JUST ... WHY?
And you thought leaving dairy products in the car was nasty
The backstory here must be incredibly funny — or just sad
Be careful with your aerosol cans. Karmen Ayres of Vancouver, Wash., went to her car last week and found something protruding from the severely cracked windshield. “I thought maybe something fell,” she told KGW-TV. Then she realized the object was a can of hair spray she had left on the back seat. Temperatures that day reached the low 90s and caused the can to explode. “It launched like a rocket,” she said. Polk County, Fla., deputies have found a $25,000, 5-foot swan sculpture that apparently was stolen last week by a naked man. Security cameras at a storage facility showed a naked man squeezing through a gap in the business’s fence. Minutes later, a stolen pickup was seen driving away with the sculpture in back. The driver was later arrested but wouldn’t disclose the swan’s whereabouts. Police then got a tip and found it near a pond. (EXPRESS)

‘400 years is long enough’ Virginia’s ‘first contact’ Indian tribes demand federal recognition
STEPHEN ADKINS, chief of the Chickahominy, one of six Virginia tribes seeking recognition, on a 1614 peace treaty between the tribe and settlers
Nansemond tribes. The six tribes were part of the Powhatan Nation, a confederation of Eastern Virginia tribes that met the first permanent English settlers in America at Jamestown in 1607. The tribes are perhaps best known for Pocahontas, the daughter of Chief Powhatan who, according to legend, saved the life of Capt. John Smith. But the legislation still needs approval from the Senate, which has twice blocked recognition.
Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., who, along with Sen. Mark R. Warner, D-Va., sponsored the bill, hopes it meets a different fate. “We do feel like there has been some slight forward movement,” he said, noting that his bill breezed through the Senate’s Committee on Indian Affairs on the same day its sister bill passed in the House. The legislation wouldn’t make up for centuries of suffering, its proponents admit. But it would enable the tribes to join the 567 already recognized American
Indian and Alaska Native tribes in receiving federal money for housing, education and health care. It would also allow the tribes to claim artifacts, religious objects and ancestors’ remains currently kept in museums. “It’s a matter of pride,” said Adkins, whose tribe has about 850 members. Adkins said he had been lobbying Congress for almost 20 years. “The time is now,” he said. “400 years is long enough.” MICHAEL E. MILLER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

National Zoo officials are hoping to get panda mom Mei Xiang pregnant — again. Officials said they performed two artificial inseminations Thursday on the 18-yearold panda. Officials said they were closely monitoring her for when to do the procedure. That’s because female giant pandas are able to become pregnant for only 24 to 72 hours each year. Officials said Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, the zoo’s 19-year-old male, failed to breed naturally. Mei Xiang has given birth to three surviving cubs. (AP)

VIRGINIA In the summer of 1619, two dozen white men met inside a church in Jamestown, Va., to set tobacco prices and enact prohibitions on gambling and drunkenness. It was the first legislative assembly in America, though the colonists might not have survived long enough to hold it if it weren’t for help from Native Americans. Four centuries later, the descendants of those Indians are demanding that legislators return the favor by finally granting them federal recognition. “The nation owes a debt of gratitude to the native peoples, who provided the environment that helped sustain the settlers,” said Stephen Adkins, chief of the Chickahominy, one of six Virginia tribes seeking recognition. Last week, the House voted in favor of the Thomasina E. Jordan Indian Tribes of Virginia Federal Recognition Act of 2017, which would formally acknowledge the Chickahominy, Eastern Chickahominy, Upper Mattaponi, Rappahannock, Monacan and

Teacher resignations disrupt D.C. classrooms THE DISTRICT Nearly 200 teachers have quit their jobs in D.C. Public Schools since the school year began, forcing principals to scramble to cover their classes with substitutes and depriving many students of quality instruction in critical subjects. The vacancies hit hardest in schools that already face numerous academic challenges, according to data The Washington Post obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. At Ballou High School in Southeast, more than a quarter
of the faculty quit after starting work in August. Many of their classrooms now have long-term substitutes. Dwight Harris, 16, an 11th-grader, said his Algebra 2 class has been chaotic since his first teacher left in January. “No one’s teaching. It’s been like that for months now,” Harris said. “We don’t do anything, so I leave and go to my biology class or English class and go do other work.” Most teachers wait until summer to call it quits, but in DCPS a rising number are leaving during the school year.

