New York City police are searching for a man who has been pulling the emergency brakes on subway cars. Police on Thursday released images of a man who rode on the outside of a car for several stops before entering, pulling the emergency brake and fleeing. There have been about 40 similar incidents since February. Police believe the prankster is using a key to gain access to an unoccupied motorman car, where he can engage the brake. (AP)

Authorities say a man drove drunk to a New Jersey police station to pick up a woman who’d been charged with drunken driving. Hackettstown police say Morgan Doran was arrested early Friday after a traffic stop. She was taken to the station, where she contacted Sebastian Rehm to pick her up. When Rehm arrived, authorities say, he smelled of alcohol and they charged him with drunken driving. Both were eventually released to another driver. (AP)

One last ride for Rolling Thunder THE DISTRICT There was a line to see the man in charge. “Artie,” people called. “Artie, did you see?” It was the Sunday before Memorial Day, and in Washington, that has long meant that one of the world’s largest motorcycle rallies was in town. Every year since 1988, riders have roared into the District for Rolling Thunder, a demonstration in support of veterans, prisoners of war and service members who went missing in action. But this year, the organization’s leader, Artie Muller, had announced that the financial and logistical burden of making the rally happen had become too much; after 2019, the event in the nation’s capital would be no more. The news inspired hundreds of thousands of bikers — possibly a record number — to flock to the Pentagon parking lot Sunday morning, ready for their final ride around the Mall. And then word started spreading: President Trump had just tweeted that Rolling Thunder

was not going to end after all. “The Great Patriots of Rolling Thunder WILL be coming back to Washington, D.C. next year, & hopefully for many years to come,” he wrote. But the organizers behind Rolling Thunder were shaking their heads. They had not received a call from the White House. The Pentagon had not been in touch. The rally would still cost around $200,000 — far too much of which,
the organizers believe, goes to parking lot rental and security. Unless the venue started costing Rolling Thunder less, its organizers said, nothing was going to change. Instead of having one ride in Washington, local chapters will put on smaller rallies across the country next year. Spokeswoman Nancy Regg said Sunday: “If we are invited to the White House, we’ll go, but as of right now, this is our final ride.”
Around her, the parking lot was packed with motorcycles, lined edge to edge. In came Bob Bradford, a 79-year-old from Maryland, his oxygen machine strapped onto a Harley Trike, its tubes slipped beneath his helmet so he could breathe through all the fumes. On another bike was Harjot Pannu, a 51-year-old from New Jersey who always orders his helmets one size too big so he
can still wear his crisp white turban underneath. The back of his leather vest read, “Sikh Motorcycle Club.” To Muller, the Trump tweet didn’t mean much of anything. He was tired, and hot, and 74 years old. His signature expletives had been flying all day. But the truth was, he didn’t want Rolling Thunder to end. That’s why he thought the smaller rallies in cities across the country would be better. But now, he was looking at the biggest crowd he’d ever seen. “You know,” he said, starting to choke up, “it really gets to you. Because it shows you there are people who do care about others,” when too many people care “about nobody but themselves.” All he could do now was treat this ride like it was his last. His sleek black Harley was waiting at the front of the procession. He traded his hat for a helmet. “Proud to be American,” it read across the front. “Come on,” he said to his 11-year-old grandson, Gavin. The boy climbed into the seat behind him. Muller looked up at the Washington Monument and his engine roared to life. JESSICA CONTRERA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘It’s symbolically important’
THE DISTRICT
Boy, 15, fatally shot in Congress Heights
THE DISTRICT After weeks of round-the-clock protests, police patrols and sometimes violent clashes, the Washington street on which the Venezuelan Embassy sits has returned to a quiet order. The protesters have gone. So, too, have banners that hung from the embassy’s red-brick facade for more than a month, declaring, “Stop the coup.” Police cars that dotted the Georgetown street have vanished. Activists on both sides of the showdown between supporters of President Nicolás Maduro and opposition leader Juan Guaidó say their influence among diplomats and American lawmakers has increased markedly since their high-profile clash. Members of the Venezuelan diaspora established an organization to carry on the activism started in the street, and Code Pink organizers say demonstrators are joining their cause, inspired by what they saw. Even the building, now in the hands of Guaidó’s handpicked ambassador, Carlos Vecchio, was transformed. Vecchio said Friday the structure suffered “a lot” of physical damage during the demonstrations. The building also became a symbol — and a trophy — in the international tug-of-war over Venezuela’s political future. “Obviously, controlling the

