The one graduating student on a tiny island in Massachusetts is receiving the star treatment. Actress and comedian Jenny Slate will speak at this month’s graduation ceremony for Cuttyhunk Elementary School, a one-room schoolhouse on an island with a year-round population of around 12. Twenty-five babies took to the red carpet in a crawling race Saturday in Vilnius, Lithuania, as their parents, grandparents and onlookers cheered the spectacle. It was the 20th annual event staged by a local radio station to mark International Children’s Day on June 1. Teams waved toys and even banged baby food cans to spur on the 7- to 11-month-old babies. An 11-month-old boy named Ignas crawled a few yards to reach the finish line first. (AP)
A hungry alligator crashed a picnic by a Florida lake on Thursday. Taylor Forte had planned the picnic for her fiance, Trevor Walters, at Lake Alice, before Walters was to leave for the Marines. Walters said they ran when the gator sprinted onto the beach. It ate a block of cheese, some salami, half a melon and a pound of grapes. Walters said the worst part was watching the gator consume a big bowl of guacamole — including the bowl itself. (AP)

‘This is part of our culture’ THE DISTRICT Musicians, city council members and community activists joined outside the John A. Wilson Building on Tuesday to say go-go isn’t going anywhere. A new bill, introduced by D.C. Council member Kenyan McDuffie, D-Ward 5, seeks to enshrine go-go as the “official music of the District of Columbia.” Of course, go-go is already the unofficial music of the District of Columbia. Born in D.C.’s live-music scene of the 1970s, go-go earned its name from one of the genre’s founders, the late Chuck Brown, who said he was trying to keep people on the dance floor with a beat that “just goes and goes.” The music’s blend of percussive funk, blues, salsa, gospel and soul music has pulsed through the air at block parties, concerts and on a street corner where a neighborhood electronics shop has long doubled as a go-go hot spot. In April, the store — a Metro PCS vendor in Shaw that has been playing go-go from its

outdoor speakers since 1995 — suddenly went quiet. A resident of the luxury apartments down the block from the electronics store complained about the neighborhood’s signature soundtrack, eventually prompting T-Mobile to ask owner Donald Campbell to turn off the congas and timbales. The ensuing uproar gave rise to days of protest concerts and a new rallying cry reverberating around the city: #DontMuteDC. Even after Campbell’s music returned days later, the hashtag

slogan remains a firm stand against forces of gentrification as the District struggles to maintain its identity and culture amid an influx of newcomers and changing neighborhoods. McDuffie said he found it inspiring. “It’s important for people to not have to wonder or guess about how important go-go is to the District of Columbia,” McDuffie said. “Especially with the anxiety right now with black people and people of color being displaced, it’s important that we take the steps we can take to enshrine this history. This is part of our culture.” For the last decade, go-go has been in decline. But McDuffie said he hopes that by making go-go the District’s official jam, the music and the culture that surrounds it may soon see a revival. His legislation would “require the mayor to implement a program to support, preserve and archive go-go music and its history.” “As long as I’ve known, it has galvanized young people across [D.C.]. So it shouldn’t be targeted, because that’s not what it’s about. That shouldn’t be what it’s about,” McDuffie said. MARISSA J. LANG

Gov. Ralph Northam, center, urges the General Assembly to take up gun control bills at a news conference Tuesday.
‘Votes and laws, not thoughts and prayers’ Northam challenges Republicans to take up gun control measures RICHMOND Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said Tuesday he is calling for a special session of the General Assembly to take up gun control bills after Friday’s mass shooting in Virginia Beach that killed 12. “We must give Virginians the action they deserve,” said Northam, who intends to schedule the session for late June. Northam was joined by Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax and Attorney General Mark Herring, all Democrats, at a news conference with more than a dozen other Democratic leaders to challenge the Republicans who control the General Assembly and who have repeatedly stifled efforts to consider any form of gun control. “Let Virginia show the nation that we can respond to tragedy with decisive action,” he said. Northam said he wanted Republican leaders to bring gun control bills to the full General Assembly for a vote. Bills sponsored