Racist flyers posted in Va.; noose found on Mall
In the D.C. system, 184 of about 4,000 teachers — nearly 5 percent — quit from September to midMay. That was a 44 percent increase over the 128 teachers who left in the 2013-2014 school year. DCPS spokeswoman Michelle Lerner acknowledged it is a challenge to lose teachers mid-year. School officials try to fill vacancies as quickly as possible with a full-time teacher, but she said the best time to hire is in the summer. “Having a high-quality teacher in front of every classroom is a huge priority for us,” she said.

Mayor Catherine Pugh says she wants Baltimore to explore removing the city’s Confederate monuments, “following in the footsteps of New Orleans.” Pugh told The Baltimore Sun the city wants to remove the monuments, and could save money by auctioning them off. New Orleans recently removed three Confederate statues and a monument heralding white supremacy. A commission recommended removing a monument to Marylander Roger Taney, the Supreme Court justice who wrote the Dred Scott decision denying citizenship to African-Americans, as well as statues of Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and “Stonewall” Jackson. Instead of removing them, former Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake put up interpretive signs calling them propaganda designed to falsify history. (AP)

Racist flyers were found on utility poles and car windows in Alexandria, prompting an investigation. The flyers with racist messages targeting African-Americans and immigrants were found over the weekend in the Del Ray neighborhood. Both incidents come weeks after someone hung bananas with racist messages from nooses around American University. (AP) TRANSPORTATION
Lawsuits likely settled in Metro smoke incident A federal judge has dismissed more than two dozen lawsuits against Metro and D.C. over an electrical malfunction that caused a train to fill with smoke. The plaintiffs asked for the 25 cases to be dismissed. That means they likely have reached a settlement with Metro and the District outside of court. One passenger was killed and more than 80 were sickened during the 2015 malfunction, which was the first fatality on the Metro system since a 2009 crash that killed nine people. Man charged with drawing and buying people’s blood
One suspect shot, 2 sought in attempt to rob ATF agents
A federal judge on Friday tossed out two life sentences for sniper Lee Boyd Malvo and ordered Virginia courts to hold new sentencing hearings. In his ruling, U.S. District Judge Raymond Jackson said Malvo is entitled to new sentencing hearings after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that mandatory life sentences for juveniles are unconstitutional. Malvo was 17 when he was arrested in 2002 for a series of shootings that killed 10 people and wounded three over a three-week span in Virginia, Maryland and D.C. His accomplice, John Allen Muhammad, was executed in 2009. (AP)
Authorities said a Maryland man was paying people to let him draw their blood and stored the blood in large quantities in an abandoned apartment in D.C. Khoa Hoang Nguyen, 43, was charged with practicing registered nursing without a license. The report says officers saw “habitual substance abusers” standing in front of an apartment building Wednesday, and some were talking about being paid to give blood. Inside one of the apartments, a woman told police she and Nguyen had drawn blood from 20 people that day. Nguyen also had a ledger with an additional 205 names. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)
Authorities were searching for two suspects in an attempted robbery of three undercover federal agents in Baltimore. Police said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents were in plain clothes, sitting in a pickup truck Friday afternoon in West Baltimore, when two of three suspects tried to rob them. Police said a federal agent shot one of the suspects. The other would-be robber and a third suspect got away. Police said a loaded Taurus .44 Magnum with an 8-inch barrel was recovered from the man who was shot. That man was hospitalized and expected to survive. (AP/TWP)

