‘We would’ve gotten away with it if it weren’t for anyone with eyes’
Indianapolis-area police are warning people to look out for a 14-foot Burmese python that’s on the loose. The Beech Grove Police Department said the snake is missing from a home near Indianapolis. Benny Tarplee said he thinks his pet, named Vine, escaped late last week and he suspects she’s just hiding somewhere. He said she is a “big baby” and no threat to humans. The Indianapolis Zoo said she may be a threat to cats, dogs and small children. (AP)
Three men were arrested in Lebanon, Maine, on Sunday after they were spotted dragging a stolen 25-foot shed behind a pickup truck, the Portland Press Herald reported. Maine State Police said troopers were called by a concerned citizen who spotted the men stealing the shed from a foreclosed property on Pork Street. The thieves had not loaded the shed onto a trailer, but were simply dragging it on the ground. (EXPRESS)

Airport delays
Traffic concerns
Though gas prices have risen recently, nearly 9 out of 10 people from the Washington region told AAA that they will drive at least 50 miles from home this Memorial Day, nearly 5 percent more than last year. Another 84,900 Washington-area residents will fly, a 7.5 percent increase from 2017. Travel by train, bus, rail and cruise ship will increase by 1 percent, AAA said. The Transportation Security Administration expects this weekend will set the stage for a recordbreaking summer travel season.
A recent analysis of federal transportation data found that in the D.C. metro area, Dulles International Airport is expected to have the worst airport departure delays leading up to Memorial Day. A report from financial advice website ValuePenguin found that Dulles had an average flight delay of 54 minutes, followed by Reagan National Airport and BaltimoreWashington International Marshall Airport tied with average delays of nearly 52 minutes. John F. Kennedy Airport has the worst delays overall.
John B. Townsend II of AAA Mid-Atlantic says 4:30 to 7 p.m. today is “the worst time” to travel, and that “the best time to travel will vary from place to place” around the region. Those headed for beaches in Maryland and Delaware also will find their route snarled by traffic in Annapolis for the U.S. Naval Academy’s annual commissioning week. The formal commissioning is Friday, but thousands of friends and families have been gathered there all week for various events.

Jealous and Shea raise more cash among Dems
BALTIMORE COUNTY
verbatim
MARYLAND Maryland Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ben Jealous has pulled ahead of his rivals in fundraising, solidifying his position among the front-runners to challenge a far better-funded Gov. Larry Hogan this fall. But it’s still anybody’s race, as neither Jealous nor his opponents have enough money to mount a significant media push in the expensive Washington media market ahead of the June 26 primary. Only one, Baltimore lawyer James Shea, has more than a million dollars on hand. “There’s no question that the smart, large money appears to be staying out of the Democratic race for governor, largely because Hogan appears invulnerable, and without a clear frontrunner on the Democratic side,” said Keith Haller, a Maryland pollster and independent political analyst. That leaves the candidates — including Prince George’s

Baker lags behind in funds ahead of Md. gubernatorial primary
Maryland Democratic gubernatorial candidates, from left, Rushern Baker, Valerie Ervin, Jim Shea, Alec Ross, Richard Madaleno, Krish Vignarajah, James Jones and Ben Jealous prepare Tuesday for a primary debate.
County Executive Rushern Baker III, who has led in early polling — with little or no ability to steer the race through largescale advertising, Haller said. The ticket led by Jealous, a former NAACP president, has raised $974,274 since mid-January. Shea’s ticket raised $671,674 during the same period. Baker and his running mate, El i zabeth Embr y, took i n $542,867 during the reporting period, an amount that political analyst Todd Eberly described
as “not impressive.” “That suggests that the people who are voting with their wallets have not decided that he’s the front-runner in the race,” said Eberly, a political scientist at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Hogan raised more than $1.2 million between April 10 and May 15, amassing more money in 35 days than some of his Democratic challengers have taken in since they launched their campaigns last year.

Hogan ends E-ZPass fee of $7.50 for new customers
The Montgomery County Council has passed a special appropriation that will create a legal fund for immigrants who live in the county and could face deportation. Maryland officials are ending the $7.50 E-ZPass transponder fee for new customers, offering a little relief to drivers facing soaring prices at the gas pump. Gov. Activists rally against Amazon HQ2 bids Critics say government shouldn’t give subsidies to lure the tech giant THE DISTRICT Activists are organizing against the D.C. region’s bids for Amazon’s second headquarters, saying governments shouldn’t offer tax subsidies to a wealthy company when they haven’t devoted enough money to public schools, mass transit and the poor. In a meeting Tuesday night, about 100 activists from more than a dozen social justice and workers’ rights groups gathered in a Northwest D.C. church to call for more transparency in the bids submitted by the District, Maryland and Virginia. The groups say no public financial incentives should be included in the offers. Opponents have dubbed their campaign “Obviously Not DC” and “Obviously Not DMV,” a play on the D.C. government’s “Obviously DC” pitch. “I think the allure of having Amazon in the region is a strong one, to sell D.C. as a place that’s tech-friendly or another Silicon Valley and as a place where people want to live,” meeting organizer Erin Shields said. “But to be honest, we don’t have the infrastructure now for all the people coming into the city.” The region has three of the 20 localities on Amazon’s list of

finalists for a second North American headquarters the company says would bring at least 50,000 jobs and $5 billion in investment. (Amazon CEO Jeffrey Bezos owns The Washington Post and Express.) The activists, who are being organized by the local chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, are part of a relatively small but increasingly vocal opposition against cities’ attempts to woo the tech giant. pressure from gentrification. “If you care about racial justice, please recognize this move for what it is,” said Maurice Cook, of Serve Your City, a nonprofit that serves at-risk children in D.C. “We will be removed ... This city’s culture is already under siege, and this would be the final nail.” Stephanie Sneed, of the Fair Budget Coalition, said District officials shouldn’t offer Amazon tax breaks when they haven’t fully funded services for the homeless, immigrants, victims of domestic violence and residents seeking affordable housing. “This is not about Amazon,” Sneed said, “but about the future of this city.” KATHERINE SHAVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
OVERTIME PAY IN D.C.
The amount D.C.’s government spent on employee overtime in fiscal year 2017, more than doubling the $40.5 million spent during the 2011 fiscal year, the D.C. Auditor’s Office found. Much of that boost was concentrated at public safety agencies, with just four accounting for nearly 70 percent of the increase. Auditors recommended that District agencies monitor their payrolls more tightly and hire more full-time staff to avoid the need for overtime payments. Court: President can’t block critics on Twitter
GO AHEAD, HIT SNOOZE
Sleeping in on weekends may add years
POLITICS A federal judge ruled Wednesday that President Donald Trump is violating the First Amendment when he blocks critics on Twitter because of their political views. U.S. District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald in Manhattan stopped short of ordering Trump or a subordinate to stop the practice of blocking critics from viewing his Twitter account, saying it was enough to point out that it was unconstitutional. “A declaratory judgment should be sufficient, as no government official — including the President — is above the law, and all government officials are presumed to follow the law as has been declared,” Buchwald wrote. The judge did not issue an order against Trump, and the plaintiffs did not ask for one. But in cases like this, plaintiffs can, in theory, go back and ask for such an order, and if it is not obeyed, the violator can be held in contempt. Buchwald rejected the assertion that an injunction can never be lodged against the president but said “it is unnecessary to enter that legal thicket at this time.” The case was brought last July by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University and seven individuals blocked by Trump after criticizing the