embassy in Washington is not the same thing as controlling the streets of Caracas,” said Allen S. Weiner, director of Stanford Law School’s program on international and comparative law. “But it’s symbolically important.” The activists — Margaret Flowers, 56; Adrienne Pine, 48; David Paul, 69; and Kevin Zeese, 63 — were the last demonstrators of about 50 who had spent nights at the embassy since early April. Code Pink co-founder Medea Benjamin said that by staging the demonstration, activists were able to “engage in the broader issue” and attract the attention of lawmakers and the news media. with their optics on that front,” Barqueiro said. “It’s important to be discussing neo-imperialism and what the best course of action ought to be. The problem is they’re now connected with the Maduro government, and that’s probably a mistake.” On Friday, Vecchio posted photos online of himself in the embassy, unfurling the Venezuelan flag from a second-story window. Inside, his colleagues were assessing damage they said had been done to the building during the standoff. Vecchio raised a fist in the air as the flag flapped in the wind. “Venezuela libre,” he said. The union representing Baltimore police is drawing criticism after a comment on social media that described some youths as “criminals” following arrests at the Inner Harbor. The Baltimore Sun reported the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3 wrote on Twitter on Saturday that while some officers were responding to a crowd of rowdy young people, officers should “Protect each other and don’t fall into the trap they are only kids,” adding that “Some are criminals!” Police said six people were arrested. The American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland called union president Sgt. Mike Mancuso’s statement “unacceptable.” (AP)
Federal prosecutors have released the identities of four men they say gunned down a 10-year-old girl who was on her way to get ice cream. An indictment unsealed last week names Gregory Taylor, Qujuan Thomas, and Antonio and Isaiah Murchison as the gunmen. Authorities say they’re still seeking Isaiah Murchison, as the others were already in custody on unrelated murder and gun charges. Makiyah Wilson was killed last summer while walking through the crowded courtyard of her D.C. apartment complex. Eleven people are indicted on gang-related charges in the shooting. A hearing is set for June 20. (AP)

Not-so-sweet treat: Shutdown felt even at doughnut shops Metro is providing, said Krupicka, who also owns Sugar Shack franchises in Arlington and D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood. But he worried there wouldn’t be enough shuttles and that those that do come would be stuck in traffic. There’s also a good chance people will work from home more often. “If people aren’t going to an office, they’re not buying two dozen doughnuts,” he said. Metro riders may be worried about the impact on their commutes. But business owners like Krupicka are anxious about their livelihoods. Four years ago, he was on the other side, serving as a Democrat in the Virginia House of Delegates. He’d order boxes of doughnuts for his office from Sugar Shack’s first store in Richmond. There are many things that divide us, but eating free doughnuts is not one of them. Democratic and Republican delegates would stop by his office. Krupicka thought there was a demand for the doughnuts in Northern Virginia and D.C., and was still serving in office when he opened the first of his stores in Alexandria. Discovering it was a fulltime job, he decided not to run for reelection in 2015. Now he finds himself on the receiving end of government policies. “The irony is that I’d probably be a better elected official now, because I appreciate real life more than before,” he said. ‘Ambassadors’ out on first days of Metro closure

When the government can manage to keep itself open and Metro is keeping all of its trains running, the Sugar Shack Donuts shop in Alexandria is well situated near the Braddock Road Metro station. Sometimes the store’s owner, Rob Krupicka, stands at the corner and watches the commuters headed toward the Metro with a box or two of doughnuts they’ve picked up to take to the office. Near the table where Krupicka sat last Friday was a sign of the sweet life he’d imagined when he opened the shop: stacks of doughnuts, some glazed, some covered with cinnamon sugar and others with colored sprinkles. But there was also an acidic note of anger in the air, and a metallic hint of irony. The Yellow and Blue lines were about to stop running nearby until September, with the closure of Braddock Road and five other stations south of Reagan National Airport. “Two big hits caused by government ineptitude,” he’d fumed in an email a couple of days earlier. The first had been the 35day shutdown of the federal government last December and January, which left many of his customers not knowing when they’d be paid next. The line of commuters dried up like a 2-day-old cruller. And now it’s the Metro shutdown. Many customers might still come by to take the shuttle

