Obama Reaffirms Mideast Policy President: Returning Israel to ’67 borders is in line with U.S. aims

The final episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” airs Wednesday, as Winfrey ends her popular talk show after a 25-year run. The media icon is turning her attention to her cable channel.

EXWcW Jekhi ;khef[ President Obama begins his weeklong European trip on foreign policy issues, including the Mideast unrest, on Monday in Ireland. He will also visit England, France and Poland.

D[jWdoW^k If[Wai Kf Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington continues Tuesday with a scheduled address to Congress. He met with President Obama on Friday at the White House.

President Obama continued on Sunday to urge Israelis and Palestinians to restart peace talks, but said negotiators would face tough obstacles:

MWi^_d]jed President Obama defended his endorsement of Israel’s 1967 boundaries as the basis for a future Palestine, telling America’s pro-Israel lobby Sunday that his views reflected longstanding U.S. policy that needed to be stated clearly. He said the Jewish state will face growing isolation without “a credible peace process,” while affirming “ironclad” U.S. support for Israel. Obama tried to alleviate concerns that his administration was veering in a pro-Palestinian direction, placing his Mideast policy speech Thursday in the context of Israel’s security. He told the American Israel Public Affairs Committee that those border lines must be subject to negotiated land swaps and said these principles reflected U.S. thinking dating to President Bill Clinton. “What I did on Thursday was to say publicly what has long been acknowledged privately,” Obama said. “I have done so because we cannot afford to wait another decade, or another two decades, or another three decades, to achieve peace.” Obama didn’t retreat from his Thursday remarks on what it would

Borders: The 1967 borders would be a challenge for Israel to defend if a future Palestine were to turn hostile. Jerusalem: The walled Old City has some of the holiest sites for Jews, Muslims and Christians. Neither Israel nor Palestine could easily give it up. Refugees: The Palestinians demand a “right of return” for Palestinian refugees, but Israel balks out of a desire to ensure a Jewish majority. (AP) J. SCOTT APPLEWHITE/AP

President Obama outlines Mideast policy in a speech on Sunday to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, emphasizing the importance of Israeli-Palestinian peace.

7 Ceh[ IkXZk[Z ?ihW[b Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday in a statement after President Obama’s remarks that he supported Obama’s desire to advance peace and resolved to work with him to find ways to renew the talks. His tone was far more reserved than last week, when he issued an impassioned rejection of the 1967 borders as “indefensible” and appeared to publicly admonish Obama after a White House meeting Friday. take to reach a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians. He again said the result must come through negotiation, and that Israeli border security and protections from acts of terrorism must be ensured. “Israelis and Palestinians will negotiate a border that is different than the one that existed on June 4, 1967,” Obama said. That was before Israel seized the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, and a half-million Israelis settled on warwon lands. Palestinians have expressed willingness to let Israel annex some of the settlements closest to the demarcation, as long as they receive comparable land. (AP/ THE WASHINGTON POST )

DWj_ed Explore the challenges two teams faced during their historic race to the South Pole.

GOP List Jostled Anew As Daniels declines a ’12 run, Pawlenty is poised to jump in

J^[ =EF (&'( M_i^ B_ij Influential GOP donors have tried to court several Republican darlings to seek the party’s 2012 nod and challenge President Obama.

MWi^_d]jed

JEB BUSH: The former governor of Florida comes from a presidential family, being the son and brother of former presidents. However, he insists he has no intentions of joining the race for the party’s nomination.

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels joined the march of would-be GOP presidential hopefuls offstage Sunday in a dead-of-night decision that put his supporters in play and muddled the fight for front-runner status against President Obama. “If I have disappointed you, I will always be sorry,” Daniels said in an email, disclosing that he would not run, because his family had vetoed the idea. His exit clears the upcoming news cycle to absorb on Monday the entrance of Tim Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor with a record of resisting tax increases and spending increases. But Pawlenty would have a rival for the claim of No. 1 fiscal conservative in Jon Huntsman, the former Utah governor and Obama’s first ambassador to China. Both are competing to emerge as the main challenger to ex-Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. As Daniels talked about a candidacy, he always pointed to his family as the main issue that would hold

scott

CHRIS CHRISTIE: The New Jersey governor has culled favor with his party by exhibiting his budget-slashing savvy. Still, Christie continues to maintain that he is not seeking the 2012 nomination. MITCH DANIELS: President George W. Bush’s former budget chief earned the nickname “the Blade” for his pursuit of budget cuts. But the Indiana governor on Sunday said he is declining to pursue a White House run. (AP)

