The store didn’t press charges, but the teens received trespassing notices. Police tweeted about the incident with the hashtag #nocakeforyou. (AP)

THE DISTRICT Vice President Mike Pence’s wife, Karen, has opened their government residence to more than a few new inhabitants: honeybees. At least 15,000 of them. Karen Pence showed off the beehive Tuesday, partly to draw attention to a decline in managed bee colonies that she and other officials say could negatively affect U.S. agricultural production. One of three bites of food taken in the U.S. is possible with the help of pollinators such as bees, butterflies, birds and bats, Pence said during a gathering at the U.S. Naval Observatory compound in Northwest, where the vice president’s residence is located. Managed honeybee colonies add at least $15 billion a year in crop value by increasing yields

The Pences installed a hive with at least 15,000 bees to highlight the importance of pollinators to agriculture.

and helping ensure quality harvests. But a years-long decline in honeybee colonies “presents a serious challenge to our ability to produce many of the agricultural products that we sell and enjoy today,” Pence said. Fruits, vegetables and nuts are among 90 or so crops that managed honeybees pollinate for farmers, she said. Beehives are time-consuming to manage, but there are other ways consumers can help. Pence encouraged them to plant beefriendly flowers and herbs, such as wildflowers, lilacs, poppies, black-eyed Susans, mint, sage, squash, tomatoes, oregano and rosemary. People can also set out basins of water or install birdbaths so bees can get a drink. “J u s t i n t h e s p i r i t o f

democracy, let’s all get involved and do our part, whether it’s planting the plants or hosting a beehive just as Mrs. Pence has done here,” Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said. More than 80 percent of the land in the Pences’ home state of Indiana is dedicated to agriculture, and Karen Pence said the crops grown there depend on the “pollinating power” of bees. She installed a beehive at their official residence in Indiana and said she thought it would be helpful to do the same in Washington. The new hive has 15,000 to 20,000 honeybees, said Larry Marling of Eco Honeybees, the Virginia-based company that was hired to install the beehive. He said the total could grow to 40,000 to 50,000 bees by the end of the season. DARLENE SUPERVILLE (AP)

We’ve enjoyed a mild spring in D.C., with just touches of heat here and there. But starting Sunday and persisting well into next week, the most intense and longestlasting heat wave of the year so far is expected. Computer models agree: High temperatures in the low to mid-90s are likely from Sunday to Wednesday — and maybe even a little higher at times. Tuesday may turn out to be the hottest day, with mid-90s possible. Some models are projecting a high of up to 97 degrees. (TWP)

The 1,000-series cars date back to the opening of the Metro system in 1976. The 4,000-series cars are not as old, but have long been considered the least reliable cars in the system. (AP)

Campaign violations from ’14 run are cited as she preps for next race THE DISTRICT D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s campaign committee has been ordered to pay $13,000 in fines for taking campaign donations in excess of legal limits during her successful run for office in 2014. Bowser’s campaign kept more than $11,000 in illegal contributions from 13 developers, contractors, and Sanford Capital, a landlord that her administration has since been slow to fine for over 1,000 housing-code violations. The illegal contributions were first discovered in March by the nonprofit organization Public Citizen, which aims to limit the influence of money in politics. The D.C. Office of Campaign Finance had not said if it would investigate the allegations. However, late Tuesday it released documents saying several of the violations had been substantiated and that

Md. mother who suffocated two children gets 45 years

Feds: Officers discussed how to beat their charges

A Maryland mother who suffocated her two young children with plastic bags was sentenced to 45 years prison Spoon Wednesday, time that will be served in a state-run mental health facility. Sonya Spoon, 26, of Cheverly, pleaded guilty in March to two counts of seconddegree murder in the September 2014 deaths of her children, Kayla Thompson, 3, and Ayden Thompson, 1. Spoon killed her children one week after she was taken to a local hospital for an emergency psychiatric evaluation. (TWP)

Federal prosecutors allege that several Baltimore police officers charged with racketeering met in a detention center to discuss how to “beat” some of their charges. The Baltimore Sun reported that the allegations were made in a recent filing in the case against Detective Marcus Taylor, one of seven officers indicted in March. They’re accused of robbing people, filing false court paperwork and making fraudulent overtime claims. They have pleaded not guilty. The filing, an attempt to keep Taylor behind bars, says he discussed the case with co-defendants while being held, but doesn’t name other officers. (AP)