France’s Macron blasts Russia’s ‘lying’ media
NEW RESEARCH
STEPHANE DE SAKUTIN (VIA AP)
French President Emmanuel Macron, right, speaks to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday in the Galerie des Batailles at Versailles Palace.
“Russia Today and Sputnik … behaved as organs of influence, of propaganda, of lying propaganda,” he said. Macron was the first Western leader to speak to Putin after the Group of Seven summit over the weekend, where relations with Russia were a key topic. His invitation to the Russian leader was a surprise after the tough stance on Russia that Macron took during the French election. Macron’s aides also claimed that Russian groups launched hacking attacks on his campaign. Moscow strongly denied all allegations of meddling in the
French election that Macron won on May 7. Putin on Monday again poo-pooed the idea as unfounded press speculation. Macron also said any use of chemical weapons in Syria — where Russia is propping up the government of President Bashar al-Assad — is a “red line” and would be met by “reprisals” and an “immediate riposte” from France. He did not specify what form such reprisals could take. Macron portrayed the meeting as just a first step in resetting the country’s relations with Russia. “Big things are built over time,” he said. Calorie counting is a useful way to lose weight, but a study suggests a fitness tracker could sabotage your efforts. A team of Stanford scientists said in a paper published last week that the number of calories burned is often incorrect. The least accurate, PulseOn, was off by about 93 percent. The most accurate device, Fitbit Surge, was off by 27 percent. This can create problems: Say a user checks their device and discovers they burned 1,000 calories when they actually burned only 730. They might have an extra glass of wine, thinking they met their goal. Over time, that adds up. Researchers said the margin of error is so large because it is hard for an algorithm to work for a variety of bodies. (TWP)

Why whales hit a growth spurt
Blue whales are the most massive animals to ever exist, but they weren’t always this huge. Scientists reported last week in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B that baleen whales underwent a dramatic size shift over the past 3 million years. In the new study, paleontologists say the body size evolution was triggered by climate changes that made whale food more densely packed and created a souped-up ecosystem where the filter feeders could feast. New president offers blunt criticism during meeting with Putin VERSAILLES, FRANCE Flexing his diplomatic muscles, French President Emmanuel Macron said he had “extremely frank, direct” talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, pushing for cooperation on Syria and against the Islamic State group but also launching an extraordinary attack on two Russian media outlets he accused of spreading “lying propaganda.” The two leaders emerged from their first meeting — discussions at the sumptuous Palace of Versailles that lasted more than an hour longer than planned — clearly still at odds on multiple issues, but also seemingly keen not to let their differences define their fledgling relationship. Macron said he spoke to Putin about LGBT rights in Chechnya and about the rights of embattled NGOs in Russia, vowing he would be “constantly vigilant” on those issues. Putin emphasized the need for closer cooperation between Russia and France, two nucleararmed permanent members of the U.N. Security Council. Speaking with remarkable frankness, Macron tore into the state-funded Russian media outlets Sputnik and Russia Today, for spreading what he said were “serious untruths” during the French election.

GOP candidate prevails despite assault charge Both parties found cause for optimism even as the Republican candidate, facing last-minute assault charges, held onto Montana’s sole House seat on Thursday. At least 4 dead, 25 injured in stampede at stadium
Hundreds of SB4 protesters disrupt legislative session
Police in Manchester issued a picture of the arena suicide bomber holding a blue suitcase and asked anyone who might have seen him with it before the attack to call a confidential hotline. Counter-terrorism squads are trying to re-create Salman Abedi’s movements in the days before he detonated a bomb last week at an Ariana Grande concert, killing 22 people. Police believe Abedi had the suitcase with him at two locations in Manchester. Police said the suitcase was not used in the attack and don’t believe it poses a risk to public safety, but are asking people to call police immediately if they find it. (AP)
Thousands of fans trying to force their way into a stadium for a soccer championship stampeded in panic when police fired tear gas Sunday, leaving at least four people dead. A pregnant woman lost her fetus and was among another 25 people who were injured, authorities said. A spokesman for University Teaching Hospital said the victims died from suffocation and multiple broken bones from being trampled. The stampede happened at the National Stadium in Honduras’ capital for the game between Motagua and Honduras Progreso, officials said. Police said the match appeared to have been oversold. (AP)
Hundreds of protesters opposing Texas’ tough new law against ”sanctuary cities” launched a demonstration Monday from the public gallery in the Texas House, briefly halting work and prompting lawmakers on the floor below to scuffle — and even threaten gun violence — as divides over hard-line immigration policies boiled over. Activists wearing red T-shirts reading “Lucha,” or “Fight,” filled hundreds of seats as proceedings began. After 40 minutes, they began to chant, drowning out the lawmakers below. The law, “Senate Bill 4” or SB4, allows police to inquire about a person’s status during routine interactions. (AP)

