A Far East way with words PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY When Bob Huh’s students started the school year, most knew little Korean. But as the year winds down, Maerielle Batugo and others have learned the alphabet, memorized vocabulary words, formed sentences, read passages in books and performed skits. With this, they are marking a first in Maryland. Their school — Eleanor Roosevelt High, in Greenbelt — has become the state’s first public school to offer courses in Korean, and their class is leading the way. The lessons have been challenging at times, but after nine months, students are gaining a foothold. “I’m going to continue it next year and am going to definitely improve,” said Maerielle, 15, a ninth-grader at the Prince George’s County school. She was inspired to take the course by her affection for South Korean pop music — K-pop — and televised dramas, called K-dramas. “It made me want to learn the language,” she said last week. Her enthusiasm comes amid

signs that foreign-language learning is on the rise in Prince George’s and beyond. Enrollment in foreign-language programs is up in Maryland’s elementary and middle schools, state officials say. They also note that for the first time Maryland will this year award the “seal of biliteracy” to students graduating with high levels of language proficiency. Two dozen other states and the District have also adopted such initiatives.

“They are not only learning from me. They are also really into Korean culture.” BOB HUH, the Korean language teacher at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Md. The idea for Korean classes took shape after Huh arrived at Roosevelt High in 2014 and noted the popularity of Japanese.

In Prince George’s, with 132,000 students, school officials say 37,000, or 28 percent, are receiving foreign-language instruction. That’s up from about 35,000 last school year, said Maria Flores, supervisor of world languages in Prince George’s. “Every year, our numbers are growing,” she said. The county’s embrace of Korean comes four years after it became the first public school system in Maryland to offer Portuguese, Flores said. Veronica Simpson, 16, says she only wishes Korean class had come sooner. Now a junior, she took Italian in ninth and 10th grades. She likes Korean so much that she will take Korean 2 next year and hopes to attend a college with Korean courses. “English is my first language,” she said, “and now, even though I don’t know it fully, I kind of see Korean as my second language.” She said she thinks her Korean will help as she applies to colleges in coming months. “Korean, it kind of stands out,” she said. She also hopes to travel to South Korea. “It’s the place I want to go the most, and the place I want to stay the longest.” DONNA ST. GEORGE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Trump budget spells pain for D.C. region

MARYLAND

Rep. Cummings has heart valve procedure

FREDERICKSBURG, VA. PABLO MARTINEZ MONSIVAIS (AP)

REGION President Trump’s full budget plan, issued Tuesday, is even worse for the Washington region than the initial “skinny” version released in March, local government officials and analysts say. The new one includes all the same ominous proposals that prompted warnings that the spending plan would worsen economic inequality and possibly tip the area into recession. The White House still wants to shrink the local federal workforce by thousands of jobs and slash spending for affordable housing, job training, environmental protection and the National Institutes of Health. But the president has gone further by urging historic cuts in entitlement programs including Medicaid, which provides health care for the poor, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps. If enacted, those reductions and others would tear large holes in the social safety net, and overwhelm state and local governments with new spending burdens. “Clearly, it is going to be devastating for us,” Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III, D, said. “We can’t make up for the cuts that would

be made to the social programs. The county doesn’t have the resources to do it, and the state’s not going to make up the difference.” The plan drew a cold response overall, even from top Republicans. Rep. Barbara Comstock, R-Va., faulted it for being unfair to federal workers and for failing to support “science research, disease prevention, combating the opioid epidemic, Chesapeake Bay cleanup and more.” A spokeswoman for Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, R, also was negative, saying the governor “is on the record opposing many of these proposed cuts,” including to the Chesapeake Bay cleanup, Medicaid and NIH. Like Republicans in other states, Hogan spokeswoman

Amelia Chasse also suggested that nobody should get too upset about the plan because Congress probably will drastically revise it. But Democrats and others warned against complacency. They noted that many of Trump’s proposals are similar to measures that Republicans who control Congress have advocated in the past. Even if the GOP scales back some of the proposals, they said, the damage to the Washington region would be significant. “The Republicans can now use this as a baseline,” Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, D-Va., said. “They can say, ‘He [Trump] zeroed it out, and we restored half of it’ — but that means half the disabled population it was serving will no longer be served.” ROBERT McCARTNEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The 40-pound swarm was carefully snipped from a tree branch last week in Fredericksburg by Nathan Thompson and his father, Earl. The two belong to a family of beekeepers spanning generations. A county animal control officer, Anthony McCall, responded to the outsized swarm. But a sheriff’s office statement described McCall as a self-admitted “chicken” regarding bees. So he summoned Nathan Thompson for help. Now they hope the bees can be loaned out to help pollinate crops. (AP/TWP)