ISIS takes a new tack — striking at heart of Iran Group’s direct assaults in Tehran hit parliament and tomb of Khomeini TEHRAN, IRAN The Islamic State has struck at Iran and its allies for years — but always from afar, in places such as Iraq against Tehran-backed militias and in Syria battling government troops aided by Iranian forces. That appeared to change Wednesday, when bloodshed came to Tehran. Twin attacks, the first major assaults in Iran claimed by ISIS, targeted the heart of Iran’s political identity and the notion that militants were no match for the security forces zealously guarding Tehran. The attacks left at least

12 victims dead and 40 hurt in the parliament building and outside the tomb of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the nation’s 1979 Islamic revolution. The bloodshed came as emboldened Sunni Arab states — backed by President Trump — are hardening their stance against Shiite-ruled Iran. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard indirectly blamed Saudi Arabia for the attacks. A statement Wednesday stopped short of alleging direct Saudi involvement but called it “meaningful” that the attacks followed Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia, where he strongly asserted Washington’s support for Riyadh. The violence began in midmor n i ng when assa i l a nts stormed the parliament complex,

where a legislative session was in progress. The siege lasted for hours; one attacker blew himself up inside. As the parliament attack unfolded, gunmen and suicide bombers also struck outside Khomeini’s mausoleum on the southern outskirts of the city. The Interior Ministry said six assailants were killed — four at the parliament and two at the tomb. The attacks — coming in the middle of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan — appeared calculated to elicit maximum shock among Iranians. They also could have been intended to boost ISIS’ stature among backers as it faces a two-pronged assault against its key urban strongholds in Iraq and Syria. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

Bones found in a cave in Morocco add at least 100,000 years to the history of modern human fossils. These bones are from “early anatomically modern” humans — our own species, Homo sapiens, with a mixture of modern and primitive traits, an international team of scientists reported in a pair of papers published Wednesday in the journal Nature. Despite their primitive features, these ancient people could blend in with a modern crowd, study author Jean-Jacques Hublin said. The oldest Homo sapiens bones previously known date to about 200,000 years ago, but the new analysis shows these bones are 300,000 to 350,000 years old. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Spotlight back on Comey Testimony by the fired FBI director, known for delivering bombshells, is likely to be historic

What Comey plans to tell lawmakers Here are five takeaways from written remarks fired FBI Director James Comey submitted to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday. (TWP)

Intel chiefs mum on Trump conversations

Today, former FBI Director James Comey will make his first public appearance since being fired.

watching. Though he has scheduled a midday appearance, Trump may live-tweet his reactions if he feels prompted to respond to Comey’s testimony, according to two White House officials who were not authorized to speak publicly. White House staffers have signaled they will try to portray Comey as an unreliable witness. “The last time he testified under oath, the FBI had to scurry to correct the testimony,’’ adviser Kellyanne Conway said earlier this week. That was a reference to Comey’s May 3 congressional testimony, in which the then-FBI director, as he was describing

the bureau’s probe of Hillary Clinton’s emails, misstated the number and type of emails forwarded by a Clinton aide. After the president abruptly fired Comey last month, associates of the former FBI director revealed the president had repeatedly pressed him about the investigation of possible contacts between his associates and Russian operatives. They said Comey felt the conversations with the president often veered into improper areas, and Comey took pains to prepare for the talks with Trump and to make detailed written records after each one.

Analysts who have studied Comey’s career expect he will tell the tale in a way that draws clear moral lines through what might otherwise be murky legal matters. “James Comey has the quiet confidence and a track record of knowing how to dominate, how to direct the story,” said Karen Greenberg, the director of the Center on National Security at Fordham University. “He trusts his conscience, and he’s not afraid to stand up to people who he thinks are wrong. It’s where he sees morality intersect with the law.” DEVLIN BARRETT AND ELLEN NAKASHIMA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Lift the cloud’

At a dinner in January, Trump asked Comey if he wanted to stay on as FBI director, “which I found strange because he had already told me twice … that he hoped I would stay, and I had assured him that I intended to,” Comey wrote.

