A Philadelphia teen’s mom took his prom to the max last week, renting or borrowing a camel, tons of sand and exotic cars. He brought three dates in custom gowns and wore three outfits himself. Saudia Shuler said she had thought of sending her son, Johnny, to Dubai for a visit. Instead, she spent $25,000 to bring Dubai to Philly. She had promised an epic prom night for her son after she was treated for cancer and a stroke. (AP)

Italian authorities are under fire for letting one of the country’s most-wanted mob bosses greet his fans en route to jail. Police arrested Giuseppe Giorgi in a bunker in his home Friday in San Luca, a base of the Calabrian ‘Ndrangheta mob. A news video showed police jumping for joy after the arrest. But another showed them letting an uncuffed Giorgi greet well-wishers as he was led away. One reached out for Giorgi’s hand — and kissed it. (AP)

Trumps make foray into D.C. social scene

President Trump and first lady Melania attend a gala Sunday at the historic Ford’s Theatre.

heavy on CEOs, lawmakers and the city’s professional-partying class. The exclusive mingle for donors at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. is so important that when the Obamas weren’t available for last year’s shindig, the theater canceled the whole evening. “I am proud to continue the tradition in honor of such a historic and cherished landmark,” Melania Trump said in a statement.

Though they have entertained at the White House and Mar-aLago, Trump has skipped the handful of premiere events that a president typically attends, Washington Life senior editor Kevin Chaffee noted. First, Trump snubbed the annual dinner put on by the Alfalfa Club, a group of corporate execs, military brass and senior pols. And he famously turned down the White House correspondents’ dinner in April, something no president had done since Ronald Reagan (who declined only because he’d been shot). Trump’s decision to attend the Ford’s gala was seen as a sign that perhaps the unpredictable leader is prepared to engage in at least some of the social rites of the swamp he routinely derides. “This should certainly give hope to the folks at the Kennedy Center that he and the first lady will attend the honors gala in December,” Chaffee said, mentioning another event at which the president’s attendance is a long-standing tradition. THE DISTRICT President Trump is no dewyeyed debutante, but Sunday marked his coming-out party. The noted homebody — since coming to Washington, he had socialized only at the White House and at Trump-branded properties — attended his first big outing amid the city’s social and philanthropic crowd, the annual gala raising money for Ford’s Theatre, the historic venue where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. Trump and his wife, Melania, hosted a warmup reception before a show at the downtown theater, which marked the return of a tradition that dates back to the Carter administration. Metro: SafeTrack a success

THE DISTRICT Twenty days from the anticipated conclusion of SafeTrack, Metro is hailing the year-long program as a success, saying the aggressive, round-the-clock maintenance has shrunk the proportion of defective track, reduced instances of smoke and fire and cut service disruptions in the troubled subway system. But for riders, tangible benefits from the repair regimen remain unseen, officials and experts say, with on-time performance and customer satisfaction still lagging well below target at 69 percent, according to the latest figures. SafeTrack’s built-in disruptions have certainly fueled the perception of decreased reliability, but continued unrelated chronic breakdowns have also contributed to a trend that has driven away customers in record numbers over the past year. In a new report to be presented to Metro’s board of directors Thursday, Metro says SafeTrack was successful in its effort to collapse three years of repair work into one, an overarching goal of the program that launched last June. As a result, the percentage of defective wooden crossties, which secure the running rails at the proper spacing in the system, has dropped from 22 percent to 2 percent, the agency said. Smoke and fire incidents have

been reduced by 16 percent, and rail service disruptions have decreased, meaning there were nearly a third fewer emergency shuttle bridges required than before, the agency said. (Metro also ran more limited service than in years past, with 16 rounds of extended shutdowns or single-tracking. SafeTrack impacted 5,800 of the 7,000 hours Metro was in service since the program’s launch, according to the report.) “Overall, the SafeTrack program has been very successful in terms of the safety performance, the work completed and the schedule achieved,” Metro says in its presentation. “The past year has been the most aggressive renewal program of [Metro’s] history and it was achieved through tremendous hard work

and cooperation across the region — from our employees, our riders and our stakeholders.” The program cost an estimated $150 million to $160 million, Metro spokeswoman Sherri Ly said Monday. Deterioration of the long

