Wildlife officials have finally captured a large invasive Asian water monitor that had been running loose in the Florida Keys for more than a year. Florida Fish and Wildlife officials posted pictures on Facebook with the caption: “Elusive lizard captured!” The lizard was more than 5 feet long. Once caught, the lizard was removed from the wild. Wildlife officials say this helps prevent the establishment of a new non-native species. (AP)

Grad ‘literally got the chills’ EDUCATION When Rashema Melson first walked across Georgetown University’s campus as a freshman in the fall of 2014, she told herself she was smart enough to be there and deserved to be there.

But she didn’t always believe her own pep talks.

Melson had arrived at Georgetown’s idyllic Northwest D.C. campus from just across town, where she lived in a single room with her mother and two brothers at the homeless shelter located in the former D.C. General Hospital.

The shelter had been Melson’s residence while she attended Anacostia High School, where she earned straight A’s and graduated as valedictorian that spring. Her living conditions — the showers often had no hot water, she wore noise-canceling headphones so she could study — were a universe away from most of her new fellow scholars. “ ‘Is this really where I belong?’ ” Melson remembered thinking.

23-year-old answered that question with a triumphant yes as she strode across the stage at Georgetown’s graduation ceremony. Melson accepted her diploma, a degree in justice and peace studies, and became the first person in her family to graduate from college.

“I literally got the chills as soon as they called my name,” Melson said after the ceremony.

Melson’s graduation is all the more remarkable when you consider the odds against her.

“She’s always embraced where she’s from and the people she grew up with and she feels a responsibility to help them.”

According to census data, only 9 percent of the United States’ poorest young people — those whose family income puts them in the bottom quartile — earn a fouryear college degree by age 24.

The path from her first day at Georgetown five years ago to diploma on Saturday was not the straight line she wished for as a freshman. During her sophomore year, Melson left Georgetown to marry her boyfriend and live with him on a military base in Tennessee. The marriage lasted a year. Melson said she tried to make it work, but she thought she was sacrificing too much. She reapplied to Georgetown and returned determined to earn her degree.

Melson credits her success to her faith in God, her own resilience, and the backing of friends, teachers and supporters.

She says she wants to work in public policy to help assist impoverished and underserved communities. She’s considering job offers from community service organizations. She plans to pursue a law degree in the future.

THE DISTRICT District officials are so desperate for more solutions to the city’s parking and traffic problems that they’re considering recruiting citizens to help enforce the rules of the road.

A proposal before the D.C. Council would allow up to 80 regular citizens, 10 in each ward, to issue tickets to vehicles parked where they aren’t allowed — blocking crosswalks, in bike lanes, in front of bus stops.

They would be the city’s eyes and ears in the neighborhoods, spotting parking violators, documenting the infractions with photos and issuing citations. Think of them as citizen enforcers, said Council member Charles Allen, D-Ward 6, the proposal’s chief sponsor.

It’s a concept that’s been tried in other U.S. cities, where officials say it helps beef up enforcement while allowing law enforcement to focus on more serious crime.

But critics say these “citizen cops” are a recipe for disaster.

Allen hopes the Citizen Safety Enforcement program, though unconventional, could be a resource to reduce troubling road behaviors that put people’s lives at risk. The intent of the pilot program, he said, is to improve road safety — along with two dozen other initiatives included in a comprehensive transportation bill he introduced this month.

The city can’t ignore that traffic fatalities are on the rise, said Allen, citing 36 victims last year and 12 so far this year. About half of the victims are pedestrians or bicyclists.

“We should be acting with a

greater sense of urgency and we should be willing to try new things because what we have been doing hasn’t stopped people from dying,” Allen said.

Several other cities have or are experimenting with the citizen enforcement concept, recruiting — and even paying — their citizens to rat out traffic violators.

New York last year created a reward program for residents to report idling vehicles, providing a platform where they can file complaints along with photos and video evidence of offenders.