it again. “They’re the ones who are going to feel this most directly,” he said. Krupicka was hoping the free coffee he’s offering customers with Metro cards on Tuesdays will help. He’s also offering coffee to construction workers at all of his shops. Maybe the caffeine will get them to finish the project faster, he said. But there’s not much else he can do. “I can’t cut back on the dough. I can’t put fewer sprinkles on a doughnut. I can’t put less cinnamon and sugar on a cinnamon and sugar doughnut,” he said. On Saturday, yellow-vested Metro employees stood outside the shuttered Braddock Road station, explaining shuttle options to surprised travelers who did not know about the 107-day closure of every station south of Reagan National. “Where are you traveling?” they asked over and over, steering people onto shuttle buses that arrived every few minutes. The transit agency’s “ambassadors,” as they called themselves, wore buttons indicating languages in which they could answer questions, including Spanish and Amharic. They sometimes had to shout over the sound of the construction, which was well underway on the first day. “I was like, ‘Yo, what’s happening?’ The lady in the yellow vest was like, ‘You know the station’s closed, right?’ ” said Mouaad Jaani as he waited for a shuttle to take him to the Crystal City station. “I’m like, ‘I did not know that.’ ” Gloria Saez said her condo building near the Braddock Road station posted a sign warning residents they should expect any trip to take a half-hour longer. What’s a person without a car to do? Saez thinks she’ll try biking the 12 miles to Fort Totten. “I’m a therapist,” she explained. “I’m thinking, ‘How do you make it into something more positive?’ ” This way, she’ll get more exercise this summer, she said. POLITICS President Trump on Monday denied that North Korea had fired any ballistic missiles or violated the United Nations Security Council resolutions, taking the word of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un over the assessments of his own national security adviser and his Japanese host. He praised the murderous dictator as a “very smart man.” He also again sided with Kim over former Vice President Joe Biden, after his Democratic rival was branded a “fool of low IQ” by North Korea’s state media for calling the North Korean leader a dictator and a tyrant. At a joint news conference in Tokyo with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Trump gave cover to Kim as he directly contradicted his national security adviser, John Bolton, as well as Abe, by arguing that Pyongyang had not launched ballistic missiles this month or violated U.N. Security Council resolutions. “My people think it could have been a violation,” Trump said. “I view it differently.” When pressed, Trump added that he was not “personally” bothered by North Korea’s shortrange missile tests this month. Korea had violated the Security Council resolutions by firing short-range ballistic missiles. North Korea’s Foreign Ministry was quick to criticize Bolton on Monday, with an unnamed spokesman quoted in state media as calling him a “war maniac” who has a “different mental structure from ordinary people.” But Bolton didn’t get much support from Trump, who appears keen to think the best of Kim and their personal chemistry amid growing signs that one of his major foreign policy initiatives is failing. “I view it as a man — perhaps he wants to get attention, and perhaps not, who knows,” Trump said, referring to Kim and the tests. “It doesn’t matter. know is that there have been no nuclear tests. There have been no ballistic missiles going out. There have been no long-range missiles going out.” The human rights atrocities on Kim’s watch are plentiful, including forced labor, deliberate starvation and executions. But Trump portrayed the North Korean dictator as a leader who believes, as the president himself said he does, that his country has “tremendous economic potential,” but who understands he can’t develop it while still pursuing his nuclear ambitions. “He knows that with nuclear, that’s never going to happen, only bad can happen,” Trump said. ‘We’re going to keep fighting’ PROVIDENCE, R.I. A bill seeking to preserve abortion protections in state law fails to pass a key committee. Lawmakers cite God, church and faith in proclaiming their opposition to it. Abortion rights groups protest outside a gathering of lawmakers. What sounds like a legislative fight in a state controlled by antiabortion Republicans is actually quite different. The bill seeking to protect abortion rights is in Rhode Island, a state controlled by Democrats at all levels of political power, and it’s stalled. “This is an issue, I think, where it’s very difficult to draw a line down party lines,” said Democratic state Sen. Erin Lynch Prata, a committee chairwoman who voted in favor of the bill. Rhode Island is not the only state led politically by Democrats where abortion rights legislation has either died or stalled this year. A bill to remove a dormant criminal ban on abortion in New Mexico was voted down in March by the Democrat-led state Senate. In Hawaii, where all but six of the