wooden beams was cited in the July 2016 derailment outside East Falls Church, which led to a slew of firings after an investigation revealed a pattern of employees in the agency’s track inspection department falsifying reports. As a result of its aggressive SafeTrack regimen, Metro said, the agency performed 3.7 times the usual amount of track repairs at roughly 2½ times the cost of its usual annual track repair budget, improving “cost efficiency” by 50 percent. The Federal Transit Administration, which assumed safety oversight of the rail system in October 2015, did not respond to a reporter’s query asking if it accepted Metro’s findings or agreed with its assessment that SafeTrack was “very successful.” FAIZ SIDDIQUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Trump signals push for drilling in the Atlantic REGION The Trump administration is seeking permission to use seismic air guns to find oil and gas formations deep underneath the Atlantic Ocean floor, a reversal of Obama administration policy that is outraging environmental groups and some East Coast lawmakers. The National Marine Fisheries Service said Monday it is seeking permits under the Marine Mammal Protection Act for five companies to use air guns for seismic surveys in the Mid-Atlantic, from Delaware to central Florida. Under Trump’s order, the Interior Department is reviewing applications by five energy companies that were rejected by the Obama administration. The air guns are so loud they can disturb, injure or even kill whales, sea turtles and other marine life. Environmental groups and many East Coast lawmakers oppose the surveys, complaining that air-gun noise can injure marine mammals and harm commercial fishing and tourism. The oil and gas industry has pushed for the surveys, which would map potential drilling sites. No surveys have been conducted in the region for at least 30 years. More than 125 East Coast cities and towns, a range of commercial and recreational fishing groups and an alliance representing 40,000 businesses have publicly opposed air-gun blasting. Noose found in Southeast prompts community rally

Requests for absentee ballots in Virginia’s Democratic primary contests are about twice as high as they are for the Republican primaries. The nonprofit Virginia Public Access Project’s data report shows requests for absentee ballots were heavy in large college towns. Most students will be out of class when the June 13 primaries occur. In the 2016 presidential primaries, requests for Democratic and Republican absentee ballots were about equal. This year, most interest has been focused on the Democratic gubernatorial contest between Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam and former congressman Tom Perriello. (AP)

Mayor Muriel Bowser on Monday signed an executive order reaffirming D.C.’s commitment to the Paris climate agreement. She is one of nearly 200 mayors who committed to upholding the climate deal after President Donald Trump announced last week that the U.S. would withdraw from it. McAuliffe said Monday that Virginia is joining the U.S. Climate Alliance, a bipartisan group started by the governors of California, New York and Washington. (AP)

Community members have rallied in Southeast D.C. to denounce the hanging of a noose near an elementary school in a historically black neighborhood. The noose found last week near Anne Beers Elementary School is one of several that have been found in the city recently. Police Chief Peter Newsham and D.C. Council member Vincent Gray spoke to a diverse crowd of more than 100 people who gathered for a prayer service Sunday. Newsham said the hanging of the noose is being investigated as a hate crime. Mayor Muriel Bowser said the city does not “take these messages of hate lightly.” (AP)

Police ID 2 of 3 assailants in London Bridge attack

PLUSH LIFE

ALASTAIR GRANT (AP)

LONDON British police named two of the three men who left a trail of bloodshed with a van and knife in central London and appealed for the public’s help Monday to learn more about their movements in the days leading up to the deadly rampage that killed seven people and left dozens wounded. Khuram Shazad Butt was a 27-year-old Pakistan-born Briton known to authorities, according to a statement issued by London police. Neighbors said Monday that Butt had been filmed unfurling a black flag resembling the one used by the Islamic State group. Another neighbor said she called the police 18 months ago after she allegedly saw him trying to lure local youngsters to join his jihadist campaign. Rachid Redouane — who had claimed to be Moroccan and Libyan, variously gave his age as 30 or 25 and also used Elkhdar as a surname — was not on the radar of police or intelligence agencies until the attack. Both were shot dead, along with a third attacker who has not been identified, by officers called to the chaotic scene on Saturday night. Ten others who were arrested in the east London neighborhood of Barking — where the two named suspects had lived — remained

in custody. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack. The attack launched by three men in the London Bridge area Saturday night is shaping the final days of an election campaign, focusing attention on Prime Minister Theresa May’s role in reducing the ranks of police officers. Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said he supported those calling for May to resign because of her role reducing police staffing during her tenure as home secretary, though he said the

best remedy was to vote her out. May, under fire because of three major attacks in Britain in the last three months, said Corbyn wasn’t fit to safeguard Britain’s security at a time of heightened threat. It is not clear how having more police on the beat would have prevented the attack, since the men were shot dead within eight minutes, but the issue of police cuts has come back to haunt May, who served for six years at home secretary under her predecessor David Cameron before she became prime minister last year. During that time, police numbers dropped by roughly 20,000 officers, and the number of armed officers has fallen as well. GREGORY

