Vandals trashed a fairgrounds booth in Maine over the weekend, stealing 120 whoopie pies and half a gallon of iced tea. John Youney of the Skowhegan Lions Club told the Morning Sentinel a fridge full of cookies was emptied and plastic gloves and silverware littered the floor. The group discovered the break-in at their booth on Sunday. Youney said the culprit can confess and work off the crime by assisting the club with its volunteer work. (AP)

Two Portland, Ore., protesters were sentenced to five days in jail for throwing horse lubricant mixed with gold glitter on two police officers at a protest. The district attorney’s office says the men were protesting against a rally organized by a right-wing group called Patriot Prayer when the officers asked to see what was in two 4-gallon buckets they were carrying. Prosecutors say the protesters instead sprayed the slimy liquid on the officers and ran. (AP)

a photo op designed to highlight Franco-American unity. Things seemed amiss shortly afterward, when reporters

noticed that it had been removed from its spot. But then-French Ambassador Gérard Araud tweeted that the young oak had simply been put in a standardissue quarantine. It seems that the sapling didn’t survive its exile. Le Monde reported the demise, confirmed to Agence France-Presse by a “diplomatic source.” The White House did not immediately return a request for comment. The tree came from Belleau Woods, the site where nearly 2,000 Marines died in World War I. Its passing comes as ties between Trump and Macron appear to be fraying over differences over Iran, trade and the role of the European Union. Twitter wags pounced on the metaphor, of course. WASHINGTON The Saga of the Tree has a sad ending, it turns out: A sapling given to President Trump by French President Emmanuel Macron with great fanfare has died, according to French news reports — and the symbolism wasn’t lost on people who noted the strained relationship between the world leaders. The roots of the story go back to April 2018, when the MacronTrump friendship was being described as a “bromance,” and the French president and his wife, Brigitte, were feted at the only state dinner the Trumps have hosted. Plans for new campus shift Va. Tech development to be located closer to Amazon in Arlington POLITICS

Virginia races could reshape party control

VIRGINIA TECH

TECHNOLOGY Virginia Tech will build its new Innovation Campus in Alexandria’s Potomac Yard, just south of Four Mile Run along the Metro tracks, as part of a 65-acre mixed-use development, the school announced Monday. The new location will put the $1 billion campus a half-mile closer to the new Amazon headquarters in the Crystal City and Pentagon City neighborhoods of Arlington County. The school had previously planned to build its million-square-foot campus at Oakville Triangle, a 20-acre site along Richmond Highway filled with warehouses. But that property did not leave enough room for the school to grow, university and city officials said. “We don’t need 65 acres ourselves, but we need to be able to place partners near us as part of an ecosystem,” Virginia Tech President Tim Sands said. The campus, part of Virginia’s economic development pitch to Amazon for hosting its second headquarters, plans to graduate about 1,500 master’s degree students and 250 doctoral students

when completed. They will join 60,000 Virginia Tech alumni who live in the D.C. area. (Amazon founder Jeff Bezos owns Express and The Washington Post.) The school will occupy about 15 acres between Four Mile Run and the Regal Cinemas theater. The remaining 50 acres, which contain the Potomac Yard shopping center, will become 7.5 million square feet of offices, multifamily housing, retail and hotel uses, property management officials said. An advantage of the site,

according to Sands and the development team, is that a new campus and community will be created from scratch, with roads, rail and bus systems in place. Plans show one academic building, with a second to be added; an incubator space for startups, research and development; offices for industry collaboration; and a parking garage. Public space and ground-floor retail also is planned. The state is providing $250 million for the campus, to be matched

Work begins on extending reversible I-95 toll lanes

D.C. Chief Financial Officer Jeffrey S. DeWitt said Monday he will not certify the $15.5 billion budget approved by D.C. lawmakers last month, asserting that the spending plan improperly diverts money that should help repay the city’s debts for its convention center. Virginia primary contests today could help shift the balance of power in the General Assembly. It’s the only state this year where there’s a chance of Democrats flipping control of the legislature. Republicans have narrow majorities in both the House and Senate. Here’s a quick guide. (AP) The Stakes An unusually high number of Democratic incumbents are being challenged by newcomers. GOP campaigns have been fueled by resentment over last year’s vote to expand Medicaid. This year’s legislative elections could signal national trends in 2020.