A car crash left behind a trail of destruction in D.C. early Saturday, including damage to a memorial honoring a cyclist who died weeks earlier at the same location. At 4:08 a.m., a Chevrolet Tahoe struck a light pole and a parked car near the intersection of 12th and K streets NE and Florida Avenue, according to police spokeswoman Kristen Metzger. The driver of the Tahoe fled the scene, Metzger said.

The memorial — a “ghost bike” painted white — was erected last month in honor of Dave Salovesh, a well-known D.C. cyclist and safety activist who was killed in the intersection by the driver of a stolen minivan on April 19, authorities said.

The sentence issued in federal court in Alexandria for Kevin Mallory, 62, of Leesburg, Va., is less than the life sentence sought by prosecutors but more than the 10-year term requested by the defense. Woman sentenced in fatal restaurant crash A woman who was convicted of manslaughter for plowing into a Prince George’s County restaurant has been sentenced to a year in jail. Vernelle Robinson was sentenced Friday in the 2017 crash that killed Isiah Pugh.

Pugh was at Babe’s Boys Tavern for a meeting of local Boy Scout leaders. The 73-year-old died in the hospital a week after the crash. Prosecutors said Robinson was speeding around a curve and lost control of her car. (AP/TWP)

Four people were charged with trespassing at the Venezuelan Embassy.

Embassy squatters charged in protest THE DISTRICT Four activists who were forcibly removed from the Venezuelan Embassy after living there for more than a month were released from jail Friday after appearing in federal court on a misdemeanor charge of interfering with State Department diplomatic protective functions.

Prosecutors filed the charge, punishable by up to a year in prison, by criminal information, a charging document used when defendants waive their right to an indictment that typically means they intend to enter a plea deal.

Margaret Flowers, 56; Adrienne Pine, 48; David Paul, 69; and Kevin Zeese, 63, were the last of about 50 left-wing demonstrators who, since April 10, had spent time living inside the troubled South American country’s embassy in Georgetown.

The defendants didn’t enter a plea, but Harvey set a court date for June 12, which also is the deadline for them to decide whether to keep court-appointed counsel or seek other attorneys.

A powerful Navajo project

KAIBETO, ARIZ. Miranda Haskie sits amid the glow of candles at her kitchen table while her husband, Jimmie Long Jr., fishes for the wick to light a kerosene lamp as the couple and their 13-year-old son prepare to spend a final night without electricity.

In the morning, utility workers who recently installed four electric poles outside their doublewide house trailer will connect it to the power grid, meaning they will no longer be among the tens of thousands of people without power on the Navajo Nation, the country’s largest American Indian reservation.

Haskie and Long are getting their electricity this month thanks to a project to connect 300 homes with the help of volunteer utility crews from across the U.S. The Navajo Tribal Utility Authority connects from 400 to 450 homes a year, chipping away at the 15,000 scattered, rural homes without power on the 27,000-square-mile reservation that lies in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. At that rate, it would take the tribal utility about 35 more years to get electricity to the 60,000 of the reservation’s 180,000 residents who don’t have it.

The couple’s home at the end of rutted dirt roads outside the small town of Kaibeto was about a quarter-mile from the closest power line.

The family’s weekday routine included showering, cooking and charging cellphones, battery packs and flashlights at Haskie’s mother’s house 2 miles away, down dirt roads that turn treacherous in stormy weather.

Navajos without electricity also pack food or medication in coolers with ice or leave it outside in the wintertime. Children use dome lights in cars or kerosene lamps to do their homework at night. Some tribal members have small solar systems that deliver

Creating the infrastructure to reach the far-flung homes on the reservation is extremely costly.

Hooking up a single home can cost up to $40,000 on the reservation, where the annual per capita income is around $10,700 and half the workforce is unemployed, said Walter Haase, general manager of the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority.

For the recent power hookup project called Light Up Navajo, the utility raised funds from an online campaign, collected donations from employees, businesses and communities, and used revenue from solar farms on the reservation to cover the utility’s $3 million cost. Money that isn’t raised will be borrowed and the repayment passed on to customers via their rates, Haase said. The project started in March and ends this month.