Workers face discipline after Metro ‘near miss’ Administration demanded answers from Metro officials on how they intended to improve protections for track workers at risk of being struck by passing trains. Because of the May 18 “near miss” — along with another incident Wednesday in which a train operator broke the speed limit in a work zone — federal officials remain concerned that significant risks remain on Metro’s tracks. Carol Carmody, a federally appointed member of the Metro board who chairs its safety committee, said she spoke with FTA officials about the two incidents.

She said officials had been satisfied with Metro’s written response on how they planned to address roadway worker protection — until last week’s incident. “They were ready to say, ‘Yes, we accept this plan.’ But then May 18 occurred. And then they thought, ‘Well, we’re not going to write and say everything is fine when this has occurred,’ ” Carmody said. “I think they see [Metro’s] response as excellent, but how do you account for this continuing problem? It’s a dilemma for all of us.”

U.S. intel leaks ‘troubling’ In response to outrage in Britain, Trump asks for U.S. to investigate bombing-probe leaks

Trump demands NATO nations pay fair share

PETER BYRNE (GETTY IMAGES)

NATIONAL SECURITY President Trump on Thursday denounced U.S. leaks about Britain’s investigation of the Manchester terrorist bombing and asked the U.S. Justice Department and other agencies to launch a full investigation. In a statement issued amid meetings in Brussels with leaders of NATO member nations, Trump responded to British outrage over the leaks by calling them “deeply troubling” and vowing to “get to the bottom of this.” He added: “The leaks of sensitive information pose a grave threat to our national security. I am asking the Department of Justice and other relevant agencies to launch a complete review of this matter, and if appropriate, the culprit should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. There is no relationship we cherish more than the Special Relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.” British indignation over the leaks of investigative material related to the Manchester bombing created a charged environment Thursday ahead of a meeting between Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May. May said Thursday morning that she would “make clear” to Trump during the NATO summit that “intelligence that is shared between our law enforcement agencies must remain secure.” Leaks from the ongoing investigation — including the publication of crime-scene photos in The New York Times and the naming of the suspected bomber by U.S. broadcasters — have provoked ire from British officials, who believe the U.S. was responsible

for the disclosures. In Washington, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement that he shares Trump’s “deep concern” and has talked to the British home secretary about the matter. “We have already initiated appropriate steps to address these rampant leaks that undermine our national security,” he said. British authorities have not said that the leaks hurt the case. But some commentators have suggested that publishing the name of the suspected bomber could have compromised the investigation. Withholding of the name for longer could have allowed authorities to track down people who may have since gone underground, they said. There is a marked difference in the relationship between the press and law enforcement and intelligence services in the U.S. and Britain. In the U.K., the culture is much more closed and

about the leak controversy and British intelligence sharing. In a photo opportunity ahead of a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump simply stared at his questioner and mouthed the words, “Thank you.” According to a British official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, British police investigating the Manchester attack have now decided to withhold information from the U.S. “Greater Manchester Police hopes to resume normal intelligence relationships — a two-way flow of information — soon but is currently furious,” the BBC reported. The growing frustration of British officials comes as allies are already smarting from Trump’s disclosure of classified information to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador about an Islamic State threat. K ARL A ADAM AND WILLIAM BR ANIGIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

