Hey, Guinness, is there a category for ‘largest sense of entitlement’?
A suspect in a series of armed bank robberies has been captured at a casino. Massachusetts State Police say Joseph Hickson, of Walpole, was arrested at about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday as he gambled at the Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville. Authorities say he’s a suspect in at least four bank robberies in Walpole and Franklin, Mass., as well as Cranston and East Providence, R.I. His car was towed from the slot parlor’s parking lot. (AP)
A man pretending to be a campaign worker for Beto O’Rourke broke into a house in Austin, Texas, and ate a popsicle, the Austin American-Statesman reported Wednesday. The homeowner told police she found James Bradford Gibbon II, 28, eating a popsicle in her kitchen. A neighbor who asked Gibbon why he was lingering in the area said he replied, “campaigning for Beto for president.” Gibbon was charged with burglary. (EXPRESS)

Bunch’s promotion leaves big shoes to fill MUSEUMS The historic appointment of Lonnie Bunch III as secretary of the Smithsonian Institution creates a leadership vacuum at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, where he has been founding director since 2005. Celebrated for its powerful exhibitions and bold programs, the museum has become the Smithsonian’s crown jewel, thanks in large part to Bunch’s vision and leadership. He’ll be a difficult act to follow. Enter Spencer Crew — a guest curator of one of the African American Museum’s inaugural exhibitions and a close friend of Bunch. Crew will step in as interim director this summer as Smithsonian officials begin a national search for Bunch’s permanent replacement. Bunch said the museum is lucky to have landed Crew for the temporary post.

Lonnie Bunch III was named secretary of the Smithsonian Institution earlier this week.
“We have someone who can lead the organization, that can help it continue its fundraising, its programmatic initiatives. I’m very comfortable,” Bunch said. The 19 th a nd newest Smithsonian museum opened Sept. 24, 2016, and continues to attract near-capacity crowds. More than 4 million people have visited its wide-ranging exhibitions, which include galleries
on slavery, segregation, sports, religion and entertainment. The museum’s advisory council is focused on finding an outstanding successor, said Kenneth Chenault, the panel’s chairman. The council has discussed succession plans in recent years, knowing there was a chance that Bunch would leave. “Lonnie gave 14 years. He has built an incredible foundation,” Chenault said. “We want someone just like [him], who was transforming, who could inspire the really terrific people we have at the museum to reach new heights.” Chenault would not share details about the search process or how long it would take. Bunch’s first day as secretary is June 16, but Crew’s exact start date had not been set. The museum will maintain its momentum with Crew, Chenault said. “Spencer understands the Smithsonian, he was heavily involved in the inaugural exhibitions … and he is one of the foremost historians of African American history,” he said. Teachers’ union race heats up EDUCATION The latest Washington Teachers’ Union election is reviving a bitter rivalry as president Elizabeth Davis faces a challenge from Nathan Saunders — the man she ousted from the role in 2013 to win one of the District’s most powerful labor positions. And the campaigns have intensified in the final weeks before the June election after Saunders, a teacher at Eastern Senior High, posted on his campaign website previously unreported details about a drunken-driving charge filed in January against Davis. Votes will be tallied June 17. Davis confirmed Wednesday that she planned to plead guilty on Thursday to DUI charges in Prince George’s County. According to court records, Davis was charged with reckless and negligent driving, driving while under the influence of alcohol and failure to control speed to avoid a collision. Davis was driving on a highway in Prince George’s County at about 2 a.m. Jan. 5, she said, when a speeding car approached. She said she thought the car was

controversial evaluation system known as IMPACT that ties test scores and other student achievement metrics to teachers’ pay and job security. Candidates interviewed by The Washington Post, including Davis, said the evaluation system should be dismantled. Saunders was fired from his job as a teacher at Anacostia High in 2018 after receiving what he claims is a low IMPACT score — retribution, he said, for speaking out against school practices. He sued D.C. Public Schools, and the school system confirmed Wednesday it had reached a settlement with Saunders and reinstated him in February. “I understand what teachers are going through, because it happened to me,” he said. When D.C. Schools Chancellor Lewis D. Ferebee took office this year, he said he wanted to examine the IMPACT system, although he made no commitments. IMPACT has received more scrutiny since a citywide investigation showed that the school system handed out high school diplomas to students who were absent for large portions of the academic year. Davis said she is working with teachers to draft a proposal that the D.C. Council could use to replace IMPACT. PERRY STEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Hogan requests probe of fatal U-Md. outbreak HEALTH Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan is calling on the University System of Maryland Board of Regents to investigate the handling of an adenovirus outbreak last fall on the College Park campus that killed an 18-year-old student and sickened more than 40 others. In a letter Thursday morning to the system’s governing board, Hogan said the circumstances surrounding the November death of Olivia Shea Paregol should be investigated immediately with attention paid to officials who waited 18 days to tell students about the virus. “It appears that, at just about every turn, leaders withheld information instead of being open and honest with the student body,” Hogan, R, wrote. While Maryland President Wallace Loh took “legal and moral responsibility” for the heatstrokerelated death last year of football player Jordan McNair, Loh has denied shortcomings in the university’s response to the virus. “Our approach to reporting, testing, cleaning and communicating about the virus was coordinated with health officials, and exceeded” U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, Loh said in a May 16 statement. Hogan pressed the governing board to review the handling of the adenovirus outbreak, including the response by the student health center, and publicly release its findings. JENN ABELSON (TWP)

