Metro returns to its original train odors TRANSPORTATION Call it a win for sensitive-nosed riders. Metro has abandoned plans to install more cucumbermelon-scented air fresheners on the Green Line.

The kerfuffle over a wellmeaning olfactory endeavor came about last month, after Metro announced it had conducted a pilot to try to improve the smell on 6000-series trains by using air fresheners installed in the ventilation system.

Early indications suggested that the air fresheners were working. Metro said that in the three months after the air fresheners were first installed, customer ratings of cleanliness on Green Line trains increased 15 percentage points.

“That did have a pretty nice impact quickly,” Metro’s Chief Performance Officer Andrea Burnside said at the time. “I guess if [the trains] smell good,

Burnside said officials were considering expanding the program to more lines and trains.

But that was … before.

The week after Metro’s announcement late last month, The Washington Post published a story about the pilot program.

The backlash was swift.

“What is Metro thinking?” a reader named Ann wrote in an email after reading the story. “If

I get on a train with air fresheners, then Metro has lost another rider.”

Ann’s concern? Fragrances, perfumes and air fresheners are “cloying” at best, she said.

At worst, artificial scents can hurt people with allergies.

She wasn’t alone in her worries.

“For me, a whiff of many perfumes and air fresheners is enough to trigger a migraine that will last for hours — far longer than the duration of a train ride,” said Paula J. Bryan of Arlington.

Metro caught wind of the complaints. The agency said the air fresheners used in the pilot were certified as eco-friendly and safe for people to breathe, but even so, Metro is backing away from the program — for now.

“I mean, I understand some of the concerns there,” Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said. “But we have a lot of people coming in with all kinds of perfumes and everything else on the train every day, so I think maybe there’s a balance there somewhere.” MARTINE POWERS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The new anti-fare evasion mechanisms have been installed at Gallery Place and Fort Totten stations.

REGION It’s not all that common, but the hottest weather in the nation was lined up along the Interstate 95 corridor from the District to Boston on Tuesday afternoon.

The region’s temperatures were hotter than those in the desert Southwest as well as the southeastern U.S. Only parts of the southern Great Plains were as hot.

Temperatures in the Northeast soared into the mid-90s. Factor in the humidity and it felt more like 95 to 100.

It was the third straight day with temperatures of at least 90 degrees in this zone, which officially meets the criteria for a heat wave.

Toddler dies after being found in backyard pool

Substitute teacher charged with soliciting girl for sex

A 23-month-old boy died Tuesday after he was found in a small children’s pool in the backyard of a privately run day care center in Northeast Washington, according to District police and fire officials. D.C. police are investigating the death.

The name of the toddler was not immediately made public. (TWP)

A Fairfax County substitute teacher has been charged with soliciting a young girl for sex, police said. Hatim Khalid Abdelrahman, 22, of Reston, was arrested Monday night after allegedly arranging a meeting with the girl with the intent of having sex, Fairfax police said. local Magazine agrees to pay $1.65M over debunked story about gang rape CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. Rolling Stone magazine and a University of Virginia fraternity agreed to settle a lawsuit over a debunked story about a gang rape on campus for $1.65 million, the fraternity said Tuesday.

The Virginia Alpha Chapter of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, which had sought $25 million, said in a statement that its members are glad to be able to put the

“ordeal” behind them.

“We are pleased to be able to close the book on that trying ordeal and its aftermath,” it said.

Rolling Stone declined to comment.

The settlement closes the final chapter of a lengthy legal saga sparked by the 2014 story “A Rape on Campus” by Sabrina Rubin Erdely. The story told the harrowing account of a woman identified only as “Jackie,” who said she was gang-raped at a fraternity house.

Virginia’s Phi Kappa Psi fraternity agreed to settle a lawsuit over a debunked Rolling Stone story.

University of Virginia and in schools nationwide and prompted police to launch an investigation into the alleged assault. The article crumbled after other news outlets began asking questions and police found no evidence to back up the claims. The story was officially retracted in April 2015.