Top races Longtime Senate Minority Leader Dick Saslaw has his first primary challengers in 40 years. Sen. Emmett Hanger, R-Augusta, finance committee head, is facing challenger Tina Freitas, who has hammered Hanger’s vote to expand Medicaid.

Local races Parisa Dehghani-Tafti in Arlington County and Steve Descano in Fairfax County face incumbents Theo Stamos and Ray Morrogh for the top prosecutor jobs. The challengers want more fairness for the accused, while incumbents say they’ve implemented reforms.

Trudeau: Canada will ban single-use plastics

verbatim

“I was giving it thought at a time when Joe Biden had not made up his mind. I’m delighted he’s in the race.”

ENVIRONMENT Canada will ban single-use plastics as early as 2021, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday. Trudeau said the specific items to be banned will be determined based on a science-based review, but the government is considering items such as water bottles, plastic bags and straws. “As early as 2021, Canada will ban harmful single-use plastics from coast to coast,” Trudeau said. Trudeau said his government is drawing inspiration from the European Union’s Parliament, which voted overwhelmingly in March to impose a wide-ranging ban on single-use plastics to counter pollution from discarded items that end up in waterways and fields. Legislatures of the EU member states must vote on the measure before it takes effect. “Many other countries are doing that and Canada will be one of them,” Trudeau said. “This is a big step but we know can do this for 2021.” Less than 10% of plastic used in Canada gets recycled. The government said that 1 million birds and over 100,000 sea mammals worldwide are injured or die each year when they mistake plastic for food or become entangled.

Following EU’s lead, the country will enact restrictions by 2021

FORMER SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN KERRY, saying he’s excited

that Joe Biden has entered the Democratic presidential race and that he had given some consideration to running himself before the former vice president decided to launch a bid. Kerry, 75, and Biden, 76, served together in the U.S. Senate.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday announced that his country will ban plastic items such as water bottles and straws by 2021.

The EU’s measure would affect a range of plastic products for which reasonable alternatives exist, from straws to earbuds, starting in 2021. Disposable utensils would not be completely off-limits, but the EU measure calls for them to be made of sustainable materials when possible. The EU legislation also sets a goal of having 90% of plastic bottles recycled by 2025 and of halving the litter from the 10 items that turn up in oceans most often. The EU estimated the changes will cost the bloc’s economy 259 million to 695 million euros a

year ($291 million to $781 million). It’s not clear what the cost would be for Canada. China’s decision to no longer import some of the EU’s waste helped spur the plastics ban. China banned the import of plastic waste last year, leading other Southeast Asian nations to become new destinations. The Philippines, which has complained of being treated like a dumpsite by wealthier nations, shipped 69 containers of what its officials called illegally transported garbage back to Canada in May. Vatican rejects idea people can change gender RELIGION The Vatican issued an official document Monday rejecting the idea that people can choose or change their genders and insisting on the sexual “complementarity” of men and women to make babies. The document, published during Pride Month, was denounced by LGBT Catholics as contributing to bigotry and violence against gay and transgender people. Advocacy group New Ways Ministry said it would further confuse individuals questioning their gender identity or sexual orientation and at risk of self-harm. The text was intended to help Catholic teachers, parents, students and clergy address what the Vatican called an “educational crisis” in the field of sex education. It called for a “path of dialogue” and listening on the issue of “gender theory” in education. But even priestly advocates for LGBT Catholics noted the text appeared to have relied entirely on previous papal pronouncements, Vatican documents and philosophers and theologians. “The real-life experiences of LGBT people seem entirely absent from this document,” said the Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit priest who wrote a book on improving outreach to the LGBT community. ‘’We should welcome the congregation’s call to dialogue and listening on gender, and I hope that conversation will now begin.” NICOLE WINFIELD (AP)