Republican president. Kerri Kupec, a spokeswoman for the Department of Justice, said in an email: “We respectfully disagree with the court’s decision and are considering our next steps.” Jameel Jaffer, the Knight Institute’s executive director, said in a release that his organization was pleased. “The president’s practice of blocking critics on Twitter is pernicious and unconstitutional, and we hope this ruling will bring it to an end,” he said. The lawsuit was filed after Trump blocked some individuals from @realDonaldTrump, a 9-year-old Twitter account with over 50 million followers, after
each of them tweeted a message critical of Trump or his policies in reply to a tweet he had sent. Justice Department lawyers had argued it was Trump’s prerogative to block followers, no different from the president deciding in a room filled with people not to listen to some. Buchwald ruled that the tweets were “governmental in nature.” “The President presents the @realDonaldTrump account as being a presidential account as opposed to a personal account and, more importantly, uses the account to take actions that can be taken only by the President as President,” the judge said.
Psychologists from the Stress Research Institute at Stockholm University tracked more than 38,000 people in Sweden over 13 years, with a focus on their weekend versus weekday sleeping habits. The study, published Wednesday in the Journal of Sleep Research, found that people under 65 who slept five hours or less every night, all week, did not live as long as those who consistently slept seven hours a night. But weekend snoozers — people who slept for fewer than the recommended seven hours each weeknight, but caught an extra hour or two on the weekends — lived just as long as people who always slept seven hours, the authors of the study reported. Scientists will try to ID the Loch Ness monster
For centuries, visitors to Scotland’s Loch Ness have described seeing a monster that some believe lurks in the depths. To confirm or debunk those tales, a New Zealand scientist will lead a team to the lake in June to take water samples and conduct DNA tests to determine what species live there. One theory is that Nessie is a long-necked plesiosaur that survived the period when dinosaurs became extinct. Another theory: It’s a giant catfish. (AP)

Ga. may elect 1st black woman to be governor POLITICS Stacey Abrams, a Yale-educated attorney and romance novelist who served a decade in the Georgia Legislature, has gained a shot at becoming the first black woman elected governor in U.S. history. Abrams, 44, easily won the Democratic nomination in Tuesday’s primary, and strong turnout among Democrats has fueled hopes she can take back the governor’s mansion in November in a state where Republicans hold every statewide office. “We are writing the next chapter of Georgia’s future, where no one is unseen, no one is unheard and no one is uninspired,” Abrams said after defeating fellow Democrat and former colleague Stacey Evans. Republicans won’t have their nominee until a July 24 runoff between Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Secretary of State Brian Kemp. Georgia hasn’t elected a Democratic governor since 1998. And no Democrat seeking that office in the past 20 years has gotten more than 46 percent of the vote. Abrams is betting she can succeed by abandoning the political playbook of previous Democratic nominees, who ran centrist campaigns aimed at luring back older white voters. She is instead hoping to appeal to young voters and nonwhites who have been less likely to participate in elections. BEN NADLER AND RUSS BYNUM (AP)

nation+world Pompeo says diplomat described sonic attack similar to one in Cuba GUANGZHOU, CHINA A U.S. government employee in southern China reported abnormal sensations of sound and pressure, the State Department said Wednesday, recalling similar experiences among American diplomats in Cuba who fell ill. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo described it as a “serious medical incident.” In an emailed notice to American citizens in China, the department said it wasn’t currently known what caused the symptoms in the city of Guangzhou, where an American consulate is located.

“A U.S. government employee in China recently reported subtle and vague, but abnormal, sensations of sound and pressure,” the notice said. “The U.S. government is taking these reports seriously and has informed its official staff in China of this event.” The department said it wasn’t aware of any similar situations in China, either within the diplomatic community or among others. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who met Wednesday with Pompeo in Washington, said that China had been investigating and hasn’t found any organization or individual responsible for “such a sonic influence.” Pompeo commended China’s response, saying it was honoring

Earlier, Pompeo told the House Foreign Affairs Committee that the medical indications of the incident in Guangzhou “are very similar and entirely consistent with the medical indications” that have harmed at least 24 Americans in Havana. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the U.S. Embassy learned on Friday that the Guangzhou employee had shown clinical findings during medical testing similar to patients with mild traumatic brain injury, known commonly as a concussion. That is the same clinical finding that doctors treating the Cuba patients at the University of Philadelphia have found in those patients.

