‘Far worse than last time’ Massive flooding in Ellicott City leaves a man missing, again devastates historic area

Urbanization and geography aided flooding
Destroyed cars remain stranded Monday in Ellicott City, two years after another flash flood devastated the area.

ELLICOTT CITY, MD. Eddison “Eddie” Hermond was told by a friend to pop over to a restaurant in Ellicott City on Sunday for the owner’s birthday party. As they celebrated, the rainstorm outside morphed into a relentless downpour, fueling what soon became a river that flooded buildings and dislodged parked cars. When a woman came into La Palapa Grill & Cantina and said her cat was stranded in a nearby pet store, Hermond, a sergeant in the National Guard, offered to help. “He’s that kind of guy,” said his close friend, Kenneth Josepha, a State Department analyst from Northern Virginia. Authorities said Hermond, 39, of Severn, Md., was swept away during the flood while trying to help the woman find her cat. He remained missing on Monday. The sudden and widespread flooding, which prompted a state of emergency declaration from Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, was a frustrating, all-too-soon sequel to a similar storm in the summer of 2016 that left two people dead. “It really is hard for us to be down here for a second time, seeing the same thing over again,” said Lt. Jeff Carl, of the Howard County Fire and Rescue Services. “It’s a deja vu feeling.” Once again, many storefronts and buildings up and down the historic downtown were severely damaged, including homes and businesses that had only recently recovered from the flooding two years ago. Since then, officials have tried to insulate Ellicott City from another pounding. But they said Monday that only 30 percent of a flood mitigation project initiated after the previous flood had been completed. Simon Cortes, La Palapa’s owner, said his restaurant suffered some water damage, but

its hilltop location prevented it from significant destruction. “A f t e r E d die left, I saw a Hermond woman come in later who was frantic,” he said. “She was so frantic because she witnessed Eddie get swept away.” Sally Tennant, owner of Discoveries craft store on Main Street, said she and other residents met with officials a few weeks ago, complaining that development around Ellicott City over the

last 10 years has made the town vulnerable. Sunday was the third major flood since 2011. “The devastation is far worse than last time,” she said. “If they don’t do the mitigation they need to, we’d be idiots to reopen. We might be idiots to reopen anyway.” Howard County officials said they received 1,100 911 calls between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Mojan Bagha, owner of Main Street Oriental Rugs, said it took him three months to fix the damage in 2016. Since then, he’s built

a retaining wall, but water poured into his 120-year-old building anyway. Yet he is optimistic about rebuilding once more. “This is a great community and a great country,” he said. “Like a phoenix, it will rise from the ashes. Let’s be positive. Let’s think how we can rebuild.” Police allowed Bagha inside his shop on Monday, where he saw thousands of dollars of rugs soaked by the storm — which he, too, called, “worse than last time.” MI CH A EL E. Ruined once more, Ellicott City endured an hourslong cloudburst that drowned the town Sunday. A waterlogged weather pattern, Ellicott City’s floodprone geography and climate change all conspired to make this latest flash-flood horror show. The National Weather Service received a gauge report of 8.4 inches falling in Ellicott City. Flash floods are inherently multifactor disasters: Rain falls, and the land surface must process all that water. If the land surface is already saturated (from a month of heavy rain), or is heavily urbanized (in the case of Ellicott City), that water cannot infiltrate — it must run off. The meteorology is just one component. Land surface and the topography are equally critical. Ellicott City sits at the bottom of a topographical funnel, at the confluence of several streams feeding into the Patapsco River. Now add to that acres of impervious land surface: blacktop, concrete, rooftops, channelization, developed areas around the rim of the funnel. Add inches of water in a few hours, and you have a guaranteed recipe for a flood disaster. The 2016 Ellicott City cloudburst was deemed a “thousand-year rain event” in terms of the probability of recurrence. That an event of this magnitude unfolded in the same spot, two years later, is what it is, and statistics be damned. (TWP)

