday, were professional shoplifters — bit players in an organized ring of cosmetically inclined thieves. Three and four times a day, police said, Darquesha Wilkinson, 19, and Latasha Mungo, 24,

both of the District, would walk into department stores across the region, swipe high-end perfume, lotions and makeup, then sell them on the streets at a discount, often out of the trunks of their cars. And until Tuesday — when a J.C. Penney loss-prevention employee recognized the pair as suspects in previous shoplifting incidents — they hadn’t been charged there,

blending in with other shoppers because they were charming and well-dressed, police said. “That’s what they do. This is their job,” said Sgt. Aubrey Thompson, who heads the Prince George’s County Police’s Organized Retail Crime Unit. “It only takes them but 30 seconds.” Investigators seized nearly $20,000 in perfume, makeup and other beauty products when they arrested the women Tuesday at the J.C. Penney at Woodmore Towne Centre, Thompson said. “They’re very charming ladies,” Thompson said. “If I worked in a store as a manager, I wouldn’t have any reason to suspect them.” MATT ZAPOTOSKY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

7 D[m B_]^j The District is brightening up the city’s alleys with new lights that are expected to last longer and cut emissions. The D.C. Department of Transportation is wrapping up an effort to replace 1,360 incandescent bulbs with light-emitting diode fixtures along the alleys it maintains. Mayor Vincent Gray and other officials will install one of the last fixtures in the project on Monday in the Mount Pleasant area. (AP)

Plan Now, Rest In Peace Later F[hiedWb <_dWdY[ Of all the milestones we’ve discussed, there’s only one you’re certain to be part of: a funeral. Because it’s a dreaded topic, few people discuss their wishes before it’s too late to prepare. “Start talking about deat h now,” said Josh Slocum, executive director of Funeral Consumers Alliance. “It should be a household conversa-

tion. It’s not disrespectful or morbid to talk about funeral prices. Treating funerals like a taboo subject makes it taboo.” Experts weigh in on how to start talking and planning for the undertaker.

JWba 7Xekj ?j Dem The first step is talking about what you want. While we plan for college and weddings, few of us discuss what casket we want for our burial. “A death is a high-pressure kind of event. You’re dealing with the emotional issues and you’re not making choices in an informed way,” says Anthony

:[Wb >kd j[h

Adem j^[ BWmi

Visit funeral homes before you need one because prices vary widely. In one area, Slocum found that: “For the same exact simple cremation or burial, prices varied from $700 to $4,050. It is extremely important for people to shop around by calling and asking for prices.”

The Funeral Rule, a national law, requires funeral homes to give you a list of prices over the phone or a price sheet. “They are no longer allowed to force to you to buy an all-inclusive package,” Slocum says. Giorgianni agreed, saying, “This law is designed to stop funeral homes from taking advantage of you at a very stressful time.” According to the Federal Trade Commission’s most recent report, 22 percent of funeral homes still violate this rule. Ask for prices and know your rights.

Did you know you can bring your own casket to a funeral home? Or that no state requires embalming? “Caskets aren’t even required” in most states, Slocum says. “You can rent the coffin, and some funeral homes will let you display in a nice casket and then use a less elaborate burial container,” Giorgianni says. “For cremation, law requires that they provide an alternative container,” meaning one that isn’t expensive or for display. Visit Finalrights.org to find out the minimums you need for burial.

I[Wb[Z 9Wia[ji An expensive vault or a special sealed casket won’t do anything for the body of your loved one. “None of these will prevent decomposition or keep out air and water,” Slocum said. “[They] drain your wallet. Honest funeral directors will tell you this.” K ATHERINE BOYLE ( THE WASHINGTON POST )

As Zuckerberg turns a year older, he’s proved youth has been on his side D[m Oeha Don’t let the hoodie and sneakers fool you. Mark Zuckerberg is no wetbehind-the-ears CEO. Facebook’s chief executive turns 28 on Monday, setting in motion the social network’s biggest week ever. The company is expected to start selling stock to the public for the first time and begin trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market on Friday. The IPO could value Facebook at nearly $100 billion, making it worth more than such iconic companies as Disney, Ford and Kraft Foods. At 28, Zuckerberg is exactly half the age of the average S&P 500 CEO, according to executive search firm Spencer Stuart. With eight years on the job, he’s logged more time as leader than the average CEO, whose tenure is a little more than seven years, according to Spencer Stuart. Even so, the pressures of running a public company will undoubtedly take some getting used to. Once Facebook begins selling stock, Zuckerberg will be expected to please a host of new stakeholders, including Wall Street investment firms, hedge funds and pension funds who will pressure him

