The quest for a gallery space NATIONAL MALL The Smithsonian’s initiative on documenting Asians in America started humbly enough two decades ago, with a borrowed exhibit in a borrowed museum wing and a tiny staff. There was a National Museum of the American Indian attached to the Smithsonian, and progress was being made toward a museum on the National Mall celebrating African Americans’ history. But Asian Americans remained a largely invisible population in the 1990s, with few people represented in entertainment, politics, sports or business. “We had to really convince our colleagues that this was a field, this was a demographic ... that needed to be recognized and needed to be held with some respect,” says Franklin Odo, director at the time of the Smithsonian’s Asian Pacific American program. On Saturday, the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center launched a $25 million fundraising drive for permanent gallery

If successful, an Asian American gallery could join museums and galleries dedicated to other historically underrepresented groups that have staked out space in a national park that is quintessentially American. 20 countries, with the largest populations from China, India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Korea and Japan. They range from

recent immigrants to descendants of laborers who migrated in the 19th century to build the Transcontinental Railroad and work sugar cane fields in Hawaii. It’s too early to say how large a gallery would be or when it might be secured. Lisa Sasaki, the director of the center, says it is looking at several locations along the mall. Sasaki says $25 million is a fundraising goal for phase one of the project. Congressional approval is not required for a gallery within existing space, unlike the stand-alone 400,000-squarefoot National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened in 2016. Odo, the former director, says the Asian American community has evolved enough as an identity to support a permanent gallery dedicated to their shared experience in America. “I don’t know that we have an Oprah,” Odo said, referring to Oprah Winfrey’s charitable foundation, which donated $21 million for the National Museum of African American History and Culture. But “we have lots of people with immense means, so there’s no question in my mind we can do it.” JANIE HAR (AP)

Your new prescription: Food District’s pilot program is part of a movement focused on eating well

74

Adrienne Dove, left, and her mother, Joanne, shop for produce at Giant. They get $20 weekly produce coupons as part of a healthy eating program.

MICHAEL S. WILLIAMSON PHOTOS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT Adrienne Dove pulled up to the checkout line of the Giant grocery store in Southeast D.C. with a cart filled with cabbage, bananas and bagged string beans. The register rang $20.60. Instead of cash or a card, Dove paid with a Produce Rx voucher from the store pharmacy. The Giant in the most impoverished part of the District is the latest frontier in the “food as medicine” movement. Hospitals and local governments across the country have been writing and filling prescriptions for healthy food in an attempt to address the root causes of diabetes, hypertension and other costly illnesses. The federal farm bill that was passed late last year included more than $4 million in grants for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to distribute to governments that run prescription produce programs, but the money has not yet been distributed. The goal, backed by some research, is to improve health and reduce costs by subsidizing fresh produce such as broccoli and grapefruit in addition to insulin and beta blockers. “What we are hoping to find is there is a return on investment for the health care system: a reduction in ER visits, medication compliance,” said Lauren Shweder Biel, executive director of DC Greens, a nonprofit group

Ciera Price, left, gets some tips on how to read food labels from Giant food store nutritionist Jillian Griffith. The store in Ward 8 offers food counseling.

that is managing the District’s Produce Rx pilot. “That’s the holy grail for systems like this.” Improved diet is also a target. “I was trying to manage my patients’ diabetes and high blood pressure, but when they were

telling me they were eating Top Ramen, doughnuts and bagels because it keeps them full, all I could say was, ‘That’s too bad, here’s some more drugs,’ ” said Rita Nguyen of the San Francisco Department of Public Health,

who now oversees an expanding produce prescription program at six clinics. In the nation’s capital, the Produce Rx program started last month and provides 500 Medicaid patients $20 weekly vouchers for produce at the Giant in Ward 8 through the end of the year. Ward 8 is the poorest, sickest part of the city and has the highest rates of death from diabetes and heart disease. It’s also a food desert, and the Giant is the only full-service grocery store. The Produce Rx program, which includes the costs of vouchers and evaluating patient outcomes, has received $500,000 from the D.C. government and about $150,000 from AmeriHealth Caritas, a Medicaid-managed care organization. AmeriHealth Caritas patients are the only ones now eligible for the Produce Rx pilot. Dove, 43, found out about the program while at a Community of Hope health clinic for a check on the state of her hypertension and anemia. Medical professionals often urge Dove to eat better, but she was surprised when a clinic official called the Giant pharmacy to secure produce vouchers for her the same way doctors would call in a prescription for drugs. “I was just mainly eating fried chicken wings and french fries. I grew up on McDonald’s and I got high blood pressure,” said Dove, who lives with her mother and two children. “Now I tell my son, ‘Don’t be like Mommy,’ and he asks for broccoli and spinach.” FENIT NIRAPPIL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

DEADLIER SHOOTINGS IN D.C.