Not the retiring types

In the D.C. region and Northeast, people are more likely to keep working past age 65 Professor doing what he loves Steve Burghardt, a professor of social work at the City University of New York, said: “I consider myself to be a very fortunate person to still do what I loved at 27 at 74. I feel advantaged being in New York, where you’re exposed to sights and sounds and differences that are always exposing me to new ways to understand myself and to learn from other people.” (AP)

forces in the U.S. — three of the 11 counties that saw senior participation rates climb the fastest between 2009 and 2017 are located within 70 miles of Washington. But large, populous counties don’t have a monopoly on senior participation in the labor force. Vermont, one of the least populous states, holds two counties that rank among the top 100 (Windham and Washington counties) in terms of senior participation. “Despite whatever misnomers might exist, there is a great demand out there for mature workers,” says Mary Branagan, director of program and partner affairs at Associates for Training and Development, a workforce training and development outfit headquartered in Vermont. Rural counties heavy in agricultural employment, especially in Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa, also boast a considerable senior labor participation rate. Though the jobs are often labor-intensive, agricultural professions maintain

Where are seniors less likely to keep working? Senior labor force participation in 2017 was less than 12% in nearly 14% of counties with at least 6,000 residents. Kentucky, Michigan, Georgia, Alabama, Florida and West Virginia collectively accounted for more than 50% of those bottom-ranking counties in terms of senior labor participation. some of the highest median ages in the country, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. That’s due in part to much of U.S. agriculture being concentrated in family farms, the Department of Agriculture says. People can continue living and working on these operations well into their “retirement” years by

scaling things down and renting land to other farmers. At the other end of the spectrum, Chen notes, manufacturingheavy areas within the Rust Belt and in states including Alabama and Georgia are among those with the lowest senior labor participation. Manufacturing payrolls have plummeted amid automation and globalization challenges. Labor-intensive jobs that are prominent in those areas often preclude folks from working later into life, and the types of white-collar jobs that are more prevalent in larger cities are in shorter supply. “The thinking as to why highly educated people tend to work longer is that they may enjoy better health. They may enjoy better working conditions,” says Jen Schramm, a strategic policy adviser for the AARP Public Policy Institute. “They are likely to be paid more, so that’s more of an incentive to keep working.” ANDREW SOERGEL (FOR THE ASSOCIATED PRESS)

CULTURE Seniors in major metropolitan areas, especially in the Northeast and around Washington, D.C., are more likely to continue working past age 65 than those in other areas of the country, according to an analysis of Census data by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. “Those are the areas where all of the jobs are, really,” says Anqi Chen, assistant director for savings research at Boston College’s Center for Retirement Research. “The coastal areas recovered well from the recession, while other areas have not.” But it’s also the types of jobs in those areas — government, finance, law and academia — that keep seniors working longer, analysts say. Older workers can be a boon to regional economies, increasing tax revenues, stimulating growth with more consumer spending and providing additional talent and expertise at a time of low unemployment, says Paul Irving, chairman of the Milken Institute Center for the Future of Aging. Among counties with at least 6,000 residents, about 12% have at least 21% of their seniors working or actively looking for jobs, according to an analysis of the Census’ 2017 American Community Survey report. Of that group, nearly 25% are located within the Northeast or in Maryland or Virginia. And nearly 15% are within 70 miles of New York, Boston, Philadelphia or Washington, D.C. Two Washington suburbs, Falls Church and Alexandria, are among the nation’s leaders in terms of senior labor force participation, with rates of nearly 37% and nearly 30%, respectively. This area is also home to one of the fastest-growing senior labor

