THE DISTRICT A day intended to be one of celebration and jubilance for D.C.’s gay community took on a more somber tone Sunday as participants reacted to reports that the gunman who killed at least 50 people at an Orlando gay nightclub in an Islamic State-inspired attack may have targeted them because of their sexual orientation.

Sunday’s Capital Pride Festival, which attracted hundreds of thousands of people, became a symbol for participants who said it both represented the recent triumphs of the LGBT community and also underscored the work that remains. There is still hatred. There is still reason to fear.

Even in a moment of celebration.

“It’s a sad day for all of us and a powerful reminder that there’s still a lot of hatred in the world,” said David Mariner, executive director of the DC Center for the LGBT Community. “Much work remains all around the world.

And much work remains right here in the District of Columbia.”

There was no indication that turnout was any lower than it would have otherwise been.

“People are not staying away; they are actually coming down here in the show of solidarity,” said Bernie Delia, Capital Pride Alliance board president. He added: “There’s a duality of emotions going on. WVIR-TV reports that Marilyn Mullins received a card from the Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville almost a month and a half after her three-day stay there. The card, which was addressed to Mullins’ family, said her family was in the hospital’s thoughts after her death. The only problem is that Mullins is still alive. THE DISTRICT Democrats heading to the polls Tuesday for the District’s presidential primary will participate in an odd ritual: They’ll vote, but the results won’t matter.

The party’s intensely fought battle between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton is over — decided last week, when Clinton racked up enough victories across the country to secure her party’s nomination.

The city’s inconsequential status is largely a function of its dead-last place on the primary calendar, something Mayor Muriel Bowser says she wants to change for future presidential contests.

But that feeling of futility and sense of invisibility go beyond presidential primaries: They underscore the civic experience in the District, residents say.

Despite the fact that more people live in D.C. than in Vermont or Wyoming, the city has no voting representation on Capitol Hill.

“D.C. is the last colony, as I like to say. We’re always forgotten. We’ve had taxation without representation for so long — this election is just another example,” said Denise Woodson, a 45-yearold social worker who added that she had to dig deep to summon the will to participate in early voting last week after it was clear Clinton had already won.

Despite residents who enthusiastically sport “I Voted!” stickers after leaving the polls, some say the exercise can feel empty.

Voters will be able to decide a handful of D.C. Council races Tuesday, and those results do count. But during one of the most heated presidential contests in years, it feels like small consolation.

“D.C. deserves better,” said Martin Ayaba, a native of

For months, residents of the nation’s capital waited patiently as the presidential primary contests rolled along, drawing national attention to the concerns of faraway voters.

With each passing state, every uptick in the delegate count, the despairing reality for D.C. Democrats again set in.

On Tuesday — for the ninth time in 11 presidential contests — the party’s voters will cast ballots after the presumptive Democratic nominee has been determined.

That means almost no say for the Americans who will deal most directly with the next president, from motorcades that snarl traffic to administration policies that alter the character of the city.

“It really should be the other way around,” said Jamison Gillespie, 28, a defense contractor

“Why would you even vote at this point? … All the motivation has been stripped away.”

D.C. Republicans held their primary in March, handing a victory to Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, although it didn’t help much — he dropped out of the GOP race days later.

But in a city where 75 percent of

registered voters are Democrats, most have been passively watching presidential politics.

Indeed, it’s Democrats’ dominance of D.C. during the past 50 years that is partly to blame. Because the city is overwhelmingly blue, the Democratic primary has become the de facto election. To lengthen the campaign season for local contests, the D.C. Council has tried to stretch out the party’s primary season, often selecting one of the last slots available on national party calendars in presidential years.

And that has kept D.C. largely off the radar during primary contests since 1961, when Congress granted residents of the capital the right to vote for president.

The city’s residents were the last in the country to win that right.

Council member Jack Evans seems open to changing the primary. “Being dead last is just a terrible idea,” he said.

In the most-watched local race, former mayor Vincent Gray, above, is seeking to return to the D.C. Council, challenging incumbent Yvette Alexander in his home ward. Alexander is considered vulnerable. In the 2012 primary, she won with just 42 percent of the vote.

Other races At-large Council member Vincent Orange faces two challengers this year. In Ward 8, Council member LaRuby May, who succeeded the late Marion Barry, faces a challenge from Trayon White, who narrowly lost to her after Barry’s death.