The volunteer crews spent days on the reservation, learning about Navajo culture, the language and the landscape before setting out to job sites often hours away from their hotel rooms.

Ken Wagner was part of a fourman crew from Piqua, Ohio, that weathered rain, dust storms and sandy terrain as they traveled through the western part of the reservation in Arizona earlier this month.

GOP Rep. Amash: Trump obstructed WASHINGTON A Republican congressman from Michigan on Saturday became the first member of President Trump’s party on Capitol Hill to accuse him of engaging in “impeachable conduct” stemming from special counsel Robert Mueller’s lengthy investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

But Rep. Justin Amash stopped short of calling on Congress to begin impeachment proceedings, which many Democrats have been agitating for.

Often a lone GOP voice in Congress, Amash sent a series of tweets Saturday faulting both Trump and Attorney General William Barr over Mueller’s report. Mueller submitted his report to Barr in late March.

Barr then released a summary of Mueller’s “principal conclusions” and released a redacted version of the report in April.

Mueller left open the question of whether Trump acted in ways that were meant to obstruct the investigation. Barr later said there was insufficient evidence to bring obstruction charges.

“Contrary to Barr’s portrayal, Mueller’s report reveals that President Trump engaged in specific actions and a pattern of behavior that meet the threshold for impeachment,” the congressman tweeted. He said the report “identifies multiple examples of conduct satisfying all the elements of obstruction of justice, and undoubtedly any person who is not the president of the United States would be indicted based on such evidence.”

The Justice Department, which Barr leads, operates under guidelines that discourage the indictment of a sitting president.

Trump suggests Ala. abortion law goes too far POLITICS President Trump is carefully distancing himself from a new Alabama law that bans abortion in almost all circumstances, even in cases of rape and incest, stressing his “strongly pro-life” credentials while aligning himself with other Republicans who also contend the statute goes too far.

In a late-night Twitter thread Saturday, Trump avoided any direct references to the law in Alabama or in other Republicanled states that have rushed to enact strict abortion rules.

But he underscored that his position — Trump has said he opposes abortion except in cases of rape, incest or when the life of the mother is at risk — is the same as that of former President Ronald Reagan. He urged Republicans to instead stay united on the issue, which the GOP has used to go on the offensive against Democrats.

Trump is far from the only Republican, although certainly the most powerful one, to signal that the new Alabama law — which also allows a penalty of up to 99 years in prison for doctors who perform the procedure — goes too far. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said last week that the statute goes further than he supports with its lack of exemptions for rape and incest, and very few Republicans on Capitol Hill have been eager to weigh in to support the law. More U.S. citizens are moving to Mexico, and even those there illegally are welcomed

MEXICO Spanish friars brought the faith to San Miguel de Allende, a colonial city in Mexico’s central highlands.

The silver barons of the 18th century built its mansions. Now comes the pickleball invasion.

It started with just a few American retirees. Now there are so many clubs in Mexico dedicated to the U.S. sport that a tournament was held there last year.

“It was a madhouse,” said Victor Guzmán, a 67-year-old entrepreneur from Charlotte, N.C., who helped pull the event together.

President Trump regularly assails the flow of migrants crossing the Mexican border into the United States. Less noticed has been the surge of people heading in the opposite direction.

Mexico’s statistics institute estimated this month that the U.S.born population in this country has reached 799,000 — a roughly fourfold increase since 1990. And the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City estimates the real number is higher — at 1.5 million or more.

They’re a mixed group.

They’re digital natives who can work just as easily from Puerto Vallarta as Palo Alto. They’re U.S.-born kids — nearly 600,000 of them — who’ve returned with their Mexican-born parents. And they’re retirees like Guzmán.

If the thousands of Mexicans moving home are taken into account, the flow of migrants from the U.S. to Mexico is probably larger than the flow of Mexicans to the U.S. The American immigrants are pouring money into local economies, renovating historic homes and changing the dynamics of Mexican classrooms.