The number of people killed in shootings in D.C. last year who were struck multiple times, according to the Chief Medical Examiner. That’s up from 57 in 2017. Officials trying to understand D.C.’s rising homicide count have attributed that trend in part to shootings becoming more lethal. “Instead of single gunshots to the legs, we are seeing gunshot wounds going through the chest and abdomen, and causing multiple injuries,” said Mallory Williams, the chief of trauma and critical care at Howard University Hospital. Homicides in D.C. surged in 2018 to 160, 38% more than in 2017. (TWP)

Trial begins in challenge to 4 abortion laws in Va. VIRGINIA A trial began Monday in Richmond in a federal lawsuit seeking to overturn four abortionrestriction measures in Virginia. The laws being challenged include a physician-only measure that bars nurse practitioners and physician’s assistants from performing abortions. debate intensifies nationwide. Several states have passed tough new anti-abortion laws, including Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Ohio and Kentucky. Lawyers for the women’s health groups suing Virginia skipped their opening statement

and began their case by calling Dr. Mark Nichols, who worked for years as the medical director of a Planned Parenthood chapter in Oregon. “It is one of the safest medical procedures that exist,” Nichols testified of abortion. Nichols said he believes the laws being challenged in Virginia are not medically necessary. He said the vast majority of abortions are simple procedures that can be done in an office setting. “There’s no medical reason to add these layers of regulation,” he said. The trial is expected to last about two weeks. U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson will decide the case, not a jury. DENISE LAVOIE (AP)

WASHINGTONPOST.COM TRANSPORTATION

Is a monorail the solution to traffic on I-270? Montgomery County developer Robert Eisinger says he has found a fast, reliable and cost-effective way to ease traffic on Interstate 270: Get tens of thousands of motorists traveling from the outer suburbs to switch to a monorail between Frederick and the Shady Grove Metro station. Eisinger said he knows the word monorail conjures images of amusement park rides more suitable for ferrying passengers around Disney World than carrying commuters through the suburbs of the nation’s capital. But he said a consultant’s study, paid for by him and private contributors, found that a 27-mile monorail would be environmentally friendly and cost $3.4 billion — significantly less per mile than building a light-rail line or extending Metro’s Red Line. Most importantly, he said, a monorail would fit within the I-270 right of way, leaving homes and backyards untouched and sparing the state the potentially hefty expense of acquiring private property. He envisions trains zooming above highway traffic, making the trip between Frederick and Shady Grove in 31 minutes via six stations and someday extending south to Bethesda and across the Potomac River into Northern Virginia. He does not have a plan for how to pay for the project, but said that it probably would entail a public-private partnership. KATHERINE SHAVER

As market shifts, Ford cuts 7K white-collar jobs

App offers furry facial recognition

DETROIT Ford revealed details of its longawaited restructuring plan Monday as it prepares for a future of electric and autonomous vehicles by parting ways with 7,000 white-collar workers worldwide, about 10% of its global salaried workforce. The major revamp, which had been underway since last year, will save about $600 million per year by eliminating bureaucracy and increasing the number of workers reporting to each manager. In the U.S., about 2,300 jobs will be cut through buyouts and layoffs. About 1,500 have left voluntarily or with buyouts, while another 300 have already been laid off. About 500 workers will be let go starting this week, largely in and around the company’s headquarters in Dearborn, Mich., just outside Detroit. The layoffs are coming across a broad swath of the company, but Ford also said it is hiring in some critical areas, including those developing software and dealing with self-driving and electric vehicles. In a memo to employees on Monday, CEO Jim Hackett said the majority of U.S. cuts will be finished by Friday. “To succeed in our competitive industry, and

Company pares back to invest in electric and autonomous vehicles

CEO Jim Hackett on Monday announced details of Ford’s restructuring.