New technology D.C. will use new voting machines that can transmit results directly to the city elections board’s downtown offices. Elections officials hope that will mean results will be available much faster than in the past, when poll workers had to hand-deliver the numbers and voters waited for hours to learn the results.

Brown declines to say if he repaid 2014 campaign loan

Virginia Tech’s first black Greek organization has been banned from campus for 10 years after a pledge says he was blindfolded and beaten over several days earlier this year.

The Roanoke Times reports that the school’s Theta Iota chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity was barred for abusive conduct and hazing. In an executive order from the fraternity recommending the chapter disband, national fraternity investigators say that pledges were blindfolded and attacked for several nights in January while being quizzed about fraternity history. One pledge told the national fraternity he was hospitalized and withdrew from school. (AP)

A federal appeals court has temporarily suspended a lower court ruling that cast doubt on the constitutionality of a key provision of D.C.’s gun-control law. A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit said last week the court would move quickly to review the law, which requires residents to show “good reason” to obtain a license to carry a firearm on the streets of the nation’s capital.

The D.C. law is similar to those in Maryland and New York that federal appeals courts have said are constitutional. On Thursday, a federal appeals court upheld a similar policy in San Diego. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown has declined to say whether he met a deadline to pay back $120,000 of a loan for his failed run for governor. The Baltimore Sun reports that Brown said Friday that he remains committed to fulfilling his obligations. The $120,000 due June 1 was the largest installment his campaign owed the Laborers Political League Education Fund under a payment plan. Brown borrowed $500,000 for the 2014 bid. He also loaned his congressional campaign $400,000 in personal funds for his successful run for the Democratic nomination for Maryland’s 4th Congressional District. (AP)

PALO ALTO, CALIF. Stanford University graduating students and women’s rights advocates used the school’s commencement ceremony to again express their anger over the six-month jail sentence given to a former student for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman.

A handful of students demonstrated Sunday during “Wacky Walk,” a rambunctious, slowmoving stroll by graduating students dressed in zany costumes that precedes the official graduation events.

One person held a sign that declared, “Stanford protects rapists.” Another graduate’s sign was a message to the victim: “You are a warrior.”

Organizers said they wanted to show solidarity with the woman sexually assaulted on campus last year by former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner.

“It’s very important to amplify the voice of survivors,” said Brianne Huntsman, a protest organizer.

The victim’s emotional statement to the court about how the assault devastated her life was widely shared online, attracting national attention to the case.

More than one-third of the world’s population can no longer see the Milky Way because of man-made lights. Among those missing out on aweinspiring Milky Way views: nearly 80 percent of North Americans and 60 percent of Europeans. Tiny Singapore has it the worst.

Its entire population is out of luck. These are the findings of a new global atlas of light pollution, published Friday in the journal Science Advances.

More than four-fifths of earthlings now live beneath skies polluted by artificial light, which blocks out the Milky Way for more than a third of them, according to the research.

“It’s a big part of our connection to the cosmos — and it’s been lost,” coauthor Christopher Elvidge said in a statement. (AP)

ORLANDO, FLA. The ex-wife of the 29-year-old man who is believed to have killed 50 people in an Orlando nightclub early Sunday said that he was violent and mentally unstable and beat her repeatedly while they were married.

The ex-wife said she met Omar Mateen online about eight years ago and decided to move to Florida. The two married in March 2009.

At first, the marriage was normal, she said, but then he became abusive.

“He was not a stable person,” said the ex-wife, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because she feared for her safety in the wake of the mass shooting.

“He beat me. He would just come home and start beating me up because the laundry wasn’t finished or something like that.”

Mateen’s ex-wife said his family was from Afghanistan, but her ex-husband was born in New York. His family later moved to Florida. In 2007, Mateen graduated with an associate of science degree from Indian River State College.

“He seemed like a normal human being,” she said, adding that when they were married he wasn’t very religious. She said in the few months they were married he gave no signs of having fallen under the sway of radical Islam. She said he owned a small-caliber handgun.

ORLANDO, FLA. The gunman who opened fire inside a crowded Orlando nightclub early Sunday morning, launching a rampage that killed 50 people and injured 53 others in the deadliest shooting spree in the country’s history, had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, according to U.S. law enforcement officials.

In a rampage that President Obama said the FBI was investigating as an act of terrorism, the gunman fired a barrage of bullets inside Pulse, a popular gay bar and dance club, forcing people to drop to the floor and rush out through a back entrance during the club’s “Latin night.”