BRUSSELS President Trump, speaking at a ceremony Thursday to dedicate a memorial to NATO’s resolve in the wake of the 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, publicly chastised his fellow alliance leaders for not being “fair” to U.S. taxpayers. Trump used his maiden summit with NATO leaders in Brussels to remind the alliance that “23 of the 28 member nations are still not paying what they should be paying,” and that they owe “massive amounts” from past years. European leaders who gathered from across the alliance gazed at Trump without expression and offered modest applause at the end of a speech that he began by asking for a moment of silence in remembrance of the victims of Monday’s terrorist attack in Manchester, England, that killed 22 and wounded many more. Addressing British Prime Minister Theresa May, Trump said, “May all the nations here grieve with you and stand with you.” The attack, he said, “demonstrates the depths of the evil we face with terrorism.” Trump’s speech was likely to disappoint leaders who had hoped for a public commitment from Trump to NATO’s security guarantees, which he called into question during his presidential campaign last year when he said he would check a country’s defense spending before coming to its aid. Kushner under FBI scrutiny POLITICS Investigators are focusing on a series of meetings held by Jared Kushner, President Trump’s sonin-law and an influential White House adviser, as part of their probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and related matters, according to people familiar with the investigation. Kushner, who held meetings in December with the Russian ambassador and a banker from Moscow, is being investigated because of the extent and nature of his interactions with the Russians, the people said. The Washington Post reported last week that a senior White House official close to the president was a significant focus of the high-stakes investigation, though it did not name Kushner. FBI agents also remain keenly interested in former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, but Kushner is the only current White House official known to be considered a key person in the probe. The Post has not been told that Kushner is the central focus of the investigation, and he has not been accused of any wrongdoing. “Mr. Kushner previously volunteered to share with Congress what he knows about these meetings. He will do the same if he

is contacted in connection with any other inquiry,” said Jamie Gorelick, one of his attorneys. In addition to possible coordination between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign to influence the 2016 presidential election, investigators are looking broadly into possible financial crimes — but the people familiar with the matter, who were not authorized to speak publicly, did not specify who or what was being examined. A Justice Department spokeswoman said, “I can’t confirm or deny the existence or nonexistence of investigations or subjects of investigations.” The FBI declined to comment. At the time of the December meetings, Trump already had won the election. Contacts between people on the transition team and foreign governments can be routine, but the meetings and phone calls with the Russians were not made public at the time. In early December, Kushner met in New York with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak, and later sent a deputy to meet with Kislyak again. Flynn was also present at the early December meeting, and later that month, Flynn held a call with Kislyak to discuss U.S.-imposed sanctions against Russia. Flynn initially mischaracterized the conversation even to Vice President Pence, which ultimately prompted Flynn’s ouster from the White House. Kushner also met in December with Sergey Gorkov, the head of Vnesheconombank, which has

President Trump is in Brussels at the same time as his predecessor Barack Obama is in Berlin. Their trips offer contrasting views of the U.S. relationship with Europe. Obama was warmly greeted in the German capital Thursday, appearing alongside Chancellor Angela Merkel at a churchorganized festival. Obama’s high standing in Germany is largely shared across the continent. A poll by the Pew Research Center last summer found that 77 percent of Europeans had confidence in him. The poll also asked Europeans what they thought about Trump, at that time just a candidate. Just 9 percent said they had confidence in him. Trump has walked back some of his harsh campaigntrail criticism of Europe since becoming president. In Brussels on Thursday, Trump met with EU officials and later attended a working dinner with world leaders regarding NATO. He next heads to Sicily for a Group of Seven meeting of the world’s top industrialized nations. His time in Europe is important. “European leaders and publics are still sizing him up,” said Charles Kupchan, a professor of international affairs at Georgetown University. “Opinions will firm up over the course of the next 48 hours.”

It is unclear whether Kushner and Kislyak interacted there. The New York Times reported that Kushner omitted from security clearance forms his December meetings with Kislyak and Gorkov, though his lawyer said that was an error and he told the FBI soon after that he would amend the forms. The White House said that his meetings were inconsequential. MATT

nation+world Justice Department vows to take the fight to the Supreme Court COURTS A federal appeals court on Thursday left in place the freeze on President Trump’s revised entry ban, handing the administration another legal setback in its efforts to block the issuance of new visas to citizens of six Muslimmajority countries. Trump’s administration vowed to take the fight to the U.S. Supreme Court. The ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit means the Trump administration

still cannot enforce its travel order. In a 10-to-3 decision, the Richmond-based court said the president’s broad immigration power to deny entry into the U.S. is not absolute and sided with challengers, finding that the travel ban “in context drips with religious intolerance, animus and discrimination.” The president’s authority, the court said, “cannot go unchecked when, as here, the president wields it through an executive edict that stands to cause irreparable harm to individuals across this nation,” according to the majority opinion written by Chief Judge Roger L. Gregory.

