Concern Elevates Over Economy With his poll favor waning, Obama says U.S. shouldn’t panic

FWmb[djoÊi FbWd

MWi^_d]jed With few options at hand and his poll numbers sagging, President Obama expressed concern Tuesday about the sudden slowdown in the economy but said he is not worried about a second recession and the nation should “not panic.” The president spoke about the new economic trouble in detail for the first time since a report late last week showed job growth had slowed sharply in May. He tried to reassure Americans worried about high unemployment and expensive gas that the nation is on a slow, if not steady, path to recovery. “I am concerned about the fact that the recovery that we’re on is not producing jobs as quickly as I want it to happen,” Obama said at an appearance with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel. “We don’t yet know whether this is a one-month episode or a longer trend.”

President Obama tries to ease worry over the economy Tuesday at the White House.

Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke, speaking in Atlanta on Tuesday, acknowledged the economy has lost momentum but said nothing to suggest the Fed was about to take any bold new action. And with lawmakers fighting over the nation’s budget deficit and long-term debt, there is no political appetite for a second major federal stimulus bill. At the same time, the president is confronted with a slate of figures

presenting challenges to both the economic recovery and his own reelection prospects. Just as the field of Republican challengers begins to take shape, a Washington PostABC News survey found that public disapproval of Obama’s handling of the economy has reached a record high, 59 percent. Seventeen months before the election, unemployment is 9.1 percent. When Obama took office, it was 7.8 percent. Most economists

Former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty, one of President Obama’s early Republican presidential challengers, accused Obama on Tuesday of being satisfied with a second-rate economy “produced by his third-rate policies.” Pawlenty proposed cutting taxes on business by more than half and simplifying the tax code to just three tiers, with a top marginal rate for individuals of 25 percent; it’s now 35 percent. (AP)

think the rate will be above 8 percent at election time next year. No president since World War II has been re-elected with unemployment higher than 7.2 percent. The day brought the latest in a stream of downbeat economic news: A government report said there were 4.6 unemployed people, on average, for each available job in April. In a healthy economy, the ratio is 2-to-1. CHRISTOPHER S. RUGABER AND MARTIN CRUTSINGER (AP)

:[bWo[Z H[WYj_ed0 The government’s threat to levy huge fines against airlines that hold passengers on the ground for hours has worked: Long tarmac delays are down dramatically since the rule went into effect a year ago. But delays haven’t disappeared. There have been 20 of three hours or more in the past year, yet no airlines have been fined, and analysts wonder whether the lack of enforcement will result in a return to long stays on the runway. Fire 2nd Largest in Ariz. History Ifh_d][hl_bb[" 7h_p$ Bulldozers scraped away brush and trees on Tuesday to create a barrier between two eastern Arizona mountain towns and a mammoth wildfire. Crews removed brush from around homes and firefighters were sent to protect other buildings from the flames. All the while, the 7,000 residents of Eagar and Springerville prepared to leave if the second-largest wildfire in state history edges closer. “If given the word, then I’m gonna go,” Eagar resident Gerald McCardle said. “We’re already packed. We packed last night, and we’re out of here.” Off icials say the blaze has already burned 486 square miles and is about 10 miles outside the towns. Winds have been driving the flames 5 to 8 miles a day since the fire began a week ago, possibly from an unattended campfire.

Accident Exposes Risks of ‘Bounce Houses’ Gusts send 3 large inflatable toys in the air in N.Y., hurting 13 EY[Wdi_Z[" D$O$ They look like harmless fun — fluffy, inflated castles, ships and slides filled with children jump-

ing around carelessly, their parents letting their guard down a bit during playtime. But an accident that sent three of the huge toys aloft on a breezy afternoon on New York’s Long Island, left a woman seriously injured and hurt 12 other people is drawing attention to the little-known hazards of the inflat-

able playthings sometimes called “bounce houses” and the inconsistent regulations covering them. At least 10 inflatables around the country have been toppled by winds or collapsed under too much weight in the past two months, injuring more than 40 people, according to RideAccidents.com, a website that tracks amusement

ride accidents. It’s not the toys themselves that are the problem, it’s the way they are set up and supervised, said Jim Barber, a spokesman for the National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials, based in Brandon, Fla. “I wish this was a rarity, but it’s not. It happens all the time.” (AP)

Smoke from a hammering of airstrikes billows on Tuesday in Tripoli, Libya, during the heaviest wave of coalition bombing runs yet since NATO took over the air campaign.