HEALTH Dozing off to late-night TV or sleeping with other lights on may mix up your metabolism and lead to weight gain and even obesity, provocative but preliminary U.S. research suggests. The National Institutes of Health study published Monday isn’t proof, but it bolsters evidence suggesting that too much exposure to light at night could pose health risks. “Evolutionarily, we are supposed to be sleeping at night, in a dark place,” lead author Dale Sandler said. “It’s much more important than people realize for a whole variety of health reasons.” Daily exposure to light and darkness helps maintain our 24-hour body clock, which regulates metabolism, sleeppromoting hormones, blood pressure and other bodily functions. Mounting research suggests disrupting that typical sleep-wake cycle may increase risks for high blood pressure, diabetes, depression and obesity. The researchers analyzed data on nearly 44,000 U.S. women enrolled in an ongoing study. Women who reported sleeping in a room with a TV on or a light were more likely to gain at least 11 pounds over about five years than those who slept in darkness. They were also about 30% more likely to become obese. Sandler said the analysis accounted for other variables that could have led to weight gain, such as diet, physical activity and sleep duration. Mali attack kills at least 95 Assailants not identified in overnight raid on ethnic Dogon people SOBAME DA, MALI At least 95 people were killed in central Mali when gunmen stormed a village overnight, carrying out an especially bloody attack in the West African nation, which has been gripped by surging extremist violence and ethnic tensions. Nineteen other villagers were missing, the Malian government said Monday, as authorities

continued to search for bodies. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the massacre in Sobame Da, a rural community populated mostly by people of the Dogon ethnic group. The Malian government blamed “armed men, suspected of being terrorists,” who it said “launched a murderous assault on this peaceful village.” The assailants also torched dwellings and killed livestock. The latest violence follows a March ambush that killed more than 150 Fulani people in the same region, stoking concerns

that the ambush was motivated by revenge. Fighting has skyrocketed in recent years between the two ethnic groups, who have a long history of disputes. The Dogon people, whose roots as farmers in the area span centuries, have clashed over land with the majority-Muslim Fulani herders. Islamist militants pouring into the country have aggravated the problem, experts say, by sowing unrest, spiking paranoia and making it easier for people to arm themselves. DANIELLE PAQUETTE

The California National Guard has announced the appointment of the first woman to lead a U.S. Army infantry division. Brig. Gen. Laura Yeager will take command of the 40th Infantry Division on June 29 at Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos, Calif. Yeager currently commands Joint Task Force North, U.S. Northern Command at Fort Bliss, Texas. Yeager deployed to Iraq in 2011 as deputy commander of the Cal Guard’s 40th Combat Aviation Brigade, then served as a brigade commander. She was commissioned in 1986 as a second lieutenant from the Reserve Officer Training Corps at California State University, Long Beach. (AP)

Hong Kong’s leader signaled Monday that her government will push ahead with controversial amendments to extradition laws, despite a massive protest against them that underscored fears about mainland China’s broadening footprint in the semi-autonomous territory. A march against the bill drew hundreds of thousands of people to the streets from Sunday into Monday. While Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam says the legislation will help protect human rights, opponents say it will significantly compromise Hong Kong’s legal independence, long viewed as one of its key distinctions from mainland China. The Supreme Court rejected a challenge to federal regulation of gun silencers Monday, just days after a gunman used one in a shooting rampage that killed 12 people in Virginia. The justices did not comment in turning away appeals from two Kansas men who were convicted of violating federal law regulating silencers. The men argued that the constitutional right “to keep and bear arms” includes silencers. Kansas and seven other states joined in a court filing urging justices to hear the appeals. President Trump’s administration asked the court to stay out of the case and leave the convictions in place. (AP)

Albania’s governing Socialist Party called a no-confidence vote against President Ilir Meta, saying Monday it was unconstitutional for him to cancel upcoming municipal elections. The vote will be held at Thursday’s parliamentary session, a Socialist spokeswoman said. The Socialists need 94 votes to oust Meta, which they don’t have in the 140-seat parliament. Even if they get the numbers, the Constitutional Court makes the final decision. Meta announced Saturday he planned to cancel the June 30 municipal elections. He said he made the decision because he thought they would be “undemocratic.” (AP)