local Officials cite smuggling of strips of drugs inside some reading material MARYLAND Maryland prison officials are limiting access to books for thousands of inmates in staterun facilities in the latest effort to reduce drug smuggling. Inmates may no longer receive books shipped from online retailers or sent by friends and relatives — and instead must purchase reading materials from two prison-approved vendors,
in some cases at a higher cost. The statewide policy comes as federal prisons recently experimented with a similar measure only to rescind it after concerns about making it harder and more expensive for inmates to read. Prison officials in Maryland put the new requirements in place April 25 as a response to the high volume of drugs being trafficked, including in the pages of books. In recent years, officials said they have uncovered thousands of hidden strips of Suboxone, an FDAapproved medication that helps people reduce or quit opiates. The
strips fuel the underground drug market in prisons, said J. Michael Zeigler, a deputy secretary in the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. Sonia Kumar, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union in Maryland, called the state’s new policy an “extreme and irrational response” to the rare occasions when drugs were spirited in through books. “We should be encouraging people in prison to read as much as possible and not turning books into contraband,” Kumar said. The man in the middle of a high-stakes summit
PLASTIC WASTE
EU proposes ban on straws, cotton buds
ASIA In the tug-of-war between the U.S. and North Korea over the tentative summit in Singapore, South Korean President Moon Jae-in is the man in the precarious middle, trying to broker a high-stakes meeting between two unconventional leaders. Moon’s role as a mediator came into sharp focus in the past week, after President Trump canceled the summit in a letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. As Kim sought to reopen talks, he turned to Moon. In less than 24 hours, Moon’s motorcade snaked through traffic to cross the demilitarized zone for a meeting. Then, on Sunday, U.S. officials crossed the DMZ into North Korea for talks to prepare for the potential June 12 summit, even as its fate remained uncertain. The fact that talks resumed a day after the surprise interKorean meeting was viewed by Moon’s supporters as a sign of his increasingly effective role. Moon had pledged during his 2017 campaign to take the “driver’s seat” to achieve denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. His conservative critics, however, say Moon should be reinforcing the U.S.-South Korea alliance rather than acting as a neutral facilitator between North Korea

and the U.S. They also say Moon is setting unrealistic expectations and masking fundamental gaps between the two sides on the definition of denuclearization. Moon’s rapprochement with the North has divided the South Korean government. On Monday, the legislature failed to ratify the “Panmunjom Declaration,” an agreement Kim and Moon signed at a summit in April to seek “a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.” Moon and South Korea’s Democratic Party have sought to guarantee that the agreement becomes law and can be enforced regardless of a change in government. But conservative lawmakers accuse the governing party of using the agreement, which they note is

short on details, for political gain ahead of local elections in June. Moon said Sunday he hopes for an eventual trilateral summit. He described the U.S.-North Korea summit as a key first step in achieving his goal of a formal declaration ending the Korean War. “Every effort I am making now is on one hand to improve inter-Korean relations, and on the other hand, to ensure the success of the North Korea-U.S. summit, which is essential to improving inter-Korean relations,” Moon said. “I hope that if the North Korea-U.S. summit is successful, the declaration of the Korean War will be pursued through the trilateral summit.” MICHELLE YE HEE LEE
The European Union has proposed banning plastic products like cotton buds, straws, stirrers and balloon sticks in an attempt to reduce litter on beaches and ocean beds. The proposal seeks to cut marine litter in half for 10 items and avoid environmental damage estimated at over $250 billion over the next dozen years. EU Vice President Frans Timmermans said the items would not be banned completely, but steps would be taken to have them made out of sustainable materials when possible. The proposal will be assessed by the EU parliament and member states but Timmermans hopes to see results before May 2019. ( AP)