Later at that dinner, Trump told him, “I need loyalty, I expect loyalty.” Comey wrote, “We simply looked at each other in silence.” When prompted again on the subject, Comey said he replied, “You will always get honesty from me.”

Comey said that once before the inauguration, and again at the dinner, he assured Trump that he was not personally under investigation, confirming a key claim that Trump has made that he was told he was not under investigation.

In a private talk on Feb. 14, Trump said, “I want to talk about Mike Flynn,” whose ties to Russia are being probed. “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy,’’ the president said, according to Comey.

In late March, Trump called Comey at the FBI, saying the Russia probe was “a cloud’’ hanging over his ability to lead the country. “He asked what we could do to ‘lift the cloud.’ I responded that we were investigating … as quickly as we could.”

POLITICS When James Comey sits down before a microphone today in his first public appearance since he was fired as director of the FBI, a key question he’ll face is whether he believes President Trump tried to obstruct an ongoing federal probe of his associates. Even before Comey has uttered a word before the Senate Intelligence Committee, some predict the hearing will be historic — a moment in which a former senior official has a nationally televised platform to repudiate a president who has lashed out at the federal government he leads. “Comey has made a career of providing bombshell testimony to Congress,’’ said Tracy Schmaler, a former Senate Judiciary Committee staffer who attended a 2007 hearing in which Comey captivated the capital with an account of apparent White House interference with Justice Department decision-making. “In that respect, [today] will be what everyone’s expecting — the most anticipated hearing so far in the Trump administration.” The president might also be

NATIONAL SECURITY Two of the U.S.’s top intelligence officials declined in a testy hearing Wednesday to discuss specifics of private conversations with President Trump. Testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats, above, demurred when asked whether it was true, as The Washington Post reported Tuesday, that Trump asked Coats if he could intervene with thenFBI Director James Comey to get him to back off the bureau’s focus on Michael Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser. “I don’t believe it’s appropriate for me to address that in a public session,’’ Coats said, adding that he didn’t have a legal justification for declining to answer. Similarly, National Security Agency Director Michael S. Rogers declined to answer a question about whether Trump asked him to deny the existence of any evidence showing coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia, as the Post reported last month. “I’m not going to discuss the specifics of any conversations with the president of the United States,” Rogers said. Both men did say they never felt pressure to do anything inappropriate or to intervene in an ongoing probe. One lawmaker called the officials’ refusal to address the reports “filibustering.” ELLEN NAKASHIMA AND KAROUN DEMIRJIAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA | A wave washes over a car Wednesday in the Sea Point neighborhood in Cape Town, part of a storm that officials said took eight lives in an area recovering from drought. The victims included four who died in a lightning-caused fire and one who died in a home collapse. Hundreds of homes were damaged.

Brexit, attacks weigh heavily in UK voting today UNITED KINGDOM After a seven-week election campaign that veered from the boredom of staged sound bites to the trauma of two deadly attacks, Britain’s leaders asked voters Wednesday to decide today who is the best person to keep the U.K. safe and lead it out of the European Union. Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May, above, and Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn crisscrossed the country on the final day of campaigning, trying to woo voters with rival plans for Brexit and combating a terrorist threat made all too immediate by attacks in Manchester and London. The death toll in London increased to eight, officials said Wednesday, after a body was found in the Thames River. All 650 seats in the House of Commons are up for grabs in today’s ballot. May called the snap election three years early in a bid to boost the Conservative majority in Parliament, which she said will strengthen Britain’s hand in talks with the EU. “Get those negotiations wrong and the consequences will be dire,” she said Wednesday. Corbyn said the vote offered a choice between “another five years of a Tory government, underfunding of services all across the U.K. ... or a Labour government that invests for all.” Labour has had a better campaign than many expected, with polls showing a narrowing of the gap between it and the Conservatives. U.S. defender DeAndre Yedlin, 23, helped Newcastle reclaim a spot in the Premier League.