NATIONAL SECURITY The Pentagon on Wednesday disinvited China from participating in a major naval exercise, signaling mounting U.S. anger over Beijing’s expanded military footprint in disputed areas of the South China Sea. A Pentagon spokesman, Lt. Col. Christopher Logan, said the Defense Department reversed an earlier invitation to the Chinese navy to participate in the Rim of the Pacific drills, biennial naval exercises that involve more than two dozen nations, over Beijing’s decision to place anti-ship missiles, surface-to-air missiles and electronic jammers on the contested Spratly Islands. China has also landed bomber aircraft at Woody Island, farther to the north in the disputed Paracel Islands, the Pentagon said. “While China has maintained that the construction of the islands is to ensure safety at sea, navigation assistance, search and rescue, fisheries protection and other non-military functions, the placement of these weapon systems is only for military use,” Logan said in a statement. While the Trump administration does not back any of the rival claims to the islands and smaller features, it has insisted on freedom of navigation and challenged Chinese claims of sovereignty over virtually all of the South China Sea, which U.S. allies in the region see as key to their economic interests and security. to soar. On top of that, the federal government imposed a new rule in December that requires drivers to be on the road for no more than 11 hours at a time and track their time by an electronic device so they can’t cheat. “It’s as bad as it’s ever been” to find drivers, said Bob Costello, chief economist at the American Trucking Associations. America had a shortage of 51,000 truck drivers at the end of last year, Costello found, up from a shortage of 36,000 in 2016. He says that “without a doubt” it’s going to be even higher this year, even though many companies are giving double-digit raises. Manufacturers are complaining that higher shipping costs are causing their profits to fall. Economists warn those costs are almost certainly going to end up resulting in higher prices for everyday items. “Every single good ends up on a truck at some point,” said Peter Boockvar, chief investment officer at Bleakley Advisory Group. “Businesses that use trucking to receive and ship goods are going to do their best to pass on the costs to the rest of us.”
Federal judges appointed by Republican presidents give black defendants sentences that are, on average, six to seven months longer than the sentences they give to similar white defendants, according to a new working paper from Alma Cohen and Crystal Yang of Harvard Law School. That racial sentencing disparity is about twice as large as the one observed among judges appointed by Democrats. Cohen and Yang examined over 500,000 sentences handed down by nearly 1,400 federal judges between 1999 and 2015. They estimate that differences between how Democratic and Republican judges treat black and nonblack defendants account for 65 percent of the total racial sentencing gap observed at the federal level. They also found that differences between how Republican and Democratic judges treat black and white defendants grew larger after the Supreme Court’s 2005 decision in United States v. Booker, which gave federal judges much more leeway to depart from federal sentencing guidelines. Black defendants fared particularly poorly in states with high amounts of population-level racial bias, which tend to be in the South. Research has shown a similar bias in these states when it comes to capital punishment.
BUSINESS Joyce Brenny, chief executive of Brenny Transportation in Minnesota, gave her truck drivers a 15 percent raise this year, but she still can’t find enough workers for a job that now pays $80,000 a year. A year ago, when customers would call Brenny, she could almost always get their goods loaded on a truck and moving within a day or two. Now she’s warning customers it could take two weeks to find an available truck and driver. Shipping costs have skyrocketed in the U.S. in 2018, one of the clearest signs yet of a strong economy that might be starting to overheat. Higher transportation costs are beginning to cause prices of anything that spends time on a truck to rise. Amazon, for example, just implemented a 20 percent hike for its Prime program that delivers goods to customers in two days, and General Mills, the maker of Cheerios and Betty Crocker, said prices of some of its cereals and snacks are going up because of an “unprecedented” rise in freight costs. The trucking industry shows how an extraordinary labor
shortage in one corner of the economy can spill out and affect the economy more broadly. “I’ve never seen it like this, ever,” said Brenny, who has been in the trucking industry for 30 years. “It doesn’t matter what the load even pays. There are just not drivers.” Trucking executives say their industry is experiencing a perfect storm: The economic upswing is creating heavy demand for trucks, but it’s hard to find drivers with unemployment so low. Young Americans are ignoring the job openings because they fear self-driving trucks will soon dominate the industry. Waymo, the driverless car company owned by Alphabet, just launched a self-driving truck pilot program in Atlanta, although trucking industry veterans argue it will be a long time before drivers go away entirely. Trucking companies hope they can lure more drivers with higher pay, signing bonuses and shorter hours. The job doesn’t require a high school degree and someone can obtain a truck license in a matter of weeks. But many say the biggest hindrance is that the job doesn’t have a lot
Shipping costs soar As driver pay rises quickly and diesel fuel costs tick up, shipping companies are charging higher and higher rates to move goods. It now costs more than $1.85 a mile to ship a “dry good” that doesn’t require refrigeration or special accommodation, a nearly 40 percent increase from the price a year ago, according to data from DAT Solutions. Shipping costs hit an alltime high earlier this year and have remained near that level ever since, according to DAT Solutions and the Cass Freight Index Report. (TWP)
of cachet in modern society, a perception that’s hard to change. “You are away from home and family and friends on a regular basis, and the job is not highly respected,” said Donald Broughton of Broughton Capital and author of the Cass Freight Index publication. The U.S. has had a truck driver shortage for years, but experts say it’s hitting a crisis level this year. There’s even more demand for truckers now as just about every sector of the economy is expanding and online sales continue

Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, now has a permanent security clearance, according to a person briefed on the matter. The FBI background check into Kushner’s financial history and foreign contacts took more than a year. His clearance level was downgraded in February, blocking him from approved access to some of the nation’s most sensitive secrets. The clearance suggests that investigators’ scrutiny of Kushner has decreased significantly. In addition, he recently sat for six to seven hours of questioning by special counsel Robert Mueller’s team, according to the source. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Four retired high-ranking military officers in Guatemala were convicted Wednesday of crimes against humanity and other charges in the 1981 rape and torture of a young woman and the disappearance of her teenage brother. The decision was the first court judgment over a forced disappearance of a child during Guatemala’s civil war. Sentences of 58 years were ordered for former army chief of staff Benedicto Lucas Garcia, ex-military intelligence chief Manuel Antonio Callejas and ex-military intelligence officer Hugo Zaldana Rojas. Former commander Francisco Luis Gordillo was sentenced to 33 years. (AP)
Paige Patterson, a former head of the Southern Baptist Convention, was removed Wednesday as president of a Fort Worth, Texas, seminary following allegations of “unbiblical teaching.” The Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary board of trustees said in a statement that Patterson, 75, was dismissed after a 13-hour meeting “to move in the direction of new leadership.” Patterson is accused of remarking on a teenage girl’s body, saying female seminarians should work hard to look attractive and that abused women should almost always stay with their husbands.

The survey found that while unemployment is just 3.9 percent, financial security evades many Americans. The policy approved Thursday by owners seeks to prevent kneeling protests during the anthem.

NFL will start fining teams for protests Policy tells players to stand for the anthem or wait in the locker room while it’s playing ATLANTA NFL owners approved a new policy Thursday aimed at addressing the firestorm over national anthem protests, permitting players to stay in the locker room during the “The Star-Spangled Banner” but requiring them to stand if they come to the field. Commissioner Roger Goodell said the change was approved unanimously by the owners at their spring meeting in Atlanta, but it was met with immediate skepticism by the players’ union.
“We want people to be respectful of the national anthem. We want people to stand,” Goodell said. “That’s all personnel, and to make sure they treat this moment in a respectful fashion. That’s something that we think we owe. We’ve been very sensitive on making sure that we give players choices, but we do believe that moment is an important moment.” In a sign that players were not part of the discussions, any violations of the policy would result
Union wasn’t consulted After passing a new policy that gives NFL players the right to wait out the national anthem in the locker room but requires them to stand for it on the field, NFL owners touted the change as a compromise. The NFL Players Union said it was not consulted by the league and that the vote itself “contradicts the statements made to our player leadership by Commissioner Roger Goodell and the Chairman of the NFL’s Management Council John Mara ... about the principles, values and patriotism of our League.” The NFLPA said it will challenge any part of the new policy that violates the collective bargaining agreement. (AP)
in fines against the team — not the players. The owners spent several hours addressing the contentious issue — which has reached all the way to the White House. Former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem in 2016, a quiet but powerful
protest against police brutality and racial inequities in America. Other players took up the cause, and the gesture carried on last season even after Kaepernick left the 49ers and failed to land a job with another team. President Trump turned the anthem protests into a campaign issue, saying the NFL should fire any player who takes a knee during “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The NFL hasn’t gone that far, but Kaepernick has yet to sign with another team, and one of his former teammates and fellow protesters, safety Eric Reid, is also out of work. Both have filed collusion grievances against the NFL. “The NFL chose to not consult the union in the development of this new ‘policy,’ ” the NFLPA said in a statement. “NFL players have shown their patriotism through their social activism, their community service, in support of our military and law enforcement and yes, through their protests to raise awareness about the issues they care about.”
Breaking nearly six months of silence on the issue, USA Gymnastics CEO Kerry Perry, below, told legislators Thursday that she was “appalled and sickened by the despicable crimes of Larry Nassar” and apologized to the hundreds of women and girls abused by the imprisoned former sports doctor. Perry spoke to the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee at a hearing in which leaders of U.S. Olympic teams were grilled about protecting athletes from sexual abuse. Steve Penny resigned as CEO of USA Gymnastics in March 2017, months after the initial reports of Nassar’s crimes. The entire board of USA Gymnastics resigned after threats from the USOC to decertify the organization. (AP)

