An Indiana company raised the ire of neighbors in the Buckeye State by marketing an unscented Ohio candle with the tagline, “Not much to see. Not much to do.” The candle is sold by Fort Wayne company Simple Nature. Cleveland.com reported Ohio tourism director Lydia Mihalik took umbrage at the description. Simple Nature owner Derek Miles Taylor acknowledged he might be projecting his “insecurities of being a Hoosier on Ohio.” (AP)

A huge blob that appeared on the National Weather Service’s radar wasn’t a rain cloud, but a massive swarm of ladybugs over Southern California. Meteorologist Joe Dandrea said the swarm appeared 80 miles wide Tuesday as it flew over San Diego. But Dandrea told the L.A. Times the ladybugs were actually spread throughout the sky, flying at 5,000 to 9,000 feet, with the most concentrated group about 10 miles wide. (AP)

Feels ‘like it was yesterday’

A tribute center in Bedford honors the Bedford Boys, the 20 men from a small Virginia town who were killed in battle on D-Day.

were “Bedford Boys.” Company A lost 103 men on D-Day, 19 of them from Bedford County, according to the officials

at the Memorial. Another Bedford man was killed in Company F. Western Union operator Elizabeth Teass was the first to see the

dreadful telegrams when they began to arrive from Roanoke on the teletype machine July 17, historian Alex Kershaw wrote in his book, “The Bedford Boys.” One came in, then another, and another. “I just sat and watched them and wondered how many more it was going to be,” she remembered. There were so many that she enlisted townspeople to help deliver them across the community. “It just doesn’t seem possible that it’s been 75 years,” said Lucille Boggess, 89, of Bedford, who lost two brothers that day. “You almost feel like it was yesterday.” This week, the town sat steeped in its history. In front of the old brick courthouse on Main Street, where the Bedford boys trained in the basement of the National Guard armory before going to war, a plaque salutes the town’s heroes from the Revolutionary War, and a tall obelisk honors its men who fought for the Confederacy. Nearby was a 1954 plaque honoring the men from D-Day. It is set into a large block of stone taken from near Omaha Beach, and was a gift from the people of France. MICHAEL E. Study could be 1st step to ease copter noise D.C.-area residents have long complained about the impact of helicopter noise on their neighborhoods, but data about the flights, flight paths and which neighborhoods are most affected has been hard to come by. That may now change. The Government Accountability Office, at the request of lawmakers from D.C., Maryland and Virginia, said it will study the issue starting this fall. The GAO did not say how long it would take to complete the study. Local representatives said they have been getting a growing number of complaints from residents about the noise and its impact on their lives. (TWP)

BEDFORD, VA. Hundreds of aged veterans, VIPs and townspeople gathered on a hilltop memorial in Bedford on Thursday to honor the 20 men from Bedford County who were killed on D-Day, and all those who fell with them 75 years ago on the beaches of Normandy. Vice President Pence delivered the keynote address at the National D-Day Memorial at the edge of town, which was decorated with red-white-and-blue bunting, the flags of the United States and France, and pictures, hung from streetlights, of Bedford’s lost sons. Pence praised the men of DDay for their “triumph over tyranny.” “Every soldier who stepped ashore was … a visitor to hell,” he said. The men from this small town and county in south central Virginia were at the American tip of the spear that was thrust at the Nazis that stormy morning: roughly 220 soldiers in Company A, 116th Regiment, of the Army’s 29th Division. About 35 of them

Tensions mount in Va. races POLITICS Just as Virginia’s 2017 elections warned that an anti-Trump blue wave was headed for the 2018 U.S. midterms, this year’s legislative elections could preview national trends in 2020. So far, ugly infighting seems to be the norm. Primary elections are days away and both Republicans and Democrats are fighting over party identity and value. An unusually high number of Democratic incumbents are being challenged by newcomers. On the GOP side, lingering resentment over last year’s vote to expand Medicaid is helping fuel divisive primary contests. All 140 legislative seats are up for grabs this year and Virginia is the only state whose legislature has a reasonable chance of flipping partisan control. Republicans currently have narrow majorities in both houses. Democrats hope to continue a three-year winning streak, powered by suburban voters fleeing the GOP. A new courtordered state House map may help, although the U.S. Supreme Court could overturn it. But the party lost a major

The Virginia Health Department on Thursday issued an advisory cautioning the public that they may have been exposed to a measles-infected child at Dulles International Airport on Sunday and in several other places in Northern Virginia a few days later. boosting spending on traffic improvements, and a solid record on gun control and raising the minimum wage. He said Taeb’s campaign wants radical change most voters oppose. On the GOP side, the state’s two most powerful Republicans — Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment and House Speaker Kirk Cox — are in an unusually divisive nomination contest for a safe Republican House seat. House incumbent Chris Peace, R-Hanover, is facing challenger Scott Wyatt, who claimed victory after a convention picked him this month to be the Republican nominee. Peace and others say the convention was rigged in Wyatt’s favor. Peace is claiming victory after winning a modified primary on June 1, which Wyatt said is illegitimate. Norment publicly rebuked Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Jack Wilson for siding with Peace. Cox, meanwhile, publicly came to Wilson’s defense. Wyatt said Peace’s support for Medicaid expansion shows he is out of touch with what Republicans want. Peace said his party’s scorched-earth tactics are why they haven’t been successful. “It doesn’t help grow the tent, and that’s how we win,” Peace said. ALAN SUDERMAN (AP)