Rash of killings prompts swift response by police Six people were fatally shot in Baltimore in a single night, prompting police to deploy officers on mandatory 12-hour shifts to try to quell the bloodshed. Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis described Monday night’s rash of killings as “an unconscionable amount of violence in a short amount of time.” Davis said between 8:20 p.m. and 3:25 a.m. on Tuesday, officers responded to five separate incidents, including a quadruple shooting that killed two people and left two others injured. U-Va. student evacuated in a coma from N. Korea

Drones could save people in cardiac crisis

NORTH KOREA University of Virginia student Otto Warmbier was evacuated from North Korea in a coma after having been detained for 17 months, his parents told The Washington Post on Tuesday.

Warmbier, 22, was due to arrive home in Cincinnati on Tuesday evening, after a stop at a U.S. military facility near Sapporo, Japan.

The family said they were informed that North Korean officials had told American envoys that Warmbier became ill with botulism sometime after his March 2016 trial in North Korea, where he was serving a 15-year-sentence for “hostile acts against the state.”

The North Korean account, the family said, claimed Warmbier then fell into a coma after being given a sleeping pill. The family said they were told their son had remained in a coma since then.

There was no immediate confirmation from U.S. officials of North Korea’s description of his illness — including whether he had botulism, a potentially fatal disease that is caused by a toxin but is not usually associated with loss of consciousness.

“Our son is coming home,” Fred Warmbier told The Post on Tuesday morning. “At the moment, we’re just treating this

According to Trump administration officials, information about Warmbier’s condition was transmitted on June 6 by North Korea’s ambassador to the United Nations to Joseph Yun, the State Department’s special representative for North Korea, at a meeting in New York.

At the time of his arrest, Warmbier had been on a stopover tour in North Korea, en route to Hong Kong, where he was to do a January 2016 study abroad trip.

But on his final night in Pyongyang — New Year’s Eve — he apparently went to a staff-only floor of his hotel and attempted to take down a large propaganda sign lauding the regime.

He was charged with “hostile

acts against the state.” After an hour-long trial in March 2016, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor.

Warmbier was flown out of North Korea the same day former basketball star Dennis Rodman arrived for his fifth visit to Pyongyang.

Rodman’s trip raised speculation that he might be going as an envoy to secure the release of Warmbier and three other Americans being held. Officials involved in securing Warmbier’s release told The Post that it had nothing to do with Rodman’s trip, calling it a “bizarre coincidence” that might have been a deliberate ploy by North Korea to distract from Warmbier’s condition. It sounds futuristic: Drones carrying heart defibrillators swooping in to help bystanders revive people stricken by cardiac arrest. Researchers in Sweden tested the idea and found drones arrived at the scene of 18 cardiac arrests within about five minutes of launch.

That was almost 17 minutes faster on average than ambulances — a big deal for a condition where minutes mean life or death. Cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death worldwide, killing more than 6 million people each year. The study was done last October and was published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Association.

The jury in the Bill Cosby sexual assault case, weighing charges that could send him to prison for the rest of his life, drilled down Tuesday on what the TV star said happened inside his suburban Philadelphia home and how he characterized his relationship with the accuser.

Jurors reviewed more than a dozen passages from a deposition Cosby gave more than a decade ago, hearing excerpts on a wide range of topics, from Cosby’s first meeting with Andrea Constand to the night in 2004 she says he drugged and violated her.

A mother’s fever during pregnancy, especially in the second trimester, is associated with a higher risk that her child will be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, researchers reported Tuesday.

The study by researchers at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health adds support for the theory that infectious agents that trigger a pregnant woman’s immune response may disrupt a fetus’ brain development and lead to disorders such as autism.

Mady Hornig, director of research at the school’s Center for Infection and Immunity, said fever can be part of the body’s immune response to infection, and molecules produced by a mother’s immune system may cross into the baby’s brain.

The study, published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, looked at 95,754 Norwegian children born between 1999 and 2009, identifying 15,701 children whose mothers said they had fevers at some point in their pregnancies. Of those, 583 had children later diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

Women who had one or two fevers during their pregnancy were 1.3 times more likely to have a child eventually diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, the study found. Three fevers doubled the risk, but the number of cases was too small to be considered significant. LENNY BERNSTEIN

Sessions asks Congress to lift pot protections

POLITICS Attorney General Jeff Sessions heatedly denied on Tuesday having an undisclosed meeting with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S. or conversations with any Russian officials about the U.S. election that sent Donald Trump to the White House. He vowed to defend his honor “against scurrilous and false allegations.”

Testifying at a Senate hearing, Sessions, who was a close Trump adviser during the campaign, said it was a “detestable and appalling lie” to suggest that he participated in or was aware of any collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.