The belittler in chief
Trump prefers management style in which even compliments can come with a bite Embarrassing Comey When President Trump decided to fire FBI director James Comey, he sent Keith Schiller, his former head of security, to deliver the message at FBI headquarters. But Comey was visiting a Los Angeles field office and ultimately found out in embarrassing fashion — in public, from television, in full view of his staff. As Comey was delivering a speech to FBI field employees, he initially laughed as news flashed across the TV screens that he had been fired. The FBI director assumed he was being pranked and had to be told by his team that the headlines were no joke. (TWP)

POLITICS White House press secretary Sean Spicer was giddy at the thought of meeting Pope Francis during President Trump’s first trip abroad, telling acquaintances that for him, a devout Catholic, the moment would fulfill a bucket-list dream. But when the White House finalized the lucky list of staff and family members who would accompany Trump into his private audience with the pontiff at the Vatican last week, Spicer’s name was nowhere to be found. Enduring public humiliation has become a defining characteristic of Spicer’s tenure in the White House, yet being excluded from the papal visit still stunned his colleagues, many of whom expressed pity for him. In Trump’s White House, aides serve a president who demands absolute loyalty — but who doesn’t always offer it in return. Trump prefers a management style in which even compliments can come laced with a bite, and where enduring snubs and belittling jokes, even in public, are part of the job. Allies say the president’s quips are simply good-natured teasing, part of an inclusive strategy meant to make even mid-level staff members feel like family. But others consider Trump’s comments pointed reminders that he is in charge — barbs from the boss that keep aides on guard and off-kilter, and can corrode staff morale. Trump sometimes refers to his 45-year-old chief of staff, Reince Priebus, as “Reince-y,” a diminutive nickname that some aides and outside rivals recount with gleeful relish. The president also frequently reminds Priebus that when “Access Hollywood” tapes emerged during the campaign
on which Trump could be heard boasting about groping women without their consent, Priebus urged him to drop out of the race. The president has described House Speaker Paul Ryan, RWis., as a “Boy Scout” — a dig that the lawmaker joked he chose to take as a compliment even though “I’m not sure he meant it that way.” During the transition, Trump would make a point of noting that Vice President-elect Mike Pence’s crowds paled compared to his, teasing that even his
daughter Ivanka and son Eric attracted more attention, said two people familiar with the comments, which they considered demeaning. (Pence offered a similar quip on the campaign trail.) The White House says that Trump is simply joking with his staff, part of a warm, familial leadership style that makes everyone feel included. “President Trump has a magnetic personality and exudes positive energy, which is infectious to those around him,” Hope

