Police impersonators fooled police, firefighters and the public for years in Flint, Mich., The Flint Journal reported Thursday. The impersonators acted as police at parks, fires, car crashes and crime scenes. County Prosecutor David Leyton said they sometimes were first to arrive at crime scenes and “real police would ask them to perform tasks.” An investigation started after a complaint about rude park rangers who turned out to be imposters. An escape artist emu known as “The Bird” has been returned to its animal sanctuary in Lisbon, Maine. Police, animal control and much of the town searched throughout the day Thursday for the emu after it escaped. A spokeswoman for the sanctuary said the 19-year-old bird was captured near a neighbor’s house. The Bangor Daily News reported that someone caring for The Bird was moving it to its summer residence when it bolted. (AP)

A crab toss for the Capitals 15-year-old fan wore two pairs of underwear to pull off the stunt

BRUCE BENNETT (GETTY IMAGES)

CAPITALS The first known crab toss in Stanley Cup finals history, which took place as the horn sounded at the end of the Washington Capitals’ 3-1 win over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 3 on Saturday at Capital One Arena, was the product of careful planning, creative concealment and flawless execution by 15-year-old Jack Merritt. After Merritt’s grandmother surprised him with tickets to Saturday’s game last week, the sophomore hockey and lacrosse player at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High began brainstorming ways to put a local twist on the longstanding tradition of hockey fans throwing objects on the ice. “I was thinking seafood,” Merritt said. “I thought a crab was perfect to represent our area.” Sea creatures and hockey go way back. The tradition of Red Wings fans throwing octopuses on the ice originated in the 1950s. Nashville Predators fans have thrown catfish on the ice to celebrate big moments since 2003.

The Capitals’ official Twitter account shared this photo of the crab that Jack Merritt threw.

Merritt did some research and messaged Capitals fan and experienced crab-tosser Ryan Henkin on Facebook. Henkin, a Baltimore native, threw a crab on the ice during the preseason Baltimore Hockey Classic in 2011. He provided a couple of ideas for how to sneak the contraband past security. In 2011, Henkin put his crab in an empty cough drops bag inside his girlfriend’s purse. The next time, he wrapped his crab in plastic wrap and placed it

“I just threw it and kept cheering. I was just making sure I didn’t hit any players. That was probably my biggest fear.” JACK MERRITT, who threw a cooked, Old Bay seasoned crab onto the ice after the Capitals’ win in Game 3

between two pairs of underwear. Merritt opted for the latter method; he placed his crab in a quart-size Ziploc bag and stuffed it between two pairs of underwear. “It wasn’t that uncomfortable, honestly,” Merritt said. “I was pretty nervous going through security, but once I got through, I went to the bathroom and took it out and put it in my bag.” With about five minutes left in the third period, Merritt made his way down to the main concourse. As the horn sounded, he tossed the crab over the glass. It only lost one claw when it hit the ice and came to a rest in Alex Ovechkin’s “office” inside the left faceoff circle. After the Capitals tweeted about the crab, Merritt, who created a @capscrab Twitter account, said his phone blew up with messages from friends. So, should Capitals fans be on the lookout for another crab tonight? “I don’t have tickets for Game 4,” Merritt said. “I’m hoping I can pull something off, but if not, I know at least one of my friends has seats. I’m going to try to pressure him into starting a tradition.” SCOTT ALLEN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

After flood, tough decisions

THE DISTRICT

Commander removed amid rise in homicides

ELLICOTT CITY, MD. In the aftermath of Ellicott City’s second devastating, deadly flood in two years, many outsiders have pondered what one Facebook commenter summed up this way: “Time to stop rebuilding in a flood zone.” In truth, however, there is no question that the downtown historic district will be rebuilt. The more than 200-year-old enclave is Howard County’s cultural heart, its highest-profile attraction and a big economic generator. An economic impact study after the 2016 storm said Ellicott City’s Main Street corridor contributes about $124 million a year in business activity. But some locals acknowledge that it may be time to rethink some of the zone’s most flood-vulnerable spots. “We might look at a future that has part of the town moving uphill,” said County Council member Jon Weinstein, whose district includes the devastated area. Such ideas are not new. The suburban county has been considering its flood-control options since before a similar 2016 deluge in Ellicott City, which was all-toofresh on people’s minds when last month’s storm struck. This second blow, which many business owners say caused more damage than the flood that killed two people two years ago, has brought new urgency to an often

controversial conversation: What is causing the floods, and what is the best way to deal with them? “I’ll tell you, in all frankness, the discussions we had after 2016 will be different now in 2018,” Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman said at a news conference Thursday. The town sits below steep hills at the convergence of four creeks that flow into the Patapsco. The earliest and most destructive flood recorded there came in 1868, when the river rose five feet in 10 minutes and killed 43 people. The recent deluges, however, were caused not by the river but by water rushing in from above. Over the years, people have blamed development at higher elevations for the flooding, noting

that rooftops and parking lots do not soak up water the way woods and fields do. Instead, it flows to land below. County officials acknowledge that development has contributed to the problem but point out that 60 to 70 percent of that building took