Activists gathered in Providence, R.I., on Thursday to pressure legislative leaders to bring an abortion rights bill to the Senate floor for a vote.
76 lawmakers are Democrats, a bill allowing advanced-practice registered nurses to perform some abortions passed the Senate but died in a House committee. To be sure, some Democraticled states are taking steps to enshrine the right to an abortion should the U.S. Supreme Court ever overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. Among them are
Nevada, New York and Vermont. But the enthusiasm and recent success of anti-abortion activists to pass near-total bans on the procedure in about a half-dozen Republican-dominated states provides a stark contrast to the more muted response in states controlled by Democrats. In those states, the legislative records and personal views

of Democratic lawmakers are mixed. Jocelyn Foye, co-director of The Womxn Project in Rhode Island, said she thinks that while many politicians run as Democrats in the state to win, they don’t always vote like Democrats. She said she is frustrated that the abortion-protection bill has not progressed. “At the same time, it has empowered me, as well as the community we have working with us, to really just not let up,” Foye said. “We’re going to keep fighting.” Andrea Miller, president of the National Institute for Reproductive Health, a New York-based nonprofit advocacy group, said abortion opponents sensed an opportunity to challenge Roe v. Wade before a more conservative Supreme Court and used that to make a major legislative push in Republican-dominated states this spring. “At the same time, though, we really are seeing momentum in these other states that are seeking to do anything and everything they need to protect abortion rights and advance access to abortion care,” Miller said. “We have a lot of confidence that those are going to continue to move forward in the coming weeks.” JENNIFER McDERMOTT AND DAVID A. Missing hiker on Maui found after 2 weeks MAUI, HAWAII A Hawaii woman was found alive in a forest on Maui island after going missing more than two weeks earlier. Amanda Eller was found injured in the Makawao Forest Reserve, the Maui News reported Friday. Family spokeswoman Sarah Haynes confirmed she spoke with Eller’s father, John. Eller was airlifted to safety. “I was crying tears of joy,” Eller’s mother, Julia, said. “I never gave up hope for a minute. I knew that we would find her.” The physical therapist from the Maui town of Haiku went missing on May 8. Her white Toyota RAV4 was found in the forest’s parking lot with her phone and wallet inside. Javier Cantellops said he was searching for Eller from a helicopter along with Chris Berquist and Troy Helmers when they spotted her about 3:45 p.m. near the Kailua reservoir, according to Maui Police Department spokesman Lt. Gregg Okamoto and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Her mother told the Maui News that Amanda Eller survived by staying near a water source and eating wild raspberries and strawberry guavas. She even ate a couple of moths, Julia Eller said. Amanda Eller suffered a leg fracture, abrasions on her ankles and a severe sunburn, but Julia Eller said that her daughter’s spirits were good. (AP)

Green parties gain in EU elections
Britain remains divided Britain’s two main parties were punished in the European elections, with early results Monday showing that voters turned to parties that were unequivocally pro-Brexit or pro-European Union. The single-issue Brexit Party of Nigel Farage, right, was the clear winner of the elections, with the potential to impact the race over who becomes the next British prime minister after Theresa May announced on Friday that she would step down. Increased presence in the European Parliament could boost climate action across the continent EUROPE Green parties’ surprisingly strong showing in elections for the 751-seat European Parliament raised hopes — particularly among young voters — that global warming and other environmental issues will get more serious consideration on the continent. Provisional results Monday
showed the left-leaning Greens coming in fourth in the balloting with 69 seats, an increase of 17 from the last election, five years ago. Perhaps more significantly, the results showed how environmental concerns can transcend the political issues that dominate most European Union elections. “The European election was a climate election,” declared Anna

Kretzschmar of Berlin, who said the lift the Greens received in Sunday’s vote would give them a stronger voice to raise the alarm about global warming.
The Green movement has strongly backed scientists’ calls for the 28-nation bloc to end all greenhouse gas emissions by mid-century, a goal that would
require an epic shift in Europe’s economy away from fossil fuels. In Germany, the Greens did particularly well in large cities and among young voters, according to the Infratest dimap research institute. The gains followed months of street protests from students demanding action to stop global warming. In France, the environmental EELV party received almost 13.5% of the vote, coming in third. Green parties also polled strongly in Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Denmark and the Netherlands. “The center of gravity of European politics is shifting,” said Yannick Jadot, the EELV’s lead candidate.” FRANK JORDANS (AP)