Security doors delayed access to Va. gunman VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. Police responding to the mass shooting last Friday at a Virginia Beach municipal building were unable to confront the gunman at one point because they didn’t have key cards to open doors on the second floor. Over the radio, they talked of bringing in a sledgehammer or other means of breaking in. The killer was eventually gunned down. Whether the delay contributed to the toll of 12 victims dead and four wounded is unclear. But the episode illustrated how technology designed to protect people from workplace violence can hamper police and rescue workers. Police Chief James Cervera said the mayhem lasted nearly 36 minutes from the time the gunman started shooting until police took him down. Key cards have become a standard feature of building security. But in many workplaces, security experts say, police often lack quick access to cards or codes, which could cost them precious time in a mass shooting. Police in some cities have made arrangements to install lock boxes containing key cards or keys outside buildings. But Tom Manger, senior associate director of the Major Cities Chiefs Association, said “there’s not enough key cards and lock boxes in the world” to give emergency responders easy access to every building. “There’s no option that’s perfect.“ BEN FINLEY AND DENISE LAVOIE (AP)

Boats and booze: Water taxis ease shutdown’s stress

Dear

KERY MURAKAMI (EXPRESS)

JOIN TODAY, year-round screenings. Memberships as low as $25.

Like thousands of other commuters heading home Tuesday evening, Doug Belote was trying to unwind after work. Somewhere his usual Y11 bus from downtown D.C. to Old Town was crammed two deep in the aisles. But as the sun sent streaks on the water, Belote watched about 20 sailboats pass, their sails full of the calming cool breeze. “Much better traffic to watch,” said Belote, a senior vice president of marketing, as he headed on a water taxi toward Alexandria’s waterfront from The Wharf in D.C. As Metro’s summer-long shutdown of six rail stations ended its second full week, the 19,000 Yellow and Blue line commuters at the closed stations continued figuring out how to navigate their new reality. Somewhere, others were packed in Metro’s free shuttles, which are proving to

be transit’s equivalent of snail mail. But for the nearly 2,275 people who Alexandria’s transportation department said commuted on the Potomac Riverboat Company water taxi last week, the shutdown is very different — one with lingering views and beer. Potomac Riverboat said the number of trips since the shutdown has increased by 43% over the same period last year. Having learned quickly that the rear-facing bench at the back of the boat has the most sweeping view, Belote watched the Washington Monument shrink into a pin, and felt the office and its cares fade away. But he realizes his good fortune. He lives by the Alexandria waterfront, and so it was easy to do this. Sitting on the bench behind him, on the other hand, was Michael Reiter. He lives near the Franconia-Springfield station. During the shutdown, his commute has been taking

him an hour by either a Metro shuttle or the Virginia Railway Express. He was on the boat only because he went to a happy hour near The Wharf after work as a federal management consultant. He’d get off the boat that day, take a bus to the closed OldTown King Street, and then a Metro shuttle bus to FranconiaSpringfield. With the boat ride, it took a half hour longer than the shuttle or VRE. “It was a nice day and an enjoyable commute,” he said. “But not something I can do every day.” Nearby, Cannon Cook stared at his phone with a can of DC Brau that he’d bought from the deck-level concession stand at his side. Some on the boat had tried a Metro shuttle during the shutdown’s first week. Cook hadn’t even bothered. The water taxi only takes a little more than the 45 minutes, door to door, that it used to take him to get to his government contracting job near L’Enfant Plaza by train. Cook was asked why he was downstairs. The answer came without hesitation. “It’s where the beer is,” he said. Reach Kery Murakami at kery.murakami@washpost.com. Follow him @theDCrider.

India roasts in ‘horrid’ heat

Daily life is a struggle as temperatures top 120 degrees in places

26

Stressed? Your dog is probably feeling it too.

CHANNI ANAND (AP)

NEW DELHI When the temperature topped 120 degrees, residents of the northern Indian city of Churu stopped going outside — and authorities started hosing down the baking streets with water. Churu, home to more than 100,000 people, has been the hottest place in India in recent days, part of a summer heat wave suffocating most of the country as temperatures rise above normal even for this sweltering time of year. Five of the hottest 15 places on the planet were in India or neighboring Pakistan this week, according to weather website El Dorado on Wednesday. In Churu, the mercury hit 118 degrees Wednesday, down from 122 degrees Monday. That temperature is just shy of India’s all-time high recorded in 2016. The National Disaster Management Authority has offered tips: Cover your head, cross-ventilate your room and try sleeping under a slightly wet sheet. The heat wave is part of a trend of rising temperatures in India. Last year was the sixthwarmest since national recordkeeping began in 1901; 11 of the 15 warmest years on record have all occurred since 2004. The frequency of heat waves is also increasing, a government minister told India’s Parliament this year.

People fill containers with water this week from a mobile tanker in a poor area on the outskirts of Jammu, India.

