Consumer Confidence Plunges Report: Americans grew gloomier about the economy in May

8[^_dZ j^[ DkcX[hi

Worries about jobs, housing and the stock market rattle consumers, even though gas prices are falling, according to a new report. Americans grew much gloomier about the economy in May, causing a critical measure of consumer conďŹ dence to suffer its biggest decline in eight months and ending a period of steady optimism. The latest ďŹ gures suggest Americans will need to see more encouraging economic signs before their concerns start to dissipate. The Conference Board, a private research group, reported Tuesday that its Consumer ConďŹ dence Index fell to 64.9, down from a revised 68.7 in April. Analysts had expected the index to climb to 70. The May ďŹ gure, which represents the biggest drop since October, when the measure fell about 6 points, is now at its lowest level since January.

Americans are still worried about slow hiring, declining home values, the stock market and a worsening European economy that they fear will negatively affect the U.S. “Consumers were less positive about current business and labor market conditions, and they were more pessimistic about the shortterm outlook, said Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators at the Conference Board.

Consumer confidence is widely watched because consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of economic activity. The consumer confidence measure has zigzagged this year, dropping in January, rising in February and holding nearly steady after that. Analysts were hoping a slight rise in May would give some credence to the idea that the economy is stabilizing. (AP)

Analysts say the inconsistent job market is preventing Americans from being more upbeat. Hiring picked up earlier in the year, but slowed in March and April, possibly indicating that the economy’s momentum faded in early spring. Adding to Americans’ job concerns, the stock market in May is on track for its worst month since last September. The S&P 500 is down 4.6 percent for the month. But on Tuesday, Wall Street seemed to shrug off the report. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 125.86 points, only the ďŹ fth gain this month. MAE ANDERSON (AP)

Mitt Romneywas set to clinch the Republican presidential nomination Tuesday night with a win in the Texas primary, a triumph of endurance for a candidate who came up short four years ago and had to fight hard this year as voters flirted with a carousel of GOP rivals. The former Massachusetts governor was set to reach the nomination milestone with a steady message of concern about the U.S. economy, a campaign organization that dwarfed those of his GOP foes and a fundraising operation second only to that of his Democratic opponent in the general election, President Obama. “That goal is accomplished, but there’s a much bigger goal to

be accomplished and that’s winning the presidency,” said Rich Beeson, Romney’s political director. “So while you can take a certain amount of satisfaction and pride for [Romney] and what he’s accomplished, he’s very resolved to say, ‘Our work isn’t done.’” Romney must now fire up conservatives who still doubt him while persuading swing voters that he can do a better job fixing the nation’s struggling economy than Obama. In Obama, he will face a well-funded

candidate with a proven campaign team in an election that will be heavily influenced by the economy. “It’s these economic indicators that will more or less trump any good or bad that Romney potentially got out of primary season,” said Josh Putnam, an assistant political science professor at Davidson College who writes the political blog Frontloading HQ. Republicans won’t officially nominate Romney until late August. STEPHEN OHLEMACHER (AP)

Outraged Nations Expel Syrian Envoys Move shows ‘disgust’ after massacre in Houla, officials say FWh_i As U.N. officials cited eyewitness accounts of gunmen slaughtering whole families in their homes, Western nations expelled Syrian diplomats Tuesday in a coordinated move against President Bashar Assad’s regime over the massacre of more than 100 people. U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan met with Assad in Damascus to try

to salvage what was left of a peace plan, which since being brokered six weeks ago has failed to stop any of the violence on the ground. Survivors of the Houla massacre blamed pro-regime gunmen for at least some of the carnage as the killings reverberated inside Syria and beyond, further isolating Assad and embarrassing his few remaining allies. “The images were incredibly disturbing,” a Houla resident said Tuesday. “Women, children without heads, their brains or stomachs spilling out.” On Tuesday, the U.N. said most

of the 108 victims of the Houla massacre were shot at close range. The U.N. report indicated that most of the dead were killed executionstyle, with fewer than 20 people cut down by regime shelling. The massacre in Houla could prove to be a watershed moment in the Syrian crisis, which began in March 2011 with peaceful protests inspired by the wave of uprisings sweeping the Arab world. Nearly 15 months later, the country is in many ways unrecognizable from the days before the revolt. Assad, once considered a potential reformer in a region filled