8WYaijeho Facebook, of course, got its start in Mark Zuckerberg’s messy Harvard dorm room in early 2004. Known as Thefacebook.com back in those days, the site was created to help Harvard students — and later other college students — connect with one another online. The scrappy website later grew to include high-schoolers, then anyone else with an Internet connection. Today more than 900 million people log in at least once a month, making Facebook the world’s definitive social network. (AP)

to keep the company growing.

8[oedZ >_i O[Whi Young as he may seem — especially in that hooded sweatshirt — Zuckerberg will be about the same age as Michael Dell and older than Steve Jobs when those two took their companies, Dell Inc.

and Apple Inc., public. In his years as Facebook’s CEO he’s met world leaders, rode a bull in Vietnam while on vacation, started learning Mandarin Chinese and, as a personal challenge, wore a tie for the better part of a year. All along, Zuckerberg has shown a maturity beyond his years. As the site grew rapidly and caught the eye of big media and rival Internet companies, Zuckerberg consistently rebuffed mouth-watering buyout offers, including from Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. People who’ve observed Zuckerberg closely say his age is an asset. His is the generation that grew up with social networking, with computers all around them and the Internet as something that’s always existed. Many of his employees are younger than he is, as are a lot of the up-andcoming technology entrepreneurs with whom he competes. “I don’t think you could build a company like this if you were an old guy like me,” says David Kirkpatrick,

a 59-year-old author who chronicled the company’s early history in “The Facebook Effect.” “It’s the willingness to take risks, the willingness to abide by a very contemporary vision ... I don’t think that he’s too young. I think most CEOs are too old.”

>eeZ_[ C[djWb_jo Obviously, Zuckerberg still has a lot to learn. As part of Facebook’s pre-IPO “roadshow” last week, Zuckerberg visited several venerable East Coast financial institutions wearing his signature hoodie. While Silicon Valley insiders defend his fashion choice, others saw it as a sign of immaturity. Was it, as some speculated, a sign of a rebellious 20-something acting out? For Michael Pachter, analyst at Wedbush Securities, Zuckerberg’s attitude and attire symbolizes “a level of aloofness to stakeholders.” “He seems very customer-focused and very employee-focused. I am not sure he cares about anyone else. ... If he’s going to go public, he has to answer to shareholders,” Pachter says. “That’s why Google hired Eric Schmidt. That’s why Steve Jobs was ultimately forced out of Apple.” Zuckerberg has done well for himself so far, but he’ll be pulled in many directions once Facebook is public. “There is going to be a tremendous amount of scrutiny on this company,” said Rebecca Lieb, analyst at the Altimeter Group. “Who really is qualified” to carry such a weight? (AP)

Too Young To Fail?

Below is a look at how the stocks of some recently public companies are faring as Facebook makes its big move. The companies are all loosely Webrelated, though their businesses vary.

Yelp Inc., a user-reviews company, leaped 64 percent from its IPO price on its opening day March 2. Since then, it’s remained above the IPO price — 35 percent higher at Friday’s close.

Zynga Inc., a developer of online games like “FarmVille,” dipped below its IPO price on its opening trading day in December. As of Friday, it was 25 percent lower than its $10 IPO price.

The online deals company Groupon has fluctuated heavily since its November IPO, jumping as high as $31.14, but currently sits at $9.90 — down 51 percent from its IPO price.

In a possible harbinger for Facebook, professional-oriented social network LinkedIn has greatly exceeded expectations, more than doubling its $45 IPO on its first day and sitting at $107.23 as of Friday’s close. (AP)

Ifehji :Wb[ >kdj[h When the former Capital was tabbed to take over for Bruce Boudreau on Nov. 28, many wondered if his defensive style of hockey would resonate with the Caps — a team who rebuked Boudreau’s attempts at dropping an offensive style for more responsible play. Hunter’s first few months behind the bench didn’t show signs of the new defensive style sinking in, but during the playoffs the Caps excelled. Washington routinely won onegoal games, the Caps had the sixth-best penalty kill in the postseason through round two and Washington led all playoff teams in blocked shots. The Caps bought in and Hunter’s system provided something Boudreau could never get out of his team – true playoff hockey. The only question is whether or not Hunter wants to return for a second season.