place before 1980, before storm water management regulations were in place and long before current county officials took office. “There really has not been much new development or even approved development in the last four years,” said Kittleman, who was elected in 2014. Tim Kendzierski, who co-owns Ellicott Mills Brewing Co., which is far enough uphill that its damage was limited, said he has faith in the county to work out longterm solutions. In the near term, he said, businesses need to start generating revenue again. “We know that we’re a tenacious bunch,” he said. “We know what we can do, because we’ve done it before.” STEVE THOMPSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A historical marker commemorating a Virginia couple’s successful challenge to laws banning interracial marriage has been placed near the jail where the couple was once held. Caroline County officials and descendants of Mildred and Richard Loving attended ceremonies Saturday in Bowling Green. The marker is just south of the jail where the Lovings were taken after their 1958 arrest for violating the state’s law banning interracial marriage. GOP taps Riggleman to replace Garrett on ballot Republican activists chose Denver Riggleman at a meeting Saturday to replace Rep. Thomas Garrett on the November ballot. The vote came less than a week after Garrett revealed he is an alcoholic and abandoned his re-election bid. VIRGINIA Corey Stewart, the provocative Prince William Republican who is seeking the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate, took his campaign on Saturday to neighboring Fairfax County, where he has been highlighting problems with the MS13 gang and presenting himself as the best candidate to address crime and illegal immigration. In the process, Stewart has rankled Democrats and Republicans in Virginia’s largest jurisdiction who were already concerned over how a recent spike in MS13-related crimes — including four killings in the past two years — will affect Fairfax’s image. Stewart is considered the front-runner in the three-way primary contest for Senate on June 12. He is competing against Del. Nick Freitas and evangelical pastor E.W. Jackson. The winner will challenge Sen. Tim Kaine in November. In robocalls and campaign stops through some of Fairfax’s wealthiest neighborhoods, Stewart promised to “Make Fairfax Safe Again” — and portrayed the county of 1.1 million residents as being overrun by criminal gangs while falsely claiming that Fairfax has “declared itself

a ‘sanctuary city.’ ” The strategy mirrors that of President Trump, who has repeatedly fanned fears over MS-13 to score political points, most recently accusing House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of being an “MS-13 lover.” Officials in Fairfax accused Stewart of trying to cause a scare. “It’s giving totally false information,” said Sharon Bulova, the chair of Fairfax’s Board of Supervisors and a Democrat. “Fairfax County has not declared itself a sanctuary city, and Fairfax County does not have the worst MS-13 problem, and our jails are not releasing dangerous criminals into the community,” she said. “None of that is true.” ANTONIO OLIVO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Study: U.S. forces killed 500 civilians in 2017 Critics say Pentagon’s tally fails to account for many more deaths

Bloody fists — and a bloody first for U.S.

U.S.-led offensives to expel ISIS targeted crowded urban areas, including Mosul’s Old City, shown here on June 18, 2017.

NATIONAL SECURITY U.S. military operations killed about 500 civilians in 2017, as President Trump took command of the Pentagon and U.S. troops pursued the Islamic State and other militants overseas, a report made public on Friday found. In a study mandated by Congress, the Defense Department said it considered allegations about those incidents, which took place in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Yemen, to be credible after an internal review. Another 169 civilians were reported injured. But watchdog groups and legal experts said the Pentagon may be grossly undercounting the number of noncombatants killed in airstrikes and other military activities because of a faulty system for investigating and counting possible deaths. “The Defense Department has deemed that the vast majority of claims of civilian casualties are not credible without ever investigating them,” Daphne Eviatar, a director at Amnesty International USA, said in a statement. “Its numbers therefore likely severely undercount the actual civilian death toll.” Airwars, an organization that tracks and examines casualty allegations using information from social media and other sources,

reported this year that the U.S. and its allies may have killed as many as 6,000 civilians in strikes in Iraq and Syria alone in 2017. In its study, required by the fiscal 2018 defense authorization law, the Pentagon said it had abided by laws of war, including those designed to protect civilians. Defense officials have long defended the precautions they take to avoid accidentally hitting noncombatants, citing elaborate measures taken to surveil target sites and calculate blast areas before airstrikes. But the challenge facing military leaders has increased as the fight is more often conducted from a distance, using aircraft and local partners to reduce harm to U.S. troops.

$160T

The period covered by the report included intense U.S. air operations to expel the Islamic State from the Iraqi city of Mosul and the Syrian city of Raqqa; both offensives occurred in crowded urban areas. The Pentagon said it and its allies conducted more than 10,000 strikes against the Islamic State in 2017, a massive air operation that presented a challenge to U.S. surveillance and intelligence capabilities. The report also included an increasingly intense air war in Afghanistan, where U.S. commanders have been granted new authority to target the Taliban and provide air support to Afghan troops. Wyoming is the first state to sanction bare-knuckle boxing. The last significant bare-knuckle bout in the United States was July 8, 1889, when John L. The amount that would be added to the global economy if women were paid as much as men in the workplace, a study released last week by the World Bank has found, The Guardian reports. Equal pay would lead to a wealth jump of $23,620 per person. The figures were calculated based on the earning potential of the current labor force in 141 countries. North America and Europe had some of the largest total losses in wealth due to gender inequality, ranging from $40 trillion to $50 trillion. President Trump on Sunday continued his jabs at the Justice Department via Twitter, expressing dismay that, when still a candidate, he wasn’t told that authorities were investigating Paul Manafort, who was hired as Trump’s campaign chairman. Manafort has since been charged with multiple felonies. “Paul Manafort came into the campaign very late and was with us for a short period of time ‌ but we should have been told that [then-FBI Director James B.] Comey and the boys were doing a number on him, and he wouldn’t have been hired!â€? Five people have died and nearly 200 from about three dozen states have been sickened by E. coli in a growing outbreak that has so far stumped federal investigators. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the tally Friday, more than two months after the first illnesses occurred. Although investigators have determined that the E. coli came from contaminated romaine lettuce grown in Arizona’s Yuma region, the Food and Drug Administration has not been able to link the outbreak to one farm, processor or distributor. With the tainted vegetables now off the shelves and the growing season over, the FDA may never crack the case, frustrating consumer advocates who have called on the agency to issue rules to speed up future investigations of food-borne illnesses. The CDC said 197 people have been sickened, nearly half of whom were hospitalized. Twenty-six developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure that can be lifethreatening to people with weak immune systems. Most of those who have been affected come from California, where one death was reported, and Pennsylvania. This is the worst outbreak since 2006, when 205 people became ill and five died after contracting E. coli from baby spinach. KRISTINE PHILLIPS