Jh_feb_" B_XoW Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi stood defiant Tuesday in the face of the heaviest and most punishing NATO airstrikes yet, at least 40 thunderous daylight attacks that sent plumes of smoke billowing above the dictator’s Tripoli compound. In the afternoon and as the strikes continued, Libyan state television broadcast an address from Gadhafi, who denounced NATO and the rebels. “We will not kneel!” he shouted,

vowing never to surrender. It couldn’t be confirmed whether the some 10-minute speech was a live phone call or an audio recording. Alliance officials have warned for days they were increasing the scope and intensity of their air campaign to oust Gadhafi after his more-than 40 years in power.

NATO is backing the rebel insurgency, which has seized swaths of eastern Libya and pockets in the regime’s stronghold in the west since it began in February, inspired by uprisings elsewhere in the Arab world. Western reporters and a senior Libyan official said the pounding airstrikes Tuesday outstripped the

number of bombing runs on any day since NATO took over the air campaign from the U.S. Libyan government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim told reporters that he believed about 30 people were killed in 60 NATO strikes on Tripoli. Reporters, who face tight restrictions in the Libyan capital, saw only one dead man during a visit to Gadhafi’s Bab al-Aziziya compound and counted about 40 explosions. Previous government tolls have proved to be exaggerated. Meanwhile, Gadhafi’s inner circle continues to be shaken by defections. A Libyan rebel diplomat in Geneva said Tuesday that the labor minister, Al-Amin Manfour, has joined the rebels. (AP)

President Ali Abdullah Saleh was burned over 40 percent of his body and suffered bleeding in his brain from last weekend’s attack on his palace, U.S. officials said Tuesday, indicating his wounds were worse than initially reported. deepening power vacuum. Three U.S. officials said Saleh, who is being treated in Saudi Arabia, is also bleedSaleh ing in his skull. Those officials said U.S. officials think the injuries were caused by a bomb planted

inside his compound, not a rocket attack from outside the compound walls. That conflicts with initial reports of the attack, which killed 11 bodyguards and wounded more than 150 people, including five senior officials. MehbZ Reports: Rebellious Soldiers Led Attack in Syria 8[_hkj A deadly mutiny of Syrian soldiers and loss of control over the tense northern town of Jisr al-Shughour appeared to show extraordinary cracks in an autocratic regime that has long prided itself on its iron control. Details about the events in Jisr al-Shughour remained murky on Tuesday. The government said 120 forces were dead, without explaining the enormous loss of life. But reports Tuesday from residents and activists — and the television appearance of a soldier who says he switched sides — were the clearest sign yet that President

Bashar Assad’s grip is eroding. A resident said a number of soldiers defected, angered by the thuggish behavior of pro-govern-

ment gunmen known as “Shabiha,” a fearsome name that some believe has roots in the Arabic word for “ghost.” In many ways, Syrians say, the Shabiha are more terrifying than the army and security forces, whose tactics include firing on protesters. A Jisr al-Shughour resident said people were fleeing for the Turkish border about 12 miles away, fearing retaliation from the regime, which vowed Monday to respond “decisively” to the violence there. The nationwide crackdown on the revolt against Assad has left more than 1,300 Syrians dead, activists say. (AP)

German officials are still looking for the cause of the outbreak that began May 2. So far, the super-toxic strain of E. coli has killed 24 people, infected more than 2,400 and left

German officials first accused Spanish cucumbers of being the culprit last week. On Sunday, they blamed German sprouts, only to backtrack a day later.

“If we don’t know the likely culprit in a week’s time, we may never know the cause,” Dr. Guenael Rodier, the director of communicable diseases at the World Health Organization, said Tuesday. Other experts were far more critical of the investigation. “If you gave us 200 cases and five days, we should be able to solve this outbreak,” said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota. On Tuesday, the EU health chief warned Germany against issuing any more premature — and inaccurate — conclusions about the source of contaminated food. (AP)

7jjWYa[Z ed 8ej^ I_Z[i Since Rep. Anthony Weiner revealed on Monday his risqué behavior online, Weiner has found himself under fire from both sides of the aisle. (AP)