Cannabis drug helps some kids with epilepsy HEALTH A medicine made from marijuana reduced seizures in kids with a severe form of epilepsy in a study that strengthens the case for more research into pot’s possible health benefits. “This is the first solid, rigorously obtained scientific data” that a marijuana compound is safe and effective for this problem, said one study leader, Dr. Orrin Devinsky of NYU Langone Medical Center. The study was published Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine. In the study, one group got the drug and another got a dummy version; neither patients, parents nor doctors knew who took what until the study ended. It tested a liquid form of cannabidiol called Epidiolex. It doesn’t contain THC, the hallucinogenic ingredient, and is not sold anywhere yet, although its maker, GW Pharmaceuticals of London, is seeking U.S. approval. The patients, 120 children and teens ages 2 to 18 in the U.S. and Europe, have Dravet syndrome, a type of epilepsy that causes frequent seizures. nation+world Pentagon probe finds American bomb set off ISIS-planted explosives MOSUL, IRAQ The United States acknowledged Thursday that bombing an Iraqi building in March set off a series of Islamic State-planted explosives, resulting in more than 100 civilian deaths and underscoring the difficulty of rooting out the extremist group’s fighters from its remaining urban strongholds. The bomb dropped on a building in the city of Mosul set off explosive materials that ISIS militants had strategically placed inside, causing the concrete structure to collapse, the Pentagon said in describing the

conclusion of a two-month probe. The civilians inside were seeking refuge. The bombing led to the largest single incident of civilian deaths in the nearly 3-year-old campaign. And it illustrates the difficult fight U.S. and coalition forces are encountering, including what U.S. officials describe as ISIS militants deliberately drawing attacks on buildings where they’ve staged explosives and know civilians are inside. The civilians either enter unwittingly or are forced in and locked up. The conclusion, said U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Matthew Isler, is that while the U.S.-led coalition takes responsibility for the airstrike, “a coalition munition was not responsible for the structural

prompting Iraqi and coalition forces to adjust combat tactics and watch locations more carefully in advance of strikes. In a briefing with Pentagon reporters, Isler said the 500-pound precision-guided bomb dropped by a U.S. aircraft on March 17 was intended to kill two ISIS snipers who posed a threat to Iraqi counterterrorism forces. Isler said neither the Iraqi troops nor the Americans who authorized and conducted the airstrike knew civilians were in the building, or that explosive materials were present. He said 101 civilians in the building were killed, and another four died in a nearby building. He said 36 civilians remain unaccounted for.

There’s hope for America’s ailing honeybees. MARAWI CITY, PHILIPPINES | Soldiers take positions Thursday while evading sniper fire as they try to clear Islamic State-linked extremists from a city under siege since Tuesday. Army tanks rolled into the city Thursday as gunfire and explosions rang out, after the militants torched buildings, seized more than a dozen Catholics hostage and raised the flag of ISIS. Thousands fled the city Thursday, jamming their belongings into cars. At least 44 people have been killed in the fighting, including 31 militants and 11 soldiers, officials said.

Kirk Cousins and Bruce Allen agree that July 15 is the current key date for contract talks.

THREE POINTERS

Seeking new targets

RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU

The waiting game: Cousins strategy risky for Redskins offseason. … It is just a matter of trying to move forward and we will see what happens come July 15. It will be a telling date as it was last summer.” After playing under the franchise tag last season for $20 million, Cousins will earn $24 million this fall under that tag again if he doesn’t get an extension. It’s a hefty price for the club and a hefty risk for Cousins, whose long-term income would be jeopardized if he suffered a significant injury. But the risk lies more with the Redskins. If unsigned, Cousins could walk away a free agent a year from now having made $44 million in two seasons. The Redskins started 24 quarterbacks from 1992 through 2015, when Cousins got the job. To lose a starter who set team records for passing yardage each of the past two seasons over a few million dollars would be mind-boggling. Allen acts as though franchising Cousins for a third time in 2018 — at a salary cap-busting $34 million, based

(THE WASHINGTON POST)

3 JOHN McDONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Kirk Cousins is more concerned with chemistry than finance nowadays. He is spending spring practices at Redskins Park adjusting to new receivers. When Terrelle Pryor Sr. and Brian Quick go deep, Cousins is showing more arm strength than in the past. And when rookie back Samaje Perine heads for the handoff, Cousins tucks it perfectly into his midsection. Talk of Cousins’ potential mega-contract extension seems distant. Both he and team president Bruce Allen agree that if it gets done, it won’t be until the July 15 NFL deadline for franchised players to sign a multiseason deal rather than play on a current, one-year contract. “Deadlines do deals,” Cousins said after practice Wednesday. “I’m not in a hurry. They’re not in a hurry. I have had really positive conversations with everybody involved throughout the process this

With Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson gone, the Redskins’ Kirk Cousins will need new targets. Here are three wideouts who could complement third-year man Jamison Crowder.

on the collective bargaining agreement — would be no big deal. But it’s actually a horrendous option. It would transfer much of the club’s free agency money to one player and prevent upgrades elsewhere. Meanwhile, Cousins will monitor the contract talks of Detroit’s Matthew Stafford and Oakland’s Derek Carr, whose deals could help set Washington’s offer. Stafford and Carr are in the final year of their contracts and are seeking an average of $25 million annually starting in 2018. Most likely, their deals would only increase Cousins’ offer. The Redskins are playing a shortsighted waiting game,

not yet convinced that Cousins can lead them deep into the postseason. After all, Washington lost its 2015 playoff opener to Green Bay, and missed the playoffs last year when Cousins played poorly in a seasonending loss to the Giants. But that angle has the Redskins betting against themselves by figuring that a poor season would drop Cousins’ price. For now, he is letting his agent and Allen continue sporadic talks. After all, the real fireworks won’t begin until after the Fourth of July.

Josh Doctson As a rookie last year, he played just two games (with two catches) before going on injured reserve with Achilles ailments. But he looked very fast at practice Wednesday.

2 Brian Quick Quick, 27, signed in March after five seasons with the Rams. He has height (6-3) and raised his production last season with 41 catches for 564 yards and three TDs.

1 Terrelle Pryor Sr. The ex-QB had 1,007 yards receiving in 2016 despite working with six Browns passers. At 6-4, his catch radius far surpasses what Jackson and Garcon offered.

A bid to let states legalize sports betting

Rep. Frank Pallone, D-N.J., released a draft of a bill Thursday that would allow states to legalize sports betting. The Gaming Accountability and Modernization Enhancement Act, or GAME Act, would repeal the 1992 federal law mostly confining sports betting to Nevada and let other states add sports gambling and online gaming, provided taxing and regulations are put in place. Nats quietly name new closer Baker lets Koda Glover ease into the role after Treinen, Kelley stumble WASHINGTONPOST.COM D.C. SPORTS BOG

Father and son enjoy unusual doubleheader JONATHAN NEWTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

NATIONALS Koda Glover is the Nationals’ closer. It was obvious last weekend in Atlanta, but manager Dusty Baker didn’t feel the need to explicitly communicate the development to the confident, 24-year-old right-hander. Once in a while, Baker said, a little mystery is necessary, so a player doesn’t get too comfortable. The evidence, in any case, is on the field. “He’s going in in the ninth,” Baker said this week. “That’s a pretty good sign.” Glover is officially the Nationals’ third closer of 2017. Blake Treinen was the first. He officially lost the job April 19, when he had a 7.11 ERA eight outings into his season. The responsibility was then shifted to Shawn Kelley and Glover, but Kelley was first on the depth chart. He was the closer when he was available. Glover was the closer when he wasn’t. But Kelley blew two of his first five save opportunities, and his ERA currently is 5.93. Now it’s Glover’s job alone. Baker never announced the change, but it seemed to have taken place last week, because Kelley pitched the seventh inning in last Friday’s loss to the Braves.

Dusty Baker says Koda Glover, the club’s third closer this season, throws strikes and has poise.

That was the earliest Kelley has entered a game this season. After the game, Baker said he was saving Glover for a save situation. Glover then was entrusted for a four-out save Sunday. And Wednesday, he entered in the ninth inning against the Mariners, although it was not a save situation because the Nationals had a 5-1 lead. Glover responded by retiring the side in order, displaying a wicked 94-mph slider to complement his 97-mph fastball. His perfect inning lowered his ERA to 2.57 in 14 innings. It was a drama-free relief outing. The Nationals could use more of those — as opposed to what happened Thursday, when

Mariners 4, Nationals 2 Seattle’s Nelson Cruz greeted Washington reliever Jacob Turner with a go-ahead, three-run homer in the sixth inning Thursday at Nationals Park, and the Mariners went on to end a five-game losing streak. Gio Gonzalez took a 2-0 lead into the sixth but was removed after giving up two singles in the inning.