Is Northern Ireland next?
NORTHERN IRELAND Britain’s leaders are facing increasing calls to take action to loosen abortion restrictions in Northern Ireland after the Republic of Ireland’s landmark referendum in favor of doing so, but complex political realities may make quick action difficult. Prime Minister Theresa May is being asked by some legislators and activists to take steps that might lead to liberalization in Northern Ireland now that Ireland has voted overwhelmingly to repeal its constitutional ban. With all ballots counted in the largely Catholic country, election officials reported Saturday that 66.4 percent voted to overturn Ireland’s 1983 abortion prohibition and 33.6 percent opposed the measure. The turnout was 64.1 percent — the third-highest for a referendum vote since the adoption of the constitution in 1937 and the decision to join the European Economic Community in 1972, The Washington Post reported. Once new laws are put in place by Ireland’s parliament, Northern Ireland would be the only region in the U.K. and Ireland

Republic’s decisive vote for abortion has North calling for change, too
to ban abortions. Its strict law prohibits abortion even in cases of rape and cases when the fetus is judged to have a fatal abnormality. Terminations are allowed in England, Wales and Scotland — and will be legal in Ireland by the end of the year if its parliament acts as quickly as national leaders hope. The Irish Cabinet will meet today to discuss what steps to take after Friday’s resounding vote in favor of liberalization.

Man held in Venezuela for 2 years returning to Utah
Ebola vaccinations begin
A Utah man freed this weekend after being held in a Venezuelan jail for nearly two years was scheduled to return to Salt Lake City on Monday night after getting medical care and visiting President Trump in Washington. Joshua Holt traveled to Venezuela in 2016 to marry a woman he met online but soon found himself jailed on suspicion of weapons charges and later branded the CIA’s top spy in Latin America. (AP)
Sarah Wollaston, a member of May’s party who is chairwoman of the Commons Health Select Committee, says she would vote in favor of extending abortion rights to “all women across the whole U.K.” She said a referendum in Northern Ireland might be one way to achieve this goal. Others have made similar proposals, with some Labour Party figures urging May to back up her feminist ideals by taking action.
Officials began vaccinating health workers and others Monday in Bikoro, where Congo’s current Ebola outbreak was first declared at the beginning of May. Congo’s health minister, Oly Ilunga, traveled to oversee the Ebola vaccinations of at least 10 people in Bikoro, where at least five of 12 Ebola deaths have happened. As of Monday, Congo had 35 confirmed Ebola cases, 13 probable and eight suspected. (AP)
Portuguese lawmakers to vote today on whether to allow euthanasia, doctor-assisted suicide
But action in Northern Ireland is complicated by a number of important factors. First, its power-sharing national assembly has been suspended, meaning it is unable to take any action at all. May’s options for direct action are also somewhat limited. Her government’s minority status in Parliament makes her dependent on the cooperation of the Democratic Unionist Party in Northern Ireland, which is opposed to abortion. GREGORY KATZ (AP)

NOBLESVILLE, IND. A suburban Indianapolis teacher who was shot while tackling and disarming a student inside his classroom said Monday that his swift decisions “were the only acceptable actions” to save his seventh-grade students. Jason Seaman, speaking publicly for the first time since the shooting Friday, thanked the Noblesville community for its support and stressed that he wanted the focus to be on badly wounded shooting victim Ella Whistler, 13. School officials said Monday that Ella was making progress recovering at an Indianapolis hospital. Her family has said she was in critical but stable condition following the shooting. Seaman is credited with stopping an armed student who entered his classroom at Noblesville West Middle School. Witnesses said the 29-year-old ex-college football player ran toward bullets as he tackled the student. Seaman was shot three times, according to his brother. “I want to make it clear that my actions on that day, in my mind, were the only acceptable actions I could have done given the circumstances,” Seaman said. WEATHER Subtropical Storm Alberto lumbered ashore Monday on the U.S. Gulf Coast, pelting white sand beaches with blustery winds and stinging rain that kept the usual Memorial Day crowds away. Forecasters warned heavy rain, flash flooding and dangerous surf posed the biggest threats as Alberto’s ragged core made landfall near Laguna Beach in the Florida Panhandle. A few brief tornadoes also were possible in much of Florida and parts of Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami said at 5 p.m. Monday that Alberto was centered about 15 miles west-northwest of Panama City, Fla. With maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, it was moving north at 9 mph. Rough conditions were whipping up big waves off the Gulf Coast, and authorities warned swimmers to stay out of the surf because of life-threatening swells and rip currents. Between four and eight inches of rain could pummel Florida Panhandle, eastern and central Alabama, and western Georgia before the storm moves on. Isolated deluges of 12 inches also were possible as the storm heads inland, threatening heavy rains around the Southeast in the