NEW YORK CITY A helicopter crash-landed on the roof of a rain-shrouded midtown Manhattan skyscraper Monday, killing the pilot and briefly triggering memories of 9/11, though it appeared to be an accident. The crash near Times Square shook the 750-foot AXA Equitable building, sparked a fire on the roof and forced office workers to flee on elevators and down stairs, witnesses and officials said. The pilot was believed to be the only one aboard, and there were no other reports of injuries, authorities said. It was not immediately clear what caused the crash, or why the Agusta A109E was flying in a driving downpour with low cloud cover and in the tightly controlled airspace of midtown Manhattan. A flight restriction in effect since President Trump took office bans aircraft from flying below 3,000 feet within a 1-mile radius of Trump Tower, which is less than a half-mile from the crash site. The helicopter went down about 11 minutes after taking off from a heliport along the East River, a little more than a mile away. people around him that there was a fire on the roof. The evacuation was not chaotic, Rodriguez said, but he was rattled because he immediately thought of the Sept. 11 attacks. “It’s scary when something like this happens,” he said. The crash happened shortly before 2 p.m., when clouds obscured the roof of the building. Rescue vehicles swarmed to the scene near Rockefeller Center. “If you’re a New Yorker, you

have a level of PTSD, right, from 9/11. And I remember that morning all too well. So as soon as you hear an aircraft hit a building, I think my mind goes where every New Yorker’s mind goes,” said Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who spoke to reporters at the scene. Videos posted by onlookers showed emergency vehicles in the street, but no obvious damage to the skyscraper. The fire department later tweeted a photo of the helicopter’s wreckage.

Kendall Sawyer, who works for a bank on the building’s seventh floor, felt a shake — “jarring enough to notice” — but workers weren’t sure what it was, she said. Then came an announcement that the situation was being looked into, and a few minutes later, an instruction to evacuate, without explanation, she said. “It was a little bit crazy, a little bit scary” as workers walked down the stairs, she said. The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee said Monday that he has reached a deal with the Justice Department to obtain “key evidence” related to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into whether President Trump obstructed justice. The deal, announced by Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., appears to forestall possible criminal contempt proceedings against Attorney General William Barr, who has been locked in a standoff with Nadler and House Democratic leaders over access to redacted parts of Mueller’s report as well as evidence gathered during his two-year investigation. Nadler, above, said in a statement that the Justice Department would be “opening Robert S. Mueller III’s most important files to us, providing us with key evidence that the Special Counsel used to assess whether the President and others obstructed justice or were engaged in other misconduct.” The deal represents a victory for House Democrats in their quest to focus public attention on Mueller’s report and the alleged presidential abuses of power they say it documents. But it is a limited victory: It moves them no closer to securing testimony from Mueller or other figures, such as former White House counsel Donald McGahn, who could galvanize the country at an open hearing. This U.S. team has retained 12 of 23 players from its 2015 World Cup title-winning squad.

‘Ready, excited, hungry’

U.S. opens its World Cup title defense with a deep field of contenders in its way WORLD CUP The U.S. women’s national soccer team has waited four years to begin defending its World Cup trophy, a period that included a humbling fall at the Olympics, the departure of some and the infusion of others, tactical experiments, a strategic reset and a promising buildup. So what’s a few days more? The 24-team tournament began across France on Friday, but the Americans were forced to wait a little longer. In the final opening match of group play, the United States will take on Thailand today in Reims, 90 miles northeast of Paris. “When the tournament kicks off and you watch the games, the anticipation for your first match grows,” said Jill Ellis, who will attempt to coach the U.S. team to consecutive World Cup titles for the first time in team history. “The players are ready, excited, hungry. We feel prepared.” The United States is expected

to easily clear the first two hurdles — Thailand is ranked No. 34, Chile No. 39 — before encountering stouter resistance in the Group F finale against Sweden. From there, the real tests will begin. If the United States and third-ranked France don’t stumble along the way, they’ll collide in the quarterfinals. “You can’t get beyond the first game because there are so many twists and turns in this plot, you just have to be ready to tack in terms of absorb or examine what is in front of you,” said Ellis, a graduate of Robinson High School in Fairfax and William & Mary. This U.S. team retained 12 of 23 players from the 2015 squad that routed Japan in the World Cup final, 5-2. It is the oldest team in the competition, with an average age of 28.5, and the most experienced: five players have appeared in 10 or more World Cup matches. depth to field two quality squads. Carli Lloyd, hat-trick hero of the 2015 final, and rising star Mallory Pugh are options off the bench. “I feel like we are in peak form and ready to find success for the first time in this tournament as ‘19ers,” Morgan said. The reference to ’19ers comes 20 years after the famed “’99ers,” led by Mia Hamm, Michelle Akers and Julie Foudy, won the program’s second world title. This team will have to navigate a diversifying field of true