NoVa. MakerFaire.com Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton celebrates the endorsement of D.C. statehood by Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md.
July hearing set on D.C. statehood POLITICS House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said Thursday that he wants to see the District become the 51st state, reversing his long-held opposition to D.C. statehood. “Statehood would provide those in our nation’s capital with the best chance of attaining what residents of every other national capital in our fellow democracies enjoy: full representation in their national legislature,” he wrote in an op-ed in The Washington Post. The about-face came hours before D.C.’s top elected officials and advocates gathered at the D.C. War Memorial to cheer their latest victory: Congress will hold a July 24 hearing on statehood — the first in a quarter century. Mayor Muriel Bowser, D, noted that the District has sent 200,000 people to wars throughout history, but those veterans had no vote in Congress. “We are denied a vote on whether we should be going to war in the first place,” Bowser said. “It is a stain on our democracy.” The hearing before the House Committee on Oversight and Reform will focus on legislation filed by Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, the District’s nonvoting representative, to give the District all the rights of the 50 other states. Activists hope the hearing will help them capitalize on recent

With Democrats controlling the House, statehood advocates are confident the bill will pass in the House. It is unlikely to gain traction in the GOP-controlled Senate. COURTESY JAMES GARAMONE
Passengers of a shuttle bus from Huntington to Pentagon get off after it mistakenly arrived at the Anacostia Metro station Tuesday morning.
DC RIDER | KERY MURAKAMI
Befuddled shuttle: Riders get a tour — and lengthy detour Jim Garamone knew right away that something was amiss Tuesday morning when he boarded a shuttle at Huntington that was supposed to be bound for Pentagon station. It was the first workday morning of the summerlong shutdown of six Metro stations, including the one at Huntington. He figured there might be some kinks, as the Academy express bus chartered by Metro left the station at around 7:15 a.m. for what he thought would be a 40-minute ride. But he was imagining bad traffic, not ending up in the wrong state. In the days leading up to the shutdown, Metro had warned there were bound to be problems at first. It delivered, as riders complained about too few shuttles and buses getting lost. But of all this week’s “hiccups,” as Metro put it, the most bizarre was the Huntington shuttle to Pentagon that ended up in Anacostia.
The first sign it was going to be an unusual ride came when the bus quickly pulled over and stopped after leaving the station. “[The driver] said she had to wait for the next bus because, ‘I don’t have directions.’ ” said Garamone, 65, who writes for the Department of Defense’s website, defense.gov. Pretty soon another bus came and Garamone’s bus followed. But he wondered why they were getting on the Beltway. Then one of the passengers shouted out, “‘Hey, that bus is going to New York!’” Garamone’s bus crawled along in the morning traffic, crossed the Potomac on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and headed north on I-295. “I got a real nice tour of Congress Heights,” Garamone said. He was glad to see that the area seemed to be improving, he said, “but I didn’t need the tour when I’m supposed to be at work.” The other bus had
disappeared by now. Garamone, who was sitting in the fifth row of cushioned seats on the charter bus contracted by Metro to help during the shutdown, watched the people in front of him give directions to the nowfrazzled driver, who clearly was from somewhere else and had no idea where she was. “The poor woman,” he said later. “It’s not her fault they didn’t tell her how to go.” Garamone isn’t sure why the bus went to the Anacostia station. He figures that at some point the passengers giving directions decided it was hopeless to try to get to the Pentagon, so they steered her there so they could at least get on a train. Around 8:30 a.m., more than an hour after the journey began, the bus pulled up at Anacostia station. As the passengers got off, the driver had a look of “Oh my God,” Garamone said. Some told her things like “Don’t worry about it. It’ll be better tomorrow.” Others walked away stone-faced, but nobody said anything mean. Another half-hour later, after getting on the train at Anacostia, Garamone walked into work. “I think bemused is the right way to put it,” he said. NBC Washington reported that many of Academy’s drivers had been brought in from Texas and other states.
Red Line trains forced to single-track Wednesday after scooter left on rails in NE D.C.
Academy spokesman Ben Martin didn’t comment when asked where the driver of Garamone’s bus was from, or what exactly happened. “We are working with our drivers daily to ensure that these shuttle buses run as smoothly as possible,” he said. By Wednesday, Metro said it was making some tweaks. Spokeswoman Sherri Ly said Metro had begun using more of its own buses as shuttles. The union that represents Metrobus operators, however, criticized the reassignment of some drivers from their regular routes to shuttles without proper training, saying it compromises both passenger and driver safety. But there did seem to be fewer lost shuttles Wednesday. Back at Huntington the day after the ride to Anacostia, Garamone and other passengers joked about where they’d end up that day. They were relieved that a regular bus with a Metro driver showed up. It got to the Pentagon in 35 minutes. And this time, he said, “the bus stayed in Virginia.” But who knows what the future holds. “If I end up in New York,” he said, “I’ll bring you back a pizza.” Reach Kery Murakami at kery.murakami@washpost.com. Electric scooter catches fire in downtown D.C. TRANSPORTATION A Skip e-scooter burst into flames near Franklin Square in downtown Washington on Thursday morning. The scooter caught fire near the corner of 14th and I streets NW in front of a Compass Coffee shop. Employees at the shop said a woman came in to tell them the scooter was on fire, but they didn’t see how it started. The cause of the fire is not clear, though it appears to have started around the battery pack while the scooter was parked. Skip Scooters said the company is investigating the incident, and is not ruling out the possibility of foul play. The company said it believes this was an isolated case and that its other scooters are safe to ride. “We take these issues seriously,” the company said in a statement. “We are happy that there were no injuries. The incident was limited to the external battery and only caused minor damage to a nearby wall. We currently have no reason to believe that this affects any other vehicles in our fleet. We are investigating all potential causes of the incident, including foul play.” Terry Owens, a spokesman for the District Department of Transportation, which regulates the scooter services, said the agency has been in contact with Skip and the incident is under review. Lawsuit: Census change meant to give GOP edge