After the first round of gunshots, police said the shooter held hostages for about three hours until officers stormed inside to rescue people and killed him in a shootout, although many details remained unclear.

Witnesses and others said the shooting left a gruesome scene.

One doctor at a nearby hospital said that victims came in with their bodies riddled with gunshots, while others “had their calves and forearms blown off.”

While many waited for much of Sunday for information on whether loved ones were among the dead, concerns reverberated outward of broader dangers posed to the LGBT community.

“We know enough to say that this was an act of terror and an act of hate,” Obama said during remarks at the White House.

“And as Americans, we are united in grief, in outrage and in resolve to defend our people.”

One of 53 people wounded in a shooting rampage is carried to an ambulance early Sunday in Orlando, Fla.

Sunday identifying himself and declared allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State, according to U.S. law enforcement officials who asked not to be identified in discuss the ongoing investigation.

Mateen, whose family is from Afghanistan, also cited the 2013 bombing of the Boston Marathon during that call. It was unclear if he made the call before or during the attack.

Details of Mateen’s background began to emerge slowly Sunday. Much like Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the older of the two brothers who carried out the Boston attack, Mateen had been the focus of an FBI investigation.

Ron Hopper of the FBI said that Mateen had twice been investigated by the bureau and that in both cases, he was interviewed before the probes were concluded.

Mateen had been a security guard in Fort Pierce, Fla. In 2013, Hopper said, agents investigated Mateen after he made “inflammatory comments

to co-workers alleging possible ties to terrorists.” Mateen was interviewed twice and, when investigators were unable to verify the details of his comments, the FBI closed the probe.

He was investigated again in 2014 by the FBI. This time, they looked into potential ties

connecting Mateen to Moner Mohammad Abusalha, the first American to carry out a suicide attack in Syria. Like Mateen, Abusalha lived in Fort Pierce.

“We determined that contact was minimal and did not constitute a substantive relationship or a threat at that time,” Hopper said.

Mateen’s pledge on the 911 call echoes what happened after the attack in San Bernardino, Calif., in December. Just after a husband and wife killed 14 people in an attack there, one of the shooters went on Facebook and pledged her allegiance to the emir of the Islamic State. Officials said the posting was made on behalf of both attackers.

A Florida LGBT advocacy group has already raised more than $700,000 for the victims of Sunday’s Orlando nightclub shooting. More than 18,000 people had donated to Equality Florida’s GoFundMe page as of early Sunday evening. According to the fundraising page, funds will go directly to victims and their families, and Equality Florida will work with other local organizations to distribute the funds. One man, who called himself Jeffree Star on the page, donated $20,000 and left a simple message: “Sending love. Praying for everyone affected in this horrible tragedy.” (TWP)

A former Afghan official says the father of Omar Mateen, the Orlando gunman, is a native of Afghanistan who appears on a television program known for “its anti-U.S. tirades” and “pro-Taliban” remarks.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said Seddique Mateen hosted the anti-Pakistan “Durand Jirga Show” in the Dari language on a channel called Payam-e-Afghan, which broadcasts from California.

The elder Mateen also campaigned in the U.S. for current Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, who appeared on his program in 2014.

It’s that same play-on-theedge mentality that will force him to miss Game 5 of the NBA Finals tonight (9, ABC) in Oakland, Calif.

The NBA announced Sunday that Green had been assessed a level-one flagrant foul for swiping at LeBron James’ groin in the fourth quarter of Game 4.

Because Green had already received three flagrant foul points this postseason, this pushed him

to four points, resulting in an automatic one-game suspension.

Green will lose one game check — roughly $140,000.

The Warriors lead the series 3-1 over the Cavaliers and could clinch the title tonight. Game 6, if necessary, would be in Cleveland.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr did not say who would replace Green in the lineup. Andre Iguodala, the MVP of the NBA Finals a year ago, has occasionally started in place of forward Harrison Barnes, so he is a possibility.

The NBA under its current commissioner, Adam Silver, has tried to give its players more latitude than it did under former commissioner David Stern.

For these professionals, an internship provides a start to a new career

INTERNSHIPS Aubrey Whitehead isn’t your typical intern. He’s 42, served nine years of active duty in the military and recently resigned from a GS-15 position at the Department of State to focus on getting his doctorate.

Now he’s interning in the University Career Services office at George Mason University (careers.gmu.edu) and preparing to teach an undergrad class there in the fall.