Qatar at the center of new Mideast crisis MIDDLE EAST Saudi Arabia and other Arab powers severed diplomatic ties Monday with Qatar and moved to isolate the energy-rich nation, accusing it of supporting terrorist groups and backing Iran. The decision plunged Qatar into chaos and ignited the biggest diplomatic crisis in the Gulf since the 1991 war against Iraq. Qatar criticized the move as a “violation of its sovereignty.” It has denied supporting militant groups and described the crisis

as being fueled by “absolute fabrications” stemming from a recent hack of its state-run news agency, which resulted in what it called fake comments from its ruling emir praising Shiite-ruled Iran. The Sunni kingdom of Saudi Arabia sees Iran as its No. 1 enemy and a threat to regional stability. Saudi Arabia closed its land border with Qatar — Qatar’s only land border — through which the tiny international travel hub imports most of its food. At least 4 Arab nations cut diplomatic ties with country over Iran, ISIS

Airlines and EgyptAir announced they would suspend service to its capital, Doha, the venue for the 2022 World Cup. Yemen also severed ties with Qatar, as did the Maldives and one of conflict-torn Libya’s competing governments.

The move came just two weeks after President Trump visited Saudi Arabia and vowed to improve ties with Riyadh and Cairo to combat terrorism and contain Iran. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the Arab states’ move

was rooted in long-standing differences and urged a resolution. Saudi Arabia said the decision was due to Qatar’s “embrace of various terrorist and sectarian groups aimed at destabilizing the region,” including al-Qaeda, ISIS, the Muslim Brotherhood and groups supported by Iran. The Gulf countries ordered their citizens out of Qatar and gave Qataris abroad 14 days to return home. The nations also planned to cut sea traffic. The U.S. military said it has “no plans to change [its] posture in Qatar,” which is home to alUdeid Air Base, the forward headquarters of the military’s Central Command. JON GAMBRELL (AP)

Privatize air traffic control? Opponents: Trump plan Infrastructure week President Trump chose to make would give too much the case to privatize the nation’s air influence to the airlines traffic control system at the start TRANSPORTATION President Trump said Monday that the nation’s air traffic control system needs a modern makeover and urged Congress to approve a privatization plan that he said would increase safety and reduce wait times for passengers. Dismissing the current system as an anachronism, Trump said air traffic control operations need to be separated from the Federal Aviation Administration, an approach that U.S. airlines have long championed. But opponents worry that the plan, which would require congressional approval, would give too much power to the airline industry. “We live in a modern age yet our air traffic control system

is stuck, painfully, in the past,” Trump said, noting that the FAA had been working to upgrade the system for years. “But after billions and billions of tax dollars spent and the many years of delays, we’re still stuck with an ancient, broken, antiquated, horrible system that doesn’t work.” The former businessman’s

push to privatize the system comes as the airline industry and regulators have managed zero fatal crashes of a domestic airliner in the U.S. in eight years. The proposal would transfer without charge all the air traffic control assets — control towers, routing centers and several billion dollars in tracking systems — to a private, nonprofit corporation. Removing air traffic control operations from the FAA would allow it to focus solely on its role as a safety regulator, according to an administration blueprint of the plan. But winning congressional approval could be an uphill battle. Democrats have largely opposed the changes, warning that airline interests would dominate the proposed board, overseeing an estimated 300 air traffic facilities and around 30,000 employees. Trump’s latest tweets could hurt travel ban NATIONAL SECURITY President Trump on Monday derided the revised travel ban as a “watered down” version of the first and criticized his own Justice Department’s handling of the case — potentially hurting the administration’s defense of the ban as the legal battle over it reaches a critical new stage. Trump in a tweet called the new ban “politically correct,” ignoring that he himself signed the executive order replacing the first ban with a revised version that targeted only six, rather than seven, Muslimmajority countries and blocked the issuance of new visas, rather than revoking current ones. Trump said the Justice Department should seek a “much tougher version” and made clear — despite his own press secretary’s past remarks to the contrary — that the executive order is a “BAN!” and not a pause on some sources of immigration. Federal judges across the country have focused acutely on Trump’s own past comments in ordering that the ban be frozen, determining that the president’s words expose it as a tool for discrimination disguised as a national security directive. The White House appealed to the Supreme Court after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit upheld the freeze on the ban last month. Next week, those suing are expected to file arguments. Trump’s latest remarks will surely be a part of their briefs. MATT ZAPOTOSKY (TWP)