Hicks, a White House spokeswoman, said in a statement. “He is brilliant with a great sense of humor … and an amazing ability to make people feel special and aspire to be more than even they thought possible.” Critics say the president often demeans those in his orbit, a tendency they say reflects a broader fragility beneath his bluster. “Trump is so deeply insecure that not even becoming president of the United States quenched his need to make others feel small to build himself up,” said Tim Miller, a former spokesman for an antiTrump super PAC. “Choosing to work for him necessitates a willingness to be demeaned in order to assuage his desire to feel like a big, important person.” Trump’s management style — whether good-natured ribbing or withering comments, depending on one’s perspective — dates to his days as a Manhattan real estate developer, when he enjoyed operating in an environment of competing factions. Now, he has transplanted that executive philosophy into his White House.
FOREIGN RELATIONS Chancellor Angela Merkel cautioned Monday against seeking “simple answers” to complex global issues, a day after suggesting that Europe’s relationship with the U.S. had shifted significantly following NATO and G-7 meetings with President Trump that produced disappointing results. The comments at an election rally Sunday in Bavaria, where Merkel stressed that “we Europeans must really take our destiny into our own hands,” were seen as acknowledgement from Europe’s most powerful leader of the changing dynamic of trans-Atlantic ties. Merkel’s remarks came after a Group of Seven summit at which the Europeans couldn’t get Trump to express support for the 2015 Paris Agreement that aims to slow global warming. Trump tweeted that he would make his “final decision” on the Paris accord this week. “The times in which we can fully count on others are somewhat over, as I have experienced in the past few days,” Merkel said Sunday. Her comments suggest she now sees U.S.-German relations as “pragmatic and transactional,” said Sylke Tempel of the German Council on Foreign Relations. “[Merkel] feels there is a turning point — trans-Atlantic relations won’t be the relations we’ve seen over the last decades,” Tempel said. Kelly defends back-channel diplomacy NATIONAL SECURITY The Trump administration argued over the weekend that backchannel communications are acceptable in building dialogue with foreign governments, part of an effort to minimize fallout over White House adviser Jared Kushner’s reported discussion at a Russian diplomatic compound about creating a secret conduit to the Kremlin. But some former administration officials on Sunday criticized the use of such secret channels, especially during a presidential transition, saying they could send a confusing message. Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly, who represented the Trump administration on Sunday public affairs shows, characterized the reports as “a good thing.” “It’s both normal, in my
opinion, and acceptable,” Kelly said on ABC News’ “This Week.” “Any way that you can communicate with people, particularly organizations that are maybe not particularly friendly to us, is a good thing.” But foreign policy experts and former officials said that such a request of the Russians would be inappropriate unless carefully coordinated with the Obama administration, which was in office at the time. They said any secret communications could have left Kushner vulnerable to manipulation by Russian officials. The Washington Post reported Friday that Kushner discussed the possibility of setting up secret and secure communications between the Trump transition team and the Kremlin during a December 2016 meeting with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Kushner’s meeting with Kislyak was not initially disclosed when Trump’s son-inlaw sought a security clearance. “If you’re going to create a

back channel that relies solely on the Russian communications and apparatus, that’s a really serious issue,” said Mark Lowenthal, a former assistant CIA director. “That’s extremely dangerous.” The meeting with the Russian ambassador occurred when Kushner was not yet a government employee, and the effort’s secrecy gave the appearance that he and other senior Trump aides were not sharing their moves with the Obama administration.
Several Democrats, including Sen. Richard J. Durbin (Ill.) and Sen. Cory Booker (N.J.), called for additional probing. And the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Adam Schiff (Calif.), suggested a review of Kushner’s security clearance. “If [he wasn’t truthful], there’s no way he can maintain that kind of a clearance,” Schiff said. IT failure causes three days of chaos for British Airways
Thunderstorms and strong winds buffeted Moscow and surrounding areas Monday, killing 11 people, Russian officials said. Most of the fatalities were caused by falling trees. Another 70 people were injured, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. The gusts damaged cars and disrupted train service and electricity supplies in some areas. Flights at local airports were delayed. Travelers on British Airways faced a third day of delays and cancellations Monday, though most long-haul services were resumed, after a colossal IT failure over the weekend caused chaos for thousands of passengers. BA canceled all flights from Heathrow and London’s Gatwick Airport on Saturday after the outage, which it blamed on a power-supply problem. Nearly 600 flights were grounded Sunday. (AP)

N. Korea may be testing rivals, not technology NORTH KOREA North Korea’s latest missile test Monday may have had less to do with perfecting its weapons technology than with showing U.S. and South Korean forces in the region that it can strike them at will. South Korean and Japanese officials said the suspected Scud-type short-range missile flew about 280 miles before landing in Japan’s maritime economic zone, setting off the usual round of condemnation from Washington and the North’s neighbors. It’s the latest in a string of test launches by North Korea as it seeks to build nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles that can reach the U.S. mainland, a drive that puts North Korea high on the list of foreign policy worries for Japan, Washington and Seoul. North Korea already has an arsenal of reliable short-range missiles. While North Korean scientists could be tweaking them, the North tests these shorter-range missiles much less than it does its less dependable, longer-range missiles. This sets up the possibility that North Korea hopes to use the test to show it can hit U.S. targets near and far and emphasize its defiance of U.S.-led pressure on its missile and nuclear programs. South Korea says North Korea has conducted nine ballistic missile tests this year, including one in which four missiles were launched on the same day. FOSTER KLUG AND HYUNG-JIN KIM (AP)