A pardon by/for Trump? POLITICS President Trump’s attorney Rudolph Giuliani said Sunday that the president’s constitutional powers probably include the ability to pardon himself. But Giuliani said such a move would surely incite political blowback and lead to impeachment proceedings. Giuliani, appearing on ABC’s “This Week, was asked about a letter sent by Trump’s legal team early this year to special counsel Robert Mueller saying the president can’t be forced to testify as part of Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The 20-page letter asserted that Trump has unlimited power over federal investigations and could terminate any investigation “or even exercise his power to pardon. The existence of the letter was first reported by The New York Times. The letter offered a sweeping assertion of the powers of the presidency as well as a detailed and robust defense of Trump’s actions in dealing with the unfolding Russia probe, including his firing of FBI Director James Comey in May 2017. It concluded that Trump’s actions were in keeping with the expansive powers of the presidency and could not constitute crimes. When ABC’s George Stephanopoulos asked Giuliani whether Trump has the ability to pardon himself, the former prosecutor — who was not on Trump’s legal team when the letter was written — laughed and then said probably so. “He probably does, Giuliani said. “He has no intention of

nation+world Research in early-stage breast cancer supports forgoing chemotherapy HEALTH The majority of women with the most common type of early-stage breast cancer can safely skip chemotherapy after surgery, according to a highly anticipated new report. The results are sure to accelerate the decline in chemotherapy for the disease. The findings, from the largest breast cancer treatment trial ever conducted, showed that most patients who have an intermediate risk of a cancer recurrence — a group that numbers 65,000 women a year in the United States — can avoid

chemotherapy and its often debilitating side effects. The same decade-long study had previously confirmed that patients at low risk, as determined by a genomic test of their tumors, can skip chemotherapy. The two groups, taken together, account for about 70 percent of women diagnosed with the most common type of breast cancer. That means more than 85,000 women a year can safely forgo chemotherapy. Some of those women have already been skipping chemotherapy based on less rigorous research. Now they can have confidence in those decisions. “We have been waiting for these results for years,” said Allison Kurian, an oncologist at

At least 55 migrants drown in Mediterranean A boat carrying migrants toward Europe sank off the coast of Tunisia and at least 46 people drowned, though dozens more could be missing, the North African nation’s defense ministry said Sunday. The ministry said 68 people were rescued overnight. Earlier Sunday, Turkish officials reported that nine migrants, including six children, drowned when a boat capsized near the southern province of Antalya. (AP)

The cancer in question is driven by hormones, has not spread to the lymph nodes and does not contain a protein called HER2. Generally, after surgery, such patients receive endocrine therapy, such as tamoxifen, which is designed to block the cancerspurring effects of hormones. Sunday’s results came from a federally sponsored trial called TAILORx, which was designed to help doctors more precisely tailor treatments for early-stage breast cancer. Since 2006, the trial has enrolled more than 10,000 women in the United States and five other countries diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer and followed their progress through post-surgery treatment.

Critics slam Trump’s grin in photo op NATIONAL SECURITY When former President Bill Clinton traveled to North Korea in 2009 on a humanitarian mission to free two U.S. journalists, he delivered strict instructions to his team ahead of their meeting with dictator Kim Jong Il: “We’re not smiling.” In several photos, including a formal portrait with their hosts in Pyongyang, Clinton and his aides kept their game faces on — befitting the tone of the mission, according to a person familiar with the trip. President Trump took a decidedly different approach on Friday when he welcomed a North Korean official to the White House for the first such meeting in 18 years. Trump beamed as Kim Yong Chol — a former spy chief accused of masterminding the sinking of a South Korean navy vessel in 2010 that killed 46 sailors — presented him with a cartoonishly oversize envelope containing a letter from Kim Jong Un, the nation’s current dictator. The two posed for a photo in the Oval Office with Trump proudly showing off the envelope — an image that White House aides promptly distributed to the public. The warm display left some former U.S. officials who have negotiated with North Korea arguing that Trump had already handed Pyongyang a public relations victory before winning concessions

on its nuclear program. “No question this is speed dating,” said Christopher R. Hill, a former State Department diplomat who led the U.S. delegation in the Six-Party Talks with North Korea during the George W. Bush administration. He recalled being rebuffed in his bid to personally deliver a letter from Bush to Kim Jong Il — in a standard business-size envelope. By contrast, Hill said, the North Koreans already “have gotten the whole enchilada” from Trump. The question of how to engage with a brutal, authoritarian regime has been a challenge for most presidents, but it has taken on heightened sensitivity as Trump prepares to meet Kim Jong Un in Singapore on June 12. No sitting president has ever met with a North Korean leader, and the summit will produce images that ricochet around the globe. For Trump, the risks with his interactions with Kim go beyond the private talks at the bargaining table, former U.S. officials said. “Photo ops of the two together, smiling, those are disseminated in North Korea to show the two leaders are equal,” said Bill Richardson, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations who met with several dictators, including Iraq’s Saddam Hussein, and made several trips to Pyongyang. “Trump should avoid the propaganda, the one-on-one smiling and hugging.” Yet Trump views the photos as a victory, too — a symbol that he is willing to discard the diplomatic conventions that have limited his predecessors and stymied their