When he took over the Capitals’ net at the start of the playoffs, Holtby had played just 21 NHL games. Holtby, who earned a .922 save percentage in 14 postseason games, now leaves for the summer as a potential No. 1 goaltender and the reason why the Capitals likely won’t seek to resign veteran goalie Tomas Vokoun. After the Capitals lost goalie Semyon Varlamov through a trade, many wondered if the once-deep goalie talent was depleted. Holtby is proof it’s stronger than ever.

Beagle started as a fringe player who barely made the roster out of training camp. He then turned into a stable fourth liner under Hunter, but it wasn’t until the playoffs that Beagle began to prove his worth. The do-it-all defensive forward became a go-to guy on the penalty kill and during late-game situations where the Caps were holding a lead. He was one of the best faceoff men for the Caps and as his play intensified, so did his ice time. Expect Beagle to be a major cog in the Caps’ future as a defense-first squad.

this one’s a bit different. Instead of bullying their way through the regular season, the Capitals survived to claim the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference. Washington battled past the Boston Bruins in seven games and took the No. 1 seeded New York Rangers to the brink of elimination on Saturday. Considering the roller-coaster season the team endured, the once bleak future appears bright again. Here’s a few of the reasons for optimism over the summer, and a few lowlights from the postseason. REED S. ALBERS (FOR E X PRES S)

7b[n I[c_d

In typical Semin fashion, the ultratalented winger showed up for one stretch of games and disappeared for another. Against the Bruins, Semin turned in one of the strongest postseasons he’s had in years, scoring three goals in the Caps’ first-round series win. Then against the Rangers he went MIA, tallying just one assist in Game 3 and finishing a minus-two in Game 7. Semin’s next contract was on the line this postseason, and now general manager George McPhee must figure out what to do with the Russian sniper. Semin will likely see offers from the Russian Kontinental Hockey League, but whether or not he’s worth another oneyear deal for a few millions dollars is for McPhee, and other NHL GMs, to decide.

After being voted to his first-ever All-Star Game, Wideman turned into a complete dud for the Caps. The defenseman scored just two goals since the All-Star Break, and during the playoffs was a liability with defensive partner Jeff Schultz. He finished the postseason with three assists, but it’s his minus-seven rating — and a sequence where both Schultz and Widemen let up on an icing touch that turned into a Rangers goal — that fans will remember this summer. Wideman is an unrestricted free agent this summer, and with what appears to be a healthy market, the Capitals may decide to bring in someone else following this postseason performance.

The full severity and complexity of the injury is not yet known, Johnson said, but Ramos will miss most of, if not all of, the remainder of the season. Two things. I start with what do our customers expect. Secondly, from a process perspective, I understand what business process is required to deliver performance to the customers’ expectations. Then you sweat all the details to make sure you operate that process effectively.

How has your leadership evolved over the years?

As we evolve, we learn to empower people more and not less. The Pygmalion Effect is the greatest sin a leader can commit. If you expect too little of people, that’s what you’ll get. As I’ve grown, I’ve learned to recognize the talent in people and the importance of empowering them. We’re more successful as a team when we have very high expectations. VANES SA SMALL ( THE

How do you determine the process?

One organization I ran was a repair operation, so the culture within the company was to focus on minimizing the mean time to repair. So, to have a two-hour outage was better than a four-hour outage. >[WZ e\ j^[ 9bWiiheec The latest trends in teaching degrees open up worlds of new possibilities =hWZkWj[ :[]h[[i Today’s teaching degrees are anything but cookie-cutter. The industry trend toward not-so-textbook master’s programs helps education professionals specialize in what secondary schools need most: Strong school leaders as well as teachers who can reach students from a variety of backgrounds. These focused teaching degrees offer more flexibility in finding a job — and perhaps a bigger paycheck. Even some teachers-in-training might not know the full slate of possibilities, says Christopher Kamar, 28, who will earn a master’s in

education leadership from George Mason University in December. “People who have been through their first career and are looking into teaching or some field in education are looking at a lot more options than just being in the classroom or being certified in a specific subject,” says Kamar, who was poised for a pharmacology career before he started substitute teaching.