House Speaker Kirk Cox, R-Colonial Heights, called Northam’s action “hasty and suspect.” While he said the GOP is ready to take up the issue of gun violence, he noted that the governor cannot “specify what the General Assembly chooses to consider or how we do our work.”
Cox said Republicans want tougher penalties for those who use guns to commit crimes. “We believe addressing gun violence starts with holding criminals accountable for their actions, not infringing on the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens,” Cox said. Northam is opposed to mandatory minimums because he says they disproportionately impact African Americans. The governor’s office says it will work with individual legislators to introduce bans on assault weapons, silencers and magazines that hold more than 10 bullets, as well as reinstating the one handgun-a-month limit, requiring reporting of lost or stolen firearms and allowing authorities to seize weapons from someone a court deems to be a threat. Polls show Virginians increasingly favor tightening the state’s gun laws, which are among the nation’s most permissive. A June 2017 Quinnipiac University poll found that 91% of Virginians supported requiring background checks for all gun buyers. GREGORY SCHNEIDER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

City considers raft of new bills Decriminalizing sex work
Legalizing medical marijuana
Under a bill introduced Tuesday by D.C. Council member Brianne Nadeau, D-Ward 1, the city’s Board of Elections would mail ballots for all elections to registered voters, who could then return them completed between 15 and 45 days prior to an election. Residents could also drop off ballots at designated centers. According to a Curbed report, D.C. would join Colorado, Washington and Oregon — all of which conduct all elections by mail — as well as close to two dozen other states that conduct some elections by mail.
Emboldened by national advocacy, four D.C. Council members on Tuesday co-introduced a bill that would remove criminal penalties for selling and purchasing sex in the District. According to a Washington City Paper report, bill proponents argue that sex workers who fear arrest lack incentives to report trafficking and coercion, which would remain illegal under the proposed law. Some bill critics, the City Paper reported, worry that decriminalization will limit the potential to prosecute traffickers.
The D.C. Council is considering prohibiting the city from discriminating against current or prospective government workers for being medical marijuana patients. City agencies currently can set their own policies on the issue. According to a DCist report, Council member David Grosso, D-At Large, this week had planned to introduce identical emergency legislation, which would have taken effect more quickly. But Grosso on Tuesday backed off, according to DCist, citing insufficient support from colleagues. (EXPRESS)

U.S. poor will feel tariffs’ toll ECONOMY The biggest victims of President Trump’s tariffs won’t necessarily be Mexicans or Chinese or young urbanites who will have to pay more for avocado toast. The people likely to pay the steepest price for Trump’s attempts to bend Mexico and China to his will are poor Americans, who already live close to the financial edge and could have to pay more for everyday purchases. For many low-income households, tariffs “are a tax on their consumption, and by raising the cost of their consumption, they will likely have to cut back,” said Jay Shambaugh, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. The president last week announced plans to impose a 5% tax on Mexican imports unless that country halts all unauthorized border crossings into the United States. The tariffs would rachet up to 25% in the coming months if Mexico fails to stop the flow of immigrants and asylum-seekers. The threat of higher tariffs follows a decision in May to hike tariffs to 25% from 10% on Chinese imports, a move designed to increase pressure on China to agree to more favorable trading terms with the United States. But rather than force concessions from China and Mexico, the tariffs could boomerang on U.S. consumers and companies. The taxes could raise the price of

fruits and vegetables and disrupt the supply chain for auto parts in ways that could hurt vehicle sales. That would be hard on people like Walter Rogers, a 65-yearold retiree living in Phoenix on a Social Security check he says is about $700 a month. “We just got a cost-of-living raise. Now they’re going to raise prices?” Rogers said as he walked to Walmart. “Hardly anybody can afford this.” Executives at Walmart and dollar-store chains, which import much of their merchandise and serve many low-income
Trump unswayed President Trump warned Tuesday that he will impose a 5% tariff on Mexican imports starting next week, saying Republican lawmakers would be “foolish” to try to stop him. His comments suggested that the imposition of the tariffs on June 10 is nearly inevitable, despite pleas from GOP lawmakers to reconsider. customers, have warned that tariffs could lead to higher prices. A 2017 research paper coauthored by Shambaugh found that tariffs would eat up a greater proportion of the incomes of the bottom 10% of households. The burden would be much lighter for those higher up on the financial ladder. The findings — which are backed by most economists — stand in sharp contrast to Trump’s misleading claim that foreign countries are paying the tariffs. In reality, the taxes are passed along to consumers and companies in the form of higher prices and reduced economic activity that can stifle overall growth. There are two major reasons why the poor face an outsized burden, Shambaugh said. First, poorer Americans tend to spend all of their income, while wealthier Americans have enough income left over to save and invest. That leaves the poor more exposed to higher prices from import taxes. Second, the wealthy are more likely to splurge on services such as farm-to-table restaurant meals or gym memberships that are not subject to tariffs at all. But poorer Americans spend a higher percentage of their income on basics such as clothing and groceries that are more likely to be imported and subject to tariffs. Report: Census undercount of minorities likely WASHINGTON With the 2020 census count less than a year away, a new report says undercounting certain populations will be likely, despite the best efforts of the U.S. Census Bureau, nonprofits and state and local officials to encourage participation. Nationwide, the decennial census could fail to count anywhere from 900,000 to 4 million people, with blacks, Hispanics and children younger than 5 most vulnerable to being overlooked, according to estimates released Tuesday by the Urban Institute, a think tank that conducts social and economic research. Undercounting could diminish power and money in some areas for the next decade. The 2020 census determines the allocation of more than $675 billion in federal spending on schools, transportation and health care, as well which states gain or lose U.S. congressional seats. Adding to concerns about undercounting: The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule later this month on whether the census form will have a question about whether respondents are citizens. The U.S. Justice Department claims it’s needed to protect the voting rights of minorities who are citizens, but opponents say it will suppress the count of immigrants who fear law enforcement will get the information. States with large Hispanic populations also will be undercounted, opponents say. MIKE SCHNEIDER (AP)

