U.S. Air Force officials say their pilots did not intentionally draw male anatomy with aircraft contrails in the skies above the Phoenix area. Photos of a series of sky ovals near Luke Air Force Base circulated on social media, with some saying they resembled male genitals. A spokesperson said leadership of the 56th Fighter Wing reviewed the photos and flight audio to determine the shapes were made unintentionally. (AP)

Authorities say an 11-foot alligator busted through a kitchen window and broke several bottles of red wine in a Clearwater, Fla., home. Resilient old mulberry tree ‘back up again’
WASHINGTON | About 3,000 individual stories from survivors of sexual violence blanket the Mall on Friday as part of the Monument Quilt, an art tribute that was on display through Sunday. The messages came from women, men and children across the U.S. and Mexico — stitched in churches, schools and homes. From the air, the 4-by-4-foot panels of quilts formed the words “YOU ARE NOT ALONE” and the gender-neutral translation in Spanish: “NO ESTÁS SOLX.” The Monument Quilt is the culmination of five years of gathering survivors’ stories.

That old mulberry tree on the grounds of the Washington Monument that was knocked down twice by stormy winds has been uplifted yet again, the National Park Service said. Wind and rain pushed it over May 12. It was propped up on May 22 but bowled over again the next day. But neither the tree nor the park service appeared ready to give up, and on Friday, the park service said, it was “back up again.” Dating to about 1890, the tree has become a sentimental favorite as a backdrop for historic events and tourist photos. After Friday’s shooting, Virginia Beach officials release more details on the 12 who died than on the gunman

These 11 city employees and one contractor were killed Friday when a fellow city worker opened fire inside a municipal building. CITY OF VIRGINIA BEACH VIA AP
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. The victims of America’s latest mass shooting had been dead for less than a day when police and city officials released a detailed presentation with their names, photos, job titles and the cities or towns in which they lived. In all, 12 people — 11 of them city employees — were killed by the shooter, who opened fire inside a municipal building. Far less was revealed Saturday about the man who authorities say carried out the shootings. There was no photo. And authorities promised to utter his name only once: “DeWayne Craddock,” a 40-year-old engineer who worked in the city’s utilities department. “We wanted to control that narrative,” Steve Cover, Virginia Beach’s deputy city manager of public safety, said of the news conference officials held the day after Friday’s shooting. “We didn’t want it to leak out piece by piece through family and friends and so forth through the media. We felt it was kind of our obligation to get that message out.” Virginia Beach is employing an increasingly common public information strategy: Release more details about the victims of mass shootings than of the killers — at least initially — to limit the criminals’ exposure and prevent copycat shootings. A similar tack was taken in March after a mass shooting in New Zealand. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern promised to deny a platform for the white supremacist who authorities said gunned down 51 people at two mosques. “The goal is to kind of interrupt the cycle of new mass shooters citing previous ones, and the new mass shooters who are becoming role models for even more attackers,” said Adam Lankford, a criminologist at the
“It is news,” Fox said. “We provide basic details on other types of offenders.” It is the “act — not the actor” that influences others, he said. “The Columbine massacre, for example, inspired copycats, not the assailants’ names and faces.” But there is a limit to how much should be reported, Fox said. Too much about a killer’s background can “humanize” him or her and cross the line from news reporting to “celebrity watch.” Virginia Beach officials said more information about Friday’s shooting will come out. “And we will share our lessons learned,” Cover said. But first, officials want everyone to know the profound loss the city has suffered. “They leave a void that we will never be able to fill,” said City Manager Dave Hansen, who had worked for years with many of those who were slain. Sandra McDonald, 54, an event planner and nanny who lives in Virginia Beach, said she supports the strong focus on the victims. “I think sometimes these people think going out in a blaze of glory is the way they are going to have their moment of fame,” McDonald said, referring to the mass shooters. “I just think if we don’t give them that moment of fame anymore, maybe they won’t take innocent people with them.” Alice Scott, whose husband, Joseph Scott, worked with Craddock in the Public Utilities Department, said she can understand why people don’t want to hear the shooter’s name. But she said maybe after some time has passed, “we can discuss why this happened.” “Maybe he needed someone to talk to,” she said. “Maybe he needed to [talk] out his troubles like everybody else.” BEN FINLEY (AP)