“You’ve got to jump all in,” he says.

Like Whitehead, plenty of people don’t fit the traditional mold of a high school or college intern getting their professional feet wet for the first time. For them, the experience is just as crucial — and they’re a good “get” for companies, too.

The veteran Older interns bring decades of skills to bear, even if from a different field. Robert DeNiro played one of these later-in-life career transitioners in 2015’s “The Intern.”

At his internship — required as part of his Ph.D program in educational psychology at GMU — Whitehead, a former headhunter, helps students in the career services office prepare résumés, interview, find internships and

negotiate salaries. In his studies, Whitehead is interested in what factors contribute to college students’ interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) majors and careers.

“This internship allows me to talk to Mason students and get a better sense of some of those factors,” he says.

It’s an invaluable experience, he says, but the transition from well-paid employee to student and intern was an adjustment for him and his family.

“We made sacrifices so I could do this,” he says.

Carol Fishman Cohen, CEO of iRelaunch (irelaunch.com), a Boston-based return-to-work network, says if concerns about age or “overqualification” come up when seeking internships, candidates should emphasize that they sought the position because they can deliver results even at lower levels of seniority, and be able to better manage life outside of work with a less demanding position.

“Some hiring managers will not be receptive to this, but others will not have thought about it from that perspective,” she says.

The new-leafer After nearly a decade of cleaning teeth, dental hygienist Brittany Holt, 30, was ready for a change.

“My goal [for] after I became certified as an assistant was to attend hygiene school and then dental school,” she says. “After a

After going back to school for her undergraduate degree in psychology at the University of Maryland University College (umuc.edu), Holt decided to transition to a career in human resources. Her internships have helped her get a better sense of what she wants her future job to look like. Her first internship with Aflac last year wasn’t a good fit, but her new internship in human resources at the

Department of Health and Human Services is looking more promising.

“It helped me figure out where exactly in the field I wanted to work, by the process of elimination,” she says. “You don’t have to get somewhere and sign on to a job and sign on to a salary and waste the organization’s resources.”

The do-gooder No one likes to work for free, but it’s easier for a cause you believe in. Last spring, Shelby Giles, 32, was working full-time in federal consulting while providing pro bono consulting services to a nonprofit as part of a course in Georgetown University’s public relations and corporate communications master’s program (bit.ly/1tq03IT).

Thirty-two states, including Virginia and Delaware, have a funding formula or policy that allocates money to public colleges and universities based on measures such as course completion, time to degree or the number of low-income and minority graduates.

But a new report from the Century Foundation argues that financial incentives are reinforcing disparities within public higher education. “We’ve got it all backwards to tell colleges to perform first, without actually addressing their capacity constraints,” says author Nicholas Hillman, an assistant professor of education at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

According to the report, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Indiana failed to produce more graduates after adopting a performance-based funding model.

Having a full-time job at the same time gave her the financial freedom to take on those pro bono services, Giles notes.

She has since left her old job to join Vanguard Communications, a social impact PR firm in DC. The work experience gives students a “safe space” to explore this career path, says John Trybus, deputy director of Georgetown’s Center for Social Impact Communication, while the nonprofits get free labor.

“These organizations literally get the equivalent of $50,000 of pro bono services,” he says.

“Many of these organizations don’t have the finance or staff to do that.”

After taking a three-year break to be home with her two small children, followed by six years of working at a “virtual law firm” startup, Emily Terrell, 38, was looking to break into the large law firm world again.

“Looking at my résumé, I have all this great experience, but it’s old,” she says.

Participating firms offer six- to 12-month paid fellowships that can lead to full-time employment if the match is a good fit. The women also receive career-development support, including coaching and online continuing education.

“When my children were tiny, I feel really lucky that I had the luxury to be with them during that time,” says Terrell, who is now completing a 12-month fellowship in patent litigation at the D.C. office of the law firm Cooley.

Cohen says many of the people who use the iRelaunch service are women who have taken a career break to care for children or family (men take career breaks for this reason, too). If companies ask about long gaps in your résumé, she recommends shifting attention back to prior relevant work experience.

“Acknowledge that you took the career break, don’t apologize, and then move on to why you are the best person for the role,” she says.

As part of an initiative with the Society of Women Engineers, seven companies are piloting reentry internship programs for engineers in 2016, Cohen notes.

The first program started in the D.C. area at Booz Allen Hamilton this month.