Wayne Rooney, the English soccer star being courted by D.C. United, will visit Washington today for a physical and meetings with club officials, according to people familiar with the situation. First impression: Fiery Smith will inspire Redskins practice bubble in Ashburn, the new franchise QB worked the ball all over the field. A short scramble led to an impromptu pass to Josh Doctson. Another went to Jamison Crowder down the sideline. A play fake saw Smith throw a frozen rope to fullback Elijah Wellman. Coach Jay Gruden nodded in approval as Smith spread the ball around. Gruden knew Smith could quickly adapt to a West Coast scheme similar to the one he ran with the Chiefs, but everyone wanted to see how he looked applying what he learned by diagramming plays on a blackboard. Smith said adapting to Gruden’s offense isn’t a huge change, likening the experience to learning different Latin-based languages. “There are a lot of similarities but it’s not the same language,” he said. “I guess that’s the best analogy I can make.” When Smith was looking crisp, safety D. J. Swearinger was waiting. The defense doesn’t like being sliced apart, even in non-contact drills. Swearinger remembered how Smith led the Chiefs to a 29-20 win over the Redskins last season. So when the quarterback tried to beat the safety with

Quarterback Alex Smith saw Paul Richardson slipping behind deep coverage, a chance to make a statement in his first Redskins workout open to reporters. The ball floated a little, but it came down in the receiver’s hands. There’s nothing wrong with pushing things a little bit, Smith said as he went through his first set of organized team activities since officially being traded from Kansas City in March. Even precision throws and short completions often arrived with rocket-like intensity Wednesday, forcing the defense to match Smith’s passion and elevating the atmosphere of the session to that of a summer practice. The Redskins hope that fire will make fans forget about botched negotiations with former quarterback Kirk Cousins, who is in Minnesota now. His No. 8 jersey was worn Wednesday by third-string quarterback Kevin Hogan. For Smith, the practice was an opportunity to showcase his leadership and continue to learn a new offense while shaking off a bit of rust. Inside the Redskins’

another deep ball to Richardson, Swearinger tipped it away. “I already know what he’s going to do,” Swearinger said. “[He’s] trying to look me off.” When Smith later tried to hit Richardson again, safety Montae Nicholson deflected it. Richardson and Nicholson traded taunts for 30 seconds. Things suddenly got heated. “Competition is the only way to get better,” Smith said. “You’ve got to make each other better.”
Improvement comes in practice, and Smith upped everyone’s game. Even the running backs, well aware that second-round draft pick Derrius Guice is the tentative starter, blasted through holes with noticeable effort. In his first open practice, Smith looked like the Redskins’ leader. That didn’t take long. Rick Snider has covered sports in Washington since 1978. Follow him on Twitter @Snide_Remarks
‘HARD KNOCKS’ IN CLEVELAND
NFL Films: Browns were ‘our No. 1 pick’
Despite Cleveland’s 0-16 record last season and decades of futility, NFL Films insisted this week that the Browns were the team it wanted to feature on this summer’s HBO “Hard Knocks” series, which follows the grind and drama of training camp. Drafting Baker Mayfield, left, first overall added to the intrigue. “We got the team we wanted — our No. 1 pick, the Browns — to be on our show,” NFL Films executive Ken Rodgers said. NBA Moments after body-camera video of his arrest was released Wednesday, Milwaukee Bucks rookie Sterling Brown said his experience with the city’s police department was “wrong and shouldn’t happen to anybody.” He went on to criticize officers sharply for “a simple parking ticket” that turned into “an attempt at police intimidation, followed by the unlawful use of physical force.” Brown, 23, was tased during a routine parking violation in January and reportedly plans to file a civil rights lawsuit over the episode. Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales said in a brief statement Wednesday that officers had been disciplined for acting “inappropriately.” The city had been bracing for the release of the video. Mayor Tom Barrett had warned it was “disturbing.” Brown, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard, was arrested around 2 a.m. on Jan. 26, when an officer spotted a vehicle parked across two spots reserved for disabled drivers at a Walgreens. Brown was initially arrested on a possible misdemeanor charge of resisting or obstructing an officer, but police did not refer the case to prosecutors after an internal review that included viewing the footage. Before playing in a game that day, Brown told reporters that bruises and scratches on his face were from “a personal issue.” CINDY BOREN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

4 ways to mark Memorial Day MATT MCCLAIN ( THE WASHINGTON POST)
No place in the country marks Memorial Day quite like Washington, where patriotic tributes are both solemn and emphatic. Here are some of the events planned for this weekend and the holiday on Monday. FRITZ HAHN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Complete with floats and marching bands, the National Memorial Day Parade winds down Constitution Avenue NW each May.
Battleground National Cemetery’s Memorial Day Commemoration One of the country’s smallest national cemeteries is a 1-acre sliver of land on Georgia Avenue NW. It holds the remains of 40 Civil War soldiers who were killed defending Washington during the 1864 Battle of Fort Stevens and one Union veteran who later chose to be buried there. A tribute — held Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon — includes the reading of the names of the dead and a flag-laying ceremony.
Rolling Thunder Each year over Memorial Day weekend, the motorcycle riders of Rolling Thunder remember POWs and MIAs. The main event is a ride that begins in the North Pentagon parking lot at noon Sunday and passes across Memorial Bridge, down Constitution Avenue to the Capitol and back to West Potomac Park, followed by speeches near the Lincoln Memorial. The best viewing spots are near the Lincoln Memorial, where you can watch the sea of bikes flowing over Memorial Bridge.
National Memorial Day Concert
National Memorial Day Parade
This free concert, held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on Sunday and televised nationally on PBS, features the National Symphony Orchestra and military bands, along with Broadway stars Cynthia Erivo, Megan Hilty and Alfie Boe. There will also be a tribute to the 70th anniversary of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, which allowed women to join the military. Gates to the concert open at 5 p.m., and the concert begins at 8.
The annual parade down Constitution Avenue NW features military units, veterans organizations, fife and drum corps, floats and marching bands. Guests and performers at this year’s parade, which begins at 2 p.m. Monday and stretches from Seventh to 17th streets NW, include members of the Tuskegee Airmen, country singers Trace Adkins and Jerrod Niemann, and Miss America Cara Mund.

We would go there for events and stuff when I was in high school at St. Albans. I would replace my dearly departed Armand’s pizza with Uno Pizzeria & Grill at Union Station. Uno’s has really good Chicago-style deep-dish. Honestly, Union Station is a good time anyway. Union Station puts the New York train stations to shame. Penn Station might as well be a bomb shelter. And then Grand Central Station is nice, but it’s also not very open or inviting. But you could meet people at Union Station and have lunch. I’m a big fan.