TSA updates its policy on cannabis
POLITICS A Republican redistricting expert advocated adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census to give an electoral edge to whites and Republicans, opponents of the move alleged in a court filing Thursday. The filing in Manhattan federal court said a trove of newly discovered documents revealed that Thomas Hofeller, a longtime Republican gerrymandering guru, played a key role in pushing the Trump administration to include a citizenship question on the census for the first time since 1950. The files, which were found accidentally by Hofeller’s estranged daughter, show that Hofeller concluded in a 2015 study that adding a citizenship question to the 2020 Census “would clearly be a disadvantage to the Democrats” and benefit white Republicans in redistricting. Hofeller then pushed the idea with the Trump administration in 2017, lawyers for plaintiffs challenging the question wrote in a letter to U.S. District Judge Jesse M. Furman. Lawyers for opponents of adding the question said the files, found on Hofeller’s computer drives after he died last year, also showed that he contributed vital language to a Justice Department

letter used to justify the question on the grounds that it was needed to protect minority voting rights. In reality, the lawyers argued, the documents show the census change is part of a wider Republican effort to restrict the political power of Democrats and Latino communities. “The new evidence reveals that Dr. Thomas Hofeller, the longtime Republican redistricting specialist, played a significant role in orchestrating the addition of the citizenship question to the 2020 Decennial Census in order to create a structural electoral advantage for, in his own words, ‘Republicans and Non-Hispanic Whites,’ and that
defendants obscured his role through affirmative misrepresentations,” the filing said. The change, announced in spring 2018, seems poised for approval by the U.S. Supreme Court, which heard arguments in April and is likely to rule by July. States, cities and rights groups had sued in New York and elsewhere, arguing that the question would suppress the count of immigrants and strengthen congressional representation and funding for areas where mostly Republicans reside. States with large numbers of immigrants tend to vote Democratic.
The Transportation Security Administration has changed its cannabis policy to allow passengers to travel with some forms of CBD oil and an epilepsy drug derived from weed that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. All forms of marijuana were previously prohibited. On Sunday, TSA updated its “What Can I bring?” guidance under medical marijuana. The new policy includes some CBD oil. Hemp-derived CBD is low in or has no THC, the chemical found in pot that produces a high. The TSA’s new rules still ban other forms of marijuana, including CBD oils that have THC. It’s not clear how agents will tell the difference. (AP)

Rain, tariffs hit farmers MIDWEST Between the country’s trade dispute with China and the seemingly endless storms that have drenched the central U.S., Iowa farmer Robb Ewoldt has had plenty of time to think about whether it’s too late to plant this season, how much federal aid he might get if he does or whether to skip it altogether and opt for an insurance payment. Instead of driving his tractor, he’s driving a truck these days to earn a living while wondering how long it will be before he can return to his fields. “Sometimes I think, what the heck am I doing farming?” he said recently by phone while returning home after hauling a shipment of dry ice to Chicago. “When you owe the bank money, you do some pretty crazy stuff.” Ewoldt is one of thousands of Midwestern farmers facing such decisions as they endure a spring like no other. It started with poor corn and soybean prices falling even further as the U.S. and China imposed new tariffs, and was compounded by torrential rain and flooding that have made planting impossible and killed off crops that were just starting to emerge. Conscious that the trade dispute was devastating American farmers, President Trump promised $16 billion in aid — an increase over last year’s $11 billion in aid — but the promise has only added to farmers’ confusion about how to approach this strange spring. That’s because details about how much money farmers would receive won’t be released until later, to avoid influencing what crops they decide to plant. While there’s a rationale behind keeping the aid details secret, it adds another layer of uncertainty for farmers already guessing about