Baker off a few days Manager Dusty Baker will miss the weekend home series against San Diego to attend his son Darren’s high school graduation in Carmichael, Calif. Baker will rejoin Washington when it begins a three-game series in San Francisco on Monday, near Baker’s offseason home. Bench coach Chris Speier will fill in for Baker. (AP)

reliever Jacob Turner gave up a three-run home run in the sixth inning against Seattle and took the loss. Baker said Glover, who appeared in 19 games as a rookie last season but had no saves and an ERA of 5.03, has lobbied to be the No. 1 option in the ninth inning. “We wanted to break him in slowly because this guy’s, shoot, he’s only a year and a half out of college,” Baker said of the Oklahoma State product. “So he had said that’s the job he wanted and so it’s his now. “He’s very calm. He throws strikes, quality strikes and he has a pretty good idea of what he’s doing for a young pitcher.” JORGE CASTILLO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Wednesday provided a rare opportunity for area baseball fans, and at least one father and son took advantage of it. Kevin Cuddihy and his dad, Joe, were at Camden Yards for the Orioles’ 4-3 loss to the Twins in a game that began at 12:35 p.m. Afterward, they drove 40 miles to Nationals Park and saw a 5-1 win over the Mariners. “It’s something I’ve kind of been looking at doing for five or six years,” Kevin, 44, said of the two-city doubleheader. When Major League Baseball announced game times for the 2017 season in January, Kevin created an Excel spreadsheet with the schedules for the Nationals and Orioles. The teams had home games on the same day seven times, but Wednesday was the only day when their start times were far enough apart to make seeing games in Baltimore and Washington possible. It’s a rarity because MLB doesn’t like to have two home games in the same market in the same day. Like the Nationals and Orioles, the Cubs and White Sox, Dodgers and Angels, A’s and Giants, and Mets and Yankees are rarely home at the same time. Kevin understands that, but thinks baseball should occasionally promote such twin bills. “They could do it on a Saturday and sell tickets to each game and a bus ticket to the other stadium,” he said. Four Things to Consider When Choosing Artwork f you’ve just moved into a new place then you’re probably excited to decorate. If you’re lacking décor or don’t have an overall vision for your space yet, try spicing it up by adding artwork. It can be a challenge to find artwork that is meaningful, affordable, and complimentary to your space, so here are some details to consider when choosing the perfect art piece for your new dwelling.

I

SIZE & SHAPE It’s important to plan and know what kind of size and shape you are looking for in your new apartment. Taking measurements of the wall you would like to fill is a good place to start, but there is more to choosing artwork than mere fit on the wall. You want to make sure that the piece will not overwhelm the space it is meant to occupy. If you live in a small space, a mirror might serve as the best wall ornament as they can enlarge a room. Remember also that “art” comes in many shapes and sizes.

COLOR Consider whether your pieces are meant

to be the spark in the room or just perpetuate a minimalist aesthetic. The color of a piece can tie the room together, add interest, bring out undertones in your furniture, and emphasize parts of a palette that you like best. If you intend to use the piece over the years, variety of color is important so that the work can shine in many rooms and fit with multiple aesthetics. Artwork is often an investment, so it’s important to choose colors and images that you really love and connect with. Also, the color of your work/ the color scheme of your rooms can really impact your mood. I love yellow kitchens because being in a bright space when I am starting my day feels encouraging, but I like blues in my bedroom because my bedroom is meant to be a calming space.

MEANING Just like with color, the subject of the artwork can impact your mood and the overall vibe of a space. Does the art piece inspire you? Is it a still life that makes you want to cook or study? What is your intention for the purpose of the room, and

Quebec House Photo: Cajsa Lilliehook via Flickr Creative Commons

how does the subject of the piece fit into that goal? Is this piece a focal point or an accent? If it’s an accent, what is it meant to highlight? Designating the function you wish the piece to serve (create calm, create interest, blend in, stand out, etc.) can help you hone in on what you are looking for.