NORRISTOWN, PA. Bill Cosby went on trial Monday on charges he drugged and sexually assaulted a woman more than a decade ago, with a prosecutor warning the jury not to fall into the trap of confusing the 79-yearold comedian with the beloved family man he played on TV. Cosby used his power and fame to violate an employee of Temple University’s basketball program, Assistant District Attorney Kristen Feden said in her opening statement. Cosby previously admitted under oath that he gave Andrea Constand pills and touched her genitals as she lay on his couch at his suburban Philadelphia mansion, the prosecutor said. Defense lawyer Brian McMonagle immediately attacked what he said were inconsistencies in Constand’s story, disputed that Constand was incapacitated, and made the case that she and Cosby, who was married, had a romantic relationship. Cosby is charged with three counts of aggravated indecent assault. He could get 10 years in prison if convicted. Cosby’s wife, Camille, was absent as the TV star, carrying a wooden cane, walked past dozens of cameras into the courthouse. But actress Keshia Knight Pulliam, who played his daughter Rudy on the top-rated “Cosby Show,” was at his side as he went into the building. MARYCLAIRE DALE (AP)

COACHING VACANCY

Matta agrees to step down at Ohio State

Thrillogy? Hardly. NBA FINALS There is a sign posted on the wall inside the Warriors’ locker room, high above Kevin Durant’s corner stall. It keeps with the tradition of cheesy team slogans. “Must be just about us,” it says. After the Warriors’ 132-113 demolition of the Cavaliers in Game 2 on Sunday, the message has taken on new meaning, and not in a promising way for the NBA. The league waited for this matchup, betting that an epic finals would be worth the cost of a noncompetitive playoffs. Instead, the final series is in danger of becoming a competitive dud. This series was supposed to be ultimate theater, a historic clash, The Thrillogy. It is instead only about the Warriors. LeBron James remains the best player in the world, despite the argument Durant is currently submitting. It would be a mistake to dismiss Cleveland. It would be equally foolish not to recognize the strong chance that for the remainder of the finals, and

perhaps beyond, Golden State’s only competition will be history. The Warriors’ pursuit of a 16-0 playoff record will be a dramatic storyline regardless. But the games themselves may dissuade viewership. In Game 2, Draymond Green fell into foul trouble, the Warriors committed 20 turnovers, James posted a triple-double and the Cavs still never came within 11 points in the fourth quarter. The Warriors led by 21 with 3 minutes, 47 seconds left, at which point Tyronn Lue emptied his bench. We waited two months to watch Dahntay Jones against Ian Clark? The Cavaliers won the title last year and rampaged through the East playoffs this spring, losing once in 13 games. The Warriors have turned them into the Washington Generals. Yes, the Cavaliers trailed 2-0 in last year’s finals, too. And they host the next two contests, starting with Game 3 on Wednesday.

The addition of Kevin Durant has helped the Warriors take a 2-0 lead on the Cavaliers.

The series-high number of points scored by Kevin Durant in this year’s NBA Finals. In two games, the small forward has scored six more points than Harrison Barnes — the player he replaced in Golden State’s lineup — did in all seven games of last year’s finals. (AP)

But last year they weren’t facing a team with Durant, or a healthy Stephen Curry, or a Green who hadn’t piled up so many flagrant fouls he stood on the verge of a

suspension. The Cavaliers haven’t seen a team like this, because nobody has. But do not tell the Warriors about the death of parity, not when the 2016 Larry O’Brien trophy resides in Cleveland. Golden State has insisted its focus won’t relent, and the Cavs have drawn on their experience from last year. When a reporter asked Kyrie Irving if the Warriors’ talent made it difficult to compete, he didn’t hesitate. “Hell, no,” he said. So far, the Warriors have made it look easy — too easy for the good of the NBA. A championship series should be about competition. After two games, this one has been about only Golden State.