the weather, future crop prices and how much they would get in insurance payments if they don’t plant a crop. “It’s a take what you can get and keep moving year,” said Todd Hubbs, an agricultural economist at the University of Illinois. “Depending on how the payments and everything break out, each farm is different.” In the 18 states that grow most of the nation’s corn, only 58% of the crop had been planted as of last week — a far cry from the 90% that would ordinarily be planted by that point. In states that grow nearly all of the soybeans, less than half of the normal crop had been planted. Farmers have even taken to Twitter — creating a #noplant19 hashtag — to commiserate and share photos of their swamped fields. For Jeff Jorgenson, 44, it’s an all-consuming question of how much of his roughly 3,000 acres of southwestern Iowa land he can profitably farm. About a
U.S. economy grew at solid 3.1% rate for first 3 months of 2019
“You’re trying to do the algebra equations and figure things out, but you have too many unknowns right now. Nobody has a clue what we’re doing.” ROBB EWOLDT , who farms on about 1,100 acres he rents from relatives near the Mississippi River in Iowa
quarter of it can’t be farmed due to Missouri River flooding, and much of his remaining property has been inundated with rain and water from the neighboring Nishnabotna River. Navigating muddy roads in his pickup truck this week, he tried to figure out whether it would be worth pumping water off his
land or whether that would even be possible. Normally it wouldn’t be worth the effort, but with the prospect that the Midwest’s miserable weather will reduce the nation’s fall harvest, corn and soybean prices have started to rise and planting every acre possible has become more attractive than settling for insurance that would pay roughly half the revenue of a normal crop. “Honestly, 24 hours a day, this is all you can think about,” he said. The deadline for not planting and taking an insurance payment without a penalty varies depending on the state and crop, but the decision time either has passed or is approaching. Hubbs said choosing to opt out, especially when prices are rising, is agonizing for farmers but may be the right choice because of the risk of a poor harvest when planting late in soggy ground and the possibility they won’t be able to harvest the crop before the weather turns cold. nation+world After meeting on trade, he says relationship has ‘never been stronger’ OTTAWA, ONTARIO Vice President Mike Pence said Thursday that the U.S.-Canada relationship has “never been stronger,” less than a year after a trade tiff chilled the allies’ historically warm ties. Pence was in the Canadian capital hoping to build momentum to pass a new trade deal with Canada and Mexico. President Trump recently removed U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada and Mexico, clearing a roadblock to a North American trade deal that his team negotiated last year.
The trade penalties were a sore point in relations that reached a low last summer when Trump called Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “weak” and “dishonest” after the Canadian-hosted Group of Seven summit of major industrial nations. “President Trump and I believe the relationship between the United States and Canada has never been stronger and that is a reflection of his leadership and your leadership,” Pence told Trudeau. Nelson Wiseman, a political science professor at the University of Toronto, called Pence’s comments “laughable.” “Canada, like the Europeans and the Japanese, is waiting Trump out, calculating

reasonably that a new administration will be more grounded and consistent,” Wiseman said. “I don’t expect Trump will ever
again be in Canada as president. So much for strong relations.” The new trade deal , signed in November by the leaders of the three nations, is meant to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement. The pact needs approval from lawmakers in each country, and several key U.S. lawmakers and Canada were threatening to reject it unless the tariffs were removed. Pence vowed the trade deal will be passed this year. “U.S. relations with Canada — as with everybody else — are at best whimsical, and at worst shaky,” said Robert Bothwell, a professor of Canadian history and international relations at the University of Toronto.

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY | A woman throws a flower from the Margaret Bridge on the Danube River in Budapest on Thursday as search teams scoured the waters for 21 people missing after a sightseeing boat with South Korean tourists collided with a cruise ship and sank. Seven people were confirmed dead and seven were rescued, all of them South Koreans, Hungarian officials said. Police took into custody the captain of the cruise ship.

POLITICS New Hampshire, which hasn’t executed anyone in 80 years and has only one inmate on death row, on Thursday became the latest state to abolish the death penalty when the state Senate voted to override the governor’s veto. The Senate vote came a week after the 400-member House voted by the narrowest possible margin to override Republican Gov. Chris Sununu’s veto of a bill to repeal capital punishment. “Now it’s up to us to stop this practice that is archaic, costly, discriminatory and final,” said Democratic state Sen. Melanie Levesque, above. With New Hampshire’s action, 29 states allow capital punishment, but in four of them, governors have issued moratoriums on the death penalty, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. Twenty-one states have abolished or overturned it. New Hampshire’s death penalty applied for only certain offenses: the killing of an on-duty law enforcement officer or judge, murder for hire, murder during a rape, certain drug offenses, or home invasion and murder by someone already serving a life sentence without parole. The state hasn’t executed anyone since 1939, and the repeal bill would not apply retroactively to Michael Addison, who killed Manchester Officer Michael Briggs and is the state’s only inmate on death row. Trump again slams Mueller President erupts after special counsel says he’s not exonerated
Trump denies ordering hiding of USS McCain EVAN VUCCI AND CAROLYN KASTER (AP)
POLITICS President Trump angrily assailed special counsel Robert Mueller’s motives on Thursday, a day after Mueller bluntly rebuffed Trump’s repeated claims that the Russia investigation had cleared him of obstructing justice. The president also offered mixed messages on Russia’s efforts to help him defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 campaign. Early in the day, Trump tweeted he had “nothing to do with Russia helping me get elected.” That was the first time he seemed to acknowledge that Russia tried to help his campaign. Then on the White House South Lawn, Trump told reporters: “You know who got me elected? I got me elected. Russia didn’t help me at all.” Mueller’s report said Russia interfered in the election in hopes of getting Trump elected, but his findings and intelligence officials have stopped short of saying the efforts contributed to Trump’s victory. Trump’s 20-minute eruption underscored that he remains distressed over the probe that has shadowed his presidency for nearly two years, even after Mueller announced his resignation and the closure of his office. Democrats are mulling the possibility of impeachment proceedings. Trump insisted that he’s been