Trump’s warm approach President Trump has upended more cautious diplomatic approaches by his predecessors in showing warmth toward authoritarian figures. (TWP) Chinese President Xi Jinping: Trump treated Xi to “the most beautiful piece of chocolate cake” last year during a lavish summit. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte: Trump said Duterte, who has presided over extrajudicial killings of thousands of suspected drug dealers, was doing an “unbelievable job on the drug problem.” Russian President Vladimir Putin: Trump applauded Putin in March for winning another term even though national security aides warned him in writing, “DO NOT CONGRATULATE,” because the election was viewed as manipulated.

attempts to curb North Korea’s nuclear program. White House aides said Trump’s sudden decision in March to agree to the summit was made with the confidence that his own negotiating skills would quickly pay greater dividends than three decades of failed lower-level talks. For years, Trump and other Republicans had criticized Obama for cozying up to dictators and looking feckless and weak on the world stage. But after meeting with Kim Yong Chol for more than 90 minutes, Trump said the two did not discuss human rights — even though the Kim family regime has imprisoned tens of thousands of North Koreans in hard-labor camps and abducted American, Japanese and South Korean citizens. DAVID NAKAMURA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may allow a “Western hamburger franchise” into the country as a show of goodwill toward the U.S., according to an intelligence report described by U.S. officials to NBC. A Pyongyang McDonald’s seems like small fries, but experts and history suggest there’s more at play than one token franchise. McDonald’s has long been seen as a symbol of Western culture and capitalism — particularly in communist countries. And its expansion into China and Russia was seen as a milestone in the 1990s. In the 1970s, when the chain expanded into Europe, McDonald’s promised to bring all-American business values — speed, standardization and ruthless efficiency — to the countries where it operated. McDonald’s now has 37,241 locations in 120 countries. When Moscow got its first franchise in 1990, Russians waited in line for hours to eat at what USA Today called “this city’s new symbol of capitalism.” Then McDonald’s began popping up in China — where customers hated the food, ethnographer Yunxiang Yan found, but loved the aura of prosperity and progress. “In the eyes of Beijing residents,” he wrote in 1997, “McDonald’s represents Americana and the promise of modernization.” CAITLIN DEWEY

STANLEY CUP FINAL Matt Niskanen’s long strides carried him down the ice Saturday as the puck sailed in front of the Capitals’ defenseman with less than 30 seconds left in the second period of Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals at Capital One Arena. Working to kill off a Capitals’ penalty and with Vegas’ Shea Theodore in his sights, Niskanen powered past Theodore and across the offensive blue line. And as Niskanen drove to the outside of Theodore while the Vegas defenseman shot a quick glance to center ice, Theodore tripped, giving Niskanen a clear path toward the Golden Knights’ goal. Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury was forced out to defend and was called for tripping Niskanen, effectively killing the Golden Knights’ power play and any chance of a momentum shift ahead of intermission. Niskanen’s hustle exemplified the Capitals’ continuous effort plays on both sides of the ice that propelled them to a 3-1 win. “He is our rock back there,” Capitals center Jay Beagle said of Niskanen. “He is always making unbelievable plays and that is

huge, yeah, when guys make big plays or big blocks, [like when] Ovi has huge blocks, it brings the bench up.” Washington’s Devante SmithPelly said that effort plays like pushing it out on a penalty kill, drawing penalties and chasing down the puck are the “little things” that will be important for the rest of the series. “It is really simple,” Capitals center Lars Eller said. “It is just commitment from all five guys and even though we didn’t execute perfectly every time [on Saturday], the commitment was there and the effort was there always so we got better.”

Defensively, the Capitals had 26 blocked shots to Vegas’ nine. Thirteen different players blocked shots for the Capitals. “I think there’s more to blocking shots than just going out there and trying to get hit,” Capitals goalie Braden Holtby said. “We’re doing a great job of creating the right layers, guys going out there strategically to know which lane I’m picking for sightlines and they’re taking away the other half and making big blocks and that’s a huge part of why we’re having success defensively because it’s all through our lineup.” Alex Ovechkin, who blocked two shots Saturday, was a key leader for the Capitals defensively. Theodore praised the Capitals’ defense, saying it was tough to find lanes, but that the Golden Knights were also to blame for a lack of offensive productivity. “Tonight just called for a little bit more of that,” Smith-Pelly said after the game. “Game 1 was different than Game 2 and tonight was different as well. It just kind of called for everyone to block shots tonight and we are willing to do that.” SAMANTHA PELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

stanley cup final BARRY SVRLUGA | THE WASHINGTON POST

The goal was the important play. It would be on all the highlights. It put the Capitals up 1-0 on the Golden Knights in the second period Saturday night. It’s the foundation on which Alex Ovechkin has built a reputation — an entire life, really. How Ovechkin scored that goal in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals mattered, too, because he wasn’t camped out in the left faceoff circle. He was tangled among bodies, a greasy spot he might not always have gone to, falling to the ice because that’s exactly what it took. Ovechkin’s goal spurred Washington’s 3-1 victory over Vegas at dead-red Capital One Arena. But to get a true sense of his impact this postseason, go back to the first period — the first 20 minutes of June hockey that D.C. had hosted in 20 years. With about two minutes left, Vegas defenseman Nate Schmidt loaded up a shot. And there was Ovechkin, moving up on Schmidt. He did not avoid the puck. He sought it. As the puck rose, Ovechkin’s left knee rose with it. There was never a danger of it reaching goaltender Braden Holtby. Ovechkin blocked it. “It’s the Stanley Cup Final,” Ovechkin said. “What do you want to do? It’s all-in for everybody.” All-in for the captain. All-in for the city. Saturday night was a reminder of how thirsty the District is for a champion. In the hours before the game, F Street was packed, home to three television stages and thousands of fans.