Survivors recall attack VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. At Virginia Beach’s Department of Public Utilities, where 40-year-old DeWayne Craddock was a civil engineer, his fellow employees were winding down Friday afternoon. The boss, Bob Montague, ended a meeting a little before 4 p.m. and turned to some last-minute paperwork. It was then that Craddock, who had been on the city payroll for about 15 years, opened fire on his colleagues, police said. “I heard rapid pop pops, but they weren’t very loud,” Montague said. Craddock, according to police, had equipped his pistol with a sound suppressor. “Suddenly, a kind of hole exploded in my wall,” Montague said. “I had bits of drywall and dust hit me.” It was a slaughter — a dozen victims slain. “It was all very quick, a whirlwind coming through,” Montague
Motive remains unclear
The Virginia Beach gunman resigned by email hours before the shooting, officials said Sunday. They gave no indication why he notified a superior that he intended to leave his job in the utilities department. He was an employee “in good standing” and showed “satisfactory” job performance, City Manager Dave Hansen said. (AP)
said. “You’re frightened and your adrenaline is up, and you’re thinking about what you’re going to do if you encounter someone. I had no idea what was going on, other than realizing these were gunshots.” He called 911 and texted his staff to shelter in place. Montague hunkered down himself, scanning his office for what he might use as a weapon. He did all the things he had been taught to do during
active-shooter training. Shelia Cook, whose workplace on the campus is near police and fire headquarters, a few blocks from where the shooting happened, said, “We could kind of hear what was going on.” As she and others were getting ready to leave, the crack of gunfire reached them. “Poom, poom — like that,” Cook, 49, said. “If that happened 10 minutes later, me and my colleagues would have been coming out of the building, not knowing what was occurring over there. And bullets have no name on them.” As police led the survivors out of the building, public utilities account clerk Christi Dewar, 60, said she stepped over someone who turned out to be her friend. An officer holding her hand told her, “Don’t look down,” she said. “And I don’t know how I made it.” PAUL DUGGAN, PATRICIA SULLIVAN AND IAN SHAPIRA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

For more than 20 years, Republicans and a few rural Democrats in the General Assembly have killed almost every measure aimed at restricting gun ownership. local 52,000 residents risk losing licenses in June if they don’t respond TRANSPORTATION About 1 million Maryland residents haven’t met requirements for the Real ID Act, a federal law designed to tighten security for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification. More than 50,000 of those residents could have their licenses recalled as soon as this month if they don’t file required paperwork, officials said. The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration began issuing Real ID licenses and identification cards in 2016. A year later, the Department of Homeland Security notified the state that

the required documents. “We don’t want people to panic. We just really want to encourage them to come in,” Nizer said. The 52,000 immediately at risk are among about 80,000 Marylanders required to present documents by June who haven’t replied despite multiple warnings since December, the state said. Failure to comply means your license could be confiscated if you are pulled over, Nizer said. Congress passed the Real ID Act after the Sept. 11 attacks. The law, which is intended to prevent identity fraud, sets minimum standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and IDs. Proponents of the Affordable Care Act got additional ammunition Sunday: New research links the law to a reduction in racial disparities in the care of cancer patients and to earlier diagnoses and treatment of ovarian cancer. The findings were released Sunday at a cancer conference in Chicago. According to researchers involved in the racial disparity study, before the ACA went into effect, African Americans with advanced cancer were 4.8 percentage points less likely to start treatment for their disease within 30 days of being given a diagnosis. But today, black adults in states that expanded Medicaid under the law have almost entirely caught up with white patients in getting timely treatment, researchers said.