Many Americans say racy interactions amount to infidelity 8[^Wl_eh

ANDREW BURTON/GETTY IMAGES

Jon Austin’s wife, Amy, had a blunt assessment for him as the Minneapolis couple watched Rep. Anthony Weiner’s stunning confessions on television this week. “You’d be dead,” she told him. Regardless of his career’s future, it’s Weiner’s predicament at home that seems to be launching countless discussions among couples like the Austins. And this time, it’s not a question of actual physical cheating — a la Eliot Spitzer and his prostitution scandal — but the murkier backdrop of Internet relationships: sexting, tweeting lewd photos, emailing. If it’s virtual, does it constitute infidelity? Many Americans seem to think it does. “Would you text it, post it, send it with your spouse looking over your shoulder?” asks Austin, 52, who takes no issue with his wife’s appraisal. “If yes, then it’s not infidelity. If no, you’re cheating.” In online postings and followup phone calls with The Associated Press, dozens of people echoed the same thought: Cheating need not be physical. A specialist in Internet addiction says that many people turn to online relationships to escape the pressures of their daily lives, reveling in the anonymity — particularly if, like a congressman, they are well known. But some, says K imberly Young, director of the Center for Internet Addiction Recovery, experience a more dangerous sense of detachment, somehow convincing themselves once the laptop is closed: “I didn’t really do that. That wasn’t me.” And they don’t see their actions as infidelity. “I’ve seen married people go to great lengths to cover things up,

Rep. Anthony Weiner, who is married, admitted Monday that he tweeted a lewd photograph amid other online relationships.

?d j^[ Ifejb_]^j The woman at the center of the Rep. Anthony Weiner scandal is a 21-year-old college student in Seattle. According to the New York Post and other news outlets, Gennette Cordova received a lewd picture from Weiner but never met him in person. She said she suspects the picture was not intended for her, but for someone else — rumors point to porn star Ginger Lee. In an odd coincidence, Cordova was voted in high school to be the student most likely to be involved in a tabloid scandal. (E XPRESS)

hiding phone bills and the like,” says Young, a practicing psychologist. “But they don’t think it’s cheating. They say, ‘I love my wife.’” There are few statistics on adults and online relationships, partly because most research has focused on teenagers. There are, though, recent numbers on the prevalence of sexting among adults. In a May 2010 survey from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, 15 percent of adults said they had received “a sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude photo or video” on their cell phone, and 6 percent said they had sent such a text. In the 18-to-29 demographic, the numbers rose to 31 percent and 13 percent. Is the Weiner scandal — in which the married congressman

confessed, after days of denying it, to tweeting a lewd crotch photo of himself to a woman in Seattle — a Mars versus Venus moment? Do men see it differently than women? Psychologist Gail Saltz thinks so. Of course, she notes, men are more forgiving when it comes to judging other men, but not so with their own partners. “A man would be extremely disturbed if his wife did any of this,” Saltz said, referring to the type of activity Weiner says he engaged in. Psychologist Elana Katz says there is a potentially positive note to all of this: If the online activity doesn’t go beyond the point of no return, a couple can learn from the ordeal, which in some cases is the first sign of trouble. “Relationships can and do recover from this behavior, and in some instances the discovery is the first opportunity to ask the hard questions waiting to be addressed,” says Katz. JOCELYN NOVECK (AP)

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other members of the Democratic leadership voiced their disappointment in Weiner and urged the House ethics committee to launch an investigation to determine whether the New York Democrat broke House rules. Their calls came shortly after the married Weiner’s public apology for “inappropriate” online exchanges with six women. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid delivered a rebuff to Weiner, a clear sign of the frustrations fellow Democrats have with a scandal they want to see over as soon as possible. “I know Congressman Weiner,” Reid told reporters. “I wish there was some way I could defend him, but I can’t.”

J>; H?=>J House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Reince Priebus, the Republican Party chairman, said Tuesday that Rep. Anthony Weiner should resign after admitting to sexually charged online relationships and lying about his misdeeds. The National Republican Congressional Committee also seized on the Weiner scandal as a 2012 campaign issue, calling on more than a dozen House Democrats to return campaign contributions from Weiner. One of them, Rep. Betty Sutton, D-Ohio, said she was donating a $1,000 campaign contribution from Weiner to a local charity.

D.C. Pols Back to the Bad Days? With 5 city council members under fire, old reputation returns MWi^_d]jed A fringe mayoral candidate tells a D.C. Council hearing that “the mayor is a crook.” The city’s attorney general accuses council member Harry Thomas Jr. of spending more than $300,000 of public money on a luxury vehicle and personal travel. The new council chairman, Kwame Brown, is embarrassed into giving up the fancy SUV that the city ordered. The new mayor, Vincent Gray,

gets rid of his chief of staff after reports that several children of top officials were given city jobs. What does it mean that at least five members of the council and the mayor himself are trying to fend off accusations of wrongdoing? Some say former mayor Adrian Fenty’s failed campaign slogan about Gray proposing to take the city back to its bad old days has been proved correct. But the acts that led to this year’s scandals took place before Gray came into office, leading other observers to suggest that the rash of scandals reflects instead a growing propensity among city politicians to live beyond their means in recent years.