Bryce Harper punches Hunter Strickland in the face after being beaned by the reliever.
Haymakers by the Bay NATIONALS 3, GIANTS 0 Washington and San Francisco were engaged in a perfectly pleasant pitchers’ duel on a perfectly pleasant Memorial Day afternoon when Giants reliever Hunter Strickland decided to revive a two-year-old grudge with a fastball thrown directly at Bryce Harper’s hip. Strickland hit him so hard the ball flew into the air and landed halfway up the first base line, so flush that the intent was clear. Neither man responded responsibly during the Nationals’ eventual 3-0 road win. Harper, who hit two monstrous homers against Strickland in the 2014 playoffs and had not faced him since, answered the belated retaliation quickly. He pointed his bat, dropped it and then reared back as if to fire his helmet at the mound. Fortunately for Strickland, and for Harper in the end, the helmet flew wide.

Daniel Murphy tries to remove Bryce Harper during a bench-clearing fight.
Their punches did not. Both benches cleared in a frenzy that left the Giants’ Michael Morse on the ground after colliding with his own teammate, and Strickland wouldn’t stop. It took four of his teammates to carry him off. By charging the mound, Harper risked injury in the fight, and as of the end of the game, the Nationals had not said whether
he sustained any. That Harper headed to the mound at all will almost certainly garner a suspension. Those consequences will come later, and will be nothing compared to what they might have been had he suffered serious injury. The incident derailed what had been a masterful showing by Tanner Roark, who threw seven

scoreless innings, scattered six hits, and struck out six. Ryan Zimmerman began his road trip with a second-inning home run to left center, his 14th of the season. He hit 15 last year. Daniel Murphy got two RBIs with a double and single. After Roark’s strong start, Oliver Perez and Shawn Kelley worked their way through the eighth. Koda Glover worked a 1-2-3 ninth, his sixth save in six chances, ending the afternoon as quietly as it began. But the 97-mph fastballs Glover mixed with his curve and slider will be forgotten, like the 112 pitches Roark threw, or the one Kelley threw to get out of a jam. The one they will remember was a 97-mph fastball, straight at Harper’s leg, from which both teams will feel consequences for quite some time. CHELSEA JANES

Venus hopes 20th time is the charm FRENCH OPEN Making a record 20th appearance at Roland Garros, Venus Williams is hoping to finally hoist a French Open trophy. Williams has played in the French Open more than any other woman, but has gotten past the quarterfinals only once — when she lost the 2002 final to younger sister Serena. “Is it 20 already? I thought I missed a few, but apparently not,” Williams said with a smile. “It’s always an opportunity, for sure. You know, I want to play the kind of tennis that’s consistent and aggressive, inspired. That’s my goal, really, every match.” Williams turns 37 next month, but is showing no signs of slowing down. She reached her 15th Grand Slam final in January — nearly eight years after her 14th. She lost the Australian Open
final to Serena. Venus Williams will play Kurumi Nara of Japan in the second round at Roland Garros after surviving a scare Sunday to beat Qiang Wang 6-4, 7-6 (3) . Clay is Williams’ least favorite surface, but with several of the top stars out or struggling, this could be her year. Serena is not playing because she is pregnant, while Maria Sharapova’s ranking wasn’t high enough to gain direct entry into the tournament after a 15-month doping suspension. Tournament organizers did not grant her a wild card. World No. 1 Angelique Kerber lost her first-round match 6-2, 6-2 against 40th-ranked Ekaterina Makarova, while thirdseeded Simona Halep is struggling with a right ankle injury. DANIELLA MATAR (AP)

Maryland completes lacrosse sweep COLLEGE LACROSSE The 42-year national championship drought of the Maryland men’s lacrosse team ended at 3:16 p.m. Monday, when the Terrapins celebrated their 9-6 titlegame win over Ohio State with a mosh pit in the south end zone of Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. Wearing simple white uniforms with red block letters and numbers, the kind of old-school threads that the program’s last championship team wore in 1975, the Terrapins stayed on the turf as long as they could to soak up the victory. The win marked a sweep for

were driven to end their frustration. Junior midfielder Tim Rotanz scored three goals and senior attack Dylan Maltz added two for the Terrapins, who used suffocating defense to cause two Ohio State scoring droughts that lasted more than a quarter.