GM’s cuts drew fire General Motors’ cuts in November brought withering criticism from President Trump and Congress, especially the closing of a small-car factory in Lordstown, Ohio. Trump campaigned on bringing factory jobs back to the industrial Midwest. GM has since announced a possible deal to sell the Lordstown plant to a startup electric vehicle maker, but it hasn’t been finalized. (AP)

position Ford to win in a fastcharging future, we must reduce bureaucracy, empower managers, speed decision making and focus on the most valuable work, and cut costs,” Hackett wrote. It’s the second set of layoffs

for Detroit-area automakers, even though the companies are making healthy profits. In November, General Motors announced it would shed up to 14,000 workers as it cut expenses to prepare for a shift to electric and autonomous vehicles. The layoffs included the closure of five factories in the U.S. and Canada and cuts of another 8,000 white-collar workers worldwide. About 6,000 blue-collar positions were cut, but most of the laid-off factory workers in the U.S. will be placed at other plants. Both companies have said the cuts are needed because they face huge capital expenditures to update their current vehicles and develop them for the future.

Can’t tell Bei Bei apart from Bao Bao? Fear not. Chinese tech whizzes, who have perfected facial recognition technology for humans, have now come up with an app that can tell one white-faced, black-eyed bear from another. Visitors to the panda breeding center in the Sichuan capital of Chengdu, one of China’s top tourist attractions, will be able to scan a panda’s face with the mobile app to get information about that particular bear. It’s not just a gimmick for tourists, though. Researchers say the technology will help them analyze data on pandas both in captivity and the wild. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Trans woman beaten in video is found dead DALLAS A 23-year-old transgender woman whose beating in front of a crowd was captured on video has been found dead on a Dallas street, police said. Muhlaysia Booker was found face-down early Saturday after officers were called following reports of shots being fired. She was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. Booker died from “homicidal violence,” said police Maj. Vincent Weddington. He did not elaborate. No suspect has been identified. Weddington said there’s no evidence indicating a link between the shooting and the April 12 beating Booker suffered after she was involved in a minor traffic accident. A police affidavit released at the time said Booker accidentally backed into a vehicle before the driver of that vehicle pointed a gun at her and refused to let her leave unless she paid for the damage. As a crowd gathered, someone offered $200 to a man to beat the woman, who suffered a concussion, fractured wrist and other injuries, police said. Other men also struck Booker, with one stomping on her head. Edward Thomas, 29, was arrested and jailed on a charge of aggravated assault. A cellphone recording showed her being beaten as the crowd hollered and watched. Video of the attack was shared on social media. The investigation into the April attack continues. (AP)

nation+world White House shields former counsel from congressional inquiry WASHINGTON The White House on Monday blocked former counsel Donald McGahn from testifying to Congress, the latest act of defiance in the ongoing war between House Democrats and President Trump. McGahn, who Democrats hoped would become a star witness in their investigation into whether Trump obstructed justice, was subpoenaed to testify this morning. The former White House counsel was a key witness in several instances of potential obstruction detailed in special counsel Robert Mueller’s report.

In a summary from the Office of Legal Counsel, the Justice Department argued that the immunity of the president’s immediate advisers from compelled congressional testimony is long-standing and is based on the “fundamental working of the separation of powers.” The department said McGahn is “not legally required to appear and testify” about matters related to his past role as counsel to Trump. The move to bar McGahn from answering lawmakers’ questions is certain to anger House Democrats already eager to hit back at what they view as White House stonewalling. The defiance raises the possibility that the House will hold McGahn in contempt

of Congress, as House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., has threatened. An increasing number of