contenders (France and secondranked Germany), an emerging European class (Netherlands, Spain and Italy) and perennial threats (Canada, Australia, Japan, Sweden and England). “The gap from top to bottom has continued to close over the years,” defender Kelley O’Hara said, “and this is the tightest it’s ever been.” If the U.S. has a vulnerability, it’s in the back. In the run-up to the tournament, the U.S. conceded a dangerous number of opportunities. They dare opponents to commit players forward and leave themselves exposed to a U.S. counter. Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher has never played in a World Cup or Olympics. Any perceived weaknesses are overshadowed by the power of a program that has raised more trophies than anyone in women’s soccer annals. “This team is united in a way we have never seen it before,” Morgan said. Win or lose, Rask looks like an MVP Bruins goalie has been best player on the ice all through postseason STANLEY CUP FINAL Asked about his goalie’s 12 power play saves during Boston’s 5-1 win in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final, Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy could only describe Tuukka Rask one way. “He’s our best player,” McAvoy

said Monday. “He has been all playoffs and all regular season.” Rask has been arguably the best player on the ice for either team this postseason with his .938 save percentage and 1.93 goals-against average in 23 games. On Sunday night, he weathered an early St. Louis push and four penalty kills in the first two periods to maintain the Bruins’ 1-0 lead going into the third, when his teammates

Anaheim goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere in 2003; it has only happened five times since the award was created in 1965. “Unless he gives up eight goals in Game 7 and completely falls apart, to me he is the Conn Smythe winner with the way that he’s played,” said NBC Sports analyst and former goaltender Brian Boucher. “[In the past] it’s been a case of, ‘He’s good, but …’ ” Boucher said. “And I think the ‘but’ has been what most people have focused on here over the last several years. I think right now, what he’s done and showed me in the playoffs these last two months, the ‘but’ is erased for me.” ISABELLE KHURSHUDYAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

MLB David Ortiz’s outsized personality, as much his prowess at the plate, made him one of the most popular players ever to emerge out of the Dominican Republic, or to wear a Red Sox uniform. As Ortiz, wounded by an assailant’s bullet in a shocking incident late Sunday night in Santo Domingo, prepared to be flown from his native country to the city where his legend was built, fans and well-wishers in both places

hoped for the best for the beloved, 43-year-old known as Big Papi. Ortiz was shot in the back at close range around 8:50 p.m. Sunday, in an ambush-style attack, as he sat at a streetside table at a restaurant. Rushed to a nearby clinic, he reportedly had surgery to remove his gall bladder and parts of his intestine; doctors also reported damage to his liver. By Monday afternoon, Ortiz was in good enough condition that he could fly to Boston on a private plane sent by the Red Sox, for whom he still works as a special assistant. fit NUTRITION The words we use matter. Our language choices have the power to shape our attitudes and behaviors over time — which is why many nutrition professionals cringe at much of the conversation around food and health today. Common words and phrases can set us up for unhealthy approaches to food. I reached out to several dietitians to identify the most common offenders and asked them how to reframe that language for a healthier perspective.

TUESDAY | 06.11.2019 | EXPRESS | 19

DS R O W MATTER

Clean eating The notion of clean eating is an offshoot of the good/bad food concept that marketers adore, to the dismay of many dietitians.

is not merely a simplistic misrepresentation. As with calling foods good or bad, it can ultimately be unhealthy, fostering overly restrictive eating and unwarranted self-judgment around food.