Not since the 1980s has the District government offered its critics such a rich vein of material to support the notion that the city government is run by people with an ethical blind spot. Southwest: Growth to Help BWI B_dj^_Ykc" CZ$ International expansion by Southwest Airlines into the Caribbean, Central America and, later, European markets will likely be a boon for BWI, according to the discount carrier’s chief executive officer. Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport has struggled to attract and retain foreign flights, and such an expansion by Southwest could reshape the airport’s limited international presence. BWI has “been a candidate in our minds for as long as we’ve been thinking about expanding internationally,” said Gary Kelly, Southwest’s chairman, president and CEO. The recent controversy over dancing at the Jefferson Memorial has inspired a congresswoman: Eleanor Holmes Norton wants to turn booty shaking on the Mall into a national holiday. Norton plans to amend a Mall revitalization bill to declare July 30th National Dance Day on the Mall and around the country. She plans to get “So You Think You Can Dance” judge Nigel Lythgoe and others involved in the action, which will include a flash mob and troupes of local dancers. “When people go as far as Flash Mob dancing without a permit on the Mall, we should see such a response from the public as a wake-up call to make the Mall more with it,” Norton said. and homers. He attributed the turnaround to new contact lenses, saying he was “blind as a bat” until he got them on April 18. Nationals fans are, of course, paying attention. Some are clamoring for Harper’s promotion to the big club. If not now, then soon. Washington is in last place in the NL East and one of the worst-hitting teams in the majors, so why take the long, slow road with the kid? The answer, for those who see Harper every day, is easy. There are dozens of things — from obvious to subtle and tangible to intangible — that go into making a major league baseball player. Maturity. Baserunning. Learning to work the count. Dealing with the grind. Attitude. Harper has a head start on most of them, but he’s mastered maybe three. He has a major league arm in

said Doug Harris, the Nationals’ director of player development. “We want to make sure we’ve built a good foundation, not only on the field but in the clubhouse.” Harper validated Harris’ point last Thursday. While the headline will forever record that Harper hit his first walkoff homer with the Suns, the details reveal he was picked off in the first inning and then got caught in a rundown in the fifth trying to advance on a ball in the dirt. The miscues are part of a recurring theme — he’s been embarrassed more than once trying to snag an extra 90 feet this season. “He’s a very aggressive player, which is great,” said Hagerstown manager Brian Daubach. “We talk about the right situations to be aggressive, just really trying to think before the play happens.” (AP)

Criticism Fuels Freeman Former Hoyas guard trims down in hopes of getting drafted

NBC on Tuesday retained its hold on U.S. Olympic television rights Tuesday in a four-Olympics deal through 2020 worth about $4.4 billion, defeating rival bids from ESPN and Fox. ‘Dreamgirls’ Diary Jennifer Hudson’s memoir will focus on food, weight loss )+

Ra! Ra! Germany! Last night, the first lady surely looked radiant at the state dinner honoring German Chancellor Angela Merkel, above. Trying to guess who Michelle Obama would wear made me wonder: What if she chose a German designer? “Wait,” you say, “there are German designers?” Germany doesn’t have a couture heritage, yet big names hail from the nation. Karl Lagerfeld, the chief designer for Chanel, and Jil Sander, 8o AWj^[h_d[ founder of her name8eob[ sake house, were born in Germany during the Third Reich. Labels such as Etienne Aigner and Escada are based in Munich; for years, their products carried “Made in West Germany” on their labels. Since 2007, Berlin even has its own Fashion Week, just like London, Paris and Milan. By now, photos of Obama’s gown are out, and it’s likely she wore American. (This column went to print before the White House announced the designer.) But President Obama could have worn a piece by German-born American designer Robert Geller, who won the CFDA’s Swarovski Award for Menswear on Monday. It would have been a sweet nod to Deutschland and its fashionable (American) ties. Comments? Give Katherine your feedback: expressnightout.com/speaker

On YouTube, a black metal-loving vegan is putting a satanic spin on cooking shows Edb_d[