tough on Russia and that Moscow would have preferred Clinton as president. But that’s not what Russian President Vladimir Putin has said. When asked last year in Helsinki whether he wanted Trump to become president, Putin replied: “Yes, I did.” On Wednesday, Mueller, in his first public remarks on the Russia investigation, pointedly rejected Trump’s claims — repeated almost daily — that the special counsel’s investigation cleared him of criminal activity and was a “witch hunt.” Mueller emphasized that he had not exonerated Trump on the question of whether he obstructed justice, but said charging Trump with any crime was “not an option” because

claims that Mueller is “conflicted,” contending that Mueller, who served as FBI director under President George W. Bush, wanted his old job back, but that he had told him no. He said Mueller, a Republican, was “a true never Trumper” and “didn’t get a job that he wanted very badly.” Mueller had been considered for the FBI director position shortly before being named as special counsel. But then-White House chief strategist Steve Bannon has said that while the White House had invited Mueller to speak to the president about the FBI and thought about asking him to become director again, Mueller did not come in looking for a job. POLITICS President Trump and his acting defense secretary distanced themselves Thursday from an order to keep a warship named for the late Sen. John McCain — long a thorn in Trump’s side — out of sight during the commander in chief’s recent visit to Japan. The Pentagon’s acting chief, Patrick Shanahan, said he never authorized attempts to make sure Trump would not see the USS John S. McCain at its home port in Japan and would have his chief of staff investigate. Trump, who long feuded with McCain, told reporters at the White House that he “was not a big fan” of the Arizona Republican “in any way, shape or form.” But, Trump added, “I would never do a thing like that.” “Now, somebody did it because they thought I didn’t like him, OK? And they were well-meaning, I will say,” Trump said, while insisting he was kept in the dark. Three U.S. officials confirmed to The Associated Press that the White House told the Navy to keep the warship named for McCain out of Trump’s sight during his visit Tuesday to a base outside Tokyo. The warship, commissioned in 1994, was originally named for the senator’s father and grandfather, both Navy admirals named John Sidney McCain. Last year, the Navy rededicated the ship to honor the senator as well. LOLITA C. BALDOR (AP)

Bias, who died one day after he was picked second in the NBA draft. “We’re flabbergasted that 33 years later people are still talking about Len Bias,” said his mother, Lonise Bias, who stole the evening with anecdotes — like about Len wanting to marry singer Whitney Houston despite not knowing her. “Len has done more in death than he ever could have done in life. For more than 30 years, I’ve been teaching and sowing seeds for life.” Bias’ death had a profound impact on Walt Williams, who was a rising 16-year-old star at Crossland High. There was never any doubt where the marquee recruit would go. And, halfway through his college career, Williams never thought of leaving when the Terps were hit with NCAA sanctions and other coaches recruited him to transfer. “When [Bias’] passing happened, I wanted to follow in his footsteps,” said Williams, who was the 1980s version of Kevin Durant in Prince George’s

MONUMENTAL SPORTS NEWTWORK
Tony Massenburg played for 12 NBA teams. With every new uniform came a singular thought — could he wear No. 34 in memory of his late Maryland teammate Len Bias? The answer was yes only twice, but the Terrapin wanted to remind fans that Bias was more than just a drug overdose victim whose death shattered the sports world in 1986. “Lessons learned from Lenny were part of my DNA,” Massenburg said. “The work ethic is what I took from him. Without Lenny, I never would have been the player I was.” The book Massenberg wrote with Walt Williams, “Lessons from Lenny,” was featured at a remembrance of the local legend before 250 people Tuesday in College Park. A panel that also included former Maryland coach Gary Williams and former Terps stars Johnny Rhodes and Christy Winters-Scott remembered the legacy of