Tea specialist Christian Eck describes afternoon tea service at the Park Hyatt Washington’s Tea Table as “sort of a mix between high tea and low tea.”

What he does Christian Eck’s job is to help busy Washingtonians sit down and enjoy a cup of tea. When he’s not running special events at the Park Hyatt Washington, Eck oversees the Tea Table, a weekend afternoon tea service,

which provides a buffet of savory and sweet treats and a wide array of teas during the spring, fall and winter. He also manages the tea’s storage at the Tea Cellar, which holds 37 different types of tea, including a pu-erh from the 1940s, a type of tea that is fermented and aged. “[The Tea Table] is sort of a mix between high tea and low tea; it’s not a traditional either/ or,” Eck says. “It’s a low tea in that you’re eating a substantial meal and it’s a high tea because it’s more of a mingling afternoon

session as well.”

Eck works with the chefs at the Park Hyatt to find teas to pair with the treats for the Tea Table. “If I’m looking at a dessert that’s got a lot of dairy in it, then dairy isn’t too bitter,” he says. “So maybe I’ll try to find a tea that’s got some bitter to it.

Or, vice versa, if I have someone who’s eating breakfast or eating something more savory, then I look for a tea that’s got some acidity to it.”

Come teatime, he keeps track of what’s brewing and monitors the service, including working with customers to suggest new teas and educating them.

At other times, he scouts out new teas to include in the Park Hyatt’s collection. The teas have been gleaned from one exotic food provider in the past, but now Eck is looking to explore new sources, including recently tasting some single-estate teas from Taiwan. “I’m constantly looking for new ideas to change the menu up or ways to get new items or tea in,” Eck says.

How he got the job Among his other duties at the Park Hyatt, Eck is also a

professional sommelier. Around five years ago, as he was learning more about wine, he says he began to wonder, “I care so much about the wine I drink; why don’t I care so much about everything else?” He taught himself about different tea varieties and styles as he continued to learn about wine. “The aromas, the scents, the taste profile, the balance and all that, the acidity — it’s all very similar across the two,” he says.

After he got a post as a sommelier at the Park Hyatt, he noticed that the existing tea program didn’t have someone running it. “I was able to step in with the grace of my boss at the time,” Eck says. “And he said, ‘Take it over. Run with it.’ And so it just kind of fell in my lap. And I was really able to take it in the direction that I thought it should go.”

An enthusiasm for tea is a clear requisite for the role. Eck says it’s always a good day when new tea comes in: “Tasting! That’s probably the No. 1 [favorite] thing of mine to do.”

Teatime is social, after all, and being comfortable while assisting and serving others is key. Eck works with guests at the Park Hyatt to expand their tea horizons. “There’s a certain sense of joy that comes with providing someone with something they’ve never had before and then they ask me where they can get it,” he says. “It’s such a great feeling.”

Eck says tea is growing in popularity. “You know, I think that the role of tea is shifting, especially with millennials,” he says. “When Starbucks bought [Teavana],

Eck says that the level of stress can vary, some days being very calm and others requiring a lot of energy, like during packed days at the Tea Table. Still, it’s all worth it. “It’s fun. It’s creative.

It’s enjoyable,” he says.

How you can get the job

For those interested in learning about tea, Eck suggests exploring Capital Teas, which has six shops in the area. “You can really see just about every style of tea that’s produced in the world,” he says. “You can go in, you can smell them, you can see them.

And one of the things that I love is that you can buy them in such small amounts that you can go in and every time you go you could buy a different tea, and you can buy just enough of it to get

you say through a week or two, before moving on to a different tea.” There are also educational institutions that offer tea sommelier certifications.

Eck also encourages tea enthusiasts to learn the distinctions between geographies and styles within the larger groupings.

“You’ve had a Chinese green?

Maybe now you try a Japanese green, just to try to see the little intricacies that are within each

family. That can really increase your palate and your knowledge,” he says.

While Eck’s job is a role he created for himself, he sees potential for other tea-related professions.

“There’s only one tea plantation in the United States,” he says.

“That field is ripe with opportunity. If someone would like to grow their own American teas, they should go out and try now.”

Outbox in Silver Spring joins a growing effort to take work al fresco WORKPLACES Office space design is undergoing a period of experimentation, leading to ideas such as the adoption of open office design, co-working spaces and environmentally friendly materials.

Now there’s a local experiment of another idea: outdoor offices.