with aging dictators, is a global pariah. A country that once boasted it was the safest in the Middle East is riven with violence. The economy is in tatters. White House spokesman Jay Carney said Tuesday’s coordinated move to expel Syrian diplomats was a signal of the international community’s “absolute disgust” with Assad’s rule. Damascus has remained largely impervious to international condemnation, but Tuesday’s diplomatic squeeze will increase pressure on Syria’s remaining allies, including Russia. ELIZ ABETH A. Workers at the small machinery company had just returned for their first shift after Italy’s powerful and deadly quake earlier this month when another one struck Tuesday morning, collapsing the roof. At least three employees at the factory were among those killed in the second deadly quake in nine days to strike a region of Italy that hadn’t considered itself particularly quake prone. By late Tuesday, the death toll stood at 16, with one person missing. About 350 people also were injured in the magnitude-5.8 quake north of Bologna in Emilia Romagna, which is one of Italy’s more productive regions, agriculturally and industrially. Factories, barns and churches fell, dealing a second blow to a region where thousands remained homeless from the magnitude-6.0 temblor on May 20, which was described by Italian officials as the area’s worst since the 1300s

and left seven people dead. In both earthquakes, the dead were largely and disproportionately workers killed by collapsing factories and warehouses. Inspectors have been determining which are safe to re-enter, but economic pressure has sped up renewed production — perhaps prematurely.

Labor Minister Elsa Fornero suggested the destruction to buildings was out of proportion, considering the magnitude of the quake. “It is natural that the earth shakes,” Fornero said told lawmakers in Parliament’s lower Chamber of Deputies. “But it is not natural that buildings collapse.” (AP)

Fans Line Up to View ‘Godfather’ Hundreds pay final respects to one of D.C.’s ‘greatest assets’ MWi^_d]jed The crowds came out Tuesday to bid a final farewell to D.C.’s favorite musical son, Chuck Brown. The Godfather of Go-Go died

May 16 after being hospitalized for pneumonia. He was 75. Standing next to Brown’s open casket, Mayor Vincent C.Gray called Brown “one of the greatest assets the city has ever had.” Gray ordered that the District flag fly at half staff over city government buildings from sunup to sundown on Thursday, the day of the memorial service for Chuck

Brown, set for the Walter E. Washington Convention Center from 12-3 p.m. At midday, a Howard spokeswoman estimated that 20 people per minute were passing through the theater. They came through in suits and RIP Chuck Brown T-shirts, in fedoras and straw sun hats, shuffling past the open casket.

Periodically, somebody shushed the murmuring crowd. Occasionally, people paid their vocal respects to a man whose concerts were master classes in call-and-response showmanship. “Wind me up, Chuck!” a woman shouted. Still, it was more funereal than festive, as a hushed mix of Brown’s jazz ballads played over the sound system. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Spy Virus Targets Iran BedZed Ira n a nd ot her Midd le Ea st countries have been hit with a cunning computer virus that can eavesdrop on computer users and their co-workers and filch information from nearby cell phones, cybersecurity experts said Tuesday. A nd suspicion immediately fell on Israel as the culprit. The Russian Internet security firm Kaspersky Lab ZAO said the “Flame” virus is unprecedented in size and complexit y, w ith researcher Roel Schouwenberg marveling at its versatility. “It ca n be used to spy on everything that a user is doing,” he said. Computers in Iran appear to have been particularly affected, and Kaspersky’s conclusion that the virus was crafted at the behest of a national government fueled speculation it could be part of an Israeli-backed campaign of electronic sabotage against the Jewish state’s archenemy. T he v i r u s c a n ac t iv at e a computer’s audio systems to listen in on Skype calls or office chatter. It can also take screenshots, log keystrokes and — in one of its more novel functions — steal data from Bluetooth-enabled cell phones. Schouwenberg said there is evidence to suggest that the people

D[m 8h[[Z e\ L_hki The Flame virus is unusually large. Malicious programs collected by the British security firm Sophos averaged about 340 kilobytes in 2010, the same year that Kaspersky believes Flame first started spreading. Flame is 20 megabytes — nearly 60 times that figure. The virus can activate a computer’s audio systems to eavesdrop on Skype calls or office chatter, for example. It can also take screenshots, log keystrokes, and — in one of its more novel functions— suck data from Bluetoothenabled cell phones, turning an infected computer into what Alan Woodward, a professor of computing at the University of Surrey in England, called a kind of “industrial vacuum cleaner.” (AP)