systems — the storm is expected to steadily weaken. A subtropical storm like Alberto has a less defined and cooler center than a tropical storm, and its strongest winds are found farther from its center. A tropical storm warning is in effect for a stretch of coastline between Aucilla River in Florida’s Big Bend and the Alabama-Florida border. Alberto, the first named storm of 2018, got an early jump on the Atlantic hurricane season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released their hurricane season forecast Thursday in which they call for 10 to 16 named storms, with five to nine hurricanes, a near-normal or above-normal season. PARIS President Emmanuel Macron on Monday lauded as a hero a migrant from Mali who scaled an apartment building to save a child dangling from a balcony, and rewarded the man’s bravery with an offer of French citizenship and a job as a firefighter. “Bravo,” Macron said to 22-year-old Mamoudou Gassama during a meeting at the presidential Elysee Palace, where Gassama also received a gold medal from the French state for “courage and devotion.” Gassama climbed five stories up the apartment building, moving from balcony to balcony, and whisked a 4-year-old boy to safety on Saturday as a crowd below screamed. His actions went viral on social media, where he was dubbed “Spiderman.” “I ran. I crossed the street to save him,” Gassama told Macron. He said he didn’t think twice. “When I started to climb, it gave me courage to keep climbing.” The father of the child was detained overnight for alleged parental neglect, and is to appear in court in September. He left the child alone while he shopped and played Pokemon Go, prosecutor Francois Molins told BFM-TV. The whereabouts of the child’s mother were unclear. Gassama came to France in September to join his older brother. He has authorization to stay in Italy, which is where he landed in 2014 after a trip across the Mediterranean. Immigration outrage Why a story on the U.S. losing track of 1,475 immigrant kids last year is snowballing IMMIGRATION In the past week, outrage about treatment of children taken into U.S. custody at the Southwest border has reached a fever pitch, exploding in a barrage of tweets and calls to action with the hashtags #WhereAreTheChildren and #MissingChildren. Here’s a look at how the story has snowballed.
China grants Ivanka Trump 13 trademarks
since the beginning of the year in that state alone. “The type of devastation that we’re talking about … where a separated mother doesn’t know where her child is for four days, that’s entirely common right now in this administration,” Laura St. John, the group’s legal director, told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes. “ … I’ve seen months where a parent had no idea where their child was after the U.S. government took their child away.” On the same program, Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU’s immigrants’ rights project, told Hayes that the number of separations his group has seen was “unprecedented.” “This is the worst thing I’ve seen in 25-plus years of doing this civil rights work,” Gelernt said. “I am talking to these mothers and they are describing their kids screaming, ‘Mommy, Mommy, don’t let them take me away!’ ”
BUSINESS Ivanka Trump’s brand continues to win foreign trademarks in China and the Philippines, adding to questions about conflicts of interest at the White House. On Sunday, China granted the first daughter’s company final approval for its 13th trademark in the last three months, trademark office records show. The trademarks could allow her brand to market a lifetime’s worth of products in China, from baby blankets to coffins, and a host of things in between. Trump stepped back from managing her brand and placed its assets in a family-run trust, but continues to profit from it. Those global trademarks have drawn the attention of ethics lawyers because they are granted by foreign governments and can confer enormous value. More approvals are likely to come. Online records from China’s trademark office indicate that Trump’s company applied for 17 trademarks on March 28, 2017, the day before she took on a formal role at the White House. The records on Monday showed at least 25 trademarks pending review, 36 active marks and eight with provisional approval. The World Intellectual Property Organization’s global brand database also shows that her company, Ivanka Trump Marks LLC, won three trademarks in the Philippines after her father took office.