PLACEMENT/FEASIBILITY Once you’ve found a piece that speaks to you and your space, make sure you know how to hang it and where – this goes back to size and shape a bit in the sense that the piece needs to fit in the space where you want it. Remember that some art is heavier than others and it’s important to make sure you have the tools you need to stably mount the work. Remember that finding the perfect piece is a process. In order to find the best focal point, you may have to wait and let it come to you. You might stumble upon meaningful art while traveling, or you might find a local artist you want to showcase. If you’re patient, creative, and use these tips then you can’t go wrong! n By Elaina Hundley for Apartment Showcase

‘Wakefield’

A swim in shallow waters

With raunchy gags and inane jokes, ‘Baywatch’ forgets a key ingredient: laughs FILM REVIEW If, indeed, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson ditches Hollywood to become our next president, “Baywatch” may be singled out as the low point of his prepolitical career. That’s right — the man who starred in “Tooth Fairy” has outdone himself. Johnson being Johnson, he’s still a delight to watch. But there’s only so much a charismatic giant can do when he’s up against a blend of lazy grossout humor and inane male wish fulfillment weighed down by terrible editing and lame action. The movie, based on one of the most popular television series of the 1990s, doesn’t go for the same broad audience as the show. David Hasselhoff’s

TV juggernaut about a team of capable lifeguards was fairly family-friendly stuff, even with all the bodacious babes slowmotion jogging along the beach in bathing suits. If the many Fbombs in the first few minutes of this adaptation don’t tip viewers off to the R rating, they’ll have things figured out by the time a character peers underneath the scrotum of a corpse, looking for evidence of malfeasance. The story is typical action-comedy stuff: California lifeguard Mitch Buchannon (Johnson) and his crew try to get to the bottom of a murder mystery that involves a sultry land developer played by Priyanka Chopra. At the same time, Mitch has to contend with a new hotshot rookie, Matt Brody

18.4%

‘Baywatch’ (R, 116 min.) DIRECTOR: Seth Gordon STARS: Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron,

Alexandra Daddario, Priyanka Chopra IN A NUTSHELL: A devoted lifeguard and his brazen new recruit lead an effort to uncover a murder mystery that could save their beloved beach.

(Zac Efron, so muscular his pecs look like they might burst through his skin), a disgraced Olympic swimmer nicknamed “the vomit comet.” Don’t worry, you’ll get to see why in vivid green detail. Matt — a dead ringer for Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte — doesn’t understand teamwork, so Mitch takes it upon himself to

show this selfish hunk the error of his ways. And just like that, the comedy takes a turn toward after-school-special territory. It’s no shock that the women in “Baywatch” don’t have much to do beyond look good. Maybe dodging bad lines was a relief for the actresses. It’s not like the screenplay, by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, gives performers much to work with. The height of humor is a running gag that involves Mitch calling Matt derisive names like “boy band.” This isn’t knee-slapping stuff. Neither are the gross-out gags all that shocking. If anything, “Baywatch” is a litmus test for how low Johnson can sink while still winning us all over. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FILM STUDY

The percentage of studio-made films in 2016 that included at least one LGBT character, according to GLAAD, in the advocacy group’s fifth annual Studio Responsibility Index report. The study surveyed 125 releases from the seven major Hollywood studios and found them to be severely lagging behind strides made in TV and independent film. Lionsgate, Sony Pictures and Walt Disney Studios were given failing ratings; 20th Century Fox, Paramount and Warner Bros. were rated “poor”; Universal was rated “insufficient.” (AP/EXPRESS) London’s June 1 premiere of “The Mummy” canceled in wake of Manchester attack

PARAMOUNT PICTURES

R, 106 min.

“Wakefield” is a movie about the type of self-justifying first-person narrator/nut job you’d find in an Edgar Allan Poe tale. The wackadoodle protagonist here is Howard Wakefield (Bryan Cranston), a man who follows a raccoon into the attic of his garage one night and then never leaves it. Though Cranston is consistently watchable, Howard’s journey into — and potentially out of — madness is a hard one to keep up with. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

‘War Machine’ TV-MA, 121 min.

Netflix’s ambitious feature film, in which Brad Pitt plays a larger-than-life military leader based on the notorious Gen. Stanley McChrystal, is both a parody and reflection on the hubris, self-deception and futility of U.S. strategy in Afghanistan. The result is a weirdly kaleidoscopic version of history that, ultimately, feels squeamishly on-point for the present time. ANN HORNADAY (TWP)

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

The summer crop: I can put up with tentpole season I am a big proponent of seasonality. I scoff at strawberries in December, preferring instead to gorge when May comes. If there are no tomatoes in my backyard, I’m not eating tomatoes. I may be a food snob, but I’m not touching mealy apples in August that come straight from storage. My diet is at least partially dictated by what’s outside. My work — writing about movies — is much the same way. Thanksgiving until midJanuary is Oscar season, followed by the long slog through mostly crap that goes until