frustrated Democrats also want to begin impeachment proceedings against Trump even though House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., last week privately downplayed the possibility and encouraged her members to focus on their policy agenda. Some Democrats believe opening an impeachment inquiry would strengthen their hand in trying to force the White House to comply with document requests and witness testimony. House Democrats were hoping to make McGahn their key witness as they seek to unpack the findings of the Mueller report — particularly regarding questions of whether Trump obstructed justice. KIEV, UKRAINE Ukraine’s new president, a comedian before he turned to statecraft, made a dramatic entrance to the political stage Monday by disbanding parliament minutes after his inauguration. Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who won 73% of the vote last month, justified his contentious decision on the grounds that the legislature, controlled by allies of the man he defeated, is riddled with self-enrichment. Elections to the Supreme Rada had been scheduled for Oct. 27, which raised the prospect of Zelenskiy struggling to enact his agenda in the face of a hostile parliament. A snap parliamentary election will be held within two months. Zelenskiy, a comedian who long played the role of a Ukrainian president on a popular TV show, is gambling that his popularity will see the next parliament dominated by supporters of his agenda to reform Ukraine and steer a new path with Russia. Volodymyr Fesenko, head of the Kiev-based think tank Penta, said Zelenskiy’s announcement shows “political will for radical change.” “The legally dubious decision to disband parliament will certainly be contested in court, but Zelenskiy has shown that it is going to be him who will lay down the agenda and that he will dominate the political landscape,” Fesenko said. South Korea pledges quick help as neighbor suffers historic drought SEOUL South Korea vowed Monday to move quickly on plans to provide $8 million worth of medical and nutritional aid for North Korean children through U.N. agencies while it also considers sending broader food aid to the country, which says it is suffering its

worst drought in decades. Lee Sang-min, spokesman for Seoul’s Unification Ministry, said the government will discuss its plans with the World Food Program (WFP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund, through which the aid would be provided, to ensure that it reaches North Korean children and pregnant women quickly. South Korea is also trying to build public and political support for providing wider food aid to

reported food shortages. U.N. food agencies said earlier this month that about 10 million people were facing “severe food shortages” after one of North Korea’s worst harvests in a decade.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has expressed hopes that aid will help revive diplomacy and engagement with North Korea, which tapered off after a nuclear summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Trump in February broke down because of differences over sanctions relief and disarmament steps. While the United States has urged allies to maintain economic pressure on North Korea until it takes material steps toward relinquishing its nuclear weapons, White House spokesman Sarah Sanders recently said Washington has no plan to “intervene” if South Korea moves forward with food aid. week in testimony before a panel of the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee. Since President Trump took office, his administration has scaled back numerous environmental rules enacted under former President Barack Obama and declined to impose federal limits on some contaminants and pesticides. The Trump administration also has reversed course on climate change, refusing to embrace the limits on greenhouse gas emissions that the federal government previously had pledged to adopt under an international agreement. “Overall, we try to defer to the states as much as possible,” EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said — though he added that the administration would oppose state action that would “interfere with national commerce” or “create uncertainties for consumers or for businesses.” One of the most pressing splits is unfolding in the auto industry,

A push to regulate PFAS At least a half-dozen states have pushed forward with their own plans to limit a class of compounds known as PFAS, saying ample evidence exists to regulate them. The labmade compounds have long been used in products such as nonstick pans. Long-term exposure has been associated with an array of health problems, including certain cancers, though researchers continue to study the health implications. The EPA released a long-term PFAS “action plan” earlier this year, but Administrator Andrew Wheeler said the agency must undertake a “rigorous” review before settling on national standards that are legally and scientifically defensible. Google cuts off Huawei amid U.S.-China clash TECHNOLOGY Google is restricting future business with Huawei, cutting off access to its Android operating system and its popular apps, after the Trump administration escalated a crackdown on the Chinese tech firm. Google’s suspension is a major blow to the world’s largest telecommunications equipmentmaker, which will no longer receive access and support for Google’s proprietary apps such as Gmail, YouTube and Chrome. The open-source version of Android will still be available to Huawei, according to the report, but the Chinese tech giant will immediately lose access to updates to the operating system. And though existing Huawei users can still download popular Google apps through the Google Play store, they won’t be available on future Huawei handsets. People who already own Huawei phones will not see a sudden disappearance of their services. Google’s move is the latest setback for Huawei. Last week, the U.S. government added Huawei to its “Entity List,” forcing the company to obtain a U.S. government license to buy U.S. technology. Known to some as the “death penalty,” the designation makes it virtually impossible for firms to survive once U.S. businesses cut off their dealings. The penalty was seen as an escalation of the economic clash between the Trump administration and China.