Reese Waters co-hosts a TV show that airs every weekday at 6 a.m. on WUSA9, but don’t assume that means he wakes up early in the morning. Because the comedian still performs stand-up shows around the city at night, he operates on a reverse schedule, waking up at 7 or 8 p.m. and crashing around noon. “I was one of those kids that could never get any work done in the middle of a classroom — I needed to go off somewhere by myself,” says Waters, 37. So while most of D.C. is asleep, the Prince George’s County native and current U Street corridor resident is hard at work writing material for “Get Up DC!” The morning show, which debuted in January, finds Waters tackling Metro woes, local news and zany viral stories with sharp humor and serious clarity — when called for. Waters doesn’t care what time his dream day starts, but he knows he wants to stay up around the clock. I wanna stay awake for 24 hours. I want to get the maximum time of it being my dream day. I wanna go for a run around the National Mall. I enjoy that a lot. After my run, I like to have a cigar up on the
roof of my building, looking at the Washington Monument. It’s something I’ve just gotten accustomed to doing. I like Cactus Cantina. They have great seafood enchiladas.
I’d go to the Southwest Waterfront and probably have moments of silence for Zanzibar and Hogate’s and all the other stuff that used to be over there, and I’ll make peace with The Wharf. Maybe I would fit in a Nationals game. They’re only a little over 10 years old, and I feel like the Nationals have done a really good job of integrating themselves in the city. Let’s put it this way: The Nationals have been good for a much larger percentage of their lifetimes than any of the other [D.C.] teams. I might go to MGM National Harbor. That’s where I’d stay. I would go enjoy myself at the luxurious hotel: I’d get a massage; they have a big, nice all-you-can-eat buffet and a lot of good food over there. It has a really beautiful view of the city, as well. And also, I’m supporting my good old PG County, so I’d feel good about that. Maybe I’ll go listen to Malik [Stewart] the drummer, or one of the other guys that play drums down by Gallery Place or by U Street. That’s a good, adult thing to do. (AS TOLD TO LORI McCUE)

For furniture hunters, “shop local” doesn’t mean figuring out whether the Ikea in College Park is closer than the one in Woodbridge. D.C. is home to dozens of unique shops that range from quirky vintage to sleekly upscale; some offer personalized design services, and many will deliver already assembled pieces to your living room. “Shopping local allows you to find really unique items that aren’t mass-produced,” D.C.-based interior designer Danielle A. Gray says. “You can walk into a local antique store and purchase a vintage lamp that ends up being a gorgeous conversation piece.” If you’re new in town — or you just want an excuse to send your couch to the curb — here’s a look at some local options. Prices vary at each business based on the piece and factors such as customization. ANGELA HAUPT (FOR EXPRESS)
Walking into this cozy shop is like falling down a bohemian Alice-inWonderland hole: Globes, vintage cigar boxes and knickknacks are crammed in every corner and piled atop every farmhouse table. And the collection is always shifting, co-owner Anna Kahoe says. She and her husband, Dan, bring in 60 to 100 pieces of vintage and antique furniture each week; stop by on a Thursday or Friday afternoon to see what’s new. “We move the entire store around to accommodate the truck full of inventory, so you get to see new living rooms or dining rooms, and that will help you figure out what you like and how to make artful, unique rooms,” Kahoe says. Plan on nabbing things like a set of velvet chairs or a 19th-century chest of drawers.

The urban design studio offers plenty of customization. “You can make something that’s exactly your style, both in comfort and look,” co-owner Lyric Turner says. Most pieces have a cash-and-carry option, which means you can take them home that day — unusual at most shops — and there are six interior designers on staff. If you choose to avail yourself of their wisdom, the initial consultation fee goes toward your first purchases. “Our goal is to help every person who comes in understand that working with a designer can be accessible and affordable,” Turner says. “A lot of people have it in their heads that designers are only for the rich and well-heeled, or for older people who have ‘arrived.’ Our aim is to completely dispel that myth.”

The D.C. area’s love of acronyms (welcome to the DMV) is just one of the things that newcomers to the area might find puzzling. To give you a leg up on your new home, we chatted with recent transplants — folks who are new enough that they remember what’s difficult, weird and surprising about moving to the area, but who’ve been here long enough to accumulate some insider intel. Here’s what they say you should know if you’re new to the region. SADIE DINGFELDER (EXPRESS)

D.C. looks like a big city but can feel like a small town
Affordable housing is elusive, even in the suburbs
Driving here is expensive and stressful
Alternative transportation options abound
Though the D.C. metro area is sprawling, the District’s population is roughly on par with that of El Paso, Texas. “The city’s so small, you run into people you know all the time,” says Mary Campbell, 24, a paralegal who lives in Petworth. As a result, people here tend to be friendly like you’d expect people to be in a smaller Southern town, but they have the hustle and ambition of big-city dwellers, says Loy Lee, 37, a comedian who recently moved here from L.A. “There’s an East Coast mentality and some Southern hospitality,” he says. “It’s a phenomenal mix.” The downside? “At least in my neighborhood [Brightwood], everything closes at, like, 9 p.m., and some restaurants and stores aren’t even open on the weekends,” he says.
“It’s nearly impossible to live alone on an entry-level salary,” says Nick Klauda, 25, a marketing strategist who lives in Columbia Heights. “You will probably live in a tiny place with other people,” he adds. Unfortunately, things don’t get much better if you choose to reside away from the city, says Kelly McDermott, 28, of Springfield, Va. “It’s still very overpopulated out here,” she says. “Our rent is absurd.” Your best chance for finding a decent apartment is through word of mouth, says Joanna Roberts, 34, who lives in a Shaw apartment that’s owned by friends of hers. “A lot of landlords in D.C. only rent out to people they know,” she says.
If you can avoid it, don’t bring your car to D.C., recent transplants say. Parking is nearly impossible in some parts of town, parking tickets add up quickly and your vehicle is a target for smash-and-grab thieves, says Chris Williams, 46, a photographer who lives on Capitol Hill. “If you need a car, use car2go or rent one for weekend trips,” he says. And if you’re planning on heading to major Northeast cities, it’s often cheaper to take a bus. “I didn’t realize how expensive it is to drive to New York,” Lee says. “The tolls alone are $60, and then it’s another $40 to $60 to park.” Parking is easier to find in the D.C. suburbs, McDermott says, but traffic and tolls make driving far from fun.
“You can bike, Metro, walk or Uber almost anywhere,” Williams says. City buses are another great option, Klauda adds. “I love riding through historic parts of the city and seeing how different parts of town connect,” he says. Metrorail has its issues, but it’s relatively reliable and easy to learn, Roberts says. “Sometimes you’re delayed, sometimes the train’s on fire, but it’s a pretty acceptable excuse for being late, since everyone’s been there,” she says. Download one of the many Metro monitoring apps out there to keep abreast of delays and when the next train or bus will arrive.

Welcome to D.C.
It might take you a while to get a good job
There are a lot of interesting, fulfilling jobs in D.C., but there are even more people who want them, Campbell says. “I didn’t realize how competitive it was going to be,” she says. Your graduate degree won’t necessarily help you stand out here, Roberts adds. “Anywhere else, you’d be a shining star, but everyone in D.C. has been to great schools and has stellar credentials,” she says. As a result, don’t take it personally if you’re overqualified for your first D.C. job. “Stay humble and do the grunt work,” Roberts says. “There is light at the end of the tunnel for people who work through the bulls---.”
DC Housing Expo & Home Show The weather is wildly unpredictable
It’s hard to get dressed in the morning, since D.C. can experience all four seasons in a single day, Lee says. His solution: layers. “I bring my entire wardrobe everywhere I go,” he says. Winters generally aren’t very bad here, but rumors of snow send everyone into a panic, McDermott adds. “If there’s snow in the forecast, everyone freaks out and they go into the stores and get bread and milk and water and batteries as if they are going to be bunkered down in their houses for a week,” she says.