D-Day memories fade
On 75th anniversary, some worry lessons from WWII are lost as more veterans die For the first time in 75 years, Royal Navy D-Day veteran Matthew Toner, 93, sets foot Tuesday on Juno Beach near where his landing craft beached during the Normandy landings, in Courseulles-sur-Mer, France.

D-DAY REMEMBRANCE One more funeral, one less witness to the world’s worst war. Bernard Dargols lived almost long enough to join the celebrations this week marking 75 years since the D-Day, 75 years since he waded onto Omaha Beach as an American soldier to help liberate France from the Nazis who persecuted his Jewish family. Just shy of his 99th birthday, Dargols died last month. An ever-smaller number of veterans will stand on Normandy’s shores Thursday for D-Day’s 75th anniversary. Many will salute fallen comrades from their wheelchairs. As each year passes, more firsthand history is lost. President Trump and other world leaders will pay homage to the more than 2 million American, British, Canadian and other Allied forces involved in the D-Day operation on June 6, 1944, and the ensuing battle for Normandy that helped pave the way for Hitler’s defeat. Dargols outlived most of them, and knew the importance of sustaining their memory. “I’m convinced that we have to talk about the war to children, so that they understand how much they need to preserve the peace,” he wrote in a 2012 memoir. Until the end, Dargols battled complacency, intolerance and Holocaust deniers who claim that D-Day was “just a movie.” In recent years, “seeing any type of violence, of anti-Semitism and racism, either in France in Europe or in the U.S.” really upset him, granddaughter Caroline Jolivet said. Veterans’ families and military memorials are laboring against time to record survivors’ stories for posterity. In history’s biggest amphibious invasion, on that fateful June 6,
some 160,000 Allied forces came ashore to launch Operation Overlord to wrest Normandy from Nazi control. More than 4,000 Allied forces were killed on that day alone. Nearly half a million people were killed on both sides by the time the Allies liberated Paris in August 1944. It’s unclear exactly how many D-Day veterans are alive today. The survivors are now in their 90s or 100s. Of the 73,000 Americans who took part, just 30 are expected to be in France for this week’s anniversary. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that about 348 American World War II veterans die every day. All but three of the 177 French forces involved in D-Day are gone. Every day, the names of the departed accumulate, tweeted by veterans groups, published in local newspapers. Dargols might have made it to Normandy this year. It meant a lot to him. Jolivet, his granddaughter,
Two days of ceremonies Starting today, veterans and world leaders, including President Trump, will mark the 75th anniversary of the June 6, 1944, D-Day landing. The events will begin in Portsmouth, England, where the invasion was launched, and then move across the English Channel to France, where Allied forces began to recapture Western Europe from the Nazis. As part of the commemorations, some 300 veterans are traveling back to France on a six-day cruise sponsored by the Royal British Legion, the U.K.’s largest veterans charity. They traveled to Dunkirk on Monday, remembering the evacuation of British forces after the fall of France in 1940. The veterans will be in Portsmouth today before sailing to Normandy on Thursday. told AP that he would have had a clear message for the D-Day anniversary: “Never take democracy for granted. Dictatorship is
always a bad solution. Violence is always a bad solution. Keep democracy alive. Fight for democracy, for freedom, for peace.” The cultural director at Normandy’s World War II memorial in Caen, Isabelle Bournier, frets about this fading message, as she watches schoolchildren cycle through her museum every day. “The parents and grandparents of 13-year-olds today didn’t experience the war, so the family stories, the family history — where helmets are brought out, where we spoke about what it was like — has been lost,” she said. “They don’t know the names of the landing beaches,” she said. “Pupils spend less time studying World War II than they did 30 years ago, and so the role of D-Day has been reduced.” Dargols himself worried about the day when all the veterans will be gone. “It could start again,” he wrote in his memoir. “We must be vigilant, at all times.” ANGELA CHARLTON (AP)