U.S. VS. TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO | 8 TONIGHT, FS1

Yedlin went down to raise his game up SOCCER Life has always moved fast for DeAndre Yedlin, the swift right back for the U.S. men’s team. After two years of college at Akron, he signed a contract with his hometown Seattle Sounders. Four months after his national team debut, he was, at age 20, chasing Cristiano Ronaldo at the World Cup. Two seasons in MLS preceded a $4 million transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League. By late last summer, though, Yedlin confronted a stark reality: To go forward in his career, he would need to go back. Returning from a season-long loan with Sunderland, he realized he didn’t have a future at Tottenham. There was opportunity at Newcastle United, Sunderland’s ancient rival in provincial northeast England. The Magpies, however,

had fallen out of the Premier League, relegated to the secondflight Championship circuit. For Yedlin, a young player in need of minutes, a move down was an opportunity to play regularly. Sunderland had fancied him for a permanent transfer, but the asking price was too rich. So Tottenham sold him to Newcastle for more than $6 million. Playing in the lower league was a risk, but “it paid off,” Yedlin said. With Yedlin earning rave reviews, Newcastle won the league trophy and restored its place in the Premier League. Accordingly, Yedlin, 23, will also return to the top tier. In the aftermath of a championship campaign, Yedlin returned stateside last month, staying in shape by training with the Sounders before reporting to U.S. camp for his first assignment under new coach Bruce Arena. After missing the March qualifiers with a hamstring injury, Yedlin is the top candidate to start on the right corner against

“He’s an improved player,” Arena said. “He’s still a young player. ... Now he has to learn to be a player who just doesn’t count on the fact that he’s fast. He’s got to be a little better mentally.” After two previous stops in England, Yedlin relishes not only the return to the Premier League, but the chance to make long-term plans with a team — he has four years left on his contract — and a city that he loves. “There’s something to be said for not worrying about the next move,” he said. “It’s good to finally be settled in one place, and hopefully for a long time.”

In December, the Barcelona superstar renewed a deal with Adidas that accounts for half of his $27 million in endorsement dollars.

Homer by Zimmerman is the lone blemish for the Dodgers’ ace DODGERS 2, NATIONALS 1 What had been hailed as a rare starters’ showdown lived up to its hype Wednesday, though neither Nationals righty Stephen Strasburg nor Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw was still standing by the time Washington made the final out of a 2-1 loss in Los Angeles. But when the Nationals had a chance to tie the game late, the Dodgers’ bullpen held them off, sending them to their second loss

in nine games on what was supposed to be a grueling, three-city California trip. Washington hosts Baltimore tonight (7:05, MASN, MASN2). Wednesday’s aces were set to face off on ESPN last season, but Strasburg was a late scratch with a back injury, which left a national audience disappointed. This time, a healthy Strasburg allowed a hit in the first inning but no more until the sixth. By that time, he led 1-0 thanks to Ryan Zimmerman, who improved to 8-for-23 lifetime against Kershaw when he hit a first-pitch homer in the second inning, his 17th of the season.

Kershaw barely outduels Strasburg

Lefty Clayton Kershaw struck out nine over seven innings of one-run ball.

Kershaw came to the plate in the sixth and battled Strasburg through a nine-pitch at-bat. Kershaw grounded out but significantly decreased the chances

of Strasburg pitching into the eighth or ninth. A few batters later, Corey Seager hit a solo home run that tied the game. After a dropped third strike

by Jose Lobaton, a wild pitch and a Yasmani Grandal double, the Dodgers led, and Strasburg’s pitch count had crossed 100. His day ended after six innings in which he allowed one earned run on three hits, walked one intentionally and struck out eight. Kershaw was pulled after striking out nine in seven innings. Trea Turner started the eighth with a triple, but he was later tagged out by Grandal at the plate when Bryce Harper grounded back to Pedro Baez. Kenley Jansen got a four-out save, ensuring Kershaw (8-2) got the win and Strasburg (7-2) the loss. CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Sooner surprise: Stoops retires after 18 years at OU

Things seem BRIGHTER

Coach Bob Stoops announced his retirement Wednesday, a stunning move by the future Hall of Famer who led Oklahoma to 11 conference titles and a national championship in 18 seasons. Stoops, 56, said his health is good, but the timing was perfect “to hand over the reins.” Offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley, 33, will replace Stoops, making him the youngest head coach in FBS. Last month, OU gave Riley a three-year extension worth $1.3 million per year. (AP) NBA FINALS

CHESAPEAKE SHAKESPEARE COMPANY

Breath of fresh Shakespeare

Shakespeare’s audiences didn’t need things like air conditioning and roofs. The Bard’s works were originally performed in the open air, and local theater companies are still embracing the concept today — without the open sewers and bubonic plague. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

The Chesapeake Shakespeare Company takes the show outdoors.

‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ Shakespeare’s most hilarious play is “Pyramus and Thisbe,” which you may not remember from high school English. That’s because it’s contained within “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which itself is pretty good. There are fairies and lovers and a guy who gets a

donkey head, and then the queen of the fairies falls in love with the donkey-headed guy. Eventually, everyone goes home happy, with normal, human heads. The Baltimore Shakespeare Factory’s production will be performed in a meadow Fridays through Sundays in July, before moving indoors for the

last weekend of the month. Johns Hopkins’ Evergreen Museum & Library, 4545 N. Charles St., Baltimore; July 7-23, $15-$20.

‘The Tempest’ A giant storm starts off “The Tempest,” the last play Shakespeare wrote solo, as Prospero the

wizard rains down vengeance on the enemies who screwed him out of his dukedom 12 years ago. Though categorized as one of Will’s comedies, “The Tempest” takes on heavy themes of colonialism, race, age and forgiveness. For the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company’s rendition, performed in

the ruins of a Civil War-era finishing school, you can reserve a six-seater picnic table (an additional $60) or a table for two (an additional $29). Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park, 3691 Sarah’s Lane, Ellicott City, Md.; Wed. through July 23, $15.50-$42.50.

‘The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)’ If you like the taste of Shakespeare but don’t feel like a whole meal, this show from the Fat and Greasy Citizens Brigade is like Cliffs Notes on crack. The three cast members need only 97 minutes to take you through the Shakespeare canon. Bring a picnic or pick up snacks on-site from Dog Tag Bakery. JASON HORNICK (FOR EXPRESS)

COMEDY If you have a great story to tell, one that immediately grabs the audience’s attention with high stakes and culminates in a conclusion both specific and universal — well, that story would not go over well at “Off the Rails!,” a free, twice-a-month storytelling show hosted by comedian Katherine Jessup at Drafthouse Comedy. “Traditional storytellers often struggle at my show, especially if they are tied to a specific ending for their story,” Jessup says. That’s why, unlike groups like Story League and Story District — which invite amateurs onstage to tell stories — Jessup sticks to seasoned performers, usually fellow comedians. Another key difference: Jessup asks performers to adjust their tales on the spot, based on random interjections she writes just before the show. “I might interrupt them and read a scene I wrote that sounds like it’s from a sci-fi movie,” she says. So a comedian’s wellpracticed tale about joining the Army could end with an underwater dance-off between aliens.

“The point of the show is to get storytellers and stand-up comics to go off-script and be in the moment,” Jessup says. “It’s a really hard skill to learn, which is why I started the show — to be a fun way for us to eat our vegetables.” One of a growing number of nationally touring comedians based in D.C., Jessup has always considered herself a stronger writer than performer. She launched “Off the Rails!” about a year ago to get better at reacting to unexpected, unscripted events.

That’s an essential skill for any performer — especially stand-up comedians, who often face less than ideal circumstances such as hecklers in the audience. “You don’t want to start floundering when things really do go off the rails,” she says. Jessup’s hobby of deconstructing stories mirrors her life, which has taken some unexpected turns. “I went to grad school for international development, interned at the World Bank, worked in the media, worked at a yarn

store and now I’m a contractor at the Hirshhorn,” she says. “I’ve dabbled in comedy the whole time, but within the last year I’ve been trying more aggressively to focus on becoming a nationally known comedian.” Besides hosting “Off the Rails!” Jessup performs at festivals (including D.C.’s Bentzen Ball), and co-hosts the weekly podcast “Advice! With Dave & Kat.” As Jessup takes her life story in wild new directions, you can catch her at Drafthouse every month, encouraging other comedians to do the same with made-up tales. (For Friday’s show, Steven Chen, Adelle Gresock, Andrew Hall, Reggie Melbrough, Tim Miller, Mindi Mimosa and Max Wolfson will all take the stage.) “I wanted ‘Off The Rails!’ to be a safe, fun space to try something new,” she says. “It’s a weird show that’s different than anything else that’s happening in the city at the moment.” SADIE DINGFELDER (EXPRESS)

At Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival later this month in Massachusetts, the band will perform its 1996 album “Being There” in full. For drummer Glenn Kotche, above, who joined the alt rock outfit in 2001, it’s a fullcircle moment. “That was the first Wilco I ever heard,” he says. Before the band hits Wolf Trap Friday, Kotche named the first three songs that popped into his head. RUDI GREENBERG (EXPRESS)

1

‘In the Dirt’ S. Carey

At the Eaux Claires festival in Wisconsin, Kotche will collaborate with Bon Iver drummer Sean Carey (aka S. Carey), and they plan to play this piano-driven track. “It’s pretty low-key, but the way it unfolds is unpredictable,” he says.

2

‘Foli Ke’ On Fillmore

Kotche’s side project On Fillmore recently released its fourth album, “Happiness of Living.” This song, inspired by a trip to Brazil, features a cacophony of percussive instruments and chanted vocals. “It’s just incredibly fun to play,” Kotche says. “It’s got a really interesting groove.”

3

‘Play’ Andrew Norman

Kotche listened to this 2014 orchestral piece from composer Norman on a recent drive. “He takes a lot of inspiration from video games, in terms of how things unfold,” he says. “Parts of it are really jumpy and erratic.”

You CAN go to the Union Market Drive-In without a car (which makes it free), but then you don’t get the full auto-based, making-out-in-the-backseat experience. This year’s schedule of Friday night flicks includes “Coming to America” (July 7), “Chef” (Aug. 4) and “Clue” (Sept. 29). Best of all, the snack bar comes to you, as members of the DC Rollergirls roller derby team will take your order from local vendors and skate the food and drinks right to your window.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization is highlighting the movies of 30-ish years ago. The group’s Thursday series includes “Spaceballs” (June 29) and “Weekend at Bernie’s” (Aug. 10). Its Saturday series includes “Moonstruck” (June 24) and “Big” (Aug. 5). Bring your own snacks — but no alcohol.

Georgetown’s Sunset Cinema series embraces girl power this summer with five films about game-changing women. The first four are “A League of Their Own” (July 11), “Hidden Figures” (July 18), “Brooklyn” (July 25) and “Erin Brockovich” (Aug. 1); the fifth, “The Devil Wears Prada” (Aug. 8), was decided by popular vote on a Facebook post. Bring a blanket, bring a picnic, bring your daughters (and your sons).

For movies, movies and more movies, head to National Harbor. This series runs on Thursdays and Sundays, and some of the Sunday showings are double features. Sundays bring family-friendly fare like “Monsters, Inc.” (July 30) and a “Happy Feet” and “Frozen” double feature (July 16). Thursday nights bring crowd-pleasers like “Mean Girls” (July 13), “Top Gun” (Aug. 24) and “Sleepless in Seattle” (Sept. 14).

Union Market, 1309 Fifth St. NE; through Nov. 3 (various dates and times); $10 per car, free for walk-ins.

Then settle in for some of last year’s blockbusters (the only movies on the lineup not from 2016 are “Sister Act” on June 15, “Grease” on July 6 and this year’s live-action “Beauty and the Beast” on Aug. 17). Best picture nominees “Arrival” (July 27) and “La La Land” (Aug. 3) make appearances, as do blockbusters “Doctor Strange” (June 22) and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (July 20). June 17–August 13 | Theater Lab Who better to comment on the state of our nation than the comedians who mock it best? The Second City returns for another summer of uproarious irreverence in The Second City’s Almost Accurate Guide to America: Divided We Stand. You may think you know America, but if the last year has taught us anything, it’s that there are many different Americas to get to know. Alas, there is still one thing the blue states and red states share—the need for a good laugh! Age 16+

summer guide

06.09 Paul Simon When singer-songwriter Paul Simon played in Queens, his childhood home, last summer, he hinted that it might be his final tour. But the 75-year-old legend is back at it this summer, and headlining Merriweather Post Pavilion. From the intimate early Simon and Garfunkel songs to the syncopated levity of “Graceland,” Simon has a talent for capturing a persistent human longing. A thread of elusive searching flows through his songs, from “Homeward Bound” to “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover.” Sarah McLachlan opens this show with her own brand of deeply emotional tunes.