;ZkYWj_ed B[WZ[hi^_f Kamar’s options led him to enroll in GMU’s master’s in education leadership (Gse.gmu.edu) with an eye toward leading one of Fairfax County’s six pre-professional academies, which are high schools with classes that help students enter the workforce. Kamar now teaches a pharmacy technician course at one of them, West Potomac High in Alexandria.

The education leadership program targets teachers who want to work in school administration, perhaps as a principal or a superintendent. The George Washington University, Howard University and the University of Maryland also offer education leadership degrees. “Most people will be looking

Besides covering such education-degree staples as curriculum development, students learn to manage both finances and employees. “They learn how to analyze schools and school districts from a more general perspective than the view of an individual classroom teacher,” Brazer says. Next, students identify problem

areas at the schools where they’re interning and create and implement action plans to address them. “The internship piece is really what appeals to me,” Kamar says. “The activities they have outlined for us and the standards that we have to meet really give us an advantage as far as what it’s like to be a real administrator.”

The answer: A gray sliver of facial hair still associated with a game show more than a decade after it’s been shaved off. What is Alex Trebek’s mustache? Indeed, “mustache” was the first word that sprang to mind when CNN’s Lizzy O’Leary — a contestant on this week’s “Jeopardy! Power Players Week” — was asked about Trebek. Of course, even O’Leary acknowledged that her answer doesn’t apply anymore. But it says something about the lasting power of “Jeopardy!” that it’s hard to picture Trebek — or the show — without the mustache. “It’s an iconic show,” said former Obama White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, who competed against

O’Leary and “Hardball” host Chris Matthews in an episode airing Monday. “You watched it some in college. You watched some after dinner or something. It’s something that’s been with us for so long.” In Trebek’s 28 years as host of “Jeopardy!” (weeknights, 7:30 p.m., ABC), D.C. has always been a hotbed for contestants, and the show hasn’t lost its popularity in the region. Hundreds of Washingtonians lined up early at DAR Constitution Hall last month to see Trebek take his act on the road for the show’s teen tournament — which aired the past two weeks — and the Power Players contests, featuring an array of celebrities competing for charity. This isn’t the first time “Jeopardy!” has come to Washington. Another “Power Players Week” was held eight years ago. “We’re like the presidential run, except in reverse,” Trebek said. “When people are elected president, they come to Washington, D.C., and

present sound of emergency vehicles (“Can you go a period without hearing sirens in Washington, D.C.?”). The celebrities competing this week have a distinctive D.C. flavor, with many either covering the news or making headlines, like Gibbs, and his predecessor in the Bush administration, Dana Perino, who competed against NBA legend Kareem AbdulJabar and CNBC anchor David Faber in an episode airing Tuesday. Other local tie-ins include clues about D.C. sites and one about a certain Nationals pitcher. About the only thing missing was Trebek’s mustache. “It’s in a drawer in my dresser in Los Angeles, so I can’t put it on at any time,” joked Trebek, who wore a fake mustache as an April Fool’s joke in 2001, months after his famous shave. “But I don’t think I’ll grow it again. If I do grow it again, it will come out a lot whiter.” It’s a good trick to keep Trebek and “Jeopardy!” from showing their age. MAT T SWENSON (E XPRESS)

JIM MCCRARY

The voice behind the standards “It’s Too Late,” ‘’You’ve Got a Friend” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” says her music-making days are likely over. Carole King, now a best-selling author, doubts she will ever write another song and suggested that her 2010 “Troubadours Reunion” concert tour with James Taylor would be her last: “It was a good way to go out.” King composed dozens of 1960s hits with then-husband Gerry Goffin before emerging as a recording artist in her own right. Her 25 million-selling “Tapestry” launched the singer-songwriter era in 1971 and became the first real blockbuster album. Two new projects offer fresh reminders of her legacy — the memoir “A Natural Woman” and a new disc (“The Legendary Demos”) that gathers demo recordings of some of her best-known songs that were made to sell the compositions to

other artists. It’s intriguing to hear King’s first take on the songs that became known through others, such as “Pleasant Valley Sunday” (the Mon-

kees), “Crying in the Rain” (Everly Brothers), “Take Good Care of My Baby” (Bobby Vee) and “You’ve Got a Friend” (James Taylor). The wiser artists didn’t fiddle with her