D-DAY REMEMBRANCE Roughly 2,000 African American troops are believed to have hit the shores of Normandy in various capacities on June 6, 1944. Serving in a U.S. military still segregated by race, they encountered discrimination both in the service and when they came home. The only African American combat unit that day was the 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion, whose job was to set up explosive-rigged balloons to deter German planes. A member of the unit, William Dabney, described what they encountered on D-Day in a 2009 interview during the invasion’s 65th anniversary. “The firing was furious on the beach. I was picking up dead bodies and I was looking at the mines blowing up soldiers. ... I didn’t know if I was going to make it or not,” said Dabney, then 84, who passed away last year. After defending their country in Europe, many black troops were met with discrimination yet again at home. Johnnie Jones Sr., 99, was a warrant officer in a unit responsible for unloading equipment and supplies onto Normandy. “I couldn’t sit with the soldiers I had been on the battlefield with. I had to go to the back of the bus,” said Jones, above, who went on to become a lawyer and civil rights activist. “Those are the things that come back and haunt you.” REBECCA SANTANA (AP)

Veterans explain why they’re back World War II veterans returned this week to the D-Day battlefields where they saw friends killed and were scarred physically and mentally for life. Here’s why they came back 75 years later. (AP) Jerry Deitch, 93, of Nevada He had always refused to go back, but he decided he had to see where good friends died and revisit the spot where he was hit by a piece of shrapnel that left a fist-sized dent in his helmet. Deitch was 18 years old when he landed. “After the first day I felt like I was 30,” he said. “You grow up fast.”
Leila Morrison, 97, of Colorado The last time she saw Omaha Beach was in 1944, when she landed on it to nurse injured soldiers three months after D-Day. “I want to tell … the whole world how great it is that we do have our freedom, and we have so many privileges in America that other places don’t have,” she said.
Russell Pickett, 94, of Tennessee He’s made several return visits to Normandy and says they help him cope with the horrors he’s lived with since he was 19. “I can’t say that I really enjoy the whole thing, you know?” he said. “But … you can see kind of what we was fighting for and, you know, that makes a little difference.”

Team USA stops in D.C.
Kawhi Leonard, left, finished Game 2 with 34 points and 14 rebounds.
RAPTORS AT WARRIORS | GAME 3: 9 TONIGHT, ABC
‘It just comes naturally’
Kawhi remains unfazed by the high stakes of the finals and his off-court distractions NBA FINALS Toronto star Kawhi Leonard has more than a few things on his mind these days. He’ll be a free agent in a few weeks. He’s headed to federal court with Nike. He’s clearly dealing with something that isn’t right in his lower body, though he and the team continue to insist that he’s fine. And, oh, there’s the NBA Finals, with Leonard and the Raptors taking on the two-time defending champion Warriors in Game 3 of a tied series tonight. All that would overload some people. Leonard, however, isn’t like most people. He’s unfazed. “I think it just comes naturally,” Leonard said. “All NBA players, there’s so much distractions from you playing in high school to college to now
becoming a pro, it’s probably just pretty much second-nature at this point.” Leonard is famously, almost mythically, quiet. He tends to give short answers during news conferences. He’s not a socialmedia guy. He rarely makes news. So it was an odd look on Monday when he — his attorneys, anyway — filed a federal lawsuit in Southern California against Nike over the rights to his distinctive “klaw” logo, one Leonard says he drew himself in either 2011 or 2012. “It happened a long time ago,” Leonard said of the disagreement between him and Nike — and the lawsuit shows that the battle over the logo has indeed gone on for some time, then ramped up to get to this point. “You guys are just finding out.
Warriors battling injury Klay Thompson practiced with the Warriors on Tuesday, two days after straining his hamstring, and is listed as questionable for Game 3. Kevon Looney will miss the remainder of the finals with a cartilage fracture near his collarbone. Kevin Durant, who hasn’t played since his May 8 injury, did not practice Tuesday and has been ruled out for Game 3. (AP)
It’s not a big worry of mine.” In other words, he’s played through that particular portion of off-court drama throughout these playoffs. He’s handled it just fine. The Raptors are here largely because of Leonard. Even though six bad minutes that became an 18-0 Golden State
run in Game 2 — “the quarter from hell,” Raptors coach Nick Nurse called it — ultimately cost Toronto its chance at a 2-0 series lead and retaining homecourt advantage, the Eastern Conference champions don’t seem uneasy. “It’s going to be even harder on the road,” Raptors guard Fred VanVleet said. “But we’re capable and we know what we bring to the table.” The Raptors have already rallied from 2-1 series deficits twice in these playoffs. No team in the current 16-team postseason format, which the NBA went to in 1984, has overcome three of those in the same season. “We want to be the first to four,” Raptors guard Kyle Lowry said. “Every game is an urgent game.” TIM REYNOLDS (AP)