“D.C. is a lot more conservative, clothes-wise, than other places I’ve lived,” says Campbell, who works at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. “Everyone is in black pants and collared shirts.” People who work on Capitol Hill tend to be dressier, but rumpled clothes are a badge of honor among staffers showing off all the long hours they’re putting in, Williams adds. If you see several women wearing the same exact Ann Taylor dress on your Metro train, just know that they are too busy saving the world to put together original outfits.

as the District boasts, it’s easy to find free or cheap beer, art, snacks, music and adventure. How easy? We decided to challenge ourselves to create a perfect D.C. afternoon/evening on less than $30. The ground rules: Each itinerary had to include food and drink, a cultural activity and a way to enjoy the outdoors. One-night-only events or specials were ruled out, as was sweet-talking your way into a deal. And to keep things interesting, we made Smithsonian museums (all free of charge) off-limits. Armed with our D.C. knowledge and paltry sums of cash, three of us set off in search of fun, food and free stuff. Kristen Page-Kirby A cocktail fan who loves a good walk A. Litteri 517-519 Morse St. NE
To fuel up, I started my afternoon at A. Litteri. The market looks like it’s been around for a hundred years, mostly because it probably took them that long to load in all the wine bottles. (It’s actually been at this location near Union Market since 1932.) The front of the shop is dedicated to specialty Italian foods, at the back there’s a deli counter, and all around the rest of the place is wine — which makes for a great way to kill time as you’re waiting for your sandwich or salad. I went for a 6-inch sub with turkey and capicola (big spenders can add specialty meats and toppings for 50 cents to 2 bucks more). I threw in a bottle of iced tea, grabbed a bench on the nearby Gallaudet campus and watched a highly competitive game of Ultimate Frisbee. Cost: $8.29
National Archives 700 Pennsylvania Ave. NW
Perhaps I was inspired by “National Treasure” when I decided
to get one of our nation’s founding documents as a souvenir at the National Archives, though I opted for the Constitution instead of the Declaration of Independence and I didn’t steal it. Heading right to the gift shop — because, as all kids know, the best part of any educational experience is buying something — I picked up an envelope containing a document that looked just like the one tourists were gawking at upstairs, only this one had to be folded a lot. When I paid, the cashier asked if I was interested in rounding up my purchase to donate to the National Archives Foundation. I said yes, and that’s how my $4.95 Constitution became $5. I felt quite generous doing this. Cost: $5
Congressional Cemetery 1801 E St. SE
I had never been to Congressional Cemetery, though I am fond of judging what people put on their tombstones. The walk would have been a bit long, so I Metro’d from the Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter station to Potomac Avenue (cost: $2.25)
and then had a three-block walk to the gates. Membership-holding dogs are allowed off-leash inside the cemetery, and there were many friendly pups frolicking around the monuments. The winning gravestone belongs to John Frey and Peter Morris, whose joint monument looks like a picnic table, complete with two benches. The cemetery is free, but there is a box for donations. I dropped in $2; between this and my contribution at the Archives, I felt like quite the benefactor. Cost: $4.25 (with Metro fare)
EatBar 415 Eighth St. SE
It was another easy (and free!) stroll to EatBar, which has a solid lineup for its happy hour (4-7 p.m. weekdays) — and the most comfortable bar stools I’ve ever sat in. There are beer and wine specials, but I went for the spicy Dig for Fire, a cocktail made of vodka, habanero, ginger and citrus, for $4. EatBar was nicely dark and quiet this day, with a TV silently playing some show about yachts — yachts that belong to people who can definitely spend more than $30 in a day. Cost: $6 (including tax and tip)

Only after I thought about how grateful Future Lori will be did I opt to begin my afternoon with a workout. Instead of trudging into a gym, however, my yoga mat and I headed at 5:30 p.m. to Farragut Square, where, amid weary commuters on the surrounding streets, the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District offered a free yoga class. It’s part of the BID’s series of golden-hour fitness classes throughout the summer, featuring yoga on Tuesdays, barre on Wednesdays and Pilates on Thursdays. The best part is you only have to register online once to take advantage of the classes all season. Cost: $0

I spent the half-hour Metro

Good thing I was headed to DC Reynolds, home of — in my opinion — the best happy hour deal in the District. Go to the Park View bar between 5 and 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, choose your beer, wine or cocktail and receive a second one afterward for free. The only catch: You receive the same drink the second time — no switching it up. Good thing I love the Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout enough that I’d order a second one even if it weren’t free. Tourism DC offers 17 Heritage Trails: self-guided tours of D.C. historical sites. The tours, outlined on the Cultural Tourism DC website, are all over the city, with each site marked by signposts. I chose to take in the U Street east loop, mostly because I know shamefully little about the history of the buildings I pass on that street every day, and because it comes with an audio tour accessible on your smartphone, so you can walk the sites with guidance in your earbuds. Touring the eastern side of U Street takes you to such big sites as Ben’s Chili Bowl and The Lincoln Theatre, but also to the former home of Lillian Evans Tibbs, a D.C.-born opera singer who became famous around the world in the 1940s. Cost: $2 (for Metro fare)
The Hamilton 600 14th St. NW
From U Street, it’s not a far walk to The Hamilton, where I strolled right past the fancy dining tables up front, followed the hallway toward the kitchen and headed upstairs to The Loft, a cozy bar with a small space for free live music. There was plenty of room up front near the roots band playing, but I made a beeline for the bar: I came with the specific purpose of appeasing my latenight sushi craving. The Loft, in addition to offering sandwiches, bar snacks and entrees, serves up its enormous sushi rolls at half price from 3-6 p.m. and after 11 p.m. daily. Thanks to being thrifty all evening, I could afford to splurge on a yellowtail roll with jalapeno and a shrimp tempura roll. Cost: $15 (with tax and tip) Total spent: $28.45

After working up an appetite, I walked (downhill, thankfully) about three-quarters of a mile to get a late lunch/early dinner at my favorite cheap-eats spot in Georgetown. The bare-bones Falafel Inc. — the walls are mostly unfinished plywood; seating and tables are limited — sells falafel sandwiches and salads at ridiculously low prices (no item is more than $4). I opted for a $4 sandwich — a house-made pita stuffed with several small and lightly fried falafel balls, hummus ($1 upcharge), lettuce, cabbage, pali salad and the restaurant’s house tahini sauce and hot sauce. For $4 it’s a surprisingly filling meal that you can scarf down while walking, if needed. Plus, the restaurant says
After killing some time windowshopping on M Street NW (good luck finding something under $30), I grabbed a spot in the bar area of Pizzeria Paradiso overlooking the dining room for happy hour. Mondays through Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m. at the bar, this location of the local pizza chain offers $3 off each craft beer draft or glass of wine (appetizers and pizzas are also discounted). As I sipped on a tasty double IPA from Virginia’s Solace Brewing, I moved downstairs to the restaurant’s new game room (which has its own bar), where I was tempted to blow the rest of my budget on skee ball, classic arcade video games or the “Pirates of the Caribbean” pinball
A music nerd who loves craft beer Tudor Place 1644 31st St. NW
I started my afternoon with an uphill climb through Georgetown, from M Street NW to Tudor Place, a historic home and 51/2 -acre garden that’s a hidden urban oasis. The estate was purchased by Thomas Peter, a descendent of Martha Washington, in 1805 and has been preserved as a relic of the past. But I wasn’t there to view the house. For $3, you can take a self-guided tour of the lush garden surrounding the estate. First I stopped by the visitor center, where I browsed the quaint gift shop (full of tea, jam, honey, mugs and more) before paying the fee and picking up a map of the garden. I was struck by how calm I felt as I took it all in: the blooming flowers, the grand water features and the playful sculptures. I could have stopped and pondered the meaning of
machine. Next time, I told myself. Cost: $5.40 (with tax and tip)
Gypsy Sally’s 3401 K St. NW.
To finish the evening, I headed down to the waterfront for a quick stroll before making my way to Gypsy Sally’s — a live music venue underneath the Whitehurst Freeway. On most nights, the jam band- and Americanafriendly venue hosts free performances by singer-songwriters or bands in the tucked-away Vinyl Lounge. Records and Grateful Dead photos line the walls of the long, L-shaped space and there’s an Instagram-friendly VW bus to hang in. A tiny stage is tucked in one corner where, on this night, singer-songwriter Jeff Tucker was playing acoustic tunes to a handful of attendees. Gypsy Sally’s also hosts a weekly open-mic in that room on Tuesdays with drink discounts (including $3 PBRs). Who says you can’t have fun in Georgetown on the cheap? Cost: $0 Total spent: $12.80