In his dramatic appearance before former colleagues, Sessions also contradicted a contention made by former FBI Director James Comey at a hearing before the same panel last week.

Comey told the intelligence committee that, after President Trump pressured him to back off an investigation into the former national security adviser, Comey “implored” Sessions to make sure he was never left alone with the president again — but that Sessions didn’t respond.

“He didn’t recall this, but I responded to his comment by agreeing that the FBI and Department of Justice needed to be careful to follow department policy regarding appropriate contacts with the White House,” Sessions said.

The former Alabama senator defended himself against accusations that he misrepresented himself during his confirmation hearing by saying he hadn’t met with Russian officials during the campaign. Sessions argued that

in the context of that hearing, his answer was fair and correct.

Sessions also lent his support to the special counsel, Robert Mueller, who is now in charge of the Justice Department’s Russia investigation.

As for his role in Comey’s firing, Sessions told senators that he and his second-in-command, Rod Rosenstein, had a “clear view ... that we had problems there, and it was my best judgment that a fresh start at the FBI was the appropriate thing to do. And when asked I said that to the president.”

Asked about Trump’s own contention that the president fired Comey with the Russia probe in mind, Sessions said: “I guess I’ll just have to let his words speak for themselves. I’m not sure what was in his mind specifically.”

Sessions refused to say if he had ever discussed the Russia investigation with Trump, arguing that he could not disclose their private communications.

Democratic senators pressed

Defending his recusal Sessions said he recused himself from the Justice Department’s Russia investigation only because of a regulation that required it because he was involved in the Trump campaign. He insisted that he never knew anything about the Russia probe. The attorney general, however, did not actually step aside from the Russia probe until March 2, the day after The Washington Post reported on his two previously undisclosed meetings with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Days later, Sessions also corrected his confirmation hearing testimony to include the two meetings. (AP)

There had been suggestions that Sessions might have had a third, unreported, encounter with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, at the Mayflower Hotel in April 2016, where candidate Trump was giving his first major foreign policy speech.

Sessions was adamant that he did not have a private meeting with Kislyak at that event. But he did allow for the possibility that he encountered him in a reception, though he said he had no specific recollection of that.

On another hot-button issue, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., asked Sessions whether Trump records his conversations in the White House, because Trump has suggested there might be tapes.

Sessions told Rubio that he doesn’t know whether the president records his conversations, but if he did, the recordings would “probably” be preserved.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is asking congressional leaders to undo federal medical marijuana protections, according to a May letter that became public Monday.

The protections, known as the Rohrabacher-Farr amendment, have been in place since 2014.

They prohibit the Justice Department from using federal funds to prevent certain states from implementing their own laws on medical marijuana.

In the letter, Sessions said that it is “unwise” for Congress to restrict the Department of Justice’s funds for prosecutions “in the midst of an historic drug epidemic and potentially longterm uptick in violent crime.”

Sessions’ citing of a “historic drug epidemic” to justify a crackdown on medical marijuana is at odds with what researchers know about current drug use and abuse in the United States.

The epidemic Sessions refers to involves deadly opiate drugs, not marijuana.

A growing body of research acknowledged by the National Institute on Drug Abuse has shown that opiate deaths and overdoses decrease in states with medical marijuana laws.

Amid scandals, Uber says CEO will take leave Uber pared back the power of chief executive Travis Kalanick on Tuesday as the controversial leader stepped down for an indefinite leave of absence after months of growing scandal — much of it over allegations of sexual harassment — that had brought the company to crisis.

Kalanick’s return date is not specified, and his responsibilities will undergo “review” to possibly shift duties to other executives. He also faces the likelihood of reduced clout on the board, which is adding new “independent” members and creating an oversight committee to monitor efforts to improve corporate ethics and diversity.

Kalanick also cited the death of his mother and an injury to his father in a boating accident last month as a reason for the leave.

Also on Tuesday, a member of Uber’s board, billionaire businessman David Bonderman, apologized for making what he called an “inappropriate” comment about women at a company-wide meeting that was aimed at addressing the harassment of women and other unprofessional conduct within the company.

We tried four D.C. group activities to find out.