ENVIRONMENT More than a dozen states are moving to strengthen environmental protections to combat a range of issues from climate change to water pollution, opening a widening rift between stringent state policies and the Trump administration’s deregulatory agenda. In recent months, Hawaii, New York and California have moved to ban a widely used agricultural pesticide linked to neurological problems in children, even as the administration has resisted such restrictions. Michigan and New Jersey are pushing to restrict a ubiquitous class of chemical compounds that have turned up in drinking water, saying they can no longer wait for the Environmental Protection Agency to take action. And Colorado and New Mexico have adopted new policies targeting greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel drilling and limiting where these operations can take place. The growing patchwork of regulations is creating uncertainty for American businesses as state lawmakers vie to change rules that, in past administrations, were more likely to be set at the federal level. Local officials say the jumble of policies threatens to create disparities, not only in obligations placed on businesses but also in the level of protections guarding human health in different communities. “It is difficult to communicate to your customers that New Jersey or Minnesota or Vermont has evaluated the risk to their residents differently, and that one state places a lower value on protection of public health than another,” Brian Steglitz, the water treatment manager for Ann Arbor, Mich., said last

freezing federal mileage requirements between model years 2020 and 2026, rather than boosting them to require that vehicles get more than 50 miles per gallon, as was required under Obama administration rules. California has pledged to press ahead with the tighter standards regardless of what the White House decides. D.C. and 13 states are poised to adopt California’s standards if they diverge from the federal government’s. Automakers, which pressed Trump to revisit the mileage targets as soon as he took office, are pressing the two sides to reach a compromise rather than fracture the car market. Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers spokeswoman Gloria Bergquist said: “This is all new territory, so no one really knows how it will unfold, but it will be a headache for everyone involved, including consumers.”

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz pulled the plug Monday on his coalition government with the far-right Freedom Party after its leader was shown on video appearing to offer favors to a purported Russian investor. Kurz said he was seeking the removal of Interior Minister Herbert Kickl to ensure an unbiased probe into the video. The Freedom Party reacted by withdrawing its ministers from the government. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai says he backs T-Mobile’s $26.5 billion takeover of rival wireless carrier Sprint, a crucial step for the deal’s approval. Pai said Monday he supported the deal because the two companies promised to expand mobile internet access in rural areas and roll out 5G, the next generation of mobile networks. While Pai’s backing is important, further steps remain. The full commission of three Republicans and two Democrats must still vote, and the Justice Department must also clear the deal. State attorneys general may also move against the merger. (AP)

Redskins hope the state-of-the-art facility will keep players healthier, more focused REDSKINS Massage tables, zero gravity chairs, a laser-therapy table that looks like a tanning bed, a cryotherapy chamber and giant float pods make up the Redskins’ stateof-the-art rest and recovery room. And that’s just at work. At home is a custom-made mattress designed to get just the right amount of sleep. It’s all part of Washington’s pursuit of better injury prevention and recovery. “It’s more like restoration,” head athletic trainer Larry Hess said. “There’s things in here that are setting their body up to perform better in the weight room, to perform better in their meetings mentally.” Sports teams are always looking for the next edge, and the Redskins hope they’re on the right track by zeroing in on rest and relaxation to keep players healthier and more focused. The idea came from a visit by Hess and owner Dan Snyder to English

Premier League soccer clubs to learn about their innovations. Hess and player recovery director Hutch Call partnered early last season with Bedgear, which provides Redskins players with mattresses, pillows, sheets and blankets optimized for their needs. Call said the right amount of sleep could be the difference between a receiver catching a ball and bringing it down and getting it knocked out of his hands. “Our bodies go through a restoration process while we sleep, doing important things like balancing hormones related to tissue growth, stress control, appetite and weight management,” said MIT research scientist and Bedgear sleep scientist and biometrics expert Lorenzo Turicchia. “When a person does not get the right amount of sleep, their bodies will not be able to adequately repair damaged tissues, thus prolonging the healing time.”