That adds up to a huge policy challenge, noted Hem Dholakia, an environmental researcher, in a piece published last month. “Science as well as our subjective experiences has made it unequivocally clear that longer, hotter and deadlier summers are poised to become the norm due to climate change,” he wrote. Every Indian city needs a plan for combating extreme heat, he said. India’s National Disaster Management Authority has worked, with considerable success, to reduce the number of deaths due to heat waves in recent years. According to government figures, such fatalities have fallen from 700 in 2016 to 20 last year. Kuldeep Srivastava, head of the regional forecasting center

Beating the heat The Indian city of Ahmedabad has been a pioneer in responding to severe heat, having instituted a heat action plan in 2013. The city started an early warning system to inform the public about extreme temperatures, expanded access to drinking water, encouraged employers to change work schedules so people spent less time outdoors, and repainted roofs so they reflected rather than absorbed heat. One study suggested the measures have prevented more than 1,000 deaths each year. (TWP)

at the India Meteorological Department in New Delhi, said that the current heat wave would abate within a few days

as moisture-laden winds push into the most severely affected regions. But real relief will come only with the arrival of the monsoon season. Such rains are expected to begin any day now in Kerala, on India’s southwestern coast, but will take several more weeks to work their way north. Meanwhile, in Churu, normal life has stopped. Hanuman Verma, a local journalist, said that residents are hunkering down in their homes, avoiding work and refraining from shopping during the day. The roads are so hot they could burn bare feet, he said. “I have lived here all my life but have never felt his hot before,” said Verma, 65. “It is horrid.” JOANNA SLATER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The visit, estimated to have cost tens of thousands of dollars, was the longest stay listed in portions of the hotel’s “VIP Arrivals” list for last year that were reviewed by The Post. Kasnazan said he came to D.C. for medical treatment and denies his choice of hotel was part of a lobbying effort. HEALTH When dog owners go through a stressful period, they’re not alone in feeling the pressure — their dogs feel it too, a new study suggests. Dog owners experiencing long bouts of stress can transfer it to their dogs, according to a study published Thursday in Scientific Reports. Swedish researchers focused on 58 people who own border collies or Shetland sheepdogs. The researchers examined hair from the dog owners and their dogs, looking at the concentrations of a hormone called cortisol, a chemical released into the bloodstream and absorbed by hair follicles in response to stress. The researchers found that the patterns of cortisol levels in the hair of dog owners closely matched those found in their dogs in both winter and summer months, indicating their stress levels were in sync. The researchers don’t know what causes the synchronization in cortisol levels between humans and their pups. But a hint might lie in the fact that the link is stronger with competitive dogs than in pet pooches. The bond formed between owners and competitive dogs during training may increase the canines’ emotional reliance on their owners, said Lina Roth of Linkoping University in Sweden. That in turn could increase the degree of synchronization. JEREMY REHM (AP)

An age-based split on value of older workforce

President Trump aims to use tariffs to pressure Mexico into stemming the flow of Central American migrants.

Still no deal to avert U.S. tariffs on Mexico Lawmakers hopeful an immigration accord could satisfy Trump

IMMIGRATION U.S. and Mexican officials labored for a second day Thursday to avert import tariffs that President Trump is threatening to impose as he tries to strong-arm Mexico into stemming the flow of Central American migrants across the U.S.-Mexico border. Both sides claimed headway Wednesday, but Trump said a “lot of progress” must still be made to halt the 5% tax on all Mexican goods that he has threatened to impose Monday as part of an escalating tariff regime opposed by many in his own party. The frantic last-minute talks underscore Trump’s chaotic approach even when decisions have enormous economic consequences for the U.S. and its closest allies. Trump has embraced tariffs as a tool he can use as leverage against other countries, ignoring the potential harm to American consumers and manufacturers. Traveling in Europe, Trump told reporters that negotiators

had made “a lot of progress,” but continued to play coy. “We’ll see what happens,” Trump said. “But something pretty dramatic could happen. We’ve told Mexico the tariffs go on. And I mean it, too.” Many in Washington still expect the tariffs to go into effect barring a major new concession from Mexico, though lawmakers who have been in talks with both U.S. and Mexican officials said they were hopeful a deal could be reached to satisfy Trump, or at least delay the tariffs’ implementation. Trump officials have said Mexico can prevent the tariffs by securing its southern border

An economic hit Researchers at UBS calculate that a 25% tariff on all Chinese imports would shave a full percentage point from U.S. growth over the next year. The economy grew 2.9% in 2018 and will likely be weaker for 2019. Add a 25% tax on Mexican goods, they say, and the United States could tumble into recession for the first time since 2009. (AP)

with Guatemala, cracking down on criminal smuggling organizations and overhauling its asylum system. But the U.S. has not proposed concrete metrics to assess whether Mexico is complying, and it is unclear whether even those steps would satisfy Trump. Beyond Trump and several White House advisers, few in the administration believe imposing tariffs is a good idea, according to officials familiar with internal deliberations. Those people worry about the negative economic consequences for Americans and believe the tariffs — which would likely spark retaliatory taxes on U.S. exports — would also hurt the administration politically. Trump routinely mischaracterizes who pays for tariffs, wrongly insisting it is the countries he levies them on rather than U.S. importers and often American consumers who face higher prices when costs are passed along. Without a deal, the first tariffs — 5% taxes on imports from Mexico, eventually increasing to 25% — are to go into effect Monday. JILL COLVIN, MATTHEW LEE AND LUIS ALONSO LUGO (AP)