How many of the 18,506 who cheered Ovechkin’s goal Saturday were first drawn to this rink by him? None of this happens without Ovechkin. We’ve understood that for more than a decade, but it’s important to acknowledge it again now. Saturday was Ovi’s 564th game in this building. The last 414 of those have been sellouts built on the back of No. 8. But this was his first home game in the Stanley Cup finals. Scoring the first goal here — call it karma or whatever — felt perfect. “I thought that was a little bit of poetic justice, if you will,” coach Barry Trotz said, “for all the tough times.” Rewatch the goal, then, but appreciate the blocked shot. That effort is everything Ovechkin is giving, at the end of his 13th season, to win his first Stanley Cup. It was a reminder that we are watching a transcendent scorer, the best of his generation, playing the most complete hockey of his life. “He’s as engaged as anyone could ever be,” defenseman John Carlson said. “It shows in his game. And it shows in the effect it has on the rest of us.” Ovechkin’s primary mission will always be to score. He’s registered a point in 17 of the Caps’ 22 playoff games this year. When past playoff runs ended a month earlier than they could have, Ovechkin frequently took the blame. That blame was a burden, and we are watching him lift it off himself. “He has absorbed everything since he came to town,” said Vegas general manager George McPhee, who drafted Ovechkin when the GM worked for Washington. “He’s been in the spotlight. It’s been

ROB CARR (GETTY IMAGES)

Whatever it takes: Ovi is doing more than just scoring

a nice thing for other players … to not play with the pressure that he has to play with. He absorbs everything, win or lose.” Entering Game 4 tonight in Washington, the Capitals — and Ovechkin — are all of two wins from hoisting the Stanley Cup. They will be the most difficult wins of Ovechkin’s career. Whether he scores or not, keep an eye on Ovechkin, who is almost as entertaining off the ice. When Holtby made the save of his life to preserve a win in Game 2, Ovechkin covered his face with both his gloves, disbelieving and thankful and relieved. When Evgeny Kuznetsov scored to put the Caps up 2-0 on Saturday, Ovechkin jumped to his feet and thrust his arms and his eyes skyward with joy.

Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals are two victories away from winning the Stanley Cup.

“You just want to give emotion to your teammates,” Ovechkin said, “and to yourself as well.” The emotion isn’t the half of it. The effort is more important. Ovechkin is all over the stat sheet. Saturday night: five shots, two more that were blocked, three more that missed the net, two hits, a takeaway. And, just as he has throughout these playoffs, two blocks — two of the Capitals’ 26. “You see your leader, the guy who isn’t exactly paid to do those things, it makes everyone want to do the same,” said forward Devante Smith-Pelly. “It makes every guy want to jump up into shots.” Follow Barry Svrluga on Twitter @barrysvrluga

Center returns to ice for more scoring, dancing in jubilant Game 3 win STANLEY CUP FINAL C apit a ls c enter Evgeny Kuznetsov put all the questions about his pain threshold to rest by merely taking his first shift Saturday night in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals. Whatever the severity of his injury, believed to be located in his left wrist, it was enough to knock him out for the majority of Game 2 three nights earlier.

But the pain Kuznetsov may have felt Saturday night was not enough to stop him from igniting an odd-man rush in the second period at Capital One Arena, then deciding he would take the shot himself, beating Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury with a wicked wrist shot that gave the Capitals a 2-0 lead that turned into a 3-1 victory. It didn’t matter that the 26-year-old was potentially not 100 percent healthy in that moment, only that his wrister was strong enough to beat Fleury. “I feel like I can help the team,”

BRUCE BENNETT (GETTY IMAGES)

Injury scare didn’t cool off Kuznetsov

Evgeny Kuznetsov’s goal gave the Capitals a two-goal lead Saturday.

Kuznetsov said. “It seemed to work out pretty well for us.” After his goal at the 12:50 mark of the second period, Kuznetsov flapped his wings like a bird, his customary celebration for years.

Kuznetsov, who leads the playoffs with 27 points, found his rhythm right away. Within the first few minutes, he made a perfect pass to Alex Ovechkin on a two-on-one that looked as if

it would result in a surefire goal. Fleury robbed Ovechkin, but it was clear that Washington’s Russians would play up to the level of their blockbuster talent. On Friday, Kuznetsov looked as though he might be limited. But he woke up Saturday morning and knew in his gut that he could help his team get the upper hand in the finals. When asked whether he had overcome pain during his performance, Kuznetsov just smiled and referenced six-time NBA champion Michael Jordan, who always seemed to find another level when he was hurt. A reporter asked Kuznetsov whether he was comparing himself to Jordan. “No, no, no,” he said with a boyish laugh. “But when you’re hurt, you play better, always.” ROMAN STUBBS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

playoff hits and blocked shots. Like Smith-Pelly, Stephenson has become an impact player for Washington while performing on a league-minimum contract. The 24-year-old was cut at the end of camp, and every other NHL team had a chance to sign him before he cleared waivers and returned to AHL Hershey. In 22 playoff games, Stephenson has two goals and seven points. He can play wing and center, gives opponents fits with his speed and is a key cog on the penalty kill. Trotz calls Stephenson the Capitals’ “Swiss army knife.” Kempny, 27, has been another significant addition. Acquired from Chicago in late February for a third-round draft pick, he has primarily played with John Carlson while averaging 17:43 of ice time. “He’s been a really good fit,” Trotz said of Kempny. “He’s played substantial minutes. He’s a really good pro. He moves the puck. He’s such a strong skater. I think he’s one of those guys who really works at his craft.”