“At this point I can look back at my life and career as a songwriter and say I’ve done everything I really wanted to do,” King says. She’s not naive. She knows popular culture has long since moved elsewhere. As a teenage music prodigy she knew what young people were thinking about and wanted to hear, but she’s not there anymore. “To just write songs and to throw them out into the marketplace, I don’t think this is my time to do that,” she says. Now, she’s focusing on writing, and, maybe, retirement. But with her first book fresh on the market, she’s already thinking about the possibility of another one. “Now that I’m 70, I have bits of wisdom I can offer to a younger generation,” she says. “It’s not, ‘This is the way it has to be,’ but ‘This is my experience, I hope this helps you.’”

Jump, Jump! If you are or were a ponyobsessed preteen girl, AFI Silver has decided to become your favorite movie theater with its latest series: “Horses in Cinema.” “National Velvet,” “The Black Stallion” and “Hidalgo” are all on tap, but tonight it’s “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken,” about a horse that does high-dives in a sideshow. No, really. AFI Silver, 8633 Colesville Road, Silver Spring; Mon., 5:10 p.m., $7-$8.50; 301-4953720, Afi.com. (Silver Spring)

BaroqueShoe PopRock At this advanced point in musical history, there are indie bands that no longer require categorization into the subgenres that have obsessed indie rockers for so long. Shoegaze? Krautrock? Baroque pop? Brooklyn’s Here We Go Magic says yes to all of these. In fact, let’s just ditch the qualifiers and say that the band’s music is consistently pretty. Black Cat, 1811 14th St. NW; Mon., 8 p.m., $15; 202-667-7960, Blackcatdc. com. (U Street)

Island Spirits Cinco de Mayo may be over, but Bourbon Steak’s South of the Border cocktail seminar will serve you well when it comes to barbecues, porch-sitting and pontificating about rum. Bourbon Steak, 2800 Pennsylvania Ave. NW; Mon., 6:30 p.m., $45-$50; Museumoftheamericancocktail. org. (Foggy Bottom)

7j >_i 8[ij WdZ Mehij ‘King of Late Night’ views Johnny Carson from every angle :eYkc[djWho “Johnny Carson: King of Late Night,” a heartfelt and at times beautiful and melancholy two-hour “American Masters” documentary, is a fine effort by filmmaker Peter Jones to both exalt and deconstruct the man. He has access to all the great stuff from the vaults, but he’s after something deeper in Carson’s private persona. What we come away with is a portrait of someone who was brilliantly witty and easygoing, so long as the camera was on. When it wasn’t, well . . . people still aren’t quite sure of what to say. F8I

Johnny Carson, shown here in 1967, wasn’t always as he appeared on TV.

He was, by most accounts, socially awkward. He was a straying husband, a sometimes tyrannical boss, an ambivalent friend, a remote father and a mean drunk. We are asked to consider all these things on balance with the soothingly ebullient happiness that “The Tonight Show,” under Carson’s stewardship, brought bedtime viewers for close to 30 years. The joy comes out far ahead, but a bittersweet aftertaste remains. Carson is still a tough nut to crack. Going to the same thematic places where most Carson biographers have already trod, Jones’ film nevertheless shapes a penetrating and refreshingly frank look at the man who mapped out the turf that is still so ardently fought for in the seemingly endless “late-night wars.” HANK STUE VER (THE WASHINGTON POST )

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Prevailing rhythms may be irregular and unsteady today. You have the feeling that a message is being sent to you and you alone. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) What you see and hear going on around you today will have greater import than usual, and you’ll sense that something is fast approaching. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Tackle your duties one at a time and in proper sequence and it won’t seem as though you have too much to do. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may feel as though you are facing something of a mountain at this time, but the emotional weight of a situation can be misleading.

Yesterday’s Solution

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Certain patterns that you see will mean more than usual, especially since they are clearer to you today than they usually are. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You can get much from watching another in a similar situation. It’s all about preparation — and you cannot be too prepared!

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’ll want to follow up on the work done by someone else. You can ensure a positive outcome, even if things seem up in the air. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may be asked to take part in a project that requires you to learn a whole new skill set — but you’re ready to do what you must.