C[Wdm^_b[ $$$ These days, the race for the GOP nomination seems more about who isn’t running than who is. Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels joins an increasingly long line of Republicans who have bowed out, including former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee; Donald Trump; Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour; Sen. John Thune of South Dakota; and Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana. (AP)

him back. His wife, Cheri, filed for divorce in 1993 and moved to California to remarry, leaving him to raise their four daughters in Indiana. She later divorced, and she and Daniels remarried in 1997. Daniels’ departure may make room for other contenders as establishment Republicans search for a fiscal conservative with the stature to challenge Obama. One name tossed about is Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the House Budget Committee chairman. Ryan insists he is not seeking to nomination. (AP)

Security forces broke up the crowd after several hours of letting them besiege the embassy. But President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s balking at the U.S.-backed deal threatened to wreck hopes for a peaceful resolution to the chaos that has consumed this key Arab nation, where hundreds of thousands have protested for three months, defying

President Ali Abdullah Saleh refused twice before to sign the agreement. But this weekend it had appeared he was finally relenting under intense pressure from his allies, the U.S. and Gulf Arab countries. Instead, he showed his determination to cling to the power he has held for 32 years. (AP)

a bloody crackdown, to demand his ouster. If the mediation collapses, many fear further deterioration of the political situation, including an escalation of armed conflict between Saleh’s loyalists

and military units that have joined the opposition. At nightfall Sunday, tensions were high in Sanaa, the capital. Pro-government gunmen and soldiers locked down main streets

around the capital with roadblocks, while tens of thousands of anti-Saleh demonstrators were massed at their protest camp in a central San’a square, worried that a new crackdown could ensue. AHMED AL-HAJ (AP)

Militants Storm Pakistani Base Coordinated strike at naval station kills at least 4, wounds 9 AWhWY^_" FWa_ijWd Islamist militants stormed a naval base in the Pakistani city of Karachi late Sunday, destroying a U.S.-supplied surveillance aircraft, firing rockets and battling commandos sent to subdue them in one of the most brazen attacks in years, officials said. At least four navy personnel were killed and nine wounded in fighting at the Naval Station Mehran that was going on more than four hours after the strike began, said navy spokesman Irfan ul Haq.

8WYaijeho The fact that militants were able to enter one of Pakistan’s largest military bases is another embarrassing blow to the army and will raise questions about whether the attackers had inside information. entered the high-security facility before splitting up into smaller groups, setting off explosions and hiding in the sprawling facility, he said. The coordinated strike rocked the country’s largest city just under three weeks after the death of Osama bin Laden in an American raid on the northwestern garrison city of Abbottabad, an event al-Qaeda allied extremists here have vowed to avenge. The unilateral American raid triggered a strong backlash against Washington, which is trying to support Pakistan in its fight against militants, as well as rare domestic criticism against the armed forces for failing to detect or prevent the operation. Obamamania Hits Irish Hamlet Ced[o]Wbb" ?h[bWdZ Ever since the American president announced on St. Patrick’s Day he would visit his ancestral Irish home, the village of Moneygall has been suffering an incurable case of Obamamania. This roadside hamlet of two pubs, three shops and barely 350 residents has repainted every house, festooned every lamppost and seemingly rebranded every product in preparation for Mon-

day’s visit by President Obama. Locals have stood in line for hours to receive one of 3,000 tickets that will let them meet Moneygall’s most famous son. “We’ve all been caught up in this dream. Nothing in the village seems real,” said Henry Healy, a 26-year-old accountant for a plumbing firm who discovered four years ago he was one of Obama’s closest Irish relatives. Healy received Ticket No. 0001 because he’s an eighth cousin to Obama. As he spoke, the powerful rotors of two U.S. military helicopters thumped in the distance, and a deliveryman arrived with another truckload of spiced Irish fruitbread called brack —

rebranded “Barack’s Brack” this month across Ireland. U.S. and Irish genealogists have detected several other distant Irish cousins of Obama’s living in Ireland and England, and they’re all descendants of Falmouth Kear-

ney, one of Obama’s great-greatgreat grandfathers on his Kansan mother’s side. Every known Irish relative is expected to be standing on Moneygall’s Main Street when Obama begins a six-day, four-nation trip across Europe. None of these events would have been possible but for the village’s Protestant minister, Canon Stephen Neill, who in 2007 pored through birth and baptism records and read about Falmouth Kearney’s baptism, which led to Obama. “He’s about 5 percent Irish, we reckon. But that’s enough,” Neill said of Obama. “They do say there’s a little bit of Irish in everybody.”