The African Union, meanwhile, suspended Sudan from all activities “with immediate effect” over the military crackdown on protesters that left 108 dead this week. It threatened “punitive sanctions” if the military does not quickly hand over power to civilians. (AP) OLDENBURG, GERMANY

Life sentence for nurse who killed 87 patients A court in Oldenburg on Thursday found 42-year-old nurse Niels Hoegel guilty of murdering 85 patients, aged 34 to 96, and sentenced him to life in prison. He had earlier been convicted of two other killings. Hoegel worked at a hospital in Oldenburg from 1999 to 2002 and another hospital in nearby Delmenhorst from 2003 to 2005. The killings took place between 2000 and 2005, the dpa news agency reported. (AP) HONG KONG

Court: Same-sex couples are entitled to benefits Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal said Thursday the government cannot deny spousal employment benefits to same-sex couples, in a ruling hailed as a major step forward for same-sex equality in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory. The court overturned an earlier judgment, saying unanimously that denying same-sex couples access to spousal benefits is unlawful. Although same-sex marriage is not recognized in Hong Kong, the judgment appears to move the territory further in that direction. (AP)

POLITICS House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told several highranking colleagues Tuesday night that she wants to see President Trump “in prison” but does not want to impeach him, according to two officials familiar with the conversation. She was meeting privately with five chairmen of committees with investigative powers as part of a weekly check-in on probes of Trump when she came under some pressure to allow the launch of an impeachment inquiry. House Judiciary Committee Chair Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., has been asking Pelosi to OK the launch of an impeachment inquiry. But Pelosi suggested she wanted Trump to face charges after leaving office rather than be impeached by the House when the Republicancontrolled Senate would likely acquit him. “I don’t want to see him impeached. I want to see him in prison,” Pelosi said, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The officials said the meeting wasn’t particularly contentious and characterized Pelosi’s comment as offhand. The exchange was first reported by Politico. In a TV interview Thursday, White House spokeswoman Mercedes Schlapp said Pelosi’s comments about wanting to see Trump in prison were reflective of a Democratic Party “obsessed with investigations.” RACHAEL

FRANCE President Trump paid tribute Thursday to old men who were once the young Americans who stormed an occupied and fortified shore 75 years ago, and he called the storied D-Day invasion “an epic battle and the ferocious eternal struggle between good and evil.” Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron and other leaders of the nations that defeated Nazi Germany joined the thinning ranks of veterans of the D-Day invasion of June 6, 1944. The leaders gathered at the cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer where nearly 10,000 American war dead are buried. Trump honored the sacrifice and patriotism of veterans in their 90s, dozens of whom sat hunched behind him in a chilly wind. The president celebrated American bravery and the unity of fighting forces that landed at Normandy and pushed on into Europe, helping to turn the tide of World War II. “They came from the farms of a vast heartland, the streets of glowing cities and the forges of mighty industrial towns,” Trump said of the teenagers and young men who participated in the invasion. “Before the war, many had never ventured beyond their own community. Now, they had come to offer their lives halfway across the world.” American veterans of D-Day were among other veterans and their families on a stage erected at the Normandy American Cemetery. Trump recognized several by name, including Ray Lambert of West End, N.C., who was a medic in the 16th Infantry Regiment of the Army’s 1st Division, known as “The Big Red One.” Lambert, 98, has said this is probably his

Turns out cats aren’t totally lazy What does a cat do when nobody’s looking? A behavioral ecologist at the University of Derby in the U.K. recruited 16 cats to wear small cameras to find out. While outdoors, Maren Huck said, the cats’ top activity was “resting” — not sleeping, as many cat owners might suspect, but not exactly up and at ‘em either. Although “cats are famous for being lazy,” Huck said, even their alfresco resting was active — if subtly so. (TWP)

It began, as it so often does, with a glimpse. Something tall and hairy. Something that left footprints too big to be human. Whatever it was, the spotting was more than enough to get Peter Byrne on the scene. It was the mid-1970s and Byrne had already made a name for himself as one of the world’s most prominent researchers of Bigfoot. This was “a credible sighting,” reported by two U.S. Forest Service employees in the Pacific Northwest, Byrne said in an interview with The Post. At the scene, Byrne spotted a tuft of hair and piece of skin, shown above, that he hoped would bring him one step closer to his idée fixe: the sasquatch itself, a towering hominid of North American lore. Byrne bagged the sample and had it delivered to the FBI. He never heard back. Until Wednesday, when the bureau released its four-decade-old Bigfoot files. Byrne didn’t know it then, but the FBI took his request seriously and, in 1977, examined the samples by various means. And, after all that: “It was concluded as a result of these examinations that the hairs are of deer family origin,” the file says. Deer family origin. Those three words, delivered 40 years late, ended any lingering hopes. “We’re just finding this out,” Byrne, who is now 93, said. “It’s disappointing.” REIS THEBAULT

A vehicle loaded with West Point cadets on summer training overturned in rough, wooded terrain Thursday, killing one cadet and injuring several others, according to the U.S. Military Academy. The tactical vehicle operated by two soldiers overturned around 6:45 a.m. as it was headed to a land navigation site as part of standard summer cadet training, said West Point’s superintendent, Lt. world cup 2019

Pugh set for biggest stage

Mallory Pugh, 21, likely will serve primarily as a spark off the bench for the U.S. in France.