A loss to the Buckeyes (16-5), who were making their first title game appearance, would have been devastating for Maryland. The Terps lost to Ohio State in the regular season in overtime in late April but returned the favor in a one-goal win over the Buckeyes in the Big Ten championship game earlier this month. Maryland had to overcome some early miscues, falling into a 2-1 hole after being largely outplayed by the Buckeyes through the first eight minutes. But the Terrapins tightened the screws defensively and harassed Ohio State’s scorers at every turn. Maryland built up a five-goal cushion and fended off a late charge that brought the Buckeyes to within two goals with 2:25 left.

Sit (or stand) a little taller Modern-day workplace posture can lead to pain. Here’s what you can do about it. WELLNESS Forward head, slumping shoulders, tilted pelvis. Sound like the Hunchback of Notre Dame in 15th-century Paris? Maybe, or just your average Joe and Jane glued to their cellphones and computer monitors in 21st-century Washington or just about anywhere in the world. We’re talking about modernday posture — or lack thereof — and what it means not so much aesthetically, but functionally for the body. “Bad posture can contribute to things like disk herniation, pinched nerves, tingling, arthritic changes in the joints, and tissue getting shorter and tighter,” says Haim Hechtman, a doctor of physical therapy and the co-founder of Point Performance, a physical therapy practice in Bethesda. That sounds painful. Which is what a lot of people feel — pain — before addressing the underlying issues of what it means and feels like to stand upright.
“Bad posture wears down the body faster than it should,” says Ben Fidler, a D.C. personal trainer. The wearing-down can lead to pain as the body fights to compensate for imbalances while remaining as upright as possible. For example, Fidler says, if the head is forward, the muscles in the back of the neck are lengthened, while the muscles in the front are shortened. This means that none of the muscles and other tissues are working at their optimal and most efficient level. Fidler does a posture assessment with new clients and then combines the posture needs with whatever other goals clients might have, such as bigger biceps. But to boil it down, this is what Fidler suggests for improving general posture: Roll the shoulders back and bring the head back to align with the spine. Brace through the core (engaging your abdominals and obliques by pulling air in toward the trunk). Squeeze the gluteus to

create pelvic stability while keeping a neutral lower spine (staying within the natural curvature). To support these posture improvements, Fidler suggests mixing plank and bridge poses into your exercise routine, as well as two-arm rows using a TRX strap. But even with such exercises, if your poor habits are so ingrained that you no longer know what it feels like to stand up straight, improvement is easier said than done. “Our perception of what