WASHINGTON Three years ago, organizers of the Scripps National Spelling Bee changed their rules after three straight contests ended in a tie. But despite new challenges, this year’s competition ended Thursday night in an eight-way tie. Experts and observers in the competitive spelling world agreed that the survival of eight contestants through 20 rounds was an impressive performance, but some wondered whether the competition could — and perhaps should — have been harder. The average viewer may have been stumped by any of the words the winners overcame in the final rounds, which included the likes of “pendeloque,” “erysipelas” and “aiguillette.” But Linda Tarrant, chief executive of spelling bee coaching company Hexco, said all of those words are included on common spelling study lists. “It’s an awkward thing to have eight winners,” Tarrant said. “I think it dilutes the winning.” Until 2014, there hadn’t been a tie in more than 50 years, according to The Associated Press. But in 2014, 2015 and 2016, two co-champions battled to a draw and shared the trophy, prompting Scripps to change the rules. Organizers added tougher

words in 2016 and implemented a tiebreaker in 2017 and 2018 — a written test between the semifinals and finals. For the next two years, there was only one winner. Ironically, they did away with the tiebreaker this year, although it wouldn’t have broken an eight-way tie. In 2017, a written test was added to the first round, which requires contestants not only to spell words but also to define them, a departure from the traditional spelling bee. This year, 2018 runner-up Naysa Modi failed to qualify for the final 50 spellers because of her score on the written test, despite spelling all of the words correctly. Two Frenchmen sentenced to death for joining ISIS
Algeria’s Constitutional Council on Sunday canceled the July 4 presidential election in the energyrich country after the two candidates — both unknowns — were rejected. The council said in a statement that it is now up to the interim president, Abdelkader Bensalah, to set a new date for the vote. Only two candidates turned in their files by the May 25 deadline, but the council rejected them. It did not say why. An election was ordered after ailing longtime leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika stepped down April 2 under pressure from the public and the powerful army chief. That began an ongoing political crisis. (AP)
Four explosions hit the Afghan capital of Kabul on Sunday, killing at least two people and wounding 27 others, officials said. Reported among the injured were two Afghan journalists. The first bomb hit a bus carrying university students; first responders were hurt when that bomb was followed 20 minutes later by two further detonations at the same location. A fourth bomb exploded elsewhere later Sunday. A wave of attacks in the last week has rocked Kabul, where both the Islamic State group and Taliban insurgents are active. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for three of Sunday’s bombings. (AP)
A court in Baghdad on Sunday sentenced two French citizens to death for being members of the Islamic State group, including one who last week said he was subjected to torture while in detention. The sentencings come amid controversy over the legal treatment in Iraq of thousands of foreign fighters who joined ISIS at the height of its power. Human rights groups are concerned that the defendants are being rushed through Iraqi counterterrorism courts. Convictions are often based on confessions that defendants and rights groups say are extracted by methods including torture. (AP)

Mexico threat ‘deadly serious’ Mulvaney says Trump will impose tariffs until migrants are halted WASHINGTON A top White House official said Sunday that President Trump is “deadly serious” about slapping tariffs on imports from Mexico but acknowledged there are no concrete benchmarks being set to assess whether the U.S. ally stems the flow of migrants enough to satisfy the administration. “We intentionally left the declaration sort of ad hoc,” Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, said on “Fox News Sunday.” “So, there’s no specific target, there’s no specific percent, but things have to get better,” Mulvaney said. “They have to get dramatically better and they have to get better quickly.” Trump claims Mexico has taken advantage of the U.S. for decades but that the abuse will end when he slaps tariffs on Mexican imports next week in a dispute over illegal immigration. Trump tweeted Sunday: “America has had enough.” The president said last week that he will impose a 5% tariff on Mexican goods June 10 to pressure the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador to block Central American migrants from crossing the border into the U.S. Trump said the import tax will rise by 5% every month through October, topping out at 25%. But the president has been

here before, issuing high-stakes threats over his frustration with the flow of migrants only to later back off. They include his threat earlier this year to seal the border with Mexico. Republicans on Capitol Hill and allies in the business community have signaled serious unease with the tariffs, which they warn will raise prices for consumers and hurt the economy. Some see this latest threat as a play for leverage and doubt Trump will follow through. Republican Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana on Sunday called the tariffs a “mistake.” He said it’s unlikely Trump will actually impose them. The president “has been