STANLEY CUP FINAL Defenseman Brooks Orpik was all alone, lying in the corner of the rink and clutching his head with both hands Saturday at Capital One Arena. He had just taken the brunt of a violent collision with Vegas winger James Neal, who had launched into Orpik in reverse before Orpik could line him up. Orpik’s skates came off the ground, and he landed hard, and his neck snapped back as he hit the ice. Both the NHL and the Capitals had to determine if Orpik’s night should have ended then, in the second period of Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals. Orpik, 37, has a history of concussions. He stayed down after taking the hit but returned to the game. In a plea for a penalty call, Orpik appeared to tell officials that he had been hit in the head. The NHL gives teams discretion to remove potentially concussed players if they are slow to get up, but the league has spotters watching for signs of trouble both at arenas and at a control center in New York. Orpik did not speak to reporters Saturday, but coach Barry Trotz said the defenseman is “fine.” But the decision not to remove him for testing showed why the league has taken criticism for its protocol. Ann McKee, who heads the CTE Center at Boston University, recently told Canadian network TSN that the NHL is “in the dark ages” regarding concussions and called its stance toward them “laughable” and “ridiculous.” ADAM KILGORE

STANLEY CUP FINAL Star forwards Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov and goaltender Braden Holtby have all taken over at times for the Capitals in the Stanley Cup Final, but Washington would not hold a 2-1 series lead against Vegas without some unlikely contributors. In Game 3, Devante SmithPelly scored his fifth goal of the playoffs — just two shy of his regular-season total. Defenseman Michal Kempny, who was acquired at the trade deadline, and versatile rookie Chandler Stephenson have also impressed. “All through the playoffs, any team that’s having success, you’re going to have your depth come into play,” coach Barry Trotz said. “A lot of times your stars get canceled out a little bit, so it’s your depth, your unsung heroes that make a difference.” Credit Trotz and general manager Brian MacLellan for infusing that depth into a roster that was decimated by the salary cap last summer. The Capitals lost six regulars from last year’s Presidents’ Trophy-winning team and relied heavily on rookies and bargain-bin veterans. Smith-Pelly, 25, was among the second group, bringing 24 games of playoff experience with Anaheim and Montreal to Washington. Smith-Pelly inked a one-year, two-way deal with the Capitals after his contract was bought out by New Jersey. A spot on Washington’s roster wasn’t a given for Smith-Pelly in training camp. Eight months later, he scored the insurance goal in a 3-1 win over the Golden Knights in Game 3. “It’s crazy,” Smith-Pelly said Saturday, revealing a gaptoothed smile that rivals Ovechkin’s. “If you would have told me in training camp, ‘Hey you’re going to be in the Stanley Cup Final,’ I mean, it’s been a crazy year, just a whirlwind.” At 6 feet and 223 pounds, the

forward has a powerful game but has spent much of his career as a bottom-six option. In the past, he’s played some of his best hockey in the postseason. As a rookie with the Ducks in 2014, Smith-Pelly led the team with five goals in 12 playoff games. Three years before that in the Ontario Hockey League, he topped his junior team with 15 goals and 21 points in 20 games en route to a national title. “I love playing in the playoffs,”

he said after Game 3. “That’s really the only way I can kind of explain it.” Before the finals, Trotz said that physicality and versatility make Smith-Pelly tremendously valuable in the postseason. “He can play a checking role, move up in the lineup,” Trotz said. “There are certain guys, their game translates more in the heavier games, the tight spaces.” Among Capitals forwards, Smith-Pelly ranks third in both

STANLEY CUP FINAL There was no push, no wait-aminute moments, no barrage of goals to leave the Capitals wondering how a freight train fit inside Capital One Arena and then zoomed down the center of their home ice. Instead, the Vegas Golden Knights did what they have rarely done in their inaugural season: They wilted. They spent 60 minutes trying to find themselves and, when the goals and shots and mistakes added up, they were left with a 3-1 loss to the Capitals on Saturday night. This is the first time the Golden Knights have lost backto-back games in the playoffs. Now they trail in a series for just the second time this postseason, 2-1 heading into Game 4 tonight, and need to find the speed and space and scoring spurts that helped them sprint through the regular season and Western