8WYaijeho Stuxnet, the malicious software that disabled centrifuges in an Iranian nuclear plant, revolutionized the cybersecurity field because it targeted physical infrastructure rather than data, one of the first demonstrations of how savvy hackers can take control of industrial systems to wreak real-world havoc. Its creator remains a mystery, but many suspect Stuxnet was the work of Israeli intelligence. Iran claims Stuxnet and other computer viruses have done no serious harm to Iran’s nuclear or industrial facilities. It sees them as part of a campaign by Israel and its allies to undermine its nuclear program. (AP/ T WP) ISTOCKPHOTO

Experts say Israel may be behind an unprecedented, large cyberattack

behind Flame also helped craft Stuxnet, a virus that is believed to have attacked nuclear centrifuges in Iran in 2010. Many suspect Stuxnet was the work of Israeli intelligence. Tehran has not said whether it lost any data to Flame, but a unit of the Iranian communications and information technology ministry said it has produced an anti-virus capable of identifying and removing

Flame from its computers. Researchers not involved in Flame’s discovery were more skeptical of its sophistication than Kaspersky, with Richard Bejtlich of Virginia-based Mandiant saying the virus appeared similar to spyware used by the German government to monitor criminal suspects. Udi Mokady, chief executive of Cyber-Ark, an Israeli developer of information security, said he

believes four countries, in no particular order, have the knowhow to develop so sophisticated a weapon: Israel, the U.S., China and Russia. “It wa s 20 t i mes more sophisticated than Stuxnet,” with thousands of lines of code that took a large team, ample funding and months, if not years, to develop, he said. “It’s a live program that communicates back to its master.

It asks, ‘Where should I go? What should I do now?’ It’s really almost like a science fiction movie.” It’s not clear exactly what the virus was targeting. Kaspersky said it detected the program in hundreds of computers, mainly in Iran but also in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The company would not give details on the victims except to say that they “range from individuals to certain state-related organizations or educational institutions.” Schouwenberg said stolen data was being sent to some 80 different servers, something that would give the virus’ controllers time to adjust their tactics if they were discovered. As for Flame’s purpose, “maybe it’s just espionage,” he said. “Maybe it’s also sabotage.” (AP)

In the great tradition of American sprinting, strong young men run fast and talk even faster. Jerome Singleton Jr. brings the full sprintstar package, from the charming conceit to the stocked résumé. During a recent news conference in Dallas with fellow U.S. athletes, Singleton smiled broadly, tossed humility out the window and let it be known who was in the room. “My name is Jerome Singleton Jr.,” he said into a microphone. “I’m the fastest amputee in the world.” He’s America’s answer to Oscar Pistorius, the widely acclaimed South African sprinter hoping to compete in both the Olympics and Paralympic Games this summer. The way Singleton sees it, he and Pistorius, whom he defeated at the most recent world championships in the 100 meters for below-knee amputees, are going to have one compelling, must-watch showdown at the Paralympics in London.

:_\\[h[dj FWj^i The similarities between the two end at their speed. Pistorius has two prosthetic legs; Singleton, who was born without a right fibula and had his leg amputated below the knee at 18 months, only one. Pistorius has become widely known for his pursuit of a qualifying time in the 400 meters that would secure him a place in the Olympic Games as a member of the South African team. Singleton has no such hope. In the United States, an Olympic qualifying time gets Singleton nowhere, because plenty of ablebodied Americans earn that every four years. With so much competition, Singleton has little hope of ever securing a U.S. Olympic spot. He hopes, someday, merely to qualify for the U.S. Olympic trials. His best time in the 100 is 11.1

seconds; the three U.S. men who win Olympic team slots in the event this summer likely will run below 10 seconds. So, should Pistorius win a place in the Olympic 400 field, Singleton will be waiting for him at the Paralympics, which begin after the Olympics end. “If he goes to the Olympics and does well, I don’t want any excuses when he comes to the Paralympics,” Singleton said. “Don’t say you’re tired.”