SOCCER Mallory Pugh remains sheepish around attention. Spending the past three years carrying the mantle as American soccer’s “next big thing” hasn’t done much to build up her ego. Asked about handling that burden, she can only laugh. “I don’t know,” Pugh said, adding, “You’re going to hear me say that a lot.” Pugh was 17 when she made her national team debut in January 2016, six months after the U.S. lifted the World Cup trophy in Vancouver. By the time the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro rolled around that August, the Colorado-born winger had established herself as a regular for the world’s top-ranked team. Although the U.S. crashed out in the quarterfinals, Pugh lived up to her rising star billing, scoring in a draw with Colombia to become the youngest U.S. player ever with a goal at the Olympics. After that meteoric rise, Pugh fell into a waiting game before

her next shot on the global stage. That’s the cyclical nature of women’s soccer — the World Cup and Olympics come in quick succession, followed by three years of exhibitions and low-stakes tournaments. At long last, Pugh is set to make her World Cup debut when the U.S. opens its title defense against Thailand on Tuesday in Reims, France. As a 21-year-old with 53 caps and 16 goals under her belt, she’s now a veteran of sorts, even if she’d quibble with that characterization. “Yeah, I’ve been on the team for a few years now, I have this many caps,” she said. “But I also feel like there’s so much more ahead.” Fleet-footed and brazen on the ball, Pugh swiftly earned a reputation with the U.S. for her ability to run at defenders, create scoring opportunities and bury chances of her own. Since leaving UCLA in 2017 to turn pro before playing a single NCAA game, the 5-foot-4 attacker has further

developed her physicality and soccer IQ with regular minutes for the Washington Spirit. “Tactically, I have a better soccer brain,” Pugh said. “I can read the game better, but I think the part I don’t want to lose, that I want to keep evolving, is just going out and playing and not thinking too much. I know when I’m doing that, that’s when I’m going to be at my best.”

“Everyone sees that she’s graceful, but I don’t think that people see her toughness.” SPIRIT MIDFIELDER ANDI SULLIVAN,

talking about teammate Mallory Pugh. Pugh says playing for the Spirit has improved her soccer IQ.

Washington midfielder Andi Sullivan, who also has played with Pugh on the U.S. team, added: “Everyone sees that she’s graceful, but I don’t think that people see her toughness. That’s not something she gets admired for, because she is scoring or sending in great crosses and having these cheeky touches. But she is pretty durable and strong and can hold off people really well.” Although Pugh is widely acknowledged as one of the sport’s top young talents, she is poised to primarily serve as a spark off the bench in France. Such is life on a loaded U.S. squad, with worldclass playmakers Tobin Heath and Megan Rapinoe entrenched as the starters out wide. Pugh has embraced that responsibility, recording three goals and an assist over five appearances as a substitute for the U.S. this year. “That, right now, is her role — to come in and be a differencemaker,” U.S. coach Jill Ellis said. “We’ve got a lot of strengths in our attacking group, but Mal is a really special player.” For a person who worries about saying “I don’t know” too much, Pugh is plenty decisive about the significance of stepping on the World Cup field in any role. “You wanted that as a little girl growing up,” Pugh said. “To have that happen would be like, ‘Wow, you actually did it’ — but also a sense of, ‘All right, let’s go.’ ” THOMAS FLOYD (EXPRESS)

Challengers wait to dethrone U.S.

The premier women’s soccer powerhouse to have not yet won a World Cup, Les Bleus know they won’t get a better chance than this summer on home turf. Can France become the first nation to simultaneously hold the women’s and men’s World Cups? Amandine Henry and Eugenie Le Sommer and Co. could make it happen.

The Matildas have held their own against elite competition each of the past two summers, winning the 2017 Tournament of Nations and finishing second in that competition in 2018, only losing to the U.S. on a tiebreaker. With Sam Kerr, the leading scorer each of the past two NWSL seasons, Australia is always a threat.

The 2015 World Cup semifinalists and 2016 Olympic gold medalists will match the U.S. with three World Cup titles if they win it all in France. Alexandra Popp and Dzsenifer Marozsán bring plenty of punch to the German attack, and Almuth Schult is one of the world’s top goalkeepers.

KEY STORYLINES

Looming questions for U.S.

The U.S. national team has long dominated women’s soccer, claiming three of seven World Cup titles — including the 2015 edition — since the tournament began in 1991. But none of those championships came back-to-back, as the Americans fell short in the semifinals during both of their previous title defenses. As the 2019 World Cup in France begins Friday, with the U.S. kicking off Tuesday against Thailand, here are five storylines to watch as coach Jill Ellis’ team tries to make American soccer history. THOMAS FLOYD (EXPRESS)

Is the next U.S. generation ready?