In short, yes. During a Senate committee hearing last month, Steven Wagner, an official with the Department of Health and Human Services, testified that the agency had lost track of 1,475 children who had crossed the U.S.-Mexico border on their own (that is, unaccompanied by adults) and subsequently were placed with adult sponsors in the U.S. As The Associated Press reported, the number was based on a survey of more than 7,000 children. HHS officials have argued it is not the department’s legal responsibility to find those children after they are released from the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement. And some have pointed out that adult sponsors are sometimes relatives who already were living in the U.S. and who intentionally may not be responding to contact attempts by HHS.
Were these kids separated from parents at the border? No. The children unaccounted for in last year’s HHS survey all arrived at the Southwest border alone. The government refers to these children as “unaccompanied alien children,” or UACs.
Are kids being taken from their parents after they cross the border into the U.S.?
This month, the Justice Department announced it would begin prosecuting anyone who crossed the Southwest border illegally.
Yes. On May 7, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the Justice Department would begin prosecuting every person who crossed the Southwest border illegally — or at least attempt to prosecute “100 percent” — even if some of them could or should be treated as asylum seekers, as the American Civil Liberties Union has argued. A consequence of this new “100 percent” policy is that children will be separated from their parents as the adults are charged with a crime, even if the adults are seeking asylum and present themselves at official ports of entry. Under federal rules, Immigration and Customs Enforcement transfers unaccompanied minors, and now children of detained adults, to HHS’s Office of Refugee Resettlement within 48 hours of their crossing the border, according to the AP.
What are some issues these
Trump blames Dems In a tweet Saturday, President Trump tried to blame Democrats for “the horrible law that separates children from parents once they cross the Border” — even though there is no such law, and even though it was a policy supported by his administration. “He used DACA kids as a bargaining chip, and it didn’t work,” said Kevin Appleby, the senior director of international migration policy at the Center for Migration Studies, a nonpartisan think tank. “So now he’s using vulnerable Central American families for his nativist agenda. It’s shameless.” (TWP)

BELTWAY BATTLE
Nats stalwarts outplay stars in Baltimore
Today’s game 7:05 p.m., MASN, MASN 2
NATIONALS 6, ORIOLES 0 Whenever the Nationals and Orioles come together, they play under a web of interlocking intrigue that makes the whole relationship hard to define. Rivalries exist, but more between owners and lawyers arguing over shares of TV revenue. Stars collide, but maybe not for much longer. Bryce Harper and Manny Machado both might play elsewhere next season. The future of Beltway baseball will start a new chapter if they do. But for all the talk about Harper and Machado, the gems of the upcoming free agent class and two of the more talked-about players of the last half-decade, neither man leads the Baltimore-Washington area in FanGraphs’ wins above replacement (WAR) over the last three years. That distinction belongs to third baseman Anthony Rendon, whose three-run homer in the third inning of Monday’s
Memorial Day matinee propelled his Nationals to a 6-0 win. They are 30-22 now — a season-high eight games over .500 — and rocketing back into the league’s elite as the Orioles (17-37) plummet helplessly. Averse to attention, Rendon is sometimes an afterthought on a star-studded roster. In terms of production, he’s as good as anyone on the field. After missing a month with a broken toe, he has hit .375 with two homers and four doubles in his past six games. “He doesn’t really miss,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. “And he’s comfortable hitting with two strikes. With that combination, he gives himself a good chance to hit.” Rendon contributed to four of the Nationals’ six runs Monday, crossing the plate on a Matt Adams single to start the scoring in a three-run eighth for the Nats. Similar to Rendon, Gio Gonzalez often flies under the radar