Crowded atop Everest Too many people and too little time made for an especially deadly climbing season Fiat Chrysler offers to merge with Renault
ANKIT ADHIK ARI AND JOANNA SL ATER
BUSINESS Fiat Chrysler proposed on Monday to merge with France’s Renault to create the world’s third-biggest automaker, worth $40 billion, and combine forces in the race to make electric and autonomous vehicles. The merged company would produce some 8.7 million vehicles a year, leapfrogging General Motors and trailing only Volkswagen and Toyota. Shares of both companies jumped on the news of the offer, which would see each side’s shareholders split ownership in the new manufacturer. Renault welcomed what it called a “friendly” offer and said such a fusion could “improve Renault’s industrial footprint and be a generator of additional value for the Alliance” with Japan’s Nissan and Mitsubishi. The French manufacturer had wanted to merge fully with Nissan, but those plans were derailed by last year’s arrest of boss Carlos Ghosn on financial misconduct charges in Japan. Now, questions are growing over the Renault-NissanMitsubishi alliance, which together make more passenger cars than any one company. While Fiat Chrysler says the merger with Renault would accommodate the alliance and lead to savings for them, it is unclear how the Japanese companies might react in the longer term to being tied to a much larger partner. NEPAL Chatur Tamang was on his way to the roof of the world when he hit a traffic jam. Ahead of him, on the final ascent to Mount Everest, he saw more than 100 people bunched together on the narrow ridge that leads to the summit — a place so high that it is known as the “death zone,” where the human body has trouble functioning. Some of those descending from the summit pleaded desperately with those ascending to clear a way for them to pass since they had run out of oxygen. “That sent chills down my spine,” said Tamang, 45, a mountaineering guide who lives in Russia. He fears that if no action is taken, the crowds next year could be worse, with potentially fatal consequences. At least 11 people died trying to reach the summit of the world’s tallest mountain this month, the deadliest climbing season for the peak in four years. One factor contributing to this year’s toll appears to have been crowding, as scores of people attempted to ascend in a short window of good weather, producing delays that extended the time climbers spent at deadly altitudes. Now officials in Nepal are reviewing whether to change the way access to Everest works. Some experts say that the government should extend the climbing season in May or implement certain requirements for climbers, a number of whom lack experience or sign on with companies offering bargain-priced expeditions. Nirmal Purja, an accomplished climber who is attempting to summit 14 peaks worldwide within seven months, was on his way down from the summit at Everest when he decided to stop and photograph the scene behind him. It was unusually cold, he said, and

extraordinarily crowded. “I’ve seen traffic, but not this crazy,” said Purja, who has summited Everest four times. Purja is among those who believe that the solution is to lengthen the traditional climbing season at Everest to spread out the climbers attempting to reach the summit. Because of the crowds, some climbers took longer than normal to make their way up the mountain. One of them was Nihal Bhagwan, a 27-year old Indian man who died of dehydration, exhaustion and high-altitude sickness, said Keshav Paudel of Peak Promotions, the expedition company guiding Bhagwan’s trip. Bhagwan spent two days each at two intermediary points on the climb, said Paudel, though he should have spent only one at each. Already weak when he climbed to the summit, Bhagwan became totally depleted while descending, said Paudel, who attributed his death both to the traffic and

extreme exhaustion. Others who died this month included two other Indians, two Britons, two Irish citizens and two Americans. Some involved in the trekking business said what unfolded on Everest last week was not abnormal and a reminder of the deadly stakes involved. “If you are setting out on an Everest expedition, it is no less than heading for a war,” said Mingma Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks. is like “attaining the highest pilgrimage,” he continued, and sometimes delays are unavoidable. “It is just like waiting for your turn outside a temple.” Nepalese officials are reluctant to curb the number of climbers, who are also an important source of revenue for the country. “The government cannot just say no to the tourists who come to ask for permits,” said Meera Acharya, director at the Department of Tourism with responsibility for mountaineering. “Personally, I feel that it is not as much about the number of permits as what kind of climbers we are issuing the permits to.” After this year’s expeditions are concluded, Acharya said officials would analyze the data and determine how to move forward. “The mountain is for every human being,” Purja said. But it has “to be managed properly.”