Redskins players have required plenty of healing. The team led the league with 27 players on injured reserve last season and put 19 players on IR in 2017. Despite the lengthy injured list, Hess said the team reduced softtissue injuries — sprains, strains, tendinitis and damage to muscles, tendons and ligaments — by over 50 percent last season. He hopes that progress will continue now that players have a full offseason to use the recovery room at the practice facility in Ashburn. After a typical Sunday game, massage therapists and a chiropractor are available Monday and

then again Friday. The recovery room is always open and sometimes is the location of meetings. Coach Jay Gruden said players choose how much of the recovery techniques they want to get involved with. He has tried the recovery room devices himself, thinks they’re pretty cool, and believes they’ll make a difference on the injury front. “Give these guys just another way to help them recover,” Gruden said. “The players, even if it gives them a mental state of mind where, ‘Hey, I feel pretty good,’ then let’s give them every avenue to feel that way.” STEPHEN WHYNO (AP)

NFL to test marijuana for pain management

The NFL and the NFL Players Association have agreed to cooperate in studying the use of marijuana as a pain-management tool. Colts add Chad Kelly, plagued by off-the-field problems, as fourth quarterback on roster

The Redskins fear they will lose linebacker Reuben Foster for the 2019 season with a torn left ACL suffered Monday during his first drill in the team’s first offseason workout. Foster, who was carted off the field, is scheduled to see a specialist to be certain the diagnosis is correct, but doctors were sure he had suffered a severe knee injury, according to a person with knowledge of the situation who wasn’t authorized to comment publicly. Foster’s absence would be a significant blow to the Redskins’ defense. “It’s very concerning, for sure,” coach Jay Gruden said. “We will have to wait and see before I get too emotional about it.” The Redskins’ acquisition of Foster last fall was heavily scrutinized, given his two domestic violence arrests last year. WIZARDS Tim Connelly will not take over as the Wizards’ president of basketball operations, as many league insiders had expected. He will instead remain with the Nuggets, according to a person with knowledge of his thinking. Connelly, president of the Nuggets’ basketball operations, met with Wizards majority owner Ted Leonsis in Washington. The Wizards made an offer Sunday. He turned it down. Connelly, who has personal

ties to the D.C. region, has many reasons to stay in Denver: a team with one of the NBA’s youngest rosters and the second-best record in the Western Conference, an all-star in Nikola Jokic and a strong relationship with team president Josh Kroenke. Washington’s situation is not as stable. The next president of basketball operations will have a challenge in attempting to rebuild with impossible-to-move salaries already on the books. The team has only six players signed for the 2019-20 season, including John Wall, who is expected to miss most of next year while rehabilitating his left Achilles tendon. Washington also has

He moved to the Nuggets in 2013. Under Connelly, the Nuggets have begun to contend in the stacked Western Conference. Denver finished this regular season with a 54-28 record and fell one win short of the conference finals. Top women’s players form union, seek single league

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered a review of the state medical board’s handling of complaints against a now-deceased Ohio State team doctor who investigators say sexually abused at least 177 students decades ago. The governor said Monday that “we should all be disgusted by what Richard Strauss did. A report released Friday found Strauss engaged in a pattern of sexual abuse of male students. It said university officials knew and did little to stop it. On Monday, DeWine ordered a working group to review an unredacted version of the report to see what the medical board knew and when. (AP)

The U.S. Soccer Federation and D.C. United are in talks to arrange a U.S. women’s national team friendly at Audi Field in November, multiple people familiar with the discussions said Monday. Neither the USSF nor D.C. United, which owns Audi Field, wanted to comment. The top-ranked Americans last played in Washington in March 2017, a 3-0 loss to France in the SheBelieves Cup at RFK Stadium. (AP)

HEALTH TRENDS

Skip sugar substitutes, Canada says

The best fuel for your workout Two experts offer their tips on what you should eat before and after exercise NUTRITION Timing food consumption with exercise is important to consider — whether you are striving for peak performance, efficient tissue repair or just better overall health. But each body is different, and staying in tune with your own signals is one of the healthiest things you can do. Experts generally advise eating protein, carbohydrates and a little fat at least 90 minutes before a workout, but some people prefer to work out before they eat breakfast in the morning. “Food is just energy, so when you decide what to eat before a workout you want something that gives your body the most usable energy,” strength trainer J Braun says. Usable is the key word — many foods that provide caloric energy to the body deplete energy during digestion. Dairy is one example: Many people struggle to digest the casein protein in dairy and find themselves sleepy or bloated after eating it. That’s not ideal before a workout. Sports nutritionist Barbara