Nationals right-hander Jeremy Hellickson (1-0, 2.13 ERA) makes his return to Baltimore opposite Orioles righty Dylan Bundy (3-6, 4.45 ERA). Hellickson, 31, has been steady for the Nats after seeing his ERA balloon to 6.97 over 10 starts for the Orioles late last season. Bundy, 25, struck out 14 and pitched a complete game in his latest appearance, a 9-3 win over the White Sox last week.
Anthony Rendon, top, hit a three-run homer in the third inning Monday; left-hander Gio Gonzalez, above, lowered his ERA to 2.10 on the season.
compared to teammates. Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg get the attention, but after throwing 72/3 scoreless innings Monday, Gonzalez owns the best ERA (2.10) of the rotation. Gonzalez, 32, has won 85 games and pitched to a 3.43 ERA since joining Washington in 2012. He’s also in the final year of his contract (seven years, $65 million). The Orioles and their star, Machado, provide a perfect foil to the Nationals’ roster, which
can carry Harper when he can’t carry them. Entering Monday, Machado had accumulated 2.6 WAR, among the top 10 in the majors this year. The Orioles as a team had a combined WAR of 1.2, meaning Machado’s teammates were providing negative value. Even as the Nationals’ star, Harper, has struggled — he is hitting .228 after going 0-for-2 with two walks Monday — his club has not stumbled around him. CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)
REHAB ASSIGNMENT
Nats cautious with Murphy in Class AA
After looking sharp at the plate in the first two games of his rehab assignment this weekend, Nationals infielder Daniel Murphy was held out of Monday’s game with Class AA Harrisburg. Murphy, who went 2-for-4 with a home run and six RBIs for the Senators on Sunday, had microfracture knee surgery in October. Washington manager Dave Martinez said Monday that Murphy could return to the majors “fairly soon.” (EXPRESS) Stanley Cup Final: Capitals-Golden Knights Game 1 ended after Express’ deadline

Max Scherzer (8-1, 2.13 ERA) has allowed 11 home runs in 10 career starts against Baltimore. He’ll hope that number doesn’t grow. Rookie right-hander David Hess (2-1, 4.15 ERA) will make his fourth career start for Baltimore after pitching 6⅔ shutout innings against the Rays last week. Keep an eye on Nationals rookie Juan Soto, who was 2-for-4 Monday and is hitting .320. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Haley Warden scored four goals to lead James Madison to a 16-15 victory over Boston College on Sunday in Stony Brook, N.Y., as the Dukes made the most of their first appearance in the NCAA final. Third-seeded JMU (22-1) fended off a late rally by No. 4 BC (22-2) after taking a three-goal lead with 7:02 remaining. Before Sunday, every title since 2004 had been won by powerhouses Northwestern, North Carolina or Maryland. Finals highlight Green’s long road NBA Inside the visitors locker room Sunday night in Boston, the Cavaliers celebrated their 87-79 victory in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals with whoops and applause. Someone turned on music. Even coaches and executives swayed and rapped along. The day Green referenced was when he underwent open-heart surgery to repair an aortic root aneurysm. Green, who grew up in Hyattsville, Md., and played at Georgetown before being picked No. 5 overall in the 2007 draft, was 25 and in the prime of his career when the condition forced him to miss the 2011-12 season. “Each day I give it my all, whether good or bad. Gymnema may curb cravings
Music to your muscles Working up the willpower to walk into the gym is hard enough. Maintaining the energy to stay there is even harder. Your trusty workout playlist can help you stay motivated — if you craft it carefully. “If you can create the association [with music] that you’re feeling great while you’re working out, even if it’s uncomfortable physically, then you’re gonna be more likely to want to go back and do it again,” says Kacey Buderi, who teaches high-intensity Pilates classes at Solidcore. To help us freshen up our workout playlist,

