Not your ordinary dog’s life THE DISTRICT It’s hardly a dog’s life of just eating and sleeping for President Barack Obama’s pets, Bo and Sunny. The pair of Portuguese water dogs — Bo with his distinctive white chest and front paws, and the all-black Sunny — are canine ambassadors for the White House, so in demand that they have their own schedules. “Everybody wants to see them and take pictures,” Michelle Obama said. “I get a memo at the beginning of the month with a request for their schedules, and I have to approve their appearances.” T he dogs h ave che ered wounded service members, as well as the hospitalized children the first lady visits each year just before Christmas. In a sign of just how recognized Bo and Sunny are, authorities in January arrested a North Dakota man who they say came to D.C. to kidnap one of the dogs. gift from the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, a key supporter of Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. Bo helped Obama keep a promise to daughters Malia and Sasha that they could get a dog after the election. Sunny, nearly 4, came along in August 2013. Bo already had a job as a “helper” to Dale Haney, the head groundskeeper at the White House, which is a national park. “He leaves every morning and he goes down with Dale …

And you’ll see him, and he’s like walking around with them, and looking at the plants,” Mrs. Obama said. “I think he thinks he has a job because he takes it very seriously. So if I go out and see him, he kind of ignores me when he’s with his worker crew people.” The dogs have a pretty nice life. “They can sit on my lap, they sit on my chair, they cuddle with me,” Mrs. Obama said. Presidential pets are always popular and many presidents have kept dogs as companions. President Harry S. Truman famously advised: “If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.” Obama promised last year to “clean things up a little bit” before leaving the White House in January because the dogs “have been tearing things up occasionally.” Mrs. Obama said her fourlegged family members had been nice overall, but she exposed Sunny’s naughtier side. “You know what she does sometimes? She leaves the kitchen and she’ll sneak and she’ll go poop on the other end of the White House,” the first lady said. DARLENE SUPERVILLE (AP)

Are we ready for Metro’s blitz? TRANSPORTATION Hundreds of thousands of D.C.area residents will face major disruptions to their daily commutes after Metro launches its year-long maintenance blitz Saturday. But with less than a week to go before the first crews begin digging out of decades of neglect, much of the region remains unprepared for what’s coming. Despite a flurry of preparations, the sheer scale of potential impacts, the staggered rollout of the repairs and human nature have conspired to leave many fuzzy on the details. “It’s not the sky is falling,” said James C. Dinegar, president of the Greater Washington Board of Trade. But “this is not going to be the stuff we’ve been used to.” Preparedness experts are treating the impending delays like some sort of transit-tinged act of God, using the language of disaster management as they work with businesses on “continuity planning.” “It’s about the backup plan. What are we going to do if a hurricane comes through? How are we going to make sure the business stays afloat? It doesn’t have to be [a] hurricane. It can be the Metro,” said Christina Crue, a crisis manager at the firm Witt O’Brien’s, which is advising the Board of Trade. Many have been in denial. “Oh, no. Oh, no! They can’t do that. They really can’t,” said Vanessa Huggins, who was pressing and curling a retired schoolteacher’s hair at Genesis 1 Hair Galaxy when she learned recently that the nearest two Red Line stations — Rhode Island Avenue and Brookland — would be shut down completely for 23 days this fall. Not just at night, as many have come to expect. All day. Soon, Huggins shifted to the

second stage of Metro grief — calculation — and sought to tally the minutes she’ll lose taking a more roundabout route from her home in Anacostia and waiting for slower buses. It doesn’t look good. “I don’t like idle time like that. I like to keep it moving,” Huggins said. But individual calculations — and broader ones for officials and businesses trying to cope with the closures and singletracking in Metro’s “SafeTrack” plan — are complicated by a lack of information. Metro says estimates for the range of delays that will affect millions of trips “are currently in development.” For now, the transit agency says, “major impact” simply means “very crowded trains” and “significantly longer wait times.” Many officials and employers say they are too busy scrambling on logistics to have a clear idea of how much this all might cost them. Beginning this week, the

system will shut down at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, instead of 3 a.m. The first project, starting Saturday, calls for 13 days of nonstop single-tracking on the Orange and Silver lines between Ballston and East Falls Church. The next phase, starting June 18, includes a 16-day shutdown of service along the Orange, Blue and Silver lines between the Eastern Market station and the Benning Road and Minnesota Avenue stations. The program includes 15 projects. As the launch nears, many are pushing for more information and some are seeking at least a partial reprieve for their residents or firms. Last week, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser sent Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld a five-page letter ticking through a long list of questions and requests for data city officials say they need to prepare for the imminent tumult.