Thad Matta, who led Ohio State to two Final Fours in 13 years, is out as Buckeyes basketball coach. Ohio State missed the last two NCAA Tournaments amid an exodus of players. Matta, 49, cited his health at a news conference Monday. For years, back problems sometimes prevented him from even taking off his shoes after a game. Matta said he and athletic director Gene Smith agreed he would leave despite the three years left on a contract extension he signed in 2012. Details of his compensation will be worked out. Smith said a national search for a replacement will begin immediately, and Matta will help the search. Ohio State was 17-15 this year, the worst season in Matta’s 17 years as head coach. (AP)

MLB One day several years ago, as Chase Headley was trying to establish himself as the Padres’ everyday third baseman, management passed around a sheet of paper full of facts and figures on how its spacious ballpark, Petco Park, played for hitters. Flyballs were mostly swallowed up in the vast expanses of outfield, while groundballs and line drives played better than in the average stadium. The conclusion was clear to Headley: Padres hitters should keep the ball out of the air. A few thousand big league at-bats later, Headley, now 33 and starting for the Yankees, chuckles at how antiquated that sounds — as the gospel of flyballs and high launch angles spreads across the game — and can’t help but kick himself for not resisting the Padres’ efforts to turn him into a groundball machine. “I look back, and I’m like, ‘What was I thinking?’ ” he said. “I’ve had to try to get it back the other way now.” Since the Padres’ hit-it-low memo, there has been a shift in philosophy so dramatic it can safely be called a revolution. More hitters, armed with more extensive data than ever before, are concluding that not only are flyballs, on average, better than grounders, but that the latter are to be avoided at all costs. “If you see me hit a groundball, even if it’s a hit, I can tell you: It was an accident,” said Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson, the 2015 AL MVP. The introduction in 2015 of Statcast — MLB’s camerabased analytics system that measures player movements and ball flights in intricate detail — has confirmed and accelerated the flyball trend in baseball, by

Rise of sophisticated data launches a launch-angle revolution for hitters aiming high

Daniel Murphy’s average launch angle rose from 11.1 degrees in 2015 to 16.6 degrees in 2016. As a result, his batting average rose from .281 in 2015 to .347 in 2016. He also hit 11 more home runs than he did in 2015.

introducing “launch angle,” a measurement of a ball’s vertical trajectory, into the mainstream. While a launch angle of zero is essentially a line drive at the pitcher’s knees, a negative figure is a grounder and 90 degrees is a pop straight above home plate. Analysts have been able to pinpoint the range of 25-35 degrees as the “sweet spot” for home runs when paired with an exit velocity — a measure of the speed of the ball off the bat — of 95 mph or greater. The exit velocity is crucial: At lower velocities, flyballs are simply outs. Three seasons of data show the players are catching on. In 2015 the average launch angle in MLB was 10.5 degrees, but in 2016 the average rose to 11.5, an increase of about 10 percent. Through May 21 this year, the league average was up to 12.8 degrees, another increase of almost 12 percent. Eight of the 10 playoff teams in 2016 ranked in the top half of the majors in flyball percentage. It’s not as if anybody has suddenly cracked a secret code about the optimum swing plane.

Flyballs 25

Ground balls

What is launch angle? Batters are increasingly trying to hit the ball at a higher angle, causing more flyballs and fewer grounders. Balls hit high enough are likely to either result in “bloops” over the infielders or, if hit hard enough, in home runs. The sweet spot hitters aim for is a launch angle of 25 to 35 degrees. (TWP)

The proportion of all major league hits this season that were home runs entering Monday’s games. That is the highest rate in baseball history. By comparison, 11.8 % of hits were homers during the longball era (1994-2005) defined by steroid use. (TWP/EXPRESS)