3 Who pulls the strings? Star playmaker Christian Pulisic won’t link up with the U.S. until after this friendly, giving Cristian Roldan or Sebastian Lletget a shot at the advanced midfield role.
2 Defensive opportunity Injuries to defenders John Brooks and DeAndre Yedlin have opened up slots on the Gold Cup squad, with Cameron Carter-Vickers and Nick Lima among those looking to prove their case.
1 Altidore returns Striker Jozy Altidore, below, is back with the U.S. for the first time since 2017. Look for him to step straight into the starting lineup. Gyasi Zardes and Josh Sargent will also push for minutes up top.

Federer advances to meet Nadal in semis
In his first trip to Roland Garros since 2015, Roger Federer wrapped up a 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4, rain-interrupted victory over Stan Wawrinka, his friend and Swiss Olympic and Davis Cup teammate, to make his way to the French Open semifinals. And what a semifinal it will be: On Friday, Federer will meet old rival Rafael Nadal, the 11-time French Open champion. It will be their 39th career meeting and their sixth in Paris. (AP)

REDSKINS Seven-time Pro Bowler Trent Williams missed the first day of the Redskins’ mandatory minicamp Tuesday, as the left tackle looks to negotiate a new contract with the team. Williams has two seasons remaining on a fiveyear, $66 million deal that expires after the 2020 Williams season. The contract extension made him the highest-paid tackle in NFL history when it was signed in 2015. His base salary is $11 million in 2019 and $12.5 million in 2020. The total value of his deal ranks fourth in the league among left tackles, but his annual average salary of $13.2 million ranks sixth.

Gruden: Foster also tore LCL Redskins linebacker Reuben Foster tore his lateral collateral ligament in addition to his ACL at the first OTA practice, coach Jay Gruden said Tuesday. The LCL injury will make Foster’s recovery more complicated.
He is expected to miss this upcoming season and return in 2020.
Ryan: Defense ‘ultra-talented’ Inside linebackers coach Rob Ryan, who has overseen some very good and very bad defenses as a coordinator in New Orleans, Dallas, Cleveland and Oakland, thinks Washington could become one of the NFL’s stingiest units after an up-and-down 2018. “I knew this was a top-five defense going in,” Ryan said last week on NBC Sports Washington’s “Redskins Talk” podcast. “I know w it had a few hiccups at the end d there when there was so many in-juries, but this is an ultra-talented d defense. We have an excellentt coaching staff and we’re gonna do a great job. I have no doubt aboutt it.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

NEW RELEASE
Rhett gets a little less lovey-dovey
The singer listened to her heart for her first pop album since 2013 MUSIC Feeling “lost” after Donald Trump won the presidential election, Sara Bareilles found herself in a meditation class to help deal with the new American reality. “I felt like the world was on fire and I didn’t have any tools to just cope with the idea that I was in a catastrophe,” she says. The one thing she could do? Write songs. Her emotions, combined with navigating through an increasingly divided country, led to her latest album, “Amidst the Chaos.” Released in April, the album marks her return to pop music after a nearly six-year hiatus. It follows 2013’s “The Blessed Unrest,” which boasted the successful single “Brave” and scored her a Grammy nomination for album of the year. During that gap, she wrote music for and later starred in the Broadway musical “Waitress.” She’s earned two Tony
Award nominations and released the theater album “What’s Inside: Songs From Waitress” in 2015. Bareilles said theater “took over my whole life,” and she wanted to write music for herself again. That’s when she got in touch with iconic producer T Bone Burnett, who has won 13 Grammys and an Oscar. “The algorithms may place her in more of a pop place with Katy Perry or something like that. [But] as an artist, as a songwriter, she’s much closer to Dylan,” Burnett says. With “Chaos,” Bareilles is speaking out more than ever. “I turn 40 this year,” she says. “When I look back on my life, I want to feel like I was outspoken for the things that really fall into my belief system and the causes and the people that I believe deserve advocacy. I really want to be someone who speaks up for them.” The Bareilles-Burnett combo has been decades in the making, even if he was unaware. “He’s been on my bucket list my whole life,” she says. “Wrote letters to