What’s the one thing scarier than trying to make friends as a kid? Trying to make friends as an adult. In lieu of striking up conversations with strangers on the street, there are plenty of groups and group activities in D.C. that promise you’ll be swapping friendship bracelets in no time. So I, a friendly and social human living among the citizens of this fair city, sampled a select few of them to test their friend-making potential — and also to judge the hell out of them. Group running There are kickball and bocce leagues aplenty in D.C., but for those of us who’d rather forget the gym classstoked anxiety of team sports, there are several running groups. One of these is the DC Capital Striders, which I found on meetup.com. I chose a Thursday evening run with the Striders’ Smithsonian Metro Group, which has its own Facebook page where leaders occasionally poll members on which course they want to do that day. The group’s events are open to runners of all levels — even not particularly fast ones like me — and some of the routes take participants to cool sites like the National Mall and Georgetown’s waterfront.

The event listing on meetup.com said the run I chose would be 4 to 5.5 miles. (Beginners had the option of running a 3-mile route.)

When I showed up ready to run at the Smithsonian Metro station, the group was 17 people strong. Before we set off, each runner announced his or her name and pace, so we

could find our similarly speedy (or not) friends.

These runs are great for people who can jog and chat at the same time. Michiel, the leader of this particular 6:30 p.m. run, jogged at the back of the pack to rein in stragglers. My pace was slower than most, so I ended up running with Michiel before I sensed he was itching to pick up the pace. “Don’t worry about me, I’ll catch up,” I insisted, and Michiel left me to run about half the course alone. When we all crossed the metaphorical finish line, most people dispersed right to the Metro, leaving little time for more mingling.

My cost: $0.

The verdict: The Striders will benefit your social life if you’re a confident runner who can keep up with the pace of the pack.

This fitness group began in Boston in November 2011, when two former Northeastern University rowers got together for a month of early-morning workouts, tracking their progress in a Google doc titled “November Project.” After recruiting their friends, who recruited their friends, who recruited their friends, the November Project workouts snowballed into a phenomenon with dozens of chapters in cities throughout the U.S. and beyond.

These days, the November Project is known for its energy and sense of community — which would explain why, at 6:20 a.m. on a Wednesday, I met 65 or so others at the Lincoln Memorial to work out.

The November Project rotates sites: Mondays at either Meridian Hill Park or Capitol Hill, Wednesdays at the Lincoln Memorial and Fridays at a new location each time.

The chapter leaders, who spearhead the workouts, make the drills very interactive. For our workout that day, we ran up and down the Lincoln Memorial steps before grabbing a partner — the leaders asked us to make sure it was somebody we didn’t know — and

doing exercises together like burpees and planks.

I was entirely expecting to hate this experience: We all know there’s nothing worse than having happy people in your vicinity at 6 a.m.

But I found a true tribal feeling to the November Project. All of the

regulars knew each other’s name, and if you were new they made a point to ask. There was also a lot of hugging (but sweaty hugging, which could be a downside).

My cost: $11.51 for an Uber to the Lincoln Memorial.

The verdict: If you can hold

yourself accountable to getting up early, you are bound to make friends through the November Project.

Paint Nite thing begrudgingly.

I did find that saying the initial hello made it easier to converse later, and by that I mean joke about how bad our art was turning out.

When we weren’t chatting, we spent a lot of time silently focusing on our masterpieces — unlike at the typical happy hour, it was nice to be in a group and not be expected to make conversation. Plus, now I have this painting that I paid to make myself. Do people actually hang these on their walls?

My cost: $50, for the class ($45) and a beer ($5).

The verdict: They say a person makes his or her own fun, and this is one of those situations. You can definitely meet people at Paint Nite, but it’s all about how social you want to be.

PAINT NITE

Participants in Paint Nite — a popular business that holds events around the country — get to sip adult drinks while painting a designated portrait as an instructor guides them through the process step by step. For my test run, I went to Ivy City bar Big Chief to paint a landscape of the Washington Monument surrounded by cherry blossoms. The sample image online looked pretty enough that I figured I’d wind up keeping my version instead of letting it sit in my mudroom before tossing it six months later.

As soon as I walked through the door, I picked an easel and didn’t hesitate to introduce myself to the four others at my table. Good — the hard part was out of the way. Two of these people were co-workers — teachers at a high school — and two were a married couple, the man of whom I could tell showed up to this

I wandered into trivia night at Penn Social and discovered that this is a place where trivia is no joke: The crowd — 50 or so participants on about a dozen teams — took up the entire top floor of the bar. I surveyed the room in search of a team that didn’t seem like they’d be mean to a stranger — or worse, the kind of people who fight with the scorekeeper.