“It’s beginning to become a very important cultural phenomenon,” said Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s foreign minister. “Like the Mexican community in the

“Despite the fact that Donald Trump insults my country every day, here we receive the entire international community, beginning with Americans, with open arms and hearts,” Villarreal said.

Mexican authorities say that many of the Americans are probably undocumented — typically, they’ve overstayed their sixmonth visas. But the government has shown little concern.

“We have never pressured them to have their documents in order,” Ebrard said.

Typically, violators pay a small fine. Villarreal shrugged.

“We like people who come to work and help the economy of the city — like Mexicans do in the United States.”

Given the dollar’s strength against the Mexican peso, even an American getting by on Social Security and a modest pension can rent a high-ceilinged apartment, hire a maid and eat out most nights.

“You can live here on $2,000 or $3,000 a month — and live well,” Guzmán said.

Unlike America, Mexico hasn’t traditionally had many immigrants. Less than 1 percent of the population is foreign-born. After a decades-long wave of Mexican migration transformed the U.S., Silvia Giorguli, a demographer and president of the College of Mexico, said it is now Mexico that faces a dilemma: “How do you integrate Americans?” MARY BETH SHERIDAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Bomb hits bus of tourists near Giza Pyramids CAIRO A roadside bomb hit a tourist bus on Sunday near the Giza Pyramids, wounding at least 17 people, including tourists, Egyptian officials said.

The officials said the bus was traveling on a road close to the Grand Egyptian Museum, which is located adjacent to the Giza Pyramids but is not yet open to tourists as it’s still under construction. The bus was carrying at least 25 people mostly from South Africa, officials added.

The attack comes as Egypt’s vital tourism industry is showing signs of recovery after troubles because of the political turmoil and violence that followed a 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Hosni Mubarak.

The officials said security forces cordoned off the site of the explosion and the wounded were taken to a nearby hospital.

The explosion damaged a windshield of another car, they said. Footage circulated online shows shattered windows of the bus. Atif Moftah, general supervisor of the Grand Egyptian Museum, said the explosion did not cause any damage to the museum, in a statement issued by the antiquities ministry.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack — the second to target foreign tourists near the famed pyramids in less than six months.

Chalk one up for normalcy.

Yet a question that better encapsulated the day — better than, “Is this redemption for War of Will, blocked by Maximum Security’s wayward trip in the Derby?” — was: Can a horse without a rider win a

The city of Baltimore is suing the owners of Pimlico Race Course, which is probably the second-most well known suit in the world of horse racing because the owner of the horse that was disqualified as the winner of the Kentucky Derby is fighting — in federal court — to get that decision overturned. On Friday afternoon, a horse collapsed and died after the finish of a race at Pimlico.

That enough to capture the state of a sport and the venue that hosts one of its crown jewels? Well, if you thought you saw a riderless horse sprinting

while they waited in line for the bathrooms.

The Stronach Group, which owns both Pimlico and Santa Anita, is tussling with both the city and the state to move the Preakness from the only home it has ever known.

I covered baseball at RFK Stadium. I know a venue that’s no longer suitable for hosting major events, and Pimlico is no longer suitable for hosting major events.

So there’s the backdrop to this year’s Preakness: a local crisis involving this city’s marquee sporting event that folds into the national crisis that encompasses the entire sport.

Oh, and both Maximum Security and Country House — the two celebrities that thrust the sport to the national discourse — skipped the Preakness.

Horse racing seems a bit chaotic at the moment. Sometimes that’s tragic. On Saturday, it seemed more typical.

This old track has its history.

But in what might be one of the last Preaknesses staged here, 2019 will be the year a horse ran the race without a rider, and that fit in with the current state of the sport.

A riderless sport: Preakness chaos a fitting metaphor

The answer is no. But it doesn’t mean Bodexpress didn’t try.