Woman shot in leg Sunday at Green Line’s Anacostia station

“It’s been surprising how people just don’t get that when a station is shut, that means the train doesn’t go through.” JAMES C. DINEGAR, president of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, on the region’s readiness for longterm station closures by Metro

And, with just days before the program is set to begin, Bowser also asked Wiedefeld for key changes. She wants Metro to reconsider the midnight closings on weekends, which will hit “the late-night riders and nighttime workers who support and sustain the District’s economy.” Arlington County officials are

1 killed, 1 wounded Sunday in NE shooting

concerned about the planned Blue Line closure between the Rosslyn and Pentagon stations for 18 days in December, including Christmas Eve, because of the impact on Fashion Centre at Pentagon City. But Wiedefeld has shown little willingness thus far to make such concessions. Political pressure to prioritize expanded service over basic maintenance was one cause of the system’s decline, and Wiedefeld has argued that the time for Band-Aids is over. In written responses to questions, Metro said it has no plans to loosen the midnight closures and can’t accommodate holiday changes. The maintenance push has already been vetted and approved by the Federal Transit Administration, which was given oversight of Metro safety last year after a deadly smoke incident, and addresses concerns raised by the National Transportation Safety Board. The goal of Metro’s intricate schedule is to squeeze three years of work into about a year. “By closing the system at midnight every night and expanding weekday maintenance opportunities, the SafeTrack plan addresses FTA and NTSB safety recommendations, accelerates work to eliminate maintenance backlogs and restores Metro infrastructure to good health,” Metro officials said. Sitting in Huggins’ well-worn chair, customer Tenina Sutherland said it’s a shame what Metro has become. “It just seems ridiculous to shut down. What do you mean you’re shutting down for 23 days? What is that?” she said. But Huggins has moved on to acceptance. She just wants a safe ride. “I’m fine with it. I’m not mad at ’em,” Huggins said. “They have to do what they have to do.” MICHAEL LARIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Motorcyclist dies in crash after Rolling Thunder rally

Post poll on offensiveness of Redskins name criticized

Appeals court allows enforcement of gun law

Virginia State Police said a motorcyclist from Indiana who had participated in Sunday’s Rolling Thunder event on behalf of veterans was killed in a crash shortly after the rally ended. Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said Craig Vanbrunt, 66, died after a crash Sunday on Interstate 66 in Arlington. Geller said that as Vanbrunt approached the Rosslyn tunnel with other motorcyclists, they came upon stopped traffic and he was unable to brake in time. Geller said Vanbrunt, who was wearing a helmet, fell from his bike. He died after being taken to George Washington University Hospital. (AP)

Native American leaders and activists criticized a recent national poll that found nine of 10 Native Americans aren’t offended by the Washington Redskins’ name. On a conference call held Friday by the National Congress of American Indians and the “Change the Mascot” campaign, panelists voiced opposition to a Washington Post poll that surveyed 504 Native Americans, 90 percent of whom said the name doesn’t bother them. National Congress of American Indians Executive Director Jackie Pata said: “This issue is not about polling. This issue is about human rights.” (AP)

A federal appeals court said the District of Columbia can temporarily continue to enforce its strict gun law, despite a lower court ruling that part of the law is unconstitutional. U.S. District Judge Richard Leon ruled earlier this month that a section of the city’s law requiring people who want to carry a gun in public to show a “good reason to fear injury” or another “proper reason” to carry the weapon is likely an infringement on the right to bear arms. The city appealed, and on Friday the federal appeals court for the District temporarily put Leon’s ruling on hold until it can hear further argument. (AP)

A message from Metro Board of Directors Chairman Jack Evans As Chairman of Metro’s Board of Directors, it’s my job to advocate for the sustainability of our transit system. I applaud General Manager Paul Wiedefeld for putting together the SafeTrack rehabilitation plan to tackle three years of critical track maintenance work in the next 12 months and to put the safety of our riders over service and revenue. There is more work to do, as the General Manager has detailed in his Customer Accountability Report (CARe), but the SafeTrack plan is an aggressive first step to address some of our greatest infrastructure problems. At the same time, Metro must address the lack of funding needed to run the system, address safety issues identified by the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Transit Administration, and catch up on deferred maintenance.