I approached a team of three who had an empty chair at their table. I didn’t want to seem intrusive — I mean, #NoNewFriends is a real hashtag on Instagram. But it turns out a simple “Hey, I’m Bryanna. Is it cool if I join your team? I promise I’m not weird” was suitable enough for these people. I had overcome the hardest obstacle in this undertaking and I was a worry-free woman. Now get me a beer.

Trivia nights, like this one held weekly at Penn Social, are a good way to find out what other people care about pretty quickly. That’s a huge plus when you want to get to know strangers. My prowess in pop culture and nothing else was only so helpful, as literally every other person in America these days feasts on TV and movies and whatever else Jon Hamm is doing.

The verdict: Not a bad way to meet like-minded people, but if you’re worried about approaching a group blindly, see if somebody is organizing a team on meetup.com.

Doug Williams worked his way up as a coach and a scout after a storied playing career.

Not just a celebrity: Williams will not kowtow as Sr. VP Doug Williams is not a puppet.

Forget the Redskins’ flow chart for a minute. Sure, Williams, whose promotion from senior executive to senior vice president of player personnel was announced Tuesday, is below team president Bruce Allen. And Williams didn’t get a general manager title. But that’s all irrelevant, because Williams won’t be controlled. He’ll be heard.

The key here is that Williams, 61, is a football lifer.

He’s a Redskins legend, a Super Bowl MVP. He was a high school and college coach before working in pro personnel for 13 years. He deserves his new role after a well-rounded career.

And if fans think the

Redskins are pulling another publicity stunt, Williams will prove them wrong just like he did in 1987, when he led Washington to the Super Bowl XXII title after unseating starter Jay Schroeder. The Redskins paid Williams an unthinkable $1 million per year as a backup, which required a rare request for approval from owner Jack Kent Cooke. It was a bargain.

“A lot of people look at it from a celebrity standpoint,” Williams said of his promotion, “but I can tell you there are very few football players to win a Super Bowl that will spend time coaching high school, nine years in college coaching and be up and down road scouting and being in personnel departments for years. I may be a celebrity, but I enjoy doing what I’m doing.”

‘This was Doug’s plan’ As senior vice president of player personnel, Doug Williams assumes a leadership role in Washington’s front office following the team’s nasty divorce with general manager Scot McCloughan. Team president Bruce Allen said he interviewed “over a dozen” candidates for the GM opening, but Williams’ plan — which entailed a move up to director of the front office, the expansion of roles for some co-workers and promotions for others — made a GM title unnecessary. “This was Doug’s plan,” Allen said. “People interviewed with different titles and all of that, but this was Doug’s plan of wanting to develop and lead the personnel department.”

Williams has wanted to run the Redskins since he was a player looking up to Bobby Mitchell, the team’s first African-American player who was a Redskins executive from 1969 to 2002. Williams used to visit Mitchell, then the assistant GM, in his office every day.

“You’re talking 1986,” Williams said. “For a black man to be assistant general manager was great.”

In his new leadership role, Williams will be protected in a way that ousted GM Scot McCloughan wasn’t: He’s one of the most beloved Redskins of the Super Bowl era, more so than fellow championship quarterbacks Joe Theismann and Mark Rypien. Allen, who has final say on roster moves, won’t be able to undermine Williams like he did past executives.

The fans won’t stand for it.

McCloughan was a fan favorite, but he was also a mercenary.

The public loves Williams because he’s always been approachable. The day after winning the Super Bowl, a pizza delivery boy saw Williams at Redskins Park, ripped off the top of a pizza box and begged Williams to sign it. Williams was exhausted from six hours of oral surgery that kept him from sleeping, but he didn’t hesitate to sign.

That now AARP-aged fan surely still has that autograph, and legions of Redskins fans have their own fond memories of Williams. In his new job, Williams will soon add to them.

Top pick was kicked off college team Washington made polarizing college lefthander Seth Romero the 25th overall pick in the 2017 MLB draft Monday, hoping to find value in a player formerly projected as a top-10 pick. Romero, 21, was kicked off the Houston baseball team in May after being suspended twice in three years.