No one knows much about the reticent Taylor except that he’s steadfast (and just regular fast). He’s made several trips down to the minors and back again, usually replacing injured players. The center fielder likes to score big: In 2015 he hit an inside-the-park grand slam (OK, technically he didn’t because the other team was charged with an error) and did it again — officially, this time — last year. He also hit a grand slam in Game 4 of 2017’s NLDS, preventing elimination. This season he’s finally a part of the regular lineup, which means we might find out something about him.

Our shortstop, Turner is often known as the biggest supporter of teammate Anthony Rendon, whom he often refers to as “my favorite player.” This resonates with you, as you prize Turner’s supportive nature. He’s also pretty good at shaking it off: Last year he was hit in the wrist by a fastball from Cubs pitcher Pedro Strop but continued playing for an inning and a half. He’s fast, he’s cheerful, and did we mention he once played an inning and a half of baseball with a broken wrist?

CAMPING
You probably work hard, stay focused and you also might be a little scary. A three-time Cy Young Award winner, Scherzer is known for staring batters down. Those intimidating eyes — his right is blue and his left is brown — pierce the hearts of men and have been showcased in many ways, including on the right field wall and on a bobblehead. He’s not all icy intimidation, though: Last year, he and his wife covered all adoption fees for four days so that the Humane Rescue Alliance could make room for animals displaced by Hurricane Harvey.

As someone who prizes loyalty, Zimmerman is a logical choice for you. A long-timer — he’s been with the Nats for 13 years, his entire pro career — Zimm used to play third base but now holds down the fort at first. His résumé includes the first walk-off home run in Nationals Park (against the Braves, whom we hate) and he holds the franchise records for the most doubles, the most home runs, the most RBIs and the longest homer ever at Nats Park. If someone were to write a hip-hop musical about No. 11, the signature line would be “Zimmerman: He gets the job done.”

“It feels so basic to be on Cardi B’s side, but I can’t deny that’s what I’ve been listening to,” Zauner says of the take-no-prisoners rapper. “As someone who’s been a very blunt loudmouth, I’m very happy that she is where she is.”
2
‘Spells’
Jenny Hval
Zauner fell in love with Hval’s 2016 album “Blood Bitch” and again with the Norwegian singer’s dreamy new track. “She’s simultaneously really cerebral but also rooted in pop music — just really nice, good-sounding pop music,” Zauner says.
3
‘Trust Me Baby’ Empress Of
Empress Of’s Lorely Rodriguez “is one of my first friends that I was a huge fan of before I met her,” Zauner says. “Lorely is a phenomenal producer, and has such a beautiful voice,” which she puts to use on this “really amazing bilingual track.”

2017’s “The Emoji Movie” took home the Razzie award for worst movie of the year, which is impressive because 2017 also brought us “Fifty Shades Darker” . One hopes you didn’t spend good on it, because now you can see it for free. Thanks to the Georgetown Library’s Monthly Movie Roast series, not only can you see it, but you can discuss it and make fun of it. The film starts at 6 p.m. and is mercifully short — you should be out of there with plenty of time left in the day to clear your mind with . Georgetown

“50th Anniversary!”
Can you remember your SAT scores? (640 math, 710 verbal; this was before the essay portion and score recentering.) Did they have any effect on your life? Do you remember what “adumbrate” means? For many people, the answer to these questions is “no.” The documentary “The Test & the Art of Thinking” examines how the SAT and the ACT are a) problematic, b) pointless, c) ineffective and d) all of the above. (Also, “adumbrate” means to outline partially, but you won’t remember that.) Landmark E Street Cinema,
Everyone who’s seen 1986’s “An American Tail,” the animated story of young mouse Fievel Mousekewitz and his family fleeing Russia for the U.S., remembers the sappy hit song “Somewhere Out There.” And everyone who’s seen it should agree that the peppy “There Are No Cats in America” is far better. (“The streets are paved with cheese!” is a memorable line.) When Fievel gets separated from his family, he struggles to reunite with them. Good thing immigrant children getting separated from their parents only happens in cartoons. Suns

Willie Nelson & Sturgill Simpson The Anthem, 901 Wharf St. SW; Sun., 7:30 p.m., $95-$175.
Directed by Marc Bruni Choreography by Denis Jones Music Direction by Todd Ellison
Willie Nelson is an original outlaw country artist, so it’s no surprise he’d find a kinship with Sturgill Simpson, who pushes against the rules of the genre. Nelson, 85, is touring behind his 67th (!) album, “Last Man Standing,” which finds him looking at the afterlife, a mood brought on in the wake of Merle Haggard’s death. Simpson is still supporting his conceptual, horn-aided 2016 album, “A Sailor’s Guide to Earth.” Rounding out the bill is Baltimore roots rocker Cris Jacobs.

“You Make It Easy,” the lead single off Jason Aldean’s most recent album, is a slow-dance country ballad and his latest chart-topper. Its title also sums up Aldean’s decade-plus career, with April’s “Rearview Town” clocking in as his fourth consecutive No. 1 album. Like the records before it, this new one jumps between radio-ready love songs and red-cup party anthems where Aldean can “put a Friday night hurt on a bottle of fifth.”
Betsy Wolfe
Follow the rise of J. Pierrepont Finch as he climbs the corporate ladder from lowly window washer to highpowered executive. With a full cast and onstage orchestra, this semi-staged concert features the brightest stars direct from Broadway.