Guilty pleasure

WHEN

IT

Good/bad food Almost every dietitian I surveyed ranked the categorization of food as “good” or “bad” high on their cringe list. It is the root of unhealthy food-speak. Pinning a set value to a particular food shifts focus from the big picture: the overall eating patterns that really affect well-being. Even foods with a less-thanideal nutritional breakdown can have benefits. “Pizza is often demonized as ‘bad’ because it is high in fat, high in refined carbohydrates and easy to overindulge [on],” says Chris Mohr, co-founder of the nutrition consultation company Mohr Results. “But if that pizza ... brought friends together, encouraged conversation, laughing and connection, the otherwise ‘bad’ food becomes nurturing for your soul. Food inherently is not good or bad.” The good/bad paradigm can also lead to extreme, moralistic attitudes about food. As Deanna Wolfe, co-founder of HealthyBody Nutrition, says, “People use ‘good’ or ‘bad’ to describe food as if you are ‘good’ or ‘bad’ for eating them. ... You are not good for eating kale and bad for eating ice cream.”

HEALTH ADVICE

COMES

TO

Certain food terms should be phased out of your vocabulary

“The original [clean eating] philosophy appears to be one I think we could all get on board with: eating food as close to its original state as possible, in the most nutritious form possible — aka minimally processed.

But what was once a sense of awareness about food seems to have spiraled into a diet-culturedriven system,” explains Jaclyn London, nutrition director at Good Housekeeping. Declaring foods clean or dirty

SoulCycle’s sixth D.C.-area location opens Friday in Market Common Clarendon

All these concepts set people up for guilt. I’ll bet you’ve been there: You declare you are going to “be good” or “eat clean” and beat yourself up at the slightest deviation from what you’ve decided is the perfect diet. No wonder the term “guilty pleasure” makes dietitians wince. “Eating is not cheating, and guilt should have no role in food choice,” Ward says. “Your diet does not need to be perfect. ... As a dieter in my teens and early 20s, I battled guilt and shame, and I found it to be extremely unproductive.”

Ward off summer blisters

People are generally better off eating fewer foods made of refined flour and sugar. Somewhere along the way, “carb” became synonymous with unhealthy. But many healthful foods are rich in carbohydrates. “I’m asked if fruit is bad because it’s a ‘carb’ at least once per week,” says Marjorie Nolan Cohn, spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “The fact that people who are trying to do right by their heath actually question if fruit is bad for them is a window into how distorted our society’s view of food is.” Wendy Lopez, co-founder of the online platform Food Heaven Made Easy, cringes when she hears people say carbs are bad for you. “People think they’re eating healthier by cutting down on carbohydrates,” she says. “However, carbohydrates are in so many nutritious and tasty foods. ... Carbohydrates provide our bodies with fuel, nutrition and satisfaction.”

The best way to prevent blisters is to minimize rubbing or irritation caused by footwear in any way you can. Firmly tie laces to prevent feet from slipping. Lessen blister-promoting sweat by using talcum powder, and buy wicking socks. Cover zones prone to chafing with paper surgical tape. According to a 2016 study in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, this can reduce the occurrence of blisters by 40%. Or you could add inserts or insoles to your shoes. It also helps to keep your feet moisturized and supple; softer skin bends more to friction than dry, callused feet. If your toes rub together in closed shoes, try preventive toe sleeves or toe socks. Shoe choice matters tremendously, too. Running shoes or hiking boots “should pretty much feel wonderful in the store, like a breath of fresh air,” says podiatrist Sheldon Laps.

Q. I have a friend with an inflated idea of his attractiveness. He is constantly criticizing average-looking people on dating sites while getting angry that the most attractive people won’t respond to him. Since I am a woman, I don’t want to get into a conversation about this because he will get defensive and say something hurtful about my looks. But I want him to have a reality check. His go-to defense in a conversation about how he sabotages himself will likely involve criticizing your looks? Wow. This sounds less like the typical “I might think I’m hotter than I am — I deserve a gentle reality check” and more like a situation where someone’s narcissism is laced with cruelty. I would focus on that, more so than his objective ranking as a Handsome-or-Not Man. Tell

Rap pioneer Bushwick Bill dies at age 52

“Pose” actors, from left, Ryan Jamaal Swain, Mj Rodriguez and Indya Moore sure know how to give a look.