While the Metro system serves the federal government day in and day out and provides support for national events such as presidential inaugurations, Independence Day celebrations, visits from heads of state, and major public demonstrations, the federal government does not fund the operation of our system. Metro is governed by a sixteen member Board of Directors that is made of up four members appointed from each of the federal government, Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. As part of that governance, Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia each contribute approximately $300 million per year to fund the operation of the system and subsidize fares, but the federal government does not fund the dayto-day operating of the system.

It’s time for Congress to support Metro’s annual operating budget with an equal $300 million contribution to run the transit system of the nation’s capital and to keep fares low. To further address our funding needs, the region must come together to create a dedicated regional funding source. Whether it’s a sales tax, property tax near Metro stations, gas tax, or a mix, the lack of a dedicated source of funding for Metro is a failure of the region and something we need to remedy as soon as possible. Money alone won’t solve Metro’s problems. But combined with General Manager Wiedefeld’s aggressive focus on improving safety, service, and financial management, we can rehabilitate our current system and build a better transit future for our region.

New Signs Installed at Metrorail ADA Entrances Prepare for major service disruptions beginning June 2016. Metro’s year-long track maintenance plan is out, and the first “Safety Surge” begins June 4 on the Orange and Silver Lines. Fifteen major track work projects planned for the coming year will cause severe service disruptions during weekday rush hours. Riders should expect major service reductions and extreme crowding and delays, and should consider alternative travel options. Get all the details at wmata.com/safetrack. New passenger information displays (PIDs) have been installed at Metro’s Tenleytown, Arlington Cemetery, Smithsonian, Takoma Park, Judiciary Square, and Ballston Stations. The new screens provide alerts and Next Train information at the ADA entrances, something the regular entrances have had for years. The new signage is part of Metro’s CARe initiative to improve station signage and customer information. wmata.com — 202-637-7000 — TTY 202-962-2033

nation+world Ex-dictator’s conviction for his brutal rule is seen as a milestone for Africa SENEGAL Cheers erupted Monday in a Senegalese courtroom as the Extraordinary African Chambers convicted former Chadian dictator Hissene Habre of crimes against humanity and sentenced him to life in prison. It was a conviction 16 years in the making, pushed by human rights activists and the victims of Habre’s brutal 1982-1990 rule, and is a rare case of a former dictator being brought to justice. It is the first trial of a former African ruler in another African country, under the auspices of

the African Union, and could be seen as a new model for justice on the continent. “This verdict sends a powerful message that the days when tyrants could brutalize their people, pillage their treasury and escape abroad to a life of luxury are coming to an end,” said a statement by Reed Brody of Human Rights Watch, who has pursued the case since 2000. For his part, the white-robed Habre appeared to take the news calmly and was escorted out of the courtroom under heavy security, according to the Associated Press. Habre’s attorney said he would appeal the verdict. The trial is significant not just because a former African dictator was successfully prosecuted

the International Criminal Court in The Hague as biased against Africa, but that charge cannot be leveled at Habre’s trial. Supported by the United States and France in his wars against Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi, Habre was accused of killing up to 40,000 people and torturing hundreds of thousands. His secret police were ruthless in seeking out and torturing opponents of the regime. Overthrown by Chad’s current president, Idriss Déby, in 1990, Habre fled to Senegal, where he lived unmolested for years until a campaign by his victims resulted in pressure on Senegal to either try him or turn him over to an international court. Dead and dying staghorn coral, central Great Barrier Reef in May 2016.

The 5 things that stand between busy professionals and dating WORK WORK WORK WORK WORK

Great Barrier Reef sees major die-off Severe bleaching event has killed 35 percent of corals, researchers say ENVIRONMENT We knew this was coming. For months, coral reef experts have been loudly announcing that much of the treasured Great Barrier Reef has been hit by “severe” coral bleaching, thanks to abnormally warm ocean waters. Bleaching, though, isn’t the same as coral death. When symbiotic algae leave corals’ bodies and the animals then turn white or “bleach,” they can still bounce back if environmental conditions improve. The Great Barrier Reef has seen major bleaching, and the expectation has long been that this event would result in significant coral death, as well.

You can’t change your work life, but you can make your free time a lot more exciting. It’s Just Lunch® is the dating service designed for the busy professional.