County basketball. Indeed, Massenburg, Williams and Rhodes often returned to Maryland to improve their successors through summer pickup games. They wanted to return the Terps to national prominence despite no longer playing themselves. In honor of Bias, former players made the program better from the outside. When Maryland
won the 2002 national championship, they all felt the confetti fall onto the court. Maybe today’s youngsters don’t directly know Bias. But his impact resonates through those he inspired. Terps star Keith Booth is now coaching Dunbar High boys basketball in Baltimore, while WintersScott leads South Lakes High girls basketball in Reston. A nephew he never knew is flashing some of Bias’ old moves on the playground. His mother has become a national speaker about not just avoiding drugs, but embracing life. Top-seeded Osaka rallies past Azarenka
D.C. UNITED Chris Odoi-Atsem’s scar on his right pectoral muscle is a physical reminder of a journey he could never forget. The scar stemmed from a port inserted as part of the D.C. United defender’s chemotherapy treatment. As Odoi-Atsem endured four months of taxing sessions to treat Hodgkin’s lymphoma last year, the idea of returning to the field sustained him. That moment arrived Wednesday night: Odoi-Atsem made his first MLS appearance in 14 months, starting and playing 68 minutes in United’s 3-3 draw with the Chicago Fire at Audi Field. “Every day, especially during my chemo treatments, this was sort of my light at the end of the tunnel — coming back to Audi Field, playing an MLS game in front of these fans in this atmosphere,” said Odoi-Atsem, who turned 24 this week. “On rough days, this would get me through.” A Mitchellville, Md., native who played at Maryland, OdoiAtsem was picked by his hometown team in the first round of the 2017 MLS draft and made nine appearances his rookie year. He had logged just 12 minutes

last season when a combination of injuries and puzzling ailments sidelined him. As United made its second-half surge toward the playoffs, Odoi-Atsem found himself processing a diagnosis of stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma. From October through January, he underwent chemotherapy. He was given the all-clear this spring and made a full return to United training. “It’s really been a lot of fun to watch him take these little steps, and this is a special night for him I’m sure,” United coach Ben Olsen said Wednesday. “I think it’s a special night for us, in a small way, of going through

this with him.” Odoi-Atsem likely will return to the bench when first-place United (7-4-5) hosts the San Jose Earthquakes (5-6-2) on Saturday before a three-week break for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. But his comeback already has provided a boost to United’s defensive depth, and a lift to the locker room. “We’ve seen him putting in all of the hard work on the training pitch and in the gym to get back to play,” United captain Wayne Rooney said. “To do so, so quick after going through his treatment, is a testament to him as a person.” THOMAS FLOYD (EXPRESS)
Perilously close to an early French Open ouster for the second time in as many rounds, world No. 1 Naomi Osaka rallied to defeat former No. 1 Victoria Azarenka, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Thursday. The 43rd-ranked Azarenka bolted to a 5-1 lead but had a few hiccups before closing the opening set in 40 minutes. Osaka leveled the match at one set apiece in what proved to be an exceptionally played, 74-minute second set. When the two last met on clay, at Rome in 2018, Osaka needed just 74 minutes for a 6-0, 6-3 rout. LIZ CLARKE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Blues’ unlikely hero asked for one more shot STANLEY CUP FINAL The greatest goal in Boston Bruins history is immortalized in bronze outside TD Garden, an airborne Bobby Orr frozen in celebration of his overtime goal in the 1970 Stanley Cup Final. The iconic image of one franchise’s triumph is another’s tortured history, that overtime defeat just one of the 13 games the Blues had lost on this stage. Forty-nine years and one prophetic restroom chat later, the Blues have their first win in the finals — and fittingly on Boston’s ice — courtesy of an overtime hero less likely than Orr. With two minutes left in the third period Wednesday, Blues defenseman Carl Gunnarsson, above, slapped a shot as hard as he could. The puck beat Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask, then clanged off the post. During the intermission before overtime, Gunnarsson and St. Louis coach Craig Berube stood next to each other at a urinal. “I just need one more chance,” Gunnarsson told Berube. Did Berube believe him? “I liked hearing it,” he said. Three minutes and 51 seconds into OT, Gunnarsson’s shot from the right point again beat Rask, this time falling into the net to deliver the 3-2 win in Game 2, tying the series 1-1 with the next two in St. Louis. Gunnarsson, 32, had never scored a playoff goal in his 10-year career. Now he has the most significant goal in St. Louis hockey history — at least for now. ISABELLE KHURSHUDYAN (TWP)

New rivals take on Godzilla this time around, apparently unaware of the movie’s subtitle.
The nature of the beast
The ‘Godzilla’ reboot’s sequel once again delivers monsters but fails the humans FILM REVIEW “Godzilla,” the 2014 reboot of the classic monster story, was generally well-received, save for quibbles about the human story. Five years later, you might expect the sequel, “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” to have addressed that concern. Does it come out roaring — a balanced mix of fire-breathing action and story that moves you, efficiently, from one kaiju bout to the next? Unfortunately, the movie emits only a serviceable yelp. Gareth Edwards, who directed the 2014 “Godzilla,” was criticized for waiting too long to reveal the titular Japanese movie monster. In contrast, the new film’s director, Michael Dougherty (“Krampus”), seems to revel in wreaking havoc in the kaiju sandbox, showing off every last ability possessed by Godzilla and the other classic movie monsters reintroduced here. But instead of figuring out a compelling story for the non-skyscrapersize characters, Dougherty and co-screenwriter Zach Shields seem to be counting on the fact that you’ll take a bathroom break
Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown play humans in the “Godzilla” sequel.
during the exposition and return in time for the next battle. The premise is this: Monarch, a shadowy cryptozoological agency that studies such ancient, physics-defying monsters as Godzilla, has discovered that more and more of these creatures, known as titans, exist, and that they are entombed in some of Earth’s farthest reaches. As a former Monarch scientist — and the estranged husband of a current one (Vera Farmiga) — Kyle Chandler brings his signature gruff wit to the job of co-parenting a daughter (Millie

‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ (PG-13, 131 min.) DIRECTOR: Michael Dougherty STARS: Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga,

Bobby Brown) and mourning the loss of a son (whose death is shown in flashback). Chandler and Farmiga’s inane actions, contrived in service of the plot
and nothing else, fall apart under close scrutiny. And Brown is underused, delivering shrieks in the face of the story’s twists and turns, but not much more. Ken Watanabe, reprising his role as a scientist, is the only returning actor given anything to chew on. But any fresh emotional weight that his character carries is undercut by the memory of his comically underwritten role in the 2014 film, in which the actor had little to do except pronounce the name “Godzilla” in a Japanese accent. As the film’s subtitle hints, several of these titans — who include flying reptile Rodan and queen of the monsters Mothra — emerge ready to square off in a frenzied free-for-all to crown an alpha. Despite its plot holes, the film delivers thrilling action in spades. But hardcore devotees of the Godzilla mythology might prefer Japan’s most recent liveaction spin: “Shin Godzilla,” a 2016 film that balanced a laser-focused “Veep”-esque story of government buffoonery with jaw-dropping destruction. ‘The Tomorrow Man’ PG-13, 95 min.
The title character in “The Tomorrow Man” is known as a “prepper”: someone who’s planning for the collapse of civilization. If Ed, as a movie hero, is improbable, so is nearly everything about writer-director Noble Jones’ film. It’s primarily a golden-years romance, with ingratiating performances by John Lithgow and co-star Blythe Danner. But many aspects are misconceived, underdeveloped or just plain feeble. ‘Walking on Water’ Unrated, 105 min.
Rather than focus on the engineering and logistics of “The Floating Piers,” filmmaker Andrey Paounov instead trains his camera on the whining that surrounded the fascinating but overcrowded 2016 art installation in Italy. Only the last 10 minutes or so of the film make “Piers” look like something anyone might regret having missed. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

Someone savored my life … FILM REVIEW It’s almost unfair that “Rocketman,” about the rise, fall and rise of Elton John, is being released just months after the Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The films cover roughly the same time period, they feature the same villainous manager and they were even directed by the same filmmaker — which makes comparison inevitable. “Rocketman” audiences need to know going in that they’re in for a completely different approach and aesthetic experience, with a movie that is less traditional biopic than a jukebox musical that feels reverse-engineered for a splashy Broadway makeover. The theatricality and flamboyant style is utterly appropriate for the singer’s own outrageous stage persona, and both director Dexter Fletcher (who finished “Bohemian Rhapsody” after Bryan Singer’s exit) and his star, Taron Egerton, commit to it with an admirable, go-for-broke wholeheartedness. As on point as that choice is, though, it entails sacrifices that may well leave many viewers feeling deprived of the musical and narrative catharsis they crave. To its credit, “Rocketman” teaches the audience how to watch it within its first few minutes, when John — kitted out in a flame-hued phoenix costume, replete with feathers and horns

The flashback-friendly framing device firmly in place, “Rocketman” takes us back to postwar England, where a young Elton John, birth name Reg Dwight (Matthew Illesley), struggles to
‘Rocketman’ (R, 121 min.) DIRECTOR: Dexter Fletcher STARS: Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, Bryce Dallas Howard IN A NUTSHELL: A musical fantasy that tells the life story of Elton John, using reworkings of his songs to chart his rise from shy piano prodigy to international superstar.
make himself understood to an emotionally remote father and an insensitive mother. A rousing production number of “The Bitch Is Back” sets the scene. From there, “Rocketman” becomes a fantasia of dreamlike set pieces, in which John’s greatest hits are used to capture the mood of the moment. The result is a film that feels strangely superficial, even though its conceit is a psychological portrait of an artist excavating his deepest psychological material. While the more open-minded among Elton John fans will welcome the reworkings of his songs, others may find the new orchestrations disorienting. The movie sometimes feels like an oddly joyless and even maudlin affair, as John revisits the darkest points of his life. When he performs “Bennie and the Jets,” one of the 1970s’ most exhilarating rock anthems, it’s reframed as a bitter, angry rebuke. As uneven as “Rocketman” can be, Egerton is consistently good, his singing voice up to the task and his confidence lending him just enough swagger to wear John’s campy costumes with flair. Within a nervy, sometimes dizzying stylistic and chronological hodgepodge — a dash of Bollywood here, a smidgen of magical realism there — Egerton exerts a steadying, singularly charismatic force, skirting glib impersonation to becomes an interpretive instrument in his own right. Egerton is reason alone to see “Rocketman.” It may be Elton John’s story, but this is his song. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Hollywood unites against abortion law
Walt Disney chairman Bob Iger, left, expressed doubts Wednesday that the company would continue filming in Georgia if the state’s highly restrictive abortion law takes hold. “I think many people who work for us will not want to work there,” he told Reuters. Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said this week that the streamer also could reconsider filming in Georgia, and WarnerMedia took a similar stance in a statement Thursday. Spencer brings sadistic fun to horror flick ‘Ma’ FILM REVIEW As a movie villain, the titular mischief-maker of the psychological horror film “Ma” — an unhinged middle-aged enabler whose house becomes Party Central for a gaggle of teens looking for a place to drink illegally — has a hodgepodge of cinematic DNA. Part Annie Wilkes in “Misery,” part Joan Crawford in “Mommie Dearest,” she’s also the spiritual heir of Alex Forrest in “Fatal Attraction” and Mrs. Robinson in “The Graduate.” As rendered by Octavia Spencer, the character of Sue Ann — or Ma, as her underage friends call her after she buys them booze and insists they drink it in her spooky basement — is also entirely herself: original, crazy, yet grounded in the kind of straight-faced acting that Spencer is known for. The movie “Ma,” on the other hand, is not destined for such distinction. Director Tate Taylor (“The Help”) has created a B-movie fright fest that is well aware of — and even seems to revel in — its limitations. “Ma” is, at heart, an overly familiar story of terrorized teens, albeit one that manages to find a few new twists to that tired trope. As the film builds to its absurd, sometimes shockingly violent climax, screenwriter Scotty Landes stuffs a bit too much plot into a tale that just can’t sustain it. But “Ma” can, in the right frame of mind, be great fun. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