07.08 Mitski On “Puberty 2,” some of Mitski’s lyrics can belie the darkness and violence of her work: “I will go jogging routinely/ Calmly and rhythmically run,” she sings on “Fireworks,” “And when I find that a knife is sticking out of my side, I’ll pull it out without questioning why.” The album is full of knives in your side and unanswered questions as the 26-yearold — who headlines 9:30 in July — bounds from Pixiesque loud-quiet-loud dynamics to narcotic ballads to trebly punk meltdowns, all while exposing the sordid underbelly of 21stcentury romance.

HE R

On her debut album, “SweetSexySavage,” Kehlani, who performs at the Fillmore next month, aimed to capture the three elements of its title, and the Oakland singer-songwriter succeeded. “SweetSexySavage” updates the crazy, sexy, cool R&B of TLC, Aaliyah and Brandy for millennial listeners and finds the 22-yearold equally adept at rap-fueled slow dances, guitarstrumming ballads and bubbly pop jams about learning from the hiccups and hookups of youthful relationships. Being a pop star in 2017 is tough, but, as she sings on the album, “Live for the challenge, only make[s] me stronger.”

entertainment FILM

Is this woman capable of killing her husband and slowly poisoning his heir? You be the judge.

FOX SEARCHLIGHT

Paulson, Rhys and Whitford join Pentagon Papers movie

Is a serial killer loose in ‘My Cousin Rachel’? Rachel Weisz doesn’t know if she portrays a murderer. Or does she? FILM In “My Cousin Rachel,” based on Daphne du Maurier’s gothic 1951 novel, Rachel Weisz plays a woman — the Rachel of the title — who, after her abusive husband dies, returns from their home in Italy to his British manor house. There, she meets her husband’s ward Philip (Sam Claflin), who wrongly blames her for his guardian’s death. He becomes obsessed with proving her guilt and, in doing so, becomes suspicious that she’s trying to kill him as well. Or. Rachel killed her husband in order to take control of his vast wealth; upon returning to England and discovering that Philip is the heir, she seduces him, gets control of the money and then begins to slowly poison Philip to ensure her hold on the family fortune. As in du Maurier’s

novel, the murderer (or not) is in the eye of the beholder. There’s only one woman who can solve this he-said-she-said ambiguity, and it’s Weisz herself. “I’m not going to tell you,” the actress says. It was worth a shot. Weisz does, however, know what she THINKS Rachel’s intentions are, even though no one else — including director Roger Michell — knows what she thinks. “I don’t know how to deliberately be mysterious or ambiguous,” Weisz, who starred in last year’s “The Light Between Oceans,” says of her acting method. “I know what [Rachel] was up to — or not up to — but the way it was directed and the way in which the narrative was strung together, it becomes ambiguous and open to interpretation.” The question of whether Rachel is a serial killer isn’t the only thing Weisz thinks audiences will debate after seeing “My Cousin Rachel,” which opens locally today at Landmark’s E Street and

Bethesda Row cinemas. Though the book is set in the 1850s, du Maurier “gives this character a very 20th-century aura about her, in that she has her own sexual appetites, she doesn’t feel guilty about it, she has a different morality than those around her,” Weisz says. “She has an extremely modern sensibility, and I think it will bring out how people see women’s sexuality today.” Weisz credits Michell for creating a film with plenty of space for argument. “It’s fascinating when a piece of fiction causes a debate,” she says. “When I talk to people, they all go, ‘Yes, she’s poisoning him’ or ‘No, she’s not,’ and they feel very strongly about it. Roger has been very skillful in telling a story where people are going to be arguing about what they think is the truth.” But Weisz has the answer, right? “It depends if you think what I think is ‘right,’ ” she says. “But no one is ever going to know that.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