The Houston Chronicle reported that Romero was first suspended for “a lack of effort” in conditioning as a sophomore but lost 40 pounds in the offseason.

He also was reportedly suspended for failing a drug test for marijuana and photographed posing with a bong in uniform. The last straw at UH for Romero, who posted 15.87 strikeouts per nine innings with a mid-90s fastball and a wipeout slider, was fighting g g a teammate. (TWP)

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver doesn’t want to break up the Warriors. He just wants the rest of the league to catch up to them.

Golden State stormed to an NBA championship Monday, closing the postseason with a 16-1 record after defeating the Cavaliers in five games. Last year, the Warriors won a record 73 games in the regular season.

They have a nucleus of players in their prime outwardly committed to staying together.

Such dominance cuts against the league’s hope of competitive

balance, which it has tried — and largely failed — to achieve through collectively bargained measures since 2011.

Silver, though, took no issue with the construction or quality of the Warriors. He expects other franchises to keep up.

In a conversation with The Post, Silver pointed out that the Warriors had succeeded through savvy drafting and player development before signing Kevin Durant, who became NBA Finals MVP. They chose Draymond Green with the 35th pick, Klay Thompson at No. 11 and Steph

Her struggle is real Katy Perry tries to send a message on ‘Witness.’

ALBUM REVIEW Sometimes, a pop star drops a single so soupy and ill-conceived, it makes you wonder if the artist ever had any understanding of their own appeal to begin with.

For Katy Perry, that song is “Chained to the Rhythm,” a halfthrottle disco ditty that scolds us for dancing our nights away while the republic crumbles.

Perry calls this new approach “purposeful pop,” implying that her previous music didn’t have a purpose. Obviously, it did.

Her biggest singles provided affirmation (“Roar”), promoted uplift (“Firework”), encouraged abandon (“Teenage Dream”)

and embraced goofiness (“C a lifor nia Gurls”). Purposeful or not, her music has been therapeutic.

On her new album, “Witness,” Perry is abandoning all of that — her frivolity, her wink-wink sense of humor, that brassiere that shot Reddi-wip. “So comfortable, we cannot see the troubletrouble,” she sings on “Chained to the Rhythm.” But throughout “Witness,” Perry refuses to articulate what that “troubletrouble” might actually be. We get the sense that bad forces are on the rise in America, and that we should feel proud of ourselves for noticing them, and … that’s it, congratulations, we’re woke!

ears during “Roulette,” when Perry longs to “have a few rounds and just let go.” If you want to believe in her political awakening during “Bigger Than Me” (“If I’m not evolving, I’m just another robot taking up oxygen”), you’ll have to ignore her stay-the-course platitudes on “Pendulum” (“Don’t try and reinvent your wheel. . . .

You’re too original”). And during the feminist cheers of “Hey Hey Hey,” when Perry boasts about “karate chopping all cliches and norms, all in a dress,” please excuse the cliche she’s just evoked.

At best, Perry sounds like she’s trapped in a purgatory, pantomiming progress, giving an endless pep talk to her own reflection. She wants to look out into the world, but she can’t look away from the mirror.

entertainment ‘Hunger,’ a memoir of her weight struggles, revisits painful times BOOKS Roxane Gay begins her new book — the hardest she’s ever had to write — by saying what it isn’t.

“The story of my body is not a story of triumph,” Gay writes.

“Mine is not a success story.”

Instead, “Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body” is a searing account of the essayist’s lifelong struggle with her weight, which

once topped 500 pounds. It’s no weight loss memoir, she explains.

“I wished I could write that book,” says Gay, 42, a onceobscure academic and fiction writer whose tart takes on social issues and pop culture built a loyal online audience and helped launch a best-selling 2014 collection of essays, “Bad Feminist.”

Her new book is a portrait of resilience in the aftermath of trauma: When Gay was 12, a boy she adored lured her to a cabin near her Nebraska home, and he and a group of his friends raped

her. For years, she told no one. Food became a source of comfort.

Newshub was tipped off to the account, which numbered Lorde among its 24 followers, by a 17-year-old fan. Newshub reported that the locations noted in the captions of the four onion ring photos — Sydney, Hatfield (a city near London), New York and onboard a flight from Tennessee to New York — match the singer’s recent travels.