Now some of the first figures confirming that are coming in. Diving and aerial surveys of 84 reefs by scientists with the ARC Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University in Australia have found that a striking 35 percent of corals have died in the northern and central sectors of the reef. The researchers examined 200,000 corals from Townsville, Queensland, to New Guinea, said coral expert Terry Hughes. The 35 percent is an average of estimates taken from different reef regions. While coral death numbers are far lower to the south, “an average of 35 percent is quite shocking,” Hughes said. “There’s no other natural phenomenon that can cause that level of coral loss at that kind of scale.” CHRIS MOONEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Iraqi forces pushed into the southern edge of Fallujah on Monday, enduring car bombs and sniper fire from Islamic State fighters determined to hold onto the strategic western city. Lt. Gen. Abdulwahab al-Saedi, commander of the government’s offensive, said that forces from Iraq’s army, police and elite Counterterrorism Service launched the assault on southern Fallujah early Monday. 6 dead after river floods Residents of some rural southeast Texas counties braced for more flooding along a river expected to crest at a record level just two years after it had run dry in places because of drought. National Weather Service meteorologists predicted the Brazos River would crest at 53.5 feet today, three feet above the previous record. During four days of torrential rain, six people have died in floods along the river, which runs from New Mexico to the Gulf of Mexico. (AP) BUSINESS

On the ticket with Trump? It’s official: Donald Trump will be the Republican presidential nominee this fall. He crested the crucial 1,237-delegate threshold in North Dakota, taking what was a near-certainty and turning it into a certainty. Now, we can move on to trying to figure out who he will choose as his running mate. Below are The Fix’s top five picks. CHRIS CILLIZZA WASHINGTONPOST.COM MORNING MIX

Newt Gingrich

Mary Fallin

Chris Christie

Bob Corker

Joni Ernst

Former Speaker of the House

Oklahoma governor

New Jersey governor

Tennessee senator

Iowa senator

She isn’t well-known around the country but has the sort of profile — conservative woman with executive experience — that Trump needs. Fallin also spent four years in Congress, which should appeal to Trump, who has said he wants someone who knows how Washington works. Trump made waves last month when he tweeted that former South Carolina lieutenant governor Andre Bauer’s recommendation that he choose Fallin as his running mate was “great advice.”

Christie’s decision to endorse Trump at a time when the establishment of the Republican Party was still very focused on beating the billionaire turned Christie into persona non grata with lots of his old friends. But it also means that Christie has been by Trump’s side longer than any other elected official. And Christie’s tough-guy personality and ability to win in a traditionally blue state likely appeal to Trump. Bridgegate lingers, and Christie’s numbers at home are atrocious, but does Trump really care?

The senator from Tennessee huddled with Trump recently, a meeting that launched 1,000 stories about whether he was the pick. Corker is well-respected in both parties in Washington as the rare politician who actually wants to get things done and who understands the sacrifices necessary to make that happen. Of the five people on this list, Corker would be the one who would make the GOP establishment happiest. But that might also be the reason, of course, that Trump won’t do it.

The senator from Iowa seems to have a very bright political future. Ernst emerged as a surprising star of the 2014 Senate class with a sterling resume (military background, time spent in the state legislature, first woman to represent Iowa in Congress, etc.) and a gift for communicating. She is well-liked by many in the Republican Party and is seen as a fresh face — factors that should appeal to Trump. The question is whether Ernst, just 45, wants to hitch her wagon — and her political future — to The Donald.

He checks many of the boxes that Trump has said he is looking for: someone who knows Washington, understands policy and gets how Congress works. Plus, Gingrich was a relatively early supporter of Trump and has grown close to the real estate mogul. Gingrich’s weaknesses — ego, unfettered ambition, several high-profile marriages and divorces — would likely matter less to Trump than to other presidential nominees since they so closely mirror Trump’s own issues.

Sadness over gorilla’s death turns to outrage The killing of an endangered gorilla Saturday at the Cincinnati Zoo in order to rescue a boy who fell into a dangerous enclosure unleashed an outpouring of grief over the weekend. Within hours, that grief turned to fury as critics questioned the zoo’s decision to kill the endangered 17-year-old gorilla, named Harambe, and called for the boy’s parents to be punished for not adequately supervising their child. A spokesman for the Cincinnati Police Department said they have no plans to charge the parents. A Facebook page called “Justice for Harambe” received more than 41,000 “likes” within hours of its creation. A petition on Change.org asking for legislation that creates “legal consequences when an endangered animal is harmed or killed due to the negligence of visitors” amassed more than 60,000 signatures. The statement from the zoo said that tranquilizing the 450-pound animal was not an option because the child was in “imminent” danger and Harambe might have become agitated. On Sunday, zoo officials raced to quell mounting outrage by posting a lengthy statement on Facebook: “We are heartbroken about losing Harambe, but a child’s life was in danger and a quick decision had to be made.” PETER HOLLEY

In his second season, Joe Ross has a 2.52 ERA, 10th-best in the NL entering Monday.