NCAA LACROSSE CHAMPIONSHIP
Cavaliers claim throne
VIRGINIA 13, YALE 9 Matt Moore scored four goals and Virginia won its sixth NCAA lacrosse championship, beating defending champion Yale 13-9 on Monday. “It was a perfect ending to a great story,” Moore said. Michael Kraus added three goals and Alex Rode made 13 saves for the Cavaliers (17-3), who stifled Yale’s high-powered attack to dethrone the Bulldogs in front of 31,528 fans at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field. The Cavaliers took home their first championship since 2011. They previously won in 1972, 1999, 2003 and 2006. Freshman Matt Brandau led the Bulldogs (15-4) with three goals, including one with 4:30 left that gave them the record for most goals in a single NCAA tournament. Yale finished with 68 goals across four NCAA tournament games, but the nine it tallied Monday was a season low. The Cavaliers limited their chances by slowing the game and holding the ball deep into the shot clock throughout the contest.

TERPS’ NATIONAL TITLES
The number of women’s lacrosse national titles Maryland has won — the most in history — following the Terps’ 12-10 win over Boston College on Sunday in Baltimore. It marked their fifth national championship under coach Cathy Reese, who was hired in 2007. Brindi Griffin and Grace Griffin each scored three goals and senior goalie Megan Taylor earned MVP honors with 10 saves. Second-seeded Boston College entered the final averaging more than 17 goals per game. (EXPRESS)
“That was very frustrating,” Yale coach Andy Shay said. “We like to run and we like to play fast.” The Bulldogs, seeded fourth, had stormed past top-seeded Penn State 21-17 in Saturday’s
semifinals after the third-seeded Cavaliers nipped second-seeded Duke 13-12, snapping an 11-game losing streak to their ACC rival. Trailing 6-2 at halftime, Yale quickly got back into it with two goals in the first 1:09 of the

second half. But Virginia retook control with the next five goals, including two unassisted strikes from Moore. Moore, a native of nearby Garnet Valley, Pa., also scored the first two goals for a 2-1 advantage after the opening quarter. He set Virginia’s single-season points record with 89, but said winning a national championship near where he grew up trumped any personal accolades. Rode was the tournament’s most outstanding player after making 31 stops in the semifinals and finals, combining for a .608 save percentage. “Alex made some big saves early when we made mistakes and they found some openings,” Virginia coach Lars Tiffany said. “That allowed our defense to grow more comfortable.” This was Yale and Virginia’s first meeting since 1991. “If you sit at my desk, there’s five championship trophies hanging over me,” Tiffany said. “And you feel that.” The sixth one will be there soon. Streak ends as Nats blow another lead The Nationals’ threegame winning streak ended Monday as the bullpen blew another lead behind ace Max Scherzer, above, losing 3-2 to the Marlins at home. After Scherzer went six innings and left leading 2-1, Tanner Rainey allowed the tying run in the seventh for the Nationals’ 11th blown save, matching the Cubs for most in the majors. Kyle Barraclough (1-2) then allowed Miguel Rojas’ go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth. The Nationals loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning but could not push the tying run across against the relief duo Nick Anderson and Adam Conley. Sergio Romo pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 10th save, dropping Washington to 22-32. The Nationals fell to 2-10 in games started by Scherzer, who allowed seven hits and struck out six. (AP)

Spurs’ Kane is ‘ready to go’ for Champions League final

Santa Anita to probe death of 26th horse since Dec. 26
Tottenham striker Harry Kane says he is “ready to go” for the Champions League final after returning to full training. Kane’s fitness has been the subject of much attention after he sustained a “significant” ankle ligament injury in April in the first leg of the quarterfinal against Manchester City. The England captain is back involved with the main group in training and has declared his availability to manager Mauricio Pochettino for the match against Liverpool in Madrid on Saturday. “I feel good. I started to feel my way back with the team at the end of last week,” Kane said. (AP)
Bill Buckner, a star hitter who became best known for an infamous mistake, died Monday after a long battle with dementia. He was 69. Buckner won an NL batting title, was an All-Star and got 2,715 hits in a 22-year career. But a little groundball in the 1986 World Series forever changed his legacy. Trying for their first crown since 1918, the Red Sox led the Mets 5-3 going into the bottom of the 10th inning in Game 6. The Mets tied it with two outs, then Mookie Wilson hit a trickler up the first base line that rolled through Buckner’s legs, an error that let Ray Knight rush home from second base with the winning run. (AP)
The Stronach Group, owner of Santa Anita, says it is investigating whether new rules were followed before the 26th horse death at the Southern California racetrack. Kochees, a 9-year-old gelding, was euthanized Sunday after injuring his leg in a race the day before. It was the third horse death in nine days and the 26th overall since the season began Dec. 26. Spokesman Stefan Friedman said Monday that “consequences will be swift” if violations are found. Among the rules in place since March: A trainer’s veterinarian must sign off on a horse’s fitness before the track’s veterinarian can. (AP)