Lewin suggests limiting fiber and fat before exercising because they “take longer to digest, and a full stomach can inhibit a workout. Also, if the pre-workout food is not digested, the energy from that food is not getting to the muscles.” The ideal time to eat is one or two hours before a workout, so the body has time to digest the food and use the nutrients, Lewin says. Braun says his “favorite preworkout snack is an apple with nut butter because it provides natural glucose, protein and healthy fats. The old advice to eat a bagel, pasta or bowls of cereal before a workout is flawed. It is better to eat regular meals with the right balance of protein, healthy fats and natural carbohydrates and then add in digestible pre- or post-workout snacks such as that apple, a cup of soup or a smoothie, if needed.” As for a post-workout snack, Lewin says it may only be beneficial if you’ve worked out for more than an hour. She suggests

GETTY IMAGES/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION

The nutrients you need Carbohydrates make energy in the body faster than any other foods and are the primary place the body goes to find energy. Eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains such as brown rice, oatmeal and quinoa. Protein, a longer-range source of energy, helps build and repair muscle and tissue, and it regulates muscle contraction and water in the body. Don’t fall for the myth that you need to eat tons of protein to build muscle; stick to no more than 15 percent of total calories. Get it from eggs, lean meats, fish, beans, nuts and seeds. Fats are also a secondary source of energy. Nuts and seeds, fish, meat and olive oil provide energy and build the brain, supporting quick thinking on the sports field or during a fast-paced workout class. Water supports all bodily functions. Studies show that athletic performance can be affected by what, how much and when an athlete drinks. Braun recommends sips throughout the day and during a workout rather than gulps afterward. Stopping to take a few sips every now and then also gives you time to catch your breath. C.S.

Mint hosts Vino & Vinyasa at City Winery, 11 a.m. Saturday; $15, includes glass of wine

a fruit and protein-fortified nut milk smoothie with a 4-to-1 carbohydrate-to-protein ratio, to be consumed 20 to 30 minutes after big workouts for optimal glycogen replacement. She likes liquid recovery snacks like smoothies because they also rehydrate. Braun’s version involves whey protein, nut butter, almond milk, MCT oil and cold brew. Both he and Lewin are fans of a little caffeine before a workout for people whose bodies tolerate it. Neither Lewin nor Braun believes the idea that chocolate milk is the ideal recovery snack. Although it offers the right muscle recovery ratio of protein to carbohydrates, drinking chocolate milk with its difficult-to-digest casein and high sugar has its own side effects. “Eating the right amount of protein for your body throughout the day is the best way to give your muscles the nutrients to repair and grow,” Braun says. Lewin adds that “although some science is universal, people are so unique.” If you eat because you think you’re supposed to eat rather than because you feel hungry, you lose the authentic connection to your body. CASEY

Health Canada, the country’s governmental agency for public health, is charting a new course when it comes to dietary advice, particularly in the area of sugar substitutes. In a significant departure from the past as well as from the U.S. approach, Canada’s new food and dietary guidelines say low-calorie sugar substitutes are neither necessary nor helpful. Because “there are no well-established health benefits associated with the intake of sweeteners,” the guidelines say, “nutritious foods and beverages that are unsweetened should be promoted instead.” The new Canadian approach seems to be that if a food or beverage doesn’t have a demonstrated health benefit, it doesn’t belong in your diet. Q. My co-worker is always asking about my boyfriend, what he’s up to, when he’s coming next to have lunch with me, what he thought of the latest episode of a show he likes. We have lunch every once in a while but we don’t get closer as friends. It’s not like I feel she’s going to steal him away, but it is getting old and I am almost embarrassed for her. But it’s not easy to bring up. So, what about not bringing it up — but also not giving any positive reinforcement to her mentions of him? Her: “So, how did Ted like ‘Game of Thrones’?” You: “That episode was something, huh? I really liked it. What did you think of it?” Her: “So, what has Ted been up to?” You: “He hasn’t seen me this week because I’m taking a new yoga class. Did I tell you about it?” Maybe it’s a

conversational crutch, where she thinks he’s the safest or most interesting topic, or she just has a lot in common with him. Maybe she has a huge crush on him and can’t hide it. Or maybe it’s a passive-aggressive jab that conveys that she thinks your boyfriend is more interesting than you are. If she doesn’t get the hint, though, you’d be forgiven for putting the brakes on the lunches.