In the year since his major league debut, the right-hander has demonstrated his value NATIONALS With the Nationals leading 2-1 in the seventh inning Thursday against St. Louis, Joe Ross was in a jam. The Cardinals had two runners on and none out, with Ross approaching 100 pitches on a muggy night in D.C. Rather than replace him with Oliver Perez, who was warming up, manager Dusty Baker let him work. Ross then struck out Yadier Molina and got Kolten Wong to hit into a double play. “I’m sold on Joe Ross,” Baker had said before the 2-1 victory. This Monday will be the oneyear anniversary of Ross’ big league debut. Tonight, he’ll make his 23rd start when the Nationals play at Philadelphia. “I feel like it’s gone by pretty

quickly,” said Ross (4-4, 2.52 ERA). “I’m still trying to work on my tempo, my pitches, my mindset; there’s always something new to pick up on.” Ross, 23, made 13 starts and three relief appearances for the Nationals in 2015. This season, he has seized the opportunity to become a full-time Nationals starter and entered Monday with the lowest ERA in the rotation. Earlier this season, he had a scoreless streak of 19 2/3 innings. His 110 pitches Thursday were a career high. “It’s a lot of fun to watch him pitch, especially at the age he is,” Bryce Harper said. “Being able to come up and do what he did last year and do what he’s doing now — he’s got the stuff

Nats’ pitchers still shine With almost a third of the season gone, Washington’s staff remains one of the best in the majors. Entering Monday, the ERA was 2.99, second to the Cubs’ 2.65. Opponents were hitting just .226 against the Nationals, the third-weakest average in baseball. And the Nats were striking out 3.35 hitters for every one they walked, also third-best in MLB. to be very good one day.” Ross, whom the Nationals acquired from San Diego in the same December 2014 deal that landed prospect Trea Turner, said the biggest difference from a year ago is his familiarity with opposing hitters and his ability

to then attack them accordingly. “I’m starting to build that memory bank,” he said. “I can say, ‘Hey I remember that time he hit the ball 450 feet off this pitch,’ or, ‘I remember getting him out with this pitch,’ so then it’s about combining that knowledge and building my own scouting reports.” He pointed to the potentially game-saving strikeout of Molina last Thursday as an example. “I was just thinking to the last time we played them, I went change-up and he lined it right up the middle for a base hit,” Ross said, “and he had been fouling off some two-strike sliders, so in the seventh I went fastball inside with two strikes, and I think it caught him off guard.” BEN RABY (FOR EXPRESS) SS)

2 Madison Bumgarner Giants, 4-0, 1.05 ERA

The Giants, on a 15-3 streak, were 6-0 in his May starts. He leads a rotation rebuilt with Johnny Cueto (8-1) and Jeff Samardzija (7-3).

Aside from his other-worldly ERA this month, he struck out 65 and walked two. For the season, he has 105 Ks and five walks.

The Tar Heels exult while two Maryland lacrosse players look disconsolate Monday after the Terps lost the NCAA men’s championship in overtime.

UNC beats Terps’ men for title, too LACROSSE After North Carolina’s Chris Cloutier rifled in an overtime goal to beat Maryland 14-13 on Monday in the Division I men’s lacrosse national championship, Terrapins goalkeeper Kyle Bernlohr found a spot behind the net at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia and collapsed on his back. It seemed as if there were 41 years of misery and disappointment pressing down on his chest in that moment. Maryland last won the title in 1975, and it had perhaps its best chance to end the drought Monday, when it entered sudden death with an extra-man opportunity following a wild sequence near the end of regulation. But after Maryland’s scoring attempt p was blocked by North

Carolina goalkeeper Brian Balkam on the first possession of overtime, Maryland committed a penalty of its own to give North Carolina the one-man advantage. Cloutier, who finished with five goals, capitalized by beating Bernlohr in the right pocket of the net to give the Tar Heel men their first national championship since 1991. A day after the North Carolina women’s team beat Maryland 13-7 in the national championship game in nearby Chester, Pa., the Terps’ disappointment grew on Memorial Day. North Carolina became just the second school — along with Princeton in 1994 — to win the men’s and women’s lacrosse titles in the same year. ROMAN STUBBS