utes apart. The centerpiece of the longplanned Memorial Day weekend work is the replacement of four track switches at the Eastern Market Station. Such projects are so complex that they require three days of continuous work to complete. The logistics of creating a safe work space, setting up the train lines to operate in separate sections and providing shuttle buses to bridge the gaps result in the closing of more than one station. When the transit authority schedules such a big shutdown, it also crams in as much other work as time and space allow. So crews will be replacing 700 track fasteners, making repairs to the aerial structure outside the Stadium-Armory Station and fixing 25 escalators and eight elevators in the work zone. The transit authority plans to shut four Metrorail stations along the Blue and Orange lines for the entire Memorial Day weekend, even as thousands of visitors head for events in the nation’s capital. The closings will include the station adjacent to RFK Stadium, site of Stars & Stripes & Spokes, a four-day festival of motorcycle enthusiasts. The Stadium-Armory station will be shut Friday night through the night of May 30, along with the Capitol South, Eastern Market and Potomac Avenue stations. There will be no service on the Blue and Orange lines between Federal Center SW and Minnesota Avenue and

Benning Road. Jim Hughes, Metro’s planning director for such maintenance activities, said Friday that the RFK festival is a new factor with an unknown impact on transit and traffic.

Outlets Coming to Pr. George’s Beltway region to get discount retail stores at National Harbor A collection of high-end outlet stores is slated to land just outside the Beltway as part of a National Harbor deal that will give metropolitan Washington shoppers, accustomed to traveling long distances for low outlet prices, a much closer alternative. Tanger Outlet Center at National Harbor will bring about 80 new stores to rapidly growing Prince George’s County, where residents have long complained about a dearth of retail options. It will be the latest addition to the still-expanding $4 billion waterfront complex of condominiums, stores, restaurants, and hotels.

Not Quite a Repeat Experts say ash from Iceland will not cause another travel nightmare

Ç?j _i dej b_a[bo je X[ Wdoj^_d] ed j^[ iYWb[ j^Wj mWi fheZkY[Z bWij o[Wh$È — PA LL EIN A RSSON, A UNIVERSITY OF

Ash from Grimsvotn hangs in the sky on Sunday. The plume stretched nearly seven miles into the sky.

ICELAND GEOPHYSICIST, COMPARING A NEW VOLCANIC ERUPTION TO LAST YEAR’S BLAST FROM EYJAFJALLAJOKULL.

cist Pall Einarsson told The Associated Press. Britain’s Meteorological Office, which runs Europe’s Volcanic Ash Advisory Center, said the plume from the volcano would spread largely northeast until Monday, but some ash would creep south and east, toward the crowded skies over northern Europe. Where it goes after that depends on the intensity of the eruption and weather patterns.

8[jj[h 9edZ_j_edi Scientists said the eruption was unlikely to have the same global impact as the eruption 80 miles away at the Eyjafjallajokull volcano last year, which stranded 10 million travelers around the world. “That was an unusual volcano, an unusual ash size distribution and unusual weather pattern, which all conspired together to make life difficult in Europe,” University of Iceland geophysi-

M^o ?Y[bWdZ5 Sparsely populated Iceland is one of the world’s most geologically unstable countries, sitting astride the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the Eurasian and North American continental plates rub up against one another. Frequent earthquakes push magma from deep underground toward the surface, and volcanic eruptions are common. The ground is covered by hardened black lava from past eruptions and steam belches from the Earth — harnessed by Icelanders for geothermal power. (AP)