‘Rambo: Last Blood’
‘The Goldfinch’
EXPECTED RELEASE: Sept. 20
EXPECTED RELEASE: Sept. 13
SUMMARY: Old Man Stallone seems to be taking a page from Clint Eastwood, going for an elegiac, repentant-man-of-violence, “Unforgiven” kinda vibe with this fourth sequel. But then the trailer gets all testosterone-y and makes clear that Rambo still really gets off on killing people, even if he has to get up off his rocking chair to do it. ADAM SAPIRO (EXPRESS)
SUMMARY: If the 17 shirtless selfies Ansel Elgort added to his Instagram on Tuesday weren’t enough, rest assured — he also makes sure to shed that shirt here. Our first look at this take on the Pulitzer Prizewinning novel also has myriad Oscar bait ingredients. Childhood trauma? Check. Substance abuse? Check. Nicole Kidman? Check. THOMAS FLOYD (EXPRESS)

THE HAMILTON LIVE THURSDAY, JUNE 6TH 7:30pm
“They’d be far better off spending their money on real psychological therapy. ... But shallow is as shallow does.” @BOOTYOFLOU, discussing New York Magazine’s article on “incels” — involuntarily celibate people — described as “angry, lonely, misogynist men.” The article dives into how some incels pursue plastic surgery to try to look like “Chads” — their term for attractive men. Many incels believe appearance is the key to increasing their social status and desirability. Readers noted that some men in the article reported having body dysmorphia, and therapy might be a better starting point.

the U.S. Department of Energy’s new term for natural gas. “Freedom gas” and “molecules of freedom” were used in an official press release to describe the approval of an expansion to a Texas gas facility Tuesday. “Freedom fries” was a term adopted by the three cafeterias of the U.S. House of Representatives after France opposed the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

@MITCHAM_LEWIS, blasting director Spike Lee for a scene in his Netflix show “She’s Gotta Have It.” The scene shows protagonist Nola Darling mocking the names of British actors John Boyega and Chiwetel Ejiofor, before saying that black Brits needed to “fall back” from taking movie roles from black Americans. Another character’s argument that black Brits are “unburdened” by slavery angered Twitter users, who noted that many black Brits have African and Caribbean ancestry, and also faced the injustices of colonialism. Lee has refused to apologize for the dialogue.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You may have to travel some distance today to lay your hands on something you’ve wanted to claim as your own for some time. Don’t rush it. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You realize something important just before the time comes for the notion to affect you positively in what you do, think and say. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may have to go farther than anticipated today to get where you need to be. You won’t be certain of the destination until you get there. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) What you share with another will mean more when you examine it together. You each have a gift to give to one another; now is the time.
THURSDAY’S SOLUTION
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Your
primary concerns prove to be secondary when all is said and done today, as those on a back burner will almost certainly move to the fore.
THURSDAY’S SOLUTION
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) All it takes is one lucky break to send you on your way, and today you are in the right position to get it — if it’s in the stars. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may be crediting someone else with too much when in fact you are most responsible for something that has benefited many of late. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Today in History
You are aware of how things have been in the past, but you’re not eager to see those traditions continued. Can you implement change?
1859: The Big Ben clock tower in London goes into operation, chiming for the first time.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You know what’s what and who’s who, but you won’t know why things are happening the way they are until the day is winding down. Pay attention.
1889: Some 2,200 people in Johnstown, Pa., perish when the South Fork Dam collapses, sending 20 million tons of water rushing through the town.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Once you’ve made up your mind today, you’re not likely to change it, no matter what argument is made — or who makes it. Confidence is high. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You
have a certain way of saying things and doing things that other people are going to want to imitate today — if they dare. You are unique. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You may question whether a recent accomplishment is really worth any serious attention at all. Right now, other things seem far more important.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