What role will Carli Lloyd play?

How will the U.S. defense hold up?

Is Jill Ellis up to the challenge as coach?

Can the U.S. finally go back-to-back?

Relying too much on proven but past-their-prime players has been the folly of many a defending champ, in both women’s and men’s World Cups. To Ellis’ credit, she has balanced her roster, bringing 12 World Cup veterans and 11 newcomers to France. Of those debutantes, cheeky playmaker Rose Lavelle, do-everything midfielder Lindsey Horan and steady center back Abby Dahlkemper figure to be particularly influential. Also look out for winger Mallory Pugh, 21, who presents a change of pace up front, and utility player Crystal Dunn, who has something to prove after being the last cut from the 2015 squad.

The two-time FIFA world player of the year — who you may recall notching a hat trick in the first 16 minutes of the 2015 World Cup final — is still in the mix at age 36. Although Lloyd has lost a step, the longtime midfielder has reinvented herself as a reserve striker. Always a player who thrives on the biggest stages — she scored game-winners in two Olympic gold medal matches — Lloyd is rounding into form right on cue, with five goals over the Americans’ final four tune-up matches. With Lloyd, Pugh and Christen Press, the U.S. has no shortage of lethal options off the bench.

Becky Sauerbrunn, regarded as perhaps the world’s finest defender, is still holding things down in the back. But the unit around her has been overhauled. Julie Ertz’s move from defense to midfield means Sauerbrunn has a new center back partner in Dahlkemper. The left back, Dunn, is versatile but more comfortable in the attack. Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher is facing her first real test, having long bided her time as Hope Solo’s backup. Even Kelley O’Hara, a proven veteran at right back, is something of a question mark after only recently returning from a lingering ankle injury.

Ellis pressed the right buttons in 2015, as lineup tweaks and a formation change led the U.S. to the title. But after the coach shepherded the worst U.S. finish in Olympic history — a quarterfinal exit in 2016 — she embarked on a slew of polarizing tactical experiments. Ellis now deploys a 4-3-3 formation, with two advanced midfielders and aggressive outside backs. It’s a look that offers plenty of firepower but also could prove defensively vulnerable. Her decisions to omit defender Casey Short and midfielder McCall Zerboni also could loom large if the U.S. needs to call upon its depth.

If the U.S. does repeat as champion, it’ll likely be thanks in no small part to its attacking trio: creative wingers Tobin Heath and Megan Rapinoe, plus ruthlessly efficient striker Alex Morgan (who has 101 goals in 163 international games). How the bracket comes together also will be key. The U.S. should have no problem getting out of a group with Thailand, Chile and Sweden. But considering that a first-place finish would put the U.S. on a quarterfinal collision course with host France, the Americans, strangely enough, could have an easier path if they advance as the group runner-up.

Eagles TE Zach Ertz headed to France after minicamp to cheer on wife Julie in the World Cup

WOMEN’S SOCCER The world’s best player won’t be at the World Cup but the world’s best team will be, with both sides taking a stand for equality. Ada Hegerberg, above, the first winner of the Ballon d’Or award for the world’s top female player, won’t be accompanying Norway’s national team. She stepped away in 2017 because of what she perceives as a general disregard for women’s soccer by the country’s federation. The crux of her frustration is the uneven pace of progress and strategy in the women’s game. Hegerberg, 23, is at the top of her game. She had a hat trick for Lyon in its 4-1 win over Barcelona in the recent Women’s Champions League final. In domestic games, she has 211 goals in 208 games. Meanwhile, the U.S. national team hopes to collectively be a difference-maker, too. While the Americans, ranked No. 1 globally, make their way around France to defend their World Cup title, back at home they’re all part of a lawsuit that accuses U.S. Soccer of gender discrimination. Twenty-eight members of the current player pool filed the lawsuit March 8 in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, alleging “institutionalized gender discrimination,” including inequitable compensation compared with players on the men’s national team, which failed to qualify for the last World Cup. Between this and “Game of Thrones,” poor Sophie Turner is popping up in a lot of underwhelming finales.

Going down in flames

The X-Men franchise turns to ash with the overly somber send-off ‘Dark Phoenix’ FILM REVIEW “Dark Phoenix” isn’t kidding about the “dark” part. The latest, and almost certainly final, chapter in the X-Men superhero saga is a somber, even funereal affair — not in a stylish, Christopher Nolan-esque way, or even a la “Logan.” Rather, if a movie can be said to suffer from lowgrade depression, this one certainly seems to be, shuffling in its socks and bathrobe through a not-quite-two-hour running time with an attitude that is closer to grudging obligation than enthusiastic commitment. The movie opens, with a literal bang, in a violent, 1975-set prologue that introduces us to the film’s protagonist Jean Grey, first seen as an 8-year-old girl (Summer Fontana) who is about to experience tragic loss, thanks to the unintended consequences of her telepathic and telekinetic abilities. Jumping ahead 17 years, we next meet Jean’s 25-year-old self (Sophie Turner), a woman now more confident in her paranormal gifts, having been raised in a school for mutant children run by Charles Xavier (James McAvoy). Jean is one of Charles’