Tamaulipas state Attorney General Ismael Quintanilla said a bungle by the kidnappers led to the rescue Sunday of Pulido, 25, a forward for the Greek club Olympiakos and national club veteran. Pulido was taken by four armed people on a highway returning from a party at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Pulido’s

AUTO RACING Even before Alexander Rossi sputtered across the finish line to win the Indianapolis 500, race organizers and IndyCar officials were looking to capitalize on the momentum of the 100th running of the showcase event. They’ve put together a new ad campaign, kicked off a ticket renewal effort and have drivers talking up the series. “It’s time to take that, maximize it, to get these fans, get them excited,” American driver Graham Rahal said. “Get them to re-up on their tickets for next

year. ... Is it going to be as big as this year? Probably not. But I do think we can sustain it.” Topping this year will be tough. A dramatic finish on the first day of qualifying led to James Hinchcliffe’s even more exciting pole-winning run. Organizers later announced they had sold as many as 375,000 tickets and that the race would be televised locally for the first time since the 1950s. The race had more lead changes (54) than caution laps (46) and more than one-third of the 33 starters led at some point.

STUDIES SHOW ...

Smoking may harm your baby’s brain

The Japanese practice of ‘forest bathing’ taps nature’s healing power WELLNESS Over thousands of years of human history, we have effectively become an indoor species. Particularly for those of us trapped in the cubicle life, often the only times we regularly set foot outside are for our daily work commute or to run errands. In 2001, a survey sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that, on average, Americans spend 87 percent of their time indoors and 6 percent in an enclosed vehicle. However, a number of scientific studies emphasize that reveling in the great outdoors promotes human health. Spending time in natural environments has been linked to lower stress levels, improved working memory and feeling more alive, among other positive attributes. In an effort to combat our indoor epidemic and reap these health benefits, a growing number

Walk on the wild side of Americans have become followers of a Japanese practice called Shinrin-yoku. Coined by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 1982, the word literally translates to “taking in the forest atmosphere” or “forest bathing,” and refers to the process of soaking up the sights, smells and sounds of a natural setting to promote physiological and psychological health. The increasing popularity of Shinrin-yoku, particularly in California, echoes the adoption of other east-to-west health trends, such as yoga and meditation. And like these activities, forest therapy can be a guided, paid-for experience or freely performed solo. “I think about where yoga was 30 years ago and where it is today, and I realize that forest therapy is making the same journey toward cultural definition in a way that will mainstream the practice,” said Ben Page, a certified forest therapy guide who founded Shinrin Yoku Los Angeles. Those who practice Shinrinyoku explain that it differs from hiking or informative nature

excursions because it centers on the therapeutic aspects of forest bathing. “Whereas a nature walk’s objective is to provide informational content and a hike’s is to reach a destination, a Shinrinyoku walk’s objective is to give participants an opportunity to slow down, appreciate things that can only be seen or heard when one is moving slowly, and take a break from the stress of their daily lives,” Page said. A 2010 study using data from field experiments conducted in 24 forests across Japan found that subjects who participated in forest bathing had lower blood pressure, heart rate and concentrations of salivary cortisol — a stress hormone — when compared with those who walked

“In the natural setting, people are more relaxed and less stressed.” DAVID YADEN, a research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania’s Positive Psychology Center, on the benefits of “forest bathing”

through a city setting. Studies performed in other countries, such as Finland and the United States, showed similar reductions in tension and anxiety. People on nature walks also tend to engage in less rumination, or negative self-referential overthinking, which has been correlated with depression. Other studies have found an association between Shinrin-yoku and a boost in immune function. Some researchers attribute Shinrin-yoku’s health benefits to substances called phytoncides, which are antimicrobial organic compounds given off by plants. They argue that by breathing in the substances, people achieve relaxation. However, phytoncides only exist in small concentrations out in the field as compared with the amounts given to subjects in laboratory-based studies. David Yaden, a research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania’s Positive Psychology Center, offered another explanation: taking in the sights, sounds and smells of a forest or any type of natural beauty could potentially arouse feelings of awe that have been linked to improvements in certain markers of good health.