;Whbo 9WdY[bbWj_edi Icelandic air traffic control operator ISAVIA established a 120 nautical mile no-fly zone around the volcano; closed Keflavik airport, the country’s main hub; and canceled all domestic flights. It said Keflavik would stay shut until at least noon Monday, canceling about 40 international flights. TransAtlantic planes — including Air Force One, due to carry President Obama to Ireland later Sunday — were told to stay away from Iceland. The European air traffic control agency in Brussels, Eurocontrol, however, said there was no impact on European or trans-Atlantic flights further south and said it did not anticipate any impact through Monday. An Icelandic volcano was flinging ash, smoke and steam miles into the air Sunday, dropping a thick layer of gray soot in an eruption far more forceful — but likely far less impactful — than the one that grounded planes across Europe last year. The country’s main airport was closed, and pilots were warned to steer clear of Iceland as areas close to the Grimsvotn volcano were plunged into darkness. But scientists said another widespread aviation shutdown is unlikely, in part because the ash from this eruption is coarser and falling to Earth more quickly. The volcano, which lies beneath the ice of the uninhabited Vatnajokull glacier in southeast Iceland, began erupting Saturday for the first time since 2004. It was the volcano’s largest eruption in 100 years. The ash from Grimsvotn — about 120 miles east of the capital, Reykjavik — rained down on nearby buildings and fields Sunday, though no ash fell on the capital.

8WYaijeho Volcanic eruptions, which often spark flash flooding by melting glaciers, usually just cause a stir in Iceland. But when they draw global attention, it’s in a spectacular way.

The 1783 eruption of the Laki volcano spewed a toxic cloud over Europe, killing tens of thousands of people. Crops failed and famine spread. In April 2010, the Eyjafjallajokull eruption, above, led officials to close Europe’s airspace for five days for fear that ash could harm jet engines. Thousands of flights were grounded, leaving travelers stuck as airlines lost millions of dollars. (AP)

University of Iceland geophysicist Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson said the Grimsvotn eruption was “much bigger and more intensive” than last year’s eruption. “There is a very large area in southeast Iceland where there is almost total darkness and heavy fall of ash,” he said. “But it is not spreading nearly as much. The winds are not as strong as they were [last year].” He said the ash now is coarser than in last year’s eruption, falling to the ground more quickly. Grimsvotn’s eruption in 2004 lasted for several days and briefly disrupted international flights. The volcano also erupted in 1998, 1996 and 1993. Scientists said there were already signs that the latest eruption was tapering off. “The intensity of the eruption has decreased markedly overnight,” Matthew Roberts of the Icelandic Meteorological Office told the BBC, saying the ash plume had fallen to about 6 miles high. Gudmundsson said the duration of the latest eruption would probably be short. “In two or three days, the worst should be over,” he said. (AP)

Americans got used to staycations during the recession, but as the economy begins to recover, many are now ready to graduate to the short-stay getaway for relaxation and adventure without the financial drain of a longer vacation. Here are some tips for short trips that are both fun and frugal.

Time is of the essence when you only have a few days to unwind, making air travel a logical choice. So don’t shy away; just keep your options open because prices depend on lots of factors, including the carrier and competition, says Hotwire group president Clem Bason.