Ways to limit migration? Acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, who spoke Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” said Mexico could take various steps to decrease the record numbers of migrants at the border. He suggested the government could seal its southern border with Guatemala, crack down on domestic terrorist organizations and make Mexico a safe place for migrants seeking to apply for asylum. (AP)

meet later this week with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a bid to come to a resolution. The tariff threat comes just as the administration has been pushing for passage of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which would update the North American Free Trade Agreement. Several top GOP lawmakers have expressed concerns that Trump’s tariff threat could upend that deal. The chairman of the Senate’s Finance Committee, Chuck Grassley of Iowa, said last week that the tariffs would “seriously jeopardize” passage of the USMCA, which needs approval in Congress. EXPENSIVE LUNCH
The amount an anonymous bidder has offered — $4,567,888, to be precise — to have a private lunch with billionaire investor Warren Buffett, shattering the record of nearly $3.5 million set in 2012 and 2016. An online auction that raises money for the Glide Foundation’s work to help the homeless in San Francisco ended Friday night. It’s the 20th year the Berkshire Hathaway CEO has participated in the lunch auction, giving the winner the chance to talk with the renowned investor and philanthropist. 1923-2019 New Orleans chef and civil rights icon Leah Chase, who created the city’s first white-tablecloth restaurant for black patrons, broke the city’s segregation laws by seating both white and black customers, and introduced countless tourists to southern Louisiana Creole cooking, died Saturday. She was 96. Chase’s family released a statement to news outlets Saturday night saying the “unwavering advocate for civil liberties” and “believer in the Spirit of New Orleans” died surrounded by family. Leah Chase transformed the Dooky Chase’s restaurant from a sandwich shop where black patrons bought lottery tickets to a refined restaurant where tourists, athletes, musicians and even presidents of all races dined on fare such as jambalaya and shrimp Clemenceau. The restaurant and Chase’s husband were both named after her father-in-law. Chase’s determination propelled her from a small-town Louisiana upbringing to a celebrated chef who authored cookbooks, appeared on cooking shows and fed civil rights greats such as Thurgood Marshall and Martin Luther King Jr. Well into her 90s, Chase could be found daily at the restaurant, using a walker while greeting customers and supervising the kitchen. She was driven by the power of food to transform a day and the desire to better her city. REBECCA SANTANA (AP)

BRUINS AT BLUES | GAME 4: 8 TONIGHT, NBC
Bruins’ best weapon is a deep bench
Wawrinka advances after 5-hour victory
STANLEY CUP FINAL Through three games, the Blues have successfully kept the Bruins’ top line of center Patrice Bergeron and wingers Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak off the score sheet at even strength, but it hasn’t mattered much. In Game 3, St. Louis was overwhelmed not just by the Bruins’ big-name players but also their supporting cast in a 7-2 rout. Boston has a 2-1 series lead because of its depth. In all three games, the Bruins’ fourth line has scored, and while center Sean Kuraly’s goal in Saturday night’s game was ultimately just one of seven, it came with just 10 seconds left in the first period to make it a 3-0 deficit at intermission. Perhaps evidence of their frustration, the Blues took costly penalties, and that’s where the Bruins’ stars were able to capitalize. Bergeron, Pastrnak and
defenseman Torey Krug all scored on the power play. Boston’s transformation into the deepest team of this postseason started with its acquisition of third-line center Charlie Coyle, who was obtained from the Wild for forward Ryan Donato and a fifth-round pick Feb. 20. The Bruins then dealt second- and fourth-round picks to the Devils for winger Marcus Johansson. With his first-period goal in Game 3, Coyle now has eight postseason goals — one behind Bergeron for the team lead. Johansson recorded the primary assist and later scored Boston’s fourth power-play goal for 11 points in 18 games. “I think it’s tough to play against,” Johansson said last this week. “It wears them down. We don’t take any breaks, we have four lines that can produce and four lines that have stepped up in big moments. We got six