Memorial Day. And now here we are: The first lettuces are showing up, the corn is anklehigh and it’s time to start blowing stuff up. Because at the multiplex, like at my neighborhood farm stand, summer is time to make money. And that means tentpoles. Tentpole movies, as the name implies, are the low-risk, high-reward films that prop up a studio and keep it in business. But they support other stuff too, like merchandise (“Buy this ‘Cars 3’ Lightning McQueen that is totally different from the other 37 Lightning McQueens you already have!”) and sequels. Lots of sequels. It seems some movies

“The Get Down” canceled on Netflix after one season

“Spider-Man: Homecoming”

“Transformers: The Last Knight”

get made for the sole purpose of making other movies. This summer we will drown in tentpole sequels: In addition to “Cars 3,” arriving June 16, we’ve got this week’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” the fifth in the series; “Transformers: The Last Knight,” another No. 5; and “Despicable Me 3,” because those Minions are the cockroaches of animation and will never die. We’re also getting a number of films that we can reasonably expect to see “sequeled” down the road. Depending on its opening numbers this weekend, it’s not out of the realm of possibility we’ll see a “Baywatch 2.” “Wonder Woman,” which is already kind of a prequel-sequel, since it’s post-“Batman v Superman,” pre-“Justice League” and set in World War I, could easily get a follow-up. Judging by my son’s room, there are 11 billion “Captain Underpants” movies just waiting for scripts (the upcoming film’s subtitle, after all, is “The First Epic Movie”). “The

“Wonder Woman”

“Cars Cars3”3

Mummy” smells like a series, and the Avengers continue to be represented with “SpiderMan: Homecoming.” There are exceptions; I don’t think we’ll see Christopher Nolan do a “Dunkirk 2: The Dunkirkening,” and though we’re getting “War for the Planet of the Apes” (third in a series that’s a second reboot), we’re also getting “Tulip Fever.” It’s easy to complain about tentpole season — the movies, as a whole, are louder and stupider and they have more Taco Bell tie-ins than their award-season counterparts. But I’ve accepted that, just as making that sweet cantaloupe cash keeps that farm stand going through the lean, kalecentric winters, this is the time when studios make the bank that (ideally) can support the movies that are more about art and less about money. To everything there is a season, and this season’s color is green. And that’s just fine. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby.

Curses! It’s yet another bloated ‘Pirates’ movie. FILM REVIEW Five movies in, Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” saga is starting to make the storytelling in “The Lord of the Rings” series feel fleet by comparison. When “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” opens, chronically soused pirate antihero Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is still alive, even though one character speculates that he may not be. After a ridiculously bloated early set piece centering on a bank robbery, Jack’s services are sought in the recovery of Poseidon’s trident, a mystical talisman thought to have the power to break curses. And there are two in need of breaking here: Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) is still trapped in a state of putrescent decay aboard the shipwrecked Flying Dutchman. The other accursed soul belongs to Captain Salazar, a Beetlejuice-like wraith trapped in the Devil’s Triangle. Javier Bardem has a lot of fun as the villain, spitting out the name Jack Sparrow as if it were a piece of rotten food. Salazar has got an old vendetta with Jack — which we find out about later, along with one other big reveal that feels less like a blockbuster than a nothingburger. Yes, “Dead Men” remains true to its Disney theme park roots. Loud, overstimulating and hard to take in all in one sitting, it feels like a vacation you’ll need a vacation from. @ROB_STOTT, parodying ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s new rule in Australia that customers can’t order two scoops of the same flavor unless marriage equality becomes law. “When you order it online versus when it arrives.”

@PETESOUZA, tweeting about the news that White House press secretary Sean Spicer was not part of President Trump’s entourage who got to meet Pope Francis. Many people said that Spicer, a Catholic, would have loved to be in the meeting with the pope. CNN reported that he found out at the last minute that he wasn’t on the list.

@BIBBLE8GUBBLES, comparing ABC’s remake of “Dirty Dancing”

Twitter users were not having the time of their lives watching Abigail Breslin as Baby and Colt Prattes as Johnny, reprising Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze’s iconic roles. This tweet from @care4volleyball sums it up: “Everyone ... is asking why ABC didn’t cast better dancers. Answer: real dancers know that you don’t mess with ‘Dirty Dancing.’ ”

DIFFICULT

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