8WYaijeho Jerome Singleton Jr.’s victory in Christchurch, New Zealand, last year ended Oscar Pistorius’ seven-year win streak in Paralympic 100 races. Singleton won in a photo finish as both clocked 11.34 seconds. In their previous two meetings, Pistorius edged Singleton by .03 seconds. At the 2008 Summer Games, Pistorius chased Singleton down to win in 11.17. He ran him down again at a Paralympic World Cup in Manchester, England a year later with a victory in 11.13. (T WP)

7 B[] Kf Prosthetic legs have been the subject of controversy in some corners. The world track and field federation (IAAF) originally banned Oscar Pistorius from able-bodied races before the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, contending that his legs gave him a technical advantage. An arbitration panel overturned that decision.Jerome Singleton Jr. said he’s concluded that Pistorius does indeed have an advantage — over runners with only one prosthetic leg.Singleton said his natural left leg helps him explode out of the blocks faster than Pistorius, but the balance Pistorius gains running on two artificial limbs helps him make up ground fast. (TWP)

Singleton, who also played on school teams in baseball and basketball, said he brings hunger to every discipline in which he banks his time. He said his father, Jerome Sr., frequently told him he could use his life to be a warning or an example, and he preferred to be the latter. “I want to be the best,” Singleton said. “I know everyone has invested in me. I’m not going to sacrifice that gift.” Singleton has trained for the last five years with Curtis Frye at the University of South Carolina. Frye said Singleton’s work ethic is like nothing he has ever seen; he called his potential “limitless.” “He doesn’t have a crutch mentality,” Frye said. “That took great mentorship and great parenting. His father and mother are strong people. They never allowed him to handicap himself, and they never allowed him to entitle himself.” AMY SHIPLEY (THE WASHINGTON POST )

U.S. Faces Tough Test Americans tackle Brazil in exhibition game at FedEx Field The U.S. men’s national team passed its first test during the current five-game swing with flying colors, dominating Scotland in every way en route to a 5-1 victory over the weekend. Now, it gets a whole lot tougher. -0+& F$C$ Wed. | ESPN2

The U.S. men welcome world power Brazil to FedEx Field for a friendly Wednesday night. The United States has beaten Brazil just once in 16 tries, a 1-0 victory in Los Angeles in 1998. According to a U.S. Soccer spokesman, more than 55,000 tickets have already been sold for the event featuring Brazil’s attacking stars such as Neymar and Hulk. “[Brazil] is a team that belongs in the best in the world,” U.S. national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. “You can’t get tougher than

that game on Wednesday night.” At a training session at the University of Maryland on Monday, the U.S. welcomed back striker Jozy Altidore — finally released from his club — and attacking star Clint Dempsey — returning to the field following a groin injury. Both players will take fitness tests to compete for a place in the starting lineup against the Brazilians, but even if they don’t start, they should be available to contribute off the bench to an attack that was as potent and dynamic on Saturday as any U.S. team has displayed against European competition in

recent years. Nobody on the United States is expecting things against Brazil to come as easily as they did Saturday night, when Landon Donovan marked his return to the national team for the first time since September with a hat trick. “It’s Brazil. We’ve all played Brazil. We know what playing against them means,” said midfielder Michael Bradley, one of the chief catalysts in the win over Scotland. “We know on our end we’re going to need a really strong effort, but we’re confident.” AVI CREDITOR (FOR E XPRESS)

Serena Williams lost in the first round of a major tournament for the first time, falling to Virginie Razzano of France 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 Tuesday at the French Open. The fifth-seeded Williams was two points from victory nine times in the second set, including leading 5-1 in the tiebreaker. But the 111th-ranked player won six straight points to force a third set, and then took control of the match. “I made so many errors today, which isn’t the game I was playing in the past,” Williams said. “That’s life.”

But she pulled out of her last match in the semifinals of the Italian Open with a bad back. “I didn’t feel anything abnormal,” Williams said Tuesday. “I was 100 percent healthy.” (AP)