Season 2 of FX’s ‘Pose’ hits its mark with style

The series has found its groove balancing fabulosity and depth

TV REVIEW FX’s “Pose” returns tonight with a resolute confidence in both its big glimmer and its basic grit. It hasn’t gone out and gotten a major makeover for Season 2, but it has applied some necessary tweaks. Ryan Murphy (who created “Pose” with Brad Falchuk and Steven Canals) very seriously stocked the show with transgender writers, producers and actors — partly to prove to the industry that it can be done, but also to ensure quality in shipping and handling. In a New Yorker interview, he essentially forbade anyone from calling the show

“campy,” challenging viewers to look past a lot of fabulosity and see something deeper instead. Now that both show and audience have found a common groove, it’s safe to say that “Pose” excels as a fun piece of corrective history, taking place in a quasiaccurate, reimagined New York at a certain less-gentrified time (this season picks up in the spring of 1990). The show focuses on transgender and minority rights amid a gay rights movement that often marginalized its nonwhite, non-yuppie nonconformists. So much is left out of the stories about that period that it makes sense to go back and fill in with whatever’s available — memory, fact, imagination and desire. The show reunites us with Blanca Evangelista (Mj Rodriguez), the mother of House

Evangelista, the ruling troupe of performers in the ballroom scene, a subculture of competitive “realness,” where transgender black and Latina women preen before a panel of judges, emceed by the ferociously catty Pray Tell (Billy Porter, the show’s standout). As they strike their poses, the radio and MTV answer ominously with Madonna’s smash “Vogue,” which has both an energizing and unnerving effect on their previously private realm. Dedicated to magnifying its easiest metaphors, “Pose” chooses a parallel between “Vogue” fever and the AIDS plague. The first hints at a profound change ahead for ballroom culture — and the second presents itself in a steady stream of funerals for friends.

Bushwick Bill, the oneeyed rapper who with the Geto Boys helped put the South’s stamp on rap with hits like “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” and “Six Feet Deep,” died Sunday at age 52, according to his publicist. His business manager, Pete Marrero, said the rapper was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February. The Houston-based Geto Boys were a trio consisting of Bushwick Bill, Scarface and Willie D that launched in the late 1980s. Their gritty verses made them platinum sensations and showed that rap had strength outside the strongholds of New York, where it got its start, and Los Angeles. (AP)

‘Hadestown’ has heavenly night at Tonys

“Hadestown,” the brooding musical about the underworld, won eight Tony Awards on Sunday, including best new musical. Rachel Chavkin, the show’s director, became only the 10th woman to win a best director Tony. Playwright Jez Butterworth’s “The Ferryman,” meanwhile, was crowned best play, and Bryan Cranston, Elaine May, Santino Fontana and Stephanie J. Block triumphed in the four lead acting categories. Kate Mulgrew’s memoir carries a heavy heart BOOK REVIEW You might know Kate Mulgrew as Galina “Red” Reznikov on “Orange Is the New Black” or Capt. Kathryn Janeway on “Star Trek: Voyager.” For all her talent as an actor, however, Mulgrew’s true calling may be as a writer. In “How to Forget,” her memoir released May 21, Mulgrew shares a moving personal story. It’s full of love and heartbreak — of affairs and deaths and lives undone — as melodramatic at times as “Ryan’s Hope,” the soap opera Mulgrew once starred in. That the book is autobiography makes its shocking details all the more powerful. Framed around the decline and deaths of Mulgrew’s parents over the course of two years, the memoir has a sorrowful heart. But it’s rarely depressing. Told in two parts — one for each parent — “How to Forget” is, never mind its title, about remembering. As her parents face the end of their lives, Mulgrew takes us back to their beginnings. In a commanding voice, she regales us with sharply told tales of family life on Derby Grange, a 40-acre estate in Dubuque, Iowa. Mulgrew’s flair for drama might lead some readers to wonder about her precise recall of conversations that happened years ago, but it makes for a captivating reading experience. You’ll never forget Derby Grange and the happy and heartbroken family that lived there. NORA KRUG (TWP)