neutral or good posture is differs from reality,” Hechtman says, adding that the longer we have poor posture, the harder it is to correct. “The brain gets used to a certain position and perceives that as what ‘upright’ is.” Hechtman says his practice uses ultrasounds to help patients reconnect with their bodies. “The ultrasound allows you to see what the muscles are doing in real time,” he says. Occupational therapist and ergonomics expert Naomi Abrams says that if you’re not going to seek expert help, have a friend take a picture of you at your sitting or standing desk to see how your shoulders align over your hips and where your head is compared with your spine. As for the workspace, she recommends bringing work tools closer to your body. We apparently tend to reach for things such as keyboards, which encourages the forward rolling of the shoulders. I don’t want to add a plus-one for her Q. My fiancee and I have planned a wedding with only a few dozen people and it will be meaningful and not extravagant. My best friend since high school is typically not dating anyone, and wasn’t until a month or two before we sent out our wedding invitation. So, for her, we didn’t say “and guest.” I figured she would be fine alone because she knows my family well and has other friends coming as guests. She is now really into the guy and says it would “mean a lot to her” if she could bring him. Not only does this throw off our plans and cost us more money but this would open the floodgates, and I resent the pressure. Advice? FRUSTRATED Normally with wedding quandaries, behavior starts to get so extreme and polarized so as to create caricatures. But here, to me, a best friend saying that it would “mean a lot to her” is an earnest and heartfelt request that deserves special consideration. I completely understand it’s an inconvenience — your frustration is not in the wrong. But it also wouldn’t be wrong to consider that your close friend who usually doesn’t date
has someone meaningful in her life now, and that goes well with the spirit of celebration. Plus, your wedding seems a great size for this accommodation: not so small that an extra, non-acquainted guest would wreck the vibe, but not so large that any “floodgates” will be more than a trickle. It’s a cost-benefit analysis, and though weddings often call for a hard line, given her closeness to you, I’d encourage some wiggle.
judgmental about overweight people and has never been able to shut up about it. If he sees strangers eating junk food, he comments under his breath, or if I’ve put on weight he finds a way to bring it up. My brother is going through depression and has put on a lot of weight since my father has last seen him. It’s not something that we talk about, but we are all meeting up for a vacation in a month or so, and I want to tell my dad in advance to lay off. But I also don’t think he will and wonder if that will make it worse, like if he decides to say something to my brother beforehand, then my brother will know I said he had put on weight. DAUGHTER OF A FAT-SHAMER
If your dad has behaved this way for years, then the pattern is so ingrained that I’m thinking a heads-up just gives him an extra month to be a jerk, rather than actually making him reflect upon his jerkhood. I would focus on supporting your brother, especially given his depression, and be a human shield from your dad’s nonsense in the actual moment. Practice pointed looks, changing the subject and saying, “Hey, now. I’m not going to listen to that on vacation.” Standing up to him privately once the time comes (has no one done this before?) also seems like a moral imperative. President’s personality echoes that of the Shakespearean ruler PERSPECTIVE Though the Trump era continues to draw comparisons to George Orwell’s “1984” — with Kellyanne Conway sounding much like Big Brother when she posited the existence of “alternative facts” — by now it should be clear that the current administration is nothing like the ruling power of Orwell’s Oceania or, another common claim, Margaret Atwood’s Gilead in “The Handmaid’s Tale.” The repressive governments
of those imagined hellscapes are marked, primarily, not by their vast deception but by their absolute order. The most prominent characteristic of our era, however, is not the monolithic power of one party, but the erratic personality of one man. Every morning, all sides of the political establishment must contend with Trump’s zigzagging proclamations, his grandiose promises, his spasmodic attachments. Consequently, the best literary precedent for what we’re enduring now is the turbulent eruptions of King Lear. In Shakespeare’s tragedy, composed around 1605, we see a kingdom entirely in

striking, both are rulers obsessed with personal devotion. How eerily familiar “Lear’s” opening scene must feel to the Cabinet members and advisers currying favor at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.: “Which of you,” Lear demands, “shall we say doth love us most?” A few dutifully deliver their
unctuous praise, but Cordelia — played for us with touching poignancy by FBI Director James Comey — refuses to take the loyalty pledge and is disinherited. How many of Trump’s supporters have begged him — as Lear’s supporters implored him — “Check this hideous rashness”? But to no avail. Again and again, the president rages into the Twitterstorm. “Fake news!” “When does it end?” “This is a disgrace!” “Blow, winds, and crack your cheeks! Rage! Blow!” And despite advantages and allowances, Trump echoes Lear’s complaint: “I am a man more sinned against than sinning.” Meanwhile, we don’t know how our version of “King Lear” will end. But in the words of Cordelia, “Time shall unfold what plighted cunning hides.” RON CHARLES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You can escape the rut you’ve sunk into, but you’ll have to rely on someone who knows you better than you think. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Issues of trust are likely to arise as someone confronts you with “proof” of wrongdoing that is not at all definitive. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

Others may be doing something you were eager to try yourself at one point, but today you’re not about to let yourself be tempted.
TODAY: It’s seasonably warm and generally partly sunny. A weak impulse passing by may be enough to trigger a few late showers and storms, but they should be spotty. Highs are mostly around 80. A few showers and storms could linger through the evening hours. Otherwise, it’s partly cloudy with lows 60-65.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) What goes on behind closed doors must be protected at all costs; you cannot afford to let some things out of the bag. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) A loved one is willing to go down a very different path with you — but not yet. You will want to take the time to prepare fully.