After nearly two years of teaching Pilates at Solidcore’s West End location, Kacey Buderi can recognize the parts of class when people get tired or bored. “Right after we’re done with oblique [exercises], I make sure I have a really upbeat song, or a popular song that I know people will recognize,” she says. “That brings people back in the moment.” She’s also thoughtful about matching songs with workout focus areas. For example, leg workouts get a rap section with an intense, pounding beat because “it helps people feel really badass.” Rather than using a timer, Buderi uses her playlist to keep herself, and the class, on the right pace. “If I know that I have two songs for each leg [workout segment] and they’re each four minutes, then I know I’m keeping people even,” she says. Buderi says using a service like Spotify that lists the duration of playlists and individual songs can help you time and pace your own workout.
Bored of every single song on workout playlists put together by music services? So is Eddie Cook, who teaches at Zengo Cycle. That’s why he heads to SoundCloud when creating new playlists for his classes, which he primarily teaches at the Mosaic District location. “Spotify has more mainstream stuff,” he says. “On SoundCloud, you can find a gem that no one else has.” He hunts for remixes of popular songs: tracks that are familiar enough to get students excited and new enough to keep them interested. Perhaps the most important songs to find are the ones to play during sprints — the bursts of sustained, highspeed pedaling. “I like to use the word banger,” Cook says of the songs. That includes “anything with a good drop to it. The majority of the drops are 30 seconds long.” The remixes he chooses have dramatic drops each minute or so, making them perfect for interval training.
Sometimes music helps you focus on what you’re doing during a workout. Other times, like at the dance fitness class Kazaxe by Azuka-Bom, it’s there to help you forget you’re working out at all. “We want you to be careful about form, but nobody’s watching you,” says Morgan Crooks, one of the dance instructors who teaches in the company’s warehouse-like studio in Springfield, Va. “Just let it all out there.” Kazaxe (which Crooks compares to “Zumba on steroids”) offers a cardio workout with the help of upbeat music — like, REALLY upbeat music. “We definitely speed music up,” Crooks says. For example, one of the more popular songs Crooks and other instructors ramp up is DJ Khaled’s “All I Do Is Win.” “When I hear it on the radio, I go, ‘Why is this song so slow?’” she says. In the Kazaxe studio, a faster beat gets students grooving harder (and sweating more).
Cook’s current favorites: “Be the One” by Dua Lipa (KRANE Remix) “Indian Summer” by Jai Wolf “Litney Houston” by Jae Jae Bootlegs feat. Knife Party
Crooks’ current favorites: “Lucy” by Destra “Safari” by J Balvin “Dangerous Love” by Fuse ODG feat. Sean Paul
Buderi’s current favorites: “I Like It” by Cardi B “Redemption” by Zacari and Babes Wodumo “High School” by Nicki Minaj feat. Lil Wayne

If it feels like your sweet tooth has control of you, there’s an age-old but newly promoted herbal remedy that might help you turn that around: Gymnema sylvestre. Though it’s marketed a bit overexcitedly — one manufacturer claims it can “stop sugar cravings in seconds” — Gymnema leaves have historically been used to reduce blood glucose and decrease sugar consumption. Studies show gymnemic acid molecules are similar to glucose, making them the right fit to occupy the sweet receptors on the tongue and blunt sweet taste. Gymnema is also being studied for its potential in treating diabetes and other metabolic disorders, and early results are promising. ELLIE KRIEGER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

There are plenty of understandable reasons why one’s boyfriend wouldn’t be running to swaddle one’s girlfriend’s sister’s newborn — intimidation and not wanting to intrude among them — and there’s no use (or fairness!) in making assumptions without talking to him. McCain gets the final word HBO’s documentary gives the ailing senator a grandiose farewell
HBO
TV REVIEW Although Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is still with us, the long and boundlessly approving HBO documentary “John McCain: For Whom the Bell Tolls” (which premiered Monday) all but assumes the former-POW-turnedelder-statesman has gone on to his greater glory. The film is clearly intended as a grand farewell, with no mistaking what all the bell-tolling is about, and for whom. An ailing but optimistic 81-year-old McCain opens the film on a note of fearlessness in the face of mortality, sharing his demands for straight talk from the circumspect doctors who diagnosed him last year with an almost certainly terminal brain cancer. From there, this 1-hour, 45-minute film from director Peter Kunhardt (and his collaborator sons George and Teddy Kunhardt) gets down to the business of McCain hagiography, an honest if highly spit-shined effort, in which the senator narrates the highs and lows of his life of service and everyone else gets their last say about the senator. Interviewees include close associates, lifelong chums, fellow GOP-ers, former presidents and across-the-aisle adversaries, as well as McCain’s wife, Cindy, and his ex-wife, Carol, and most of