Hall of Famer Ted Williams — in his book, “The Science of Hitting,” published in 1971 when he was managing the Washington Senators — advocated swinging with a slight uppercut, which went against prevailing wisdom. “If you get the ball into the air with power,” Williams wrote, “you have the gift to produce the most important hit in baseball — the home run.” Look at players who make significant year-over-year leaps in performance, and there’s a good chance they’re hitting the ball with more frequency and authority. One of the best examples is in Washington. In 2015, Daniel Murphy, in his final season with the Mets, had a groundball rate of 42.8 percent (of balls in play) and a flyball rate of 36.0 percent, and he batted .281 with 14 homers and 56 RBIs. The next year, his first with the Nationals, he flipped his groundball/flyball ratio — to 36.3 and 41.9, respectively — and batted .347 with 25 homers and 104 RBIs. His average launch angle went from 11.1 degrees in 2015 to 16.6 degrees in 2016, when he finished second in MVP voting. If Ted Williams was the oracle for older generations of hitters, perhaps Donaldson, the Toronto slugger, will be the same for this and future ones. During a segment on MLB Network last year, Donaldson looked straight into the camera to address any kids who might have been watching. “If you’re 10 years old and your coach says to get on top of the ball,” Donaldson said, “tell them no. Because in the big leagues these things that they call groundballs are outs. They don’t pay you for groundballs. They pay you for doubles. They pay you for homers.” DAVE SHEININ (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Power era won’t diminish Pujols ANALYSIS We live in an era of home run fatigue. Fifty homers in a season, or 500 in a career, used to mean more. Fly balls are leaving ballparks at an unprecedented rate this year, 1.23 per team per game entering Monday. It would be easy, in this atmosphere, to dismiss Albert Pujols’ 600th career homer, struck Saturday night in Anaheim, Calif., as cheap. He was the sixth player

in 15 years to hit 600 home runs. Babe Ruth was alone in that room for 38 years, then Ruth, Hank Aaron and Willie Mays had it to themselves for another 31. But there is nothing cheap about Pujols’ ascent. Among those with 600 homers, only Ruth has a higher career batting average than Pujols, .342 to .308. Only Ruth has more World Series rings, seven to two. Only Aaron struck out at a lower rate than Pujols, 9.9 percent to 10.1. If anything, Pujols, 37, has been underappreciated, both because of a homer-happy era and the fact that the Angels have

In-room exercising Hotels are putting an emphasis on fitness — right where you sleep

TRENDS A growing number of hotels are making exercising on the road more accessible by bringing equipment into guest rooms. At the end of May, the Hilton in McLean, Va., became one of two Hiltons with Five Feet to Fitness rooms, which have 11 pieces of workout equipment and accessories. They include an indoor Wattbike bicycle and a Gym Rax, a training station that lets users tackle body-weight moves with TRX straps. The main attraction is the fitness kiosk, a touch-screen display that offers more than 200 videos, including tutorials on all the equipment, cycling, high-intensity interval training and yoga classes. Customer feedback drove Hilton to build these rooms, which cost $45 to $90 more per night than standard rooms. About 10

percent to 15 percent of guests use the fitness center, and a quarter expressed interest in an in-room option for convenience, says Ryan Crabbe, senior director of global wellness at Hilton. The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown reopened its spa and fitness center in April after a $1.5 million renovation that included the addition of 13 “spa-level” rooms. Costing $65 to $100 more per night, they include a wellness ball, yoga mat, aromatherapy, white-noise machine and the extra space for a workout. Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, which has 12 Washingtonarea locations, offers Gaiam yoga mats in every room and ondemand TV programming that guides guests through yoga or Pilates sessions. Not all three-month relationships are created equal: Were you just going on occasional dates, or were you “official” in some form? Either way, it sounds like you’ve attempted to end things already, so the only remaining piece is the final notification that you are not going to respond to his texts anymore. You need to be clear and firm. How about: “I feel like

I haven’t been as clear as I should have been, and that’s not fair to you. I need to tell you that although I’ve enjoyed our time together, I’m not in a place for a relationship right now. It’s best if I have a clean break for now, so please don’t be hurt if I can’t text you anymore. I wish you all my best.” When you go silent after something like that, it’s not ghosting.

in our townhouse community have all kinds of people coming and going late at night. They’re nice enough during the day, but I think they may be up to something shady. I don’t have anything to go on, and it’s not like I can just say, “Hey, are you up to something shady?” It unnerves me, though, since we are in such close proximity. UNHAPPY NEIGHBOR There exist certain objective, neighborly standards about noise after dark — and your community might even have regulations about them. Unless they had a specific OK from you about their behavior (where they would have had to throw your curiosity a bone about what’s going on), then they can’t assume that it’s peachy for them to be doing what they’re doing. Bottom line: You’re unnerved. So focus on the tangibles, not the potential shadiness (noise is noise, innocent or not). “Hey, I notice you have a lot of activity late at night. It’s fine if we’re still up, but other times I wonder if we could plan for it so we’re not caught off guard and disrupted.” Be open, friendly and respectful, and see where things go from there. entertainment There’s an international flair to the Australian’s comedy-news show TELEVISION Jim Jefferies has been racking up stamps on his passport. To film segments for his new weekly Comedy Central series, which debuts tonight at 10:30 p.m., the Australian comic’s itinerary has included the Netherlands, Slovenia, the Great Barrier Reef and China. “We can get hung up on America, how health care’s coming or