X-Men, a band of superheroes with extraordinary physical and mental abilities — and a hotline to the president, from whom they receive their marching orders. One of those orders soon comes in. A spaceship full of astronauts has been damaged in Earth’s orbit. The X-Men, whose powers range from teleportation to controlling the weather, must save them. Their mission goes off with only one tiny hitch: While in space, Jean is irradiated with some kind of strange cosmic energy, rendering her even more powerful — and more of a loose cannon — than before. She comes

of low-energy mode, which is especially ironic, considering that it’s about a being who is touted as the most powerful entity on Earth. (This assessment comes from Jessica Chastain’s character, a mysteriously otherworldly figure who wants a taste of Jean’s mojo for herself.) Sure, there are some fights — most of them internecine. Alliances shift, old resentments are stirred, and Charles’ sometime nemesis Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender) comes out of semiretirement. Half the people in the movie want to kill Jean, and half of them want to save her from herself. But despite what sounds like all-out war, “Dark Phoenix” mostly plays like turgid psychodrama, with characters throwing around cheesy lines like “I thought I’d lost you.” By the time the X-Men finally get around to doing what they do best — levitating metal trains, shooting eyeball lasers, conjuring lightning and engaging in dueling mind-control — it all feels borderline tedious, like a game of superhuman rockpaper-scissors. There are plenty of great tunes in this documentary, which pays homage to the electric pop-music scene that emerged from the Laurel Canyon neighborhood of Los Angeles in the mid-1960s. But the problem lies in the “echo,” which refers to the younger musicians who gather for a tribute concert organized by the filmmakers, as the all-star lineup doesn’t make anything new out of these songs. FILM REVIEW All dogs are good dogs. Oh, sure, yours might poop in a shoe from time to time, or snatch a snack from the counter. But overall, the human race would be a lot better if we all strove — doggedly — to be a little more, er, doggish. “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” an animated film about canines (and other domesticated critters), doesn’t quite live up to the standard set by real-world pooches. Call it a pretty good dog. Picking up where the original 2016 film left off, this sequel centers on a terrier named Max (Patton Oswalt, doing replacement voice duty after Louis C.K. was dropped from the franchise in the wake of admitted sexual misconduct). Max is still living happily in New York City with his owner, Katie (Ellie Kemper), and his lummox of a best friend Duke (Eric Stonestreet). But then suddenly, in a brief montage, we see everything change: Katie meets a guy, gets married and has a baby, none of which Max likes. Eventually the baby becomes a toddler, and he and the dogs begin to get along so well that Max feels he must protect the child from everything. The best way to do that is to not let him do anything. Meanwhile, in another apartment, Snowball the rabbit (Kevin Hart) has come to think of himself as a superhero, thanks to the

Snowball (Kevin Hart), left, has to summon his inner hero after Daisy (Tiffany Haddish) shows up to ask for his help on a dangerous mission.

‘The Secret Life of Pets 2’ (PG, 86 min.) DIRECTOR: Chris Renaud STARS: Patton Oswalt, Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, Harrison Ford IN A NUTSHELL: Terrier Max, bunny Snowball, Pomeranian Gidget and their animal pals must find the courage to face their biggest fears.

costume that his owner dresses him in. Gidget (Jenny Slate), a pampered puffball of a Pomeranian, still has a crush on Max. The main story, such as it is, kicks in when Max and his family take a trip to the country. That’s where Max meets Rooster (Harrison Ford), a cattle dog who actually works for a living and who

disdains Max — as much for his life of leisure as for his nervous nature. Additional storylines focus on a favorite toy of Max’s that goes missing and an attempt by Snowball and his new Shih Tzu pal, Daisy (Tiffany Haddish), to rescue an abused circus tiger from his evil owner (Nick Kroll). We know the circus owner is evil because he dresses in black and has a Russian accent. See the problem here? There are so many subplots, it’s like herding cats. Oswalt’s voice work is, as in “Ratatouille,” outstanding. Same with Slate and Haddish, whose characters are good enough to warrant a spinoff. Ford may not have quite their skill, but he conveys Rooster’s gruff irritation in a way that fits the character. Most of the movie’s jokes land solidly, which, ironically, only serves to highlight the other weaknesses of the film. “Pets 2” feels less like a compelling, fulllength feature than like three decent short films, each of which is only vaguely related to the other, and all of which exist merely to get from one joke to the next. Expecting us to wait around for another cats-are-jerks moment isn’t the best way to engage with an audience, no matter how valid that point may be. Despite some genuinely awwinspiring moments, “The Secret Life of Pets 2” is kind of forgettable. Rooster sums it up best with this no-nonsense assessment: “Some stuff happened. Now it’s over.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