Conference, largely untouched. “We can live with the loss if we’re just not getting the bounces,” Golden Knights forward Ryan Reaves said. “But I think the way we played isn’t good enough for this time of year.” The Golden Knights, however clichéd, did not think they played “their game” in the first two contests. That was mostly due to poor puck management, as they finished with nine giveaways in Game 1 and 12 in Game 2. This kept the Golden Knights from executing two of their defining traits — getting all five players in the offensive zone, and limiting opponents’ odd-man rushes — and it showed as they gave up four goals in a Game 1 win before dropping Game 2. “I feel like this year we haven’t been a team that gave up a lot of odd-man rushes, and we haven’t been a team that gives up a lot of turnovers, either,” center Pierre-Edouard Bellemare said ahead of Game 3. “And the two first games we gave more than we probably gave for the whole playoffs. As soon as the turnover

numbers go down, then you are going to see our game.” There were no glimpses of it Saturday, as Vegas ambled through a sloppy, scoreless first period and was twice bailed out by goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. “We got to get in front of the net, get that rebound or whatever it is,” Golden Knights center Cody Eakin said of how to fix their flat offense. “We’re going to have to change sides, get it up to the point, um … there’s a lot of things we can do better.” There was a small breakthrough at the start of the third, as Capitals goalie Braden Holtby botched a clear and Tomas Nosek tapped it in. But that was it for the Golden Knights. In the final seconds, with Fleury on the bench and an extra skater on the ice, the Golden Knights couldn’t keep an errant pass in the zone. That left forward William Karlsson skating slowly toward the Golden Knights’ bench, in the wrong direction, farther and farther from the goal. JESSE DOUGHERTY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Red alert: D.C. goes Caps crazy

RICKY CARIOTI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

WHAT HAPPENED SATURDAY NIGHT was virtually unprecedented in the last two

decades of Washington sports. A pro team, playing at home and getting ever closer to a title, put on an oppressively dominating performance and never trailed while sending the home fans into spasms of ecstasy. “Most of the fans I see are in their 30s and 40s,” NBC Sports Washington’s Rob Carlin said during the postgame show after Washington’s 3-1 win. “This is a lifetime, they’ve never experienced anything like this. … I mean, these are just great moments that you want to ingrain in your brain forever, and just enjoy this in every sort of way.” Everything about Saturday night was perfect for a celebration. The fact that the Caps won their first Stanley Cup Final game at home, that they took their first Stanley Cup Final series lead, that they did it on a Saturday night with throngs of people outside. The Redskins’ greatest moments came away from D.C., and the city was a different place then. Chinatown as a hangout did not exist. And so these scenes, at a minimum, were 20 or 30 years in the making. Enjoy them. They are good scenes. DAN STEINBERG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Scouts: Murphy doesn’t look ready for majors MLB Daniel Murphy played all nine innings for Class AA Harrisburg on Saturday, which seemed like a good sign. He had three at-bats Friday, and playing back-to-back days was another indication of progress in his return from offseason microfracture surgery to repair right knee cartilage. But according to people who have seen Murphy in person over the last few days, the Nationals’ veteran second baseman does not look ready to return from the disabled list any time soon. He had four errors in the first six games of his rehab assignment. He is not running the bases well. A scout who saw Murphy play this weekend said he was “gimpy” and “struggling to move laterally” while lacking “straight-ahead speed.” Mick Reinhard, who covers the Harrisburg Senators, tweeted video of Murphy that showed the three-time All-Star struggling to finish basic plays and run out ground balls. All weekend, Nats manager Dave Martinez had been matterof-fact about Murphy’s progress. He said Murphy will be reevaluated by team doctors this week. Initially, the mention of a doctor visit combined with extensive playing time in Class AA seemed to suggest that he might be ready

Observers say Daniel Murphy, who had knee surgery, still isn’t moving well.

Braves 4, Nationals 2 Pinch-hitter Charlie Culberson hit a game-ending two-run homer to lift host Atlanta to a 4-2 win over the Nationals on Sunday. to return this week. Now, it seems he might be in line for a more ominous evaluation, though no one has said so, and the club has said all along it wasn’t sure what to expect of Murphy’s recovery. “The good part is he’s playing every day,” Martinez said.

Murphy was not running perfectly when the Nats sent him on his rehab assignment, but director of medical services Harvey Sharman watched all of Murphy’s sprint work closely and seemed content enough. Microfracture surgeries attempt to deal with damaged cartilage by drilling holes in the bone, fostering the growth of new cartilage. Grady Sizemore, a former All-Star for Cleveland, was never the same after the procedure, while Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner has recovered well. As of Sunday, Murphy simply wasn’t ready to play in the majors — and no one could say when he would be. CHELSEA JANES

Packers outside linebacker Clay Matthews said he needs surgery on his nose after getting hit with a line drive during a charity softball game Saturday in Grand Chute, Wis. Matthews was pitching when Packers offensive lineman Lucas Patrick hit a comebacker directly at Matthews’ face, knocking him to the ground. Matthews got up, covered his face with his glove, then walked to the dugout. He tweeted later that he busted his nose and would have surgery after the swelling subsides. He thanked fans for their well-wishes and expressed gratitude that his injury was minor. (AP)

Bryson DeChambeau finally got it right on his third try at the 18th hole and won the Memorial in a playoff Sunday. Transgender models and glamour queens rule the night in the new FX series “Pose.”