Smoking during pregnancy has long been known to carry risks. Now another worry may be added to the list: schizophrenia. A new study, published online last week in the American Journal of Psychiatry, finds that heavy cigarette smoking by a pregnant woman raises the risk of her child developing the severe mental disorder by 38 percent. The research was based on nicotine levels in blood samples of pregnant mothers who gave birth in Finland between 1983 and 1998. Scientists matched the samples against a database of nearly 1,000 cases of schizophrenia and found that heavy smoking was associated with 20 percent of the mothers of children who developed the disorder but only 15 percent of the mothers in the control group. This is a correlation study, so it doesn’t answer whether maternal smoking actually causes schizophrenia in offspring. (TWP)

As for your direct interactions, get specific. When she’s intruding, say, “I appreciate your interest, but I’d rather not get into that right now. How about those Nats?” When she’s refusing to agree to disagree, you suggest it: “Looks like we both feel pretty strongly about this, and we’re not changing each other’s minds. Guess that’s what keeps the world interesting!” Build in some space during your interactions, where you utilize any coping mechanisms you have, from deep breaths to slipping away to text a friend and vent. You also might dig deeper into whether she strikes a particular nerve for a particular reason, which will help you further neutralize her effect on you. ‘Roots’ is still ‘your story’

FILM

Depp’s return to ‘Alice’ flops at the box office Johnny Depp’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass” bombed over Memorial Day weekend, taking in just $28.1 million through Sunday in North American theaters, while “X-Men: Apocalypse” debuted on top with an estimated $65 million. The sequel to Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” had been expected to open above $60 million. (AP)

Remade from the ‘70s, the famous miniseries portraying slavery is more timely than ever

BOSTON

historian Matthew Delmont. “There obviously was a lot of racism in the United States in the 1970s, but by ’76 to ’77 you didn’t see these kind of massive public protests and the consistent organized efforts to make this be front-page news in the way that you’ve seen in the last year or two,” Delmont said. Based on the best-selling 1976 novel, “Roots” begins with the story of author Alex Haley’s 18thcentury ancestor, Kinte, a young man in Gambia who is sold into slavery and whose descendants attempt to fight for their freedom. Producers have touted new research that went into the remake, which makes certain scenes — such as the ones in Gambia — more authentic. The remake puts less emphasis on the white characters and more on its strong female characters. Both versions of “Roots” are difficult to watch. Even if you haven’t seen the original in its

Depicting slavery Other slavery-themed efforts this year strike a more revolutionary tone. “BIRTH OF A NATION”: This film, which received the U.S. Grand Jury Prize at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of Nat Turner, who in 1831 orchestrated the bloodiest slave uprising in American history. It opens in October. “UNDERGROUND”: This WGN America drama, which premiered in March, portrays a group of slaves escaping their Georgia plantation. (TWP)

entirety, there are moments that probably linger in your consciousness — such as Kinte being viciously whipped until he calls himself “Toby,” the name given to him by his slave masters. When Kinte tries to escape, part of his foot is chopped off as punishment (an anecdote Kendrick Lamar refers to in

Rapper Snoop Dogg urges “Roots” boycott: “Let’s create our own s--t based on today”

his song “King Kunta”). There are brutal rapes, lynchings and family separations. Because the original “Roots” aired in an era with only three major networks, it will be impossible for the remake, which will be simulcast on sister networks A&E and Lifetime, to have as big of an impact in terms of sheer numbers. But “Roots” is a forebear to the way we watch television now — primed for discourse, most of which happens on social media. And Burton wants the discussion to be different this time. “What I’m hoping is that this version of ‘Roots’ will be able to cultivate a conversation that is absent the guilt and absent the shame,” Burton said. “The first time around we just had the conversation — it was like having a deep wound that had scabbed over and that scab was just sort of peeled off and everything that was raw was just on the surface.” BETHONIE BUTLER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton is planning a fundraiser in Boston with rocker Jon Bon Jovi. The Clinton campaign says the doors to what it’s calling a summer celebration will open at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Westin Waterfront hotel. CASEY CRAFFORD (HISTORY CHANNEL)

TELEVISION In an era of reboots, you’d think “Roots” would be the one classic that we could agree we don’t need to remake. When it aired on ABC in January 1977, the miniseries drew an estimated 130 million viewers, won nine Emmys and launched an unprecedented national conversation about slavery. So why is the History Channel airing a four-night, reimagined take, which started on Memorial Day? (The series continues at 9 p.m. today through Thursday.) “There is a whole generation of Americans who don’t know this story,” said LeVar Burton, who launched his career playing a young Kunta Kinte in the 1977 version and is an executive producer of the remake. “I believe that if you are alive and in America today, ‘Roots’ is your story.” Burton believes that 2016 is a perfect time for “Roots” to return. Slavery’s dark legacy has resurfaced in debates over removing Confederate monuments and whether Georgetown University owes reparations to descendants of slaves it sold to stay afloat in the 19th century. But “Roots” and other pop-culture depictions of slavery don’t just speak to the past. The Black Lives Matter movement, born in response to the deaths of unarmed black men and women at the hands of police, plus campus protests and Barack Obama’s historic presidency have revealed deep unrest in America — descending from a long history of racial injustice. In some ways, racial tensions are more palpable today than when “Roots” first aired, said