In the aftermath of Maximum Security straying wide in the final turn of the Kentucky Derby, there was little consensus other than this: Thank whoever you pray to that no one — man or horse — was hurt because it could have been the sport’s most calamitous on-track incident.

In ‘Catch-22,’ Hulu offers a win-win TV REVIEW There were once 16 million Americans who had fought and survived World War II; this year, the number of those veterans who are still alive will dip below 400,000. What remains, besides history books and memorial sites, is an extraordinary culture trove centered on the American experience of the war — novels, songs, movies, musicals, TV shows — and the tender gratitude that grew into an agreed-upon nickname, the Greatest Generation.

What gets lost in all the solemnity is a recognition that the human condition is a complex state of being. World War II is full of stories of doubt, despair and many other things that don’t look like honor or courage.

That’s part of the reason Hulu’s enjoyable and surprisingly poignant six-episode adaptation of Joseph Heller’s novel “Catch-22” is such a refreshing find: It’s nice

to be reminded that, along with heroism, the World War II generation possessed a healthy dose of cynicism, a distrust of power, a heightened sense of mischief, an insatiable horniness and a willingness, at times, to subvert the system to one’s benefit.

All of this was and still is personified in one John Yossarian (Christopher Abbott), a B-25 bombardier in the U.S. Army Air Forces, who gives voice to the outrage of war — that he never sees or knows the people he’s killing in the Italian countryside thousands of feet below him.

Hulu’s version of “Catch-22” — written and created by Luke Davies and David Michôd and shepherded by executive producer George Clooney and others — strips the story down to its essential brilliance and then builds it back up into a sweeping, beautifully filmed, humorous yet tragic tale of a young man forever changed by war.

finds himself in combat.

To make its point about horror and fear, this “Catch-22” takes time to fixate on the beauty of young men and women swimming off the coast, carousing in nearby villas, having the time of their lives. Many of those lives are cut short. As Yossarian desperately tries to reach his mission quota, it keeps being raised by the hard-assed Col. Cathcart (Kyle Chandler, who seems to have a grand time snacking on scenery), dashing his hopes of going home.

As his friends keep dying around him, Yossarian begins to panic, and the lasting themes in “Catch-22” are affirmed: There is very little to celebrate about having gone to war.

Now that the series finale of “Game of Thrones” is in the books, take a behind-thescenes look at the making of the final season in this feature-length documentary from filmmaker Jeanie Finlay.

We can only assume that Lucifer (Tom Ellis) and Eve (Inbar Lavi) are up to no good.

Not to go overboard with religious imagery, but Fox sent the series “Lucifer” to cancellation limbo, only for Netflix to resurrect the show and release Season 4 earlier this month.

In case you aren’t one of the devoted fans who prayed for divine intervention to rescue “Lucifer,” here’s the premise.

The smug and rebellious angel Lucifer was kicked out of heaven and sent to rule hell. In the TV version (based on Neil Gaiman’s comic book), he grew bored with the underworld and made an ironic move to Los Angeles — the “City of Angels.”

Now that the show is on Netflix instead of Fox, it needs to adjust its rhythms a bit. When a scene ends, it seems there will be a commercial break — only the next scene pops up, because Netflix is an ad-free zone.

There’s also about 10 more minutes per episode. But the added time doesn’t drag things down.

There’s more time for jokes and for the season’s rich plot lines, which include the issues raised by an angel/human baby, as well as a looming theological question: “Who’s da New King of Hell?” Could it be … Lucifer?

Tyga was briefly married to Jordan Craig, the mother of Tristan Thompson’s 2-year-old son, Prince, according to TMZ. Court documents reportedly state that Tyga and Craig got married Sept. 6, 2010, before filing for divorce a month later. Matthew McConaughey received his high school diploma Friday, 31 years after graduating.

A spokeswoman for Longview High School in Longview, Texas, told the Longview News-Journal that graduates normally just receive diploma holders during commencement ceremonies and that McConaughey never picked up his actual diploma.