The Peterson Companies development firm last week opened a 20seat outdoor space on Ellsworth Drive in downtown Silver Spring featuring desks, chairs, electrical

outlets and wireless internet service, aimed at coaxing employees typically chained to their desks or cubicles to go outside.

Called Outbox, the space was designed by applied technology students from Montgomery College and is open to the public weekdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through October. Think of it as a pop-up office.

“We anticipate all types of individuals using the space, including techies, telecommuters, executives, entrepreneurs and artists,” said Dan Figueroa of Peterson Companies, which developed much of downtown Silver Spring as well as National Harbor.

‘BrainDead’ politicians as metaphor TELEVISION CBS wanted a smart show about Capitol Hill, so the network turned to the creators of the political drama “The Good Wife,” Robert and Michelle King.

“It was right around the budget crisis, the government shutdown. There was an element of insanity out there,” says Robert.

Naturally, the married couple thought of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.”

Politicians, the thinking went, often behaved like aliens, as if their bodies had been invaded by some outside force and they were not responsible for their actions, which often defied precedent or logic. “BrainDead,” the 13-episode series that resulted, debuts at 10 p.m. today.

Mind you, this was all considered before the current election took a turn to uncharted alien

territory. The presidential race is a backdrop, though the season’s last episode will air in August.

Robert describes it as “the comedy of ‘Men in Black’ mixed with the satire of ‘Network’ and the relationships of ‘The West Wing.’ ” Brain-eating bugs come to Earth via a meteor that lands in Russia, and they travel to America via container ship. In Washington they become devious, powerful and rampant, entering congressmen and their constituents through the ear, eating half the brain and leaving the host ultimately changed.

Essentially, it seems, they’re a metaphor for Washington’s dysfunction.

“The infected actually get smarter and clearer, more focused and more articulate,” says Tony Shalhoub, who plays Sen. Red Wheatus, R-Md., a Baltimore good ol’ boy, his brain among the bugs’ first brunches.

Feel-guilty TV: Stand up and watch ‘Spartan’ There’s feelgood TV — heartwarming stories about lovely lovers and perfect parents and adorable moppets.

There’s guilty-pleasure TV — shows so bad you just can’t keep from watching.

Then there’s feel-guilty TV. That seems the appropriate adjective for “Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge,” the obstacle course race show premiering at 10 p.m. tonight on NBC. Because how can I sit back and enjoy chocolatecovered pretzels while “Spartan” contestants crawl 110 feet through muck beneath a net of barbed wire or climb the mudcovered 25-foot “slip wall”?

Spartan races aren’t something TV made up. “This is a 16-year-old startup,” says Joe De Sena, who co-founded the sport of “grueling long distance races” in 2000. Today, he

says the Olympics is considering Spartan racing.

The beauty of the sport is that anyone can sign up. You just need stamina. And determination. And flexibility. And maybe delusions of grandeur.

To get on the TV series, you also need a backstory. Like the immigrants who have “this big American dream” (shhh, don’t tell Trump) or the man who adopted a special-needs child.

The winning team gets $250,000, which, if you ask me, is not nearly enough for slithering through mud. There will be inevitable tensions, not to mention reality show mantras like “Push through the pain.”

As for those inevitable feelings of guilt, take a tip from De Sana: Instead of lying on the couch, stand up while you watch. Or better yet, try some burpees.

‘The Voice’ singer fatally shot Friday ORLANDO, FLA. Christina Grimmie — a former finalist on NBC’s “The Voice” — was fatally shot after her show at the Plaza Live venue in Orlando on Friday.

The 22-year-old singer’s suspected killer, identified as 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl, came up to Grimmie after the show, when about 120 people were still at the venue, and opened fire.

Shortly after shooting Grimmie, Loibl then shot and killed himself, police said.

Grimmie was taken to a hospital but eventually died.

Loibl was armed with handguns and a hunting knife, authorities said. Nothing in the investigation suggested that the gunman knew the singer personally, police said.

The concert venue has unarmed security guards, who check bags and purses when people enter, Orlando Police Chief John Mina said. Events at the venue have been suspended “until further notice,” according to a post on its Facebook page.

Grimmie, a New Jersey native with more than 3 million subscribers on YouTube, finished in third place during Season 6 of “The Voice.”

Her mentor on the show was Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, who on Saturday wrote on Twitter that he and his wife were “absolutely devastated and heartbroken” by her death.