If nothing else, ‘Pavarotti’ is a reason to reflect FILM REVIEW The best thing about Ron Howard’s polished new documentary, “Pavarotti,” is its compassion for the man. The film successfully challenges the caricature of the opera star that has lingered since his death in 2007 from pancreatic cancer, and in the process challenges opera lovers who abandoned him to reconsider the breach. Using unseen video clips made by Pavarotti’s second wife, Nicoletta, and interviews with his first wife and their adult daughters, Howard encourages viewers to give Pavarotti the benefit of the doubt when it comes to his love life. It was always messy, as his first wife knew, and yet she seems to have forgiven him. If she can, we can. But Howard is incapable of working outside the rigid cliche structure that governs Hollywood filmmaking, so his efforts to get at the “real” Pavarotti yield multiple Pavarottis, and the film is so slick you hardly notice. The movie also elides or ignores key questions about Pavarotti’s career — Howard doesn’t focus on how the tenor’s broader success as a crossover artist (who could fill stadiums with the Three Tenors concerts) changed the recording industry and classical music. Still, “Pavarotti” is an occasion for reflection, and the picture it presents of the tenor is sufficiently rounded that those new to his artistry will likely be beguiled. PHILIP KENNICOTT (TWP)

“Finding out he lost in the Finals to a guy who pooped his pants on the floor is the biggest hit to Kobe’s legacy.” @KYLENEUBECK, responding to former Celtics star Paul Pierce saying Wednesday on live TV that he left Game 1 of the 2008 NBA Finals in a wheelchair because he “had to go to a bathroom.” Pierce later recanted, tweeting that the only pooping “I did … was on the Lakers.” Boston defeated Kobe Bryant and L.A. in Game 1 and the series.

Documents obtained by Bloomberg showed test flights took off from a Manhattan heliport near Wall Street and went to John F. Kennedy International Airport. Sudoku

DIFFICULT

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) A surprise may have you jumping the gun in some way today. You’ll have the chance to reset and do things at the right times. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’re eager to move forward in a more aggressive manner, but “faster” doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be more effective. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) An idea you’ve long embraced may not amount to much today when it’s put into action. You are sure to realize what mistakes you’ve made. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may be tempted to break with tradition and do something that no one expects, but that isn’t necessarily the way to win over your critics.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You may

have to get the consent of another before moving in a certain direction. Is this because danger is involved?

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Things may take longer to go through the system today than you had anticipated. Make productive use of any time spent waiting. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) It may be easier today than yesterday to follow the rules and do the things you are told to do. A new opportunity gets your attention. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You are concerned that things may not be progressing the way you had hoped. Today is a good day to perform an honest self-assessment.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

Comics POOCH CAFE | PAUL GILLIGAN

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may be able to control the actions of those within your inner circle, but what happens outside of it may be anyone’s guess at this time. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You are more emotional today than usual, but does it have to do with a recent loss — or a coming opportunity? It should be quite apparent.

DAILY CODE

OD

Today in History 1712: Pennsylvania’s colonial assembly votes to ban the further importation of slaves. 1769: Frontiersman Daniel Boone begins to explore present-day Kentucky.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’ll be remembered for your grace under fire. What happens today can serve as an example for many as the future beckons. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) The difference between “need” and “want” becomes clear once more. You are able to accomplish something that a rival has only dreamed about.

Need more Sudoku? Find another puzzle in the Comics section of The Post every Sunday and in the Style section Monday through Saturday.

1776: Richard Henry Lee of Virginia offers a resolution to the Continental Congress stating that “these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States.”

PEARLS BEFORE SWINE | STEPHAN PASTIS

1981: Israeli military planes destroy a nuclear power plant in Iraq, a facility the Israelis charged could have been used to make nuclear weapons. 2004: A steady, near-silent stream of people circle through the rotunda of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif., where the body of the nation’s 40th president lay in repose. The president’s body was transported to D.C. two days later for a state funeral.

DIFFICULT

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

FRIDAY: Noticeably drier air, and highs only in the upper 70s to low 80s are a treat. Partly cloudy with light breezes from the northeast. The evening should be delightful for outdoor activities with, again, light breezes and low humidity.

This double went above and beyond Sophie Turner revealed on Thursday’s episode of Australian podcast “Smallzy’s Surgery” that husband Joe Jonas almost kissed her “Game of Thrones” photo double. “On ‘Game of Thrones’ I had a photo double that people would do double takes at because she looked so much like me,” she recounted. “Even Joe went up to her at one point and tried to give her a kiss.” (EXPRESS)

Madonna criticized a New York Times article published Wednesday titled “Madonna at Sixty,” writing on Instagram that she felt “raped” by the story. The singer revealed several personal details about herself in the article, including how she felt discouraged from making music after her 2015 album, “Rebel Heart,” was leaked online and how she bemoans hearing her songs in public. “The journalist who wrote this article spent days and hours and months with me and was invited into a world which many people dont get to see, but chose to focus on trivial and superficial matters,” Madonna wrote Thursday. Tyler Perry took to Facebook on Wednesday to criticize actors who are buying billboard space to get his attention. “This is not the way to get my attention if you’re looking for a role in one of my shows,” the screenwriter wrote, alongside a picture of a billboard featuring an actress that read, “ATTENTION MR. PERRY Racquel Bailey Is Your Next Leading Lady.” (EXPRESS)