The Vegan Black Metal Chef is sacrificing something on his granite pentagram. It is a potato. The potato is chopped into ragged pieces with a horrible metal instrument of death, then boiled and then beaten with a large silver mace shaped like a human skull. Flecks of potato flesh spray onto the Vegan Black Metal Chef’s carefully applied makeup, which, like the Vegan Black Metal Chef, is also vegan. The cooking utensils on the counter — swords, daggers, blades of chaos — shudder menacingly with pulsing vibrations of the ominous background music, which, like the Vegan Black Metal Chef, is also black metal. Then the Vegan Black Metal Chef mixes the potatoes with a dollop of dairy-free buttery spread and a splash of almond milk and plates them attractively on a spiked metal tray with some vegetarian baked beans and a serving of corn. A few week s ago, a v ideo appeared online. It was called “Vegan Black Metal Chef Episode 1: Pad Thai.” It featured a man in chain mail, arm bracers and rubber shoulder armor whipping up a delightful noodle dish in his kitchen. “Cut the tofu in half, like so,” he instructed in guttural snarl. “You are missing one ingredient. That is, of course, the heat ... of ... SATAN.” It has more than a million views. It is your cooking future. “People have said, ‘You should

Extreme Eats On the Web show “Epic Meal Time,” a “Dude Where’s My Spatula?” take on cooking, host Harley Morenstein, above center, blends wisecracks with bacon. One dish, for example, is called the Cheesy Grilled Cheese Tower. “I like to say it’s a celebration-offood show,” he says. “Let’s do it how you really want it. Not how society pretends it wants to eat, but how that little fatty inside of you wants to eat.” M.H.

put this on the Food Network,’” says Brian Manowitz. (Vegan Black Metal Chefs are usually not born as such, and sometimes they are born as nice Jewish boys in Tampa, Fla., named Brian Manowitz.) “I don’t know if the Food Network would really be interested.” YouTube is. YouTube has become the repository for extreme cooking shows —

cook-or-die kinds of shows, which are equal parts pageantry and commentary on just what America is doing in its collective kitchen. Manowitz’s series could have just as easily been called “What do vegans eat, anyway?” This is the question that Manowitz set out trying to answer. It is the question that every vegan is forever getting from every omnivore who seems to believe there is a parallel dimension of secret vegan foods. But Manowitz, 30, who stopped eating meat in college at the suggestion of a girlfriend, never thought in terms of individual foods. He thought about full menus: red beans and rice. Whole-wheat pasta with vegetables. Stir-fries and curries of varying levels of heat. He is, lest his YouTube subscribers doubt his prowess, a really good cook. MONICA HESSE (THE WASHINGTON POST )

J^[ D[m MWo je FbWo Nintendo has introduced the world to the Wii’s touchy new big brother: the Wii U. The Japanese gaming giant on Tuesday unveiled the Wii video game console successor, which will broadcast high-definition video and feature a touchscreen controller that can detect motion and interact with what’s occurring on a television display. “Up until now, home console games had to occupy the TV screen in order to be played,” said Nintendo president Satoru Iwata. “The new controller for Wii U, with its 6.2-inch screen built in, means you won’t need to give up your game-

gaming industry’s annual convention, in several ways: displaying a player’s inventory in a “Legend of Zelda” game, being used as a shield from incoming attacks and offering an alternative way to play a chasing game. The Wii U will be released between April and December next year, and will work with Wii games and controllers. The price was not announced. DERRIK J. L ANG (AP)

Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin’s self-titled major-label debut is bedraggled and beautiful; sinister and sad; and heavy and slight, and Cults work these juxtapositions for all they’re worth. Cults want you to wonder about them, about the mystery that lies beneath their wispy, deceptively sunny songs. They rely, perhaps too heavily, on endless layers of reverb, on looped, disembodied vocals girded by what sound like innocent choruses of schoolkids. T.V. Carpio must have either the best luck in the world or the worst. Consider all that she’s endured these past months: She lands a small role in Broadway’s most expensive musical; sings with U2’s Bono; gets promoted to a starring part; performs on David Letterman’s show; gets whiplash; discovers that she has a thyroid disorder; turns 30; watches her patron get fired and has her role cut down. The one constant for the star of “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark” seems to be change. “You couldn’t make it up. It’s like a dream. A surreal dream. And I’m living it,” she says. Carpio has managed to keep perspective amid the behind-the-scenes

turmoil that saw original director Julie Taymor dismissed and Carpio’s part of Arachne cut down from an epic villain with five songs to a guardian angel with just three. “Like any relationship, there’s been a lot of ups and downs. I’m not going to lie and say there haven’t been gloomy times. Of course, it’s traumatizing when Mom and Dad get divorced,” she says. The stunt-heavy, $70 million show, with music by Bono and the Edge, began previews on Nov. 28 after years of delay but never officially opened, instead lurching from one embarrassment to another. Playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and director Philip William McKinley have since cleaned up the story, and the songs have been reworked. It finally is to open June 14. “Everybody’s worked very hard. Everybody’s put blood, sweat and tears in this. That includes tears of joy and tears of sadness,” Carpio says. MARK KENNEDY (AP)