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 ‘Cloak & Dagger’ 8 p.m. Thursday on Freeform

Dance to the revolution FX’s ‘Pose’ shines a spotlight on the transgender ballroom scene of 1980s New York

TV REVIEW Now that we’ve left “The Americans” at the end of 1987, it’s time to travel all the way to … 1987 again, where Ryan Murphy et al. have vividly reimagined a dirtier and more interesting New York. It’s a grit-and-greed Gotham where Trump-inspired yuppies rule the day and, by night, organized “houses” of mostly African-American and Latina transgender models and glamour queens fiercely compete at events called “balls” to see whose “realness” seems most real. It’s “Pose,” darlings, a bold yet unsteady extravaganza of music, moves and an identity awareness that emerged long before the firmer solidarity of LGBT. Packed with more speechifying

65%

than dialogue, the series (which premiered Sunday on FX) comes with a mighty long to-do list. Murphy and FX made certain to cast the widest possible net for “Pose’s” ensemble, insisting that transgender characters be played by transgender performers. With that, the show also boasts TV’s largest-ever LGBT cast and crew. Thus ennobled and electrified, the people of “Pose” put forth a dazzling series that is all about cultural course-correction. Mj Rodriguez stars as Blanca, a frustrated member of the House of Abundance, whose demanding mother/leader, Elektra Abundance (Dominique Jackson), is the champion of the ballroom scene. Fed up with Elektra’s orders, Blanca defects and starts

From fringe to forefront “Pose” attempts to lend its characters — all of them wounded in one way or another by society’s gender and sexuality norms — the shape and empathy they never had, creating forthright (if mostly fictional) quasi-history. Think of it as a belated restoration effort. Beautification, not revisionism. H.S.

her own family, House of Evangelista, ensuring Elektra’s wrath. While acquainting a wide TV audience with the basics of a fringe culture, “Pose” also takes on the task of weaving in the uptown story of Stan Bowes (Evan Peters), an eager new junior executive hire in Trump Tower.

With his newfound white-collar prestige and salary, Stan, who has a wife, Patty (Kate Mara), and two kids, acts on a long-suppressed urge and hires a streetwalker named Angel (Indya Moore). That they fall in love is just one of the many stretches of melodrama that keep “Pose” somewhat clumsy and, at times, unsatisfyingly preachy. It’s always been hard to convince Murphy that a little goes a long way, and viewers will have to admit that “Pose’s” weaknesses tend to vanish during the fantastically entertaining ballroom scenes. Madonna was wrong when she said, “Strike a pose, there’s nothing to it.” Turns out, there’s a whole lot to it. HANK STUEVER

Freed after 15 years and just a tween at heart, she must face her psychic pain and forge an adult identity. So the premise is dark. Yet cocreator Tina Fey’s fingerprints are all over it — the dialogue is crammed with timely and silly

and insanely clever jokes. This season, Kimmy (the awesomely upbeat Ellie Kemper) is the HR head at a hightech firm. Told to fire a male co-worker, she tries to soften the blow because she doesn’t want to inflict suffering on anyone. Her tactics — like offering him a smoothie and saying, “This thing isn’t going to suck itself” — lead to a sexual harassment complaint. Sure, it’s funny, but it’s also a provocative way of considering the #MeToo moment. Can someone be accused of sexual harassment when there is no intent? Of course … if that someone is Kimmy. Balancing the pointed

topicality is utter absurdity. In one storyline, aspiring actor Titus Andromedon (an ebullient Tituss Burgess) wants to impress his ex-boyfriend by pretending to star in a fake TV show with Greg Kinnear, who gladly joins the charade. Despite its laughs, the show is a bit creaky. Carol Kane’s landlady Lillian tries too hard to be annoyingly nutty, and the alcoholic robot C.H.E.R.Y.L. is just not that amusing. But Kimmy is still riveting, and this final cycle will delve deeper into her past trauma as she protests a “HouseFlix” documentary that makes her captor (Jon Hamm at his sleaziest) seem like a nice guy. And there’s the promise of a movie to wrap up a character unlike anyone else on TV. Who else would say, “I love eye contact. It’s the handshake of the face.” Here’s to lookin’ at ya, Kimmy Schmidt! Viacom confirmed Saturday that the TV reboot of the 1988 black comedy “Heathers” will not air on Paramount or any of its other properties. The parent company says the subject matter — high school murder and suicide — is not suitable in the current environment after the recent school shootings in Parkland, Fla., and Santa Fe, Texas. “Snobby hot rich chicks always get their way, while the harder working talented magical ladies who don’t fit particular (dumb) beauty or age standards will often be unfairly mistreated.” @ZELDAWILLIAMS, making a case

Saturday on Twitter for Disney antagonists, or “the smart but overlooked three-dimensional characters they called villains.”

“Don’t wanna hear you say that you want heartaches and mistakes ... or to be 2 worlds apart. We don’t want you to want ‘it’ that way.” @BACKSTREETBOYS, explaining the cryptic situation in their iconic ballad “I Want It That Way.” Chrissy Teigen tweeted on Friday asking what the song means, and the Backstreet Boys responded. “That’s the way we want it ... for you to not want it that way,” the group’s official account replied.

“What if Melania just cut her bangs real weird and is waiting for them to grow out?” @JILLTWISS, sharing a lighthearted

theory about Melania Trump, who according to CNN has not been seen in public since May 10. People are coming up with conspiracy theories to explain her absence, but the first lady’s spokeswoman said Friday that Trump is “doing great” after a recent surgery.

“If you’ve never looked at your coworkers like this, you’re the JR Smith.” @IAMSAMKELLER, tweeting about LeBron James’ gesture to teammate JR Smith when Smith failed to make a play, causing the Cavaliers to lose Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday. LeBron’s annoyed reaction became a meme. @hmfaigen compared the moment to: “when you leave all the doors open but your dog poops in the house anyway.”

Uber driver Manuel Dias came forward to describe the November incident, in which he and Cumberbatch got out of a car to physically confront four men attempting to steal a delivery man’s bike. “He seemed to know exactly what he was doing,” Dias said. “He was very brave. … I think [the muggers] also recognized it was Benedict and ran away.” Deliveroo, the U.K. company that employed the victim, tweeted Saturday, “Thank you Benedict Cumberbatch for your brave actions.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)