Comey being fired or people not liking the president,” he says. “Everywhere’s f---ed. Everywhere’s got its foibles.” For instance, he visited superliberal Holland — to check out its annual Christmas tradition of wearing blackface. These field pieces will be one component of “The Jim Jefferies Show,” which adds to the growing television landscape of news-driven comedy shows. Jefferies hopes to bring a bit more of an international perspective — as well as his signature caustic style. The show’s first block tackles

more time-sensitive newsy nuggets, but the last block — “a fluff piece,” he calls it — gives Jefferies a little more time to present the kind of shocking joke premises that punctuate his stand-up act. (If you don’t know Jefferies from his short-lived scripted FX series “Legit,” maybe you know him from his viral 2015 gun control routine.) There will also be some guest interviews. Jefferies prefers joking about social issues, “which are always sort of there no matter what politician’s in place,” and says he isn’t out to be known as the

Hart breathes life into his new book In a charming memoir, the comic gets candid about his rise to fame BOOK REVIEW Kevin Hart’s rags-to-riches life story, told candidly in his new autobiography, “I Can’t Make This Up: Life Lessons,” out today, makes a convincing case for simple values more connected to his roots in north Philadelphia than his success in Hollywood. He gives full credit to persistence, humanity and a conscience — mixed with a generally likable demeanor — as the cornerstones of his success. Hart devotes personal chapters to his childhood and gives thorough introductions to all of his family members and friends. It’s clear memories from his youth were impactful, as he can recount those stories — maybe too many? — down to the last detail and put them into the context of those aforementioned life lessons. Not that Hart has always practiced what he’s preaching. The moments when he lied to his mom about reading the Bible, crashed his then-girlfriend’s car and allowed anger to bubble up to the point where police had to break up domestic disputes serve as a reminder about the man he

never wants to be again. Hart has risen above his past offenses and become one of the world’s highest-paid comedians. And he did it by showing the vulnerability that comes from his own story. “My humor was in my uniqueness, my personality — not the way I saw life, but the way I did life. That was the payoff; that’s where I struck gold,” he writes. Hart carries the fact-isfunnier-tha n-fiction style throughout this book, although here, the poignant moments outweigh the humorous ones. A VIRAL CRAIGSLIST AD, posted in Spokane, Wash., seeking a “Generic

Father Figure for Backyard BBQ” on June 17, a day before Father’s Day. A group of college-age men in Spokane called “The Boys” put out the ad for a “Barbecue Dad,” because, “while most of us know how to operate a grill, none of us are prepared to fulfill the role of ‘BBQ Dad.’ “ They asked that anyone interested be able to refer to all attendees as “Chief,” “Sport” or “Champ,” and indicated that preference would be given to men named Bill, Randy or Dave.

“Imagine posting a Facebook status about your darling Harvardbound son, only to later have to retract it because they made a racist meme.” @SHENDRICKSLAMAR, on the news

that the acceptances of at least 10 incoming Harvard freshmen were revoked after it was discovered that they were sharing obscene memes in a private Facebook group chat. The memes allegedly had imagery that was racist, and mocked sexual assault and the Holocaust.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You may have a hard time holding it together when the knocks come one right after another. A friend can give you the boost you need. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You are usually aware of new developments before others, but today you may suffer from an uncharacteristic blindness. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’re looking for just the right person to help you with a project that is proving to be more difficult than expected. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You cannot simply let time slip by without taking advantage of the opportunity to do something good for yourself before the chance is gone.

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Someone

is getting closer than expected, and you may feel more emotional discomfort than usual as a result.

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’ll grow concerned about a loved one who is slipping further and further from a place of security and confidence. Act now. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You are eager to see things return to normal in the wake of an event that had you and others running for cover.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) There is a difference between being confident and being boastful. This will become clear to you as you face a certain rival.

TODAY: We should have partial sunshine into the afternoon, but with a cold pool of air aloft, showers may pop up in the afternoon. Highs range from 75 to 80. We’ll have a slight chance of scattered showers through the evening, but most areas should stay dry. Lows are within a few degrees of 60.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You may have to sacrifice one thing in order to have something else. Such a compromise will allow you to move forward. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You’ll learn an important lesson even after charging forward without heeding the warnings of others.