More casting news has been announced regarding the Steven Spielberg-directed movie about The Washington Post’s decision to publish the Pentagon Papers. Joining Tom Hanks (who’s playing Post executive editor Ben Bradlee) and Meryl Streep (who is playing publisher Katharine Graham) are Sarah Paulson, below, of “American Horror Story,” Matthew Rhys of “The Americans,” Bradley Whitford of “The West Wing,” Alison Brie of “Mad Men” and Bob Odenkirk of “Better Call Saul,” per The Hollywood Reporter. Filming is underway on the project, the title of which is now “The Papers,” instead of “The Post.” Its limited-release date is Dec. 22. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

For Shakira, work can always wait MUSIC Shakira is a Grammy-winning, multi-platinum singer, but these days she’s calling music a hobby. “For years I spent my life pressing pause on those things that are now my priority, like having a family,” says the Colombian sensation, 40, who has two sons, ages 2 and 4. Making new music wasn’t easy. Shakira says she wanted to keep being with her kids, but also wanted to attend to her needs “as a creator, as an artist, as a producer.” So she rolled out music at her own pace, without announcing plans for an album. “Instead of looking at this project like a big Everest mountain that I had to climb,” she says, “I began to see it as a ... fun road trip.” Before last month’s release of “El Dorado,” her 11th album, which is mostly in Spanish with some English songs, Shakira dropped four singles. One of them was “Me Enamore,” which features her partner, soccer player Gerard Pique, in the music video. The song pays homage to “the turning point in our lives when everything changed for both of us,” she says. New songs like “Amarillo” and “Coconut Tree” are also about Pique. “These songs are very personal songs, but I have no other way to make music,” Shakira says. “It’s the only way I know. It’s [a] catharsis for me. ... Otherwise I would have to pay too many shrinks, and they’re expensive.” MESFIN FEKADU (AP)

@SAHILKAPUR, on this week’s Us Weekly cover story on Ivanka Trump headlined, “Why I Disagree With My Dad.” Despite the first-person wording, she is not quoted in the story; reporters spoke with anonymous sources close to the president and quoted from old interviews. Many pointed out that the article seemed to be a puff piece for the first daughter after the magazine was bought by the Trump-friendly National Enquirer in March. The quote also became a meme about fictional characters who disagree with their dads.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’re likely to attract some attention, but perhaps for the wrong reason. You may have to undo a strange error. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’ll start the day on a note of high expectation and hit the ground running, but things may get bogged down through no fault of yours. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You have a great many details to iron out before you can get in touch with someone and tell them everything is ready to go. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your process is still evolving, despite your feeling that everything is as it should be. Give yourself a little more time. WEDNESDAY’S SOLUTION

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Keeping

track of all the little things will be important throughout the day. It’s not enough to have an understanding of the big picture.

WEDNESDAY’S SOLUTION

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You don’t want to be the cause of any rising tensions, so why not just let bygones be bygones? SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You’re likely to receive a warning from a loved one that will throw you off balance, but later on you’ll receive needed comfort. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You may be suspicious of someone’s motives, but there’s little you can do to set things right (if indeed they are wrong).

TODAY: A storm system off the Atlantic coast keeps our skies at least partly cloudy, though we should be a bit brighter than Wednesday. It looks like only a shower is possible, unless that system tracks farther west than anticipated. Our winds start to shift tonight, signaling the approach of a more summery weather pattern.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Your ability to see what is really going on — despite everyone else’s apparent blindness — will serve you well. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You can make others laugh in order to get past something that was more troubling than it should have been. It’s the best medicine, after all.

Alex Rodriguez, who is dating Jennifer Lopez, seems to be caught up in some drama with former flames. According to TMZ, a woman, who was not named, is threatening to expose their past private messages if he doesn’t pay her $660,000. She was reportedly a “fling,” and sources said Rodriguez is allowing his legal team to handle it. Meanwhile, the National Enquirer reported he has been “sexting” with fitness model Lauren Hunter (who claims she dated Rodriguez in 2011) while also seeing Lopez. A source close to Rodriguez told the New York Post that the claims were “laughable.” (EXPRESS)