Walk to Remember District-bred rockers the Walkmen find Chris Gethard called his first book fulfilment in growing “A Bad Idea I’m About to Do,” which might as well be his mantra. Gethard, older on ‘Heaven’ a storyteller, an improv comic and the host of the bizarre New York public access/Web series “The Chris Gethard Show,” relishes awkward and odd experiences. A former writer for Weird NJ magazine, Gethard used to scour New Jersey for ghosts and urban legends. But that pales in comparison to what the boyish comedian is calling his worst 8o HkZ_ idea yet: walking from =h[[dX[h] Los Angeles to Manchester, Tenn., with no money, no phone and no idea of what he’s getting himself into. Gethard’s endgame is to make it to Bonnaroo by June 7, where he’ll stage “The Chris Gethard Show” live at 2 a.m. Gethard started his 2,000-mile trek Tuesday and, technically, he’s not alone. A camera crew is documenting the trip (on Bonnaroo’s YouTube channel and on Twitter), but they’re not allowed to help — even if he’s in the desert and has no water. Instead, Gethard must rely on the kindness of strangers — 200 of whom have emailed offers to help out. And if he makes it out alive, Gethard at least has a title for his next book: “The Worst Idea I Ever Did.”

7bXkc H[l_[m The Walkmen’s Hamilton Leithauser has always had two distinct singing styles. Sometimes, he’s a red-faced, forehead-vein-bulging howler. This is on the band’s pulse-quickening anthems, which are usually served up two or three per album and will one day serve as the bulk of an awesome greatest-hits collection. The rest of the

time, he’s a dignified drawler. This is on the band’s more atmospheric and dirgier songs, which comprise the majority of one of rock’s most consistent catalogs of the past decade. Hamilton the Howler is rarely present on “Heaven,” the D.C.-bred, New York-based quintet’s sixth album, which means it’s harder to immediately pick out the highlights. But highs and lows are relative here. Comfort and contentment don’t seem like qualities that would define a great rock album, but the Walkmen has proven otherwise. It’s easy to be seduced by the satisfied glow that encompasses each of these 13 songs. The band can still uncork a

A Happy Place After 10 years as a band, the Walkmen finally feel satisfied with their career. “We named the album ‘Heaven’ because we felt it was a very nice and deluded representation of the overall vibe,” singer Hamilton Leithauser told Pitchfork. “It’s big and optimistic and fun and grand. Everybody’s happy doing what they’re doing now. We’ve gotten our crappy little operation into some kind of order.” (E XPRESS)

whopper of a tune, with firecracker drummer Matt Barrick leading the gallop on “The Love You Love,” one of the few tracks on which Leithauser works himself into a frenzy. The title track sounds like a less-ostentatious U2 — a decent description of the band in general — complete with a vague, wellintentioned chorus (“Remember remember / All we fight for”). But most of “Heaven” is the sound of a band that has found what it ’s look i ng for. “So it begins / Another blessed hymn / Walk around the world / Sing-

ing to my girl” begins “Song for Leigh,” a midtempo tune on which the band members sound so perfectly in step with one another, you’d think they’d been playing together since high school. (They have, at the District’s St. Albans in the mid-’90s.) “Line by Line” is a mellow detour, just Leithauser singing over elegantly plucked, echoladen guitar. “How do we know it? / I just know it,” he repeats like a mantra, and he sounds so coolly assured that it’s impossible not to take him at his word. DAVID MALITZ (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Bourdain, who hosts “No Reservations” and “The Layover” on Travel Channel, will also contribute regularly to other programs on the news network. Russian American pianist’s new “What We Saw From the Cheap Seats” is nevertheless a signal achievement, a set of beguiling originals abounding with hooks, humanity and endearing quirks. Foremost in the quirky department, “Oh Marcello” interpolates the tagline from the Animals’ “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” into a campy, mock-classical romp. Restlessly inventive, the track essays almost too many terrific ideas to be contained in a mere three minutes, recalling a less over-the-top Queen or a more freewheeling Paul McCartney. Spektor’s fetching eccentricities aside, there’s at least a handful of radio-ready singles here, thanks in part to the direction of Dr. Dre protege and Eminem producer Mike Elizondo. “The Party” is just what it says, and then some. “May I propose a little toast for all of the ones who hurt the most / For all the friends that we have lost,” Spektor urges over a stately brass arrangement. Summer is nearly year-round in Southeast Texas, so it should be no surprise that the free stuff to see and do in the sprawling metropolitan area of the nation’s fourth-biggest city focuses on the outdoors. These Houston attractions only cost the time and gas to get there.

Since 1958, the 95-foot-long Motor Vessel Sam Houston has been taking visitors on a 90-minute cruise of the Houston Ship Channel, home to one of the world’s busiest ports and among the world’s largest petrochemical complexes. Reservations are required.

The Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet headline an extensive performing arts lineup that’s been using the Miller Theatre stage since the 1920s and now draws nearly a half-million spectators annually to the 7.5-acre site in Hermann Park. Tickets are available early in the day for that evening’s performance, and concert-goers can bring blankets and sit on the grassy hill immediately behind the seats.

Near the Galleria, and in the shadow of the 902-foot Williams Tower, this 64-foot-high semicircular fountain arguably is Houston’s most photographed site. Visitors can stand inside the wall that recirculates 11,000 gallons of water each minute. A night visit delivers an entirely different look and experience.

Banker John de Menil and his wife Dominique, heiress to the Schlumberger oil-field company fortune, over decades amassed a collection of nearly 16,000 art objects that since 1987 has been on display at the Houston museum that bears their name. The collection features pieces by European and American masters plus ancient and modern works from around the world. The museum’s companion Rothko Chapel provides visitors with a tranquil meditative environment that welcomes 60,000 visitors a year. MICHAEL GR ACZ YK (AP)

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You must find the strength to do what has to be done today. Don’t let those who are unwilling stand in your way; you must forge ahead. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Someone may be trying to promote an idea today that goes against what you favor at this time. Stiff competition is in your future. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may not want to spend your time trying to second-guess the competition; rather, do what you can to boost your own game in creative ways. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may find yourself in a position of authority quite by surprise today. Even if you’ve held the reins in the past, things change. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You must employ patience as you subject yourself to the opinions of others today. There are some lessons to be learned, to be sure.

Yesterday’s Solution

Yesterday’s Solution

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Others may scrutinize your record — but you needn’t fear! No one should be able to find anything that can result in a threat.

<EKH H79A JEJ7B Make a 2-7 letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. 7-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You may be thinking along lines that are too narrow and restrictive for your own good. It’s time to broaden your outlook. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You’ll have a chance to do something that surprises even you when all is said and done. A new phase may be beginning.

9ec_Yi

ARIES (March 21-April 19) A valuable challenge is worth repeating today. Take care that you don’t try to embellish a story everyone already knows. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You have a big decision to make about how much or how little you reveal when you are asked to show your hand.

In 2010, there were an estimated 216 million cases of malaria worldwide. Currently, there is no effective malaria vaccine. Healthy adults 18 to 45 years old are needed to participate in a malaria vaccine research study. This study tests if an experimental vaccine is safe and can prevent infection following exposure to the malaria parasite. If the vaccine does not prevent infection and volunteers develop malaria symptoms, they will receive immediate treatment which is curative. Study volunteers will be compensated for their participation, estimated to last between 12 and 52 weeks. To volunteer, call 1-866-833-LIFE (toll-free) or TTY 1-866-411-1010, email vaccines@nih.gov, or visit www.vrc.nih.gov.

It’s ‘Face/Off’ With a Twist! “Battleship” co-stars Brooklyn Decker and Rihanna are “envious of each other’s bodies,” said Decker. “We decided that I’m going to borrow her butt for a day, and she’s going to borrow my breasts.” Decker, who was on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s 2010 swimsuit issue, said last month that “I hate showing off my body. Beckham Deemed Universally Hot

This is the most salacious-looking photo of Wills we could find.

David Beckham’s appearance on the cover of July 2012’s Elle UK magazine marks the first time a solo male has appeared on the periodical’s front. “David Beckham is a national hero,” said editor in chief Lorraine Candy. “He is an icon and Elle is known for featuring icons on its cover. This is a first for us on the newsstand and I believe he is loved by men and women alike.” (E XPRESS)

UNSCANDALOUS

Dej ;l[d 9bei[ je :_hj A new biography of Prince William by royal reporter Penny Junor alleges that William feared marrying Kate Middleton because he thought he would cheat on her. “He had very real worries about whether is was possible to love just one woman,” Junor writes, citing his tumultuous childhood. “He was understandably cautious.” The couple’s breakup in 2007 was initiated by William, says Junor. “What brought him running back was jealousy”: Kate had hit the town, not sat around and moped. Randy Travis is accusing his ex-wife of divulging confidential information about him in order to damage his reputation and career. The accusations were made in a countersuit filed this month. The filings include a copy of a 2011 letter sent to the ex-wife by one of the singer’s lawyers demanding that she “cease and desist from discussing Mr. Travis’ personal and/or business affairs.” (AP)