Performing Monday before an enthusiastic crowd in Moscow, the British rock star thanked Putin for inviting him to “discuss some serious issues in Russia, including LGBT and HIV and AIDS.” Putin called John last year to say he’d be willing to meet about any issues that concern the gay rock star. Introducing ‘Maya & Marty’ TELEVISION If you doubt that Maya Rudolph and Martin Short are funny together, just recall their number on the 40th anniversary special of “Saturday Night Live.” Rudolph revived her uncanny impersonation of Beyonce, resplendent in her lace bodysuit, her tresses billowing from a wind machine that threatened to blow Short offstage. Their duet — the first time they had worked together — was a highlight of the February 2015 broadcast. Now these stars of TV and film have partnered for a six-week NBC run that promises to whip up the same level of hilarity.

LISA ROSE (NBC)

Duo will bring back the ‘variety show’ — but did it ever leave?

Martin Short and Maya Rudolph’s new six-week variety show debuts tonight at 10 p.m. on NBC.

Debuting today at 10 p.m., “Maya & Marty” is a variety show whose first outing will welcome guests Miley Cyrus, Larry David, Jimmy Fallon and Tom Hanks, as well as series regular Kenan Thompson. Lorne

Michaels, executive producer of “SNL,” is also the executive producer of “Maya & Marty.” Two years ago, Rudolph headlined a variety special on NBC. Then, as now with “Maya & Marty,” the format faced skepticism. Many observers think of variety shows fondly (thanks to bygone classics like “The Ed Sullivan Show” and “The Carol Burnett Show”), but others consider them passe (supporting this view: Neil Patrick Harris’ “Best Time Ever,” which survived just one cycle last fall). That worry is misguided, Short says: “We’re not trying to bring back a form, because I don’t think the variety form ever went away: ‘America’s Got Talent’ and ‘The Voice’ are variety shows. Jimmy Fallon does a full-fledged variety show every night.” JILL LAWLESS (AP)

@ONCEADEEVA, reacting to viewers’ interest in what appears to be a lesbian couple in the trailer for the Pixar animated movie ”Finding Dory,” the sequel to 2003’s “Finding Nemo,” opening June 17. Released last week, the trailer shows two women pushing a baby in a stroller that is knocked over by an octopus on the loose. If predictions based on the trailer are accurate, this would be the first depiction of a same-sex couple in a film by Disney’s Pixar.

The Swiss philsopher-writer says we should abandon the romantic ideal that “a perfect being exists who can meet all our needs,” and instead take the view that a lasting marriage is about tolerating inevitable compatibility differences and negotiating disagreement.

“I’m a veteran, and I hate hearing ‘Happy Memorial Day.’ ” JENNIE HASKAMP, at washingtonpost.com, writes that many Americans have come to see Memorial Day as merely “the official start of summer,” overlooking its original meaning as “a day to remember our WAR DEAD.” Haskamp, a Marine Corps veteran, writes that instead of seeing the holiday mainly as a celebratory occasion for barbecues, discounts and a day off work, Americans should pause to “take the time to pay homage to the men and women who died while wearing the cloth of this nation you’re so freely enjoying today.”

Depp’s family doesn’t believe abuse claims

He’s in it just to change his name to Collins Nick Jonas confirmed this week that he’s dating actress Lily Collins. “We went out a couple of times,” he told the New York Post. “She is amazing. We have known each other for years, just running in the same circles.” He says he hasn’t met her father, musician Phil Collins, but “I am a huge fan.” He added, “Dating is important, getting to know yourself by meeting different people, seeing what it’s all about.” (EXPRESS)

Johnny Depp’s family is coming to his defense just days after estranged wife Amber Heard filed for a restraining order against him, claiming he has been physically abusive. In an Instagram post Sunday, Depp’s daughter, Lily-Rose, called her father “the sweetest most loving person I know,” but did not specifically reference the allegations. In a letter obtained by TMZ, actress Vanessa Paradis, Lily-Rose’s mother, wrote that the allegations are “outrageous,” adding, “He has never been physically abusive with me, and this looks nothing like the man I lived with for 14 wonderful years.” A judge barred Depp from contacting Heard until a June 17 hearing.