J^[ DWj_edWbi Nationals pitcher Jordan Zimmermann was in the midst of a onehit gem Sunday afternoon, mixing his 94 mph fastball with a biting curveball as well as he ever has since his debut in the big leagues in April 2009. But even in the best of outings, the 6-foot-2 righthander, who turns 25 on Monday, still has moments when his relative inexperience gets the best of him. That fact, combined with Washington’s season-long struggles at the plate, ended up costing the Nationals in a 2-1 loss to Baltimore Sunday before 33,626 fans at Camden Yards. With the Nationals up 1-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Zimmermann threw a hanging curveball over the heart of the plate on an 0-2 count to Orioles slugger Vladimir Guerrero, and Baltimore’s designated hitter promptly scorched a line drive, two-run homer that landed three rows into the left field bleachers. Guerrero’s home run was just the third Zimmermann has allowed in 54 1/3 innings this season. Zimmermann never did make it out of the seventh inning, which only made his masterful work through six — he struck out five and gave up just one hit — that much more difficult to stomach. Zimmermann, whose previous scheduled start was skipped when last Tuesday’s game against Pittsburgh was postponed by rain, finished the afternoon having given up four hits and two earned runs on 94 pitches. New revelations from Lance Armstrong’s former teammates on “60 Minutes,” combined with recent requests by federal authorities for evidence in France, have fed a sense of growing trouble for the world’s most famous cyclist. One of Armstrong’s former teammates, Tyler Hamilton, told “60 Minutes” he saw the seven-time Tour de France winner use EPO during his first Tour victory in 1999. Meanwhile, The Associated Press reported last month that federal investigators looking into the Armstrong case recently asked French authorities to turn over evidence, including Armstrong’s urine samples from the same year. Though an investigation by cycling’s international federation dismissed those controversial samples, they are clearly back in play as the feds investigate whether Armstrong’s U.S. Postal team engaged in systematic doping, a case that could lead to charges of fraud and conspiracy. Armstrong, an international celebrity and cancer survivor who has raised millions of dollars to fight the disease, has denied doping and has never tested positive. An investigation by the International Cycling Union followed and concluded, in 2006, that the samples were mishandled and couldn’t be used to prove anything. The “60 Minutes” piece, portions of which were aired on the “CBS Evening News” on Thursday and Friday, also uses unidentified sources to report that former Armstrong teammate and close friend George Hincapie has testified to a grand jury that he and Armstrong supplied each other with enduranceboosting EPO. Hincapie released a statement Friday saying he did not talk to “60 Minutes.” (AP)

shorts and legions of fans. “Cul de Sac” is a whimsical skip through suburban life with Alice, her friends Beni and Dill; elder brother Petey; and classmates at Blisshaven Academy preschool. It’s all about sidewalk discoveries, childhood invention and parents who are one step behind their children’s antics. Thompson, 53, arrived at print syndication in an era of strapped newspapers and comics sections that are so shrunken they could

double as eye charts. And then there’s the second cruel twist. Less than a year after “Cul de Sac” became syndicated, Thompson learned he has Parkinson’s, the incurable neurodegenerative disease that robs patients of motor skills. Yet here is Thompson, grinning behind his wire rims on a sunny March afternoon as he walks the half-dozen blocks from a taqueria to his modest brick home in Arlington. His gait is tentative. Each day with the disease, he says, brings “a new normality.” But each day also brings the chance to sit at the drafting board, ink-dipped crow quill in hand, and explore new worlds. As Alice says: “Every day, I test the boundaries of my domain.”

If you’re really focused on Memorial Day as a symbolic unifier of the Union and the Confederacy (NERD), we’re sending you to the new Lincoln restaurant (1110 Vermont Ave. NW), which has weekday happy hours from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Happy hour will run on Memorial Day, meaning liberty, justice and $5 wine for all. Beer is $3 (for PBR and Budweiser) or $5 for more respectable brews; cocktails are $5; and the Emancipation Punch ($34, but it supposedly serves six) tastes like freedom. And gin. Mostly gin. Did you know Lincoln didn’t even drink?

Bill Watterson receives reporters about as often as Charlie Brown receives a valentine. Long viewed as the J.D. Salinger of comics, the creator of the retired and still-beloved strip “Calvin and Hobbes” guards his privacy by rebuffing most every entreaty for an interview. Now, however, comes a question about a certain “kid strip” cartoonist. One name, one talent entices Watterson to give what his syndicate says is only his second interview in two decades: Richard Thompson — creator of “Cul de Sac” and father to little “Alice Otterloop” and her child’s-eye view of life in Washington’s suburbs. “Where to start? ...” Watterson writes in an email. “The strip has a unique and honest voice, a seemingly intuitive feel for what comics do best.” On May 28 in Boston, Thompson will learn whether he has won the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award for cartoonist of the year. It is his second-straight nomination for a strip that was syndicated almost four years ago. “Cul de Sac” is carried by nearly 150 newspapers, including The Washington Post, where it began. It has spawned four books, animated

Memorial Day is a time to feel patriotic, since the fact that we now just have one Memorial Day is a testament to the healing of the country post-Civil War (before that time, states had Memorial Days whenever they wanted). He wasn’t a Civil War president, but George Washington did have an estate near here, and Memorial Day is a chance to visit it and marvel at the vision 8o <_edW and selflessness of our PkXb_d Founding Fathers. Did we mention there’ll be wine? Mount Vernon’s Sunset Celebration (6-9 p.m., May Fri.-Sun., 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, Mount Vernon, Va.) is a family-friendly festival where all the usual Mount Vernon activities take place — just in the evening. So there are tours and period dancing and people in costumes, but there’s also a sunset over the rolling Virginia hills and wine on the estate’s lawn. Tickets are $18 ($12 for kids) and available at Mountvernon.org.