fit A goat scampers in front of Susan Coursey and Judy Goodstein.
WELL-BEING A gentle breeze blew through the Congressional Cemetery in Southeast Washington. It was a balmy Saturday morning and the atmosphere was solemn — except for the bleating of 15 baby goats. They were there, of course, for yoga. It was Washington’s first foray into goat yoga, which pairs meditative poses with what amounts to an all-ages petting zoo. The idea originated in 2016 in Oregon, at a birthday party. It wasn’t meant to be a thing. But now it’s a thing. For Paul Williams, the director of the Congressional Cemetery, goat yoga was a long time coming. Until recently, District law forbade the activity under a longstanding no-touching-goats policy. “I tried everything I could for about a year to get goat yoga,” Williams said, “and the Health Department just put up every obstacle they possibly could.” The cemetery already hosted classes — “Yoga Mortis,” they call it — and a loophole in D.C.
Emily Tye, of Logan Circle, reacts to a goat interrupting her garland pose.
regulations allowed it to use goats to clear out invasive plants. But the no-touch policy, based on the Animal Control Act of 1979, meant goat yoga was out of the question. The city council’s Health Committee was already in the process of trimming regulations. The council expedited the issue by tacking a farm animal provision onto a bill that overhauled the District’s vital records system. The bill passed in October, allowing goats and sheep into Washington for the purposes of, among other things, “participating in yoga or similar activities.” Williams learned of the change only after the church that owns
the property sought a permit for a nativity scene — “a couple sheep, goats, a llama or something” — and was informed of the District’s new pro-goat stance. Goats are still considered a “prohibited species” and require a special permit and immunizations. They must be inspected by a veterinarian within 30 days of an event. This leaves a narrow window for goat yoga, when baby goats are old enough to be vaccinated but still small enough to comfortably climb atop a yogi. The recent classes evinced the fruit of the goat lobby’s labor. “The karma of fighting for this class for the past two years is that the universe gave us this

gorgeous day in this beautiful space,” said instructor Kelly Carnes, standing in a clearing where the first 50 goat yoga participants sprawled out on mats. All five opening-weekend sessions sold out, with proceeds going to the nonprofit that runs the cemetery. Carnes led each group through a gentle sequence of poses inspired by the kids’ low center of gravity — to avoid injury to either species, “but also to give ample opportunities for the goats to crawl all over us, because that’s part of the fun, right?” “It was a pretty easy sell,” said Carnes, who had already led the cemetery’s Yoga Mortis sessions. “‘Hey, resident yoga teacher, do you want to add baby goats into your practice?’ Hell yeah, I do.” After the first session, the participants were similarly enthusiastic. “I’m so blissed out,” said Rachel Holmes of the District. “I feel like you’re a little bit more inward usually with regular yoga, and this sort of opens you up to what’s going on in nature around you. Plus, they’re soft and cuddly.” ORION DONOVAN-SMITH
Younger women are experiencing an alarming increase in heart attacks. According to research published in the journal Circulation, women ages 35 to 54 accounted for 31% of hospitalizations for heart attacks in 2014, up from 21% in 1995. Stress can affect heart health because the brain doesn’t know the difference between the physical and mental varieties, says Elizabeth Piccione, a cardiologist and assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. If you’re prone to high blood pressure and stress, Piccione urges you to be open with your physician. “People shouldn’t feel there’s a stigma to admitting feeling anxiety,” she says, adding that doctors should “acknowledge that the patient is coming to you for help, that they aren’t ‘crazy’ or ‘making things up.’ ” Such labels are often placed on women with cardiovascular disease.