[defensemen] that all make plays and it makes it tough throughout a whole series.” Boston’s Kuraly line plays more than most fourth lines around the league, with coach
Bruce Cassidy deploying that trio with Joakim Nordstrom and Noel Acciari more than 11 minutes at even strength in the first three games of this series. There’s been speculation that Bergeron is playing through an injury, and an added benefit of the Bruins’ blowout Saturday was that he received extra rest down the stretch. Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington was yanked in the second period after allowing five goals on 19 shots, the first time he’s been pulled in his young career. “Sometimes it’s not going to go your way,” he said. “It’s a long series. We’ve come this far. We have to regroup and come back at them for next g a m e .” I S A B E L L E K H U R S H U DYA N (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Durant might play after one practice
Tuesday is the next telltale day in Golden State star Kevin Durant’s recovery from a calf injury. After Game 2 on Sunday against the Raptors, which ended after Express’ deadline, the Warriors will rest today and practice Tuesday. Coach Steve Kerr said Sunday that Durant is not yet cleared to practice, but said “it’s feasible” that Durant would need only one practice before playing in Game 3 or 4. MLB ATTENDANCE
Ballpark crowds dwindling — compared to this time last season — for the fourth straight year to 26,854. Baltimore, Cincinnati, Minnesota and Tampa Bay have set stadium lows this year. Here’s how the numbers shake out. (AP)

1.4% The Marlins are averaging 9,554 fans per game, less than the 9,582 average at Triple-A Las Vegas.
The percent decrease in average attendance compared with a similar point last season. And last season’s numbers were already bad: The average attendance wound up below 30,000 for the first time since 2003. It peaked at 32,785 in 2007.

The percent increase in MLB.tv streaming compared with a similar point last year. Major league games top primetime cable ratings in 24 of 25 markets. And dayof-game sales are up 6%, so at least some numbers are looking up.

The percent decrease in attendance at Nationals Park this season. Washington is averaging 27,628 fans per game so far this year. Last season’s average was 31,620. Harper’s absence and the team’s 26-33 record may partially explain it.

1 ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Wednesday on Hulu
An overdue correction ‘When They See Us’ powerfully reflects on the injustice of the Central Park Five case TV REVIEW “When They See Us,” which premiered Friday on Netflix, is the kind of miniseries you get when the right showrunner assembles the right team and the right performers with the unequivocating intent to correct an important story that many people still get wrong. In this case, director Ava DuVernay takes on the injustice of what happened to the Central Park Five — four African American men and one Hispanic man who, as teenagers, were rounded up, taken to a police precinct office and coerced into saying they brutally assaulted and raped a white woman who was jogging in Central Park on April 19, 1989.
There was never any physical evidence that they did. The boys — Korey Wise, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson and Antron McCray — were found guilty on some of the charges in a 1990 trial. Donald Trump took out newspaper ads to demand their execution. As everyone ought to know by now, the jogger’s true attacker confessed in 2002, and his DNA matched the evidence. A state Supreme Court vacated the Central Park Five’s sentences. The five men sued the city and reached a $41 million settlement in 2014. DuVernay’s approach turns this story inside out, borrowing the look of true-crime dramas while discarding the genre’s

No holding back Director Ava DuVernay is in no mood to relitigate the case of the Central Park Five in “When They See Us.” Linda Fairstein (Felicity Huffman), the head of the district attorney’s sex-crimes unit, is portrayed as menacingly reckless. The prosecutor (Vera Farmiga as Elizabeth Lederer), meanwhile, lucks out with a jury willing to convict the boys based on videotaped confessions alone. H.S.
usual tropes. As the title suggests, this story — which is split into four episodes — is all about how the Central Park Five were seen, and, by extension, how most minority teenage boys are still often
seen — not as children and young citizens, but as potential thugs. The young actors playing the teens (Jharrel Jerome, Ethan Herisse, Caleel Harris, Asante Blackk and Marquis Rodriguez) ably convey confusion and panic. Once the headlines die down, the boys become men, and the story of their families (with fine performances from Niecy Nash, John Leguizamo and Michael K. Williams) also takes shape. When the news of the men’s freedom comes — and the series reaches its full, swelling sense of the miraculous — the viewer will finally understand his or her part in all this: All that’s being asked of us is to see.
2 NETFLIX
Jharrel Jerome plays Korey Wise, one of the Central Park Five, in Netflix’s “When They See Us.”
Season 3 of the series based on Margaret Atwood’s iconic novel follows the aftermath of June’s (Elisabeth Moss) decision to stay in Gilead as she hopes to reunite with her daughter and, perhaps, spark a revolution.
‘Black Mirror’ Wednesday on Netflix
Miley Cyrus, Andrew Scott, Topher Grace and Anthony Mackie are among the stars enlisted for the fifth season of the anthology series about the potentially disturbing implications of technological advancement.

Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Co. return for Season 2 of the twisty series about Northern California mothers wrapped up in a murder investigation, with Meryl Streep joining that powerhouse cast. (EXPRESS)

BOX OFFICE HAUL
The domestic box office take for the Warner Bros. sequel “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” during its opening weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. The total topped the box office but fell short of analysts’ projections of $53 million to $56 million. “Aladdin” came in at No. 2, as the Disney remake grossed $42.3 million in its second weekend. The Elton John biopic “Rocketman” opened in third place with sales of $25 million, while the thriller “Ma” finished fourth with $18.3 million. Musical superstar Adam Levine had this idea — instead of a TV competition for singers, how about one for songwriters? It’s called “Songland,” and it launched last week on NBC. Your first reaction may be: Wouldn’t it be kind of boring to watch a show about the art of writing songs? But “Songland”
has made sure it’s got mass appeal. Each of the 11 episodes (airing at 10 p.m. Tuesdays) features a big-name singer as a guest star: John Legend last week, will.i.am tomorrow and, in the weeks ahead, the Jonas Brothers and Meghan Trainor. Five songwriters appear in the premiere, each singing a song they composed in the hope that the week’s guest star will love it and record it.

A fresh tune: ‘Songland’ gives reality TV a remix
Tuesday’s episode of the new series “Songland” features, from left, guest star will.i.am and panelists Shane McAnally, Ester Dean and Ryan Tedder.
The show also features a panel of accomplished songwriters to chime in: Shane McAnally, Ryan Tedder and Ester Dean. Along with the
week’s guest star, they critique each offering. Then things heat up. The celebrity guest picks three favorites. And each contestant
Variety: HBO’s “Silicon Valley” to end with upcoming sixth season
teams up with one of the panelists to break down the song and build it back up. It actually turns out to be pretty cool to have an inside look at how a decent song can get better. Legend’s pick to record, “We Need Love,” morphed from a bouncy, reggae-influenced ditty to a melancholy plea. Meanwhile, everyone on Episode 1 missed a great opportunity. Impressed by songwriter Ollie Gabriel’s high hair and plaid suit, the effervescent Dean says, “You wear your fly well.” Is that not the title of a potential hit song or what? A reporter from The Sun on Saturday asked Trump if he knew of the duchess’s 2016 remark that she would move to Canada if he were elected. In recorded audio, Trump clearly says, “No, I didn’t know she was nasty.â€? On Sunday, both Trump and @TrumpWarRoom denied he said it, though the latter also posted the audio.

According to Bloomberg, iTunes will be replaced by three independent apps for music, television and podcasts. iTunes users took to Twitter to express their love of the platform, while others said an early adieu to a glitchy program that needed almost constant updates.

“The Catholic Church has a hell of a lot of nerve talking about what’s harmful to children.â€? @LOUISATHELAST, blasting Rhode Island Bishop Thomas Tobin for a tweet Saturday that said, “Catholics should not support or attend LGBTQ ‘Pride Month’ eventsâ€? because they’re “harmful for children.â€? @TYSONCREME, reacting to boxer Anthony Joshua’s stunning Saturday loss to Andy Ruiz Jr., which also saw Joshua lose his three major boxing title belts. Taylor Swift posted a letter to Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., early Saturday asking him to support the Equality Act. The pop star, who lives in Tennessee, stated she supported the House’s passage of the bill, which would extend civil rights protections to the LGBTQ community. The legislation seemingly faces slim chances of passage in the GOP-controlled Senate. “I personally reject the President’s stance that his administration, ‘supports equal treatment of all,’ but that the Equality Act, ‘in its current form is filled with poison pills,’ ” Swift added.