Area 51, the military installation in the Nevada desert about 75 miles north of Las Vegas, has attracted rumor and speculation for decades, fed largely by the government’s refusal to discuss exactly what goes on there. Journalist Annie Jacobsen tries to get to the bottom of these secrets in “Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base” (Little, Brown, $27.99). The result is an Jacobsen informative history of Cold War spy planes sandwiched between an outrageous — and thinly sourced — tale involving Josef Mengele, Josef Stalin and flying saucers. Area 51 was organized in the 1950s under the auspices of the Atomic Energy Commission, the successor to the Manhattan Project, which used the adjacent Nevada Test and Training Range to test atomic bombs. Because of this relationship with the nuclear program,

“Area 51” purports to uncover that the Roswell, N.M., crash wasn’t by aliens at all.

Jacobsen says, everything that happened at Area 51 was, by default, a secret — “born classified.” “The essence of Area 51 was that everything that happened there happened big,” Jacobsen says. “There was a deeply patriotic sense that the free world depended on the work being performed at Area 51.” She draws on declassified documents and interviews with the participants to paint a picture of “The Right Stuff” operating sub rosa.

The Central Intelligence Agency, Lockheed and the military developed the U-2 spy plane and its successor the A-12 “Oxcart” at Area 51, Jacobsen writes. She follows these remarkable machines, and the pioneering men who built and flew them, from drawing board to deathdefying flight, including Francis Gary Powers’s ill-fated 1960 U-2 mission over the Soviet Union. Which brings us to the NaziSoviet UFO. Citing interviews with a single unnamed former engineer from government contractor EG&G — now part of URS Corp. — Jacobsen purports to lift the veil on what really crashed near

Roswell, N.M., in 1947 and what happened to the wreckage when it got to Nevada. The craft, she writes, wasn’t an alien spaceship, nor was it a weather balloon, as the military alleged in its clumsy cover story. It was, according to Jacobsen, a Nazi-inspired Soviet spy plane with Cyrillic letters embossed on the hull, crewed by malformed adolescents, two of whom survived the crash. This “revelation,” such as it is, will no doubt gratify those who already suspected as much. Unfortunately, these chapters, which diverge so radically from the rest of the book in journalistic rigor, may turn off readers who otherwise would enjoy learning about the creativity, political acumen and courage of the high-flying cold warriors who sought to protect the free world in the decades after World War II. 9Wdd[iÊ Jef Fh_p[ <eh ÉJh[[Ê Terrence Malick’s expansive drama “The Tree of Life” has won the top honor at the Cannes Film Festival, while Kirsten Dunst took the bestactress prize for the apocalyptic saga “Melancholia.” The prize was accepted Sunday by two “Tree of Life” producers for the press-shy Malick, who skipped all public events at the festival. Malick, who has made only five films in a nearly 40-year career, previously won the directing prize in 1979 for “Days of Heaven” on his last trip to Cannes. “The Tree of Life” was the first American film to win top honors at Cannes since back-to-back recipients in 2003 (Gus Van Sant’s “Elephant”) and 2004 (Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11”). THE MAIN EVENT: On June 4, they’ll say their vows at the swanky Mansion on O Street. HOW THEY MET: His reggae band was playing at a private party at which she was a guest. Later, he struck up a conversation with a 3-year-old girl who’d been watching. “I liked how he was not only great with kids, but he related to them as well,” Abigail says. FIRST DATE: His place — he cooked her a steak dinner. HOW HE PROPOSED: In Florence, Italy. “Our hotel had double-booked us, and our train tickets were wrong. It was hot, she was in a crabby mood, and the hair dryer in our hotel room sucked up her hair and I had to cut it out.” He proposed anyway, because “sometimes you have to turn lemons into limoncello.” MOST-HATED CLOTHING ITEM: “Her maxi dress, which is really just a muumuu.” STUPIDEST FIGHT: “The day he called my maxi dress a muumuu.”