his children. The family members keep their emotions in check while reminiscing; the politicos, on the other hand, choke up just thinking about McCain in the past tense. The takeaway is that the country is about to lose one
of the last public servants who still knows the meaning of useful compromise and respect for opposing views. Once he’s gone, forget it, it’s over. That, of course, is an overstatement. But you can’t blame people for feeling this way, since

we get daily reminders that Washington has gone to hell. McCain had a front-row seat to the sowing of the demonic seeds of the discord he now bemoans, which in this film is evident, yet inconvenient to the story at hand. McCain’s maverick tendencies are working to ensure that he goes out as a voice of reason and reconciliation, begging for an end to poisonous partisanship. No mention is made of the White House’s current occupant — and that’s fine, except when it further causes a viewer to wonder what sort of film this is. Just a hearty biography? It does adhere to a strict chronology, following young McCain’s military pedigree to his years held captive in Vietnam, then to his re-entry into normal life, a second marriage and a lengthy political career, including two runs for president. Is the film, then, an end-run on the in-memoriam coverage we can expect following McCain’s death? “I’m very sad that he’s going to be leaving us in the next year,” recalls Carol McCain. “It’s heartbreaking. It’s not fair.” There’s a lot of talk like this near the end of the film — pregrieving along with an awkward mix of verb tenses. Here and not here; served, yet still serving; gone, but present. It’s an altogether new form of tribute: Having one’s last word while being able to hear the things everyone will say when you’re really gone. HANK STUEVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
BOX OFFICE HAUL
The domestic box office take of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” over the four-day Memorial Day weekend, landing well below even conservative estimates, which had the film opening in the ballpark of $130 million. Even worse news for “Solo” was how badly it tallied overseas: Failing to gain much traction in such major markets as China ($10 million), the movie grossed only $68 million abroad. “Solo,” which required extensive reshoots, had a reported production budget of more than $250 million. ‘Fourth Estate’ dissects media in age of Trump TV REVIEW President Trump’s election set off a mad scramble among highprofile journalists, book authors and filmmakers who compete to tell the story of American history and experience. Overnight, they all needed an exclusive yet meaningful vantage point. Documentary filmmaker Liz Garbus followed a unique instinct, asking to embed a film crew in the white-hot center of the most elite and most maligned spot in mainstream media: the newsroom of The New York Times. The result, which premiered Sunday on Showtime, is an engrossing four-part documentary called “The Fourth Estate.” Although it is filled with the pulse-quickening journalistic jujitsu one expects — the deadlines, the doggedness, the scoops, the backlash — it is also refreshingly human in scope, stopping more than once to observe the emotional toll on these journalists who are working themselves to the bone. Garbus’ quiet lionization of their efforts will naturally disgust viewers who have fallen in lockstep behind the president’s constant media vilifying. But the series is most compelling when it’s right in there listening in on phone conversations or hovering behind reporters as they rush to file. If you love watching harried wordsmiths dither over changing “fraught” to “dire” to “treacherous,” then this is your jam. H.S.

Cardi B also wary of that Clark Kent guy Cardi B appeared to not realize actor Donald Glover and his rap alter ego, Childish Gambino, were the same person, if a pair of deleted tweets Friday are any indication. “It’s amazing how Donald Glover and Childish Gambino look soo much alike,” she wrote. “I think they secretly the same person.” A few minutes later, Cardi B tweeted again: “Wait, I’m confuse now?!” (EXPRESS)
Eminem responded to rumors he’s dating Nicki Minaj on Sunday after Minaj used Instagram to seemingly break the news they were an item. “How many people in here want me to date Nicki Minaj?” Eminem asked the audience during his show Sunday in Boston. After pausing for the crowd to cheer, he added: “Me too.” Responding later that night to Eminem’s cryptic talk, Minaj tweeted: “LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. The fact that he’s silly & a goof just like me.