Missed yesterday’s paper?
New York-based comedian Matteo Lane spent time living in Italy as an oil painter and opera singer before returning stateside to kick off his career in stand-up. How’s that for
an unlikely résumé? A co-creator and co-star of the IFC digital series “Janice and Jeffrey,” Lane also hosts the Snapchat series “Ghost Hunt” — which tracks down people who vanished from a relationship, not things that go bump in the night — and has performed his stand-up on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” The Big Hunt, 1345 Connecticut Ave. NW; Fri. & Sat., 8 & 9:45 p.m., $20. MUSIC
Robert Finley
Blind bluesman Robert Finley is no stranger to D.C.: In March, he stole the show singing a few of his songs with Dan Auerbach’s band at 9:30 Club, and just last week he opened a show with his band at The Anthem. Now, he’s headlining his own gig in the District. Finley, 65, restarted his music career in recent years and was buoyed by an assist from Auerbach, whose production on last year’s “Goin’ Platinum!” helped put the soulful singer on people’s radar. Onstage, Finley is an impressive, charismatic performer, able to captivate crowds both big and small with ease. Rock and Roll Hotel, 1353 H St. NE; Fri., 8 p.m., $18-$20.
Sat. MUSIC
‘Hamiltunes: An American Sing-Along’ Sing songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit musical “Hamilton” along with singers from the Mount Vernon Community Children’s Theatre at the estate of George Washington. You have to imagine there will be a rousing rendition of “Right Hand Man.” Mount Vernon, 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Hwy., Mount Vernon, Va.; Sat., noon-2 p.m., $20. STAGE
‘Live From Here’
Shortly after mandolin wizard Chris Thile took over the public radio staple “A Prairie Home Companion,” the show rebranded as “Live From Here.” Every show, broadcast live, is different based on the guests. At Wolf Trap, performers include country singer Kacey Musgraves, comedian Sheng Wang and multiinstrumentalist Sarah Jarosz. Wolf Trap, Filene Center, 1551 Trap Road, Vienna; Sat., 5:45 p.m., $30-$65.

‘Botticelli in the Fire’
There’s a scandalous backstory to painter Sandro Botticelli’s masterpiece “The Birth of Venus” — at least, as told by Canadian playwright Jordan Tannahill in his new work, “Botticelli in the Fire.” In the play, Botticelli is having an affair with his model, who happens to be the wife of his patron. Burna Boy
With the sounds of Caribbean dancehall and Nigerian Afrobeat surging across the planet, it’s a good time to be Burna Boy. The Nigerian vocalist has been
whipping up a euphoric blend of those warm-weather genres, sprinkling them with hip-hop and R&B and baking them into a sound that he has deemed “Afro-fusion” and sounds like a genre that’s all his own. Howard Theatre, 620 T St. NW; Wed., 8 p.m., $20-$25. EXHIBITS

Treehouse!: South Carolina trio Treehouse! makes the kind of reggae music that sounds perfect on a summer day: laid-back, loose and exploratory. That makes the band an apt fit for the holiday weekend that kicks off summer. For a taste, check out the trio’s “Welcome to the World of Treehouse!,” a live album that dropped last year. On Friday, the band will headline Gypsy Sally’s with support from The Late Risers.

Roth spurned literary norms The author cemented a divisive legacy with ‘Portnoy’s Complaint’
Louis-Dreyfus to receive 2018 Twain Prize
RICHARD DREW (AP)
1933-2018 The audience kept hammering the writer. In their eyes, here was a traitor. It was March 1962, and Philip Roth was sitting on a panel at Yeshiva University. Only 29, the Jewish writer had pocketed accolades and awards with his first book, 1959’s “Goodbye, Columbus.” But to the students and professors at the Jewish college in New York City, the book’s portrayals of American-born Jews shaking free of their old-world culture while navigating the sexual and culture tripwires of the 1950s were far too real and unflattering — a disgrace even. Over dinner with friends that night, Roth reflected on the bruising experience. “I’ll never write about Jews again,” he vowed. Roth — who died Tuesday night at 85 in Manhattan — broke that promise seven years later with a novel that forever changed the American literary scene. Published in 1969, “Portnoy’s Complaint” was a provocative hand grenade rolled right into the literary and Jewish establishments. A hyperactive comic monologue delivered by the titular character to his psychoanalyst, the book’s pages ramble between obscene scenes of masturbation and erotic longing, Jewish guilt and family infighting.
Philip Roth, who died Tuesday at 85, rose to prominence with his controversial 1969 novel “Portnoy’s Complaint.”
The reaction to “Goodbye, Columbus” led him to step carefully on 1962’s “Letting Go” and 1967’s “When She Was Good.” But he dumped literary conventions with “Portnoy’s Complaint.” “I let it rip,” Roth told Esquire in 2010. “I had written three books prior that were all careful in a way.” The vulgar scenes and comedy were a way for Roth to drill down into a deeper condition: the frustration that comes from being penned in on all sides by various forms of shame. The scandalous content of the book drove up its sales — “Portnoy’s Complaint” sold over 400,000 copies in its first year of printing. Critics were also largely supportive of the taboo-blasting
An iconic life’s work Philip Roth published 27 novels, two memoirs and several more story collections by the time he stopped writing in 2012. In later years, his focus shifted to the nation and its discontents in what became known as his “American Trilogy”: “American Pastoral” (1997), “I Married a Communist” (1998) and “The Human Stain” (2000). (TWP)
work. In The New York Times, Josh Greenfeld called it “the very novel that every AmericanJewish writer has been trying to write in one guise or another since the end of World War II.” Yet negative reactions also exploded, particularly regarding
the book’s depiction of a sexcrazy Jewish man consumed by mother issues. “This is the book for which all anti-Semites have been praying,” Kabbalah scholar Gershom Scholem wrote. Either way, “Portnoy’s Complaint” cemented Roth’s place at the highest rung of American culture. Speaking to Esquire, Roth related a story of sitting backstage at Madison Square Garden after “Portnoy’s Complaint” was released. Having watched blues icon B.B. King give an interview, Roth got up to leave. “B.B. King looked at his boys in their powder-blue suits, rubbed my seat, and said, ‘This guy just made a million dollars from writin’ a book,’ ” Roth said. KYLE SWENSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

COMEDY Julia Louis-Dreyfus is one of the most decorated actors in television history. She has won 11 Emmys, as well as a Peabody Award, Golden Globe and nine Screen Actors Guild awards. On Oct. 21, she will add the most prestigious award in comedy to her collection: the Kennedy Center’s 2018 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. “Like Mark Twain, Julia has enriched American culture with her iconic, unforgettable, and outright hilarious brand of humor,” said Deborah F. Rutter, president of the Kennedy Center, in the announcement Wednesday morning. Louis-Dreyfus, 57, became a household name in the 1990s playing the self-absorbed Elaine Benes on “Seinfeld.” After the series concluded in 1998, Louis-Dreyfus played the titular role in the acclaimed “The New Adventures of Old Christine” from 2006 to 2010. Two years later, LouisDreyfus took on what is widely considered her strongest role: the rather inept Vice President Selina Meyer on HBO’s “Veep.” The actress said in a statement: “Merely to join the list of distinguished recipients of this award would be honor enough, but, as a student of both American history and literature, the fact that Mr. Twain himself will be presenting the award to me in person is particularly gratifying.” SONIA RAO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TODAY: High pressure dominates with mostly sunny skies, light winds and low humidity. This could be a 10-out-of-10 contender with afternoon highs into the low to mid-80s. Another evening to savor as we cool off into the 70s again. Skies continue mostly clear through the night, with comfortable lows in the 60s.