him when I was in my teens.” Burnett helmi ng the project gave her the opportunity to sit at ‘Amidst a master’s foot- the Chaos’ Sara Bareilles steps. “I had a little journal with me and there were so many bits of wisdom. And every time T Bone would say something, it sounded like a freakin’ fortune cookie.” Burnett, 71, says Bareilles’ song “Orpheus,” about being fearless and hopeful in a chaotic world, is “one of the best songs I’ve ever heard.” The confidence Burnett
stirred up gave Bareilles, who will launch a tour this fall, the freedom to try things she had never accomplished before. For instance, her song “Saint Honesty” was recorded in one take. While there are songs like “Armor,” birthed from her Women’s March participation, it’s still an album filled with stories from the heart. “Love has always been my deepest motivator,” says Bareilles, who wrote the track “Poetry by Dead Men” about her boyfriend. “I think that if there’s any one message that I believe is worth sending — it’s that to love and be loved is the greatest gift.”
Country music star Thomas Rhett has fully embraced his reputation for being the guy who is always writing romantic songs inspired by his wife, Lauren, due to his hit parade of multiplatinum love songs like “Die a Happy Man” and “Marry Me.” Rhett’s challenge going into his fourth record — the 16-track “Center Point Road,” out Friday — is to be less gushy and more relatable. “I’m trying to write my love songs with a little more depth, rather than our life is rainbows and fairy tales,” says Rhett, 29. “It was cool to write love songs with a little more meat attached to the bone on this record.” KRISTIN M. WHAT THE HELL
You’ve got it wall wrong
Many Broadway theatergoers taking in “Hadestown,” Anais Mitchell’s Tony-nominated retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, assume the song “Why We Build the Wall” is a reference to President Trump and his fixation on a southern border wall. Actually, Mitchell wrote the song — with its lyric “The wall keeps out the enemy” — back in 2006. Still, every night, “You can just feel the shiver go through the audience,” director Rachel Chavkin says. (AP)

Producers investigate who pirated a feed of reigning champ’s loss TELEVISION This past weekend, “Jeopardy!” executive producer Harry Friedman was looking forward to Monday, when millions of viewers would eagerly tune in to see whether phenom James Holzhauer would break champion Ken Jennings’ record winnings. Holzhauer
needed only about $58,000, so it seemed like a distinct possibility. Then, Sunday afternoon, Friedman and his fellow producers received disturbing news: Somehow, someone had “pirated” the feed of the episode. A clip was leaked on the internet showing Holzhauer losing in dramatic fashion, falling just short of the $2.5 million that Jennings won over 74 games in 2004. “Somebody alerted us that they had seen it on YouTube.

‘Jeopardy!’ leak may lead to action James Holzhauer’s incredible run on “Jeopardy!” came to an end Monday after his 33rd game.
By the time we saw it, it already had 2,000 views,” Friedman said in an interview. The footage quickly spread to other social media sites.

“I feel bad for the viewers. It’s not fair,” he continued. “I’m not sure what’s gained by doing something like that, other than some malicious intent. It doesn’t really benefit anybody.” While Friedman said he “can’t say at this point” who posted the footage, producers have a good idea of what happened. “We think we know where and who and how,” he said, adding that the show will take “very, very, very appropriate” action against those responsible. Nonetheless, Friedman was happy to see the excited response Monday from fans who were captivated by Holzhauer’s astonishing run. clues and wagering huge amounts on Daily Doubles and Final Jeopardy became must-see TV. “I think it reinforces that excellence really has no limit and that there are different ways to play the game,” Friedman said. “But your strategy is only as good as your ability to come up with the correct response once you hit that signaling button.” Holzhauer was bested on the episode broadcast Monday by Emma Boettcher, a University of Chicago librarian who won by nearly $22,000. Friedman, who has been executive producer since 1999, described Holzhauer as a bit “shell-shocked” that his “Jeopardy!” run was finally over. EMILY YAHR (THE WASHINGTON POST)