There’s no magic elixir to give her to make her stand up for her own needs. And that pains me, because feeling like she lacks the right to make decisions about her well-being can only tighten the chokehold of her anxiety. But you can keep planting seeds, to see if something sprouts in time. One seed is the ways therapy could help her, and what her anxiety costs her in life. Another is how you can help — researching therapists, contacting them and even running interference with your dad if need be. Of course, the ultimate seed would be to help her see just how concerning it is that decisions about her health are left up to her steamrolling spouse, a guy who’s not exactly well-versed in the medical field. Because that does not bode well for the growing-oldtogether process, sadly. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. Ruling with an unsteady hand TV REVIEW Less a finale and more like a clearance sale in which another 10 percent is taken off the already reduced stock of expectations, HBO’s “Game of Thrones sailed (and trotted) off to a noble and perhaps anticlimactic end Sunday. It was everything nobody wanted, but it was still quite a thing: adequately just, narratively symmetrical and sufficiently poignant. It went long on swelling imagery and somewhat short on dialogue. It was a final showdown that was instead a big sigh. Like most of this eighth and

bravely but blindly past the material laid out in George R.R. Martin’s novels, the last six episodes mostly acknowledged that “Game of Thrones might never

be perfectly wrapped up — unless by the books’ author himself. It’s likely you’re already aware of the dissatisfaction with the conclusion tweeted hither and yon — six weeks of nitpicking complaints, first-class nerd whining and an ungodly amount of postgame analysis. In some ways, “Game of Thrones had grown so popular that it made its viewers look embarrassingly out of touch with life itself. This can only happen when we love our popular culture a little too hard, crossing some line of personal investment, forgetting when a TV show is only just that. It was our fault for coming to regard the show as the apogee of the medium itself.

‘Riots I Have Known’ smartly undermines academic pomposity BOOK REVIEW There are few survivors in Ryan Chapman’s comic novella. “Riots I Have Known,” which hits shelves today, is a compact cluster bomb of satire that kills widely and indiscriminately. Even the narrator is counting down the minutes to his impending death. But until then, there’s no shutting this guy up. Nicknamed “MF,” he’s an inmate serving nine consecutive life sentences in New York’s Westbrook state prison, which is currently going up in flames — and trending on Twitter. Barricaded in the prison’s new media center, he’s determined to provide “an official accounting of events, as they happened” — at least until the fire or some unloosed psychopath snuffs him out. The central joke of “Riots I Have Known” is that MF is the famous editor of The Holding Pen, a groundbreaking journal of “penal lit” or, worse, “postpenal lit.” The story is presented as a live-blog, a ricocheting monologue of self-justification, cultural criticism and last-minute revenge spinning out on social

media while helicopters hover overhead. If you get it, there’s something rewarding about Chapman’s manic humor. His satire of academic pomposity, the commercialization of the prison system and the infectious influence of marketing zaps with the power of a highly charged stun gun. If that parody of intellectual posturing sounds like a punishment, then bail on “Riots I Have Known.” But if you’re part of the Venn diagram that subscribes to n+1 and McSweeney’s, this is the funniest book you’ll read all year. “I’d like to thank James Charles, Tati and Jeffree Star for ALL wasting my time.” @KOSMICGRANDE, tweeting about the end to the drama between n YouTubers Jeffree Star, top left, Tati Westbrook, top right, and James es Charles, bottom. On Monday, Star posted a video in which he apologized ed to Charles for threatening to expose him, calling him a “danger to society”” and bullying his brother on Twitter. Star said he was “embarrassed” by his actions cttions and was putting the matter to rest for his mental health. Westbrook also so apologized and deleted her “Bye Sister…” video from earlier this month, in which she called out Charles for his allegedly manipulative behavior.

“Swimwear ... but make it without the SWIM.” @ITSPOPPYDUH, criticizing online

retailer PrettyLittleThing for having bikinis that are only for “poolside posing.” Twitter user @Princrastinate discovered the flaw after showering in a two-piece suit by the brand, only to have the dye run everywhere. She contacted PLT and the company said some swimsuits weren’t meant for the water. The admission confused customers and many said they would return bikinis from the brand.

@SAVANNA39803740, joking about the final “Game of Thrones” blunder, a water bottle spotted by the feet of Samwell Tarly during the series finale. The water bottle’s appearance follows a similar cameo by a disposable coffee cup two weeks ago. HBO has yet to comment on the water bottle.