Julianna Margulies delivers a dutifully disciplined performance as Lt. Col. Nancy Jaax, who oversees a high-security biosafety division at Fort Detrick. It’s the fall of 1989 when Nancy receives a strange sample for testing —and what she sees under the microscope sends her into red alert. Nancy reaches out to her mentor, rogue epidemiologist Wade Carter (Liam Cunningham), who was ostracized by his peers for his alarmist tendencies. A cocky lab tech (Topher Grace) thinks he knows better than Nancy, but spirals into panic when he suspects he’s been infected. Nancy also
must assert her authority when her worried husband, Jerry (Noah Emmerich), who is also a lieutenant colonel, takes over the mission to clear the contaminated lab of all its Ebola-exposed monkeys. Produced by Ridley Scott, the series gives thoughtful treatment to its depiction of safety precautions and scientific concern, yet the dialogue and drama fall disappointingly flat. The real problem exists in some murky zone between nonfiction and fiction. By sticking to “The Hot Zone’s” essential tale, this version remains a story of close calls. An Ebola epidemic never occurs, leaving the show’s writers too dependent on monkeys that leap out of dark corners with their fangs bared. Six hours of that is about four hours too much.
“Some studios wanted to tone down the sex and drugs so the film would get a PG-13 rating. But I just haven’t led a PG-13 rated life.” ELTON JOHN, in a column for The Guardian, explaining why he pushed for the upcoming biopic “Rocketman” to receive an R rating. “I didn’t want a film packed with drugs and sex,” he wrote, “but equally, everyone knows I had quite a lot of both during the 70s and 80s.”

John Waters remains a rebel in new memoir BOOK REVIEW “Hairspray” director John Waters may not have made a film since 2004, but he has toured a oneman show, hitchhiked across America and popped up in movies from “Seed of Chucky” to “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip.” Now he’s returned with a girthy new book of hot takes and shocking gossip. In “Mr. Know-It-All: The Tarnished Wisdom of a Filth Elder,” Waters’ memoir released last week, the 73-year-old recalls the rise and droop of his movie career and offers advice to aspiring filmmakers, style icons and “sensation-monger[s].” Sadly, it seems the book was born of existential crisis. “Suddenly the worst thing that can happen to a creative person has happened to me,” Waters writes. “I am accepted.” The book’s second half ditches the Hollywood memoir in favor of less structured but equally riotous material. Waters’ extended riffs on architecture, cuisine, Warhol and more are essentially a rebel’s attempt to buck the acceptance he’s accidentally found. In a chapter guaranteed to delight fans, Waters celebrates his 50-year friendship with actress Mink Stole with a carefully planned, LSD-fueled night in. That Waters has become an accidental darling of American culture may be a dirty shame to him, but it’s a blessing for the rest of us. CHARLES ARROWSMITH (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

@OLIVEBRINKER, reacting to the release date for “Sonic the Hedgehog” being pushed back to Feb. 14, 2020. The move came after widespread outcry over the CGI design of the titular character, specifically his oddly human teeth. After director Jeff Fowler said in early May the design would be fixed in time for the original November release, fans noted that such an overhaul would be taxing on the visual effects artists.
“If my wife ever falls off a cliff and it doesn’t become a meme, I’m divorcing her.” @BENNYWILLARD, tweeting about “Cliff Wife.” YouTuber
Shaun McBride on Thursday uploaded a video showing his wife, Jenny, falling off a ledge in Hawaii. She was not seriously injured. The dramatic vlog was not intended to be funny, but many on Twitter said it made them laugh. McBride became the latest “Wife Guy,” a man defined by viral events involving his wife. The foremost example is “Curvy Wife Guy,” who was ridiculed for posting about loving his wife’s “curvy” body.

“All good Australians know these are called Zooper Doopers.”
“Tell that wax figure to move so I can see Ariana’s wax figure.”
@THATSCARLETMOTH, replying to @fetusIeen’s inquiry into the name of the above popsicle tubes. Aussies and New Zealanders said “zooper doopers,” Canadians and some Americans called them “freeze pops” or “freezies,” while other Americans insisted on the brand name “Otter Pops.” Many people reminisced about things like how the plastic would often cut their mouths.
@REPUTERTION, joking about Madame
Tussauds London’s new wax statue of Ariana Grande. A picture of the figure was tweeted out last week, eliciting a barrage of criticism from the singer’s fans. They noted that the face, particularly the eyes, eyebrows and nose, looked nothing like Grande. Some even remarked it resembled Grande’s half-brother, Frankie, more than her.

Moby apologized to Natalie Portman in an Instagram post Saturday after she denied his claim that they dated nearly two decades ago. The singer wrote in his new memoir, “Then It Fell Apart,” that he dated Portman when he was 33 and she was 20. Portman disputed that account, telling Harper’s Bazaar that she was only 18 and Moby was merely “a much older man being creepy.” “I apologize, to Natalie, as well as the other people I wrote about in Then It Fell Apart without telling them beforehand,” Moby wrote Saturday, after having previously pushed back against Portman’s denial.