For the follow-up to the Roots’ 2010 album “How I Got Over,” drummer ?uestlove, pictured, says the veteran hip-hop band is planning a “concept album” with orchestral arrangements. “It’s going to be heavy on orchestral chamber music with harder beats in it,” he says, adding that the band may release it this year, but a 2012 street date is more likely. Now Accepting Applications for Fall BA - Communication BS - Criminal Justice BS - Business Administration BSN - Nursing

Cayamo concerts are different in several ways. They start on time. They last only an hour. And the speakers hanging from the ceiling tend to sway. Sometimes the musicians do, too. “Usually, I go where I want onstage,” John Prine said. “But here I go where the ship takes me.” Cayamo is an annual music festival at sea featuring performers of Prine’s ilk — singer-songwriters with acoustic guitars and devoted fans. There are bands, too, and amplifiers, and all of the attractions that go with any other Caribbean trip. That means sunshine, shore excursions, a laid-back vibe and too much food. Mostly the 2,000 passengers come for music. That was the case when my wife and I took our first cruise in February to enjoy Cayamo aboard the Norwegian Pearl. It was a seven-day excursion — six days of concerts and one day listening to musicians tune. Or so it seemed. Not to quibble: The music was great. Main attractions included Prine, Brandi Carlile, the Indigo Girls, Steve Earle, Patty Griffin, Richard Thompson, Loudon Wainwright III and Buddy Miller. But one of the delights was dis-

All cabins have been booked, but a waiting list is available. Prices start at $1,235 per person for double occupancy interior cabins, so Jazz Fest or Bonnaroo would indeed be cheaper. But Cayamo has comfy chairs and no portable toilets, and you’re always within walking distance of the swimming pool, a dining room and your bed. covering lesser-known acts such as Scott Miller; Chuck Cannon; and Roddie Romero and the Hub City All-Stars. A partial lineup for February

2012 includes Prine, Thompson, Wainwright, Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt and Keb’ Mo’. Acts perform in half a dozen cozy venues, the largest seating about 800 people. On our trip, shows began in the afternoon, and music continued into the wee hours each night. One jam session in the atrium lasted until 2 a.m. and involved more than a dozen musicians from five bands. For the many music geeks on board, it was like being a spectator at a golf or tennis tournament. You’d study the schedule at the beginning of day and plan where you wanted to be when, who you were willing to miss and who you absolutely had to see. “It’s an experience that can’t be replicated on land,” said Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor of CruiseCritic.com. What’s sweeter than honey? The local trend toward raising bees in the District KhXWd <Whc_d] D.C.’s high pollen counts may make allergy sufferers sneeze and groan. But they’re a boon for bees, which use the golden powder to produce honey. And if you have enough outdoor space to grow f lowers, you might be able to keep your own hive. Eating honey gathered from the backyard sounds sweet. But caring for a swarm of stingers seems dangerous. “It’s easier than it seems,” says Toni Burnham, a veteran apiarist with two hives on Capitol Hil. To get buzzing, she recommends taking a class. “Beekeeping isn’t

something you can learn from a book,” she says. “You’re developing a relationship with a very different creature.” Find local intro courses via the Montgomery County Beekeepers Association of Maryland (Montgomerycountybeekeepers. com) and the Beekeepers Association of Northern Virginia (Beekeepersnova.org). Many first-timers often spend a season working with a seasoned mentor. “To be a successful beekeeper takes a lot of living with them, observing them and working next to someone who can teach you about what your eyes are seeing and your nose is smelling,” says Burnham. Hive masters can also turn to online forums such as Beesource (Beesource.com) for advice. Even though you’ll be as busy as a you-know-what putting your hive in during the spring, the work pays

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You can take an old familiar something and turn it into a novelty that enjoys a whole new life of its own. Creativity is on the rise.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You’ll want to pick up the pace and let things transpire more quickly across the board. Impatience, however, is not a safe motivator.
